A galvanic cell, using as electrolyte a fused salt solution of calcium carbide and as electrodes carbon and a Fe-C alloy of known composition, has been set up to study the thermodynamics of Fe-C alloys in the temperature rmzge 800" to 1000°C. Time independence and reproducibility of the cell electromotive force were taken as evidence of the reversible behavior of the cell. Carbon was believed to be present in the electrolyte as the so-called acetylide ion, C;-. The plots of the cell electromotive force us temperature for a specific alloy composition were straight lines within the limits of experimental error. The average Partial molar enthalpy of carbon in iron relative to pure carbon was found to be +10,610 i 93 cal per g-atom C. Thermodynamic analysis of the data has led to the following equation for the carbon activity, ac, based upon pure carbon as the standard state: In ac = In Zc + 10,560/RT + (10.02 + 77O/T)ZC - 2.350 where ZC is the lattice ratio [nC/(nF, - nc )] and T is the absolute temperature. This equalion gives carbon activity values generally slightly lower than those from gas equilibration studies reported in the literature. METAL LOGRAPHIC examination of a polished cross section of the steel anode used in the electrolysis studies of fused salt solutions of calcium carbide by Morris and Harry revealed extensive carburization of the steel by the electrodeposited carbon. This carburization was reflected in the variability, with time, of the applied potential to the electrolysis cell, necessary to maintain a constant current density at the electrodes. This observation suggested the setting up of a galvanic cell of the "alloy concentration" type to study the thermodynamics of some metal-carbon alloys. Cells of this general type have been widely used for the study of alloy systems.2 In view of the availability of published data in respect of the austenite phase of the Fe-C system, it was decided to carry out measurements upon these alloys before proceeding to studies of less well documented systems. The galvanic cell may be written: where [C] is carbon dissolved in iron. The electrolyte was a fused salt solution of calcium carbide, containing some 5 to 10 mol pct of carbide. The cell reaction is believed to be: C(s)-[CI [I1 Carbon forms an interstitial solid solution in iron, with the atoms located in the octahedral interstices. In the fcc crystal structure of austenite there is one octahedral interstice per iron atom. Thus, the lattice ratio, ZC, shown by Gurney3 to be the fundamental concentration parameter in the context of interstitial solutions, is given by: where nc and nFe are the number of carbon and iron atoms, respectively. chipman4 has recently shown empirically the advantages of using this concentration parameter instead of the more usual atom ratio or atom fraction. The cell electromotive force, E, assuming reversible behavior, is related to the carbon potential or the partial molar free energy of carbon in the solid solution relative to pure carbon at the same temperature and pressure, GP at the composition ZC, by the equation: where z is the carbide ion valency and F is the Faraday constant. An activity of carbon, ac, in the solution relative to the value of unity assigned to pure carbon, and an activity coefficient, qC , are defined such that: where R is the gas constant and T the absolute temperature. GF is further related to the relative partial molar enthalpy Hm, and the temperature coefficient of the cell electromotive force, (aE/aT)Zc, by the equations: Measurement of the cell electromotive force thus enables calculation of the relative partial molar thermodynamic properties of carbon in iron, if z is known. At E = 0, the solid solution is in equilibrium with pure carbon. More convenient for many purposes is the standard state based upon the infinitely dilute solution, Henry's law. The relationship between the activity coefficient of carbon based upon this standard state, and that based upon the pure carbon standard state, qC , may be obtained by considering the free energy of transfer of carbon from the latter standard state to the former. The formation density logging tool provides a radioactivity measurement that yields formation densities in situ. The relationship between bulk density and porosity is well understood. With knowledge of grain and fluid densities, porosity may be computed from the indicated formation bulk densities in shale-free formations. The porosities thus determined may be used with a resistivity log for water-saturation determinations. One technique utilizes a density vs resistivity plut. A plot of density vs Sonic-log transit time is used for porosity determinations in shaly sands. This method is particularly suited to wells drilled with oil-base or salt muds. In shale-free formations, comparisons of density values nnd neutron-log readings are used to identify lithologr and, thus, to select appropriate values of grain density for porosity computations. Through the use of Formation Density, Sonic and neutron logs, the interpretation problems caused by complex matrix lithologies are simplified. Other applications of the Formation Density log are found in the identification of minerals in evaporite deposits and in yield determinations of "oil shales". INTRODUCTION Widespread field application has demonstrated that the measurement of formation density is a useful and revealing technique for well logging. Responding to the bulk density variations of the formation, the Formation Density log affords valuable data on the porosity, lithology and fluid content of the formations. Although not without its own limitations, the Formation Density tool may provide effective interpretation under conditions that hamper or preclude the use of other porosity devices. When used in conjunction with other devices, such as the Sonic or neutron, complex matrix conditions may be better understood, defined and evaluated. A previous paper' described the valuable contribution of the Formation Density tool in the logging of empty, or gas-filled, holes. The purpose of the present paper is to describe applications of the device in liquid-filled holes. THE FORMATION DENSITY TOOL The Formation Density tool was devised to measure the bulk densities of formations in situ. Actually, the device responds to electron density, but in the overwhelming majority of cases of interest, the electron density is very closely proportional to the bulk density. In other cases appropriate corrections can be made if necessary. Comparisons of log-derived densities with true densities for the more common matrix minerals are shown in Table 1. The tool consists of a gamma-ray source and detector mounted in a skid which, during the logging operation, is in contact with the borehole wall (see Ref. 1 for schematic). Gamma rays are emitted by the source and diffused through the formation. The number of diffused gamma rays reaching the detector at a fixed spacing from the source are counted. An increase in counting rate by the detector indicates a decrease in bulk density in front of the skid. Conversely, a decreased counting rate signifies an increase in bulk density. A measurement of hole diameter, between the face of the skid and that of the eccentering arm, is recorded simultaneously with the measurement of diffused gamma rays. Since the tool is a wall-contact device, the size of the borehole has little influence, provided good contact is maintained with the wall of the hole. Only in extremely large or small boreholes does the actual diameter become significant. However, for most accurate measurements the borehole size should be taken into account. Fig. 1 presents the departure curves for the conversion of counting rate to bulk density for liquid-filled holes of various sizes. It is of utmost importance that the skid maintain good contact with the wall of the hole. If, due to roughness or caving, there is mud between the skid and the formation, the tool will include in its response the relatively low-density mud, and the apparent density reading will be too low. Normally, permeable beds do not cave appreciably, so that reliable readings are usually available for zones of interest. Nevertheless, the caliper reading over the zone of interest should be examined for any wall roughness. When mud cake exists between the skid and the formation, the Formation Density log sees it as part of the formation. When thick mud cakes exist, a correction is required. An extension of the thermodynamic theory has been made for the case of irreversible growth processes occurring by the motion of an interface. The theory is applicable to such diverse phenomena as diffusion, growth in recrystallization, continuous grain growth, growth of carbides, etc., growth of eutectoid products, growth in solidification, recovery, "slipless" flow, etc. THE publication of a recent book1 has served to focus attention on a very powerful means of treating certain irreversible processes. This method which has been formally described as the thermodynamic theory of irreversible processes is applicable to processes which involve an approach to equilibrium and for which the deviations from equilibrium are small. The irreversible processes can be classified into three groups: chemical reactions, transport processes (diffusion, heat and electrical flows), and relaxation phenomena involving a degradation of internal energy to more stable states. The limits of applicability of the theory can be precisely defined1,2 for each type of irreversible process. For example, in a chemical reaction at constant temperature and pressure, the Gibbs free energy released per mol in the process should be less than the thermal energy, RT. Another type of irreversible process, which sometimes involves a combination of the first two of the above-mentioned groups, is treated in this paper. This process is one characterized by the motion of an interface separating two regions having different values of free energy and may be briefly described as a growth process. Prigogine2 and Herring3 have treated special cases of this type of process. Previous conscious applications of the theory in metallurgy have been limited to the field of diffusion, one of the transport processes. Darken,4 Bardeen,5 Prigogine2 and others have made significant contributions in this respect. Some other applications of the theory are described in this paper. The Theory The thermodynamic theory of irreversible processes is based on the work of Onsager,6 DeDonder,7 Prigogine2 and others. A resume of the theory has been given by Prigogine2 and DeGroot.1 A brief description of the theory follows, although for a complete understanding the reader is urged to read the references. It is first assumed that the change in entropy, even for a system removed from equilibrium, is given by dS = [dU + pdV - Si µi, dn, - Sk Pk dxk]T-1 Using this expression, the irreversible entropy production in the system is calculated by subtracting the contribution to the change in entropy of the system by transfer of heat, work, or matter from the surroundings. Thus, for example, the irreversible entropy production of a system at constant temperature and pressure is given by dtS = — — dG (DeDonder7) Now it has been shown by Prigogine,2 DeDonder,7 and DeGroot1 that the rate of irreversible entropy production diS/dt, when calculated in the manner suggested, can be written as a sum of products of conjugate forces XK and fluxes Jk, i.e., d,s/ = Sk Jk Xk [I-1] dt The assumption is next made that a linear relation exists between a given flux and the forces, obtained from Eq. I-1, i.e., Ji = Sk Lik Xk (i = 1, 2, . . . n) [I-2] Generally, there is a degree of freedom in choice of the fluxes and forces. However, for all the choices consistent with Eq. I-1 the Onsager8 relations, based on the principle of microscopic reversibility, namely, Lik = Lki, are valid. The coefficients Lik, depending upon the choice of the conjugate fluxes and forces, may be more or less dependent upon the parameters defining the state of the system. In general, the proper choice of fluxes and forces utilizing Eq. I-1, makes the coefficients Lik independent of time. Also, because many of the three classes of irreversible phenomena have already been treated,1,2 a proper choice can be made by analogy. In any case, the validity of Eq. 1-2, from whatever choice made using Eq. I-1, must be tested by experimentation. THIS BRIEF PAPER presents the information available on the use of Dorrclon?is in the middling re-grind unit at the lead-zinc mill of Canadian Exploration Limited. The plant throughput is 1,650 tons per twenty-four hours. The flotation feed is ground to 60 per ?Cent passing through 200 mesh. It contains some composite 11articles of sphalerite in calcite, and these reported either in the final zinc concentrate, thus lowering the grade, or in the tailing, with loss of zinc. The re-grind unit was set up in the zinc flotation circuit to liberate the sphalerite from these middling particles, to raise the grade of concentrate and improve recovery. Grinding through 325 mesh should give substantial liberation of locked sphalerite. The middling regrind unit consists of two Dorrdones and one ballmill arranged as shown in the -accompanying flow-sheet. The Hardinge ball-mill, size 7 ft. x 36 in., was free for this use as a result of recent plant expansion. The two Dorrclones were purchased, and the necessary pumps and pipe lines were installed to complete the regrind unit. The unit has been developed over a period of two years by several steps and various flow schemes until reaching tl1e present flow scheme. These steps are not elaborated here, because the changes were made to determine the best product to work on for flotation metallurgy, and not because of the Domrolone classifying ability.

The Granby ores may be divided into three groups or classes. The No. I ore is a heavy pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, sulphide carrying some free silica, and calcite. No. 2 ore carries the same general group of sulphides as does No. 1, but in a lesser amount. The gangue is an altered greenstone. No. 3 ore has a smaller amount of sulphides than either of the others. Analyses of these ores is as follows: Cu. Si02 Fe. CaO S. Al 203 MgO No. I. Drill cores show a certain dissemination of sulphides in portions of the rock, so that grinding to 5 per cent. + 65 mesh with 65 per cent.-200 mesh liberates the sulphide minerals very completely. The association of the sulphides is fundamental. The pyrite was probably deposited first and was followed by a portion of the chalcopyrite, or these two portions of the sulphide minerals were deposited together.

The Sao Chico gold project is located on the Tocantinzinho trend which is the most mineralised zone in the Tapajos Mineral Field of Brazil (see Figure 1). The Tapajos goldfi eld was the site of the biggest gold rush in Brazilian history in the late 1970s and 1980s when approximately 500 000 garimpeiros (artisanal miners) rushed to the area to exploit extensive areas of newly discovered alluvial gold. Approximately 20 - 30 million ounces of gold were produced from these operations before the easily won alluvial gold deposits were largely depleted. The Tapajos region has had little exploration by modern exploration methods compared to any other equivalent gold fields in the world. The gold occurs in sulfide veins developed in shear zones within Proterozoic granites. Gold grades vary from approximately 15 g/t in the hard rock veins, to up to several ounces per tonne in the supergene weathered upper portions of the veins. Goldbearing vein zones in the weathered profile are free digging. In addition, tailings dumps from previous mining operations contain gold grades of approximately 1 g/t. Metallurgical test work conducted to date indicates that gold recoveries of at least 70 per cent can be achieved via gravity concentration. Gold Anomaly, via its 100 per cent owned Brazilian subsidiary, Gold Aura Do Brasil Mineracao Ltda (GOAB), plans to mine the tailings and weathered vein material by open cut methods to generate a quick cash fl ow and to provide a better understanding of the mineralisation as part of a feasibility study for mining the underlying sulfide zone mineralisation (see Figure 2). Mining will utilise locally hired excavators and trucks and ramp up to a rate of 100 tonnes per day. To treat the gold-bearing material, GOAB has purchased an integrated 'state of the art' gravity concentration processing plant from Gekko Systems of Australia. The processing plant includes a scrubber for clay and oversize removal, coarse gold gravity separation via an inline pressure jig and an inline spinner; and fine gold gravity separation via a Falcon Concentrator. The plant is expected to be operational by late 2010. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. No paper was prepared for this presentation.

INTRODUCTION The delayed fission neutron, or DFN technique for uranium ore body analysis uses the first down-hole method for detecting uranium in place quantitatively. This technique detects the presence of and measures the amount of uranium in the formation. DFN TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION The DFN technique depends upon inducing a fission reaction in the formation uranium with neutrons, resulting in an anomalous and quantitative return of neutrons from the uranium. Since there are no free, natural neutrons in formation, a good, low noise assessment may be made. There are several methods available for determining uranium quantity in situ. The method used by Century uses an electrical source of neutrons. This is a linear accelerator which bombards a tritium target with high velocity deuterium ions. The resulting reaction emits high energy neutrons which diffuse into the surrounding formation. They lose most of their energy until they come to thermal equilibrium with the formation. Upon encountering a fissile material, such as uranium, these thermal neutrons will react with the material. These reactions produce additional neutrons, the number of which is a function of the number of original neutrons and the amount of fissile material exposed. The particular source used, the linear accelerator, has several distinct advantages over other types of sources: 1. It can be turned off. Thus, it does not constitute a radioactive hazard when it is not in use. 2. It can be gated on in short bursts (6 to 8 microseconds). This results in measurements free of a high background of primary neutrons. 3. The output can be controlled. Thus, the neutron output can be made the same in a number of tools, easily and automatically. There are several interesting reactions which take place during the lifetime of the neutrons around the source. During the slowing down or moderating process the neutron can react with several elements. One of these is oxygen 17. This results in a background level of neutrons in any of the measurements which must be accounted for in any interpretation technique. These elements are usually uninteresting economically. The high energy neutrons will also react with uranium 238. However, the proportions of uranium 235 and 238 are nearly constant. Therefore, this reaction aids detection of uranium mineral and need not be seperated out. Upon reaching thermal energy the neutrons will react with any fissile material, uranium 235, uranium 234, and thorium 232. At present, we do not have good techniques for seperating out the reaction products of uranium 234 and thorium 232. However, uranium 234 is a small (.0055%) percentage of the uranium mineral and thorium 232 is usually not present in sedimentary deposits. When the uranium 235 reacts with thermal neutrons it breaks into two or more fragments and some neutrons. This occurs within a few microseconds after the primary neutrons have moderated and is the prompt reaction. One system uses this; the PFN or prompt fission neutron technique. We don't use this method because the neutron population is low and, therefore, the signal is small and difficult to work with, accurately. Within a few microseconds to several seconds the fission fragments also decay with the emmission of additional neutrons. Now, with a long time period available and a large neutron population we gate off the generator and measure the delayed fission neutrons after a waiting period. These neutrons can be a measure of the amount of uranium present around the probe. Thermal neutrons are detected with the DFN technique instead of capture gamma rays to avoid some of the returns from other elements than uranium. LOGGING TECHNIQUE The exact logging technique will depend, to some extent, upon the purpose of the measurement. However, the general technique is to first run the standard logs. These will include: 1. The gamma ray log for initial evaluation of the mineral body and for determining the position of the borehole within the mineral body, 2. The resistance or resistivity log for determining the formation quality, lithology, and porosity. 3. The S. P. curve for estimating the redox state and shale content, and measuring formation water salinity, 4. The hole deviation for locating the position, depth, and thickness of the mineral (and other formations), and 5. The neutron porosity curve. The neutron porosity curve is most important to the interpretation of the DFN readings. The neutrons from this tool are affected in the same way by bore hole and formation fluids as the DFN neutrons are. Therefore, we can use this curve to determine effect of the oxygen 17 in the water. Of course, this curve can be used to determine formation porosity. It can also be used to calculate formation density.

The phase relationships of the MnTe-MnS system were studied by DTA procedures. There is an eutectic at 810°C with about 10 mole pct MnS-90 mole pct MnTe. An eutectoid occurs at about 710°C with approximately 7 mole pct MnS where the MnTe(NaCl) solid solution dissociates on cooling to MnTe(NiAs) and MnS. There is very little solid solubility of MnTe in MnS. ALTHOUGH MnS may exist in three different crystal forms,' only the NaC1-type phase is stable.2 Above 1040°C, MnTe also has the cubic NaC1-type structure. Below that temperature, MnTe changes to the NiAs-type structure.3 This phase transition is rapid for both heating and cooling. As a result the high-temperature crystal form of MnTe cannot be retained at room temperature. Because MnO, MnS, and MnSe are all stable with the NaC1-type structure, and MnTe has this structure at high temperatures,4 solid solution formation could be expected among these compounds. It is interesting to note, however, that a complete series of solid solutions exist only in the MnS-MnSe system,' and that the solid solution is quite limited in the MnO-MnS system.' The MnSe-MnTe system possesses a complete series of solid solutions at high temperatures with separation at lower temperatures.7 Although ion size may be critical in the miscibility of MnO-MnS, it is quite possible that the bond type plays a more important role with the miscibility of MnSe-MnTe. This would permit us to speculate that the miscibility gap would be extensive in the MnTe-MnS system. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation. The samples were prepared by mixing and compacting MnTe and MnS powders. The MnS was previously prepared through the sulfur reduction of Mnso4.8 The MnTe had been prepared by mixing and compacting double vacuum distilled metallic manganese and high-purity tellurium in stoichiometric ratio modified with 1 wt pct excess tellurium. The compacted powders were put in a graphite crucible which was sealed in an evacuated vycor tube. The free space in the vycor tube was made minimal to reduce the loss of tellurium. The sealed assembly was then heated slowly to about 500° C where the free manganese and tellurium reacted vigorously, melting the MnTe which formed. Only one phase, MnTe, was detected by X-ray powder patterns and metallographic techniques. Each compact of MnTe-MnS was placed in a graphite crucible and then sealed in an evacuated vycor tube. The samples were heated at 1250°C for 4 hr and furnace-cooled. Microscopic examination revealed no third phase beyond MnS and MnTe. A typical microstructure is presented in Fig. 1. Identification. X-ray powder patterns were obtained using 114.6 mm Debye-Scherrer camera and Fe-Ka radiation. Mixtures of cubic MnS and hexagonal MnTe were observed in all of the compositions prepared. No lattice parameter change was noticed among different compositions, indicating no solid solution could be retained at room temperatures between these two end-members. A lattice parameter of 5.244Å for MnS was obtained by the Nelson and Riley9 extrapolation method using the diffraction lines of (h2 + k2 + 12) equal 12, 16, 20, and 24. The values, a = 4.145Å and c = 6.708Å, for hexagonal MnTe were obtained from the (006) and (220) lines in the back-reflection region. These values agree well with the values reported by Taylor and Kag1e.10 Differential Thermal Analysis. A differential thermal analysis procedure was used to determine phase relationships since the high-temperature equilibrium conditions could not be retained for examination at room temperature, even when the sealed samples (~0.5 g) were quenched in water. The samples were sealed in an evacuated 4 mm vycor tube with a recess in the bottom to accept a thermocouple. An Al2O3 reference was similarly prepared and the two placed within a piece of insulating fire brick to dampen spurious temperature changes within the furnace. The furnace was controlled by a mechanically driven rheostat which increased the temperature at a rate of about 15°C per min. Known phase changes in the Pb-Sn system1' and the a-to-ß quartz inversion12 were used for calibration

Large striation-free single crystals of bismuth have been grown from the melt by rapid freezing. Zone-refined bismuth, together with doping impurities if desired, is placed in a shallow flat-bottomed graphite boat and melted in air with a propane hand torch. The torch is then withdrawn in a manner which causes the melt to freeze direction-ally. Crystallization, which resuires only a few minutes, usually results in the formation of a single crystal even when a seed crystal is not used. Crys -tals of any desired orientation may be grown by using oriented seeds. Undoped crystals grown by this method have residual resistivity ratios greater than 200. THE growth of large single crystals of bismuth by either the Czochralski or horizontal zoning technique is not entirely satisfactory. Specifically, difficulties are encountered in producing single crystals of the required dimensions in all desired orientations, and striations caused by low-angle polysynthetic twins are frequently present in the crystals. In addition, both methods are time-consuming and require special apparatus of some complexity. A simpler method has now been developed for growing large striation-free bismuth single crystals of desired orientation in a short time. Fig. 1 shows a typical setup consisting of a rectangular graphite boat which contains zone-refined bismuth, a 1/8-in.-thick flat quartz plate which covers the entire inner bottom of the boat, and three additional quartz plates about 1/4 in. thick which are used to separate the bismuth from the graphite everywhere except at a small area at the left of the boat. The graphite boat is 1 in. high, and its sides and bottom are about 1/8 in. thick. The quartz plates should be smooth and clean. The graphite boat is heated from the right with a propane torch, as shown in Fig. 1, until the bismuth is completely melted. The melt has the shape of a triangle with a narrow neck at the apex farthest from the torch. The melt is frozen direc-tionally by gradually moving the torch toward the right, away from the boat. The bismuth in contact with the graphite, at the left end of the neck, freezes first. The freezing interface then moves down the neck into the main bulk of material, where it develops a convex shape ideal for the continuation of single-crystal growth. The interface continues to move through the melt until the entire bulk is solid. The entire procedure may be completed, in air, in a matter of minutes. The technique described almost always yields a single crystal whose basal plane is nearly perpendi,cular to the bottom of the graphite boat. In earlier experiments, in which the bottom of the melt was in direct contact with the graphite boat, single crystals were grown with basal planes parallel, perpendicular, or at some intermediate angle to the bottom of the boat. At times the orientation of the bulk of the material differed from the orientation of the material in the narrow neck. In these cases, a nucleation site initiated the growth of a differently oriented crystal, and the thermal conditions favored the new orientation over the initial one. The thermal conditions depend on a number of factors, including the heating technique, the placement, shape, and thickness of the quartz plates, the thickness of the walls and bottom of the graphite boat, and the quantity of bulk bismuth employed. All of these factors, plus the initial orientation and the presence and effectiveness of nucleation sites, will determine the orientation of the final large single-crystal slab. When a crystal of specific orientation is desired, an oriented section of a rapid-freeze crystal is shaped by spark cutting and grinding for use as a seed. To grow a doped crystal, the desired impurity is placed in the graphite boat together with the bismuth chunks and seed. Crystals doped with mercury, cadmium, lead, and selenium have been grown. The rate of freezing is so great that the distribution coefficient of any impurity approximates unity. On a gross scale, therefore, impurities should be more homogeneously distributed in rapid-freeze crystals than in Czochralski or zoned crystals. Because of the possibility of constitutional supercooling, however, it is quite possible that impurities are not homogeneously distributed on a microscopic scale in the rapid-freeze crystals. Generally the single crystal slabs which have been prepared are initially 5 to 7 mm thick. Thicker crystals may be obtained by using one of these slabs as a seed. EXTRACTION of uranium from ores is being ac-complished by processes which. for the most part, subject the entire ore to acid or carbonate leaching. Ore deposits with a U 3 O 8 content below 0.10 pct U 3 O 8 are seldom considered suitable for treatment by leaching. A preliminary concentration that would enrich the uranium content of an ore by a simple, low cost process based on physical properties of the ore might result in some low grade deposits becoming commercial ores. In addition, the process might be employed in existing operations to reduce transportation and leaching costs and to increase capacity of existing leaching plants. A study to attempt the development of a preliminary concentration process for primary uranium ores was undertaken by the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation under sponsorship of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. The objective of this work was to produce concentrates containing 0.25 pct U3O8 from the low grade ores tested. Ores Tested: The main effort was devoted to the low grade primary uranium ores from northwestern Saskatchewan. Samples were obtained from the Beaverlodge operation of the Eldorado Mining & Refining Ltd. Additional primary ores, obtained from deposits in Gilpin County, Colo., contained from 0.07 to 0.10 pct U3O8. Summary of Concentration Tests: The Beaverlodge ore was tested to determine amenability of the ore to concentration by magnetic, electrostatic, gravity, and scrubbing processes. None of these produced satisfactory results. Both gravity and magnetic processes produced fairly good concentrates when closely sized fractions of the ore were treated, but on the basis of treating the total ore, recovery was poor. Preparation of sized fractions and the low capacity of equipment for suitable concentration made these methods impractical. As flotation offered the advantage of treating the total ore without intermediate sizing, the main effort was in this direction. A flotation process was developed that fulfilled the concentration objectives as set by the AEC. Pilot plant testing was used to verify results obtained from laboratory batch testing. Mineralogy: A petrographic examination of the Beaverlodge ore included a study of polished sur- faces and identification of the radioactive mineral by autoradiograph and X-ray diffraction. Approximate quantitative mineral identification was as follows: quartz, 60 pct; orthoclase feldspar, 20 pct; chlorite, 10 pct; carbonates, 5 pct; and miscellaneous minerals, 5 pct. Included in this last group were plagioclase feldspar, pyrite, mica, chalcopyrite, pyroxene, sericite, magnetite, galena, and uraninite. The most general occurrence of uraninite was in the form of crusts and thin coatings on limonite-stained grains of pyrite, quartz, and pyrite-quartz intergrowth. At least 90 pct of the uraninite was still attached to other minerals in a 100 by 200-mesh size fraction. The uraninite crusts were as small as 10 to 20 µ diam, and 5 to 10 µ thick. The Flotation Process Petrographic examinations of the Beaverlodge ore had indicated the impracticability of attempting to concentrate the uranium by floating individual grains of uraninite. Liberation of the uraninite required grinding to sizes below those suitable for flotation. However, there was preferential association of the uraninite with some minerals while others were free of uraninite attachment. The approach to the development of a flotation process was, therefore, based upon an attempt to concentrate the uraninite by floating carrier minerals. The following paragraphs discuss the various stages of the process with regard to the factors tested and the conditions under which best results were obtained. Grinding: The most effective size range for flotation was —150 mesh + 13 µ. The —13 µ material in the final concentrate had a higher U3O8 content than the total ore, but not as high as the average concentrate; however, rejection of slimes before flotation was prohibitive because of the loss in uranium carried in the —13 µ fraction. Grinding techniques which contributed to a minimum production of fines, such as stage grinding, were then employed. Quartz and Silicate Depression: These minerals represented approximately 80 pct of the ore and were free to a large degree of uraninite attachment. Significant improvement in the grade of the concentrate was obtained by depression of these minerals with hydrofluoric acid or sodium fluoride. Promoter: Selective stage flotation of uraninite carrier minerals was simplified by development of a single promoter mixture. The mixture consisted of an emulsion of a fatty acid, fuel oil, and a petroleum sulfonate and was selected after a comprehensive series of tests. The importance of dissolved oxygen as a principal reagent in the refining of liquid steel and the necessity for its removal in the finishing of many grades have stimulated numerous studies of its chemical behavior in the steel bath. From the thermodynaniic viewpoint the essential data are those which determine the free energy of oxygen in solution as a function of temperature and composition of the molten metal. A number of experimental studies have been reported in recent years from which the free energy of oxygen in iron-oxygen melts can be obtained with a fair degree of accuracy for temperatures not too far from the melting point. Certain discrepancies remain, however, which imply considerable uncertainty at higher temperatures; also several sources of error were recognized in the earlier studies. It has been the object of the experimental work reported in this paper to reexamine these sources of uncertainty and to redetermine the equilibrium condition in the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen dissolved in liquid iron. The reaction and its equilibrium constant are: H2 (g) + Q = H2O (g); K1 _ PH2O / [1] Ph2 X % O Here the underlined symbol Q designates oxygen dissolved in liquid iron. The activity of this dissolved oxygen is known to be directly proportional to its concentrationl,2 and is taken as equal to its weight percent. The closely related reaction of dissolved oxygen with carbon monoxide has also been investigated:3,4,5 co (g) +O = CO?(g); K _ Pco2___ [2] K2= pco X % O [2] The two reactions are related through the wat,er-gas equilibriuni: H2 (g) + CO2 (g) = CO (g) + H2O (g); K2 = PCO X PH2O [3] PH2 X PCO2 and with the aid of the accurately known equilibrium constant of this reaction, it has been shown5 that the experimental data on reactions [1] and 121 are in fairly good, though not exact, agreement. Experimental Method Great care was taken to avoid the principal sources of error of previous studies, namely, gaseous thermal diffusion and temperature measurement. The apparatus was designed to provide controlled preheating of the inlet gases and to permit the addition of an inert gas (argon) in controlled amounts, two measures found to be essential for elimination of thermal diffusion. A known mixture of water vapor and hydrogen was obtained by saturating purified hydrogen with water vapor at controlled temperature. This mixture, with the addition of purified argon, was passed over the surface of a small melt (approximately 70 g) of electrolytic iron in a closed induction furnace. After sufficient time at constant temperature for attainment of equilibrium the melt was cooled and analyzed for oxygen. GAS SYSTEM A schematic diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig 1. Commercial hydrogen is led through the safety trap T and the flowmeter F. The catalytic chamber C, held at 450°C, was used to convert any oxygen into water-vapor. A by-pass B with stopcocks was provided so that the hydrogen could be introduced directly from the tank to the furnace when desired. From the catalytic chamber the gas passed through a water bath W, kept at the desired temperature by an auxiliary heating unit, so that the gas was burdened with approximately the proper amount of water vapor before it was introdvced into the saturator S. All connections beyond the catalytic chamber were of all-glass construction. Those connections beyond the water bath were heated to above 80°C to prevent the condensation of water vapor. After the saturator, purified argon was led into the steam-hydrogen line at J, and finally the ternary mixture was introduced into the furnace. THE SATURATOR The saturator unit comprised three glass chambers, as shown in Fig 1, the first two chambers packed with glass beads and partially filed with water and the third empty. Each tower had a glass tube with a stopper attached for the purpose of adjusting the amount of water in it. The unit was immersed in a large oil bath, which was automatically controlled with the help of a thermostat relay to constant temperature, ± 0.05ºC, using thermometers which had been calibrated against a standard platinum resistance thermometer. The performance of the saturator over the range of experimental conditions was checked by weighing the water absorbed from a measured volume of hydrogen; the observed ratio was always within 0.5 pct of theoretical.

The activities of chromium in solid Cr-Ti solulions contaitning from 10 to 90 at, pct Cr were measured over the temperatutre range 1250" to 1380°C. The Knzudsen effusion technique with direct weighing of the Knudsen cell was used. This was possible because the vapor pressure 0f chromium is about 600 times greater than the capor pressure of titanium so that the amount 0f titanium effusing could be neg-Lected. the activities of titanium were determined by g-raphical integration of the Gibbs-Duhertz equatiotz. The solutio~ls sllcdied exhibited positive deviations from Raoult's law, but they approached ideality as the temperature was raised from 125 to 138t C. The integral free energy of mixing was calclated from the activity values. AF has a maximum value of - 1.66 kcal a1 1390°C and a composition oj 55 at. pcl Cv. The free energy of formation of 'TiCr, is —0.76' lzcal a1 1250°C. The heats and entropies of mixing usere determined using the second law and thus tile mlues could be in error by a considerable amount. The Cv-Ti system is not a regular solution. ThE increasing emphasis on application of various models to alloy formation and solution behavior has led to an intensified interest in the thermochemistry of alloys. In a majority of the cases where different models have been applied the alloy system used was a simple one. However, the amount of data available on more complicated systems is small and in order to fully understand the behavior of metallic solutions more experimental work has to be carried out on these systems. The Cr-Ti system is reasonably complex and even though this system was being investigated as early as 1937 by Kroll,' no previous work has been done on the thermodynamic properties of either the liquid or solid state. This research was undertaken to determine the thermodynamic properties of solid Cr-Ti alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiments on the Cr-Ti system were carried out in a water-cooled metal vacuum system. This system is composed of a brass vaporization chamber wound with copper tubing for cooling purposes, a brass liquid-nitrogen trap, an oil diffusion pump, and a Duo-Seal forepump. The pressure in the system is measured with an ionization gage. The interior of the vaporization chamber is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The Knudsen cell is supported by the molybdenum tripod, and a magnetically operated shutter is provided to protect the Pyrex sighting glass against deposition of metallic vapors in the intervals between temperature measurements. Heating is accomplished by means of a 20-kw 450-kc Westinghouse oscillator. The susceptor in this case is 10-mil tantalum seamless tubing which also forms the outside of the sample container. The remainder of the sample container consists Of an im~ervims re-crystallized alumina crucible and a 10-mil-thick tantalum lid. Two holes are drilled in the lid. The diameters of these holes were measured with the calibrated stage of a "Tukon" microhardness tester. The thicknesses were measured with a micrometer. A Leeds and Northrup disappear ing-filament optical pyrometer was used to measure the temperature. This is sighted through the smaller of the two holes in the lid and corrections for the emissivity of the sample were not necessary since the ratio bf cell length to hole diameter was large enough to insure a hohlraum. The pyrometer was calibrated at the ~~t~~~l Bureau of Standards, and the correction for the Pyrex sighting window was determined in the laboratory. This paper presents results of a study to determine to what extent errors in estimated free gas saturation affect the results of static pressure calculations from build-up curves in two-phase systems. Use is made of the method of pressure build-up curve analysis developed by Miller, Dyes and Hutchinson1 , with modifications for two-phase flow advanced by Perrine2. Cornhined fluid compressibility of gas-oil mixtures is included, with special attention given to the discontinuity that occurs in fluid compressibility at the saturation pressure and its effect on static pressure calculations from build-up curves. The sensitivity of static pressure calculations to errors in gas saturation is considered over wide ranges of formation and fluid properties and reservoir pressure conditions. It is concluded from this study that for analyses of two-phase pressure build-up curves (I) the use of under-saturated crude compressibility data, even when producing GOR's are at or near solution values, will result in very significant negative errors in calculated static pressrrre, and (2) except for large values of buildup curve .slope and/or very low crude gravities, rather large errors in calculated gas saturation can he tolerated without .significant effect on calculated static pressures. The conc1usions arc qualified as referring only to the effects of gas saturation and excludc possible errors in the nuumerous other factors that enter into the ancllysis of pressure build-up curves. INTRODUCTION As part of the analysis of basic data for several major Eocene reservoirs in the Bolivar Coastal field (Western Venezuela), it was necessary to analyze a large number of pressure build-up curves for oil permeability and static reservoir pressure. From performance data it became apparent that gravity segregation is very active in these reservoirs. As a result of this performance it was recognized that the free gas saturation within the oil leg of the reservoirs would be small but would be subject to certain errors in calculation due to the inaccuracy of relative permeability data in the low gas saturation region. Since all of the various methods of build-up curve analysis were originally derived for sin- gle-phase, constant compressibility systems, and since the presence of a small but rather indeterminate gas saturation would greatly affect the reservoir fluid compressibility, a study was undertaken to investigate the effect of gas saturation on the results of two-phase pressure build-up analyses. TWO-PHASE BUILD-UP CURVE ANALYSIS The method of analysis used in this investigation is basically that originally developed by Miller, Dyes and Hutchinson1, with modifications for two-phase flow advanced by Perrine2. Miller, et al, showed that the original equation for single-phase permeability away from the well bore, held for two-phase flow except that the calculated permeability is the effective permeability to oil away from the wellbore. This finding was acknowledged by Per-rine, who also presented the equation for effective gas permeability* as Since Eqs. 1 and 2 contain no terms influenced by fluid compressibility, no distinct problem should develop in calculating permeability from two-phase build-up curves. In regard to the calculation of static reservoir pressure from build-up curves in single-phase systems, the modified Miller, et al, method as presented by Perrine is briefly as follows. 1. From build-up curve data, PVT data for the reservoir fluid and the well spacing and sand thickness, calculate the climensionless shut-in time corresponding to the highest value of actual shut-in time (t, hrs) on the straight-line portion of a semi-log build-up curve. Dimenrsionless shut-in time is related to actual shut-in time by the relation, t- 0.000264 kt 2. From a graph of dimension less shut-in time vs dimensionless pressure difference (Fig. 1 1 ) find the value of dimensionless pressure difference corresponding to the value of 7 calculated under (1) above. The isothermal formation of martensite in a 71 pct Fe, 29 pct Ni alloy is found to take place mainly by the nucleation of new plates rather than by the growth of existing ones, and is dependent on the temperature and time of the isothermal hold, the amount of atherrnal martensite present, the state of internal strain, and the application of tensile stress. The conclusion is reached that the isothermal nucleation is activated by thermal fluctuations superimposed on localized regions of very high strain. The reaction-path concept, involving martensite nucleation at strain embryos by athermal activation on cooling, or by thermal fluctuations on holding, reconciles the athermal and isothermal modes of transformation, and offers a unified picture of the kinetics of martensite formation. THE phenomenon of isothermal martensite formation has been the subject of considerable study lately,'-' and its reality has been thoroughly established. The existence of such isothermal transformation has been claimed to confirm the nucleation and growth hypothesis as applied to the martensitic reaction.1 " However, the isothermal formation of a martensitic phase is also compatible with the reaction-pathw escription of the transformation. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the isothermal mode of the martensitic reaction, both theoretically and experimentally, in order to test the likelihood of the above two mechanisms. Material and Methods The alloy used in this study contained about 71 pct Fe and 29 pct Ni. The complete analysis was 29.5 ± 0.2 pct Ni, 0.036 pct C, 0.02 pct N, 0.19 pct Mn, 0.09 pct Si, 0.008 pct P, and 0.006 pct S. The amount of isothermal transformation was determined by electrical resistance measurements using a Kelvin double bridge. The specimens were in the form of rods 1/16 in. diam x 4 in. long. Aus-tenitizing was performed at 1095°C for % hr either in a pre-purified nitrogen atmosphere or in an evacuated Vycor tube, followed by oil quenching to room temperature. After this treatment, the samples were completely austenitic, and the transformation studies were conducted at subatmospheric tempera- tures. Lineal analysis and X-ray determinations of retained austenite were used to calibrate the electrical resistance changes in terms of the percentage of martensite. The martensite range curve for this alloy is given in Fig. 9 of ref. 6. The M, temperature occurs at about -18°C (255°K). Reaction-Path Theory The nucleation and growth description of the martensitic transformation that occurs isothermally has already been given by Kurdjumow.','2 However, no comparable treatment exists using the reaction-path concept." Consequently this section presents the reaction-path description of the isothermal mode of the martensitic transformation. According to the latter theory, there is a reaction path (a strain) which describes the relative motion of the atoms during their transference from the austenitic to the martensitic state. The possibility exists, therefore, that the nucleation of a martensitic plate is accomplished by an embryo that comprises a state intermediate between that of austenite and martensite. This state may be attained within a finite volume by means of a homogeneous strain of the austenitic matrix. There is a free-energy barrier (F.) along the reaction path, corresponding to a critical strain in a critical volume. When activation is achieved, a spontaneous increase in strain and volume of the embryo takes place to generate the full-size martensitic plate. This mode of nucleation is to be distinguished from the more conventional mode involving embryos of the martensitic phase that merely grow in size by an interface motion. There are two ways whereby embryos in the austenitic phase can achieve the critical state of strain for isothermal nucleation: 1—through the formation of internal strains by plastic deformation or by stress; and 2—through thermal fluctuations, preferably superimposed upon existing internal strains. The activation free energy F,, must be supplied either mechanically by internal strains or thermally by energy fluctuations, or by a combination of both.

Heteroepitaxy of silicon on stoichiometric spinel has been studied. Both boron-doped (p-type) and arsenic-doped (n-type) single-crystal silicon films have been grown by the pyrolysis of silane on sioichiometric spinel (MgAl2O4) substrates prepared by a flux technique. The spinel crystals are free from strain and subgrains, and exhibit no thermal instability at temperatures employed for silicon deposition. The growth parameters of epitaxial silicon have been studied. Effects of substrate orientation, surface preparation, and growth conditions on the silicon Properties have been determined. The silicon-spinel composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, electron microscopy, and optical techniques. Information on epitaxial orientation relationship, defect structures and film-substrate interface has been obtained. A parallel orientation relationship was found between silicon and spinel. The silicon films exhibit no subgrain structures. However, growth pyramids, microtwins, stacking faults, and dislocations are the prevalent defects. The deformation of epitaxial silicon was measured by an X-ray technique. It was found that the epitaxial silicon is strained under compres-sive stress due to the thermal expansion difference between the film and substrate. The stress was estimated using the classical plate theory and beam equation. Electrical properties of the epitaxial silicon have been measured, including resistivity, carrier concentration, and Hall mobility. MIS and vertical through diffused junction structures have been fabricated wing silicon-spinel composite. Information on MIS characteristics, minority carrier life time, and junction properties has been obtained. THE achievement of single-crystal growth of large area silicon semiconductor films on oxide insulating substrates is of technical importance to many solid state electronic devices. The semiconductor-insulator composite structure is also of scientific interest because the heteroepitaxy is determined by the spatial relationship between the atomic arrangement in the substrate and that of the atoms in the appropriate crystallographic plane of silicon. The degree of crystalline perfection of the silicon deposits depends also on the physical condition of substrate surface. Epitaxial growth of silicon on commercial flame fusion Al-rich spinel (MgO:3.3A12O3) has been reported by several investigators.'-4 The lattice of spinel of this composition is distorted. The material cracks and exsolves the excess alumina in the lattice at temperatures (-1200°C) used in fabricating silicon devices. Stoichiometric MgA12O4 spinel exhibits neither lattice distortion nor thermal instability. Results are given on the epitaxial growth and characterization of silicon on stoichiometric spinel. EXPERIMENTAL Fabrication of Silicon-Spinel Composite Structures. The MgA12O4 spinel substrate wafers were prepared from bulk single crystals grown at about 1200°C by a flux technique5 using a PbF2 flux. The crystals are free from strain and subgrains, and exhibit a typical dislocation density of less than 50 lines per sq cm. The crystals are thermally stable without cracking and exsolution of alumina to at least 1500°C. The spinel crystals were oriented for cutting by the Laue X-ray back-reflection method.6 Substrate wafers (about 25 mil thick) of (Ill), (loo), and (110) orientations have been obtained bu cutting the X-ray oriented crystals using a standard type diamond wheel. An accuracy of better than 1/2 deg is maintained throughout the operation. The spinel substrate wafers were mechanically lapped and polished to produce the flat and smooth surface which is required for silicon epitaxy. Lapping was carried out with about 30-µ boron carbide abrasives to obtain a flat coplanar surface. The lapped surface was further polished using successively finer grades of alumina, ending with the 0.3-µ grade. After polishing the wafers generally have a flatness of ±0.4 µ per cm, as revealed by interferometry. Fig. 1 shows (111) oriented MgA12O4 spinel wafers of various shapes.

The sprayfan auxiliary ventilation system is a modified water spray system which directs intake air to and across the front of a continuous miner to prevent build up of methane gas and dust concentrations. This user's manual contains practical information concerning sprayfan: a. Description and capabilities b. Design c. Installation d. Operation e. Maintenance. Underground tests, independent laboratory tests, tests by MSHA, and independent installations by coal producers have confirmed the performance of the sprayfan system. There are currently 150 sprayfan systems in operation in underground coal mines.

The disposal of the brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has long been a constant source of trouble to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. The amount of oilfield brines Produced from wells on new properties may be almost negligible, but some older wells may produce several hundred barrels a day. A survey of almost 200 wells on 31 properties in the eastern part of Osage County, Okla., showed that during the month of November, 1928, the average production of water was 3.26 barrels per barrel of oil produced. The age of the wells included in this survey ranged from two to 28 years; the maximum amount of brine produced was 26 barrels of water to one barrel of oil and the lowest was one barrel of water to 27 barrels of oil. These figures apply to a small area. In other fields the production of water also varies widely; for example, in the Cushing4, Okla., field several yells were reported as having produced 100 barrels of water to every barrel of oil produced. Often the production of oil-field brines is decreased materially and the production of petroleum increased by the use of bottom hole Plugs and by a general repair and cementing of wells. The records5 of 22 wells cemented in the Gushing field showed that prior to the repair work, the average total dally production was 242.5 barrels of oil and 3,977.5 barrels of water. This paper describing the concentrator practice of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co. at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, is one of a series of articles on milling methods and costs being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The Cananea concentrator treats 2,400 tons of copper ore per day by preferential flotation, whereby the copper sulphides are floated and the iron pyrite depressed. During the first half of the year 1929 the heads to the concentrator averaged 3.29 per cent of copper, the recovery was 95.74 per cent of the total copper, and the concentrates produced contained 21.44 per cent of copper.

"The Logtung deposit discovered in 1976, is an example of large tonnage (162 million tonnes), low grade (0.13% WO3 and 0.052% MoS;) W(scheelite)-Mo mineralization related to multiple felsic intrusions. Because mineralization is predominantly fracture-controlled (> 95 %) rather than disseminated, Log tung is not a skarn deposit. Metamorphism of the Logtung country rocks (interbedded calcareous shale and graphitic quartizite) to a series of competent reaction skarns (quartz-diopside-garnet calc-silicate, biotite quartzite and wollastonite-vesuvianite calc-silicate) clearly precedes W-Mo mineralization. Hence mineralization was related to permeability created by hydraulic fracturing and not replacement processes.Logtung shows a theme of several phases of mineralization (4) related to multiple intrusions (>2) which is similar to that of the Climax and Urad-Henderson Mo systems. The earliest quartzmolybdoscheelite vein system, which consists of a typical ""porphyrystyle"" crackle-breccia of thin (0.5 mm to 4 mm) quartz-garnetdiopside- molybdoscheelite veins, is related to a high Si02 (approx. 76%), seriate-porphyritic monzogranite stock (approx. 2 km by 0.5 to 1 km) of Cretaceous age (118 ±2 Ma [2u]; Stewart, 1983). Later quartz-pyrite scheelite (fluorite-KINa-feldspars-molybdenite) veins, with prominent green, hornblende-bearing alteration selvages, and quartz-molybdenite (-pyrite-jluorite-scheelite) veins are related to a quartz-feldspar-spessartine-rich garnet porphyritic felsic dike complex approximately 500 m across. Both intrusive phases have anomalously high Wand Mo concentrations of about 100 ppm and 50 ppm respectively, which Stewart (1983) attributes to a primary enrichment. The final stage of mineralization consists of a prominent 4.5 km by 1 km zone of 1 em to 1 m wide polymetallic sheeted veins centred on the felsic dike complex. The system is zoned from quartz scheelite-molybdenite-pyrite-blue-green beryl-jluoritebismuthinite veins in the core to Pb-Zn-Ag veins with abundant arsenopyrite and minor Sn (approx. 0.1%) in the northeast. The focus of recurrent intrusive and hydrothermal activity was located above a flank or nose of the monzogranite stock.The distribution of WO3 and MoS2 grades within the approximately 750 m (across) by 300m (evaluation depth) mineralized zone is a result of the variable superimposition of the four separate vein systems each with different W:Mo ratios. Well-defined Wand Mo ore, shells such as those at Climax, Henderson and Mt. Emmons did not develop at Logtung. The upper surface of the mineralized zone, as shown by the 0.03% MoS2 contour defines an elongate dome with an apical region approximately coincident with the felsic dike complex. Hydrothermal alteration occurs as well-defined vein selvages, and not as pervasive zones.The Logtung deposit shows many similarities to porphyry Mo deposits in the western Cordillera and may be identified as a porphyry W(scheelite)-Mo deposit, with a W:·Mo ratio of 3.3:1. The principal reasons are: (1) mineralization is spatially associated with porphyritic granitic intrusions and (2) much of the scheelite and molybdenite occurs in typical ""porphyry-style"" vein stockworks"

Introduction The Horne mine, the property of Noranda Mines, Limited, has in the last six years become one of Canada's leading gold and copper producers. Since the smelter was blown-in during December, 1927, up to the end of 1933, it has produced approximately 1,200,000 oz. of gold and 35O,OOO,OOO lb. of copper. The property is situated within an area occupied entirely by pre-Cambrian rocks and characterized by the complexity of rock types and structures common in such terrain. But apart from this the mine also presents other features of unusual interest in the size, number, and variety of the ore-bodies, the mineralogical associations, and the rather exceptional values both in gold and copper. It is not surprising, therefore, that a study of the geology of the mine should bring to light many interesting problems. The present paper summarizes, as concisely as possible, the results of such a study. Actually, it is a much abridged version of a more comprehensive and detailed paper completed by the writer a year ago (1), but embodying certain corrections and additional data made possible as a result of further development at the mine and of field work carried out during the summer of 1933. Owing to limitations of space, the paper is, in the main, a presentation of conclusions arrived at in the course of the study. Much of the supporting evidence cited in the thesis referred to has, of necessity, been omitted here.
