Introduction The Hollinger cyanidation mill commenced operating in June, 1912, and 49,779,978 tons of solids had been discarded by the end of 1950. The present tailing disposal plant has been in operation since 1924 and holds 39,762,250 tons. The tailing disposal plant is on the property of Kayorum Gold Mines, Limited, about a mile and a quarter south of the mill. The area available for tailing covers 640 acres and is roughly l ¼ miles long by ¾ mile wide. Tailing was first deposited on the McKay veteran claims, l mile long by 1/2 mile wide, which were later included in the Kayorum property. This site sloped from northeast to southwest, the slope amounting to 106 feet between the northeast corner and the low land to the southwest. The low land was wet and a considerable area was covered with muskeg up to 17 feet deep. It was drained by a brook running across the property in a southwesterly direction. Later, when more ground was needed, the low-lying mining claims adjacent to the south and west boundaries were acquired to allow for the extension of the plant. This entailed some extra difficulties and expense that would not have been encountered had the whole of the present site been acquired with the original purchase. At the present time, the top of the tailing deposit stands at two elevations, but eventually the tailing deposited on the extension to the original plant will be raised to the same height as the older deposit. Previous to 1924, all of the tailing was deposited on Low land and in lakes near the mil1. Between 1924 and 1926 an increasing tonnage was sent to the McKay claims until, in 1926, all of it was being sent there. In 1936, the area of the deposit was extended and shortly afterwards all of the tailing was deposited on the new site.

Production of traprock occupies an important place in industry. In 1960 the output in the form of crushed stone reached nearly 58 million tons valued at $87 million. Traprocks are also shaped into blocks of dimension stone for monuments, building construction and decoration, and specialized products such as surface plates.

THE present era of exploitation of the Little Long Lac and Sturgeon River areas commenced in 1925, when Beardmore Gold Mines started development of what is now the property of Northern Empire Mines. A shaft was sunk in 1927-28 and a very limited amount of underground work was carried out, following which the property was shut down. It remained idle until 1932, when Empire Star Mines, a Delaware Company, optioned the property. This Company formed the Northern Empire Mines Company, Limited, to operate the mine, and immediately instigated an aggressive programme of surface and underground development. By the summer of 1933, sufficient ore was indicated to justify the installation of a small mill. The decision was also reached to bring in electric power. A power-line was built from Hydro, the Ontario Power Commission's development on the Nipigon river, to the mine, a distance of approximately 50 miles. This work was entirely financed by Northern Empire Mines. Mill construction was commenced in October, 1933, and completed by March, 1934, thus making this mine the first producer in this district.

Construction materials indeed face a dilemma...as does the building industry as a whole. A stop & go economy; a severe drop; in housing starts; lingering indecision over just what corrective steps are to be taken or to their degree of commitment; no less basic disagreement in regard to which of the, Nation's problems is really the most pressing -- inflation or recession? Optimism has become a rare quality these days. At moat the cautious view is that this new year will see a long, hard struggle back, with hopes that 1976 at least can truly mark a dual anniversary celebration for the United States and its economic health. Yet the paradox is that once recovery does return, those very construction minerals and materials --which in recent years have experienced the ups and downs of overcapacity, shortage, and now declining demand again-- will once more face the spectre of mass inability to service revived and growing needs for its product. Mounting costs, present marginal expansion investment, and substantial lead times required for new facilities to come into production, could well form a bottleneck to economic upswing. The result again can be another cycle of shortage-induced inflation, and with it continued gyrations within the demand supply relationships of the country's building industries.

"The International Cyanide Management Code (the Code) is a voluntary industry program for gold miners and associated cyanide transporters and cyanide producers. By becoming a signatory, a company commits to follow the CodeÆs principles and implement its standards of practice.Signatories are required to undergo an initial certification audit within three years and a recertification audit every subsequent three years. Recertification audits evaluate compliance over the preceding three-year period. This approach presents a number of challenges. Golder Associates has undertaken in excess of 75 initial certification audits and 25 recertification audits; more than any other audit firm. This paper outlines some of the challenges identified and lessons learnt from the recertification audit process. Central to the process is the challenge for organisations to maintain commitment to compliance over the full three-year period and effectively address deficiencies or non-conformances that may have occurred during that period in a prompt manner.The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) provides guidance in evaluating deficiencies or non-conformances, which requires consideration of the æcauseÆ, ædurationÆ and æongoing compliance effortsÆ and an assessment of the concept of ægood faithÆ in response actions. Golder AssociatesÆ experience with the recertification process highlights some common deficiencies with Code compliance programs, such as: system breakdowns (leading to ineffective communication between departments or loss of information) exceedance of discharge limits inadequate inspections, maintenance activities and associated record-keeping.Such deficiencies can be attributed to: personnel changes organisational changes or structures management systems (eg integrated or standalone) awareness and interpretation of Code requirements transparency of management decisions with Code implications.We have identified that ongoing programed assessment is an effective strategy in maintaining Code compliance.CITATION:Beazley, R J and Woods, M C, 2013. The paper traces the pattern of spontaneous combustion in the workings of what was originally Hemsworth Colliery, but since July 1967 is now part of South Kirby Colliery. Examination is made of the Barnsley Seam sections and the part played by the top section of the seam as it comes in close proximity to the main seam. In this area of the colliery nine mechanised faces were set away between the years 1953 and 1968, every one "fired" at the pillar edge and six "fired" at the face line when production had ceased. The paper deals with the different preventative measures used, from sandbag walls, cement injections, spraying with polyurethane, until finally using Mandoseal as a sealant. Since the latter method was first used, the last three faces worked in this particular area were all salvaged completely, without any sign of a heating developing.

This paper presents a theoretical investigation on the ionic equilibrium of Fe(III)?Ni(II)?H2SO4?H2O system. A non-ideal speciation model is developed to calculate the concentration distribution of iron and nickel species in a mixed ferric and nickel sulphate aqueous solution over the pH range from 0 to 4 and temperature from 25 to 100°C. A series of speciation diagrams for iron and nickel species is plotted with the effects of ionic strength and temperature on the equilibrium constants being taken into account. The ionic strength-dependent equilibrium constant is treated through a semi-empirical Vasil'eV equation, which is based on an extended Debye?Hückel theory. A Helgeson model is applied to extrapolate the equilibrium constant to elevated temperature. The ionic equilibrium reactions are described by a group of numerical equations containing the temperature and ionic strength-dependent equilibrium constants, which are solved by the Newton-Raphson method. The speciation model is also applied to estimate the hydrogen ion activities and corresponding pH values. The calculated pH values are in agreement with the experimentally measured pH, and are compared to literature data and pH values produced by the Visual MINTEQ® program (a computer code for the calculation of chemical equilibrium in natural aqueous system). This investigation provides a deep insight into the ionic equilibrium behavior of a mixed metal sulphate aqueous system which commonly occurs in hydrometallurgical processing. "GeneralWabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of seven steel companies and Pickands Mather & Co. The mining and concentrating facilities are located in southwestern Labrador and the pelletizing and shiploading facilities are at Pointe Noire, 200 miles south, near the town of Sept-lies.The operation is based on a 5 ½ sq. mi. specular hematite deposit with a reserve of 375 million tons of concentrate. Annual production capacity is rated at 6 million tons of pellets per year. The final upgrading process utilizes high-tension separation of silica following wet autogenous grinding, spiral gravity separation and fluo-solids drying. The concentrate is railed in closed cars to Pointe Noire. The concentrate is reground dry and pelletized on Dravo Lurgi travelling grate machines to produce an oxide pellet with 65.5% Fe, 3.0% Si02, 1.95% Mn and 93.5% Tumble Index.HistoryPlant operations commenced in 1965 with a concentrator capacity of 5.3 million tons per year and a pelletizing capacity of 4.8 million tons per year. The original facilities for classifying the crude ore into fine and coarse fractions for storage purposes before reblending as autogenous mill feed were found to be unnecessary and were by-passed after plant startup. Capacity of the operation was increased to 6.0 million tons of pellets per year in 1968. This increased capacity required the installation of an additional160 cleaner spirals in the ore dressing plant, a new 5000 hp ball mill, three balling circuits and increased cooling air capacity in the pellet plant.In 1970, the regrind circuit in the pellet plant was converted to dry grinding and a significant reduction in grinding media consumption and maintenance costs was realized. A ninth grinding mill of 5000 hp capacity was installed to compensate for the reduced capacity in going from wet to dry grinding."

The solubility of rare earth (RE) salts in aqueous solutions depends on many factors including the type of cations and anions in solution, their concentrations, temperature and the type of solid precipitated. Experiments were conducted using anhydrous La2(SO4)3 and Ce2(SO4)3⋅8H2O as solids and lanthanum(III) perchlorate prepared by dissolving La2O3 in HClO4 solutions as RE-sources. Solutions of H2SO4, H3PO4 and their mixtures in the presence or absence of Na+, Ca2+, Fe(III) or Al(III) as perchlorates served as test solutions. Saturated solutions and precipitated solids were assayed and characterized using standard techniques to show that the La(III) and Ce(III) ions precipitate as hydrated sulphates, phosphates or double salts with sodium, depending upon the solution composition. The change in solubility of RE-salts with solution composition and temperature is the result of the composite effect of changes in solubility products (pKSP) of salts, pKa of acids and other equilibrium constants for ion-association.

This report describes investigations by the Bureau of Mines designed to establish the noise level and spectrum of various types of pneumatic rock drills and to furnish information that would be useful in conducting sound measurements in mining environments and in reducing the noise generated in pneumatic drilling. These investigations show that (1) the noise generated by the drills in the frequencies below 100 cps is caused by the impact of the piston and drill steel, in the frequency range between 100 and 2,000 cps by the exhausting of air from the ports, and in the frequencies above 2,000 cps by the resonant frequencies of steel drill parts and of drill steel; (2) satisfactory instruments and instrumentation systems are available for field and laboratory measurements; (3) reliable sound measurements can be made in mining environments; and (4) devices can be developed that will abate the noise.

The gravity recoverable gold (GRG) parameter reflects liberated gold or gold-dominated composite particles that can be recovered by gravity separation. Recoveries depend upon mineralogy, in situ particle size and the comminution and extraction method used. Any ore bearing >15 per cent of gold greater than 50 ¦m in size is likely to have a GRG component. The principal characterisation methodology applied is the three-stage GRG (3GRG) test, based on a 40 kg to 100 kg sample. An alternative is the single-stage GRG test (SGRG), which is generally based on a 20 kg sample. Experience has shown that GRG values can vary throughout an orebody, particularly within different grade and/or mineralogical domains. Test programs must consider sample frequency and mass. This study demonstrates the variability of GRG results based on different sample masses. Consecutive underground faces on a coarse-gold dominated quartz vein were sampled taking five different masses from each. Each sample was processed using a SGRG approach. Subsequently, each development round was batched through a small gravity production plant. The results show that the small samples understate the plant GRG and show inter-sample variability. Large samples show less variability and a SGRG closer to the plant GRG. A high SGRG broadly correlates to higher gold grades, more coarse gold and larger gold particles. These results are intuitively correct, but indicate the likely challenges of sampling for gold recovery in heterogeneous systems.CITATION:Dominy, S C, 2013. General Description Due to the extreme cold weather experienced in Flin Flon during the winter months, thought and precaution were necessary in the design of the plant buildings. The machine shop, carpenter shop, drill shop, and coal plant buildings are similar in the building materials used in their construction. They are sided with two-inch shiplap, insulated with celotex and asbestos paper, and covered with corrugated iron on all side-walls. Roofing consists of 2 by 4 lumber on edge, laminated, and further covered by celotex and three-ply roofing. These buildings are heated by means of unit heaters. The heaters are primarily steam-heated radiators, through which the air of the buildings is circulated by electrically-driven fans. Our machine shop is located to the east of, but central to, the main operating buildings of the mine and plant, and is so connected by a net work of tracks as to be able to serve all portions of the entire plant conveniently. The building is divided into two bays, the main bay 53 ft. by 340 ft., and the east bay 24 ft. by 340 ft. The shop office and drafting room, a two-story annex 24 ft. by 30 ft., is located on the west side of the shop. The arrangement within the shop is such as to house conveniently the several departments, namely, heavy machine tool section, repair floor section, boiler shop heavy tool and floor section, blacksmith heavy tool and forge section, tool room, electric welding rooms, stock room, tin and copper shop, and electrical parts and armature winding and repair shop (see Figure 1). All the heavy tools, the repair floor section, and railway tracks are so located in the large open bay as to be fully serviced by an electrically operated 15-ton bridge crane, with a span of 50 feet and a travel the full length of the shop. A standard-gauge railway track, branched off the main line, penetrates the full depth of the building. This track lies along the extreme east side of the main bay, allowing easy entrance and movement of rolling stock and heavy machinery, loaded on standard flat-cars, to the repair floors in the main bay. Eight jib cranes, affixed to building columns, further facilitate the heavy repair work throughout the various shop divisions. Our light and heavy machine tools are standard equipment, not unlike tools used in mine, mill, and railway shops.

Canada's only current tungsten producer started up in 1962 with a small open-pit mine on the Flat River , 180 air miles north of Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. The orebody was in a contact-metamorphic skarn zone and contained about 1.5 million tons of ore grading an estimated 2.47% W03 and 0.5% copper. Near the end of the open pit , a new zone was discovered on the lower limb of the same structure, and the decision to go underground was made in 1972. The new "E Zone" contains over 4 million tons of ore grading an estimated 1.6% W03 and 0.28% Cu , and has been supplying the concentrator at about 175,0 00 tons/ year since late 1974. A continuing program of change and up-grading is necessary in the conversion from a seasonal open-pit mine with limited life to an underground operation with twenty years of reserves. Changes are necessary in plant and services as well as the mine. Also, environmental protection requirements have changed from rudimentary to rigorous over the life of the operation. This paper sums up the changes in the operation since 1971 and outlines the changes yet to come.

In order to evaluate the corrosion resistance of zirconium in mineral extraction processes, such as a clay-hydrochloric acid leaching process for extracting alumina, the Bureau of Mines conducted corrosion studies in HCl-AlC13-FeC13 environments. A series of weight loss and electrochemical tests were conducted at 25° and 65° C in aluminum chloride (AlC13) plus hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions containing 0 to 1,000 ppm ferric ion. It was determined that zirconium, which normally exists in a passive state in chloride-containing solutions, undergoes pitting attack in solutions containing more than 100 ppm of ferric ion. It is also shown that an oxide film prepared in air at high temperature offers protection in acid solutions containing levels of ferric ion from 300 to 1,000 ppm.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated various methods for identifying sources of mercury vapor in excess of the threshold limit value (TLV) of 0.05 mg of mercury per cubic meter of air set by the American Council of Government and Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for mines and mineral processing plants. Chemical spot tests and portable devices for mercury determination were evaluated, based on information from published sources and performance in laboratory tests. Among the parameters examined were sensitivity, interferences, cost, ease of use, and other factors pertinent to field application, More than 50 methods were evaluated. The investigators found that many readily available methods are suitable for identifying sources of mercury vapor in mines and mineral processing plants. The best method appears to be one that uses a commercially available mercury test paper sensitive only to mercuric ions. For some of the more promising chemical spot tests, this report includes step-by-step instructions for field application.

"While distribution of air currents to working faces is a necessity in coal mines, especially those having explosive gas, advancing faces in metal mines rarely have circulating air other than the ordinarily inadequate amount supplied through the compressed air system. Even where comparatively large quantities of air pass through main mine shafts and levels. whether the circulation is actuated by fans or by natural ventilation, only occasionally can a metal mine be found where any considerable percentage of the ""blind ends"" has circulating air of sufficient velocity to be measured by an anemometer or even be discerned by deflection of flame of candle, or of acetylene lamp; and unfortunately these ""blind ends"" include nearly all of the places from which rock is taken.During several years study of metal-mine ventilation in various mining districts of the United States, it has been found that in some mines many of the workers in ""blind ends"" practically continually breathe air with 0.02 to 0.04 per cent of CO gas from unremoved fumes from explosives; in other mines CO2 chiefly from timber decay and breathing of men, is so high that a candle will not burn though usually the acetylene lamp will, hence oxygen is below 17 per cent but above 12 per cent; in some regions CO2 from strata fills the entire mine forcing cessation of work; in other mines in dead ends, gases such as nitrogen, H2S, SO2, etc., are found under some conditions. In many regions with hot rock or water (especially in deep workings) men in blind ends must work with little or no circulation, in air above SO degrees F. and even above 90 degrees, relative humidity only too frequently being around 100 per cent; in other regions workers in blind ends in practically ""dead"" air must continually breathe enormous quantities of finely divided rock dusts. All of the above conditions are decidedly harmful to health and prevent the worker from delivering anything approaching an adequate quantity of work, and in addition, some of these conditions have direct or indirect effect in bringing about definite increase of accidents; all of the above mentioned bad conditions in ""blind ends"" in metal mines as well as their ill effects, are remediable by providing at those places adequate quantities of fresh circulating air."

A high purity electrolysis solution is essential for hydrometallurgical zinc winning processes. For this reason ferric iron containing compounds such as jarosite are precipitated as iron and impurity collector during the calcine leaching. Jarosite thus forms a chemical waste and creates environmental problems. This research contributes to the development of a wet jarosite treatment process, where less contaminated jarosite is produced which can act as an iron source. The present work studies jarosite precipitation kinetics and the uptake of zinc cations in batch and continuous experiments. The distribution coefficient for zinc in continuous experiments is constant for a wide ratio of zinc over ferric ions in the solution. Addition of NH, + ions in batch experiments accelerates the conversion rate equivalent to the driving force increment. Addition of 50,2-ions above the stoichiometric ratio increases the conversion rate less then could be expected from the increase in the estimated driving force. Zinc ions tend to retard the conversion rate. An increasing reaction temperature increases the conversion rate. Below 75 ?C the conversion rate approximates zero.

The flotation work on samples from nine fluorspar properties in Crittenden and Livingston Counties, Ky., reported herewith was part of a wartime project that resulted in increasing the supply of metallurgical-grade fluorspar. The samples were tailings, dumps, and waste rock that had been rejected in previous milling operations. All were treated successfully by flotation to yield metallurgical-grade concentrates with recoveries ranging from 77.5 to 98.3 percent of the fluorite. After the laboratory testing, the results of which were available to the owners and operators of the properties, many of the tailing ponds and rock dumps were milled. The real value of this report, therefore, is to show the operators of gravity concentration plants the possibilities of re-treating waste products by flotation either at some future time or currently with the gravity

A centrifugal float-and-sink test procedure has been developed by the Bureau of Mines to reduce the time for the gravimetric separation of coals finer than l4-mesh from as long as 24 hours to less than 1 hour. Comparative tests indicated that centrifuging a minus 14-mesh Pittsburgh-bed coal for 20 minutes at 1,500 revolutions per minute produced results that compared favorably with static float-and-sink test results. Standard deviations of the mean recovery and ash content of the float obtained centrifugally ranged from 1.31 and 0.04 percent, respectively, at 1.30 specific gravity to 0.21 and 0.05 percent, respectively, at 1.60 specific gravity. As in static separations, retreatment of the products separated at low specific gravities was required.
