During the tapping and casting of manganese ferroalloys, fumes are generated and released to the working environment. The fumes are mostly composed of metallic oxides generated due to reaction between high temperature molten metal and ambient oxygen in the air. From an environment perspective, it is important to limit these emissions. However, to do so, it is important to understand fuming mechanisms and kinetics as well as fume compositions, i.e. element behavior during the oxidation process of liquid manganese ferroalloys. Silicomanganese alloys are composed of aminimum of 65 wt% Mn and 17 wt% Si, 2 wt% C as well as minor and trace elements. These elements include Fe, Mg, Al and other elements originating from ores and reductants. Trace elements behavior in fume from liquid silicomanganese generated under an impinging air jet in the temperature range of 1450–1700 °C has been investigated in this work. The thermodynamic and kinetic conditions governing the generation mechanisms are discussed.

"The problem of gold recovery by gravity from high density gangues is first discussed from a fundamental perspective. Three potential difficulties are presented: poor liberation and fine gold particle size, concentrate bed erosion by coarse dense particles, and slow percolation of gold particle through the high density gangue bed. Two case studies are presented to illustrate the impact of these three problems on circuit performance and the feasibility of gravity recovery. It is concluded that careful testing can determine the scope of the first problem and feed preparation can limit the extent of the second. The third problem is clearly the most serious and results in lower gravity recoverable gold recoveries than would be achieved with the same recovery effort on a low density gangue application.IntroductionSince the commercialisation of the Knelson Concentrator in 1980, gold gravity recovery has experienced a surge in interest, in Canada and the United States first, then Australia, Zimbabwe and Russia, and finally worldwide. Table I details number of units sold in various countries, which corresponds approximately to their importance as gold producers 1. Exceptions. such as the low rank of South Africa or the importance of Zimbabwe, despite the much higher gold throughput of the former, are generally the result of differences in the effectiveness of the local marketing strategies, as well as a reflection of the ""philosophy of recovery"" prevalent in the country.The impact of the Knelson has not been felt equally in all plants. Typically, a highly successful application falls into the following categories: (a) alluvial or hard rock recovery for which gravity is the sole recovery method, (b) hard-rock free gold milling with ores which have a very high gravity-recoverable gold (GRG) content, (c) low grade sulphide copper-gold ores which include flotation ahead of cyanidation and (d) free-milling gold ores ahead of Other applications can be successful, but are not as common. The ""explosion"" of centrifuge concentration, of which the Knelson is the most successful but by no means the sole model, has created a certain euphoria which can be summarized as ""gravity recovery will improve the profitability of gold milling, no matter what."" This presentation is about applications that are not so successful, or even downright unsuccessful. The rationale is not to down-play gold gravity recovery, but to set it in its rightful position: metallurgically, it is not appropriate all of the times; it can become inappropriate if poorly designed; and it can be metallurgically possible but economically unjustifiable. In this paper, this will be illustrated and explained rather than demonstrated, with the use of both industrial plant surveys and laboratory test work. Alternate gravity approaches will be suggested."

This work is a codification and annotation of the Congressional enactments relating to minerals, mineral lands, and mining. It covers every enactment of Congress from the original ordinance of 1785 to the present time, as well as all sections of the Revised Statutes of the United States relating to these subjects. These laws are grouped according to their general subject matter, and are arranged thereunder in numerical or chronological order. Many of the mining statutes include matter not pertinent to the subject, and only those parts of such acts are quoted as will properly show their relation to minerals and mineral lands and indicate how they should be construed. Some mining acts have been repealed or have become obsolete, and others have become incorporated substantially in sections of the Re- vised Statutes; but these are retained in order to show the changes made, and the constructions placed thereon by the courts are given as aids in construing the new or repealing acts. The annotations consist of legal propositions abstracted from the decisions of the various courts and executive officers of the Govern- ment that have interpreted the sections and statutes so codified. These legal propositions are arranged under the different sections and acts with appropriate headings, titles, and subtitles, in logical order, exhibiting the present status of each particular section or act and its application to the subject of mines and mineral lands. The annotations do not purport to be abstracts of decisions on the sub- stantive law of mines and mining generally, but are limited strictly to the interpretation placed on a given section or act definitely re- ferred to by a court or executive officer by the number of the section of the Revised Statutes or the volume and page of the Statutes at Large in which the Congressional enactment is found. It may be observed that the legal propositions stated are not always pertinent to the particular section or act under which they are classed and of which they purport to give a construction. The arrangement, however, is not an arbitrary one, but is so made for the reason that the courts or officers in the construction of a particular section or act definitely referred to by number or volume and page incorporated in the decision matter not strictly pertinent to the par- ticular section or act so designated. Although several models for the surface tension of molten oxide slag have been proposed, suitably accurate predictions of this property are not yet possible. The surface tension, or surface excess free energy, of molten oxides is largely determined by the ionic coordination induced by surface relaxation. However, the associated mechanism of surface structural relaxation for molten oxide mixtures such as slag is complex and not yet fully understood. To allow a better evaluation of surface relaxation characteristics, the present work analysed the ionic coordination associated with the surface-relaxed states of several oxide mixtures. This work especially focused on calcium aluminate slags because these materials exhibit complex relationships between composition and surface tension. The effects of incorporating low concentrations of SiO2 as a surface active component on the surface ionic coordination were also examined. X-ray absorption techniques were used to assess oxygen and cationic elements in glassy samples after surface relaxation treatments, and molecular dynamics simulations based on a polarisable ion model of molten slag with vacuum/melt interfaces were also performed. The X-ray absorption techniques provided data related to electron yields (which are primarily associated with surface features) and fluorescence yields (which evaluate the bulk material). Thus, the ionic coordination characteristics of both regions were investigated. The results of molecular dynamics calculations allowed statistical analysis of the distributions of Al- or Sicentred polymorphs as well as the bond angles between cations and oxygen anions in the vacuumexposed and bulk regions in the equilibrated melt. The results indicated that bridging oxygen ions were preferentially distributed in the relaxed surface region rather than non-bridging oxygens. These bridging oxygen ions represented vertex connections between AlO4 or SiO4 tetrahedra. In the case of the calcium aluminate slags, the addition of one Ca2+ ion as charge compensation for two Al3+ ions was found to be necessary to form two AlO4 tetrahedra. This specific feature of surface ionic coordination could be responsible for the complex trends observed in surface tension data. The incorporation of low concentrations of SiO2 reduced the proportion of tetrahedrally-coordinated Al ions such that higher coordination states become dominant in the bulk of the material, whereas AlO4 tetrahedra were preferentially distributed in the surface region. SiO4 tetrahedra were the preferred Si-centred polymorph and were likely connected to one another to form bridging oxygen ions at the surface. On the basis of these results, a model to predict slag surface tension was proposed, and the energy of the formation of the ionic clusters resulting from surface relaxation was taken into account.

"In the present research, recycling feedstock of silicon for Photovoltic (PV) application is investigated. Whether these recycling feedstocks are reliable in the future use is discussed in this work to assess the properties of the crystal silicon ingot, which is commercially pulled from top-cuts of casted multicrystalline ingot via one kind of Czochralski method - FerroTech. Dopant is the acceptor type Boron (B) and growth direction was <100>. Crystal diameter and the length were 190mm and about 1700mm, which were controlled by the temperature and the pulling speed, then cut to 156mm * 156mm wafers with 2000um and 200um thickness. Resistivity measurements of these wafers by Four Point Probe (FPP) are in good agreement to the calibrated profile after Rapid Thermal Process (RTP). In this work, the Minority Carrier Lifetime MCI, shown by Carrier Density Image (CDI) and Quasi Steady State Photo Conductance (QSSPC), gives the mapping results on the cross section and the relationship to the injection level, increases in an arrange from 40us to 90us along the ingot height, which is abnormal distribution compared to the standard ingot. Then Oxygen and other metal impurities distributions, measured by Flourier Transform Infra - Red (FTIR) respectively, account for the novel phenomenon of the continuously increased MCI. Various types of heat treatments were performed on these wafers (different ingot and different positions) in N 2 and 0 2 mixture atmosphere. Before and after heat treatment, micro-defects were revealed by copper decoration and etching work. Solar cells are fabricated by Energy Research Center of the Netherlands from the experimental ingot, and processed under an industrial standard line. Compared to results of the reference mono-crystalline and multi-crystalline silicon solar cells, the performances of experimental ones show excellent efficiency values up to 18.5%, and Jsc values up to 37mA/cm2.IntroductionThe PV industry has gone through rapid development, with a high growth rate resulting in an increasing demand for silicon feedstock. In addition, costs in production need to be reduced such that solar energy can compete other conventional and renewable energy. Searching low cost, reliable and efficient feedstock is one promoting way to improve and enhance the competitiveness of the PVindustry.More and more researchers start searching new raw materials for PV application [1]-[4]. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health-Spokane Research Laboratory (NIOSH-SRL) have developed a Shaft Conveyance Monitoring System (SCMS). Assessment of current hoisting technology has shown that monitoring wire rope tension and conveyance position and load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety, production, and maintenance advantages. The SCMS consists of conveyance position and guide displacement sensors, a battery power supply and charging system, and a new sensor to measure hoist rope tension. This device provides a warning of the occurrence of ?slack rope? a particularly dangerous condition. A 2.4 GHz radio link transmits data to the hoistroom. A reduced scale hoisting test facility has been constructed to test these components prior to field trials. The advantages of monitoring wire rope tension and conveyance position and load directly from a skip or cage top will be discussed. Field tests are underway in full-size shafts to refine the concept and evaluate long-term reliability and maintenance requirements. Application of this technology may result in decreased maintenance costs as well as safer, more productive hoisting operations.

"The agglomerating index of coal is an index based upon the nature of the coke residue left when the standard volatile-matter determination of the well-known proximate analysis is made. In this determination a small amount of coal is heated in a container to about 950° C. (1,742° F.), at which temperature the volatile matter is driven off, leaving a coke formation. The coke residues for various coals are quite different in physical structure: and, for some time past, work has been done on studies of the nature of these residues in connection with the coking of coal. In 1934 Gilmore, Connell, and Nicolls proposed use of the agglomerating index for indicating the dividing line between noncaking coals and those having weakly caking properties. 4/ Its use was adopted in the standard classification of coals by rank as a requisite physical property index to differentiate semianthracite from low-volatile bituminous coal and also high-volatile ""C"" bituminous from subbituminous ""A"" coal, as shown in table 1, the standard coal classification adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association. 5./In studying the agglomerating properties of coals based on the coke residue the Bureau of Mines has adopted the notation given in table 2. Coals that in the volatile-matter determination give a coke residue either in the form of an agglomerate button that will support a 500-gram weight without pulverizing or a button that shows swelling or cell structure are considered to be agglomerating."

Introduction This paper is an amplification of the paper presented by the writer at the last (1930) Annual Meeting of the Institute (1), and is somewhat in the nature of a progress report upon the introduction of pyrite into the field of Canadian consumption. The burner installed at the plant of the Canada Power & Paper Corporation, St. Maurice division, has been slightly changed in dimensions and has been put into continuous operation during the past year. As predicted, it has been possible to somewhat increase the steam consumption and at the same time decrease the amount of sulphur remaining in the calcine. The grade of the sulphur-dioxide gas produced has been maintained very steadily at 12 per cent, and sufficient experience has been obtained to determine the renewal cost of continuous operation. The object of this paper now is to encourage the development of pyrite, particularly by-product flotation pyrite, as it is shown that there is a very definite field in Canada for this material and that all the previous objections to the use of pyrite have been overcome, and that the use of the material in practice in paper mills has been developed to such a point that the operation of manufacturing the sulphite cooking-liquor is as simple as, or simpler than, the present style of operation with the use of sulphur.

The research and characterisation for compositional, physicochemical, structural, electrical and flotation properties of various pyrite samples for a copper-zinc sulfide ore was carried out. Various methods were used during the research, such as optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA), phase emission analysis, routine chemical analysis, auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), back-scattered electron images (BSE), potentiometry, and instrumental neutron-activation analysis, flotation. Analysis of obtained results established the interrelation between impurity structures and concentration of electric charge carriers in minerals, Butyl xanthate sorption and flotation yield of pyrite. The research concluded that pyrite samples differ by morphology, micro defects of structure, concentration of donor and acceptor impurities (Co, As, Sb, etc.) and conductivity parameters (thermo-electrical force, specific resistance and concentration of charge carriers The peculiarity of pentagon-dodecahedral pyrite is the high concentration of electric charge carriers (electrons) and the more negative surface potential (by 25–75 mV) in comparison to cubic pyrite. The surface of cubic varieties is more active, therefore it is oxidized in alkaline lime medium much faster, than the surface of pentagon-dodecahedral varieties. This phenomenon is caused by high reaction ability, irregular jointing and defects of cubic pyrite. This promotes the increase of calcium ion sorption on its surface and the decrease of Butyl xanthate sorption. According to this, an increase in alkalinity (lime medium) from a pH of 10.0–11.5 leads to an increase of gold content reporting to the tail of bulk flotation. Gold content is increased from 0.58 g/t (?? 9.5) to 1.9 g/t (?? 11.6), which represents an increase in gold recovery of 24.68 to 79%, respectively.

Numerous proteins of varying properties are available in extracellular bacterial proteins (EBP) isolated from Paenibacillus polymyxa. EBP was fractionated through ammonium sulfate precipitation in a controlled fashion and characterized through SDS-PAGE technique. Different groups of proteins, (Group A~D) exhibited varying degrees of surface affinity to minerals such as quartz, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Interaction with mineral specific bioproteins rendered pyrite and chalcopyrite hydrophilic while surface of quartz, galena and sphalerite turned more hydro-phobic. Specific groups of proteins could thus be used for selective separation of galena, sphalerite and quartz from pyrite and chalcopyrite (as a mixed sulfide) through microbially-induced flotation or selective flocculation.

"In order to recover nickel ion in a spent electroless nickel - phosphorus alloy plating bath and, at the same time, to remove impurities such as iron and zinc, the applicability of solvent extraction with LlX84I as the extractant has been investigated using actual spent solution. Although the extraction efficiency of nickel from the spent solution is considerably lower than that from the nickel sulfate-nitrate solution, nickel in the spent solution is selectively extracted with high efficiency at the pH of 6 - 7. The extracted nickel is effectively stripped by sulfuric acid at a pH of less .than· 3. On the basis of these results, a· flowsheet for recovering nickel from the spent solution is proposed Chemical equilibrium calculations of the spent solution has shown that the complex formations of nickel with anions such as lactate and phosphonate ions become predominant in the pH range between 2 and 6. This results in the depression of nickel extraction efficiency from the spent solution as compared with that from the .nickel sulfate-nitrate solution. By combining these aqueous equilibrium calculations with the· extraction model considering the extraction stoichiometry and the aggregation of the extractant in the organic phase, the extraction behavior of nickel is quantitatively predicted.IntroductionElectroless plating is indispensable for the recent advanced industries such as the electronic and mechanical industries. Electroless plating baths are repeatedly used by supplying the metal salts; however, the accumulation of the counter anions of the metal ions, the components formed by the oxidation of the reducing reagents in the plating baths, and the metal ions as impurities dissolved from the surface of the objective materials degrades the· quality of the plating. Thus, the baths are finally treated by a precipitation method to form a large amount of metal sludge, which is disposed in dumping sites. Therefore, from the standpoints of environmental protection and resource preservation, it is highly desired to establish a recycling process of the plating baths with minimum emission. Solvent extraction seems to be one of the 'suitable methods to recover metals from the spent electroless plating baths, because the concentration of the metal ion in the baths is relatively high, which is advantageous to solvent extraction as compared with the ion-exchange and adsorption methods. Some studies about the application of solvent extraction have already been carried out using simulated spe11t electroless plating baths [1-3]."

"A spatially-discretized heap leach simulation model was developed within the GoldSimTM modeling framework for the Coeur Rochester Mine, Nevada. The model is being evaluated by Rochester as a means of improving forecasting of silver and gold production on an actively loaded valley fill heap leach facility. Optimization of future heap leach operations and crusher product size is also being evaluated with this software. Simulation modeling incorporates metallurgical data such as mine planning, particle size distribution of placed ore, stacking plans, pad geometry, and leaching dynamics. The heap leach model is represented as a discretized matrix with lifts providing vertical separation to form 19,840 spatially discrete cells. Each cell is quantified with regard to ore properties and metal content. The model tracks solution and cyanide-complexed silver and gold within each cell as a function of time based on pad operations, unsaturated flow properties, and kinetic rates. Practical heap leach management and daily operation will be discussed as it relates to the simulation and forecasting model. INTRODUCTION The Rochester mine, and associated valley fill heap leach facilities, is an open-pit silver and gold mine located in Pershing County, Nevada. In 2015 Rochester produced approximately 4.6M troy oz silver (Ag) and 52K troy oz gold (Au) through combined cyanide heap leaching of the Stage II, III and IV heap leach pads with recovery via a Merrill Crowe process plant. Rochester is actively stacking and leaching ore on the Stage III Heap Leach Pad. The Stage III pad contains approximately 70M tons of ore in a valley fill configuration and is forecasted to receive an additional 20M tons of ore by the life-of-pad in 2019. The ultimate height of the pad is permitted to be 400 ft above the liner and solution collection system. Approximately 80 percent of the ore loaded on the Stage III pad is produced from tertiary crushing split from two crushing circuits that produce a nominal 80 percent passing 3/8” product. The remaining material consists of run-of-mine (ROM) from off loads of re-mined waste rock stockpiles. Metallurgical testing of the ore indicates low variability in geologic properties and high variability of both Ag and Au extraction rates for the various particle size distributions. Historically the valley fill configuration provided metal forecasting challenges that could not be predicted as the leach pads grew. Forecasting metal production and leach optimization of the Stage III pad became challenging due to the extreme variation in heap leach pad depth, application of available barren leach solution and the variability of Ag and Au extraction rates for the various ore particle size distributions. To assist with understanding and optimizing metal production forecasting with these factors for the Stage III pad, Hatch developed a spatially-discretized heap leach simulation model using GoldsimTM dynamic simulation software. The model incorporates metallurgical data such as mine planning (tonnages and grade), particle size distribution, ore crushing, ore stacking plan, pad geometry, and both leaching dynamics and kinetics to forecast metal production from a consolidated mine plan."

"This paper presents a case history of drilled pier construction for a new stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The stadium structure is supported on several different foundation types, with the heaviest ""mega columns"" typically bearing on drilled pier supported mats. The project includes 141 drilled piers with design diameters of 5.5, 6 and 6.5 feet. The piers bear on bedrock at depths of 20 to 110 feet below the ground surface. Many of the piers included rock sockets with design lengths of 5 to 18 feet. A pre-production drilled pier load test program was completed including one Statnamic load test, two Osterberg Cell tests and two lateral load tests. Non-destructive testing (crosshole sonic logging and sonic integrity testing) were also performed during construction. Production pier installation with over 3800 linear feet of earth excavation and over 1350 linear feet of rock excavation was completed in a little over four months. The piers were installed using both the cased hole method and the slurry method. All cased holed required downhole inspection and slurry holes were initially inspected with a mini-SID device and subsequently by sounding. Advanced drilling equipment and tooling were used to meet the production requirements for the project. This paper reviews the highly variable soil and rock conditions encountered at the site, briefly presents the results of the load tests, and discusses pier installation procedures and the equipment used for installation. The paper also presents conclusions related to the installation and lessons learned.INTRODUCTIONWith the opening of AT&T Stadium in Dallas, a new era of stadium construction began in the U.S. The new age stadiums are larger and have more amenities than their predecessors. The new Atlanta Falcons stadium is no exception. Many of the new features, including Atlanta’s innovative retractable roof, result in extraordinary structural loads. The roof structure is supported by a series of mega columns that bear on eight large caps, six of which are drilled pier supported. Each of the pier caps contains between 8 and 16 drilled piers that bear in the underlying bedrock. The design pier diameters are 6 and 6.5 feet. Augercast piles were used to support two of the mega column caps. Drilled piers, augercast piles, aggregate piers and spread footings are used to support the more lightly loaded portions of the structure."

"There is abundant rare-earth element(REE) in our country, but it is very fragmented in the earth's crust, and it is very difficult to mining or mining cost is extremely high. There are few of industrial value rare-earth deposits. There is a lot of concomitant rare-earth deposits, and the comprehensive utilization value is high. There is very rich carlin-type gold resource, associated with a certain amount of REE in the southwest of Guizhou province. In order toutilize comprehensively the resources, this paper conducts the study on the occurrence characteristics of REE in the ore. By the chemical analysis, the gold grade is 3.35g/t, the organic carbon 0.81%, the total REE 0.022%, which is a high carbon fine disseminated gold ore. By the optical microscope and XRD analysis, the major minerals are quartz, pyrite, calcite, limonite, arsenopyrite, mica, kaolinite, clay minerals, etc. In addition, there is a large amount of carbonaceous materials, such as organic carbon, graphite, which is harmful on leaching of gold. By the scanning electron microscopy analysis, there are thorium, lanthanum and neodymium, ytterbium, persimmon and other REE in the ore. Gravity separation shows that REE could be enriched to lighter material mainly, which indicates that REE disseminate closely with lighter materials.INTRODUCTION Carlin-type gold ore is important gold resource in the world, which are mainly distributed in Nevada and its vicinity, as well as the two Golden Triangle of Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi and Sichuan, Shanxi, Gansu province in China(Su W.C. et al.,2009; Xia G.X.,1996).Guizhou carlin-type gold ore is the second largest gold resource in the world(Muntean J L et al.,2011), distributing along the southwestern margin of the Yangtze plate, mainly mineralizing in the neopaleozoic-early mesozoic(Xie Z J et al.,2017). Many large gold deposits have been found in southwest in Guizhou in twentieth century, such as Zimuyou,Getang, Lannigou, Shuiyindong and Laowanchang gold deposit, and so on, and the gold reserves reach over 100 tons(Xia Y. et al.,2009).There is a certain amount of rare-earth resource in the carlin-type gold ore in the southwest in Guizhou province, and the current researches might mainly focus on characteristics of REE from the angle of geological mineralization(AnanyevY.,2015), not from the angle of separation and enrichment."

It is true that there are hazards inherent in mining, but it is believed that most of them, at least, can be guarded against. Moreover, many man-made hazards can be eliminated by officials and workers adopting safer practices. Notwithstanding the hazards in coal mining, the fatal accident rate in the United States has improved. During the, period from 1911, to 1941, inclusive, the fatal accident rate varied from 5.35 to 2.22 per million tons of coal. With many handicaps during the war period, 1942-45, such as the lack of experienced manpower. and the, employment of untrained men, the increased average age of workers, and the shortage of equipment and supplies, the industry s ill further reduced its accident rate, so that it ranged from 2.30 to 1.724/ deaths per millon tons of coal. During 1944, 684,000,000 tons of coal was produced with a rate of 1.91, and during 1945, 631,000,000 tons was produced with a rate of 1.724/ deaths per millon tons of coal. The accident rate for 1945 was the lowest for the industry since records have been compiled.

The Bureau of Mines is currently developing methods for reclaiming the metal and mineral values contained in unburned urban refuse. One important phase of this research deals with recovering Mastic from shredded refuse using in electrodynamic separation process. The results of this study have indicated that mixed plastic concentrates analyzing 99.4 percent plastic can be consistently recovered from the light material fraction of shredded refuse, leaving a mixed paper traction analyzing 99.9 percent paper. Recovery of the plastic exceeds 99 percent.

In recent years the copper industry has gained considerable economic stability. An essential part of this industrial wealth is attributable to the successful application of bio-mediated heap and dump leaching techniques in the recovery of copper from low-grade resources. This study evaluated the leachability of a chalcopyrite conlentrate using naturally occurring mixed culture of predominantly Thiobacillusferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans. For the effects-of pulp density, the overall reaction rate constant (k) and the order of reaction (n) have been determined to be 1.93 h-1 and 1.36, respectively. Cyclic voltammetric measurements revealed that intermediate reactions are involved in the chalcopyrite oxidation. Using the Price approach, it was shown that the dissolution of chalcopyrite is solid state diffusion controlled.
