The presence of clay adversely affects the floatability of copper and molybdenum during processing porphyry copper/molybdenum ores. In addition, reagent consumptions are much higher than when treating clay-free ores. Ores containing kaoline, brammollite, illite and montmorillonite were examined in the laboratory to determine how clay minerals affect the floatability of copper and molybdenum, and to find a possible solution to alleviate the harmful effect of clay slimes. It was demonstrated that the presence of clay mostly affects floatability of coarse and middling particles, and reduces selectivity. The results of the research work showed that there may be several possible ways of reducing the detrimental affects of clay slimes on flotation, some of which include a) use of alternative flowsheets, b) flotation at reduced pulp density, and c) the use of special frothers. The applicability of the findings in plant practice are discussed.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the development of a pyrometallurgical process for the recovery of the zinc and lead contained in brass smelter flue dusts, which constitute a recycling or disposal problem. Tests on brass flue dust from several sources were made in a quartz tube, heated by an electric furnace to temperatures as high as 1,050° C. The dusts were mixed with carbon and heated in an oxygen-free atmosphere. It was demonstrated that 98 pct of the zinc and 12 to 25 pct of the lead, both in the metallic state, could readily be removed from the dusts. It was also found that 75 pct of the zinc could be recovered, with less than 0.1 pct of the lead, in the absence of chlorides. Pelletization techniques were investigated and 0.6 inch pellets were found to be optimal. Pelletizing results in a tenfold reduction in volume.

Avoid accidents that can occur when applying belt dressing from an aerosol can, particularly when can pressure has dropped or when spraying against wind. Approach Use a garde-type sprayer. How It Works Commercially available garden-type sprayers can be used for applying conveyor belt dressing from 12 feet away, or more. Pressure is easily raised and maintained at about 50 psi. Most sprayers have a hand pump, but a battery-powered cordless model is also available. Garden-type sprayers are available in various sizes from 11/2 to 18 gallons, with the larger models wheel mounted. The 3-gallon model evaluated by the Bureau has a shoulder carrying strap, which gives additional safety advantages. Use of the strap frees both hands for climbing ladders or holding onto catwalk rails. When spraying, one hand can remain on a handhold to lessen the chances of touching a moving belt.

A powerful methane explosion in the mid-shaft pump station of a main service and ventilation shaft killed several persons on the station; more workers were killed when a mancage travelling down the shaft fell to the shaft bottom under a pile of broken concrete slabs from a brattice wall destroyed by the explosion venting into the shaft and a tangled mass of twisted steelwork from the equipped compartment. The newly-commissioned shaft serves a recent extension of an established mine on the Orange Free State (OFS) goldfield in South Africa. After outlining the circumstances in which the paper was written, and reviewing the nature and extent of the methane hazard in OFS mines, the paper describes the physical layout of the shaft and summarises evidence given by witnesses at the official inquiry concerning events prior to the explosion. No attempt is made to apportion blame for the incident.

In-stope backfill will cure under effective stress, which develops due to a combination of mechanical consolidation (free draining material) and ??chemical consolidation?? (self-desiccation mechanism). A good knowledge of all the drainage and consolidation characteristics of cemented paste backfill is crucial for a better design of underground backfilling sequencing. From many of the existing results and studies done by various authors, as well as the availability of some in-stope backfill pressure data measurements during and after filling, it is possible of developing a procedure of backfilling sequencing. Hence, the objective of this study is to provide a guide for underground backfilling sequencing in the view of preventing the development of excess pore pressure that will affect both the stability of the barricades and the strength development of the backfill. This will be possible by considering the interaction between consolidation/drainage rate, filling rate and binder hydration rate.

The use of rubber-tyred equipment in a decline mining system requires that roadways be kept free of running water. At Renison this is achieved by the use of stage pumping or gravitating to a major pump station and pumping from there directly to the surface. The frequent use of pick-up lines and pump boxes in the decline system provides a method of water control and reduces the amount of slimes in pump lines. The Bassett Fault structure, which lies on the hangingwall of the mine is the major source of ground water. This is encountered in diamond drill holes and exploration develop- ment. Dewatering of this structure is possible by controlling the flow from selected holes. Future pumping requirements may be predicted by analysing changes in the level of the water table and by calculating dewatering rates required to maintain ore reserves available for production.

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Upper Free-port coalbed was studied in Fayette County, Pa., where this coalbed lies about 650 feet below the Pittsburgh coalbed and contains the largest remaining reserves of any coalbed in the county. Its estimated recoverable reserves in Fayette County are between 670 and 800 million tons. Coal and overburden isopachs, structure and joint pattern maps, and a fence diagram were prepared using data from gas and oil exploration logs and coal outcrops. These maps will aid in determining the need and/or feasibility of degasifying the Upper Freeport coalbed in the study area. Much of the coalbed in this area is under 600 to 1,400 feet of overburden. By correlation with data from the Pittsburgh coalbed, the gas content at depths of this order is estimated to be between 140 to 300 cf/ton of coal.

How It Works A drill-split fragmentation machine that combines a drill and a unique splitter has been developed. The drill and splitter are mounted on a carriage that positions the splitter in a hole immediately after it is made by the drill. The splitter creates force loads that cause the rock to fragment, and the process is repeated for excavation. The unique splitter applies both radial and axial loads to the rock mass, which produces an excavation action comparable to pulling a plug. This excavation action distinguishes the radial-axial splitter from typical demolition splitters, which require a free surface parallel to the axis of the splitter toward which to break rock.

The Na-feldspar orebodies in Sardinia occur along structures belonging to a regional ENE-WSW system that developed during the late stages of the Hercynian orogeny, and that was reactived during the Alpine orogeny. The main petrographic facies include granitoids, albitized granitoids, albitites (more or less rich in quartz), and albitites containing Mg minerals. Field observations and petrological and geochemical data point toward a metasomatic origin for the albitite orebodies. Albitization involved depletion of K from K-feldspar and biotite, dissolution of free quartz, and a lowering of Sr/Na2O and CaO/Na2O ratios in the protolith, under conditions of a positive thermal gradient. The absence of later K-metasomatism implies that, during a subsequent decline in temperature, the composition of the albitizing fuids was modified by an influx of meteoric or other waters. "Sulphide ores under certain circumstances will react with explosives to generate an autocatalytic chemical reaction. This reaction is exothermic and results in the production of large volumes of poisonous gases and creates an unsafe, unstable condition with the possibility of a low energy deflagration or even a detonation of the loaded hole. This paper outlines the conditions that need to exist for such a reaction to take place and the precautions necessary to minimize or eliminate the problem in areas of reactive ore. A special case study involving a northern Ontario mine will be detailed.IntroductionOne of North America's leading underground gold producer's processes over 6500 tonnes of ore per day from an orebody containing high concentrations of sulphides. The methods used by the Anglo American Corporation for analysis of long-term metal markets and prices are described. The principal factors affecting the relationships between production costs and metal prices are analysed. These are firstly the type of market, - speculative or consumer commodity, free market or subject to price control; and secondly the rate of growth of demand for the metal. It is shown that virtually all metals will have relatively low rates of demand growth for the foreseeable future, due to market saturation, increased economisation, substitution and product obsolescence. Metal prices have a clear dependance on production costs, however forecasting future costs is by no means simple; amongst other things, account must be taken of changing exchange rates, inflation rates, and the potential for operating more efficiently. The paper concludes by giving brief assessments of the long-term future for aluminium, copper, zinc, nickel and tin.

Secondary or boulders blasting is a regular feature of quarrying operations in Pakistan, especially in cement and stone crushing industries. The main reason for secondary blasting is the production of a large number of boulders during the production blast. These boulders are larger than the feed hopper of crushers and require further breaking. The complex geometry of boulders, relative lack of restraining burdens, and the availability of number of free faces make this kind of blasting more hazardous than production blasting. Secondary blasts have generally unpredictable results and may cause flyrock, airblast, and over-crushing of rock material. Thus, it is essential to have an appropriate amount of explosive charge/powder factor, and for it to be properly distributed in the blast hole. The greater the amount of explosive over the required amount, the more violent is the blast, which will result in more flyrock, airblast, and excessive crushing of boulders.

The primary objective of this paper is to discuss the hazards and furnish a list of recommendations for the safe operation of quarries and related works. They have been compiled from Bureau of Mines publications covering the safety experience of engineers before and during the year in the mineral industry,5 from a publication of the National Safety Council, Inc.,6 from explosives recommendations made by various explosives manufacturers,7 and from suggestions obtained from quarries visited. The second objective is to describe and illustrate safety devices, practices, and quarrying methods. The quarrying and related industries of the United States had a lower accident-frequency rate than either the metal- or coal-mining industry as reported for 1942.8 However, the quarry industry ranked eleventh in 15 major industries during 1942 in lost-time accident fre¬quency; metal mining ranked fourteenth and coal mining fifteenth.

In a search for improved methods of upgrading tar obtained by low-temperature carbonization of coal, monoethanolamine (MEA) was found to be effective in extracting tar acids from coal tar distillates derived from a subbitunwous and a lignite coal. Patch extractions showed that both yield and purity of the extracted acids improved with increasing volume ratios of monoethanolamine to tar acid, varied from 1:4 to 8:1. Yield improved, but purity decreased as the concentration of monoethanolamine was changed from 30 to 70 volume-percent, and as the concentration of tar acid in distillate was increased ad from 14 to 45 percent. In a continuous countercurrent extraction employing a double solvent (monoethanolamine and hexane) approximately 80 percent of the tar acids was extracted from 170° to 350° C. tar distillate when using 1.6:1 volume ratios of amine:tar acids. Tar acids isolated from his extract, although of improved purity, contained appreciable quantities of neutral oils and some tar bases. Aqueous monoethanolamine was not effective for extracting the last 10 to 15 percent of tar acids in 170° to 350° C. distillate oil from lignite coal. The highest yield of isolated tar acids and the best recovery of monoethanolamine were obtained by diluting the extract with water and saturating with C02. Some losses of solvent were encountered when aqueous monoethanolamine solutions were heated through decomposition of the amine with the liberation of ammonia.

Experimental work was performed using a bench scale autoclave to evaluate the effects that leaching temperature, pressure, initial acid concentration, and the solid to liquid ratio have on the behaviour of base metals and platinum group metals in a high-pressure sulphuric acid oxygen leaching system. The concentrations of metals in the leach solution were measured over time at different leaching conditions. At the conditions investigated, the initial acid concentration had the largest influence on the copper leaching kinetics, while the leaching rates of the other precious metals (OPMs: rhodium, ruthenium, and iridium) were highly dependent on the leaching temperature. A set of chemical reactions that can be used to describe the leaching chemistry was proposed, and the associated reaction kinetics were quantified. As a first estimation, the rate expressions were considered first order, and the rate constants were determined using the method of least squares, considering the experimental and predicted concentrations obtained for the different leaching conditions. Of the OPM compounds, the sulphides showed the fastest dissolution rate, followed by OPM alloys, and finally the OPM oxides. During the initial leaching stages, base metals and OPMs competed for the available dissolved oxygen, with oxygen being preferentially used for copper leaching. Precipitation of OPMs during the initial leaching stages can be ascribed to copper and nickel dissolution according to exchange reactions between dissolved OPMs and copper present as digenite or nickel present as polydymite. Control of the autoclave residence time is of particular importance to enhance the selectivity of this leaching step, given the dependence of the PGM leaching rates on the extent of copper dissolution.

"In recent years, developers have had to deal with complexities associated with numerous cases of deep basement construction in built-up areas. Design and construction of deep excavation support systems in urbanised zones come with many technical challenges. Restricted working spaces often render the use of temporary struts as wall restraint systems unpopular, as working space needs to be maximised. Also, tie-back anchors are often inapplicable due to the existence of adjacent structures. Therefore, developing alternative restraint systems for deep basement structures in builtup areas is becoming increasingly important to the present day basement engineer.This paper is centred on the design, construction and monitoring of enabling works for deep basement structures on three sites in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Traditional tieback anchorage and propping systems were inapplicable on the sites. As alternatives, separate novel wall restraint systems were developed and adopted, to enable excavation on each of the three sites.Performances of the novel wall restraint systems, as well as the responses of adjacent structures were monitored. Numerical modelling and field monitoring results show the three alternative wall restraint systems to be safe and effective. The paper also highlights the advantages of the novel solutions over conventional methods.INTRODUCTIONRecently, deep basement structures have become popular components of urban building developments. As pointed out by Pearlman et al., 2004, this could be attributed to the inadequacy of surface parking spaces in urbanised zones, while underground parking facilities are also believed to improve both aesthetic and commercial qualities of urban structures.However, while the incorporation of basement structure into new urban development appeals to developers and architects, the engineering design and construction aspects of basement works typically come against a whole lot of complexities and challenges. As highlighted by Wong, 2002, engineering problems associated with basement construction in built-up areas are numerous, some of these include; complicated sub-soil conditions, dealing with excessive active pressures, complex temporary works, proximity of sensitive adjacent structures, high level hazards to construction workmen and surrounding community, inadequate working space, etc."

The Pittsburgh Experiment Station has made a survey of the properties and characteristics of the brands of fuse manufactured in the United States ; 25 samples were procured from 4 manufacturers representing the different brands offered on the market when the investigation was begun . It is believed that the field was completely covered except for special fuse made to order for a particular job .
