(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) I. INTRODUCTION. THE experiments herein. described were carried on in 1908-9 . by the State Geological Survey of Kansas. Some months before taking up work on black powder the Survey had resumed work on an interrupted investigation of explosions in coal-mines, a subject which is engaging the attention. of numerous investigators. An unusual number of serious disasters has directed to. the subject a study which discloses the disquieting fact that, in the. United States, the ratio of lives lost per ton of coal mined has been on the increase. Methods of coal-mining have changed to some extent with the great increase of output, attained in, comparatively recent years. These changes involve the working of very extensive mines, with increased difficulty of ventilation, increased accumulation of coal-dust, and. a very great increase in the amount of explosive used.. . This last point assumes truly startling proportions when it is carefully observed. In the fields of the Middle. West it is not now uncommon for a miner to use six ,kegs (150 lb.) of black powder in a "pay" of two weeks, while within the memory. of men still active, one keg (25 .lb.) would last two men for a " pay." So. great has . the use of explosives become in some fields that the skilled coal-miner is hard to find, and the coal is not mined, but blasted. An intensive investigation into modern roof support technology, including hy draulic and control systems, has been carried out against the perspective of global development and support behaviour on longwall faces across the Indian sub-continent. The wide ranging study examined various types and designs of modern supports used in seams of varying thickness and inclination where caving and stowing were practised. Consideration has been given to structural analysis, support resistance, the various forces acting over and on the powered supports and to support compatibility. The examination of the phy sical parameters has been allied to field experience and, together, have led to the formulation of standard designs for both the powered support structure and structural systems. A realistic mathematical model has been formulated for calculating the capacity of roof support requirements resulting from the actual behaviour of the immediate roof stratum. As a result of the work, it should be possible to readily select the most appropriate type of support sy stem for the conditions and longwall mining method that is to be employed.

CERTAINLY in point of attendance, and doubtless in several other ways as well, the 147th meeting of the A.I.M.E. was the best ever held. In times of depression, mining engineers and metallurgists have plenty of time to come to the Annual Meeting but money is scarce; at the height of industrial activity they have plenty of money but no time. "The current period of transition seemed to provide ideal conditions for' both the preparation of papers and attendance at their presentation. The weather made even the Californians present envious though the weather man gets no credit, for rain and snow was what he willed. Among the elevator men, the miners have the reputation of being the toughest crowd to handle, though the best natured, withal, of all the engineering groups that meet in the Engineering Societies Building. PETROLEUM'S importance in World War II can perhaps be better realized by the recitation of a few facts and figures: Gasoline needs in this war are already eighty times greater than in the last war. It takes nearly three pounds of gasoline to deliver one pound of bombs, filled with petroleum explosives, on an enemy objective. Every American soldier overseas requires an average of more than fifty gallons of petroleum products per week, with the oil used by Navy and supply ships and America's Allies boosting the consumption of oil per soldier to an even higher figure. Every oil well in the United States now must produce each day an average of four barrels of oil for war and combat jobs. More than fifty million gallons of gasoline, fuel oils, lubricants, and other petroleum products are now going directly to the fighting forces every day.

ALTHOUGH Greater New York does not bear any resemblance to a great mining district, the mining operations that are being conducted in and about the city are both extensive and interesting in character. With regard to the extent, it may be mentioned that, at. present, there is more dynamite used in New York than in any mining district in the United States; that there are under construction about 38 miles of tunnel, and that 66 miles more are projected, most of which must be constructed in the near future ; that since 1902 at least 2,000,000 tons of earth has been removed in underground work, in addition to about 3,500,000 tons that has been removed in, open-cut in connection with tunnel-work, and many times this quantity that has been removed in excavating foundations for buildings not connected with tunnel-work; and that there are to-day probably more than 5,000 men engaged in mining-work in and about New York City. These undertakings include almost every operation connected with underground work, from exploration by means of trench and boring, to the sinking of large shafts and the driving of large tunnels through every kind of ground from hard rock to soft, semi-fluid silt and quicksand. It is proposed in this paper to give a general description of some of the methods and appliances used in the opening-up ,of a "mine" in a large city, and a brief description of some of the "mines" now being developed in New York, connecting as far as possible the methods described with the particular work for which they were designed, in order to give a general idea of the

I. INTRODUCTORY. Lake Valley, New Mexico, has long been one of the most widely known mining districts of southwestern United States. For many years its silver-mines have been among the most famous of the country, visited by many mining men and geologists; yet little information regarding the origin of the ore-deposits and the influencing geologic conditions has found its way into print. With the recent revival of public attention, after a decade and a half of utter stagnation, to the mining of silver in the Southwest, special interest attaches to the genesis and geologic disposition of the ore-bodies which are so finely open to inspection in the Lake Valley district. Moreover, the local features here described are typical of the conditions existing over a much larger field. The fact that the ores are chiefly the chloride and the chloro-bromide of silver adds further interest. Data bearing upon the genesis of haloid ore-deposits are, at the present time, very much sought. Arid regions offer particularly favorable conditions for the formation of such ores. This New Mexican district appears to supply solutions to many problems concerning this class of ores, which have long vexed the student of ore-deposits. II. LOCATION AND HISTORY. The town of Lake Valley is situated in Sierra county, in the southwestern part of New Mexico, and 100 miles northwest of El Paso, as the crow flies.From a mining standpoint, the location of the place is itself suggestive, as it lies on the southeastern slope of the great quaquaversal arch of the Colorado plateau. The center of this vast dome is in north-central Arizona, and radii about 150 miles in length reach its foot in all directions. Around its basal margins runs the broad mineralized belt containing most of the great mines of the Southwest, which extends from south-central Colorado southward and southwestward through New Mexico, thence westward through Arizona, northwestward and northward through southeastern California and western Nevada, and, finally, eastward through Nevada and Utah into Colorado again. This great mineralized belt is important as geographically limiting profitable mining over the greater part of five States.

High-purity quartz (SiO2) is an important material widely used in many industries, including semiconductor technology, telecommunication, and optics. The content and distribution of impurities in quartz significantly affect the processing methods. This paper provides an insightful review on the processing of high-purity quartz, covering the analytical techniques, separation methods, and the critical procedures used to assess the quality of quartz ore. More importantly, the critical review of the thermal phase transition separation method for fine-grained mineral inclusions, micron-grade fluid inclusions, and lattice-bound trace elements is notably opened for the first time. It is proposed that the research field as a monopolized industry would benefit by expounding the critical problems that occur during the preparation of high-purity quartz.

A new methodology is proposed for the preliminary assessment of coal blend quality, which combines gamma-ray spectrometry and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This methodology does not replacethe conventional methods of assessing coal quality, but can help to control the quality of the coal blending process, as well as reduce the amount of proximate analysis required and the determinations of calorific value and total sulphur. The methodology includes five steps. First, both geophysical measurements aremade with handheld equipment. The samples with magnetic susceptibility ≤ 1 × 10-3 SI are then separated. From these samples, those with total gamma intensity ≤ 20 nGy/h are separated. These samples have a higher calorific value and lower ash and moisture content. To separate the samples of better quality and with lower total sulphur content, in step four the samples with total gamma intensity > 20 nGy/h are separated from those with magnetic susceptibility ≤ 1 × 10-3 SI. This last group includes samplesthat will cause less total sulphur-related environmental pollution. In the final step, the quality of both radioactive sample groups is corroborated from the calorific value measurement and ash, moisture, andtotal sulphur contents in at least 10% of all coal blend samples from both groups. In this study, more than1000 samples were analysed with this new methodology, and the results are remarkably similar to the ASTM classification of the Sabinas Basin coals.

In the field of pyrometallurgy, the presence of multiple molten phases with distinct chemical compositions, such as slags, mattes, speiss liquids, metals and molten salts, is a well-known phenomenon. These phases exhibit strongly non-ideal solution behaviour and are mutually miscible to varying degrees. To describe these complex molten liquids, the Modified Quasichemical Model (MQM) has proven effective and has been applied to numerous binary, ternary and several higher-order multicomponent systems related to pyrometallurgy. In recent decades, the complexity of high-temperature processes has escalated due to increased impurity concentrations in primary ores, the incorporation of recycled consumer products and the integration of metallurgical plants through by-product and waste exchanges. To address these issues, PYROSEARCH laboratory has been developing large 20-component thermodynamic database using a generalised CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) methodology integrated with experimental investigations. Over the past decade, strategic decisions were made balancing the ability to generate experimental data, prediction power, accuracy, stability of calculations, as well as computational time, which are discussed in the paper. Examples provided for issues of >3 liquid immiscibility, non-ionic behaviour and exaggerated ‘sharp’ enthalpies of mixing in silicate slags, dealing with multiple oxidation states, as well as comparative analysis of pair and quadruplet approximation in MQM.

This research focuses on the strata control issues in a Bord and Pillar depillaring working under the influence of dead load condition of voluminous and fragmented softcover of overburden dump material. It reports the modeling of a mine working through the FLAC 2D software under the Indian geo-mining conditions. The modeling results of an actual mine working under softcover were compared with that under the intact overburden condition to assess the influence of the soft overburden over the depillaring working. The modeling work involved progressive caving of the strata and the cyclic goaf filling following the modelsimulated occurrence of main fall and periodic caving. Mohr-Coulomb Failure criteria along with a simplified strain-softening (MCSS) model was used to study the failure and caving mechanism. Salamon’s compaction model was used to simulate compaction and resultant stress recovery in the goaf material. Comparison of the model findings was done in terms of load on supports, abutment stress, and convergence, apart from the stress redistribution and failure mechanism. The load transfer mechanism of the soft overburden was also studied for an overall understanding of the strata behavior in such workings.

(communication to the Secretary*): The hold experiment of Mr. James Gayley in drying the blast used in the Isabella furnace has attracted the attention of the whole metallurgical world, and has given rise to a wide discussion of the reasons for its great success. Mr. Gayley and the capitalists who backed him in his work deserve congratulations on the success of the venture, not only because it succeeded, but because they have been rewarded far beyond the maximum that could be expected from theory or probability. To state the case in its simplest terms, all that could have been predicted was: (1) that the removal of the moisture from the blaet would result in the saving of the heat required for its decomposition, representing from 3 to 5 per cent. of the heat-value of the coke used; hence about that quantity of fuel might be saved; (2) that the furnace would be somewhat more independent of variations in the weather; (3) that the campaign would be a little hotter; and (4) that the speed of the blowing-eugines would be decreased, at least in amount proportionate to the reduction in temperature of the air led to them. I do not think anyone anticipated a much larger output per day. The results actually attained were: (1) the furnace made an increase of 24.86 per cent. in the output of pig-iron per day; (2) it consumed 19.6 per cent. less coke per ton of pig-iron made; (3) the blowing-engines were run 15.8 per cent. slower; and (4) the saving in power made up for the power required to run the refrigerating-plant. Flotation practice in Idaho is now about 13 years old. The advance has been steady during these 113 years. The operators have been alert to take advantage of the newest developments and they have themselves made a constant effort to improve their work. The metallurgical improvements are due to the development of (1) better equipment, (2) better reagents, and (3) better understanding and control of the process. During the eight years the writer has been in this district, there has been continuous experimentation by several companies to improve the ore dressing by flotation methods. Gravity concentration has fought hard to hold its place, and although it is true that gravity processes have been improved during this period, nevertheless, in several of the important mills of the district the few tables that managed to hang on have finally given way. On the straight-lead ores, tables and jigs are still used; and, due to better classification, their hold on this job has been strengthened. Ores of the District The ores of the district are of two general classes: (1) clean lead ores, such as those from the Bunker Hill and Hecla mines, and (2) complex lead-zinc ores. The general impression prevails that the clean lead ores, class 1, are simple and that it is easy to obtain high recoveries and good grade products. This, in a way, is a false impression; there is quite a high percentage of locked middling in these ores at 100 and' 150-mesh sizes. Improved classification preparatory to table treatment of this type of ore has made it possible to segregate effectively a high-grade middling which is further comminuted and floated. The complex lead-zinc ores of the district, of which the ore from the Morning mine of the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. is a typical example, always have presented a difficult problem. It always has been comparatively easy to make a clean lead concentrate, but it never has been possible to concentrate sphalerite with a specific gravity of 4.10 from siderite of gravity 3.88. W. L. SaundeRs, New York City (communication to the Secretary*):—Notwithstanding the sweeping statements made by Mr. Clarke in this paper, the friends of compressed air are not dismayed. There is no war between electricity and compressed air. Each one has its field of usefulness, and in that field each is supreme. In spite of commercial interests, in spite of prejudices and the enthusiasm of the inventor, the thing that is best will survive and flourish. At least ten years ago, our engineering papers contained large advertisements and pages of reading-matter about the application of electricity to mines, recording the introduction of numerous rock-drilling plants, and claiming that the problem had been solved, greatly to the advantage of the miner and with promise of large profits to the manufacturers of electrical apparatus. Edison and Thomson labored to apply electricity to mines, and each believed that the probabilities of success were great. This was the period of the solelloid rock-drill, which mas admirably suited, theoretically, to the percussive principle and in the development of which hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent without satisfactory result. I have searched in vain for a standard mining equipment where electric rock-drills are in constant, commercial operation. During a recent trip made from New York to California, I visited most of the important mines of the West and failed to discover a single electric equipment, so far as this class of mining-work is concerned. If any one will inform me where there exists today an electric-drilling equipment in constant service in mines in the United States, I shall be glad to receive the information. This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Although direct examinations of the gob atmosphere are difficult due to the inaccessibility of these gobs, evidence from methane drainage practices and investigations of numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners. Most recently, this was demonstrated in the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe.

Pyrite (FeS2), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS) and galena (PbS) generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) when placed in water, with pyrite generating the most amount of H2O2. The order of these minerals for generating H2O2 in water is: pyrite > chalcopyrite > sphalerite > galena. In previous research, the methods of generation of H2O2 in the grinding mill were studied. In this study, data from experiments were included by using MODDE 9 software for six parameters composed of water, grinding media, particle size; adding collector to the grinding, and adding depressant and pH. Finally the optimal condition was achieved. According to the results, most of the recovery is related to the particle 75 μ size and when using processed water, adding 100% collector and without depressant and pH 10. The most recovery of lead in the case of the use of fresh water is in the case of 100% collector, without depressant, pH 10 and 150 μ particle size. Maximum recovery in fraction size 45 μ in the case of water process is 100% collector, without depressant and pH 10. Maximum depressant of pyrite will be the fraction size 75 μ, distilled water, without collector, 100 depressant. Keywords: Sulfide mineral, hydrogen peroxide, flotation, oxidation

Recent advances in ruggedised industrial control system technology and architecture in combination with latest technologies in the fast-evolving 3D LiDAR sensor sector becoming available have enabled the implementation of sophisticated automation algorithms for mining equipment such as bucket wheel reclaimers, as published by the authors in the peer reviewed AusIMM 2019 Iron Ore conference proceedings. This paper provides an overview of a second use case for such automation technology in bulk material ports integral to iron ore operations. The real-time 3D machine-vision based port automation system described in this paper was originally developed for the BHP-Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Hay Point port. The system has seen deployment at other major mining and general ports in Australia, such as at Dalrymple Bay Terminal (DBT) (shown in Figure 1) managed by Dalrymple Bay Infrastructure Management (DBIM), Hay Point, Queensland. T HE 121st meeting of the Institute held in New York City, February 16 to 19, 1920, was a great success despite vicissitudes of weather of unusual severity. On account of tremendous snowstorms, only two members of the Canadian contingent arrived, and several of our members from the west arrived thirty hours late. Two weeks prior to the meeting, the heaviest snowstorm in 34 years wrecked the surface transportation in New York; and it was only by special dispensation that arrangements were effected, with the New York Street Cleaning Department to clear away 39th street in front of this building so that vehicles could reach the curb. The total registration of members and guests was 1138.

I. DESCRIPTION. MONAZITE is one of the minerals which, for a long time, was considered rather rare in its occurrence, but, upon a commercial demand arising for it, prospectors and engineers soon located large deposits of it in the Carolinas and Brazil, and the supply has always been able to meet the demand. During 1908 further sources of supply of monazite have been discovered and developed in Idaho. North and South Carolina, however, are the only States that have thus far put any monazite on the market. Monazite is essentially an anhydrous phosphate of the rare-earth metals, cerium, lanthanum, and didymium (Ce, La, Di)PO;. There is nearly always present a varying but small percentage of thoria, ThO2, and silicic acid, SiO, which are very probably united in the form of a thorium silicate, ThSiO4 Some monazites contain but a fraction of a per cent. of thoria, while others have been recorded that showed the presence of from 18 to 32 per cent. ; but the majority contain from 3 to 9 per cent. of this oxide. It is the presence of the thorium oxide that gives the monazite its commercial value. The analysis occasionally shows also the presence of other constituents, as the yttrium and erbium oxides, zirconia, alumina, magnesia, lime, iron oxides, manganese oxide, and titanium oxide. Monazite is light-yellow, honey-yellow, reddish-, brownish-, or greenish-yellow in color, with a resinous to vitreous luster, and is translucent to subtransparent. It is brittle, with a conchoidal to uneven fracture, and is from 5 to 5.5 in hardness, and from 4.64 to 5.3 in specific gravity.
