"The successful commercialization of a pressure oxidation (POX) process for recovering metal values, including gold, copper, zinc, nickel and molybdenum, is the result of a carefully planned development program. The initial task involves developing one or more conceptual flowsheets, including the POX autoclave and downstream purification and recovery steps. A laboratory program is completed to determine the technical viability of the flowsheets, define the operating parameters for each step and provide information for an initial economic assessment of the process. The process is then confirmed during a continuous pilot plant program, providing engineering design data and other information for the commercial design. A well-thought-out development program has been shown to be critical for reducing the risk of commercializing POX processes. Experiences developing POX processes for refractory gold ores and copper concentrates are briefly discussed. IntroductionPressure oxidation (POX) has become a common commercial operation for processing sulfide-bearing feedstocks. These feedstocks include gold ores and concentrates; copper concentrates; nickel concentrates and mattes; zinc concentrates; and molybdenum concentrates. Drivers for the development and commercialization of POX processes include:• The high cost for pyrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores, much of which is attributed to environmental controls.• The motivation to implement safe and more environmentally attractive alternatives for sulfide ores.• The need to process increasingly difficult ores with complex mineralogy.• Improvements made over the last 25 years in POX equipment design and experience operating commercial POX plants.Although the capital and operating costs for commercial POX processing can be high, this technology is capable of rapid oxidation of most sulfides and arsenic minerals in the feed, with little noxious gases and environmentally stable iron arsenate and other iron compounds in the POX residue (Marsden and House, 2006).In POX operations, sulfides are oxidized to either sulfates or elemental sulfur in an autoclave at elevated temperature and pressure with oxygen gas. Introduction In view of the fact that, during the past year, two Manitoba mines-Flin Fion and Sherritt Gordon-have entered the list of producers and have materially increased that Province's contribution to the metal production of the Dominion, it would seem appropriate at this time to review the progress of the industry in the Province, with particular reference to the out-standing metal-mining developments of the past decade. That these two mines have been able to continue their operations in spite of the low prices of copper and zinc adds a touch of brightness to the industrial life of the Province. Depression in metal prices is not encouraging to the mining industry, but it does stimulate efficiency in methods and costs of production. As two thriving towns have grown around the two mines, the will of the management to carry-on is of great consequence to Manitoba, this year so hard hit by the .agricultural depression. And, much as it is a pleasant feature in the mining situation that these mines have been able to continue operations, nevertheless it must be noted, in reviewing the mining developments of the past few years in Manitoba, that the Province was fortunate enough to profit by good times, in that an industry was established which gives evidence of permanency. In the metallic field, the section of Manitoba that first received attention from prospectors was the boundary district, west of the Lake of the Woods. Several claims were staked here at the time of the gold boom in the neighbouring Ontario area. But the first real interest in metalliferous deposits dates from the discovery of gold in March, 1911, in quartz veins on the shores of Rice lake, some twenty miles east of lake Winnipeg. Systematic and organized prospecting of the pre-Cambrian areas of the Province may be said to have commenced with that discovery. The first gold discovery in northern Manitoba was made at Wekusko (Herb) lake in 1914. This was followed by the discovery of the Flin Flan and Mandy copper ore-bodies in 1915 on Flin Fion and Schist lakes, respectively.

The production of rare earth elements from ore usually consists of three steps; the separation of a concentrate of REE bearing minerals; the cracking of the REE minerals to liberate the REE into an aqueous solution and separation of REE into individual elements. This paper describes the results of laboratory tests conducted on a carbonate-rich REE ore containing bastnaesite and monazite. The tests cover the whole processing sequence of beneficiation, preparation of the REE solution using a caustic leach followed by acid leach to break monazite and bastnaesite and liberate REE into an aqueous solution and the partial separation of the REE using solvent extraction. Details on the product quality and process performances (recovery and impurities removal) are given for each studied step. The paper also discusses the economic advantage of separating the REE rather than producing a mixed REO product to be sold to a refinery for REE separation. A mini-pilot plant version of the process is currently planned.

Introduction The property of Normetal Mining Corporation is in Desmeloizes township, Quebec, twelve miles north of Dupuy on the main line of the Canadian National railway from Quebec city co Cochrane, Ontario. The ore bodies occur within a band of highly sheared and sericitized agglomerate which strikes N.60°W. and clips 82° north. Along a zone 1,000 feet or more in length and of variable width, the agglomerate has been replaced by copper, zinc, and iron sulphides, with copper usually predominant on the hanging-wall side and pyrite replaced in part by sphalerite on the footwall. A northsouth diabase dyke cuts through the ore zone near its east end. The Normetal mill produces a copper concentrate and a zinc concentrate which are shipped, respectively, to Noranda, Que., and Newcastle, Penn., U.S.A., for further treatment. The present paper deals with the milling of ore from what is known as No. 3 orebody. This is a lenticular body of high-zinc ore lying co the east of the diabase dyke, along the line of strike of the main ore zone, which extends westward from the dyke. On its northern side, No. 3 orebody is in contact along most of its length with a narrow band of copper ore which is highly oxidized.

The probable inadequacy of physical tests of coke for the purposes for which they are made has been a subject for discussion for many years. However, little has been published in this connection, even though most workers in the field believe that the physical properties of coke are of major importance in its utilization in the steel and allied industries. In fact, the reproducibility of the recognized tests is largely unknown or can only be approximated. This situation occasions many difficulties when attempts are made to judge the coke-production qualities of various coals or coal blends. During World War II the Coke Production Committee, composed of representatives from industry and the Solid Fuels Administration, concluded that study of existing testing methods and possible improvements would be of material assistance in answering questions relating to coke quality. Since that time the Bureau of Mines has taken samples of coke produced in industrial slot-type coke ovens in connection with studies aimed at extending coking-coal reserves by adding to the list of sources known to be suitable for this purpose. Testing procedures on these cokes were arranged so that the data obtained would yield information on (1) the degree of precision of tests commonly used in the industry, (2) the causes of the known poor reproducibility in several of the physical tests, and (3) possible improvements or modifications of existing physical testing procedures.

ROES« is a proposed new mining system for underground hard rock mines. Ore is accessed from within a shaft, which is located close to or within the stope, and pitched either vertical or within approximately 20 degrees of vertical. The shaft is designed to exclude personnel entry so production drilling and explosive placement is done using remotely controlled or automated machines. Routine remotely controlled survey of the shaft, stope back and broken rock within the stope is typically done following each blast. The survey may include excavation geometry, rock fragmentation and geotechnical characteristics. Blastholes are surveyed before placement of explosives. This provides mine operators and engineers with real-time data, allowing them to monitor production performance and risk factors so that they can make rapid changes as required. ROES« is designed to apply to open stoping or sublevel caving situations either in disseminated, geologically defined, thick tabular or narrow vein orebodies. The technologies developed for ROES« will also have potential applications to block caving operations to reduce the risk of frozen ore and poor fragmentation. In a typical sublevel open stope application, ROES« will reduce the amount of stope-associated development by about half and therefore will allow ore to be brought on-stream sooner and at significantly reduced cost. Other savings are expected to flow from the centralisation of mining activities and operational data, reduction in mining fleet, reduction in ventilation requirements, improved occupational safety and reduced mine complexity. CSIRO and Orica Mining Services are developing the required technology and AMIRA is seeking sponsorship for a project to trial the mining method. This paper details the ROES« method, expected benefits and applications and includes typical stope and mining block designs and design requirements.

A modified transpiration apparatus was devised by the Bureau of Mines to permit rapid and accurate measure of the vapor transport and vapor diffusion coefficients of antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) and other compounds at temperatures to 1,045 K. The apparatus was equipped with dual condensers and valves to switch the flow of vapor in a fraction of a second from one condenser to the other, thus allowing short-interval sampling under equilibrium conditions. Reliability of the technique was established by measuring the vapor pressure of ZnC12 as a function of temperature and comparing the results with published data. As part of an investigation of the vapor concentrations and species of accessory element sulfides associated with copper and zinc smelting, the apparatus was used to measure the rate of vapor transport and diffusion coefficients of vapor over liquid Sb2S3 as a function of temperature between 870 and 1,045 K. The calculated vapor density was combined with published direct measurements of vapor pressure to calculate the average molecular weight of the gaseous species. Average molecular weight of the vapor in equilibrium with Sb2S3 ranged from 286 to 112 g/mol over the temperature range studied.

In fact, sulphur is so important that there has been an increasing tendency in recent years to measure industrial growth in terms of sulphur consumption.The uncertainty of obtaining adequate supplies •of elemental sulphur from the Frasch-mined domes. of Texas and Louisiana in the United States led all countries in 1950 to seek alternative sources of supply of this necessary element.Canadian industry has been supplied, for many years, with most of its sulphur requirements by United States Frasch-mined sulphur. World demand for this sulphur has necessitated the imposition of controls on its distribution, as production has not kept pace with demand. Until the third quarter of 1950, Canadian manufacturers of pulp and paper, heavy chemicals, explosives, and textiles •experienced little difficulty in obtaining their needs of elemental sulphur from the United States. However, at that time, low producers' stocks and declining reserves threatened to reduce shipments from producers, with the prospect of a continuing shortage for some time. These conditions, together with higher prices, stimulated the search for alternative sources of supply in Canada."

Many non-commercial operators are currently faced with the need to operate fleets of legacy gas turbine engines. How long such engines can be kept in service safely, without replacing a significant portion of their aging structural components, has become a growing concern to engine life-cycle managers, due to uncertainties in the remaining lives of critical components of these engines. This paper describes the application of the damage tolerance methodology to predict safe inspection intervals (SII) for critical components of gas turbine engines, using components of a turboprop engine for a transport aircraft as examples. High temperature components of this engine are made of advanced aerospace alloys. The methods of predicting three-dimensional fatigue crack growth at the critical location of turbine discs and spacers using both commercial and in-house developed algorithms are presented. Sensitivity analyses are performed to determine the effect of variations in material parameters on the predicted safe inspection intervals. In addition, spin rig tests performed for both turbine discs and spacers are described. Finally, crack growth rates predicted by numerical analyses are compared to those obtained from spin rig testing and the damage tolerance of the turbine components is assessed.

Dissolution of chalcopyrite with acidified ferric sulfate produces a sulfur layer on the unreacted chalcopyrite surface that interferes with further dissolution. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a process to improve the leaching kinetics of these types of diffusion-controlled systems. The system features the Bureau-developed turbomill, an attrition grinder that scrubs the reaction product coating away from the unreacted mineral grains during leaching. The system can be operated continuously at any temperature up to the boiling point of the leaching agent. This method is a hydrometallurgical alternative to chalcopyrite smelter technology and eliminates sulfur dioxide emission problems with its associated costs. Batch testing at 900 C with the chalcopyrite-ferric sulfate system resulted in copper extraction exceeding 99 pct. At an optimal energy consumption of 1,520 kW· hjst, 95 pct of the copper was extracted. The pregnant liquor was clarified and tested for typical solvent-extraction recovery of the copper. Two-stage extraction and two-stage stripping recovered 96 pct of the copper in an electrolyte suitable for copper electrowinning.

"To satisfy their continuing need to replenish or expand their ore reserves, mining companies are faced with the dilemma of arriving at a proper balance between the dual avenues of discovery through in-house exploration and of acquisition of properties that are relatively proven or are even in production. The returns from exploration activities may be spectacular, but are unpredictable. The allure of an acquisition lies in its promise of quick and risk-reduced addition to reserves. However, it is historically clear that quantum increments in shareholders’ values have arisen primarily through major exploration discoveries, rather than through major late-stage acquisitions. Late-stage acquisitions can prove highly profitable, sometimes based upon the planned use of superior mining or metallurgical technology, but more often occur as the result of unexpected windfalls. At the other extreme, they can become expensive failures through inadequate due diligence, or unforeseeable factors.Citing numerous case histories and industry statistics, it is concluded that a judicious combination of both exploration activity and the acquisition of prospects is the most advantageous strategy for adding new ore reserves. A skilled exploration staff is essential for success, be it through exploration discoveries or through opportunistic acquisitions, preferably at their early stages. In the future, it is anticipated that there will be fewer opportunities for acquisition because of reduced funding for junior exploration companies, leading to increased competition and higher costs for fewer properties, both in the advanced exploration and mining stages."

The Burgin shaft of Bear Creek Mining Co. near Eureka, Utah, was sunk during 1956 and 1957 as part of an exploratory program, searching for lead, zinc, copper, silver, and gold ore bodies hidden from the surface by several hundred feet of volcanic rocks. This paper describes the sinking methods and operating practices of Centennial Development Co., contracting firm for Bear Creek Mining Co., in sinking a 3-compartment vertical shaft 1,100 feet. The operation featured the Cryderman positive-action, clam-type shaft mucker. The shaft was completed in 142 days by a shaft crew of 10 men and a top force of 10 men, including supervision.

"Minerals, minerals, minerals. Elements occur in the earth as minerals. If local physical, chemical and structural conditions are conducive to concentrating these minerals to sufficiently high abundances in the earth’s crust, a mineral deposit will form. If technology is available to extract metals from the minerals economically, then you have a mineral resource that will be mined and processed. Determining which minerals are present and quantifying their abundances, textural characteristics (grain size and shape) and how they are intergrown with each other is the realm of the mineralogist. Geologists use this mineralogical data to understand how the mineral deposit formed, how to find high-grade zones within the deposit and where to find other mineral deposits. Metallurgists use this data to design, operate and optimise processing facilities to extract metals from the minerals. The types, quantity and precision/resolution of the mineralogical data required by geologists and metallurgists are different, but are not mutually exclusive of each other. ANALYSIS of 117 occurrences of bumps in coal mines shows that 67.6 percent are associated with pillar-line points.4 Slabbing and splitting pillars, development, and other unfavorable milling practices in abutment areas may be a contributory or the primary cause of bumps. The cure for pillar-line bumps is to recognize areas that can be expected to become highly stressed and to project the mining plan and operations to eliminate such areas insofar as possible. If such areas cannot be eliminated, then the mining plan and operations should be projected to avoid the necessity of disturbing these areas before the stresses have been dissipated.

Ductile hafnium was not obtained consistently by the conventional Kroll process. The bimetal reduction modification produced a more ductile hafnium by lowering the impurities, especially oxygen, in the sponge metal. Hafnium oxide was chlorinated in the presence of carbon to form anhydrous hafnium tetrachloride, which was reduced by sodium and magnesium in an inert atmosphere to produce sponge hafnium metal. After vacuum distillation to remove the byproducts, the sponge was arc-melted into ingot and rolled into strip. Metallic impurities were decreased by evaporating the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused salt. An excessive amount (over 1,200 parts per million (p.p.m.)) of aluminum was contained in some of the hafnium oxide, much of which remained as aluminum chloride in the hafnium tetrachloride during chlorination. Evaporation of the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused NaCI-KCI mixture during the Mg-Na reduction greatly lowered its aluminum content, as most of the aluminum and some of the other metallic impurities were retained by the fused salt.

Pressure welding is a solid state joining technique that depends on bringing the parts into sufficiently close contact that inter-atomic bonds are achieved. Pressing is more effective at elevated temperatures where plastic flow causes the asperities to collapse; improved application conditions are derived from hot-work research to clarify temperature and strain rate dependence of hot strength and ductility. The substructure evolution systematically studied in hot working to determine dynamic recovery or recrystallization is applied to clarifying that developed in welding. The various processes are affected differently by work-piece geometry and final shape requirements. In addition to pre-cleaning of the surfaces, the plastic flow helps disperse the remaining oxide layers as was originally exemplified in blacksmith hot forging of layered sword blades and in bellldie welding of wrought iron tubes. The presentation critically compares the utility for various materials and configurations of simple pressure, ultrasonic application, diffusion, explosive, rotary and linear friction and friction-stir processes. Diffusion bonding (primarily Ti) with light cleaning, low pressure, little distortion in protective furnace atmosphere contrasts strongly with the heavy upsetting in friction welding, or complex alloy mingling and substructure variations in friction stir joints.

During the fiscal year ended September 30, 1932, there were 27 fatalities in the coal mines of Indiana. Four of this number occurred in small mines employing less than 10 men, over which the State Inspection Department has no jurisdiction. In addition to these coal mine fatalities, an explosives accident in a clay mine resulted fatally to one man. Tables 1 and 2, which follow, list the fatalities as to cause and occupation. About mid-December 1936, the safety director of a large coal corporation visited the authors at the Bureau's Experimental coal mine to discuss a rock-dust barrier he had invented primarily for use in trackless entries of coal mines. The rock dust in this device was carried in its original paper containers and means were provided for ripping these open so that the dust might be scattered in the path of an explosion. The inventor termed the device a "bag barrier", and this term has been adopted in the present paper for convenience. At that time the device was in an early stage of development, and the inventor felt that the barrier should be tested to determine whether it had enough promise of being successful to justify further development. The matter was taken under consideration and finally three tests were made during the week of February 15, 1937. It was concluded that while the device did stop an explosion in two of the three tests, it was much loss effective than ordinary rock dusting, and that too few data were obtained to permit direct comparison with tests of other barriers. Apparently, the conditions under which the device could, be successful were somewhat limited, out the limits could not be defined without additional tests.

Initially, the objective of this contract was to develop a PWSCSR that could meet proposed criteria (that were different from 30 CFR 11(Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulation part II) and that would be less than twice the size and weight of a filter self rescuer. This objective was met. Consequently, the original contract was extended to develop a PWSCSR that would meet existing CFR-30 criteria within the same size and weight constraints. This resulted in the development of a PWSCSR (the SR-100) that received NIOSH/MSHA approval (TC-239). This report presents a historical discussion of the design and development of the SR-100 as developed by CSE Corporation under Bureau of Mines contract number H0368013. The technical parameters and the test results of NIOSH/MSHA 30 CFR 11 certification are also presented.

THE Falcon Lake stock is a small igneous mass, 2.6 square miles in area, which has intruded a belt of older lavas and metamorphosed sediments. It is well exposed and the entire area of its outcrop is taken up with surveyed mining claims, the claim lines forming a grid which makes ideal conditions for a detailed petrographical study of the unusual variations which are found in the composition of this unit (see Figure 1). The study of this mass, which has revealed features of both scientific and economic significance, began in the summer of 1939 when trainees in a Prospectors' Training Camp, a Do-minion-Provincial youth-training project under the writer's supervision, were, detailed to map rock outcrops on various mining claims. Microscopic study of rock specimens taken on a line across this stock were made during the following winter and proved to be of such interest that a special trip was made the following summer for the purpose of gathering more data, the results of which are presented here. Location The stock is close to the southeast corner of the province of Manitoba, about three miles from the Ontario boundary. It lies between Falcon and West Hawk lakes and less than a mile south of the Trans-Canada highway. It is easily accessible by motor car, as a branch road from the highway leads to the Sunbeam Kirkland gold mine, which is within the inner core of the stock. Previous Work This area was the first in the Province to receive attention from prospectors, who entered it from the adjacent Lake of the Woods district during the days of the mining boom in the 1890's. Small occurrences of gold, copper, molybdenum, and tungsten ores were found, but to date there has been no production from the district, except for small shipments of gold ore. The regional geology has been mapped by the Manitoba Department of Mines and Natural Resources, the Falcon Lake stock being shown and recorded as of "varying composition". The more detailed work involved in preparing the accompanying map has necessitated only minor changes in the outline as previously mapped.
