The paper describes the development of components in an lntegrated Furnace Control system for shielded-arc smelting focusing on operation and crucible integrity enhancement. The paper reviews the mechanisms of power, feed and energy input and losses into the shielded-arc smelting process and describes the furnace control system module development and integration to tailor the process. The ultimate success of a furnace control system application is transfer of knowledge, training, and operational support during furnace start-up and ramp-up phases and a model for how this has been achieved is discussed. The control modules of a shielded-arc laterite smelting furnace are described in detail including measured results and screen captures from application in a laterite smelting furnace. This paper focuses on developments in Integrated Furnace Controls tailored to shielded-arc laterite smelting but development of common furnace control modules for improved crucible and tapping operation integrity applied to other furnace processes, including immersed-arc smelting, is also covered. This report comprises a brief outline of the experimental cracking of natural gas in a water-gas generator at Louisville, Kentucky, and a discussion of the results obtained. The work was done under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Louisville Gas & Electric Co. The re-forming or partial cracking of natural gas is not a new process, but one which has been employed in the manufacture of city gas for a number of years. However, the apparatus used heretofore was not a water-gas generator containing a bed of ignited fuel, but instead it was a plurality of connected chambers containing spaced and arranged checker bricks, with means for heating the bricks and for admitting the natural gas. The procedure previously followed was quite different from that used during the tests at Louisville; likewise the results obtained were different. It is not uncommon for companies distributing natural gas to provide gas-generating equipment for producing manufactured gas which is used, mixed with natural gas, during periods of peak demand. Because this equipment is idle much of the time, in some instances being in use only for a few days a year, some of the gas companies have considered using it, during off-peak periods, in the manufacture of some gaseous products and for carbon black which might he produced and marketed with profit. There is one plant of this kind at Louisville. Kentucky. Its maintenance in condition ready to be operated is necessary because of the limited supply of natural gas and because of the variation in demand. The engineers of the Louisville Gas & Electric Co. considered in particular the possibility of cracking natural gas in a water-gas generator by injecting the gas into the incandescent fuel bed, thereby producing a gas comprised largely of hydrogen (H2) and carbon black, an appreciable amount of which is entrained in the gas as it leaves the generator, Because power and gas are available at low prices, Louisville was believed to be a satisfactory location for a plant which could use hydrogen. It was evident that this method of treating natural gas might directly benefit the gas company by: 1. Lowering, the cost of manufactured gas.

In an underground coal mining environment, a frictional ignition may be defined as the ignition of an explosive air/ methane/coal dust mixture by mining machinery. As the use of power loading equipment has become more widespread, frictional ignition incidents have increased. There have been many fatalities and injuries from this cause including the death of eleven miners in Sydney coalfield of Nova Scotia, Canada in 1979. This paper reports on the findings of a preliminary study carried out under the auspices of the Coal Research Laboratories, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. The objective of this study has been to identify a Longwall face cutting system that is inherently safer than the conventional shearer loaders used in Nova Scotia.

Alkyl hydroxamates are well known collectors for oxide copper minerals as evidenced by the large amount of published literature. Our studies on a wide variety of copper ores from around the world have shown that alkyl hydroxamates will recover most of the "floatable" oxide copper minerals from an ore. They are available commercially, and they offer many advantages over alternative technologies for oxide copper recovery. In spite of this, the full potential of hydroxamates has not been exploited in the industry. The objective of this paper is to provide relevant practical aspects and guidelines to facilitate successful application of hydroxamates in operating plants. A critical analysis of the available information and data, based on several case studies, notation testing, and microscopic analysis indicates that alkyl hydroxamates can effectively recover well-defined oxide minerals of copper, but not copper occurrences such as Cu-bearing goethite (often misidentified as cuprite) which report as Acid Soluble copper in chemical assays. Prior to any notation testing with hydroxamates, it is necessary to assess the various modes of occurrence of Acid Soluble copper using microscopic and microprobe analysis.

"The Langmuir model has been widely used for the coal-methane sorption process via an isothermal test. However, even though the temperature-dependent Langmuir model were recognized theoretically and experimentally, the quantitative relationship between the Langmuir’s constants (a & b) and temperature have not been clarified and confirmed by lab test data. This paper collects 158 methane-coal sorption data under different temperatures, which apply the Langmuir model to consider the relationship between Langmuir’s constants (a & b) and temperature (see APPENDIX I). Even though the Langmuir model cannot be used to show the physical state of methane adsorption on coal, it is widely used because of its simplicity and the reasonable explanation of its parameters (a & b). The results from these published isothermal tests confirm that 1) there is no consistent relationship between Langmuir’s constant-a and temperature; 2) the Langmuir model is a temperature-dependent model, and the temperature-dependent feature is mainly shown by the relationship between Langmuir’s constant-b and temperature; 3) The relationship between Langmuir’s constant-b and temperature can be described by both the exponential and linear relationship with dried coal. This paper provides a database for temperature-dependent Langmuir’s model, which can be used for reservoir simulation of coalbed methane reservoir, coal seam degasification modeling for underground coal mines considering the heating effect induced by geotherm and heat injection (via hot water, hot steam, ultrasonic, etc.). INTRODUCTION The isothermal test for gas sorption on coal is one of the fundamental tests in Coalbed Methane (CBM) recovery fields, such as underground coal mine methane degasification, CBM gas-in-place estimation, and carbon dioxide sequestration in un-minable coal seams. Generally, two methods, volumetric and gravimetric, are employed to obtain isothermal data (Bush, A. & Gensterblum, Y., 2012). Based on these two approaches, a series of commercial and self-assembled instruments are built and several calculation methods are used to obtain isothermal data (Bush, A. & Gensterblum, Y., 2012, Gasparik, K., 2014; Goodman, A. L., et al, 2004; Zhang, L., et al, 2013). In the post-processing stage, many models are provided to analyze isothermal data in order to understand the storage mechanism of gas in coal. Common models include the Langmuir model (and its extended forms), the pore-filling model, multilayer adsorption model (BET), and the Gibbs’ model. Much has been written about hydrothermal alteration and the compositional changes induced by it in the wallrocks of mineral deposits, especially in alummino-silicate wallrocks. So much has been written and the descriptions so varied, in fact, that the casual reader frequently is bewildered by the extreme complexities and lack of uniformity, real or apparent. Certainly the mineralogy and chemistry of altered rocks are not as simple as most of us would like, but neither are they as complex in their principal aspects as pa of what has been written would lead us to believe. The trend until recently seems to have been toward greater complexity and hence greater confusion, but the straightforward presentation of Creasey (1959), it is hoped, marks a reversal in this trend.

With the depletion of high-grade lump iron ore, concentrates have been identified as an alternative material for sinter making. Adding concentrates to the sinter mixture reduces sinter bed porosity and gas flow through the sinter bed. This will result in lower sinter strand productivity. A potential solution to this problem is to add concentrate in the form of micropellets. This study investigates the effect of concentrate and micropellet additions on the permeability of the sinter mixture. Permeability was measured on sinter mixtures containing ten to 40 per cent concentrates and micropellets at various moisture contents. The effect of concentrate and micropellet addition on the permeability–moisture relationship was examined. The results confirmed that the addition of concentrates into the sinter mix decreases the maximum permeability of the sinter bed. The incorporation of micropellets into the sinter mix reduced the permeability less than concentrate addition. The study also showed that the maximum permeability of sinter mixes containing concentrate is reached at the same moisture content as the sinter mixture without concentrate addition. For sinter mixes containing micropellets, additional water must be added to obtain maximum permeability. Parameters including the granule size, void fraction and angle of repose were also investigated to evaluate their effects on the sinter bed permeability.CITATION:Nyembwe, A M, Cromarty, R and Garbers-Craig, A M, 2015. IN 1935, Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Limited, initiated an enlarged programme of ventilation. In the mine, surveys were made from time to time by the geological staff, and improvements in ventilation were effected to accord with progress in mining as greater depth was attained. In the summer of 1938 an engineer was trained in the technique of dust sampling. Instruments and equipment for this purpose, such as konimeter, microscope, furnace, etc., were purchased, and a suitable office, equipped with laboratory facilities, was provided. The full time of the engineer is devoted to ventilation and dust control. On surface, in the mill crushing-plant and in the assay office and sample crushing room, an elaborate arrangement of hoods and exhaust systems has been installed to eliminate the dust. These installations, however, are not described in the present paper, which deals only with an extensive programme of underground ventilation as a method of coping with high dust concentrations, increasing temperatures and high humilities.

In the mining industry, as in other business, one of the more satisfactory results of sincere but cheerful effort lies in the proper completion of undertakings and problems, which, to be successful, must continually hold the interest of all concerned in the work. In most undertakings, genuine interest and satisfaction is largely dependent on the proper appraisal of opportunities presented, and the opportunity to associate ourselves with sinking operations at McIntyre central shaft, from the surface to a depth of 4,133 feet, was genuinely appreciated. This opportunity was made possible by the previous persistent and successful leadership of Mr. J. P. Bickell, President, with the assistance of his associates, and of the general manager, Mr. R.J. Ennis, in the development of the McIntyre Porcupine mine, and I beg to state that any success in this sinking operation was very largely due to the congenial co-operation and splendid workmanship of Captain Martin C. Horne, his shift bosses, leaders, and all those who worked with us . Our slogan throughout was " Safety First for Pleasant and Efficient Workmanship," and this general policy made it possible to sink and timber 2.,123 feet during the first year without a serious accident.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of an effort to maximize minerals and metals recovery from domestic resources, has investigated the feasibility of recovering heavy minerals as byproducts from sand and gravel, placer gold, and industrial mineral operations in northern California. Sand samples from about 50 locations were treated by gravity separation to yield heavy-mineral concentrates (black sands). Mineral compositions of the concentrates were determined by chemical analysis and mineralogical examination. Individual zircon, ilmenite, magnetite, platinum-group metals, thoria, and silica products were prepared from heavy-mineral concentrates by selective separation using low-and high-intensity magnetic, high-tension, and flotation equipment.

On March 6, 1924, the Bureau of Mines approved the ""M.S.A. self-rescuer’ manufactured by the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., after the M.S.A- self-rescuer bad passed all the tests and requirements of the Bureau's Schedule 14A4.The purpose of the self-rescuer is to help miners to escape from mines in which fires are burning or explosions have occurred, by providing protection from carbon monoxide for at least one half-hour. The self-rescuer can be used similarly by workers above ground who may through accident become surrounded or entrapped by atmospheres containing carbon monoxide.no hazards threaten the miner, who escapes serious injury by fire or violence in a large mine fire namely, ( 1) asphyxiation by poisonous carbon monoxide gas; and (2) suffocation by insufficient oxygen to support life. In order to save himself, the miner must either erect a barrica4e5 against afterdamp and wait restoration of ventilation and rescue or take a long chance at getting out of the mine through entries not permeated by afterdamp.. "This study explores froth flotation and selective flocculation methods to recycle waste phosphors containing several rare earth elements, namely, yttrium (Y), europium (Eu), cerium (Ce) and terbium (Tb). The effects of the presence or absence of collector and of flocculant and their dosages, as well as the pH, were investigated. Reverse flotation resulted in concentrates with grade of 27.03 percent and recovery rate of 71.36 percent, while flocculation resulted in concentrates with grade of 31.43 percent and recovery rate of 91.28 percent. The flotation and flocculation behaviors were further analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, zeta potential measurements, particle size distribution and other methods. The successful separation of rare earth minerals by flotation was attributed to the selective adsorption of the collector onto quartz, making it particularly recoverable by reverse flotation so as to be separated from the valuable materials. The analysis of the particle aggregation process indicated that its better flocculation performance was due to the selective adsorption of flocculants onto the unwanted materials, enlarging the flocculant sizes by forming aggregations and facilitating the separation of rare earth minerals from waste materials based on different settling rates. IntroductionBecause waste phosphors pose the problems of heavy environmental burden and high risk to human health (Hu and Cheng, 2012) as a result of containing heavy metals such as mercury and manganese (He et al., 2006; Lucas and Emery, 2006), they have received added attention as urban mining resources for extracting rare earth elements (REEs) like yttrium (Y), europium (Eu), cerium (Ce) and terbium (Tb).At present, chemical processes such as acid leaching, alkali fusion, roasting and extraction are the primary methods for recovering REEs from waste phosphors (De Michelis et al., 2011; Li et al., 2012; Li, 2010). With these strategies, phosphors can be effectively decomposed and their REEs extracted. After the removal of impurities, the REEs can be efficiently precipitated by adding an H2C2O4 solution (Porob et al., 2012). Although relatively high recovery rates are achieved, those processes entail high energy consumption and can cause severe environmental pollution."

Use of nuclear reactors to furnish high-temperature heat is a field that has not received as much attention as propulsion and electric power production. Investigations are being conducted under a joint Atomic Energy Commission (AEC)--Bureau of Mines research program to determine the feasibility of using nuclear heat for chemical processing. A part of this process-heat-reactor program is the study of a system in [hich] helium transfers heat from 8 nuclear reactor to a chemical processing [essel]. This requires construction of (1) a nuclear reactor to operate with helium exit temperature of 2,500° F. and with pressures in the range of 250 to 500 p.s.i.g. and (2) a processing vessel (heat exchanger) to convert the enthalpy of the helium into chemical process reaction heat. Neither component exists at present, and development of each promises to be a formidable task. To aid in the study of such a system, the Bureau of Mines has designed and constructed a vessel heated by electrical induction to simulate a source of nuclear fission heat. This vessel is undergoing preliminary testing. Gasification of coal and reforming of hydrocarbons are promising uses for nuclear heat. It appears that a higher price per unit of nuclear heat can be tolerated for chemical processing than that allowable for power generation.

A new technique for the determination of trace levels of uranium in solution has been developed. A compact laser emits short, but intense, ultraviolet pulses to excite the green fluorescence of a uranyl-complex formed by the addition of a proprietary reagent to the sample. Organic species present in most natural waters also fluoresce quite intensely, but their emission does not last appreciably longer than the excitation pulse, in contrast to the relatively long persistence of the uranyl fluorescence . Electronic 'gating' is employed to separate the long-lived contribution, rejecting substantially the organic emission. Results using the laser fluorescence method on many sets of natural waters of various origins have been compared against corresponding values generated by independent laboratories. Correlation has been generally good over a range from less than 0.1 to more than 100 ppb U. Solid samples have also been analyzed after extraction of the uranium into solution. Accuracies adequate for most exploration purposes have been achieved, but further work is required to determine effects of interferences in samples with complex matrices. The transport and deposition of uranium in natural waters is controlled by the organic and inorganic chemistry of the waters involved. It is suggested that interpretation of very low uranium levels will be aided by additional measurements of conductivity and organic content, with subsequent statistical treatment.

Its a pleasure to be with you this afternoon and to talk briefly on one of my favorite subjects -- the U.S. sulphur industry. As our Chairman mentioned, I have been associated with the sulphur industry either directly or indirectly for the last twenty years, both on the production side and as a consumer. Sulphur, while unseen and relatively unknown to most people, is like margarine ... that ubiquitous spread ... that is yellow and nearly omnipresent in the industrial world. It is because sulphur, in some form, is required in nearly all aspects of our economy that makes its study so interesting to me as a researcher. An analysis of the sulphur outlook requires examination of such industries as fertilizer, paints and pigments, copper and zinc, uranium, petroleum, chemicals, pulp and paper and textiles - just to name a few. Of course, because its use is so widespread and ever-changing it is difficult to develop and maintain a good understanding of the sulphur industry. It is also a problem to cover the industry in a short discussion and to project its really dynamic nature. Hut, if you will bear with me, I will attempt the task. First of all, let me say that sulphur today is a world commodity and to a large extent moves freely in world trade; nearly a third of the world's sulphur or something over 15 million tons in 1974 entered international trade. However, today our interest is in the current changing sulphur picture in the U.S., with particular emphasis on the western part of the country.

Driving long development raises probably is one of the most hazardous and expensive operations in underground mining. The safe handling of men and materials becomes more difficult and more time consuming in the higher sections of the raise. The efficient ventilation of these sections often is a major problem. This information circular describes a unique method by which Resurrection Mining Co, safely and efficiently completed a 622-foot vertical raise at its Irene shaft near Leadville, Colo. The method used by the company involved driving a raw, 6-foot-diameter ventilation raise and emergency escapeway, using a work cage that was suspended on a hoisting rope extended down a small-diameter drill hole. Although the method was new and experimental, the raise was completed in record time. Overall costs were less than they would have been with conventional methods. The company's initial experience suggested improvements both in design and operating technique that should prove of value to others who contemplate using the cage method of raising

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and full-scale tests to develop a process for improving the flotation characteristics of lime-treated waste water produced by the Kennecott Copper Corp., Magna, UT. Unknown substances in the waste water reduced the flotation efficiency of the metal sulfides. An estimated annual loss of 795,000 lb Cu, 232,000 lb Mo, 5,625 tr oz Ag, and 617 tr oz Au would result from recycling the total flow from the lime treatment plant to the flotation mill in an effort to conserve water and reduce associated expense. The tests indicated that aeration or treatment with activated carbon significantly improved the water quality. The improvements in molybdenum recovery averaged 8 pct for carbon, 11 pet for activated carbon, and 16 pct for combined aeration and activated carbon. The combination of the two processes produced water quality as good as or better than normal feed water.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in research to assess the hazards associated with the handling, storage, and use of combustible gases, vapors, and. liquids encountered in mines and in industry. As a part of this general pro-gram, numerous limits of flammability and ignition temperatures are being investigated for a wide variety of combustible materials, and methods are being developed to minimize the explosion hazards of these combustibles. The Bureau receives numerous requests for information on the explosion hazards of specified combustible mixtures under various conditions of use. This information circular has been prepared to assist those who may have similar requests. Destined primarily for the layman with a limited technical knowledge of the subject, it considers rather briefly the numerous factors that enter into the general problem of gaseous explosions and their prevention.

The Dempsey tract in Washington County, Mo., had a small production of lead-zinc ore from shallow workings. Old dumps from early-day lead mining contain about 25,000 tons of ore averaging about 3 percent combined zinc and lead. Because of the urgent war requirements for lead and zinc, the Dempsey property was examined by Otto Ruhl, formerly an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in August 1942 and selected for further investigation by churn drilling twenty holes totaling 1,309 feet were bored in the fall of 1943. The results of the work are presented in this paper.

Monitoring devices have been installed at several mine sites to assess the potential for the development of acid rock drainage (ARD) in waste rock, spent ore, and tailings material. In addition, instrumentation has been designed for monitoring changes in water quality in pit lakes. These devices monitor temperature, oxygen, water movement, and water chemistry in the waste rock pile. This information can be used to evaluate the current and future ARD risk, the effectiveness of caps and covers, and provide information to aid in the design of other reclamation strategies that limit ARD development. The instrumentation includes nested thermistors and oxygen sensing ports, neutron access tubes, heat dissipation units (HDUs), and lysimeters. Many of the monitoring devices can be linked to a datalogger and telemetry systems, enabling monitoring data to be downloaded from the office.
