IN reviewing the design of the ore haulage system for the Morenci project, the reader should bear in mind that the railroad and its equpiment cannot be considered as an independent railroad provided only for the purpose of transporting ore from one point to another, but as an integral part of the operation which begins at the electric shovels loading ore at the mine, and ends where the ore, after having been crushed in the primary crushing plant, is deposited in the bins at the secondary crushing plant. Obviously then, the problem consisted of designing a system that would function to the best possible advantage in complete co-ordination with the other units.

"The Geotextile Encased Columns (GEC) deep foundation system for embankments and dikes on soft soils was introduced some 20 years ago and is now considered State-of-the-art in Germany, Europe and, step by step, worldwide. The GECs consist of compacted non-cohesive granular fill similar e.g. to common gravel columns with one decisive difference: they are confined in a high-strength, high-modulus, flexible geotextile “cylinder” (encasement). This engineered element with parameters being adaptable in a wide range provides a decisive tool to control and optimize the behavior of the GEC foundation system. Consequently, the GECs work properly even in extremely soft soils, and a wide range of fills inclusive of sands can be used. In the meantime vast design and technological experience is available and codified design methods exist. Initially the paper briefly describes the general idea, the basics and specifics of design, construction technology, materials, restrictions and optimal application areas. Then it focuses on three informative case studies. They are briefly presented focusing for brevity only on the most important facts and experience inclusive of the most meaningful data of short- and long-term measurement programs.INTRODUCTIONWhen considering embankments on soft soils, generally two groups of solutions exist:Unsupported embankments; there are four main options:a) build up embankment extremely slowly waiting for sufficient consolidation after every stage;b) replace the soft soil partially or totally;c) install a high-strength basal reinforcement providing overall and local stability and allowing much faster embankment construction;d) combine c) with strip drains to accelerate consolidation and thus the construction process additionally (Fig. 1, left).Today, practically only option ""d"" is of practical relevance. Despite all the pros and cons, the common attribute of all non-supported options is that local and overall stability (Ultimate Limit State-ULS) can be achieved and controlled, but not the short- and long-term settlements (Serviceability Limit State-SLS). The latter can be significant, e.g. up to 30% of the nominal planned embankment height. Supported embankments (Fig. 1, right): the main common idea is to over-bridge the soft soil layers by supporting vertical elements of different types: rigid piles, trench walls etc. or by ""softer"" solutions of different column types (compacted, cemented, mixed-in-place etc.). Herein the borderlines between “piles”, ""pile-similar elements"" and ""soil improvement” are fluent and depend on country, traditions, codes etc. The common attribute of the “supported” schemes is a minimized settlement. Twenty years ago a new specific solution was launched: the Geotextile Encased Columns (GEC), which is discussed in more detail below."

Since 1976 CVRD is carrying out tests to develop a type of pellet made with organic binder. One binder that showed good possibility to be used in industrial plants is Peridur. An extensive framework of tests was run in CVRD's pilot plant. The results are presented in this paper. Finally, the decision was taken to carry out an industrial production of 50.000 t of pellets. It was scheduled for March '81. The results are shown in this pager. It was not observed any detrimental effect of the peridur neither in the process nor in the product quality.

Por tal motivo, el presente texto señala los planes y estrategias para el cumplimiento de los estándares de calidad (EKA) de los suelos. En la promulgación de D.S. N°02 2013-MINAM que aprueba dichos estándares, se establece el último componente por norma para conocer la cantidad de contaminación del suelo. Este decreto propone una serie de etapas en la gestión de suelos contaminados que van desde la ecuación de los instrumentos de gestión ambiental, la investigación de situación de estos suelos contaminados en la zona de producción para determinar el estado en el que se encuentran y la recuperación ambiental por parte de un plan de descontaminación de suelos.

Dual-energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) imaging is known from safety luggage inspections at airports. The use of DE-XRT technology for sorting applications in the primary raw materials industry has been the subject of numerous investigations. Beside other metal ores, X-ray transmission sorting is already used for the preconcentration of tungsten ore, gold ore and coal. The applicability of DE-XRT sorting is limited to ore types where differences in metal concentrations are measurable, based on an interpretation of X-ray images. Metal contents in particles occur in large varieties in terms of concentration, grain sizes, spatial distribution and mineralogy and therefore influence the X-ray absorption. As a result, each ore has to be tested individually for its suitability for DE-XRT sorting. The objective of current research at the Department of Mineral Processing (AMR) at RWTH Aachen University is to assess parameters influencing the detectability of rare earth oxides. Two approaches were followed: (1) Practical test work, based on artificial ore samples of defined compositions and (2) Computer-based simulation of absorption features of identical particle compositions. In total, more than 300 artificial samples of various compositions and metal grades were produced and X-ray images from DE-XRT sorting were analyzed. Results from the DE-XRT sensor were put into correlation with metal grades and particle sizes, to analyze influences and limits on the detectability of rare earth oxides. In addition, a new approach was tested in which the X-ray absorption of particles of various compositions was determined based on a Monte Carlo (MCNP) simulation. During the simulation, similar compositions, as used for the artificial samples, were tested and the X-ray absorption behavior during DE-XRT sorting was determined. A comparison of results from both approaches is used to assess the applicability of the MCNP-simulation for the prediction of the X-ray attenuation behavior during DE-XRT sorting.

The use of finite element programs for evaluating large grinding mill shells is becoming increasingly popular. However, large scale, detailed analysis can become a burdensome task when one is required to manually prepare the necessary data to be entered into the program, while evaluating the voluminous results is even more devastating. Although available computerized finite element analyses can reduce computation time from years to months or even weeks, additional pre and post processors can reduce the time for data preparation and result evaluation to hours, while simultaneously reducing the probability of human error. Examples of the uses of these processors are presented as well as typical modeling techniques.

THE stock exchange and its functions is about as well understood by the average individual as the fourth dimension. What is a stock exchange? Divested of the rules and regulations by which it is governed, and the facilities it provides for the convenient handling of securities, it would be in its nude state nothing more or less than a meeting place for brokers. The stock exchange in America dates back to 1752, when a group of merchants of New York established a meeting place at the foot of Broad Street for the purpose of dealing in meal and slaves. The first definite orgarization, however, had its beginning in 1792 when 24 New York brokers signed an agreement not to buy or sell public stock for less than one quarter per cent. commission. From this small group has grown by gradual degrees, the greatest organized security market in the world, namely, the New York Stock Exchange. At the present time there are 27 stock exchanges in the United States and 5 in Canada. Based on the volume of business transacted, the Los Angeles Stock Exchange ranks 6th among them. This is attributable to the fact that strictly speaking Los Angeles has never been a stock exchange town, like some other large cities. Take for instance San Francisco, which supported one stock exchange from 1862 to .1882 and has since supported two. No city, by the way, should tolerate two stock exchanges at the same time. It is an economic folly and a senseless duplication that can be compared with rival telephone companies or competing street railway systems, paralleling each other's lines and always leads to trouble and confusion, and sooner or later one or the other falls by the wayside. While Los Angeles has had stock exchanges of one kind or another since 1896, none of them attracted much attention until 1899 when the present exchange was organized and it did not get well under way until along in 1906.

In-hole detonation pressure measurements are unusual in the production environment of a mining operation, partly owing to the hostile conditions to which recording equipment and pertinent probes must be subjected and, partly by the constraints of the production cycle. In recent decades, detonation pressure measurement techniques have been developed using low carbon resistors (LCR)-based gauges. They are cheap, relatively easy-to-operate, robust and with a high percentage of success in both open-pit and underground mining. Detonation pressure measurements are extremely important when carrying out numerical modelling to simulate explosive induced vibrations, since simulation results are highly dependent on the pressure-time history applied on the blasthole wall. Analytical equations have typically been used to model the pressure-time history; however, they usually do not adequately represent the behaviour of the explosive in terms of: peak pressure reached, rise time, mean frequency, decay and shape of the signal. Experimental records may be directly used instead of utilizing synthetic signals if they are available. In this work, (LCR)-based gauges are used to measure detonation pressure inside a production blasthole. The operation principle of the gauges utilized and the instrumentation layout is described in detail. A flexible resolution USB oscilloscope with high sampling rate has been used to catch the elusive pressure peak event. Measurements were carried out in production blasts fired with ANFO (0.86 g/cm3) in an underground mine––this also includes velocity of detonation (VOD) records––. A procedure based on the shock impedance matching has been developed to calculate the detonation pressure due to the characteristics of the gauges prevent its direct measurement. Detonation pressures obtained range from 1.71 to 2.97 GPa (248.01 to 430.76 ksi) which are in line with pressures calculated from the VOD records. Mean frequency and rise time analysis shows that 2 of 3 signals cannot be described using typical analytical equations.

THE war is now behind us. We in the mining industry feel a just pride in the part that our industry and our men and our products played in defeating the enemy on the fighting fronts around the world. In five years of mobilization and actual combat, our mines and oil wells produced over 3 billion tons of coal, a billion tons of petroleum, 500 million tons of iron ore, 21/4 million tons of lead, 31/2 million tons of zinc, 5 million tons of copper, 14 million tons of bauxite, 17 million tons of sulphur, 68 million tons of salt, and 3 million tons of potash. It was an unparalleled performance. But what of today? Why the present low production and high costs? Among the black clouds in the mining sky none are so black as that presented by the labor situation. We know it is the result of the legislation and the interpretation of that legislation in the past ten or fifteen years. Since the passage of the Norris-LaGuardia Act in 1932, we have had nothing but a succession of laws, regulations, and decisions that have intensified the strength of the unions and made the operators of the mines and the sources of their financing prartirally impotent

NOW that the dust of World War II has settled and we and our allies are faced with extravagant losses of men, money, and materials, virtually the only hope that the United States and Britain have in the way of reparations lies in the capture of industrial, technical, and scientific secrets. Even during the war American and British scientists and technicians gained access to German factories, questioned German personnel, studied German documents, and endeavored generally to keep pace with new discoveries in science, industrial technology, and process development. Under various agencies this work continued for two years after the war. Altogether at least 600 American scientists and industrialists have gone to Germany and brought back reports and several times as many British, Canadian, and. Australian investigators have been similarly engaged under co-operative arrangements designed to assure the maximum of coverage with a minimum duplication of effort. As a result of these investigations and document studies, about 500 or 600 reports have been prepared on metallurgical and allied subjects. Those by American authors or joint teams have been listed in the annotated Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports, issued by the Office of Technical Services in the U. S. Department of Commerce. Many of the British reports are also available in this country through the same office or through a British representative in New York. TWENTY-FIVE years ago the training of an engineer was of interest solely to the educator and to the student entering the field. At that time the engineer's position in society was relatively simple. His training emphasized design and operation and he expected to enter industry to handle the engineering problems of raw materials production, mechanical and product design, and the operation of power plants, factories, transportation and communication systems, and similar phases of industrial activity. He was not concerned with or particularly interested in the problems of management, administration, sales, publicity, industrial relations, or of legislation. To a large degree he was content to leave these matters to self-made businessmen, or men trained in law, finance, or commerce. That period in the evolution of the engineer is now history. It is generally conceded that the modern world is dependent upon engineering technology for its day-to-day survival. THE northern anthracite fields, although facing the same economic problems as the southern fields, are confronted with the additional problem of fast dwindling reserves of anthracite which can be conventionally and economically won. The mining of coal which remains in thin beds and the recovery of pillars from areas heretofore considered unrecoverable, either by reason of cost or surface restriction, pose problems of in- creasing importance to the economic life of the northern field operations. Successful approaches have Been made to this problem and other work is being performed that holds promise. There exists in the northern anthracite field millions of tons of solid coal, the recovery of which has not been too successful due to the following inherent operating faults: inability to concentrate producing areas; the great quantities of rock to be cut and handled, lack of consideration of proper sequence and speed of second mining, and the continued use of the mine car as the basis of payment. A mining system that has successfully solved these major problems has been in operation in the Scranton area since 1944. Over 1% million tons have been produced from veins varying from 3 to 4% ft thick by this method, which is known as the multiple panel-triangular system-conveyor mining.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the circumstances leading to fall from equipment injuries in the mining industry. Method: The 2006 and 2007 Mine Safety and Health Administration annual injury databases were utilized for this study whereby the injury narrative, nature of injury, body part injured, mine type, age at injury, and days lost were evaluated for each injury. Results: The majority of injuries occurred at surface mining facilities (~60%) with fractures and sprains/strains being the most common injuries occurring to the major joints of the body. Nearly 50% of injuries occurred during ingress/egress, predominately during egress, and approximately 25% of injuries occurred during maintenance tasks. The majority of injuries occurred in relation to large trucks, wheel loaders, dozers, and conveyors/belts. The severity of injury was independent of age and the median days lost was seven days; however, there was a large range in severity. Impact on industry: From the data obtained in this study, several different research areas have been identified for future work, which include balance and stability control when descending ladders and equipment design for maintenance tasks.

MR. E. L. Longmore (l), in presenting this paper at the Annual General Meeting, suggested that it was neither desirable nor necessary to read any but the briefest portion of the paper. He wished to emphasize that the scale of the milling operations at the Hollinger not only provided several units in continuous operation to ensure that the test work was being carried on under normal conditions, but also provided a large and competent staff to supervise such an extensive experiment and to criticize intelligently the recorded results. He wished to acknowledge the enthusiastic co-operation of the group of assistants whose excellent work was responsible for the confidence with which the conclusions could be presented. The following data were given as a supplement to the published paper. Following conclusion of the test work described in the paper, the size of the balls fed to the mill was changed from 3-in. diameter to 2Yz-in. Within a short time, a gradual rise in the tonnage rate took place and, as no other condition had been changed, the increased tonnage was credited to the changed character of the ball load. At present, the average daily tonnage for the mill with low discharge is 1,507 tons, an increase of 77 tons over the 1,430 tons ground when feeding a 3-in. ball. A similar increase in tonnage should be credited to the high-discharge test, if the 2;Y2-in. ball had been used at that time. This would raise the 1,117 tons ground at that time to a new figure of 1,177 tons. From a study made to determine those factors influencing the rate of pulp flow through the low-discharge mill, it became evident that the ball screen used on the high-discharge mill must have been restricting the flow through the mill, although this was not recognized at the time. Accord-ingly, it was decided to repeat the high-discharge run. Additional length was added to the 21-in. ring grizzly originally used, and the length of the reverse spiral was increased. The end of the grizzly was left open so that, if necessary, excess pulp might flow out. A coarse mesh 3 ft. by 3 ft. flat screen was provided to catch stray balls.

"DEM application in mineral processing has for many years been heavily focused on simulating mills of various types. This method can be used to simulate many other aspects of mineral processing operations and can be used both to enhance understanding of the underlying flows and of issues such a breakage, wear, blockage, product degradation, segregation and mixing. The application of DEM to four important classes of non-comminution problems and equipment commonly found in or near mineral processing plants are described. These are:- Particle transport (examples include a conveyor belt and an inclined screw conveyor)- Sampling (assessment of sample bias for cross-stream samplers)- Separation (the efficiency of vibrating screens)- Storage and reclaim (discharge from a multi-port hopper and segregation in a splitter bin with asymmetric ingoing and outgoing conveyor belts, apron feeders and impact plate)."

"Research at Delft University aims to develop systems for automatic inspection and sorting of bulk solids which can be applied in the mineral processing and recycling industry. A recent development includes an automatic sorter based on airport X-ray inspection technology. It is designed for continuous inspection and sorting of 5 - 150 mm solids and has as objective a cost effective and high capacity on-line inspection and sorting.Dual energy X-ray transmission imaging provides instantaneous data about particle dimensions and the atomic number distribution. The system provides particle thickness and average atomic number on a pixel level at scanning speeds between 250 and 500 lines / second. With existing X-ray components inspection speeds between 0.5 and 2 m/s at approximately 1-meter inspection width and between 1.5*1.5 and 5*5 mm2 sensor resolution can be achieved.Imaging algorithms that were developed by Delft University for applications in recycling, waste cleaning and other applications acquire shape, size distribution and composition data. Currently on-line processing of a product at a rate of around 200 particles per second is possible using a standard PC. Experiments with a demonstration X-ray unit indicated good potential for various applications in solids processing. They include continuous inspection of organic content, sulphur, chlorine, ash, and metal distribution. It is applicable for coal cleaning, ore sorting, industrial minerals, and various applications within waste cleaning and recycling. "Recent developments in the analysis of piled rafts has incorporated the load sharing of the raft and the piles to support the superstructure. In the piled-raft system, piles are cast monolithically with the raft and the load is partly transmitted by the raft to the soil directly below it, and partly by the piles to more competent deep soil. While these piles are effective in increasing the bearing capacity and reducing the settlements, they often lead to significant straining actions at the pile head-raft connection which may constitute the weakest link. An attempt to provide a more economical solution, that at the same time overcomes this weak link, is to disconnect the pile heads from the raft and introduce an intermediate cushion of compacted fill. In this case, the piles are considered as reinforcement to the subsoil and will also act as settlement reducers. This paper investigates the load transfers mechanism of the unconnected piled raft with cushion using ABAQUS finite elements Program. The main objective is to provide an in depth analysis of the raft–soil–pile interactions in multi-layered soil under static and seismic loads. The investigated system provides an economical alternative for traditional connected piled raft foundation, where there is no need to reinforce the piles, no need for pile head demolition or expensive waterproofing of the pile head connection. Cost analyses of unconnected versus connected piled raft systems confirmed a cost savings in the construction that may reach from 50 to 70 percent.INTRODUCTIONDesigners around the world have gained more confidence to use the piled-raft as a more realistic system where the raft and the piles share transferring the superstructure loads to shallow and deep soil layers. A further advancement is to use unconnected piled rafts as another practical and economical alternative to the traditional piled rafts. Unconnected piled raft is also synonymous to settlement reducing piles; or simply, soil improvement piles. Liang et al. (2003) has extended the concept of pile-raft-foundation to a new type of foundation called composite piled raft foundation or unconnected piled raft foundation. The foundation is composed of a sand/gravel cushion sandwiched between the raft and piles. The piles group may contain short and long piles. The short piles are constructed of flexible materials such as soil-cement columns or sand-gravel columns, and are used mainly to improve the bearing capacity of shallow soft soil; the long piles, which are made of relatively rigid materials such as concrete, and their main function is to reduce settlements. The cushion plays an important role in mobilizing the bearing capacity of the subsoil and in modifying the load transfer mechanism of the piles. In Shanghai, China, this system of unconnected piled raft has proved to be quite suitable and effective in coastal areas, where deep soft soil deposits exist."
