During the last decade various modifications of room and pillar and sub-level methods have been tried in an effort to eliminate gob-fires, dangers from roof falls, surface subsidence and to increase efficiency of extraction in the Armutcuk Mine, Turkey. It was eventually decided that the most likely system to give maximum benefits in view of existing geological conditions and coal seam characteristics was a system of cut-and-fill stoping employing hydraulic stowing. This paper has attempted to examine the trends of working techniques of hydraulic stowing. In addition, the results achieved and technical problems involved are discussed.

In mid-Tertiary time a wet silici-alkalic magma penetrated the Precambrian rocks of what is now the Tenmile Range of Central Colorado and formed the Climax Stock. The stock is a composite one and was intruded in four separate irruptions, each giving rise to a major hydrothermal event. The first three of these produced large stockwork ore bodies that cap and flank the tops of their respective source intrusives; the fourth, and last, yielded almost no commercial mineralization. The ore bodies and their related zones of alteration are circular to ring-shaped in plan and arcuate in section. The different phases of the stock are so positioned with respect to each other that many of the circular and arcuate zones of mineralization and alteration overlap or are juxtaposed. Evidence of a time separation between the different ore bodies is found in certain dikes that were intruded between periods of mineralization and are well mineralized in one ore body but are barren in another. If it is assumed that the parent magma at Climax contained 10 per cent "water," that the "water" contained 0.1 grams per liter of molybdenum, and that the processes of extraction were 100 per cent efficient, then approximately 10 cubic miles of magma would be required for the formation of each ore body. The volume requirements, taken in conjunction with the cross-sectional areas of the different phases of the stock to explored depths, suggest to the authors that each magma chamber was columnar, extended to a depth of thousands of feet, and was connected with a much larger master reservoir. The repetition of similar intrusive, structural, and hydrothermal events, indicates periodic tapping of this reservoir. A regular chemical evolution of the parent magma is suggested by the systematic change in metal ratios and differences in the sites of deposition, relative to the source intrusive, in each of the four separate igneous hydrothermal stages. The preparation of ground was due to changes in magmatic and/ or hydrothermal pressures within the igneous-hydrothermal columns; small, repeated, up and down movements of the rock enclosing the tops of the columns formed the stockwork fractures into which the mineralizers penetrated. The forceful emplacement of each successive phase of the Climax Stock resulted in a slight doming and rotation to the westward of the earlier-formed geologic features. Postore normal displacement along the Mosquito fault is estimated at about 9000 feet. Part of one ore body was cut by the fault and lies at depth below the Paleozoic sedimentary strata on the hanging wall. On the footwall side of the fault, subaerial erosion and glaciation removed a large part of one ore body and uncovered the top of a second.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small-scale, continuous tests of weathered mica-pegmatite ores from Randolph County, Ala., to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. Two flotation methods were used in continuous tests for recovery of mica. One method utilized acid-cationic flotation for the recovery of coarse mica and alkaline-anionic-cationic flotation for recovering fine mica. This method yielded mica concentrates containing 98.6 percent mica with a recovery of 85.9 percent. The other method was based on the Bureau-developed alkaline-anionic-cationic method, and yielded concentrates containing 97.5 percent mica with a recovery of over 90 percent. In both methods, preconcentration of the ground ore on a Humphreys spiral was employed to reject over half of the feed in a product virtually free of mica.

The object of this research was to investigate the technical feasibility of preparing chromium metal by the thermal decomposition of bisbenzene chromium. Bisbenzene chromium, a pi-bonded sandwich type organometallic compound, was thermally decomposed under reduced pressure to form a metal plate on a heated substrate. Metal recovery was close to 100 percent of theoretical, with deposition rates up to 20.8 mg/hr/cm2. Metal purity was dependent not only upon the purity of the starting material, but also upon the sublimation rate of bisbenzene chromium. Total detectable metallic impurities ranged from a low of 18 ppm to several hundred ppm. In general, metallic impurities were less than 100 ppm. Carbon, the major nonmetallic impurity, ranged from less than 0.3 percent to more than 10 percent. The carbon contamination is most likely a result of the decomposition of the organic portion of bisbenzene chromium. An unusual property of some of the deposits was their outstanding corrosion resistance. Unlike pure electrolytic chromium, which dissolves readily, these deposits were insoluble in hot mineral acids.

PART 1: DENSE MEDIUM SEPARATION by M. SOKASKI, M. R. GEER and H. F. YANCEY INTRODUCTION In the early days of coarse-coal treatment by the dense-medium process in Europe, loess was one of the materials used for medium solids. Newly developed cyclones were used to reclaim and thicken :he loess suspension. On occasion, when the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine in the Netherlands plugged, the overflow was found to be filled with clean coal free of impurity. From this observation stemmed the concept of the cyclone as a cleaning device. Development took place during World War 11 in the laboratory of the Dutch State Mines under the direction of M. G. Driessen. A 15-ton-per-hour pilot plant was in operation in the laboratory by 1945, when, in September, Driessen made the first public disclosure of the process in a paper presented to the Institute of Fuel in London. In April 1945,2 operation of this pilot plant was observed by one of the authors, who was so impressed with the potential of the cyclone process that, on his return to the United States, a research program on the cyclone was started by the Bureau of Mines immediately. This work led to an AIME paper in 1946 in which the first details of cyclone operation on American coals was made available. Commercial adoption of the cyclone proceeded in Europe, initially in the Netherlands, Germany, and France. In the United States, where coal is less costly and most of the coals are so easy to clean they respond well to simpler cleaning systems, the first cyclone plant was not built until 1961.3 As of the spring of 1967, a total of 31 commercial cy- clone plants had been installed or were under construction in the United States; this does not include eight Dynawhirlpool plants. The capacity of the cyclone plants ranges from 50 to 1300 tons per hour and totals 6600. THEORY Before discussing the theory of a dense medium cyclone, a brief description may be helpful to some readers who are not familiar with its basic operation. In a typical dense-medium cyclone, illustrated in figure 10-1, the mixture of medium and raw coal enters tangentially near the top of the cylindrical section, thus forming a strong vertical flow. The refuse moves along the wall of the cyclone and is discharged through the under- flow orifice. The washed coal moves toward the longitudinal axis of the cyclone and passes through the vortex finder to the overflow chamber.

A study was made of the effect of small additions of metallic solutes on the thermodynamic activity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth in the range 450o to 650°C. The experimental measurements were made in a multielectrode galvanic cell using. a fused LiCl-KCl electrolyte. The activity of zinc in binary solution exhibited a strong positive deviation from Raoult's law and obeyed Henry 's law to at least 0.050 mole fraction. The ternary addition of lead, gallium, or indium increased the activity of zinc. Cadmium or tin additions slightly decreased the zinc activity. Copper, mercury, silver, or antimony caused moderate decreases, while gold strongly decreased the zinc activity. The results are expressed in terms of Wagner's interaction parameter ejZn and a second-order cross-interaction parameter. The interactions for copper, gold, silver, and antimony showed a linear dependence with reciprocal absolute temperature, while the other interactions were essentially independent of temperature over the experimental range. Since tin and antimony decreased the zinc activity, the hypothesis of a purely periodic variation with atomic number was rejected. A semiquantitative explanation was possible with a free-electron model when relative electronegativities were used to express changes in the electron/atom ratio caused by the solute addition. Random solution and quasi-chemical models correctly predicted the majority of the interactions for which binary data were available to apply them. A knowledge of the thermodynamic interactions in liquid (and solid) metallic solutions is of considerable theoretical and experimental interest in the formulation of quantitative thermodynamic relations for metallurgical processes. The approaches to defining the interactions may be either phenomenological (i.e., "What mathematical function adequately describes observed behavior and permits extrapolation to new situations?") or theoretical, such as a specific model

In the United States, this is because of the booming condition of the industry and because of the purchase of control of a number of America's largest coal producers by the integrated oil and metal producing companies seeking additional fossil fuel reserves and diversification. In this regard, it is interesting to note that ownership of America's largest strip coal producer was recently acquired by one of the world's largest copper mining companies. In Canada, the conclusion of several large-scale, long-term contracts for the sale of coal to the Japan Steel Group and the projected use of Canadian coal in steel mills in the western United States has focused much attention on the coal industry."

The principal purpose of this study was the development of an engineering and economic model of a hypothetical large-scale open pit gold mining operation. The guiding concept in developing the model was the idea that, through study of a number of such models, it would be possible to evaluate a mineral property and to make reasonable estimates of the benefits to be derived from research in mining and metallurgy. The model by use of a computer is able to produce results easily and quickly when cost factors are varied. Cost factors may be varied as a result of assumptions of improved technology or of assumptions of assuming different approaches or methods to accomplish a particular segment of the mining or processing operation. The discounted cash flow rate of return was used to measure the effect of changes in costs or expected revenue. In this study, assumptions based on past processing practices were made in an effort to reduce costs of processing the ore These assumptions were: (1) Eliminating the low-grade cyanide circuit; (2) reducing the quantity of material to be processed by screening after crushing; and (3) using a combination of assumptions (1) and (2). All three assumptions resulted in reduced capital investment and operating cost that caused substantial increases in the rate of return.

This publication is designed to be helpful in promoting health and safety in tunneling and related operations. The format has been selected and arranged to provide a condensed guide for safety personnel, inspection and investigative agencies, design and project engineers, and others responsible for the health and safety of workmen. All the precautionary measures recommended are based on actual conditions observed, from investigations of fatal or serious accidents, and from research conducted to find ways and means of alleviating hazards and unhealthful conditions. Many of the recommended rules are included in State laws and in the general safety requirements of the construction industry. Explanatory, descriptive, and qualifying information has been largely omitted in this publication to keep basic data in more useful and compact form. Included in the appendixes are special precautions for gassy (methane atmospheres) tunnels and tunnels where petroleum products are encountered.

Because of the extreme interest in materials with high melting temperatures and the advantages offered over the powder route for making high-density material, arc-melting and centrifugal-casting methods were investigated for preparing shapes of hafnium carbide with and without excess carbon. Highly satisfactory equipment was constructed and efficient operating procedures were established. Also, methods for preparing consumable electrodes and shrink-tolerant graphite molds were developed. Although crack-free hafnium carbide (6.3 weight-percent carbon) shapes were not made, coherent castings containing 9 to 13.5 weight-percent carbon were produced; the same compositions were shown to be resistant to thermal shock. Selected physical and chemical tests were performed on castings chosen for investigation by chemical and nondestructive inspection techniques. Electrical conductivity and thermal expansion measurements were made. Measurable oxidation of all the compositions studied was observed to start between 500° and 600° C. Attack by nitrogen, however, did not occur until temperatures exceeded 2,000° C. A linear relationship of the logarithm of the diamond pyramid hardness to the temperature was noted. Considerable scatter of the bend-rupture strengths at room temperature and of the tensile strengths up to 2,000° C was found. However, at the latter temperature and above, a definite relationship of strength to temperature was observed and some ductility was noted.

The recent concern for the recovery of even the finest fractions of coal preparation plant feeds has created needs for new equipment. Thermal dryers currently available have difficulty reducing the filter cake moisture on down to the desired point. This difficulty involves 1) the physical problem of handling this wet, sticky material and making each particle accessible to the hot gases, and 2) removing the extremely fine dried particles from the cooled gases. The dryer described in this paper handles the first of these problems, and eliminates the second by the substitution of steel balls for air as the heat transfer medium. As a general statement, the cost of preparing coal for market is inversely proportional to the size of the lumps or particles. In the not too distant past the finer sizes were discarded as being uneconomical to treat and this practice might be still continuing if it were not for the insistence of the public that this material be kept out of our streams. This being the only cost-free outlet, the disposal of fine refuse became a significant item of expense in every preparation plant. When this happened it was only reasonable to look to the recovery of the values in this material, not only to defray this expense, but to reduce the tonnage which had to be wasted. There seemed to be no device available suited to reducing the moisture in this material to what the market requires. All of the fine coal dryers commonly employed make use of air to bring the heat of combustion into contact with the coal particles. Any device employing air as a heat transfer medium, has the following two strikes against it in attempting to handle 28 mesh by 0 filter cake: 1) It is practically impossible to bring the hot air into intimate contact with the enormous number of fine particles stuck together in the cake. 2) Even if this can be effected, it is impossible to remove the dried coal from the air. A wet scrubber must be employed, the discharge of which must go back to the filter and dryer as a circulating load of the most objectionable sort, being the extreme fines. Various compromises have been used to cope with the problem of drying this relatively small tonnage of high moisture coal. Often some of the dried coal is mixed back with the feed to the dryer in an attempt to make the mixture more handleable and more available to contact with the hot air than the filter cake alone would be. This may help to some extent with the first problem but it does nothing about the second and a dryer operated in this way has to be oversized. Sometimes the filter cake is mixed with a coarser fraction for the same reason. Here again, while this may make a mixture (the particles of which are more readily brought into contact with the hot air), the problem of getting the fine coal out of the air remains and a larger percentage of the total coal to be dried is handled by the most expensive means. Mechanical dewatering has accounted for more and more of total coal drying lately and in many cases would satisfactorily handle the whole load, down to 28 mesh, if there were a means available for doing a good job on the —28 mesh by itself. The dryer which is the subject of this paper was designed expressly for doing this job — drying fine material by itself regardless of how wet it may be to start with, how fine it may be, or how gummy and sticky these properties in combination may make it. One of the most persistent topics at technical gatherings and in the recent scientific press has been the reduction of iron ore. To cite some of them, in May 1960, a symposium on the subject was sponsored by the Electrochemical Society. The proceedings, comprising two dozen papers, were later published.3/ More recently, November 1966, a similar gathering took place at Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Mich. The latest meeting was the International Congress on Production and Utilization of Reduced Materials, Evian, France, May 1967. If the volume of literature, symposia and conferences is a measure of industry concern, then current interest must be at a high level. To the casual observer of the metallurgical scene, the abiding and recurring attention to iron ore reduction outside the blast furnace must be somewhat puzzling in that so much research endeavor has resulted in so little commercial activity.

During fiscal year 1966 the Bureau of Mines published 99 scientific and technical papers and engaged in 67 research projects on petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. A basic appropriation of $3.4 million was supplemented by $1 million in cooperative funds from other Governmental agencies and industry groups. Petroleum conservation was advanced by development of scientific knowledge and improvement of technologic methods in both the extraction and utilization of petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. Experimental work was carried out at research centers in Bartlesville, Okla., and Laramie, Wo., and in laboratories in Morgantown, W. Va., and San Francisco, Calif. ACHIEVEMENTS IN FISCAL YEAR 1966 Bureau of Mines--Petroleum Research in fiscal year 1966 (July 1, 1965- June 30, 1966) was involved in many public issues--air pollution, peaceful uses of nuclear explosives, utilization of oil-shale resources, computerization of recovery-stimulation techniques, and fuels for supersonic airplanes. Scientific contributions included compositional studies of petroleum and oil shale, determination of thermodynamic properties of petroleum compounds, development of analytical techniques, and correlations of petroleum properties with geologic occurrence. Technologic advances included rock-fracturing research, in situ combustion studies, waterflood techniques, use of radio-tracers to study stability of petroleum fuels, and hydrogenation as a tool to prepare shale-oil products.

Rates oj decarburization of levilated Fe-C droplets conlaining 5.5 to 0 pct C have been measured at 1660°C. Gas mixtures of 1, 10, and 100 pct 0, with helium diluenl were used at velocities of 12.5 and 62.5 cm per sec. Rates were independent of carbon concentration in the mell and in good agreement with the calculated rule of oxygen diffusion through the gas boundary layer. The effects of flow rale and total pressure are as predicled and the rates are approxitnalely 2.5 times those with CO2 as oxidant. The mass-transfer correlation used incorporaled the efject of natural convection as well as forced conrection. Graphile spheres are shown to oxidize at the same rate as Fe-C droplets under the same experimental codlions. It is concluded that, for high carbon concentrations in the melt, the rate of- decarburizalion is controlled wholly by the rate of gaseous diffusion. Rate measurements with pure CO, are reported for low carbon concentrations where CO bubbles nucleate within the droplet. Under these circumstances the decarburi-zation decreased with carbon concentration and it is proposed that carbon diffusion is significant in conlrolling the decnvburization rate. In an earlier paper1 decarburization rate measurements were reported for levitated Fe-C alloys at 1660°C but with CO2 as the oxidant. The decarburization rate was found to be independent of carbon concentration in the melt but slightly affected by total pressure. The authors were unable to explain the slight pressure effect but in all other respects the results were consistent with control by diffusion in the gas boundary layer. Subsequent work has been directed at finding the reason for the slight pressure effect and whether the kinetics with oxygen as oxidant parallel those with CO2. Recently Ito and Sano2 have shown that with water vapor-argon atmospheres the decarburization rate is gaseous diffusion controlled until an oxide film appears on the surface. In this work the melts were contained in crucibles. MASS TRANSFER IN THE GAS PHASE In the earlier analysis1 only forced-convection mass transfer was considered. Subsequent recognition of the existence of some free-convection mass transfer explained the observed small effect of total pressure on the decarburization rate. Steinberger and Treybal3 and Kinard, Manning, and Manning4 have developed correlations involving the linear addition of the contribution of radial diffusion, free and forced convection. Steinberger and Treybal&apos;s correlation was chosen as the most applicable to the present work since it correlated most of the data available in the literature and handled the low Reynolds number region exceptionally well. The correlation for (Gr&apos;Sc) < 108 is where Nu&apos; is the Nusselt number for mass transfer based upon the total surface of a sphere in an infinite medium, G&apos; is the mean Grashof number for mass transfer defined by Eq. [2], Sc is the Schmidt number (µ/pDAB)f, Re is the sphere Reynolds number (dpu,pf/µf), p is the viscosity of the gas (poise), p is the density of the gas (g cm-3), Dab is the binary diffusivity for the system A-B (sq cm sec-&apos;), dp is the sphere diameter (cm), u is the approach velocity of the gas (cm sec-I), and subscript f denotes the property value is computed at the film temperature Tf defined by Tf = +1/2(To + Tr) where To is the specimen temperature and T, is the approach gas temperature (oK). Natural convection occurs when inhomogeneities exist in gas density. These may be caused by concentration gradients, temperature gradients, or both. In the present work the temperature gradient between the sphere and the bulk gas was very large and in some cases, for example the runs with pure oxygen, the concentration gradient was also appreciable. The solubility of sulfur and rate of solution of sulfur in pure Lron were measured in H2S + H2 and H2S + H2 H2O gas mixtures. The solubility and diffusivity of sulfur at 1410°Care 0.13 pet S and 1.0 x 10-5 sq cm per sec, respectively. The solubility iS the same, but the rate of sulfurization is slower in the presence of H2O in the reacting gas. Under these conditions, the over-all rate is controlled jointly by a slow surface reaction and by solid-state diffusion; the mechanism for the surface reaction has not been identified. KNOWLEDGE of the behavior of sulfur in solid iron is desirable for the metallurgy of such products as free machining steel, where a high sulfur level is required, and inclusion-free high-strength steels, where the sulfur specifications are very low. The present investigation was undertaken to check previously reported values for sulfur solubility and diffusivity in 6 iron, and to study the poisoning effect of chemisorbed oxygen on sulfurization kinetics in H2-H2S-H2O gas mixtures. All of the experiments were performed at 1410°C. The thermodynamic behavior of sulfur in 6 iron was the subject of a paper by Rosenqvist and Dunicz.&apos; The sulfur solubility at 1400" and 1500°C was determined by equilibrating pure iron specimens with H2-H2S gas mixtures. The maximum solubility of sulfur in 6 iron was alsc determined by Barloga, Bock, and parlee2 by reacting iron wires with sulfur in sealed capsules. In another investigation, the diffusion coefficient of sulfur in 6 iron at temperatures up to 1450°C was measured by Seibel.3 The method used was to measure sulfur concentration profiles in diffusion couples containing radioactive sulfur EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. A vertical resistance furnace wound with molybdenum wire and containing a recrystallized alumina reaction rube was used for the experiments. The hot zone in the furnace was approximately 2 in. long with a temperature variation of ±3oC. The hot zone temperature was automatically controlled to within ±2°C, and the test temperature was measured with a pt/Pt-10 pet Rh thermocouple before and after each experiment. Flow rates of the reacting gases were obtained using capillary flow meters. Materials. The source of H2S in the gas train was a premixed cylinder containing 5 pet H2S in H2. This mixture then was diluted with additional hydrogen and argon. In some experiments, water vapor was introduced by passing hydrogen and argon through a column containing 10 pet anhydrous oxalic acid and 90 pet oxalic acid dihydrate. The vapor pressure of water above this mixture is well-known.4 Argon was used as a diluent to minimize thermal segregation of H2S in the furnace5 and to reach higher H2O:H2 ratios than could be obtained in mixtures of H2 and H2S alone. Argon was purified by passage over copper chips at 350°C and subsequently over anhydrone. Hydrogen was purified by passage over platinized asbestos at 450°C and then over anhydrone. The H2-H2S mixture was purified by passage over platinized asbestos and then over P2O5. The specimen stock was made by melting and vacuum-carbon deoxidizing electrolytic "Plastiron" in a zirconia crucible. The principal impurities are listed in Table I. In some of the equilibrium experiments, six-pass zone-refined iron was used to minimize impurity side effects. This zone-refined iron had a total impurity level of about 25 ppm. Procedure. Specimens were annealed in hydrogen for a period of at least 2 hr at the beginning of each experiment. The specimens were held in the reacting gas for times varying between 10 min and 17 hr, and cooled to room temperature in a water-cooled stainless-steel block at the bottom of the furnace. The pH2S/pH2 ratios reported are those for gas equilibrium at 1410°C. Calculations based on available thermodynamic data8 showed that the only other gaseous8 species that formed in significant amounts in the furnace were S2 and S. Even when water vapor was introduced into the gas mixture, the concentrations of SO2, SO, and so forth, were negligible. The amount of liquid retained in a porous bed is determined by weighing a column containing the bed.The column is attached to the free end of a cantilevered beam, and changes in weight are determined by calibrated strain gauges (which form a resistance bridge) attached near the fixed cnd of the beam. By coupling the output from the strain gauges to an amplifier and a recorder, a continuous record of changes in the drainage characteristics of the bed may be obtained.

The oxidation of Ni-3 to 25 wt pd Al alloys has been studied in 0. 1 atm of oxygen at temperatures between 900° and 1300°C. These alloys have been found to oxidize by three different mechanisms which depend on the temperature of- oxidation and the alloy composition. Two of the three mechanisms do not permit a continuous layer of Al,0, to be formed on the alloy surface and the oxidation rates are greater than that for pure nickel. The third mechanism results in the formation of an external A1203 scale and lke oxidation rates are about three orders of magnitude smaller than those for pure nickel. The minimum amount of aluminum required for the formation of external scales of A L,0, has been determined. NICKEL-base alloys are currently the main source of materials for use at elevated temperatures in gas turbine engines. These alloys are usually coated to obtain oxidation resistance. Coatings on nickel-base alloys are frequently formed by reaction of the alloy with aluminum whereby alloyed nickel aluminides are formed. The alloyed nickel aluminides provide protection to the nickel base alloy because external scales of A1203 (alumina) are formed during oxidation and mass transport through A120, is slow in comparison to mass transport through most other oxides. In view of the protective properties of A1203, it is important to know how much aluminum is required in these alloys in order to form external scales of AlzO,. The present paper is concerned with the oxidation kinetics and the oxidation mechanisms of Ni-A1 alloys and the minimum amount of aluminum required in these alloys for the formation of external scales of Alz03. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS When a Ni-A1 alloy is heated in oxygen at elevated temperatures, the following reactions can take place on the surface of the alloy where the oxide phases are assumed to be virtually pure: These oxide phases are in the form of nuclei scattered over the surface of the alloy and, in view of their rapid formation, they need not be in equilibrium with the alloy. As the oxidation process continues, equilibrium between the alloy surface and the oxide phases is approached and the stability of the oxide nuclei is determined by the composition of the alloy at the alloy/oxide interface because of the following reactions: 3NiA1204 + 2A1 (alloy) = 4AlzO3 + 3Ni (alloy) [41 4Ni0 + 2Al (alloy) = NiA120, + 3Ni (alloy) [ 5 1 Application of the mass-action law to Eqs. [4J and [5J yields the following equilibrium conditions for these reactions: where aA1 and aNi are the activities of aluminum and nickel, are the standard free energies of formation of NiO, A1203, and NA1204, respectively, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature. If the composition of the alloy at the alloy/oxide interface is such that (akl/ahi) is greater than the equilibrium values defined by Eqs. [6] and [7], then Reactions (41 and [5] will go to the right as written. Conversely, if the alloy composition is such that the activity ratio (aLl,/aki) at the alloy/oxide interface is less than the equilibrium values, then Reactions [4] and [5] will proceed to the left. The equilibrium activity ratios in Eqs. [6] and 171 can be calculated since values for the standard free energies of formation of the oxide phases are available. Standard free energies of formation for NiO and A1203 have been tabulated by Elliott and ~leiser.&apos; The standard free energy of formation for NiA1204 can be obtained from the data of Tretjakow and Schmalzried.&apos; The results of these calculations are tabulated in Table I. This report describes and discusses present-day leaching technology employed to recover copper from low-grade mine and dump materials derived from the exploitation of copper ore deposits in the Western United States. Illustrations of the integral parts of the leaching, precipitation, and recovery operations at several copper-producing companies are presented. Schematic drawings are included to present typical flowsheets of leaching and precipitation operations. Operational problems common to most copper leaching and precipitation plants are discussed. Areas of present and future research to improve leaching techniques are cited.

A primary amine extraction system was investigated for fractionating a cerium-group, lanthanide sulfate mixture. Addition of diethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid (DTPA) to the amine extraction system resulted in separation factors as high as 5.4 for lanthanum-cerium, 8.0 for cerium-praseodymium, 3.7 for praseodymium-neodymium, and 7.0 for neodymium-samarium. In multistage studies on a cerium-free lanthanide mixture, 96 percent of the lanthanum was recovered with a purity of 95 percent.
