The results of an extensive research and development program to reduce the noise generated during coal cutting are presented. The characteristics and magnitude of continuous miner coal cutting noise sources are defined. This work consisted of development of a simulated coal ,cam to facilitate above-ground coal cutting tests, noise measurements in a reverberant acoustic chamber during simulated mining operations of a continuous miner (cutting the simulated coal scam), and noise measurements in an underground coal mine during continuous miner operation. In-mine and laboratory test results were in excellent agreement for both A-weighted overall levels as well as A-weighted one-third octave band spectra. Methods to reduce coal cutting noise are presented. These methods take full advantage of the dynamic characteristics of the forces generated during coal cutting. Dynamic cutting force isolation was shown to be a very effective technique. Finally, a continuous miner was equipped with a cutter head that incorporated (among other design factors) cutting force isolation. Successful, lung term, in-mine use of the cutter head demonstrated coal cutting noise at the operator's station of less than 90 dBA and 50% coal, 50% rock cutting of less than 93 dBA.

Since 1975, about a dozen high capacity flotation plants have been installed in the Ruhr district. Depending on the size of the preparation plants, the design capacity of the flotation section is between 100 - 150 t/h. The flotation units generally comprise rougher and cleaner stages in which 5 to 6 or 4 to 5 agitators respectively are arranged in line. The unit volume allocated to each agitator is up to 16 m3. The type of flotation machines, the design of these plants and their instrumen¬tation and control equipment are described in detail. The run of mine coal in the Ruhr district is characterized by a wide variety of the volatile matter. Generally, a distinction must be made between coals with more than 30 - 35% V.M., which are preferably used in power station, and coal with lower V.M. content, which are preferably used as coke-oven feed. The difference between these coals in respect to grain-size distribution, ash cotent and flotation properties will also be described in detail.

"Cominco's Polaris Mine is a lead-zinc underground operation that began commercial production in early 1982. The mine site is located on Little Cornwallis Island in the Canadian Arctic at a latitude of 75°23'N and at a longitude of 96°55'W. The nearest settlement, Resolute Bay, some 100 kilometres southeasterly from the mine, is accessed from the mine by light aircraft. The mine site can be accessed by sea during the six-week ice-free period each year. During this time all major operating supplies are brought to the mine and the lead and zinc concentrate products are shipped out to market.GeologyThe Polaris orebody lies near the top of the Thumb Mountain Formation of Ordovician age. This formation is a relatively homogeneous section of thin to medium bedded limestones which are brecciated and dolomitized in the area around the orebody. The deposit is described as a Mississippi Valley-type orebody. Ore minerals are sphalerite and galena with the waste being predominantly dolomite with calcite and marcasite. The ore is quite porous with voids being generally filled with ice as the mineralized zone lies entirely within permafrost. Reserves consist of about twenty million tonnes of ore grading 3.8% Pb and 14.3% Zn with a further three million tonnes of inferred ore at a slightly lower grade.The orebody strikes in a north-south direction with the hangingwall dipping at about twenty degrees to the east. It is generally conformable with the stratigraphy. The footwall in the western portion of the orebody, the Panhandle, lies about 10 to 30 metres below the hangingwall. To the east the footwall drops sharply, creating an orebody height of up to 110 metres in what is referred to as the Keel Zone. The Panhandle Zone has typically 80 - 110 metres of cover above the hangingwall , About 25% of the reserves are in the Panhandle Zone, the remainder being in the Keel Zone. Figure I illustrates a plan view of the orebody relative to other surface facilities on the property and Figure 2 illustrates a simplified section through the Panhandle and Keel Zones."

The performance of the world economy improved significantly in 1984. Real world output!/ grew 4.3% (compared with 2.6% in 19831, the highest since the 4.4% increase recorded in 1978 (table 1). The output of industrial nations rose 4.9%, while that of the developing nations rose 3.7%. The United States and Japan had the largest increases in output of the major industrial nations, with respective increases of 6.8% and 5.8% (table 2). The components of real output with the most significant growth in the industrial countries were gross fixed investment (9.2%), consumer expenditure (3.1%), and public consumption (2.5%) (table 1). Industrial output, as measured by industrial production indices, has returned to about the 1980 level for most of the major industrial nations (table 2). Exceptions to this were industrial production in Japan and the United States; Japan's industrial production rose steadily throughout the 5-yr period and is now more than 16% above the 1980 level, and the industrial production index for the United States reached 11 1.2 (1980=100.0). Real total domestic demand grew at 8.7% in the United States, more than double the rate of Japan, which, at 4.0%, had the second-largest growth. Average demand for all industrial countries was up 5.1%. During 1984 the U.S. dollar showed great strength on international markets, contributing to large current-dollar negative net exports of goods and services and even larger negative net exports of the merchandise sector. While growing U.S. imports helped spread the benefits of the recovery, they also led to a widening of current account imbalances and growing trade tensions throughout the world.3/, 4/

The copper segregation process is designed to concentrate oxidized copper ores or mixed sulfide-oxide copper ores which are refractory to normal and cheaper mineral dressing or leaching processes. Such ores contain copper silicates or highly disseminated copper minerals in a gangue not entirely free from limestone or dolomite. Concentra¬tion by flotation is, under these circumstances, not possible and the acid-consuming constituents do not permit acid leaching. A high temperature treatment at 700-800°C, in the presence of a small amount of sodium chloride and of finely divided carbon, concentrates the copper into easily floated metal by a kind of reducing chloridizing roast. The sulfides, if present, are either oxidized in the heating stage and react like oxides or float with the metallic copper in the flotation step. The ores which have the aforementioned characteristics and which are high grade enough to pay for the treatment are scarce, so that the process has only a limited application. Theory of Copper Segregation Sodium chloride, reacting with water vapor and the acid gangue constituents, produces hydrogen chloride which reacts with the copper minerals. The copper is volatilized as cuprous chloride and immedi¬ately reduced on the coal particles by hydrogen emanating from the volatile matter of the coal and from the water-gas reaction. Introduction Alumina (aluminum oxide) is the material from which all the world's aluminum is produced. In the Western World, all the alumina is made from bauxite by the Bayer process. In the nearly 150 years since aluminum was first isolated by Oersted, the metal has grown from a laboratory curiosity to a position of major importance in the world's commerce. In terms of annual production rates aluminum is first among nonferrous metals. Oersted's discovery-reduction of aluminum chloride with potas¬sium amalgam-was improved on by Ste. Claire Deville, whose so¬dium amalgam reduction of aluminum chloride led to the commercial production of aluminum in France in 1855. Ste. Claire Deville's method prevailed until 1886 when Charles Martin Hall and Paul T. Heroult each invented a process for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite. The inven¬tion by Karl Josef Bayer in 1888 of an economical process for making very pure aluminum oxide (alumina) from bauxite established the necessary link between known ores and the Hall-Heroult reduction process. Bayer's work completed the scientific base-the ore bauxite refined to alumina by the Bayer process (U.S. Patent No. 515,895), the alumina reduced to aluminum in the Hall-Heroult cell (U.S. Patent No. 400,766--upon which today's aluminum industry is founded. Small-scale production of aluminum in the U.S. began in 1888 utilizing the Hall cell. By 1903, bauxite properties and a Bayer process refining step had been incorporated into the production activities. On this base the aluminum industry in the U.S. has grown at an annual compounded rate of 15%. Since 1946 the annual growth rate has been 10%.1 The rapid growth of the industry is the result of many factors among which are the existence of widespread bauxite ore deposits; a sound and economic production technology; and the properties of the metal-lightness, strength, ductility, good electrical and heat con¬ductivity, and pleasing appearance, which lead to ever greater de¬mands for aluminum in an industrializing society. At the inception of the industry, the only market that could be found for aluminum was in the production of cooking utensils. How¬ ever, the rapidly accelerating industrial and technological development of the Western World soon created new needs for aluminum, and today aluminum is marketed in a broad range of industrial, commer¬cial, and consumer applications. The principal uses for aluminum are:' building and construction, 22%; transportation, 18%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 11%; consumer durables, 10%; machinery and equipment, 7%; other, 19%. The 1974 production of primary alumi¬num in the world was 14.5 million short tons, which at an approximate ingot price of 40¢ per lb puts a value of $11.6 billion on the industry product prior to fabrication. While aluminum is widely distributed in the earth's crust and is a major constituent of many rocks and soils, to date no method of extraction of aluminum from such nonbauxite material has been brought to commercial practice in the Western World. In the USSR alumina is produced by the complex processing of nepheline syenite, but elsewhere all commercial production of alumina is from bauxite. A brief discussion of recent developments and other processes for alumina is included in the subsection "Other Processes for Alumina," page 19-15. In early 1973, a major U.S. aluminum producer announced the successful development of processes for the production of aluminum from aluminum chloride. This achievement promises to exert a major influence on the future of the aluminum industry. In the initial com¬mercial application of this new technology, Bayer alumina will be chlorinated, and the aluminum chloride then reduced by electrolysis. Important claims for the new processes are lower energy requirements (one-third less than obtainable in Hall cells) and reduced labor costs. Capital costs are said to be no greater than for conventional plants. While the announced intention is to produce the aluminum chlo¬ride from Bayer process alumina, the new chloride reduction process will eliminate the other raw materials, carbon and fluorides, required by the conventional Hall cells. The electrodes in the chloride cell will not be consumed on the reduction process and the electrolyte will have, as the name indicates, a chloride rather than a fluoride base. 2. Bauxite Definition and Origin. Bauxite is a naturally occurring raw material composed principally of a mixture of one or more of the hy¬drated aluminum oxide minerals gibbsite (Al2O2 3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3 H2O), and diaspore (Al2O, - H2O), and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other various elements in trace amounts. It is an end or near-end product of chemical weathering. Depending on the amount of iron impurities, the color of bauxite varies from dark red and brown to pink to white. Some bauxite is finely divided, free digging earthy material, while other forms are dense and rocky, requiring explosives in mining. Many gradational forms exist. It is one of the most variable of mineral raw materials in chemical composition and physical appearance. It is generally believed that bauxite deposits resulted from intense chemical weathering of aluminum-bearing rocks or formations under tropical or subtropical conditions with alternating wet and dry sea¬sons. Topographic conditions were favorable for drainage and the in-situ accumulation of aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides. There was low to moderate topographic relief with a minimum of erosion during long quiet periods in earth history.2 The occurrence of bauxite is widespread and it has been found on all continents except Antarctica. Production was reported from 27 countries in 1974, at which time total world production was over 79 million metric tons. Of this production 76% was from seven coun¬tries-Australia, Jamaica, Surinam, Guinea, USSR, Guyana, and Greece-which ranked in that order of production. The society in which we live is one of change, and we professionals are part of that society. The importance of this simple and obvious statement is often overlooked. My Presidential Address examines the question: can professionalism survive in our changing society?There is ample evidence to show that our society is changing, and that the rate of change is exponential. This rapid and accelerating rate of change is what Alvin Tomer refers to as "future shock". Rapid change means that we do not have time to become accustomed to what is happening around us and to feel comfortable with it; the greater the rate of change the greater the discomfort. The effect that this has on people is varied; the change may be either expected or totally unexpected.The rate and extent of change in society is not the same for all countries nor for all industries or occupations. Change is more rapid in Japan, Korea or Taiwan, than in Australia. It is more rapid in our cities than in the bush, more rapid for professional businessmen than for farmers. In our minerals and petroleum industries, we are still adjusting to the great changes that have taken place over the last fifteen years. In the past, products from our industries were sold on a free and open market. Today, mineral development and production in most undeveloped countries and some developed countries is manipulated for political, social and economic reasons. Changes of this nature have had a devastating effect on the operations of established mineral producers in the democracies.Because of the accelerating nature of change, we must recognise that the past is not a reliable guide to the future.Although extrapolation of the past into the future is a basic ingredient of commercial survival, extrapolation is less and less reliable.I borrow from others in quoting the Irish proverb: "The future is not what it was".The future is where our business lies and most of us at this Conference must endeavour to understand it and adjust to it. I believe in the old adage that:You can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been and where you are at.There are a number of major factors which have created change within our social, economic, and industrial environment in recent years.

It was the goal of this project to develop training materials specific to two areas of the mining industry: (1) safe use and care of the self-contained self-rescuers, and (2) awareness and avoidance of electrical hazards. This report describes the development of the following training material: Instructor's modules for the OCENCO EBA 6.5, CSE AU-9A1, and PASS 700E self-contained self-rescuers; and a textbook, slide tapes, and accident case study scenarios for mine electricity, and a computer based instructional package on mine electricity and electrical hazards. The report concludes that additional efforts are needed in mine training and four recommendations are made: (a) tailor existing materials to fit specific mine sites, (b) develop and evaluate computer based instructional material, (c) develop parallel training materials for metal and non-metal mines and, (d) develop additional training materials for preparation plants and surface areas of underground mines.

Technology for the preparation of densifiable sulfur concrete (sulfapave) materials has been devised by the Bureau of Mines. The materials are intended as new construction materials for use in corrosive areas where conventional materials fail. A series of modified sulfur cements were developed, which can be used in combination with dense-graded aggregates to prepare sulfapave materials with excellent corrosion-resistant properties. The materials can be mixed, laid, and compacted into place with conventional hot-mix asphalt pavi.ng equipment. Mixture designs utilizing 5-to 30-pct-modified sulfur cements and dense-graded aggregates gave material properties ranging from rigid to flexible. Laboratory corrosion tests in sulfuric acid showed no material loss or deterioration of physical properties over a 1-year test period in concentrations ranging from 0 to 60 pct at ambient temperatures. Preliminary results on field testing the materials for durability to weathering, corrosion, and traffic have been excellent, with no evidence of failure in the materials.

Coal/pyrite fines were froth floated in a laboratory cell to examine the rate of pyrite recovery during conventional coal flotation. The effects of collector, particle size and carbon to total sulfur ratio on the kinetics of recovery were investigated. These data coupled with microscopic examination suggest that miniscule amounts of coal that remain attached to the pyrite surface affect the rate of flotation of pyrite.

The Bureau of Mines devised a technique to recover a Zn-Pb concen-trate from a geothermal brine. More than 99 pct of the Zn and Ph was precipitated by treating the brine with H2S and controlling the pH with lime. Recycle of the sulfide precipitates increased crystal size and resulted in easily filterable products. A typical sulfide precipitate contained 53 pct ZnS, 8 pet PbS, 24 pct MnS, and 15 pct FeS. Addition of sulfide as FeS or CaS was not effective in precipitating Zn and Pb, but Zn in the brine was selectively removed with a strongly basic ion-exchange resin. A proposed flowsheet for metals recovery is discussed.

The Bureau of Mines, Foster-Miller Inc., and Beaver Creek Coal Co. have evaluated the ability of a new system to ventilate a 40-ft-deep cut. A remote-control continuous-mining machine, in a 7-ft-thick seam, with exhausting brattice was fitted with an improved sprayfan system plus additional forward and reverse pointing sprays. Static and dynamic tests using tracer gas were conducted in a full-scale model and under-ground to measure the effectiveness of exhaust face ventilation for various deep-cutting mine and spray configurations. When compared to a lO-ft primary ventilation brattice, the extended-cut spray system consistently provided better face ventilation at all configurations up to and including a 40-ft brattice setback. The system also provided good dust protection and visibility for the machine operator. Another safety advantage is the elimination of the need to set temporary roof supports to maintain the ventilation brattice.

I'm glad this meeting is being held in New York. First, because the city is close to my home in New Jersey, only 35 minutes from Times Square ..... if I were to come to Times Square between two and three in the morning. Otherwise it takes two hours. But even more important is the fact that all of you good people from around the country and around the world will enjoy the unique experience of that warm friendly atmosphere in the greater metropolitan area, something that you won't see any place else on the face of the earth. Seriously, the greater metropolitan area has been a large part of my industrial, cultural and spiritual experience. There are many aspects of it which I find disagreeable but on net I would rather live in this area, at least for the time being, than any other area of the United States. As a consultant I find contact with financial institutions, corporate headquarters, information sources and a great many production and research facilities a valuable asset to my activity.

"Manufacturing of Jaw CrushersOriginIn 1858 Eli Whitney Blake invented the first successful mechanical rock breaker-the Blake-type jaw crusher. Blake adapted a mechanical principal, the powerful toggle linkage system used to transform rotating motion and energy into oscillating mot ion and tremendous compressive forces. Today these same principals apply and the basic Blake-type jaw crusher is one of the leading machines of its class for heavy duty primary crushing service.In 1881 Philetus W. Gates patented a design for a crusher, the forerunner of the modern gyratory crusher which dominated the field from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. In 1910 the largest gyratory crushers built had 48-inch openings. However, about this time the jaw crusher came to life when the Power and Mining Machinery Co. built an even larger sized opening crusher-a giant 84-inch by 60-inch jaw crusher for a trap rock quarry in Pennsylvania. A 24-inch gyratory crusher became the ideal sized secondary machine for this size jaw. From that time on jaw crushers were looked on favourably as primary breakers and lines were brought up to date to parallel the already developed gyratory lines.FunctionMost heavy duty Blake-type jaw crushers work basically the same way. They are ruggedly designed and capable of crushing material in some cases in excess of 80, 000 p.s.i. compressive strength. They are very simple machines with few moving part s and, with the exception of replacement of renewable parts, are relatively maintenance free. It is quite common to have these machines in product ion for 20 to 30 years. The following will de scribe how these machines work. Large-diameter high-inertia flywheels which are connected to the main eccentric shaft, rotate inside a connecting rod type mechanism called a Pitman. It transforms rotating motion into vertical oscillating motion. This vertical motion is in turn transformed into reciprocating mot ion by means of a system of 2 toggles, each connected to the Pitman. The rear toggle is connected to the fixed rear head, and the front toggle is connected to the swing jaw which is hinged at the top of the crusher. With each rotation of the eccentric shaft the swing jaw opens and closes on rock which is fed into the crusher chamber, crushing the rock in a series of bites. These bites, or strokes as the y are called, usually vary between 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inch at speeds of 120 to 200 strokes per minute. The reduction ratio of feed input to discharge is usually about 8 to I. Output capacities can vary from 100 tons/hour to 1200 tons/hour depending on the size of machine and its discharge opening. Horsepower requirements can vary from 75 hp to 400 hp.The entire crusher chamber is lined with replaceable 14070 manganese steel liner plates. This material is ideally suited for the job since it hardens as it wears during crusher operation. Manganese is also used in the high wear areas at each end of the toggle plates."

"What is past is prologue" - motto of National Archives The question of past, present, and future safety performance in the coal mining industry is not merely an academic one, or one which arises from soul-searching curiosity. It is a question involving pragmatic ramifications, and the answers, or perhaps the public perception of the answers, will have a strong impact on the public policies which influence the course of meeting the Nation's future energy demands. Those of us in the coal industry are keenly aware of the significant impact of the public reaction -- in the form of the 1969 Health and Safety Act -- to -past performance of the coal industry which it found unacceptable. That Act was revolutionary -- and it was expensive. But in finding the industry's past performance unacceptable, the public also recognized its own contributory role through having enjoyed a "buyer's market" forced on a highly competitive industry. One result was to limit the industry's resources and restrict its ability for self-improvement of its safety performance. In acknowledgement of that role, the public picked up the tab for Black Lung disability incurred prior to that time.

The U.S. economy continued to grow moderately in the third quarter, but at a slightly higher rate than in the previous quarter. According to the Department of Commerce's preliminary estimate, real gross national product (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.3% during the third quarter of 1985, compared with a revised 1.9% for the second quarter and 1.6% for the third quarter of 1984 (table 1). Civilian unemployment dropped from the constant 7.3% rate between February and July to 7.0% in August and 7.1% in September. Employment on nonagricultural payrolls continued to increase (table 2), resulting in a continued rise in personal income, which in turn supported growing consumer purchases. Although purchases of services continued to provide the underlying foundation for the economic growth, the manufacturing sector received additional stimulus from significant increases in consumer purchases of durable goods, particularly automobiles. The increased demand for durable goods resulted in significantly higher industrial production for August and September, compared with levels attained previously this year (table 3). Capacity utilization increased to 80.5% in August but returned to 80.2% in September, matching the 1985 low previously reached in July (table 4). The real net export deficit grew only $0.2 billion in the third quarter; at $34.0 billion, however, it continued to exert a negative influence on the economy. On September 22, in an effort to reduce the deficit and make U.S. goods more competitive on world markets, the U.S. Government agreed to cooperate with the Governments of France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom in attempting to lower the-value of the dollar in relation to other world currencies. Low inventories, rising factory orders and construction spending, the possibility of a lower U.S. dollar, and aggressive automobile production plans announced by domestic producers for the fourth quarter indicate the potential for an increase in manufacturing activity in the United States.

"Hat Creek coal was treated by the liquid solvent extraction process in a continuous plant at the U.K. National Coal Board Coal Research Establishment.Extraction levels of over 80 per cent dry-mineral-matter-free (dmmf) coal were achieved.Total light oil yield was around 47 per cent of the dmmf coal. The light oil was shown to be a good feedstock for secondary refining into gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel.In spite of the high mineral matter content of the coal the solid residue was successfully removed from the coal extract by filtration.IntroductionBritish Columbia Hydro (BCH) and the National Coal Board of Great Britain (NCB) undertook a joint project to test the Hat Creek coal from British Columbia in the NCB's coal liquefaction process designed to produce transport fuels and feedstocks for the chemical industry by the liquid solvent extraction of coal(1), In this process most of the coal is dissolved in an aromatic solvent and the residual solids consisting of mineral matter and undissolved coal are removed by filtration. The resultant coal extract solution is fed to a hydrocracker for conversion to light liquid products and a fraction suitable for recycling as solvent. The light liquid products can be converted to gasoline and diesel fuel in a secondary refining stage.The dissolution of the coal is effected by heat-treating a slurry at a temperature in the region of 400°C which causes some bonds in the coal to rupture with the formation of radicals(2,3). These radicals are stabilized by hydrogen transfer from the hydroaromatic groups in the solvent, resulting in a reduction in the molecular weight of the coal. In the absence of donor groups the radicals combine to form an insoluble high molecular weight product(4). From studies of the kinetics of these reactions it has been shown that the formation and stabilization of the radicals is rapid at temperatures around 400°C(2,3). The dissolution of the depolymerizing coal is, however, relatively slow and the need to ensure complete dissolution in order to achieve a high extraction restricts the selection of digestion time(5). Further, it is important that digests do not contain depolymerizing coal as it may re-form under the applied stress in the filter cake inhibiting flow through the bed and resulting in low filtration rates(6).Thus, in practice relatively long digestion times are generally required in order to ensure complete dissolution of the depolymerizing coal, while it is also important to avoid depletion of the hydrogen donor groups in the solvent which would lower the rate of hydrogen donation to the coal and thus reduce the extraction yield and adversely affect the filtration(7). Clearly it is desirable to optimize the digestion time and temperature with regard to the extraction yield and filtration properties.The precise control of the distribution of products from the hydro-cracker is important for the composition of the recycle process solvent. The principal functions of the solvent are to provide a source of donatable hydrogen and a vehicle for the dissolution of the depolymerizing coal. Hydrogen transfer from the solvent, achieved by the conversion of hydroaromatic to aromatic groups, stabilizes the radicals formed by thermal cleavage of some of the bonds in the coal resulting in a progressive reduction in the size of the coal molecules(8,9) and dissolution in the solvent. The combination of radicals would result in the formation of insoluble material and a reduced extraction yield of the coal(4). Thus to achieve a high extraction yield the solvent should contain sufficient hydrogen donor groups to prevent extensive radical combination. The composition of the solvent should also be controlled to allow dissolution of the depolymerizing coal and to prevent precipitation of this material during the subsequent processing of the coal digest and extract solution. Belt conveyor systems, long the standard transportation technique in soft-rock open-pit applications, are encountering growing interest in the hard-rock open-pit sector as economic factors force companies to seek an alternative to costly truck haulage. A general review of mine conveyor systems is followed by detailed analysis of the mobile and semi-mobile in-pit crushing plant essential to successful use of mine conveyors. A final section presents case studies of three crusher-conveyor systems handling overburden, copper ore and granite.
