The U.S. Bureau of Mines determined the effect of common sulfide minerals on the corrosion rates of various types of ferrous alloy grinding media. Data obtained from this study will aid in determining the contribution of any electrochemical reactions between sulfide minerals and grinding media to the total grinding media consumption. Common sulfide minerals used in this study were chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite. In the presence of oxygen, chalcopyrite was found to increase the corrosion rate, galena was found to decrease the corrosion rate, and the effect of sphalerite was dependent upon the type of grinding media. Possible electrochemical reactions of these minerals in the presence of grinding media are suggested.

The slags generated during gasification of petroleum coke are heterogeneous and con-sist of many different phases. These phases are important because their physical properties affect the operability of gasifiers and because they concentrate many elements that are present in the petroleum coke feed in only minor to trace quantities. An understanding of the chemistry and physical nature of these slag phases is necessary to predict behavior in the gasifier and in considering the ultimate use or disposal of the materials. Slags typically consist of silicate glasses, calcium-silicates, free iron-nickel metallic phases, iron sulfides, and aluminum oxide spinels enriched in iron, chromium, and vanadium. The partitioning of elements among these phases has been analyzed and will be discussed.

Filter Presses are used in a wide range of process industries where high quality filtration at elevated pressure is required. This is mainly due to the fact that modern presses are fitted with polypropylene filter plates which combine excellent corrosion resistance with high mechanical strength. Filtration pressures of 15 Bar at ambient temperatures are common ensuring low residual moisture content and easily manageable filter cakes. Recessed polypropylene chamber plates have been in use for the last 15-20 years and have replaced plates and frames almost entirely. The latest development in plate technology is the polypropylene membrane plate. These provide lower moisture content cakes at significantly higher capacity than recessed chamber plates. Because of their stayboss-free construction, membrane plates provide excellent cake washing facilities which make them suitable for a wide range of process applications. Membrane plates are available both as fixed and exchangeable membrane types. Overhung membranes can be fitted to existing plates manufactured in cast iron or plastic to enhance the performance of existing presses.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated synthetic fluorspar as a substitute for natural fluorspar flux in basic cupola ironmaking. The synthetic fluor-spars tested were prepared from waste fluosilicic acid generated during the processing of fluorapatite ore. The cupola trials showed the synthetic products to be the equivalent of natural fluorspar from an operational standpoint. However, wet scrubber sampling showed that substantial losses of volatilized fluorine occurred from the cupola during operation. The losses during synthetic fluorspar trials considerably exceeded those from natural fluorspar trials. Laboratory viscosity testing, using a high-temperature rotational viscometer, confirmed this finding and indicated that fluorspar volatility in slags is related to slag basicity. Synthetic fluorspar is accordingly recommended more for highly basic cupola operation (>1.3 basicity) than for neutral or acid operation, because of the increased potential for pollution and baghouse filter detezioration"

This is the seventh annual tabulation of royalty information. It is also the first year in which some data have been deleted to make room for new data. The concept of royalties evolved from a time when the government owned all of the land, including mines, to the situation where free miners won the right to claim minerals but paid a portion of their production to the royal treasury. Today, a mineral royalty is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights for the privilege of producing the mineral commodity. However, some people incorrectly believe that the selling price and the royalty are the same thing. The contract between the owner (lessor) and the mining company (lessee) is the mineral lease. Some clauses that are common to mineral leases include: identification of property, granting clause, reservations, definitions, royalty rate, taxes and title, indemnity, termination, inspection, assignability, successors, and reclamation. There often are variations in royalty rates for a given commodity that reflect differences in location, quality, market conditions or public versus private ownership. History In the time of ancient Rome, the government owned the mining properties by virtue of conquest. It would lease the mines to favored citizens who would pay rent to the State. Various conditions of sovereign ownership of both land and mineral rights continued in Europe until the Renaissance. As the laws evolved for land ownership by private citizens, the concept that minerals belonged to the State (King, Crown, sovereign) continued until about the 15th century. Free miners challenged the notion of sovereign ownership and won the right to discover and claim minerals. But a portion of their production had to be paid to the sovereign - a royalty. So, the original concept of a mineral royalty was a tax on production that was due to the Crown or Church. The term mineral royalty, as it is known today, is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights (formerly the royal owner) for the privilege of mining and producing the mineral commodity. The owner of the mineral rights, the lessor, and the mine operator, the lessee, enter into an agreement to mine the property. The agreement is the lease. While this concept is common, there are some who do not understand that the royalty is a portion of production paid to the owner as agreed on in the lease document. This author has seen reports where the selling price of a commodity has been quoted as the royalty. ("They get 70 cents a ton royalty at their pit and the guy down the road only has a 65 cent royalty.") These reports have been authored by people not familiar with the mining industry. Lease clauses In addition to the amount to be paid the lessor, there are several other items to be addressed in the lease agreement. The following list may not be all inclusive, but briefly describes most of the common clauses any good mining lease should contain. Identification: This opening clause names the owner (lessor) and the operator (lessee), the address of each, and gives the legal description of the property. Granting clause: This part of the lease gives the time period or duration of the agreement and information about renewal periods. It also has language about the exclusive right of the lessee to mine the property. Reservations: If the owner wants to exclude any portion of the property or set some specific conditions about the operation, there needs to be a clause that describes these reservations. Definitions: This section should address some of the technical terms that the lessor may find confusing - short tons versus cubic yards, dollars versus percentage of average selling price, any escalator indices such as consumer price index or producer price index, and material mined versus material sold. Royalty: This section spells out what the royalty rate will be, how often it will be paid, if there is an annual minimum, the pay dates, and how the records will be kept. This section also describes the conditions under which the lessee is exempt from the annual minimum - natural disasters, strikes, governmental actions, or other causes referred to as force majeure. Taxes and title: The lease needs to identify who is responsible for the property taxes, severance taxes (if applicable), and other taxes that relate to the mining activity - taxes on equipment, improvements, or stockpiles. This is a good place in the lease for the owner to certify his ownership of the property and its mineral rights and also certify that no other leases are in effect. The lessees may want language that allows them to pay mortgages or other debts on the property to keep their lease in effect. Indemnity: This portion of the lease identifies that the lessee assumes the risks for lessee's mining operation. Lessor should expect indemnification by the lessee through standard insur¬ance policies - workers compensation, liability and property damage. Termination: Both the lessor and lessee want language that will allow them to terminate the lease. Various methods of Applied Mineralogy were used for determining the nature and composition of products yielded by flotation tests for Maghara coal beneficiation. Coal samples obtained from the Sa fa mine in Northern Sinai, Egypt, were crushed, sieved, &apos;and <32 mesh size fraction was cleaned by froth flotation. Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of certain parameters on beneficiation of Maghara coal by flotation. The investigated factors included nature of frothing and/or collecting reagents, pH value of the medium, particle size distribution in the head sample, and pulp density of the coal slurry. The quality of head samples, coal concentrates, and tailing products were determined by chemical analysis, microscopic study, x-ray diffraction analysis, and occasionally by infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy.

Recent investigations located at least six major massive sulfide deposits (dimensions measured in tens to hundreds of meters) within a 50-km-long segment of Escanaba Trough, the sediment-covered axial valley of southern Gorda Ridge. The sediment fill is intercalated silt and sand turbidites and hemipelagic mud with a maximum thickness of 500 m. Several volcanic edifices, spaced at approximately 15-km intervals along the ridge axis, penetrate and locally breach the sediment. The largest sulfide deposits form mounds and ridges on the steep flanks of structurally unstable sediment-capped blocks that have been uplifted above the volcanic edifices; both sediment and sulfide deposits are undergoing rapid erosion and redeposition. Although hydrothermal activity appears to be absent at most sulfide fields, 220°C fluids are discharging from the tops of sulfide mounds near 41°00&apos;N lat, 127°31&apos;W long. Recent pillow lavas and sheetflows erupted onto the sediment-covered sea floor less than 500 m away from the active vent field. The massive sulfide deposits have compositional characteristics that differ from deposits formed on sediment-free spreading axes. The Escanaba Trough deposits include Fe- and Cu-rich, Zn- and Pb-poor massive sulfide mounds, polymetal (Zn-Fe-Pb-Cu-As-Ag-Sb-Sn) sulfide vent structures, abundant barite-rich chimneys, crusts, and sinter cones, and thermogenic petroleum in the sulfide and sediment. Silver nitrate solution is a very common product in hydrometallurgical processes involving the treatment of various silver bearing materials. Silver is recovered by electrolysis. The alternative method for the recovery of silver from aqueous solutions is the precipitation by hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure. A previous study by the authors revealed the feasibility of this technique for the silver ammine sulfate system. Further study showed different behavior for silver in the silver ammine nitrate system and a systematic study was initiated to establish the optimum conditions for the process. The study showed that the process can be controlled by (1) composition of the feed solution, (2) temperature and (3) hydrogen pressure. The recovered silver product was in the form of very fine powder.

Some operational difficulties have been encountered in the transfer of carbon-in-pulp technology to Australian conditions. Many gold mines? are located in remote and arid areas where the available ground water is highly saline. There is a gradual depletion of free milling oxidised gold ore reserves resulting in the necessity to treat deeper primary sulphide .deposits which can be refractory. Some near-surface ore-bodies and tailing dumps are contaminated by natural vegetative matter which can interfere with the adsorption of gold from the cyanided pulp,. Advances which have been? made include potable water conservation in elution, a new type of regeneration kiln, inter-stage screens, alternative leaching systems transportable carbon-in-pulp plants and efficient open-cut mining methods. Academic and applied research is well supported by government and industry and the results are normally rapidly disseminated and put into practice by the gold mining industry.

As much as 100% of the gold and 67% of the silver in a sulphur-bearing hydrometallurgical leach residue have been transferred to copper metal at copper smelting temperatures by dissolving the partially calcined residue in an iron-bearing slag maintained in equilibrium with the liquid copper metal and matte phases. The precious metals can then be recovered by conventional refining techniques. Copper can be recycled at least four times without any detrimental effects on gold and silver transfers and recoveries. Apparent copper recovery in the .process can be over 100% because of the copper content of the residue. Based on slag analys.es, the overal1 recovery of gold in the copper metal and matte phases varies from 94% to 100% under all conditions investigated. On the? same basis, silver recovery varies .from 9S% ?to 99% under optimum conditions, but is only 4S% to 73% under other, less attractive conditions. Unaccounted for silver losses of&apos; about 30% make it difficult to determine the major factors affecting ?silver transfer and recovery. A method for implementing the technology on a commercial scale at a Canadian copper/zinc smelter has been proposed. A preliminary economic assessment and comparison of the proposed pyrometallurgical process with conventional cyanidation indicates that either process is economically attractive for recovering gold and silver from leach residues. Although the capital costs are higher, the pyrometallurgical process is simpler, has higher recoveries, lower operating costs and no .potential environmental problems related to cyanide disposal.

The thermochemistry of the systems SCN-H2O, Au-SCN-H2O and Ag-SCN-H2O is discussed. Potential-pH diagrams at 25°C are drawn for each system considering several sets of concentrations of the species involved. The information provided by the potential-pH diagrams is.complemented by distribution curves for each series of gold and silver complexes with thiocyanate. The analysis includes comparisons between the thiocyanate systems and the analogous cyanide systems, pointing out analogies and differences between the leaching of gold and silver with thiocyanate and with cyanide. The possibility of using soluble oxidizing agents such as ferric ions, hydrogen peroxide and Caro&apos;s acid is evaluated. The thermodynamic data used in the calculations and the chemical reactions represented in the Pourbaix diagrams are all reported in three Appendices. The overall results indicate the thermodynamic conditions for gold and silver leaching by thiocyanate.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study was conducted in eastern Kentucky drift mines as part of an ongoing research program to characterize the outcrop barrier zone. "Hillseams" were identified as the dominant geologic cause of roof instability unique to the outcrop barrier zone, with many roof fall injuries and fatalities attributed to them. Hillseam is the eastern Kentucky miners term for weather-enlarged tension joints that occur in shallow mine overburden where surface slopes are steep. Hillseams are most conspicuous within 200 ft laterally of a coalbed outcrop and under 300 ft or less of overburden. Hillseams form by stress relief, and therefore tend to parallel topographic contours and ridges. They can intersect at various angles, especially under the nose of a ridge, and create massive blocks or wedges of roof prone to failure. Examples of hillseams are described in both outcrop and in coal mine roof to establish their geologic character and contribution to roof failure.

The cupellation of dore/lead bullion to recover precious metals is one of the oldest metallurgical processes known to man. In recent times this has been carried out in small reverberatory furnaces but the process suffers from a number of disadvantages. A new process has been developed at the Northfleet refinery of Britannia Refined Metals Ltd, which gives much improved performance. The process depends upon the injection of oxygen through a nitrogen shrouded lance at the bottom of the furnace. The lance is consumable and of unique design. Reaction rates are high giving short process time; fuel consumption is low; oxygen efficiency is high and dore recirculation is low. The new process has resulted in substantially lower operation costs.

Hydrometallurgical products are difficult to characterize because of their fine grain sizes, heterogeneity, often amorphous structures and water soluble or hydrated constituents. Such products are advantageously studied using complementary mineralogical techniques including >50, ore microscopy, SEM-EDX, electron microprobe analysis, selective leaching and wet chemical analysis to determine the phases and their morphologies, to identify specific element carriers, and to elucidate the chemical reactions occurring during the metallurgical process. Sample preparation is an important consideration for these materials. For extremely fine-grained particles, or soft and brittle products such as elemental sulphur, the study of loose powder mounts provides information not available from the examination of polished sections. To demonstrate the application of the various mineralogical techniques, commercial zinc roaster calcines and leach residues, copper refinery anodes and anode slimes, and laboratory bornite leach residues were examined in detail. The various sample preparation and mineralogical methods are presented, and the use of these complementary and practical mineralogical techniques to improve the understanding of a particular hydrometallurgical system is discussed.

The objective of this research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines was to determine the effects of AI additions on the sulfidation resistance of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys. A series of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys with and without -additions of 4 pet AI were tested in a wet S vapor atmosphere at 677 C. A study of the morphology and composition of corrosion scales indicated a different corrosion mechanism for AI-free alloys compared with AI-containing alloys. Aluminum-containing alloys formed a compact, tightly adherent layer at the metal-scale interface that reduced corrosion rates by a factor of 3 to 10 compared with that of AI-free alloys. The thin, adherent AI-containing scale limited inward diffusion of 0 and S to the base metal and outward diffusion of Ni from the base metal. Aluminum-containing alloys formed a three-layer scale in oxidizing-S environments, while AI-free alloys formed a less protective two-layer scale.

Extraction of gold and silver from two refractory concentrates using cyanide and bromine reagents was reported at the 12th International Precious Metal Conference (1). The objective of this paper is to present the gold extraction, recovery, and economics for two refractory concentrates using cyanide and bromine reagents. Gold extractions for cyanide leaching (24- 48 hours) and bromine leaching (6 hours) were the same and ranged from 94% to 96%. Gold recoveries from bromine pregnant solutions using carbon adsorption, ion exchange, solvent extraction, and zinc and aluminum precipitation methods, were better than 99.9%. A preliminary economic analysis indicates that chemical costs? for cyanidation and bromine process are $9.50 and $10.50, respectively per ton of calcine processed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines identified respirable dust sources and controls on four continuous auger mining sections, two with relatively low dust levels and two with high levels. Factors adversely affecting dust levels included auger equipment design, continuous haulage, and low seam height. Dust controls included ventilation practices and spray systems. Maximizing airflow seemed to reduce dust levels most. Air leakage and shock loss can be reduced by constructing stoppings with brushed-on mortar containing fiberglass and by keeping areas between curtains and ribs free from obstructions and storing equipment not essential for face activities in outby crosscuts. Curtain configuration, setback distance, and installation can also affect dust levels. Use of both blowing and exhausting curtains is the most effective configuration. Setbacks from the face should not exceed 15 ft. Installing brattice curtains at least 5.5 ft from ribs, when entries are 26 ft wide, minimizes velocity head. Installing curtains tightly against the mine roof and floor helps maintain a forward airflow movement in the center of the mine heading; curtain overlap can create a tighter seal. The wet-auger spray system also effectively controls dust, provided the mine is already exercising good ventilation practices.

"IntroductionEnvironmental pollution problems, caused by gases or effluents, by high noise levels or from air borne dust, are placing increasing demands of the operators, from statutory authorities, and from the general public, to adopt more stringent dust control measures. This requires that a successful plant dust control program be an integral part of any plant operation. While a successful environmental program is a key factor in maintaining productivity and good labour relations, anticipation of future environmental regulations during the plant design phase can avoid the high cost of plant upgrading, or dealing with pulmonary conditions in the work force in subsequent years.Particulate removal, conventionally called dust collection, involves the removal of coarse- and fine-particulates from the airstream. Although generally limited to that required for contro!Hng plant generated air emissions, particulate control equipment also has a wide application for air cleaning and filtration inside the plant, as well as for recovery of usable products.In the late 1950s and early 1960s the public became more concerned with the problems of air pollution. This increasing concern was stirred by an awareness of the extremes to which water pollution had progressed in many of the rivers and lakes, by increasing perception of air pollution as detected by visible smog and harsh chemical odors, by the alarming rate of increase of smog plagued cities and communities, and by specific incidents where ill health could be traced to specific episodes of air pollution. Particle size is perhaps the most important single factor affecting particulate control. Large particles (over 5 microns) constitute the major mass fraction of most sources of emission and economical control equipment dqes exist for their efficient control. However, while these larger particles frequently represent the source of soiling and unsightly smoke plumes, they are not a major health problem as they tend to settle relatively quickly, are more easily scrubbed from the atmosphere by rain, and are not able to penetrate the respiratory system. By far the most important form of particulate air pollution is the fine particulate, (below 3 microns) which is harmful to the pulmonary system. The adverse effects caused by this particulate matter on human health are for the most part related to injury to the surfaces of the respiratory system. Particulate material in the respiratory tract may produce injury itself, or it may act in conjunction with gases, altering their sites or their modes of action. A combination of particulates and gases may produce an effect that is greater than the sum of the effects caused by either individually (i.e. synergistic effect)."

"This article is based on a paper presented by Jim Scott at the 1988 annual convention of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. The paper suggests a number of factors that might be taken into account in negotiating royalty terms.IntroductionRoyal ties are a part of mining life in Canada. They are used by many kinds of individuals in many kind s of situations. Prospectors commonly take royalty interests back when they transfer claims to development companies. Mining companies disposing of undeveloped (or sometimes even developed) properties are often paid at least in part by royalties. Royalties are even used by institutional investors with no other connection with the resource industry.Such different royalty holders have different investment goals, different cash flow requirements, and different risk / return preferences. These differences have given rise to a number of different royalty types. These types range from the simplest cents-per-ton royalty (where the operator pays a royalty at a fixed rate per ton milled) to net smelter return or ""NSR"" royalties (where the royalty is based on a percentage of the operator&apos;s NSR) all the way to net profit interest or ""NPI"" royalties (where the royalty is based on the operator&apos;s bottom-line net profit),The fundamental difference between the many royalty types is in the risk / return relationship. The cents-per-ton royalty, for example, is relatively risk-free. Of the many economic factors which affect a mine, the only one which will affect the royalty holder is the amount of ore physically milled. On the other hand, the potential for significant gains under a cents-per-ton royalty is also very limited. The royalty holder will not share in any increases in the market price of the end product or any cost reductions achieved by the producer."
