The U.S. Bureau of Mines designed and constructed sensitive and coordination-free ground-fault relays (GFR's) for use on mine power systems. First, a list of GFR attributes for mine ac utilization applications was compiled. These practical guidelines specified design, construction, transient immunity, reliability, and operating criteria. The time-current characteristics of the ac and dc units, subsequently fabricated, were designed to be below the human electrocution threshold. The significant and highly variable capacitance of high-voltage distribution cables was found to preclude the sensing of ground currents in the milliampere range. However, the coordination-free system developed for high-voltage distribution should enhance safety by significantly decreasing response time to ground faults. Implementation of the sensitive GFR technology in the mining industry has the potential to eliminate the majority of injuries and nearly all the deaths resulting from contact with energized components.

Pelletizing studies were conducted to find ways of improving the metallurgical properties of acid and fluxed pellets. In acid pellets, melting temperature was controlled by the formation of low melting temperature fayalite during reduction. Formation of a permeable metallic shell during reduction allows diffusion of reducing gas to the pellet core, decreasing fayalite formation. With fluxed pellets, slag chemistry had the main influence on metallurgical properties. Mineralogical, chemical and structural transformations that occur during reduction were studied at various intervals for a number of Mesabi Range pellet types. Six pellet types were selected for further investigation based on significant differences in softening/melting characteristics. Retention of porosity in the metallic shell was found to be the overriding factor in determining softening/melting behavior.

Since the advent of explosives, people have been trying to mechanize the process of loading it into long, narrow holes. Automated loading frees manpower from the arduous task of charging granular, cartridged and slurry explosives. An unexpected bonus of the automation process has been the realization of some valuable side effects such as high throughputs which speed up the loading process and higher loading densities which enhance explosive performance and permit hole patterns to be expanded.

"INTRODOCTIONIn an earlier communication 1 from our laboratory it was reported that mechanical crushing of coal and quartz under normal air atmosphere generates of free radicals on the particle surfaces, and that these radicals decay with time, hence pointing to a higher toxicity of fresh dusts in relationship to pneumoconiosis and silicosis. More recently Fubini et al.2 have also reported the detection by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the formation of SiO. and Si-type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. In agreement with earlier ESR studies on single crystals of quartz crushed under high vacuum ( -10-10 torr>3 and subsequent exposure to air,3 and to other gases,4 these radicals were identified2 as being formed by the homolytic cleavage of the Si-0-Si bonds and the reactions of the Si• and SiO- radical with atmosphere. Fubini et al.2 also suggested that these radicals might be involved in the mechanism of the fibrotic action by silica, either by transforming the particle surface into a selective oxidating agent or as an initiator of a sequence of reactions leading to fibrosis. Earlier Gabor and Anca5 bad reported that lipid ·peroxidation caused by free radicals on the silica surface might be involved in the red blood cell membrane damage. Thus far, however, no parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 studies on a given quartz dust sample have been reported, except for some earlier work from our laboratory.1·6·7 We now present more recent results obtained from parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 measurements on a freshly made quartz dust. The dust's free radica1 content was measured using ESR spectroscopy while its cytotoxicity potential was estimated via hemolysis. Hemolysis was employed as the toxicity test because it is a widely used method for estimating the potential of a dust for disrupting the cell membrane. 8 The fibrotic potential was followed by measuring the dust-induced lipid peroxidation, using linoleic acid as a model lipid. As discussed below, the results obtained suggest new clues to the mechanism of the quartzrelated cytotoxicity and fibrogenicity. MATERIALS AND METHODSReagentsCrystalline quartz particles with a size range of 0.2-2.5 mm were obtained from the Generic Respirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. These particles were crushed in air to obtain quartz dust samples with particle sizes smaller than 20 microns. We chose to work with a dust with mixed particle sizes, rather than a specific range, as an effort to simulate the mining atmosphere. An agate mortar-pestle arrangement was used for the crushing and grinding because of the close similarity of the structure of agate to that of quartz. Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DETAPAC) were purchased from Sigma. All other chemica1s were purchased from Fisher or Aldrich.Hemolysls ExperimentsHemolytic activity of silica was measured, following an established procedure,9 as the amount of hemoglobin released from a 2 % suspension of sheep erythrocytes after incubation with 10 mg of silica dust for one hour at 37 °C. The hemoglobin release was estimated via the absorbance at 540 nm using a Gioford spectrophotometer. The procedure was calibrated by substituting the silica dust by a phosphate buffer solution as a negative control (background) and O.S % Triton-X-100 as a positive control (100% hemolysis). In the 1940's a top blown water-cooled oxygen lance was developed to inject oxygen into liquid iron. This process, the LD or BOF process technique, today is used in 65% of the world's steel production, and represents the largest oxygen market for temperature enhancement in steel and non-ferrous smelting applications. There are three major approaches to the use of oxygen in metallurgical processes: (1) general enrichment of the air supplied to burners or tuyeres, (2) under-flame enrichment or injection, and (3) the use of an auxiliary oxy-fuel burner as a heat source. With each of these techniques there are technical and economic trade-offs.

A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t An, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5-40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects.Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26% of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77%. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88%, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au.

In November of 1983 a fire inside the autoclave caused the curtailment of operation of the Kidd Creek pressure leaching facility. Subsequent repairs and recommissioning of the autoclave in 1984 allowed Kidd Creek to increase its production of zinc as originally planned. This paper describes the operation of this process from 1984 to 1988 and details major mechanical work carried out on the vessel in 1.988:

A study was performed on selective flocculation and dispersion for ultrafine coal cleaning. A totally hydrophobic polymer, FR-7A, was employed as the selective flocculent for coal, sodium metaphosphate (SMP) as the general dispersant for shale and a synthetic polymeric product, polyacrylic acid-xanthate (PAAX), as the selective dispersant for pyrite. In the adsorption tests, nephelometry and spectrophotometry were employed for determining the concentration of FR-7A and PAAX in the solutions respectively. The adsorption tests indicated that: a) FR-7A has a higher affinity toward coal and pyrite than that for shale; and b) PAAX has a much higher affinity toward pyrite than toward coal and shale. In the selective flocculation tests, the ash-forming minerals can be efficiently rejected using sedimentation as the separation method. However, due to their relatively high specific gravity, pyrite particles co-settle with the coal flocs. To reject fine pyrite, a froth flotation was used for floc separation. The one-step flocculation-flotation process could reject more than 70% of each of the pyritic sulfur and ash minerals, while recovering more than 85% of the coal.

"Respirable-sized dust particles from a clay mine and mill were examined for aluminium and silicon content by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis at incident electron energies of 5--20 keV. Most of the high silica content particles, those which had a silicon to silicon plus aluminium signal fraction, measured at 20 ke V, of0.9 or greater, showed a decrease in the silicon fraction of signal with decreasing incident electron energy, down to values of between 0.6 and 0,8 at 5 keV: this decrease was a function of particle size and composition. Simple models for silicon fractiol) of signal vs incident electron voltage suggest this behavour is due to a heterogeneous particle structure in which an aluminosilicate coating occludes the surface of a silica particle core. The coating survives incubation in a major component of pulmonary surfactant.INTRODUCTIONMINING and some other dusty workplace atmospheres are monitored for respirable dust and quartz dust for purposes of occupational health protection, respirable quartz dust being a known cause of pulmonary disease. Respirable quartz exposure data are acquired also for epidemiological research on the correlation of pulmonary disease prevalence with respirable dust composition and concentration. For these purposes quartz content often is measured on collected dust samples by X-ray diffraction or in spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis spectrometry (SEM-EDX) is also used. The first two methods measure the bulk composition of a multi-particle dust sample; SEM-EDX measures the elemental composition of single ·particles. These methods as typically applied, including SEM-EDX with a 20-30 kilo-electron volt (keV) electron beam accelerating potential, do not distinguish homogeneous distribution of impurities in a particle from possible heterogeneous surface distribution. These measurements of quartz content are not always accurate predictors of the prevalence of dust-induced disease (ROBOCK and BAUER, 1990), which implies that the biologically available quartz surface may not be equivalent to conventionally measured quartz content of respirable dust in some exposure settings. Using a minor modification of conventional scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) protocols on samples of settled and airborne dust from a clay mine and mill we have detected heterogeneity with depth for aluminium impurity in high silica content particles, indicating that some of the quartz or 'free silica' respirable particles of the dust are aluminosilicate occluded. Coatings were not removed by incubation of the dust in a surrogate pulmonary hypophase surfactant fluid."

In February of 1989 the Mission Complex of ASARCO Incorporated completed an expansion of its concentrator, raising the base mining rate from 25,900 TPO (28,500 STPD) to 37,200 TPO (41,000 STPD). The expansion was accomplished by extending the twelve existing Mission ball mills in length, by installing the grinding circuit from Asarco's idled Sacaton Concentrator along with various auxiliary equipment, and by modifications to the flotation circuit and water systems. This paper will give a brief history of the consolidation of the ore body which made the expansion possible and explain the various parts of the expansion.

Investment activity in the Pacific Rim of Fire has seen a phenomenal surge from epithermal gold exploration. Individual countries are attractive because of lower up-front minerals lease costs (US, Canada), better geological prospectivity (Chile, Indonesia), or cheaper equities (Australia). Since the October 1987 stock-market crash, large companies are shedding minority joint venture interests to focus on core businesses. Some vertical integration is evident in Japanese coal investments in the Pacific Rim. This paper does not cover the aluminum industry oligopoly which is multi-national in character nor does it cover the many Canada to US minerals investments. It will be interesting to see if the new US-Canadian free-trade treaty will reverse that investment flow.

A database, incorporating historical data from British mines, to study the factors affecting inflows from proximate aquifers into longwall workings, showed that a main casual factor was the immediate roof strata lithology. When this comprised principally stronger sandstone, there was a tendency for periodic inrushes associated with face weighting. This phenomenon is explained by the collection of water in bed sepa¬ration cavities, where free water connected to a high pressure head aquifer source, may be trapped.

Five industrial installations of large lead-acid battery energy storage systems in operation in the United States, West Germany and the 'Republic of South Africa will be described. One example is for a deep mine shaft in which air ventilation and personnel evacuation require the highest reliability for emergency power. The battery system is designed for additional cost-effective benefits of peak load lopping and reactive power control. Commercially available lead-acid batteries of the following types are in use1 traction, truck, submarine, high power, and gel. Electrode grids of both the calcium and antimony alloy types are used. Applications include deep and shallow cycling as well as float and intermittent use. The advantages of sealed lead-acid batteries in UPS (uninterruptible power source) systems are well established throughout the world, and such system suppliers could readily develop markets for industrial emergency and peak power lead-acid storage battery installations.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report reviews the state of the art in blind pneumatic stowing of backfill in voids in abandoned coal mines. It contains a short history of the development of pneumatic equipment in mining and four recent case histories of blind pneumatic stowing. Limitations of pneumatic stowing in terms of equipment wear, costs, backfill material, and methodology are discussed, and some new procedures and designs are reviewed. A bibliography covering pneumatics in mining is included also. This report provides background for the preparation of a Bureau test program in which the variables affecting the efficiency of pneumatic backfilling will be studied using a full-scale surface test facility.

Prior laboratory work has demonstrated -that much of the fine ash-forming minerals entering a flotation froth are there as a result of water carry-over from the bulk contents of the flotation cell (Arnold and Aplan, 1986a). Using a bank of four 300 cu ft WEMCO flotation cells cleaning a well-liberated Lower Kittanning seam coal, test results show that the sulfur and ash content of the froth is directly related to the water content of the froth (or inversely related to the percent of solids in the froth). Reagent changes which result in a watery froth produce a higher ash content in the froth. A direct comparison of laboratory and plant results show that the standard laboratory flotation test produces a product higher in sulfur and ash than that produced in the plant. Caution should be exercised when extrapolating laboratory test results to the plant situation. A method of estimating coal flotation product quality in the plant based on laboratory tests is given.

The State of Minnesota is interested in stimulating the development of clay resources and recently supported a two year project to collect data on geological, mineralogical, processing, economic and environmental aspects of such potential developments. This paper presents the .various process options adopted on the bulk samples collected from the Minnesota River Valley area which is a primary deposit and contains a major silica fraction. A standard test flowsheet involving degritting, dispersion, HGMS, and cycloning was developed and for some samples yielded an acceptable filler grade product. Secondary streams containing relatively high grade kaolin but of coarse size were also obtained. Improvement in particle size distribution and in physical properties related to paper product specifications (brightness, viscosity) were obtained by size reduction processes. Market and economic considerations for kaolin consumption in the upper Midwest are analyzed. Current markets for paper grade kaolin in Minnesota were briefly discussed.

When acoustical materials are used in a mining environment for noise control purposes, they are subject to environmental deterioration from hydraulic fluid, moisture, and dust. These and other factors can cause physical degradation of the material, which can lessen its ability to absorb sound. In this study, the Bureau of Mines measured the sound absorption properties of 16 different acoustical materials after 4 sample treatments: (1) being kept clean and dry (as received from the supplier), as a control or reference standard, (2) immersion in water and draining, (3) immersion in lOO-pct-petroleum-type hydraulic fluid and draining, and (4) exposure in a coal mine. The last three treatments were used to approximate the type of physical degradation that can be experienced in actual use. The impedance tube or standing wave method was used to measure the normal absorption coefficient. It was found that the absorption coefficient of most materials was adversely affected by the retention of either oil or water, with oil having the greater effect. The only class of materials that was affected by neither oil nor water was neoprene foam.

The Powderhorn complex as a source of perovskite (calcium titanate) containing about 1.5% rare earths has been examined in several recent feasibility studies. Much promising exploration and process research has been done in recent years. This paper is presented with cautious optimism and with the acknowledgment that there may be some technical and economic areas yet to be explored. The Powderhorn carbonatite and alkalic stock in Gunnison County, Colorado, lies about 203 airlines km southwest of Denver at an elevation of 2450 to 2750 m (see Figures land 2). All of the mineable ore bodies are owned by Buttes Resources Company of Houston, Texas.

High-volume, low-pressure water jets have been employed for erosion of loosely consolidated rocks for centuries. This excavation method finds application in specialized circumstances even today. The use of high-pressure, low-volume water jets for rock cutting is more recent and was made possible by the development of high-pressure water pumps. Despite the benefits often claimed for these systems, high-pressure water jets still have not found widespread application. In this report, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has reviewed the various methods that have been employed using water jets to break rock and has focused on one method, termed "jet-assisted cutting," which was determined to be the closest to commercial development. The current state of knowledge based on laboratory and field experiences using this cutting method is reviewed, and possible future developments for this approach to excavation are assessed.
