The Crewstation Analysis Programs (CAP) is a package of computer programs that can be used to analyze some human engineering aspects of crewstation design (such as visibility and illumination) that have particular significance in underground mining. It was developed under the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Health, Safety and Mining Technology program at the Pittsburgh Research Center, Pittsburgh, PA. This manual describes the steps necessary to collect data in the laboratory to develop luminaire profiles for the CAP illumination analysis. It also describes how the CAP Illumination Model calculates illumination. 1.1 How CAP Calculates Illumination 1.1.1 Background -CAP currently includes assessments of visibility and illumination in the surrounding work area. The advantage of using computers for these types of analyses is that many design iterations can be tested quickly and efficiently to learn the effects of changes. This reduces the need for expensive testing using physical mockups. Another advantage is that design ideas can be tested in situations where it would not normally be possible. For instance, the effects of modifications to a lighting system or canopy design on visibility could be tested while the machine remains in service.

"Today, foundries are moving towards the use of models and design tools to gain a competitive advantage in producing castings of high desired quality. This leads to a growing alliance between foundries, software developers and researchers seeking to model, visualize and understand the phenomena taking place during the casting process. In addition, there is a need to develop affordable techniques to produce parts in small lot sizes. This leads to the development of a Flexible Manufacturing System consisting of: (1) up-front computer-aided engineering; (2) computer integrated proto typing with solid freeform fabrication; and (3) fabrication of the actual mold and related equipment to cast the part.This paper discusses some of the developments that are taking place today in the areas of modeling the physical phenomena during the casting process as well as towards developing a Flexible Manufacturing System for producing cast parts. Areas that require most work involve prediction of defects and mechanical properties using simplified analyses. In addition, electronic data sharing for collaborative engineering between geographically dispersed team members is also discussed. Case studies are presented showing successes as well as failures.IntroductionCasting, one of the oldest forms of metalworking, has recently seen a flurry of developments in the area of solidification modeling. These developments have come about after the realization that, in order to stay competitive, foundries need to reduce their scrap rate and production costs, and increase casting quality. Even though this is not new knowledge for foundry engineers, the tools to help them achieve this goal are just being developed and put in place for use by foundries. Several state-of-the-art software packages are currently available to analyze the solidification behavior in complex shaped castings. These packages make use of several different approaches for solving the various problems associated with casting processes. The overall architecture of a comprehensive solidification modeling system is shown in Figure 1."

"This paper describes a mathematical model which simulates numerically reaction driven fluid flow phenomena. The driving force of this reaction is an exothermic heat of mixing. In addition, the model predicts the heat and mass transfer phenomena where both heat source and heat sink co-exist in close proximity. The heat source is generated by an exothermic reaction. The heat sink is formed by a moving boundary such as the melting of a solid. This type of phenomena occur quite often in various metal processing operations in which exothermic additions are immersed in liquid metals. The model is based on the SIMPLER algorithm and uses an enthalpy method to predict the fluid flow, temperature, and concentration fields. The results indicate that the exothermic mixing reaction was responsible for an abrupt rise in temperature around the moving boundary. The intensity of this reaction was also found to be responsible for the enhanced convection of fluid and the acceleration of the moving boundary. The modelling results were also verified by experimental work which included velocity and temperature measurements in a low temperature physical model. IntroductionAlloying additions are used extensively in the treatment of liquid metals during metallurgical processes. The alloying additions introduced into liquid metals can be classified into various classes, each of which follows its own route[l]. As a major group, the exothermic additions follow two different steps during their assimilation into liquid metals. In the first step, upon immersion, a metal shell solidifies around such additions, and then melts back. At this point, the second step commences. During this second step, due to the mixing of the addition with a liquid metal, an exothermic reaction occurs, which liberates large amounts of heat, resulting in an enhanced convection in the liquid metal surrounding the addition."

Abstract -Nodules of carbonaceous matter have been observed in several Archaean peraluminous granites adjoining the gold- and uranium-bearing Witwatersrand Basin. These nodules, which resemble solid bitumen, usually replace uraninite or uranothorite and are paragenetically late. They show many similarities to kerogen seams and nodules associated with the conglomerate horizons in the Witwatersrand Basin, including composition, maturation, intimate association with uraninite, and a late paragenesis. U-Pb isotope ratios for granite-hosted and Witwatersrand kerogens define a single, albeit somewhat diffuse, Pb-loss discordia suggesting an upper intercept age of circa 2300 Ma. Carbon isotope analysis indicates lighter ?13C values for the granite-hosted nodules than for the sediment-hosted kerogen seams. Raman spectroscopy indicates that granite-hosted kerogen is more highly ordered than Witwatersrand seam kerogen. A model is presented which links the granitoid­ and sediment-hosted organic matter to an event of oil generation in the Witwatersrand Basin circa 2300 Ma ago. Light hydrocarbons migrated through the sediments and into underlying/adjacent granitic rocks, undergoing polymerization and accumulation in response to radiation accompanying the presence of high-uranium phases.

Massive sulfide ores and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitates represent two extremes of a spatial continuum of hydrothermal deposition along oceanic ridges. Elemental variations across this continuum are of interest to economic geologists as a prospective geochemical exploration tool. Theoretical considerations suggest that certain physical and chemical parameters can be used to model compositional variations within the far-field (i.e., Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide) component as a function of distance from ridge axis; however, testing and verification of such models generally has been precluded because the few available distal hydrothermal sediment sequences have been sampled at low resolution and/or are highly diluted with biogenic components (e.g., siliceous and calcareous tests). Recent ocean drilling (ODP Leg 145; Sites 885/886) in the North Pacific successfully recovered an extensive record of "biogenic-free" distal hydrothermal precipitates from an area approximately 60 km south of the Chinook Trough at longitude 168.1 °W. Geophysical and geomorphological evidence suggests the Chinook Trough is the southern lithospheric scar marking initiation of late Cretaceous north-south rifting, implying that recovered hydrothermal materials record distal hydrothermal precipitation from the now-subducted Kula-Pacific spreading ridge. The Chinook Trough hydrothermal sequence is a continuous 15 my record of "biogenic-free" hydrothermal Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitation mixed with eolian clays. It was deposited during the late Cretaceous, early Paleocene (80-65 Ma) as the perpendicular distance from ridge axis increased from 75 to 600 km. A high-resolution geochemical analysis of this hydrothermal sequence reveals distinct trends for the up-core (equivalent to increasing distance from ridge) distribution patterns of Fe, Sc, As, and rare earth elements (REE). The most common method used for cleaning the fine fraction in today's coal preparation plants is froth flotation. Past research and practice has found that froth flotation achieves excellent separation efficiencies for fine coals having only a small fraction of middling particles. However, its efficiency decreases sharply as the concentration of middling particles increases due to the flotation of high-ash particles having a small amount of hydrophobic coal present at the coal surface. Since gravity-based processes are much more efficient at treating middlings, the application of centrifugal washing for fine coal cleaning has been studied with an emphasis on the primary cleaning of fine circuit feed. Results will be shown from a parametric study using a Falcon centrifugal concentrator which reveals that the separation performance is a function of particle size, bowl geometry, feed solids content, and feed rate.

"A versatile in-situ polymerization approach is described for the synthesis of polymerceramic nanocomposites consisting of two-dimensional layers of mica-type silicate (MTS) within polymer matrices. Functionalized, organically modified mica-type silicates (OMTS) were used to promote delamination/dispersion of the host layers and initiate polymerization of organic rrionomer. Epoxy nanocomposites prepared in this manner exhibit substantial modulus reinforcement at low silicate loadings. The water vapor permeability of the poly(?-caprolactone) nanocomposite containing 4.8% silicate by volume was reduced by nearly an order of magnitude compared to pure poly (?-caprolactone).IntroductionPolymer matrix nanocomposites are a relatively new class of materials with dimensions typically in the range of 1-100 nm.1 In general, because of the ultrafine phase dimensions involved, nanocomposites exhibit new and improved properties when compared to their micro- or macrocomposite counterparts. We as well as others are currently investigating the design, synthesis and characterization of polymer-ceramic nanocomposites. Our effort, in particular, has focused on the use of mica-type silicates (MTS) with various thermoplastic and thermosetting matrices.2-5MTS's belong to the general family of 2: 1 layered silicates. Their crystal structure consists of layers of two silica tetrahedral sheets fused to an edge-shared octahedral sheet of either aluminum or magnesium hydroxide. Stacking of the layers leads to a regular van der Waals gap or interlayer.6 Isomorphic substitution within the layers generates negative charges that are counterbalanced by cations residing in the interlayers. Although the natural forms of MTS's usually contain hydrated Na+ or K+ ions, ion exchange reactions with organic cations (e.g. alkylammonium ions) can render the normally hydrophilic MTS's organophilic."

"Abstract - Gold mineralization in the Main Reef Complex at Sheba Gold Mine is hosted within shear zones in a sequence of shales and greywackes of the Fig Tree Group. Competency contrasts between these rocks and a steeply dipping chert unit provided a locus for the development of right lateral steeply dipping shear zones. A set of flatter dipping shear fractures crosscut these zones with their intersections defining a system of en échelon ore shoots.Mineralization is both of vein type and disseminated strata-controlled replacement type. The latter occurs mainly within the wall rocks to the shear zones. Arsenopyrite and pyrite are the major sulfides, with arsenopyrite being confined largely to greywacke beds and pyrite to the more iron-rich shale units. Gold was introduced, together with minor sphalerite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and early arsenopyrite, toward the end stages of a first pyrite phase. The mineralizing fluids were introduced along dilated cleavage planes and, emanating from these, produced a series of replacement fronts. Mineralization was syntectonic to late tectonic and occurred under conditions of progressive deformation, resulting in sulfides which are concentrated in the hinges of shear-related folds and semi­ massive sulfides within tension fractures which are folded, attenuated and fractured .An analysis of the structures shows a sequence of events in which an initial ductile simple-shear event with a steep sense of movement was succeeded by a more brittle strike-slip event. Mineralization is temporally related to the latter. This evolution in structural style was probably related to reactivation of the Sheba Fault as a transcurrent fault during emplacement of large granitoid bodies."

This report summarizes studies of 55 Idaho national forest roadless areas completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the period 1966-1992. These roadless areas have been recommended for addition to the National Wilderness Preservation System, proposed as special management areas, or otherwise recommended for study by the U.S. Forest Service or the Idaho congressional delegation. The Bureau of Mines' studies indicate which parts of the roadless areas contain mineral resources. They also show where mining and prospecting are likely to occur in the future, where mineral production has occurred in the past, and where abandoned mine workings (possible hazards) would be encountered. The number of mine and prospect workings found are a measure not only of surface disturbance, but of areas not wilderness in character.

Zinc bearing materials containing chlorides and fluorides of alkali metals, such as EAF dust, Waelz oxides, galvanizing ashes, zinc & brass foundry fumes and converter fumes are little attractive, both technically and economically for processing in ISF plant or in a conventional zinc sulphate electrolysis works. The Ezinexm Process allows for the recovery of high purity zinc in cathode form, from these materials, regenerating the leaching liquor. The process is based on a new electrochemical system which depolarizes the anode reaction with reduction of the cell voltage, compared with the traditional sulphate electrolysis method. The electrolyte, based on a chloroamrnino complex, allows for the recovery of other valued metals present in the zinc bearing materials such as lead, copper and silver, these being recovered as a metallic cement consequently improving the economics of the process.

Power consumption of stirred media mills has been studied by an approach developed from work on stirred reactors. Relationships between torque required to rotate both disc and pin impellers immersed in dense particulate media as a function of speed, impeller and tank dimensions, and other relevant variables are evaluated. Data collected during numerous different experimental conditions are analyzed. The results can be summarized and presented in the form of characteristic plots, general equations and dimensionless group correlations involving power and modified Reynolds numbers. Special attention is directed towards the rheological properties of the media, which is considered as non-Newtonian liquids and hence, the equation of power law liquids is employed. Procedure for estimating parameters of effective viscosity and scale-up guidelines with respect to power consumption are put forward.

Fly ash, a by-product of coal burning power plants, poses a major problem for the utility industry since most fly ash must be landfilled. These quantities may represent as much as 20% of the total material going into landfills. A major problem with fly ash utilization is that although the ash consists of useable components, ash composition can vary depending on the types of coal burned and plant operating conditions. Ash is first characterized using SEM, image analysis, and chemical methods. Processing techniques were developed to separate ash into various components including cenospheres, magnetic spheres, carbon, and clean ash. These products are again evaluated for various utilizations before being used to produce valuable products such as mullite, activated carbon, fillers in plastics, and concrete.

Information regarding the occurrence and severity of the accidents, the type of equipment involved, the primary and contributing causes, and preventive measures is included. The goal of this report is to provide information that will aid mine operators and safety managers in the recognition of hazards associated with operating mobile mining equipment in an underground mining environment.

Destructive Thermal Technology (DTT) is used in the management of various waste streams. DTT includes Destructive Distillation, Pyrolysis and Classical Incineration. Recent work has more clearly defined the differences in these technologies based upon a more rigorous thermochemical approach. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has chosen Classical Incineration as the Best Developed Available Technology (BDAT) for the management of hazardous organic wastes. Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) and Sewage Sludges (SS) are also managed using Classical Incineration. Three environmental problems plague the use of Classical Incineration. Destructive Distillation, on the other hand, avoids these problems. It is an environmentally benign DTT for managing a wide variety of organic waste streams, including hazardous wastes. Thermochemical analysis of the available data on the performance of three types of DTT will be discussed.

The accurate estimation of ore reserves along with capital and operating costs are two key components to the successful outcome of any feasibility study. In recent years, there have been many project failures caused by improper estimation of ore reserves. The accurate estimation of ore reserves for any deposit relies heavily on understanding its geology and underlying assumptions unique to the estimation techniques being used. The assumptions unique to commonly used traditional and geostatistical reserve estimation technique will be reviewed. The shortcomings of the estimation techniques and their possible impact on a given project's economic outcome will be discussed. The latest developments in geostatistics in overcoming existing reserve estimation problems will be presented.

The feasibility of producing low carbon (LC) ferromanganese (FeMn) by lime-'ore' melt refining of high-grade ferromanganese silicon (FeMnSi) was investigated. Thermodynamic simulations demonstrated significant benefits in moving from a single-stage ladle operation to a two-stage counter-current reladling operation (to emulate the commercial Penin Process). The theoretical alloy silicon content was predicted to be refined from 1.57 to 0.005 per cent silicon, at a 6.2 per cent higher manganese yield (yield predicted to increase from 82.3 to 88.5 per cent). Extension of this counter-current refining principle, to a multistage Counter-Current Reaction Launder (CCRL) was investigated using the Slag Metal And Gas Klnetics (SMAK) software to model the mass transfer kinetics of the multicomponent coupled reaction system. Simulation results suggested that commercial production of 50 000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of refined LC FeMn, containing less than 0.5 per cent silicon, at manganese yields of up to 90 per cent, should be feasible in a compact CCRL (7 m long by 0.7 m wide).

The results of an experimental study of polymer-induced flocculation of clay suspensions in continuous, stirred-tank reactors are presented. The effects of polymer dosage, mixing time and mixing intensity are shown to be generally similar to those observed for equivalent batch systems, but flocculation appears to be generally less effective in the continuous process. Settling rates are lower and supernatant turbidities are higher for the continuous system. It is postulated that non-equilibrium effects due to simultaneous polymer adsorption and floc growth can be exploited so as to enhance flocculation in batch systems. The nature of the continuous process, however, offers less opportunity for taking advantage of such effects. Conditions in a continuous flocculation system inherently lead to a closer approach to equilibrium.

It is well known that manganiferous silver ores containing manganese intimately associated with silver are not amenable to conventional extraction methods. The segregation process has been applied primarily for recovering copper from oxidized and oxide-sulfide ores. A new alternative process combining segregation roasting followed by flotation to recover silver from refractory manganiferous silver ores, was studied using a 23 factorial experimental design. Laboratory investigations have been conducted on a manganiferous silver ore analyzing 0.02% copper, 0.09% lead, 0.33% zinc, 12.55% manganese and 187 g/ton silver to study the effects of additives salt, coke and copper oxide on silver recovery. Results indicate that 79.3% silver recovery can be attained in the absence of copper oxide and 88.4% when the copper oxide content is 1.5% at '750°C, 2% salt and 1% coke and 30 minutes of roasting time. It was concluded that doping with copper oxide improves silver recovery.

In September 1992, mining in Mexico was opened again to foreign investment by President Salinas-de Gortari, after thirty years of "Mexicanization" of mining industry which limited foreign participation up to a 49 % (or 34 % in case of national reserves) on a Mexican mining corporation. During said period mining in Mexico was controlled by four or five big mining companies and besides mining production was focused mainly on silver, lead, zinc, copper and fluorspar. Suddenly in middle of a big crisis on Mexican mining industry due to low prices of minerals in the world and also in a period on which it seems that mining industry in the United States and Canada has been condemned to die for environmental reasons, it appears a new Mexican Mining Law to permit foreigners to participate in mining in Mexico' trough Mexican mining corporations that they may control up to 100 %
