While the importance of the superficial alteration of golddeposits is recognized in pure science, it seems often to be singularly disregarded among engineers in practice. Its great practical bearing lies in the exploitation of new regions; and nowhere are the disastrous results of ignoring it more vividly shown than in Western Australia, where the impoverishment of the ores, and their frequent transition from free-milling' to refractory character in depth (things, as a rule, neither anticipated nor ascertained by exploration beforehand), have brought many companies to ruin, or caused the loss of much money squandered on machinery adapted only to temporary conditions.

The object of the present paper is to call attention briefly to a novel method of analyzing the action of the ordinary gravity stamp, which has not only thrown much light upon the exact motion of the stamp-head, but promises also to be of value in determining the efficiency of a new mill before setting it to its work of crushing, and in this respect should be of service to constructors of mining machinery as well as to mining engineers. The method was devised by Mr. D. B. Morison, and developed in connection with his experiments on the comparative crushing-effects of his patent high-speed stamp and the ordinary cam-stamp, which were carried out at the works of Messrs. L. Richardson & Sons, Engineers, Hartlepool, and on which he read a paper at Newcastle in 1897.* Mr. Morison's experiments were of a very exhaustive nature; and having been consulted by him during his investigations, I had frequent opportunities of examining the methods employed and the results obtained. Experiments were first made with an apparatus resembling the indicntor of a steam-engine, inasniuch as the drum revolved alternately backwards and forwards, thus producing a closed diagram. This form was not found satisfactory, and it was therefore altered so as to cause the drum to revolve continuously in one direction, thus giving a continuous or open diagram. The arrangement is shown in plan in Fig. 1; a collar, A, surrounds the stamp-stem loosely and works between the guides B, B, which constrain it to move in a vertical line only. The development in the perfection of mine-surveying instruments has been by no means rapid, as it has depended somewhat on the details of construction borrowed from astronomical and geodetic theodolites, largely on the restrictions laid down by mining companies and the prejudices of mine managers themselves, but more than all on the methods used in conducting surveys and the importance attached thereto. Mine-surveying, in some form or other, has been practiced from the very earliest times; but it has never kept pace with the other branches of surveying, or even with the art of mining itself, and cannot be recognized as an exact science until shortly before the beginning of this century. The works of Hero of Alexandria, who lived in the second century B.C., are still extant, and contain descriptions of a rectangular sighting-instrument, which he invented and called a diopter. His improvement upon this simple construction, which possibly he devised for use in the Greek mines for rough leveling-purposes and for laying out any angle, must be considered, says Hübner," as the origin of the highly perfected theodolite of to-day. Whether this instrument came into general use during the first centuries of the Christian era, is not recorded; in fact, no writer undertakes to tell how mine-surveying was conducted until 1556, in which year Agricola expounds the principles of mining and metallurgy in his De Re Metallica, devoting the entire fifth chapter to the practice of mine-surveying (see Fig. 1). In this our fifth year of actual mining, a resume of our methods of mining may prove of interest. Our conditions are radically different from those of other districts; and we are just commencing to be able to draw conclusions regarding the systems in use. The ore-bodies of the range lie in a blanket-formation varying in width from 200 or 300 feet to over half a mile, and in length from 500 feet to more than 2 miles. It is practically horizontal in bedding, but in places has a dip of as much as 7 feet in 100 for a quarter of a mile. The top of the ore is in most cases nearly level, although local rolls make the back (or top of the ore) vary to the extent of 10, or in rare cases 20 feet, and very frequently there is a general slope of the top of the ore, as well as the bottom, which makes it impossible to mine it all from one level. Taking the average of long stretches, the side-walls may be described as quite regular; but local deflections make it necessary to prospect for the wall-rock, and in drifting underground it is common to drive along the sidewalls, uncovering them almost continuously, and thus making sure that no large pockets of ore are missed. The dip of the side-walls varies greatly, but an average is probably between 45' and 60°, sloping inward at the bottom, making the general shape of the ore-body not exactly a basin, but more nearly a trough, usually with a longitudinal trend and sloping sides, and ore much the deepest at the center. As to rock-occurrences inside the ore-body, the properties most largely worked may be said to be particularly free from rock, although much trouble is occasioned by bunches or small masses. In most cases these are not properly described as " horses" of rock, since they have neither continuity nor regularity of trend, but are offshoots connected with the side-walls or bottom.

Prof. A. Ledebur, Freiberg, Saxony :* Mr. Sauveur has presented and enriched with original observations a valuable summary of the theories advanced hitherto concerning the hardening of steel; but in one particular, it seems to me, his statements call for correction. He says:

Joseph LeConte, Berkeley, Gal.: I have read with some care and with extreme interest the work of Dr. Don, and have 110 hesitancy in expressing my high estimate of its value. We have here an example of laborious work undertaken in the true scientific spirit and by right methods. Loose statements and rash conjectures are here brought to the test of chemical analyses. By such work only may we hope to reach reliable conclusions and finally to solve the complex problems presented by the occurrence of ore-deposits. Such work as this is not only scientific but Is in the highest degree practical; for while a crude and imperfect science, by interfering with the results of approved empirical methods, may be positively hurtful, a more perfect science must eventually become the only sure guide to practice. Such a more perfeet science can only be reached by such work as Dr. Don's. I am sure every member of the Institute will unite with me in the hope that Dr. Don will continue his work, and that his example will incite others to similar work. S. F. Emmons, Washington, D. C. N. FEnner, New York City (communication to the Secretary) : A possible explanation of some of the' phenomena of amalgamation cited by Mr. Bayliss and others has occurred to me. We know that if, to a quantity of mercury, gold and silver are added until a putty-like paste is formed, and if this mass is spread on a flat surface and pressure is applied, a more fluid portion of the mercury will be squeezed out from the rest, carrying gold and silver with it. The proportion of gold to silver will depend, I think, upon various causes and conditions—the relative chemical affinity which gold and silver have for mercury; the amount of pressure used; the presence of other metals:

Erwin S. SperRy, Bridgeport, Conn.: The analysis of refined copper is a subject of great importance, and has not received the attention it deserves. Copper metallurgists, therefore, will welcome the paper of Mr. Heath with satisfaction. The state of the art of the chemical analysis of copper has been such that consumers, if they could not afford to run any risk, have been obliged to buy copper from the smelter having the best reputation, and a specification for copper to meet certain requirements could not be drawn up by the mere giving of the chemical constituents. Mr. Heath has brought the analysis of the copper to such a state that when a specification calls for copper " equal to Lake copper " one will know immediately what percentage of the pure metal to expect. It seems to be a pretty well established fact that the copper of Lake Superior is practically free from antimony and bitmuth ; and, with the exception of arsenic, the other elements are easily separated from copper by electro-deposition in an acid solution. The authorities differ in regard to the question whether antimony is deposited with the copper in an acid solution. Classen* recommends the employment of a solution containing 10 per cent. of free nitric acid, sp.gr.1.21, and the strength of the current from 0.3 to 0.4 ampere, in order to prevent the other metals from being deposited with the copper; and for this reason, I presume, the method has been generally used. I, myself, have been accustomed to use such a solution for the analysis of copper-alloys, but have found that for such alloys only a small quantity of nitric acid is necessary, if sulphuric acid is present in sufficient amount to give the solution the required conductivity.

(communication to the Secretary): When a simple beam supports any given load, the lower fibers me in tension while the upper fibers are in compression, and if its cross-section is rectangular the neutral surface, where the stresses pass through zero from tension to compression, is at mid-depth, provided the elastic limit is not exceeded. In addition to the longitudinal stresses, there are horizontal shearing-stresses between the fibers which have their maximum value in the neutral surface, and which equal zero at the upper and lower surfaces, while there are also vertical shearing-stresses. Let another beam of the same dimensions be placed on top of this one, and the load be doubled, it then produces stresses in each beam of the same character, magnitude and distribution as in the preceding case, provided there be no friction between the adjacent surfaces of the beams. Next let these two beams be so firmly united that there will be no motion between them when the same load is again applied. All the fibers in the upper beam are now in compression, and those in the lower beam in tension, while the maximum stresses in the outer fibers are only one-half as large as before. The strength of the combined beams is therefore doubled. If, however, some motion occurs between the beams, then the stresses in some of the lower fibers of the upper beam pass from compression to tension, and those in some of the upper fibers of the lower beam from tension to compression, while the stresses in the outer fibers have a magnitude between the two values previously stated. THE accuracy of the silver-assay depends in great measure upon a careful regulation of the heat of the muffle during the process of cupellation. At the beginning of the operation, a relatively high temperature is required to " open " the lead buttons, that is, to clear off the black film of oxide that covers the surface of the metal button immediately after fusion has taken place. The muffle is usually closed up until the buttons are uncovered. As soon as a clear, free surface of molten metal is exposed to the oxidizing action of the air, the temperature should immediately be lowered to the minimum temperature at which the formation and absorption of litharge can progress freely, and the buttons still be kept from " freezing." The process, under satisfactory conditions, will be characterized by the formation of rings of litharge crystals (" feathers," as they are styled), on the cupel, about the oxidizing globule; and the nearer these rings of litharge crystals call be made to approach the central oxidizing globule without interfering with the freedom of oxidation and absorption, the smaller will be the volatilization of silver, and consequeiltly the greater the degree of accuracy attained. This minimum heat must be maintained uniformly during the oxidation of the lead; and just as the last of the lead is disappearing, and the button is preparing to l blick," the temperature of the muffle should be allowed to rise so that the last traces of lead will be driven off. This regulation of the heat calls into play all the skill of the assayer, and requires a vigilant eye, able to distirlguish between the slightest variations of temperature of the muffle, assisted by a nice adjustment of fuel and draft. With a few cupels in the muffle at one time, the proper heat for each cupel can be maintained by roughly approximating the proper temperature, and then moving the cupels backward and forward in the muffle; but this is gene-

Although every mill-man of even limited experience in the amalgamation of gold-ores is probably aware that copper plates will in time become coated by the accumulation of gold-amalgam, it may be that many do not know to what extent this accumulation occurs in the treatment of ores dissimilar to those with which they are familiar, and under conditions foreign to those with which they have to contend in any given locality. The writer, therefore, feels relieved from the necessity of offering an apology for dealing with such an elementary subject, believing that certain facts in reference thereto, which have recently come under his personal observation, will be interesting to many, and possibly instructive to some persons engaged in the amalgamation of gold-ores. The facts hereinafter stated were observed in the 50-stamp "combination"-mill, owned by the Montana Mining Company, Limited, of England, operating the Drum Lummon mine, situated at Marysville, Montana. The material treated in this mill consists of quartz and ores of somewhat variable character, containing gold and silver in native form, as well as in chemical union with the sulphides of iron and copper. There is also present a little lead, some arsenic and antimony, and a little zinc. The last fair minerals, however, are of irregular occurrence, and but sparingly distributed throughout the ore, and yield only a trace in the analysis of the average material in this mill. The free gold, which is in a condition of fine division, and rarely visible to the naked eye, carries silver as an alloy; and the native silver, which is only occasionally observed, is present in the richer ores in wireand in leaf-form. Of the two precious metals, the ore worked during the past three years and ten months, the period under review, contained about 1/2-ounce of gold, and from 7 to 12 ounces of silver, per ton of 2000 pounds.

Robert H. Richards, Boston, Mass.: Mr. Goodale calls attention to the difficulty of obtaining clean tailings from the jigs which are fed by the spigots of the hydraulic separator. This difficulty is universally encountered. The Lake Superior copper mills practically overcome it by running the beds of those jigs loose, carrying into the hutch all of the available copper and some sand. These hutches are again jigged upon threesieve Collom jigs, where the treatment is very slow and gentle; and on the successive jigs lighter and lighter bedding is used. The last sieve is run thin enough to let some sand into the hutch. With these precautions most of the free copper is extracted, as well as a fair proportion of the included copper.

BROWN, Bodie, Cal.: Mr. Rickard's paper, with its valuable illustrations, brings into fresh clearness the game of hide-and-seek which the miner must play with his ore-deposit; but, more than this, it goes far towards classifying those perplexing idiosyncrasies which, while unclassified, constitute a labyrinth almost without clue. Probably every engineer can add to the list by the mention of at least one fresh detail from his own experience, and I for one would like to comment on two of Mr. Rickard's divisions. To what he has written about " walls within walls" and " walls without walls," the accompanying Figs. 1 and 2 may be appropriate, the more so as they represent conditions obtaining in a part of the Butte copper-belt more typical of the copper-veins as a whole than the Gagnon, which, in some respects the most interesting mine in the camp, stands almost alone in many particulars. (See nuns., xvi., 62.) Fig. 1 was sketched in January, 1895, in the stopes above the 700-foot level of the Colusa-Parrot mine, east of the Parrot and southwest. of the Anaconda. The stope, the commercial foot-wall of which is shown at A, was 30 feet wide at this section, the pay-ore being massive chalcocite, jumbled with bornite, pyrite, quartz and thoroughly broken-down granite. A and At are inch-thick seams of black talc; B, B' and B" are also talc, possibly 1/8-inch thick. In the plane of the section the "banded quartz " and " quartz and pyrite " were both of too low grade for extraction, but 5 feet back along the stope had been of fair value. The granite with quartz and bornite between Bt and A' was pay-ore, but that to the right of B" was not. In both cases the ferro-magnesian minerals had been removed, leaving, where not obscured by ore, faint, dark patches. Between A'

Henry Louis, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England (communication to the Secretary): I think very highly of the novel and ingenious device of Prof. Richards for analyzing the movement of the various elements of the jig; it is a method that certainly seems to promise valuable results, if we could only make certain that these various indicator-appliances have no effect upon the action of the jig. I would like, however, to suggest that in future experiments the connection between the plunger indicator-rod and the pencil should be made by means of parallel motions, so as better to reproduce the rectilinear motion of the piston. I should expect, if this were done, that the " curve " of the plunger in the Harz jig, at any rate, would be represented either by straight lines or else by quite regular curves, according to the method by which the plunger is set in motion; the apparent combinatioil of straight line and curve seems difficult to explain. With respect to the water-curve, I am afraid I am completely at fault, but no doubt Prof. Richards can explain my difficulty.
