This paper, describing the milling practices at the White Bird concentrator, Picher, Okla., is one of a series on milling practices being published by the Bureau of Mines. The concentrator of the White Bird mine, Canam Metals Corporation, is located in almost the geographical center of the present Picher mining cam' in the Tri-State district, one-half mile east of the town of Picher, 1 mile south of the Kansas State line, and about 18 miles west of the Missouri State line.

The purchase of mechanical equipment for mines is not unlike the purchase of other materials or supplies in general principle, but on account of the major part such equipment plays in the operations, and of the fact that life and valuable property are at stake, the matter demands the most careful attention on the part of the purchaser. The problems and difficulties encountered are dealt with below in their sequence in the purchasing procedure. Requisiting Although it is quite a common practice to submit a tentative specification of requirements to recognized manufacturers of equipment- soliciting alternative propositions or recommendations for study in the selection of certain equipment-as a rule the first step in purchasing procedure is the requisition. Primarily, it is the form that carries to the purchasing department the record of equipment wanted. A full and complete description or specification, and accuracy of record, are the important points to be insisted on in a requisition. Too much attention cannot be given to this detail, as this is one of 'the most important phases of purchasing work. Incomplete information, either in specification or detail, leads to delay in handling the requisition, and, if not detected in the purchasing department, may mean receipt of material which cannot be used for the purpose intended. In addition to description of material or equipment to be ordered, the requisition should also show where or what the equipment is for, whether for operating or new work. If for capital account, the number of the authority for expenditure should be given for record and distribution purposes.

INCREASING governmental control of human activities seems inevitable. Within the present generation railroad rates and the public sale of water, gas and electricity have been subjected to rigid regulation. The field of control is slowly but surely being enlarged, and it is the object of this paper to outline in brief space this tendency toward increased governmental regulation, as far as mineral resources are concerned. Our, dual form of government complicates the problem. We must deal not only with the powers of the Federal Government, but also with those of the individual States. In order to approach this question intelligently we must have some conception of the powers and jurisdiction of the States and the United States, respectively, over mineral lands and mineral production. Starting with the Federal Government we find it never owned any public domain within the States that formed a part of the thirteen original colonies and, for historical reasons, the same is true of Tennessee and Texas. The Mid-Western States were erected out of the public domain which was acquired by the United States through cession from the original States or by purchase from foreign nations. Congress early in the last century adopted a policy of leasing public lands containing lead deposits in a portion of this Mid-Western territory, but later abandoned that policy and disposed of such public, lands, mineral and non-mineral, outright so that they long since have practically all passed into private ownership and become subject to the general jurisdiction of the respective State governments. In the great public domain lying west of the Mississippi River, and in portions of some of the Southern States, the Federal Government adopted a new mineral land policy following the discovery of gold in California. (Acts of Congress of 1866, 1870, and 1872.) The mineral lands within these States, instead of being disposed of on the game basis as agricultural lands, as occurred in the Mid-Western States, were segregated from agricultural lands and sold under special laws intended to encourage mining, giving the miner the free right to locate and work these mineral lands without paying any royalty to the Federal Government. The Noranda smelter was built by Noranda Mines, Limited, from the designs of A. E. Wheeler, consulting metallurgist, New York, for the reduction of ores and concentrates from the Horne mine, and to treat, on a custom basis, ores and concentrates from other mines in the Rouyn district. The smelter is situated at Noranda in western Quebec, about 330 miles directly north of Toronto. Ground was first broken for construction in November, 1925, before the completion of the branch railway into the district, which was not finished until October, 1926. After many difficulties and delays due to the Jack 'of transportation and the severe weather during the winter months, the smelter was started in December, 1927, and the first blister copper was poured on December 17th. The smelter was built throughout in two duplicate units, each with a rated capacity of 500 tons of ore per day. Operations were started with only one unit, and after several months it was found that one unit alone would smelt 1,000 tons of ore per day. At this time only one shaft, No. 3, existed, and its hoisting capacity and the capacity of the original crushing plant were insufficient to supply ore for two units at the increased tonnage. Accordingly No. 4 shaft was sunk and a new crushing plant provided to handle the ore hoisted there. This work was completed in the latter part of November, 1929, and since that time both smelter units have been operating.

Introduction Gowganda forms part of the general Cobalt area. Its rocks and ores are very similar to those of the other parts of the area. While its total production of silver is only 4 per cent of that of the famous Cobalt silver camp, its 1928 shipments contained 42 1/2 per cent as much silver as those of Cobalt for that year. During twenty years of production, 15,000,000 ounces of silver have been shipped from Gowganda. Of this, over 8,000,000 ounces have been shipped in the past five years. The area has thus made for several years a substantial contribution to the wealth of Ontario. Its future depends to a great extent on the priee of silver, which is now, unfortunately, at a record low price. This paper is a discussion of how the Gowganda ore-shoots occur, together with some notes on the milling of the ores at the Castle-Trethewey Mines. The first part is written in the hope of stimulating further study of the silver occurrences, which may lead to further discoveries. The second part, besides being a matter of record, may be of some use to operators of small mills. The drawings in the several Figures illustrating the text are by W. D. Stroud, mine superintendent of the Castle-Trethewey Mines, the benefit of whose opinions I have had in compiling these notes.

This paper describes preliminary tests at the Bureau's Experimental Mine to determine, under conditions that may prevail in a bituminous coal-mine heading, how small a quantity of fire damp may bring coal-dust into suspension and ignite it. The results show that the explosion of as little as 150 cubic feet of an explosive mixture of gas and air containing 9 per cent natural gas may start a disastrous explosion of coal-dust. This is a very small volume, of gas, to cause such a result. Let us suppose that this amount of explosive mixture, as at the face of an entry which was 10 feet wide and the face was overcut to a depth of 6 feet and an upper layer of coal 2.5 feet thick had been removed, the recess so made would have a volume of 150 cubic feet. Furthermore, only 13 cubic feet of pure methane is needed in thin volume to produce this 9 per cent explosive mixture.

"""Rock-dust barriers""5 as they are termed in this country, are for the purpose of confining a coal-dust mine explosion to the limited area in which it originates. These barriers were first tested in 1910-1911, with favorable results under the conditions of test, at the French official gallery which was then at Lieven, Department of Pas-de-Calais. Shortly afterwards the Bureau of Mines in the course of its investigation of all practical explosion-prevention methods tried barriers in the Experimental Mine near Bruceton, using the primary form of simple fixed cross shelves 20 inches wide extending over the passageway and laden with rock-dust. The Bureau termed them “Taffanel barriers"" in honor of the director of the Lieven testing station. The trials were made in conjunction with tests of explosibility of different coal-dusts.Experience showed that although the principle of barriers had merit when they were used for secondary defence, the primary form was uncertain in effectiveness. This led the senior author to design mechanically discharging barriers to be operated by the compression air waves which precede the flame of an explosion. For the better understanding of the principal involved, it is pointed out that the advance air waves are what make a coal-dust explosion possible by stirring up the coal-dust from the walls and floor of the passageway. If a barrier can throw inert dust into the air to form a cloud as dense or denser than that formed by the coal-dust, it will neutralize the explosiveness of the coal-dust, and the flame of the explosion will be extinguished. When the flame ceases, the pressure dies away in a short distance if the 'area that had been traversed by the explosion is not large."

In the same Annual Report of the U. S. Geological Survey, King reported the results of his experiments on the flow of water through porous media. He found that there was a departure of about 86 per cent. from a linear relationship between rate of flow and pressure, for a specimen of Dunnville sandstone for pressure drops not exceeding 60 cm. of mercury. The specimen was approximately 4 cm. in diameter and 5.1 cm. in length. Over the same range of pressure he found a departure of 45 per cent. for a specimen of Madison sandstone. For unconsolidated sands he found departures as great as 49 per cent. for pressure drops of 70 cm. of mercury; for pressure drops not exceeding a few inches of water he obtained a close approximation to a linear relation. There were 63 fatalities in the California petroleum industry in 1929, the largest number in any year since 1923 and an increase of 34.0 per cent over 1928, when 47 men lost their lives in the drilling, producing, manufacturing, and marketing divisions of the industry. It will be observed from the accompanying chart that after following a consistent decline for 4 years, the fatality curve turned upward in 1923 and advanced sharply in 1929. Although this increase in fatalitics coincided with a period of intensive development it tends to indicate some laxness in the industry during a period of increased hazards. Intensive drilling campaigns are usually started hurriedly and conducted with a great demand for speed, and the result is that accident-prevention work is too often relegated to a position of minor importance. A year ago, Marshall and Bird presented a paper in which a new method of measuring the agglutinating power of coal was described.' The procedure used was to determine the strength of a button containing 10 parts sand and one part coal, formed by carbonizing the mixture in a crucible in an electric furnace. The result of the determination was reported as the total weight in grams required to bring about complete destruction of the button. Correlations were shown between the agglutinating value and some of the characteristics of the different coals that were investigated. This agglutinating test has been in use fairly continuously during the past five years for coals of widely differing coking qualities, and it has shown reasonably concordant results accurate enough for commercial use, although there are many features of the test which should have further scientific study. During the past year a study has been made of some coals of low coking strengths, and incidental to the main investigation some data which appear to be of interest and value were obtained on the loss in agglutinating power caused by exposure to the air. Three coals were investigated, all of which were of the Tertiary age; two were from one field in Asia, and one from a field in the United States. The three were similar, as shown by the proximate and ultimate analyses in Table 1 (moisture-free basis). Coals SA and RA generally contain about 5 per cent. moisture and coal P about 3.5 per cent. moisture on the as-received basis. The large difference in the ash contents of the coals, amounting to practically 10 per cent. between SA and RA, and P, makes difficult a direct comparison of their qualities. The recommendations of the Bureau of Mines on rock dusting practices are embodied, except in a few details, in the Recommended American Practice for Rock-Dusting Coal Mines to Prevent Coal-Dust Explosions, approved by the American Engineering Standards Committee. December 30, 1925. It is specified that the dust to be used is of a elm that all will pass through a sieve having 20 meshes per linear inch and that 50 per cent or more will pass through a sieve having 200 meshes per linear inch. Thus the coarsest size of dust and the minimum proportion of fine dust are specified, but the specification does not indicate whether a larger proportion of fine dust would be desirable. There have been advocates of the use of that size of rock dust of which the particles would all approach 200-mesh in fineness. Explosion tests were made in the Experimental mine in the earlier period of testing which indicated that the finer rock dust is somewhat more effective under test conditions, but not sufficiently so to Justify the cost of finer grinding of the dust; also there are some disadvantages of finer dust described hereafter.

Caesium, rubidium, and lithium are sometimes described as the minor or rarer alkali metals. They generally occur together in nature, although, lithium is distributed more widely and is far more abundant than either of the other two. The chemical, and even the physical, properties of these three elements can best be considered In conjunction with the more familiar members of the alkali group, sodium and potassium. The five elements lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and caesium show an interesting gradation properties from member to member with the increase in atomic weights. All are silvery white and soft enough to be cut with a knife. They tarnish rapidly in air and decompose water at ordinary temperatures. The lowest temperature at which the action of the several metals on water can be de¬tected is -98°C. for sodium, -105°C, for potassium, 108°C. for rubidium, and -116°C. for caesium. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to record the results of researches on anhydrite that have been undertaken at the Nova Scotia Technical College during the last two or three years. The work was carried out in the Mining Department of the College, and several investigators were engaged on the work from time to time. Messrs. R. E. Hanson and K. M. Ed devoted their mining theses to the investigation, and Messrs. J. C. Hall and G. W. Baker were engaged on the work during the summers of 1928 and 1929, respectively. The writer was responsible for the initiation and direction of these researches, which were made possible by the financial assistance of the Department of Mines of the Province of Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia is the leading Province in Canada for gypsum production, its output being about a million tons per year, or over 80 percent of the production for the whole of Canada. The commanding position of Nova Scotia in this regard is due to the abundant supply of gypsum and its proximity to areas of intense utilization in the eastern United States. The resources of gypsum are contained in a total area of 627 square miles of gypsiferous rocks, so that an enormous reserve of this mineral is available. Present operations are confined to the highest grade and most easily worked deposits close to water transportation.

This paper is a progress report on the study of mining methods and costs in the western United States and summarizes that part of the work pertaining to the undercut block-caving method of mining. Ore is mined on a large scale exclusively by the undercut block-caving method at the following six mines in the western United States: The Morenci branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, Morenci, Ariz.; the Ray mines of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. at Ray, Ariz.; the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. at Inspiration, Ariz.; the Miamo Copper Co. at Miami, Ariz.; the Ruth mine of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. at Ruth, Nev.; and the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation at Kimberly, Nev. The undercut block-caving method is also used at the mine of the Andes Copper Mining Co. at Potrerillos, Chile.

One of the problems studied by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Washington has been the re-treatment of table middlings. Hydraulic classification has given the best results. Instead of using the classifier to prepare the feed to the tables, as has been the practice for many years in ore dressing, it is used to separate part of a middling product that cannot be re-treated successfully on the table. Middlings are desirable in a table plant because the separation according to specific gravity is incomplete; that is, in the products of the table there is always an overlapping of free particles of coal and refuse that can be distinguished with heavy liquids such as are used in the float-and-sink test. The causes of this overlapping may be divided into two groups, those outside the table separation itself and those inherent in the table separation. The first of these groups includes, among other causes, the following: (1) poor adjustments of the table, (2) overloading or underloading the table, (3) irregularities in the quantity and quality of the feed, (4) irregularities in the power and water supply, and (5) a vertical dancing motion of the table deck due to weak foundations. These causes of overlapping are largely unnecessary in a properly designed and constructed plant; but whenever they are present they materially affect the character of the middling product, and hence the problem of re-treatment. The other group includes three additional causes: (6) small differences in specific gravity between coal and impurities, (7) a size-specific-gravity relationship of the coal and refuse particles in the table feed such that the sizing action of the table opposes the separation according to the specific gravity, and (8) shapes of particles that prevent a separation. The sixth, small differences in specific gravity, may be a very important reason for an incomplete separation. The change in specific gravity from coal to shale is always gradual and the designation of one part as coal and another part as refuse is arbitrary. The first autlientic description of an iron bath for the deposition of iron is probably that of Bottger in 1846, who used a bath containing ferrous sulfate and ammonium chloride. In 1861, Kramer deposited iron from ferrous chloride solution. Electrolytic iron was produced in 1869 by Bietz, who used it for making some magnetic tests. In the same year, Klein is. said to have worked out his process. Jacobil in 1869 described the results obtained in electroplating with iron on copper for making dies and plates for bank notes, by Klein's process. A letter from Klein to Jacobi describes the bath more fully. It consisted of FeS04 + (NH4)2SO4. Lenz2 described some properties of electrolytically precipitated iron. He used Klein's bath, FeS0, + MgSO4 + MgCO3, to neutralize and obtained fine-grained and hard iron. His conclusions were as follows: 1. Electrolytic iron and copper contain gases, notably hydrogen. 2. The volume of gas absorbed by iron varies within wide limits, but it is easy for iron to take up very considerable quantities of gas. 3. The absorption of gas is principally in the first formed layers of iron. 4. When iron is heated, gas begins to come off below 100°, principally hydrogen. 5. Heated to redness, reduced iron oxidizes in water, in part at least at the expense of the oxygen of the water, decomposing it and setting free hydrogen, which is partly or wholly absorbed. Siemens,3 in 1889, was the first to propose a general process embodying a step for leaching a sulfide mineral with ferric chloride or sulfate and a step for regenerating the leach and depositing iron on a cathode in a diaphragm cell. Lead-refining practice at the Bunker Hill differs to some extent from that of other United States refineries using the Parkes process, in that the Bunker Hill has reverted to a custom used years ago of making two kinds of skims, or crusts, in the desilverizing kettles. Also, this was the first refinery to adopt the liquation process for silver skims as developed in Australia. Both of these ideas were brought to the attention of the operator by H. S. J. Sommerset, in the summer of 1924, while he was visiting metallurgical plants in the United States, when he was general superintendent of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty., Ltd., of Port Pirie, South Australia. Since Mr. Sommerset's visit, United States patents on the liquation process have been issued to George Kenneth Williams, of Port Pirie, South Australia. At the Bunker Hill, the lead bullion is conveyed from the blast furnaces to the refinery in brick-lined cast-steel pots, each having a capacity of 5 tons, by a 20-ton electric crane, to which is suspended a Fairbanks-Morse suspension-type scale on which the gross, tare and net weights are obtained. The bullion is poured from the small bullion pots into either one of two kettles of 105 tons capacity, and when a kettle is entirely filled the heavy dross is removed by skimming it into a 5-ton pot suspended by the crane. The crane operator becomes proficient in the manipulation and a kettle is skimmed in a very short time. After the kettle is skimmed clean the bullion is pumped to a kettle of the same size alongside, where the bullion is cooled until it has almost frozen. By using two kettles for the drossing operation, one to accumulate the bullion where the heavy dross is removed, and then pumping to a clean kettle comparatively free of hangings, etc., it is possible to reduce the copper content much lower than if only one kettle is used in the operation. For purposes of coal classification it is desirable to know the composition and calorific value of the pure coal substance; that is, of the coal free from its ash-forming minerals. Two methods suggest themselves: (1) To free the coal from most of the ash-forming material previous to the analysis; and (2) to analyze the coal as received and calculate the analysis, with certain more or less arbitrary corrections, to the pure-coal basis. Calculation methods are obviously more apt to give correct results with low-ash than high-ash coals. With coals of unusually high ash it would appear preferable to remove, previous to the analysis, as much of the inorganic matter as possible, by float-and-sink or acid-treating methods. Effect of Ignition on Inorganic Constituents of Coal The need of corrections in calculating analysis to the pure-coal basis is due to the fact that the ash, as determined by ignition, is not the same, in either weight or composition, as the inorganic mineral matter in the coal. On ignition a number of changes occur in the coal such as loss of water of hydration of the shaly material, conversion of pyrite (FeS2) to ferric oxide (Fe203) with evolution of the sulfur as sulfur dioxide or possible fixation of more or less of the sulfur in the ash as calcium sulfate (CaSO4), and decomposition of calcite (CaC03) to calcium oxide (CaO). The amount of sulfur from pyrite which remains in the ash as calcium sulfate depends on the amount of calcite and pyrite in the coal. Certain coals high in both calcite and pyrite show relatively large amounts of sulfate sulfur in the coal ash. The determination of total carbon and hydrogen in coal includes, besides the organic carbon and hydrogen, the carbon of inorganic carbonates such as calcite, and the hydrogen of the water of composition of some of the ash-forming minerals.
