"INTRODUCTION During the war period the Bureau of Mines expanded its investigations on western coals principally in connection with Investigations of raw material resources for western steel production. Owing to the expansion of the steel industry, there was some concern regarding the availability of suitable coking coals; end because of the potential steel shortage, the production of sponge iron, using the lower-rank fuels, was considered. Work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines on exploration projects and on testing of coals both at the Central Experiment. Station at Pittsburgh, Pa., and at the Bureau of Mines Station at Golden, Cole.The results of these investigations are being published by the Bureau in several reports of investigations and technical papers. In making this resume of coal investigations, the work done by the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh in the Mining and Coal Carbonization Sections will be discussed and the investigations at Golden described in greater detail.INVESTIGATIONS OF WESTERN COALSThe Mining and Coal Carbonization Sections of the Coal Division, Bureau of Mines, under the supervision of A. L. Teeny es and J. D. Davis, respec¬tively, conducted many field investigations to locate and evaluate new sources of coking coals. Drilling explorations were made in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, and Washington and revealed two important new reserves of coking coal. The first one studied was the Willow Creek bed at Kemmerer, Wyo., which was reported in 1945.3/ A recoverable reserve estimated at 11,200,000 tons was blocked out, and samples of coal were extracted for coking tests. The coking properties of the coal were not quite equal to those of Sunnyside coal, but it was indicated that a 50-percent blend of the Willow Creek with Lower Sunnyside will produce a satisfactory metallurgical coke based on Columbia steel standards."

A study of the hydrometallurgy and electrowinning of cobalt from various domestic ores has been in progress at the Boulder City, Nevada, Experiment Station since February 1940. Previous reports covering certain phases of this investigation have been published. This report covers the research and pilot-plant work on the production of cobalt metal from cobalt-copper ores from the initial experimental work on crude ore through continuous operation. The ore types were from the Blackbird District, Lemhi County, Idaho. The initial tests were made with concentrated ore which was received by air mail and these experiments were expanded both in size and scope. After the laboratory was continued, improved, and extended tests were reported. Sufficiently advanced, a continuously operated plant producing 250 pounds of electrolytic cobalt per day was operated from June 15 through July 15, 1944.

During the past decade (1937 to 1947), including the war years of heavy demand for metals, the United States realized about one-eighth of its antimony requirements from domestic production, chiefly in Alaska. In World War II, our foreign supply sources became endangered; and uncertainty in our Far Eastern supply made this nation focus on Alaska’s mineral resources with a Production Gear that centered in the Bureau of Mines experimental station at College (Alaska). The development work known as District or central deposits. The strategic mining districts included that of central Alaska was reorganized at Ketchikan Mining Districts. Mines were located here had produced considerable quantities since 1901; but methods for exploration had come from 1936 to spring 1942, some $4 million produced in gold alone. Statistics relating to available ores are those selected by type and exploitation periods with wide variety applied. During the summer of 1941, as part of an extensive Geological Survey program continuing through funds provided by U.S., geological surveys spent six weeks mapping an area approximately two square miles surrounding mines. The mines working both surface & underground work employed these men in mapping exercises.

A program of investigation of strategic and critical minerals began in 1940 to examine and develop tungsten occurrences in the western United States and Alaska. During the years in which the nation was at war, this work was given special impetus to stimulate domestic production. This report is a compilation of results of the tungsten investigations in Alaska supplemented by certain data made available by the Territorial Department of Mines and is designed to include in its scope descriptions of all known tungsten occurrences in the Territory. Two areas in Alaska warranted special investigation - one at Gilmore Dome, 16 miles northeast of Fairbanks, and the other in the Hyder District, at the head of Portland Canal. Three tungsten properties - the Stepovich, Colbert, and Yellow Pup - are at Gilmore Dome. The Stepovich property, referred to sometimes as the Cleary Hill tungsten deposit, was worked by the Cleary Hill Mines Co. from April 1942 until May 1944 and was first examined by Robert S. Sanford and Norman Ebbley, Jr., engineers of the Bureau of Mines, in September 1942. The Cleary Hill Mines Co. by that time had explored an 800-foot strike length of the ore zone with 10 bulldozer trenches and was sinking an inclined shaft on ore in the central portion of the explored zone. In January 1943, the senior author, in company with Ebbley and Harry C. Doheny, supervising engineer of R.F.C., examined the property. Preliminary work by the Bureau of Mines began in May 1945, but actual exploration did not commence until late in June and continued until the end of October 1943. The deposit was examined by John B. Mortie, Jr., and William C. Overstreet, of the Federal Geological Survey, in 1942, and this study was continued in 1943 by Frank Byors, who also assisted the Bureau’s engineers on geologic problems. A magnetometer survey of this area was undertaken in 1942 by Henry Joosting and Eskil Anderson, engineers of the Territorial Department of Mines, and was completed with Bureau of Mines assistance in 1943. During 1943 the Bureau completed exploratory projects on the Cleary Hill mine and adjacent Colbert prospect. The field work on the Colbert property was begun early in July 1945 and continued intermittently until the end of October 1943, when it was recessed because of subzero weather. During September 1944, the Bureau of Mines established (by means of a few surface trenches) continuity between the Colbert mineralized zone, high on the dome, and the Yellow Pup vein, the lowest known tungsten mineralization in the area. It is generally recognized that any extensive program to develop the area as a whole logically would be carried out from the lower horizon.

"INTRODUCTION In the ammonium sulfate process for the production of alumina from clay,,3/ the clay is baked with amonium sulfate at about 400ºC. to form anhydrous ammonium alum and free ammonia or ammonium carbonate. The alum is leached from the baked product with water and circulating liquors and is purified by recrystallization. Aluminum hydroxide is precipitated by treating thus alum the alum the ammonia or ammonium carbonate from the baking step. Ammonium sulfate is recovered from the filtrate for reuse, and the aluminum hydroxide precipitate is calcined to produce high-purity alumina. In this process, as in other acid processes for the production of alumina, 4/ a large part of the iron in the clay is extracted. The iron tends to build up in the leach liquors and contaminate the crystals, so that its elimination is one of the most important problems in the process. A number of large clay deposits occur in the Western States. Those that have boon explored most extensively 5/contain an average of 24 to 30 percent available A12O3 and 2 to 8 percent available Fe2O3. 6/ The available Fe2O3 content of various other clays ranges from less than I percent to more than 20 percent. The available Al2O3 or Fe2O3 is usually 90 to 98 percent of the total but may be much less. In generals the iron content bears no fixed relation to the alumina content and may vary widely within a given deposit."

"INTRODUCTION The float-and-sink test 5/6/ is generally the first test used in determining the washing characteristics of coal. The simplest form of the test is that of using one solution of such specific gravity that the test sample is separated into ""float"" and ""sink"" fractions. In practice, however, a series of solutions is used, and the sample is separated into a number of fractions of a definite specific-gravity range. Analyses of a series of fractions of this type are often referred to as the ""specific-gravity analysis,"" and are of great value in the selection, construction, and operation of commercial washing equipment.The test is rather simple to use, provided a number of conditions are recognized and as many as possible held constant, such as:1. In laboratory testing, two types of solution are available -Aqueous solutions of calcium and zinc chlorides.Mixtures of organic liquids such as carbon tetrachloride, benzene, gasoline, bromoform, etc.2. Absorption of the solution by the coal,3. Solvent action of the solution toward the coal.4. Constancy of specific gravity during the test is affected by temperature changes, dilution, and evaporation.5. Personal technique of the test, such as the time the coal is in the liquid, rate of adding the sample to the liquid, stirring, time of draining, etc.6. Moisture content of the coal as tested."

"As a part of the wartime activities of the Bureau of Mines, metallurgical services were extended to other Government agencies engaged in purchasing and stock-piling some of the more critical and strategic materirals. At the request of George A. Easley, representative of the MetalsReserve Company, beneficiation studies were made on a sample of complex tin-tungsten ore from the Urania mine in Bolivia, South America.The low-grade Urania ore (1.9 percent Sn and 1.55 percent W03) contained a very complex of cassiterite and scheelite with iron sulfidesand quartz. The problem involved in concentrating this ore was the removal of sulfides and silica by stage flotation and gravity concentration for the production of a marketable tin-tungsten concentrate. The sulfides and primary quartzite were readily rejected, but the secondary quartz was intimately associated with cassiterite, and ultimate recovery depended on treatment of minus 560-mesh (theoretical) sizes.The ore was amenable to concentration by ore dressing. Seventy percent of the tin and 83 percent of the tungsten were recovered in a product that assayed approximately 20 percent Sn and 20 percent W03 and that met grade ""F"" specifications of the Metals Reserve Company for mixed tin-tungston concentrates."

"INTRODUCTION The use of scrap mica as an industrial raw material has grown rapidly during the past two decades. Demands by various industries for ground mica for use in the roofing, paint, rubber, plastics, and wallpaper trades as well as for less extensive uses in insulation, oil-well drilling, welding, pipeline enamel, decorative material, and for other purposes exceed present (1947) supplies.A small proportion of the raw material used comes from the Black Hills of South Dakota, where casual recovery has been practiced in the exploitation of pegnatite deposits for more valuable minerals. The annual production of scrap mica in the Black Hills for the years 1939 to 1946 is shown in figure 19. 4/Although small, this production of scrap mica materially augments the incomes of numerous operators.Volume production of mica would offer attractive opportunities for obtaining steady and more economical supplies of the rare minerals as byproducts. Appreciable supplies of beryl, lithia minerals, sheet mica, tantalite-columbite, and cassiterite could accrue. Furthermore, a stable scrap-mica production would complement the production of quality feldspar, for which the Black Hills pegmatites are noted, and would help balance the economy of pegmatite mineral production.Mechanical methods of separation are requisite to production of enough scrap mica to be generally profitable. Various phases of the characteristics end treatment of mica have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines. A bibliography of these reports is appended.In 1945 the Bureau of Mines conducted pilot-plant tests to recover scrap mica by selective screening of crushed pegmatite. More recently the problem has boon studied in the Pegmatite Research Laboratory to aid in developing technological methods by which scrap mica may be separated from crushed pegmatite."

"INTRODUCTION This paper is one of many reporting on various aspects of the Bureau of Mines program during World War II directed toward alleviation of shortages in certain critical minerals some of these papers are published as technical papers information circulars, and reports of investigations, of the Bureau of Mines or in technical journals.The investigation described in this report was begun as part of the Bureau, of Mines program to develop acid processes for the extraction of alumina from low-grade bauxites and clays. A domestic shortage of high-grade bauxite suitable for treatment by the Bayer process became acute as a result of World War II; and intensive search for a practical acid process using lower-grade alumina-bearing raw materials was therefore warranted.A survey of the various methods for extraction of alumina from clay has been presented in an early Bureau of Mines publication. 4/ The principal barrier to the successful operation of an acid process has been the difficulty experienced in developing a suitable commercial method for purifying the crude aluminum salts after the clay extraction is complete. Iron salts are the foremost contamination influence. A review of the more prominent procedures that have been proposed for separating iron and aluminum salts can be found in the well-known text on aluminum by Edwards, Frary, and Jeffries. 5/The majority of acid processes to extract alumina from clay employ sulfuric acid as the leaching agent, and the purification is thus reduced to the separation of iron and aluminum, sulfates."

"INTRODUCTION The future of oil production in the part of the Appalachian region included in southwestern Pennsylvania; West Virginia, and southeastern Ohio is directly dependent on the maintenance of existing wells. This report presents an analytical study of the methods used in oil-well reconditioning in this area. The study is part of a research program designed to evaluate those means of stimulating oil production that can effectively and economically maintain present oil-production rates and make it possible to keep existing wells in operation. Well-reconditioning work was curtailed during the war; therefore, an abnormally large number of wells in the Appalachian Region is now in need of repair. Because the lubricant content of Appalachian crude: oils is high and the refined lubricating oils an; particularly suited to use in high speed, high-temperature engines, the demand for these crude oils during the war exceeds, the maximum rate of production obtainable under wartime operating conditions. Increases in operating, expenses, inability to meet war-time reconditioning costs, and inflexible price structures caused the abandonment of an alarming number of wells during the past 4 or 5 years.As a means of increasing regional oil-production rates, new drilling in the older fields for primary production generally is uneconomical because reservoir pressures in most of the fields have virtually been depleted and the production rates of newly drilled wells are small."

The standard method of employing preliminary air-drying to determine the moisture in coal has been criticized with respect to the loss of heating value from excessive air-drying. By this method, the coal is air-dried at approximately 10-15° above room temperature with the loss in weight being less than 0.1 percent per hour, and then the residual moisture at 105°C is determined. The total moisture is calculated from these two values.

"INTRODUCTION An electrolytic process for the preparation of metallic cobalt has been developed recently in the Bureau of Mines Experimental Station at Boulder City, Nev. Chemical analysis shows this cobalt to contain impurities in small percentages, chief of which is nickel. It is desirable to be able to determine these impurities spectrographically. This report is concerned with a procedure for the spectrochemical determination of nickel in cobalt.Previous spectrographic work on cobalt was done by Breckpot and Mevis,/ who used the method of homologous pairs of lines. However, it was felt that a more detailed investigation was needed, employing the method of internal standards.ACKNOWLEDGMENTWe are indebted to B. G. "INTRODUCTION ..Although the occurrence of iron ore in Missouri was recognized by Marquette as early as 1673, the first known mining and smelting operation was conducted in 1815. This operation was near Arcadia, Iron County, the first of its kind west of the Mississippi-Ohio River system. Several small furnaces of short life were erected in Missouri in the ensuing 30 years. However, until the extensive deposits of Iron Mountain and Pilot Knob were opened between 1843 and 1850, the state remained a minor producer of iron. It was this district which was chiefly responsible for the prominent position Missouri held in the iron industry until the late 1880's. At this time the easily minable high-grade ores became exhausted and the discovery of the immense Lake Superior deposits depressed the raw-ore price to such an extent that any mines ceased to operate. 3/Small yearly production of iron ores continued in Missouri to the present. Owing to war demands for hard ore suitable for open-hearth steel, the M. A. Hanna Co., through its subsidiary, the Ozark Ore Co., reopened the Iron Mountain, deposits and installed new equipment in an old concentrator to handle the low-grade ores left from previous operations. At present, ore production is from open pits, but underground mining is contemplated in the future. About 2,000 tons a day of iron ore is treated by gravity concentration of material from the open pits in the immediate vicinity. The concentrate is shipped to the Birmingham, Ala., district and to Granite City, Ill., for smelting. The coarse tailing is sold for ballast and concrete aggregate. The iron requirements of the concentrate stipulated by the purchaser are not difficult to meet, but the phosphorus is frequently higher than desired. For 1946 the concentrates averaged 54.18 percent iron and 0.235 percent phosphorus with low sulfur. The Ozark Ore Co. concentrate, however, sometimes contains as much as 0.40 percent phosphorus. The phosphorus in ores from those portions of the deposits wherein the phosphorus occurs with siliceous gangue is readily rejected in the milling, but in much of the ore the phosphorus is associated with the iron and concentrated with the iron minerals. Selective mining is impossible owing to the spotty occurrence of the phosphorus mineral. Often within 5 feet the ore will change from low phosphorus to high phosphorus, and it would be expedient to find a method of rejecting enough phosphorus at the mill from the latter type of ore to meet the phosphorus specification."

"INTRODUCTION The Margerum bauxite district, in Colbert County, Ala. was investigated in December 1940 and in February 1943 by R. W. Smith of the Bureau of Mines .3/ A geologist of the Federal Geological Survey investigated and mapped the district in the fall of 1942.These preliminary investigations indicated bauxite showings over an area about a mile long by 2,000 feet wide. It was felt that the chances were good for finding one or more large deposits of low- to medium-grade bauxite. The location - within 35 miles of the alumina plant of the Reynolds Metals Co. atLister Hill, Ala. – made it especially attractive. A field office was established in Iuka, Miss., on May 19, 190,, and mineral agreements were executed with four landowners covering 1,146.6 cores.The drilling on the project was done under contract. The power drilling was supplemented by a labor crew that drilled hand-auger holes, where there was little or no gravel overburden, and sampled the old test pits.The Federal Geological Survey, after thorough study of the district, recommended 54 drill holes 4/ to delimit the known deposits and to search for possible extensions. After the drilling started, many of these locations eliminated, and others were changed upon the basis of information gathered from the holes as they were drilled."

"INTRODUCTION The behavior of particles in a sound field has long been of scientific interest since Kundt (1) 5/ made his classic experiments on some of the interesting effects of standing waves in cylindrical tubes. With the development of the electronic tube and its application to continuous generation of sound, experimental investigation of the Kundt tube was renewed (2). The more intense vibrations set up by a continuously vibrating diaphragm or rod produce even more striking effects than those observed by Kundt. Instead of the striations at the antinode produced by the stroked rod, then, wafer like barriers are formed at the antinodes, sometimes extending over the entire cross-section of the tube. Furthermore, it was observed independently by Andrade (3), Brandt, Freund and Hiedemann (4); and by investigators in the Bureau of Mines laboratories (5) that aerosols, such as ammonium chloride or tobacco smoke, could be flocculated quickly if passed through an intense sound field, particularly when a standing wave field was set up by a resonant enclosure. Because of its possibilities as a new means for removing suspended particles from dust-laden gaseous furance or smoke, the phenomena attending the behavior of suspended particles in a und field have been studied intermittently by the Bureau of Mines over the past decade.The first experimental work was done with a magnetostriction vibrator and a Hartmann air-jet generator as sound sources. It soon became evident that neither type was entirely satisfactory. Low mechanical efficiency is an inherent characteristic of magnetostriction generators, and the air-jet generator is difficult to control and does not permit accurate measurement of the acoustic output. The search for a suitable sound source led to the development of an electromagnetic generator, which is by far the most suitable for study of the effects of intensive high-frequency sound fields in gases (6)."

"INTRODUCTION Clay beds of southwestern North Dakota were investigated to determine (1) the average alumina content of the clays in four principal areas of occurrence, (2.) which, if any, would be the most feasible method of extracting alumina from the clays, and (3) whether the clays had any other commercial uses.During the investigation exposed sedimentary beds were examined for clay and the thickness and areal extent of outcropping clay beds in the more promising areas were measured. Four-principal areas of bentonitic clays, comprising 6,967 acres in Stark, Slope; and Billings Counties, N. Dak., were mapped and sampled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our natural resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION Preliminary tests of the Oyon coal constituted part of a wartime exploratory and development program in which many agencies participated. The general objective was to find new and adequate source of fuel and other raw materials for greatly expanded industry.The Oyon coal field, known for at least a hundred years to the mining people of Peru, offers a possible source of high-grade process fuel for the growing metallurgical industries of South America and the Pacific coast. Santolalla 4/ reports that low-volatile coal from this region was used in local smelting operations as early as 1850. It has been mined in very small quanti¬ties for many years and used in neighboring mining camps and villages. Small quantities are regularly used at Oroya for the manufacture of carbide, and in recent years small-scale coking operations in specially designed ovens in the region have demonstrated that these coals will make dense coke.During this long period of desultory operations many small openings have been made scattered over a wide area in this general region, indicating very extensive occurrence of the coal measures, although systematic exploration work has not been undertaken. However, current development work of the Banco Minero del Peru has opened up several substantially parallel highly inclined or vertical beds of workable thickness and has followed these deposits to sufficient lateral extent to prove fairly well the existence of substantial reserves on this property."

"INTRODUCTION Bauxite, in Appalachian Alabama, occurs in the Rock Run and Goshen Valley districts in Cherokee County; in Nences Creek Valley near Jacksonville; near Anniston in Calhoun County; north of Fort Payne in DeKalb County; near Ashville in St. Clair County; and near Talladega in Talladega County.In February 1942, Preston E. Cloud, Jr., assistant geologist, Federal Geological Survey, began a study of these bauxite deposits and the geology relating thereto.The Bureau of Mines established field headquarters at Piedmont, Calhoun County, in July 1942. Mineral agreements covering a total of 11,097 acres were executed with 15 landowners in the Rock Run district; 38 in the Goshen Valley district, covering 7,575.5 acres; and 3 in the Nances Creek Valley district, covering 988.5 acres. Drilling was done on the properties of 9 land¬owners in the Rock Run district, and on the property of 1 landowner each in the Goshen Valley and the Nances Creek districts. Drilling began October 26, 1942, and ceased on May 17, 1943.Power drilling was supplemented by a labor crew that drilled hand-auger holes in shallow deposits and sampled .old shafts, mines, and mine dumps.In all, 222 holes for a total of 13,250 feet were drilled. Of these holes, 88 penetrated bauxite but too low in grade to constitute ore."

"INTRODUCTION The Copper Flat area of the Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex., has been visited by numerous engineers 4/ of the Bureau of Mines and geologists 5/ of the Federal Geological Survey. In December 1944 the Bureau. 6/ proposed that geophysical work be done in that area in order to locate favorable sites for future company exploratory and development work. This geo-physical work was begun early in 1945 but never fully completed because of insufficient funds. The engineers who made the survey recommended that more work be done, especially to locate the bottom of the Copper Flat laccolith by resistivity-depth surveys. All known minable zinc-lead ore bodies had been found above this laccolith in the Copper Flat mine, but it was thought that other minable ore deposits should occur in favorable limestones beneath it. The geophysicists also recommended core drilling beneath the laccolith.In the summer of 1946, following some mapping by S. G. Lasky of the Federal Geological Survey, funds were appropriated for a Bureau of Mines project in the Copper Flat area. The project was completed in June 1947. 8/"
