"Rejection of pyrrhotite from pentlandite is of critical importance to the economics of nickel concentrate production and the main goal of the Strathcona milling operations. A joint team of XPS, Glencore Technology and Strathcona Mill personnel executed a comprehensive program of work to develop and implement strategies for increased Po rejection with focus on challenging ores containing high feed Po/Pn ratios (> 7) and significant hexagonal Po content (> 40% of total Po). This paper describes the team results including minerology, bench-scale flotation tests, and plant validation tests and modeling that have defined the path forward to improving the metallurgical performance and economics of the mill operation. Techniques to quantify hexagonal and monoclinic pyrrhotites were developed at XPS to assess the differences in their metallurgical behavior since their flotation responses are quite different. Mineralogical tools including QEMScan were extensively used to determine mineral liberation, associations, optimum grind size, and nickel deportment into pentlandite, pyrrhotite and non-sulphide gangue. Several reagents/strategies were evaluated during bench-scale flotation testing to significantly increase Po rejection. A significant shift in the Po-Pn selectivity and grade recovery curves was achieved using several strategies including the use of DETA and sodium metabisulfite, and regrind of the rougher concentrate and rougher cleaner/rougher tails.INTRODUCTION The Strathcona Mill is owned and operated by Glencore Nickel – Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations and has been processing Ni-Cu ores from the Sudbury Basin since 1968 (valuable sulphides: pentlandite (Pn) – (Ni,Fe)9S8 and chalcopyrite (Cp) – CuFeS2). Currently Strathcona Mill receives ore mined from two main sources in the Sudbury area and produces two concentrate streams – a nickel-copper concentrate that is shipped to the Sudbury Smelter and a copper concentrate that is sent to the Fonderie Horne (Glencore Copper, Rouyn-Noranda). The general flowsheet currently used at Strathcona is displayed in Figure 1. It is highlighted by separate feed circuits for regular grade Ni ores and high grade copper ores. The copper circuit has a preflotation stage prior to a rougher-scavenger stage, a copper-nickel separation circuit, and a pyrrhotite (Po) rejection circuit."

Flúor é muito usado em pós de molde aplicados no lingotamento contínuo de aços. Embora o flúor seja importante no comportamento de fusão, infiltração da escória e cristalização do filme de escória, ele tem algumas desvantagens uma vez que o flúor reage com a escória, produzindo substâncias como NaF e SiF, as quais, por sua vez, reagem com a água no resfriamento secundário, formando HF. Estas desvantagens levam a severa corrosão do maquinário e risco para a saúde dos funcionários da usina. Por isto, é necessário remover o flúor dos fluxantes. Pó fluxante para lingotamento de placas livre de flúor está sendo desenvolvido como resultado de uma parceria entre fornecedor de pós fluxantes e a siderúrgica. Relacionado a isto, matérias primas alternativas para substituir F na composição dos pós fluxantes foram investigadas. Pesquisas indicaram B2O3 como substituto em potencial de flúor para escórias de molde. Os testes industriais, feitos em uma siderúrgica brasileira, foram realizados com o objetivo de analisar seu comportamento durante a operação de lingotamento contínuo em aços de baixo carbono. Parâmetros tecnológicos como: absorção de inclusões, espessura da piscina líquida, consumo de pó fluxante e índice de erosão da válvula submersa foram monitorados durante o lingotamento contínuo com o objetivo de avaliar o desempenho do pó e de fornecer informações sobre sua influência na qualidade da superfície do aço. Os testes industriais de lingotamento de aços baixo carbono revelaram uma boa qualidade de superfície e redução na erosão da válvula submersa. Outros parâmetros estão em estudo.

In this paper it is shown how the “Zero Operator” concept on the casting floor has been reached by adoption of a standard 6 axis industrial anthropomorphic robot coupled with the most innovative machine vision technology. This has been achieved by automating all the operations related to the ladle and tundish activities, including shroud manipulation, powder addition, ladle nozzle identification, nozzle opening by lancing, temperature measurement and chemical sampling. Q–Robot CAST family products are the result of the successful alliance between industrial robotics and the most advanced technology in process automation. This led, for each production area, to the introduction of flexible automation in dangerous places, even where some degree of human intervention is still necessary. By using anthropomorphic robots, human operators can be reassigned to safer environments. Furthermore, robots are suited to deal with repetitive and labor intensive tasks thus guaranteeing a high process quality.

Significant value can be added to ore supplied from the mine to the mill by measuring its quality in real time and performing grade control additional to that within the mine. Responsibility for ore quality between the mine and mill stockpiles is not always clear due to operational siloes so geologists and mining engineers need to be involved collaboratively with metallurgists to optimise ore value prior to processing. Sensors, such as the GEOSCAN-M which utilises high specification Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA), that measure conveyed ore flow representatively (continuous and fully penetrative) and in real time have been used in the minerals sector since 2003 and have been successfully applied in multiple commodities. Quality can be measured within the mine where material is conveyed underground or in-pit. Bulk ore sorting is used to divert increments of waste from the ore stream to upgrade material sent to the crushed ore stockpile (COS) as well as to create run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles of different qualities to maximise blending opportunities and accommodate processing priorities, eg blending out deleterious content. The real time composition measurement can be combined with moisture and fragmentation analysis data for improved ore type characterisation, to control ore blending, for feedback to the mining schedule and block model reconciliation, and feed forward control for grinding and processing operations. The paper discusses various parameters measured and derived in existing operations that are used to maximise coarse waste rejection and metal recovery, optimise plant feed quality consistency, and reduce consumables; power, grinding media, water, reagents, and minimise fine tailings generation. Innovative geometallurgy applications are also discussed.

This study investigates nickel laterite porosity and its impact on geometallurgical modelling. We performed a detailed mineralogical study on a set of Ni-laterite samples originating from New Caledonia. Samples were analysed after heavy liquid separation by automated SEM (QEMSCAN®). Laboratory and QEMSCAN® modelling results do not correlate well. Ideal physical mineral properties such as mineral densities used in QEMSCAN® modelling do not match the actual physical densities of minerals. The presence of empty or water-filled pores can represent important amounts in minerals and change the overall density of a particle. An adequate modelling of real density separation of minerals and particles should consider the water-filled pores. The first step towards a better simulation was to integrate pores larger than 10 μm in diameter filled with water (density of 1 g/cm3) in the QEMSCAN® database. The results approached, but did not match the physical laboratory results. The second step was to identify nanometer to micrometer sized pores, which could not be identified by QEMSCAN®. It was possible to identify nanometric pores in enstatite, Fe-oxides, serpentine, talc and quartz, and radial aggregates of fibrous Fe-oxyhydroxides with high resolution SEM (HR-SEM). The quantification of those micro-sized pores was performed on 2D HR-SEM images using image-processing techniques developed in Python to calculate the nanometer to micrometer scale pores in each mineral. Despite the limitation of converting 2D imaging into 3D objects, in our case pore sizes and porosities, we were able to calculate a mean value of porosity for each mineral. The integration of this porosity in the calculation of particle densities yielded a good match between the QEMSCAN® model and the laboratory experiment results. Despite the complexity of a strongly weathered material, such as Ni-laterites, a good knowledge of the ore makes it possible to build reliable processing models. On December 12, 2018 at 4:14 AM EST, an earthquake registering a 4.4 magnitude on the Richter Scale occurred in central Tennessee. According to a survey posted on the USGS website, this earthquake was felt throughout the southeast and even as far away as Arnold Nebraska. That’s over 900 miles (1,448 kilometers) from the epicenter. We recorded the vibrations from this earthquake on 44 different seismographs that were set up with remote access to continuously monitor vibrations from blasting activities. Having this data gave us an opportunity to compare the vibrations caused by earthquakes and blasting. A simple observation of the amplitudes, frequencies, and durations is enough to notice that vibrations from earthquakes are very different than vibrations caused by blasting in mining and construction. We were also able to observe the dissipation of the vibrations from the earthquake and see if the low frequencies, that are typical of earthquakes, dissipate at a consistent rate. Regression calculations were performed in order to see if there was a good data fit and if a specific vibration prediction could be made based on the magnitude of an earthquake. “How does quarry/mining/construction blasting compare to the Richter Scale?” This is a very common question that we get from homeowners when discussing vibrations due to blasting activities. This paper is intended to provide some simple answers for such a complicated question. Both the Richter and Mercalli scales are compared to the particle velocities as they were recorded from this earthquake.

Watertightness is of central importance in hydraulic and underground structures but has always been associated with a risk, as demonstrated by the very high impact that water inflows have on the damage of linings and infrastructure (Howard, 1991; Sandrone and Labiouse, 2011). Concrete is vulnerable to groundwater and chemical contaminants in the soil. These can leach into the pores and cracks of the concrete and degrade its integrity, causing spalling and corroding the reinforcing steel. Moisture migrating into the building can also degrade structural elements over time and lead to mold and other hazards to occupants’ health. In this connection, the demands placed on the setup and detailed design of the seal depending on the negative influence by water on the one hand and on the other hand on the function of a construction in view to its watertightness classification. Thus, the reliable functioning of a seal is of particular significance in the case of traffic tunnels, which are not easily accessible for all subsequent repairs after the construction in seepage water and especially when located in a pressure water zone (risk–cost assessment). Requirements for the long-term efficiency and quality of underground structures have increased in recent decades. Today, the standard lifetime requirement for an underground infrastructure project is 100 to 120 years and, in some cases, even higher. This calls for high increased attention to the durability of the whole structure and of each individual element. Standards, which started as application guidelines given by the manufacturers, are available in the market since the 1980s and are constantly adapted to the current developments in various technical committees. Differentiations are made between: Manufactures application guidelines, case studies or published articles Test standards for the laboratory to guideline the testing procedures (air temperature, type of test equipment, dimensions, test speed, test duration, concentration, type of liquids, monitoring, tolerances, interpretation of results, documentation, etc.), developed by committees based on material and laboratory experts Application standards, which include test standards but also the related minimum performance requirements (values) for material, processing, and quality assurance (practical tolerances), developed by committees based on a wide range of experts (e.g., designers, construction companies, applicators, manufactures, owners, test institutes, quality engineers) and therefore also based on a wide field of experience, different views and up-dated case studies. The recycling of end-of-life concrete into new concrete is one of the most interesting options for reducing worldwide natural resources use and emissions associated with the building materials sector. The possibility to realize a larger re-use of silica aggregates from old concrete, strongly contributes to reduce environmental impact (reduced exploitation of natural resources, reduction of CO2 emissions, airborne dust production, etc.).To reach this goal, innovative processing techniques, as well as innovative sensing units and architectures have to be developed. In this perspective an analytical approach, based on hyperspectral sensing techniques, is proposed, discussed and critically evaluated in order to perform an automatic quality control assessment, finalized to maintain a high standard of concrete demolition waste, from the earliest stage of recycling to the further processing stages, according to the detected in-situ demolition waste characteristics. The paper deals with the analysis and the evaluation of the problems related to the integration of this approach with state-of-the-art demolition and building processes and procedures. Currently, more than 400 drilled shafts have been constructed by various contractors at the I-90/94 and I-290 Jane Byrne (Circle) Interchange, located near downtown Chicago, Illinois. Cross-Hole Sonic Logging (CSL) and Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) tests were performed to evaluate the integrity and concrete quality of the drilled shafts installed at this project. For Phase I of the project the shafts were tested using CSL methods, and the shaft integrity was identified by analyzing the First Arrival Time (FAT) and the signal strength (energy) measurements. For the major portion of Phase II, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) accepted TIP testing as a substitute for CSL at the request of the contractors. The CSL testing results indicated 54 percent of the tested shafts had anomalies, and 78 percent of these anomalies were located within the lower three diameters of the shafts. To date, TIP testing results indicated the shaft integrity was as expected and acceptable for the all 34 tested shafts. A review of the testing results and a discussion of the detected anomalies are presented. In addition, a comparison of both TIP and CSL measurements is presented in this paper.

By means of further developed machines and techniques and with growing experiences in jet grouting, the challenge of this building method becomes more and more complex. To keep the concerning risks as low as possible, the requirements on the quality assurance continuously in­crease. The construction of a 37.0m deep seated slab for the Amsterdam metro station Vijzelgracht in marine clay represents such a complex task. This paper summarises the required measures of quality assurance. In particular a new hydraulic measuring device is introduced with which it was possible to detect the column diameter of 2.6m at a depth of 37.0m during the production process and with a very high accuracy.

"There's no such thing as quality assurance; only quality control ... by inspection. "(1) A common misunderstanding in the procurement and construction of custom designed, fabricated pressure vessels and piping systems is that quality assurance can be achieved by simply referencing codes, standards, ISO 9002, QMS or other such programs in the contract documents. In the authors' experience, nothing could be further from the truth, not detrimental to the performance of the equipment than the exclusion of inspection activities and reliance upon warranties and "fit-for-purpose" clauses. Likewise, the expectation that fabricators, suppliers, or third party inspectors can provide such assurances is also unrealistic where they have limited knowledge of the process, material selection criteria, or limited technical resources. The development and successful execution of a quality assurance program is a collaborative effort by engineers, designers, material suppliers, equipment fabricators, and field inspectors with the full understanding and support of the end user.This paper presents an outline of the quality control activities undertaken by the authors for several recently completed and on-going hydrometallurgical projects. The activities include: prequalification of fabricators and sub-vendors, shop audits, material validation testing, material source control and verification, positive material identification of weld metal overlay, specialised welding inspection, contamination control for titanium and titanium-clad fabrication, eddy current and mass spectrometer (helium) leak testing of shell-and-tube heat exchangers, hot cycle testing of titanium clad equipment, tolerance verification for refractory lined equipment, final inspection and cleaning.

Most mine ventilation engineers are involved in ventilation planning and design in some capacity. Ventilation modelling software used by a competent experienced ventilation engineer is extremely useful in developing good ventilation designs by allowing assessment of a wide range of potential options. Unfortunately, ventilation modelling undertaken by persons who do not have sufficient experience or knowledge usually results in a façade that covers up a fundamentally unsatisfactory design. Ventilation models are produced for a wide variety of purposes including: fault-finding of a problem area in a mine and options analysis for resolution of such problems; a complete review or optimisation exercise of an entire mine’s ventilation system; or a much longer life-of-mine type of study. Models can be intended as the basis for studies with diverse purposes such as primary shaft or airway sizing, primary fan specification, examining re-entry times after blasting, resolving leakage or recirculation, or investigating the impact of fires or underground climate or cooling requirements. The concepts of ‘materiality’ and ‘fitness for purpose’ are essential to developing or using a ventilation model and serious mistakes have been made in wrongly using a ventilation model for purposes for which it was never intended, often because it is simply the most recent model on the mine site. Mistakes at this level often translate into faulty ventilation strategies and inefficient or ineffective use of scarce capital for ventilation projects. Validating a ventilation model is a time-consuming and expensive process and not every model must (or even should) be fully validated to meet the objectives at that time. This paper discusses the application of quality assurance in ventilation planning with particular respect to the ‘basis of design’ (BOD) as well as the standards for validating a ventilation model. It also provides a recommended way of dealing with non-conformances in measured versus modelled values of critical parameters in the model.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2015. The engineering company's participation in quality assurance in the mining industry is twofold. Not only must it have such a program to ensure the necessary high standards for its own design and construction of a minerals processing plant, but it is also responsible as the "engineer" for both the selection and the quality of purchased equipment which goes into that plant. It is in this latter role that the engineer finds the most difficulty, or controversy, since while it is relatively easy to control his own performance, this is not ncessarily so when dealing with companies, all with their own ideas or standards. The engineer has perhaps rather reluctantly become more involved with the quality assurance of purchased equipment. This is because he has been used to writing performance type specifications and expecting the equipment manufacturer to provide the degree of quality, and control of that quality, for the product to meet the specified operating conditions. However, this has sometimes placed the manufacturer in a difficult position since to remain competitive in today's market conditions, he cannot always insist on product improvements or options which may in the long run be vital to reliable operation of the equipment.

The purpose of this paper is to inform members of the coal producing and consuming community about techniques used by The Carter Mining Company to control product quality at a large surface coal mining operation. During the early years of mining operations, coal quality received adequate attention but the Company's main emphasis was to build up its production rate and minimize mining costs. While these goals are still of prime importance, coal quality has received substantial attention in recent years. A Company guideline that no coal shipment shall exceed any contract or company-imposed coal quality specification has been successfully implemented. To implement this guideline, geology and coal quality modeling procedures were improved, in-pit drilling and blending programs were refined, and detailed shipment procedures were developed. Background Surface coal mining of subbituminous C rank coal in the Cillette. (Campbell County) Wyoming area has become increasingly competitive during recent years. Prior to 1974, one small surface mine produced coal for local consumption. During the last ten years, 13 new surface coal mines have been constructed. Coal production from Campbell County, Wyoming totalled 88 million short tons (79.8 million metric tons) in 1983, the majority being shipped to electric utilities in the central and southern United States via unit trains having a capacity of 10,000 short tons (9,072 metric tons).

"Following damage caused by the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, the NZ$127.5million Christchurch Town Hall Restoration project is due for completion in 2018. The building is undergoing extensive repairs and a strengthening regime to meet New Zealand’s New Building Standard. One major aspect of the project is the stabilisation of the soil directly beneath the building using interconnected jetgrouting columns installed a cellular configuration, the purpose of this being to decrease the likelihood and severity of foundation movements caused by earthquake-induced soil liquefaction and lateral spreading. The soils encountered on the site ranged from cobbles and gravels through to sandy silts with a significant quantity of timber and rootlets. This wide variation of soil types presented a number of challenges with regard to effective and consistent treatment by jet grouting. The paper presents an overview of the quality assurance practices and also the testing regime adopted on this project.INTRODUCTIONMost of the deformation experienced by the Christchurch Town Hall structure over the course of the Canterbury earthquakes was caused by movement of the underlying ground. Two primary mechanisms of ground deformation were observed:- Liquefaction of the soils underlying the building foundation- Lateral spread of surface soils towards the free face at the river edge which runs 20 metres from the building. This mechanism also resulted in additional vertical settlement of the building foundations.The overall foundation design philosophy adopted by the project team for the Christchurch Town Hall Conservation Project has been to improve the ground directly beneath the structure to mitigate against these two mechanisms of ground movement. Additionally, a robust raft slab is proposed to distribute the foundation loading more evenly and increase the ability of the structure to resist lateral stretch of the underlying ground.The ground improvement system proposed by the Client’s geotechnical consultants, Tonkin &Taylor, comprised a cellular arrangement of interlocking jet grout columns, this arrangement would effectively encapsulate the soil within the cells preventing lateral spread.In total 1,097 interlocking jet grout columns, extending over the entire floor plan of the structure, were required to satisfy the design requirements."

"Control of analytical data quality is usually referred to in the mining industry as Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC), and involves the monitoring of sample quality and quantification of analytical accuracy and precision. QAQC procedures normally involve using sample duplicates and specially prepared standards whose grade is known. Numerous case studies indicate that reliable control of sample precision is achieved by using approximately 5% to 10% of field duplicates and 3% to 5% of pulp duplicates. These duplicate samples should be prepared and analyzed in the primary laboratory.Bias in the analytical results can be identified by inclusion of 3% to 5% of the standard in each sample batch. Several different standards are used, with values spanning the practical range of grades in the actual samples. A blank (a sample in which the concentration of metal of interest is below detection limit) should also be included. Standard samples alone cannot identify biases introduced during sample preparation, and therefore approximately 5% of the duplicate samples (coarse rejects and pulp) should be processed and assayed at another, external, reputable laboratory.This paper discusses techniques used for estimation of errors in precision and accuracy, and overviews diagnostic tools. It is shown that one of the most commonly used methods, the Thompson-Howarth technique, produces consistently lower results than other methods. These results reflect the nature of this method, which relies on the assumption of a normally distributed error, and thus produces biased results when errors have a skewed distribution. This study concurs with the suggestion of Stanley and Lawie (2007: Exploration and Mining Geology, v. 16, p. 265-274) to use the average coefficient of variation (CVAVR(%)) as the universal measure of relative precision error in mine geology applications: Le contrôle de la qualité des données analytiques est habituellement désigné sous l’appellation d’Assurance et Contrôle de la Qualité (ACQ), elle implique le suivi de la qualité des échan¬tillons et la quantification de la reproductibilité et la précision analytiques. The paper deals with the general principles underlying quality control in coal preparation plants, namely, constant quality and close adherance to acceptance limits. It also describes how control of ash content is ""generally hampered by the problem of coal sampling .and the long duration of the ash analysis and how these difficulties may be overcome.Quality control can be effected in several ways. Thorough blending wll reduce variations appreciably, except those of long trend. The latter can be detected by automatic sampling and quick ash analysis. At present, under favourable conditions, a system of half-hourly ash determinations with an accuracy of 0.5 to 1.0 per cent can be realized, to the effect that trends with a 'wave length' of more than two hours cu be eliminated within the limits of accuracy of the ash figures. The general solution of the problem is a combination of blending, accurate sampling, quick ash determination, and statistical analysis of the pattern of ash distribution.The use of statistical methods of analysis, such as the t test and F test, is •discussed at some length in order to emphasize the importance of the correct evaluation of observational data if there is to be confidence in the validity of test results.General ConsiderationsCOAL, as a fuel, is too cheap for a long haul across the country. The limiting distance depends on the price of the local competitive fuels, and, as the price depends to a great extent on quality, so does quality, to the same extent, command the market."

Gécamines is the world largest cobalt producer with about 60 % of the Western World production. During the last ten years, its annual production varied from 5,400 to 14,600 t/year. The actual cobalt production capacity of Gécarnines is 18,000 t/year and could be increased in the near future if necessary. Cobalt is presently produced at the Shituru plant by an old in-pulp electrolysis process and in Luilu, by electrolysis of a clear weakly acidic solution. The Shituru Cobalt quality is lower than the Luilu one. For that reason, part of the Shituru Cobalt is fire refined and cast into granules. Large efforts have been succesfully accomplished to improve the cobalt quality. This has been made possible by a better knowledge of the purification processes and of the electrolysis parameters.
