Los sistemas de protección pasiva contra incendios son importantes en el diseño de todo tipo de proyectos -particularmente mineros- donde los estándares de seguridad son más exigentes. En este sentido, el presente texto describe la importancia de la protección pasiva contra incendios ya que evita una catástrofe y minimiza los daños materiales como salva vidas. El uso de este sistema desarrolla tres tres objetivos: la creación de compartimentos seguros capaces de contener y evitar la propagación de la llama, gases y humos, la protección de las estructuras, lo que evita el colapso prematuro de la edificación y la extracción de humos, principal causante de pérdidas humanas y la extracción de humos, principal causante de pérdidas humanas.

Many miners are exposed to dangerously high levels of noise on a daily basis. Over the past 15 years, a continually increasing number of occupational hearing loss has been reported from the mining community in the United States, of which, more than 95% is attributed to prolonged noise exposure. Although the noise exposure levels may differ between coal miners and metal and non-metal miners, in the absence of noise control at the source, the solution is the same: use of personal hearing protection devices (HPD). While protecting the miners? hearing it is also essential to no longer hinder their ability to communicate. With access to an advanced HPD that is customized to the miners? ears we are able to combine these two requirements. Using an intra-aural instantly custom molded HPD miners are protected from high levels of noise. The HPD is equipped with wireless capabilities, and contains both a speaker and an In-Ear Microphone (IEM). Therefore, the miners? speech may be captured from inside the ear and transmitted to the remote listener. This IEM signal is relatively noise-free since it is isolated from the background noise. The IEM speech signal, however, is ?boomy? and is missing some high frequency content, making fricative consonants hard to understand. Nonetheless, the IEM speech signal is correlated with the natural speech signal and may be manipulated through statistical techniques to more closely resemble natural speech. By improving the intelligibility and quality of the IEM signal, numerous applications may be enabled. One use of the enhanced IEM signal will be for radio communication. Using wireless radio communication in a noisy mining environment is sometimes the only practical and affordable solution to allow communication between miners equipped with personal hearing protection devices. Traditionally, one of the weaknesses of such wireless radio communication lies in the lack of designating receivers: whether they are the intended receiver or not, all those carrying a radio receiver are subjected to the broadcasted signal. The current work will detail a new concept of a "radio-acoustical virtual environment" where the radio signal will only be received by miners within a given spatial range, such range depending on the user?s vocal effort as well as the ambient and perceived background noise levels.

0 N March 5, at Carnegie Hall, Cleveland, the Ohio Section held a joint meeting with the Cleveland Engineering Society, and the local sections of the American Chemical Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society for Steel Treating. Prior to the meeting there was an informal dinner attended by 50 men. Then followed an address, "The Principles of Corrosion Protection," by Ulick R. Evans, the well-known British specialist in this problem. There were 266 present, presided over by Zay Jeffries, president of the American Society for Steel Treating and a member of the Cleveland Engineering Society. The address was well received and some discussion followed

Since 1910 the Bureau of Mines has given training in the care and use of oxygen breathing apparatus under conditions that may exist during mine fires and after mine explosions. In 1929 the Bureau supplemented this instruction by initiating a course in advanced mine rescue training to prepare mine officials and others to organize men for mine rescue and recovery operations. The course of instruction has been developed and expanded since its inception to keep abreast with new ideas, methods, and equipment. Four miners' circulars were issued to be used in the training course. The first of this series (Miners' Circular 33) deals with mine gases and the various methods of detecting them; the second (Miners' Circular 34) gives instructions for sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres; the third (this circular) describes methods and equipment for protection against mine gases; and the fourth (Miners' Circular 36) explains procedures in sealing and unsealing mine fires and in conducting recovery operations, These circulars have been revised from time to time to keep them up to date.

It is well understood that designers and constructors must protect the existing surroundings of tunnel construction, particularly in the selection of excavation methods, ground support and waterproofing systems. However, while this can readily address the existing conditions, the tunnel owner and the designers need to consider the changes that are likely to occur during the life of the tunnel. It is typical for transport infrastructure to have a design life of at least a century. While the effects of constructing the tunnel on its surroundings are a short-term effect, the converse case, the protection of the tunnel, and the need to maintain its integrity, will affect developments over and adjacent to the tunnels beyond the foreseeable future. Decisions made during the design phase have the potential either to facilitate development or to hinder it for the long term.Examples principally from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong show that the provision for future development is addressed in different ways. These have ranged from making no specific provision, putting the onus onto developers to ensure that the tunnels are not affected adversely, to including a loading allowance for future development in the performance specification or contract documents for a tunnel project.These two contrasting approaches have strong points and risks. A highly prescriptive definition of permissible loadings around the tunnel can provide unambiguous guidance for the approving authority and the developer, but runs the risk of being overly conservative to allow for all the envisaged works, while still missing a detrimental combination of effects that theoretically complies with the specified requirements. In contrast, a general requirement to not cause detriment is open to interpretation and potentially difficult negotiations to reach agreement between the tunnel owner/operator and developer and finally the appointed contractor (probably with no contractual relationship with the tunnel owner).In practice, a combination of prescriptive and performance requirements is likely to provide the optimum combination of clarity and flexibility. Several studied have recently shown that the use of non-wetting additives is not always a sufficient solution to improve the corrosion resistance of refractories against molten aluminum. Once in contact with liquid aluminum, the coarse aluminosilicate aggregates, which do not benefit from the protective effect of non-wetting additives in the matrix, may be corroded. In some cases, the corrosion of aggregates, especially those containing a significant amount of free silica and/or alkalis, promotes corrosion in the surrounding matrix. The present work explores the possibility to protect the poor corrosion resistant aggregates via a lining procedure. A slip casting method, using either alumina or celsian-like composition based slurries, has been applied for lining of a series of aggregates. The results from this study show that such linings may prevent efficiently the corrosion of aluminosilicate aggregates. This work also analyzes the effects of firing temperature and lining quality on the corrosion behavior of aggregates

Magnesium-based alloys are of growing interest for many industrial applications due to their favourable strength-to-weight ratio and excellent castability. Mass reduction has advantages in many industrial sectors for example, in automotive, a reduction in mass improves fuel economy and can lead to more efficient mechanical systems by reducing the weight of moving parts like wheels, gears, pistons. However, the relatively poor corrosion and wear resistance limits the use of magnesium and its alloys in many potential applications. The patented Keronite® plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process enables manufacturers to overcome such problems and, in its latest generation equipment has been developed to industrial realisation for high volume production. This paper presents microstructural characteristics and corrosion performance of two most widely used high pressure die-cast magnesium alloys AZ91D and AM6OB with a duplex corrosion protection coating system that comprised a thin Keronite pre-treatment followed by a subsequent automotive grade final powder coat.

Blasting in the mining industry is being transformed, and can no longer be treated as an art or a practice purely dependent upon experiences of individuals. Examples of key drivers that have demanded consistent and more accurate blast results are initiatives to control pit-wall damage to help mine steeper pit slope angles, to control damage to underground opening operating in close vicinity of the open pit mine. Such situation exists at Rampura Agucha open pit lead zinc mine, which is producing 5.7 Mt/a of ore and has started its underground part, which is slated to produce initially 2–2.4 Mt/a and 4.5 Mt/a in the near future. The open pit mine is currently working at 326 m depth and is designed to reach 421 m deep. It has been planned to operate the underground mine maintaining 50 m parting from the planned ultimate level of the open pit mine.Presently, open pit and underground mines are being operated simultaneously. The present average depth of underground working lies between 370 and 410 m below the surface level. Sometimes explosives up to 95 978 kg are being detonated in a blast round in open pit mine. These blasts are often apprehended as a danger to the safety and stability of underground openings. It was decided to document the impact of open pit blasting in the openings of underground workings, so that preventive measures may be taken for the safety and long-term stability of the underground mine. The impact of 86 open pit blasts has been documented in the underground openings and 258 blast vibration data has been recorded. The vibrations were recorded simultaneously in the roof, side walls and at floor levels. The highest levels of vibrations were recorded in the roof and the lowest levels at the corresponding floor levels. The pillars experienced lower level of vibrations than the roof. Blast designs were optimised at open pit mine to control vibration in view of long-term safety and stability of the underground openings. The vibrations generated due to detonation of explosives with shock tubes and electronic delay detonators have been recorded in underground openings for comparative assessment. Ground vibration recorded at roof, pillar and floor were analysed separately and threshold value of the vibration for the safety of underground workings has been determined based on the rock mass rating of the roof rock.CITATION:Singh, P K, Roy, M P, Paswan, R K, Shekhawat, L S and Joshi, A, 2015. "This paper will discuss the successful installation of seawalls for the first phase of a project in Long Beach in California known as the Naples Island Permanent Seawall Repair – Phase 1. How an unconventional method of pile driving resulted in the reduction of the duration of the project while using less space and maintaining minimal noise impacts to accommodate neighbors will also be discussed. Included in the paper will be how non-vibratory equipment used on this project also significantly minimized the risk of disturbances as well as settlement on residential properties; which in turn greatly reduced the risk of damage to existing structures. The first phase of a 6-phase project along a section of the canals with tight clearances and proximity to residents included the installation of a 1,912 linear-foot steel sheet pile wall system in front of the existing deteriorating walls from January until March 2015.INTRODUCTIONThis project was located in the Naples Island neighborhood of Long Beach in southern Los Angeles County, California. After 80 years of the same seawall structures lining the canals of this beautiful neighborhood, the City of Long Beach Department of Public Works decided that it was time to better protect the area’s multi-million dollar homes by repairing its crumbling seawalls. The City realized that the walls will only become worse due in part to several concerns, including bending failure for the already deflecting walls. According to the City, certain sections of the walls had a significant risk of global failure if the area experienced a “moderate” near-source earthquake (City of Long Beach, CA, 2014b). Although the seawalls were in need of major repair, this would not be simple. Due to the tight clearances of the seawalls between the homes and canals, installation would be difficult with heavy, conventional construction equipment.Phase 1 of the project involved installing sheet piles on the water side in front of existing and aging vertical concrete seawalls between the Ravenna and Toledo Bridges along the Rivo Alto Canal. See Figure 1 for the General Plan for Phase 1. Financing for this project by the City’s Tidelands Capital Improvement’s Division allowed the construction to begin in a timely manner. However, the challenges for the City included regulatory restraints that further complicated the construction in terms of the duration of the project due in part to numerous regulations from several regulatory agencies."

Any man-made structure will eventually decay, but we are basically concerned with the prevention of corrosion within a fairly limited time span. How corrosion can be minimized by design, the removal of oxides and a careful choice of paint systems is discussed, and mention is made of the electrical nature of most anticorrosive systems. Also discussed are the characteristics of certain paint binders and how mechanical properties will differ for various environments. Corrosion of a substrate by acidic breakdown products of some paints is mentioned in conjunction with a discussion on convenience versus ultimate performance. A brief mention is made of the three main components of a paint system, and the principal types of paint are placed in broad categories, with the main strength and weaknesses of each type listed.

RECENTLY completed experimental work, carried out in the department of geology at the University of Wisconsin, aiming at a prevention of silicosis in industry has been reported in the American Mineralogist. A vast amount of work on silicosis has been reported in the literature, the clinical aspects having been especially well covered. A host of critical observations have been made on the variations in the nature of the silicosis problem in different environments, and a great deal of valuable experimental work has helped to clarify these observations. At present a greater amount of information of a critical sort is available than ever before, which affords a more sound basis for interpretive thought. It has been observed in industry that essentially pure silica dust gives rise to silicosis. Jones would modify this conclusion to place the responsibility on sericite, a silicate mineral present in the siliceous dust. Material such as granite dust, which carries a high free silica (quartz) content, is also a silicosis hazard. But sericite, too, is usually present in granite. In general it is widely believed that silicosis is caused by the presence in the lung of silicic acid regardless of the source. This view is adopted here.

"Abstract -Biotite from aplite that appears to have crystallized simultaneously with disseminated Cu-Mo mineralization at MacLeod Lake in northern Quebec yields K-Ar dates in the range 2032 ± 44 Ma to '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. The mean value, 2065 Ma, is some 400 Ma younger than the 2485 ± 64 Ma date obtained from a hornblende concentrate separated from a granodiorite sill that is spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with the disseminated Cu-Mo deposit. The mean biotite date of 2065 Ma at MacLeod Lake, a K-Ar date of 2055 Ma reported from an area 50 km east of MacLeod Lake and published dates of about 2000 Ma for galenas from the Chibougamau Cu-Au ores, suggest a widespread thermal and mineralization event, in that part of the Superior Province east of James Bay, that differs from the common late Archean mineralization that is related to volcanism and metamorphic-intrusive activity.Sommaire - Les datations au K-Ar sur des biotites qui auraient cristallisé en même temps que la minéralisation disséminée en Cu et Mo dans une aplite mise en place au Lac MacLeod, au nord du Québec, s'échalonnent entre 2032 ± 44 Ma et '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. The Tapping Camera Prototype (TCP) is an instrument being developed to record and analyse video of the molten metal stream entering a tapping crucible as it is tapped from an aluminium reduction cell. The development aims to provide potroom floor operators with continuous real time vision of the tapping process and provide an alert in the event of excessive bath contamination in the extracted metal stream. Longer term the system may provide sufficient data to enable control of the tapping process. The TCP mounts a wireless camera and periscope to view the molten metal stream via a peephole in the tapping crucible. Real time video is recorded to either digital video tape or computer disk for subsequent video analysis to quantify the bath material drawn into the tapping crucible with the molten aluminium. The images transmitted by the camera are available on a handheld LCD video screen. This work is an initiative of the CSIRO?s Light Metals Flagship.

"Analytical and experimental work has shown that achieving the full inelastic lateral capacity of a pile may require the formation of a plastic hinge below ground level, in the pile shaft. The confining action of soil about the pile shaft was further been shown to greatly enhance the ductility capacity of the pile. An experimental program was therefore undertaken to build in the effect of external confinement through the addition of a GFRP jacket to the subgrade plastic hinge region. Two piles were thus modified, and compared to an unjacketed pile in a test rig which simulated a subgrade moment pattern and soil confinement. The ductility achieved by the jacketed piles was found to be substantially lower than an unjacketed control specimen. Failure mode of the jacketed specimens was also undesirable, involving complete tendon rupture and sudden loss in capacity IntroductionSeismic loading of concrete pile shafts can result in a demand for inelastic response. In the case of a superstructure supported by a single pile (i.e., a pile-column forming a single-column bridge pier, in which there is no rotational restraint at the top of the pile}, a plastic hinge will form below grade, at a depth which varies with soil properties and above-grade height of the center of seismic mass.In the case of a superstructure supported by multiple piles, there is rotational restraint, and the connection will experience inelastic action first. However, development of the full lateral inelastic capacity of the pile may call for the formation of a second, subgrade plastic hinge (fig. 1 )."

WHEN we consider the efforts made in Europe to promote the physical and moral well-being of the working classes, the question is suggested whether in this country, where, theoretically, every man is peculiarly the arbiter of his own destiny, we may not be too prone to expect every man to take care of himself, and neglect to make those provisions for the welfare of the employed, demanded alike by enlightened economy and humanity. In the older countries, where the disproportion between capital and labor is greater, and the working classes are more dependent, their welfare largely occupies the attention of employers. The subject is involved in the problem of the just relations of capital and labor, and we are rapidly approaching the time, if we have not already reached it, when a generous paternal interest in the welfare of the employed should be more generally manifested. It is a subject which is of special importance to mine-owners and engineers in this country, especially to those located in the coal regions. My own attention has been particularly directed to it by a visit made to the Hassard collieries, a few miles from Liege, Belgium, under the direction of M. Andrimont. This celebrated engineer has established a comfortable home for the miners near the mouth of the shaft of the mine. It has been highly successful and beneficent in its results, and may to a great degree be regarded as a, model for such undertakings. It is known as "Hotel Louise," this being the name of Madame d'Andrimont, who laid the corner-stone of the building April 4th, 1871. The structure is of brick, upon three sides of a square, and

"An average of 1.2 fatalities occur per year in underground coal mines in the United States when a miner is struck or pinned by a remote-controlled continuous mining machine. Proximity detection technology provides a means to prevent these types of accidents by disabling all machine motion when a miner is in close proximity. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed the intelligent Proximity Detection (iPD) system, which continuously tracks the position of miners near the machine and disables only those machine motions that could cause a pinning accident. This system, previously demonstrated using non-permissible proximity detection hardware, has now been shown to be effective when implemented using an MSHA-approved system as a platform. Performance tests have shown accuracy, repeatability, and stop zone identification to be comparable to or better than the system demonstrated with non-permissible hardware. INTRODUCTION Underground coal mining room-and-pillar operations typically use Continuous Mining Machines (CMMs), such as the one shown in Figure 1. When CMMs first became available, they were operated from an on-board operator’s compartment that protected operators from roof falls and other hazards but severely restricted visibility and subjected them to machine vibration and high levels of dust and noise. To solve these problems, remote controls were developed to operate CMMs. Now CMM operators are free to position themselves for best visibility of each mining task and are no longer subjected to the rough motion of the CMM during mining operations or the dust and noise generated by the machine. However, this technological advance removed operators from the protection afforded by the operator’s compartment and exposed them to the hazard of being struck or pinned by the CMM or other large moving machines."

THIS is a metallurgical war. More than ever before, the mechanized forces and the air-borne warfare are deciding campaigns. Both of these are primarily dependent upon metals. There are two ways of increasing the effective supply of these metals when the demand is greater than the total over-all supply. The American custom, when a shortage of anything develops, is to get more. In the case of some nonferrous metals this has been done. For example, our potential peak output of magnesium will be almost one hundred times the prewar production. Output of aluminun has also been tremendously increased, and production of other metals is being stimulated by every possible means. Our enemies, however, have another successful method of increasing the effective supply of a material, and that is, to eliminate entirely all nonessential uses, and also to use, in essential applications, alternate materials wherever possible. Sometimes, ersatz material is inferior to the original, and consequently does not do the job as well. Often, however, it has been found superior, and many substitute items are now being used both by industry and by the military which will continue even when the original material again becomes available.

The objective of the research in this project is to develop a knowledge based expert system for aiding the planning of mine ventilation systems. This system focuses on mine ventilation system design from a coal mine dust control standpoint. It is recognized that mine ventilation system design is an engineering problem involving not only rote numerical calculations to solve the pressure quantity problem but also substantial judgement and expertise to analyze a problem situation and Interpret the results of an algorithmic program. The thrust of this project is to i) extract this knowledge from public domain sources and recognized experts in industry, government and academia, 11) represent this knowledge in the form of IF ... TI-IEN rules in an expert system (ES) and 111) interface the developed expert system with a mine ventilation network analysis program vis. PSUMVS (Pensylvania State University Mine Ventilation Simulator). By providing the numerical computing and qualitative reasoning aspects of mine ventilation system design in a single Integrated system, better quality decision support will be made available to apprentice users.

"INTRODUCTION The major objective of our research is to help reduce the incidence and severity of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP). To that end, this project is designed to improve our understanding of the processes that lead to pulmonary dysfunction following mine dust exposure, and how those processes might be interrupted or attenuated. The response of the lung ' to inhaled particles is complex, and the course of development of disabling CWP is slow and unpredictable. From among the numerous cellular and molecular interactions involved in the pulmonary response to inhaled particles, this project is focussed on the role that the pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM) may play in regulating the activity of fibroblasts.The PAM is the lung cell that has the most immediate and the most obvious interaction with inhaled particles. Within a short period after particles are arrested in the alveolus of the lung, they are phagocytized (engulfed) by these specialized cells. The PAM then has a diverse potential repertoire of subsequent activities. Which reaction actually ensues is determined, in large part, by the nature of the phagocytized _particles. Activated PAMs produce a variety of products that may affect adjacent lung tissue, including superoxide free radical, elastase, collagenase, prostaglandins, platelet activating factor, etc. Those may well be important in the pathogenesis of CWP, but they are beyond the scope of this project. Background information that is cogent to this project has come primarily from investigations using animal models of silicosis and asbestosis. PAMs that have ingested silica particles synthesize and release molecules that control the behavior of surrounding cells. One such mediator is interleukin-1 (IL-1), a molecule that plays a central role in many aspects of the response to injury. It can stimulate fibroblasts (the cells that help to hold tissues together) to release the enzyme collagenase, resulting in breakdown of the structural collagen fibers that support the lung tissue. IL-1 also stimulates fibroblasts to undergo mitosis and to proliferate, which is an initial stage of fibrosis. Certain stimulants cause PAMs to release fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) that are distinct- from IL-1. Under other circumstances activated PAMs synthesize and release molecules that stimulate fibroblasts to accelerate synthesis of collagen fibers, thus contributing to fibrosis. Although these observations provide a valuable precedent for analysis of the mechanisms involved in CWP, their relevance to CWP cannot be assumed since most of those studies involved macrophages or fibroblasts obtained from tissues other than the lung, and because almost none of them have used CMD as the stimulating particles. Therefore, the goal of this project is to learn how exposure to CMD affects the behavior of PAMs, and in turn how products of dust-exposed PAMs affect fibroblasts and the process of fibrosis in the lung."
