TEN miles from Hartsel, near Antelope springs, in Park county, Colorado, there is a large area of unconsolidated lake beds, which are interesting because at least a part of the lacustrine sands contains in the aggregate an immense amount of gold. During 1906, one of the arms of this dessicated lake was fairly well prospected with shafts and cuts by an Eastern company to test its value, as favorable amounts of gold had in some instances been found upon it. The claims of the company contain about 5,000 acres of the beds; but this is only a small portion of them, a south branch from a main body, which is at least 7 miles in diameter, with other and very wide lateral gulches, paralleling the one herein described on the east and west. A certain amount of digging and sampling was done in the outside areas; but the result was evidently unsatisfactory, since the work was discontinued. his section of Colorado has not been studied geologically, and the age of the ancient lake is unknown. It is probably Quaternary. I spent two weeks on the ground, in September and October, 1906, but was quite absorbed in the sampling. I looked, however, for terraces on the rim-rock and other evidences of movement and erosion, but did not find anything to denote an earlier age than the Quaternary. The granite rim-rock may be Archean; S. F. Emmons says that some of the granites in central Colorado are as old as that. The rim-rock as observed is a gray quartzose biotite-granite, except a small area in Sections 3 and 34, where it is a felsitic (?) breccia. The breccia is silicified by solfataric action at the corner near Shaft No. 7, in Section 34; but this action is older than the sands and does not extend to them. The shaft averaged 50c. per ton, more than twice as much as the rest.

The conversion of moisture and ash free (maf) coal to pyridine solubles and gas was investigated in a microautoclave batch reactor. Two washed Kentucky coal samples (KY # 9 and KY #11) were studied in liquefaction solvents of various donor strength. The liquefaction solvent hydrogen donor strength was varied by changing the tetralin content of a mixed 1 -methylnaphthalene-tetralin mixture. Primary liquefaction conversions in excess of 90 wt% in 10 minutes of reaction time @ 700° K (427OC or 800°F) were achieved with liquefaction solvents of moderate donor strength, i.e. 40% tetralin. "This paper describes the operation of a rope haulage used as the main system of transportation in an underground coal mine. Prince Colliery, which is operated by the Cape Breton Development Corporation, has been in operation for 23 years and produces 1.2 million tonnes of coal annually. The mine extends a distance of 8000 metres under the Atlantic Ocean. All personnel and supplies are transported by means of an endless rope haulage system consisting of a train of rail cars that are operated by an electric engine on surface. The wire rope is 15 km long and weighs 63 tonnes. The system is believed to be the longest of its type used in an underground coal mine. The design of the system, safety features of the haulage, and problems encountered during the design and construction are described. IntroductionCoal has been mined commercially in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia since the 1800s. Several coal seams that are part of the Sydney coal fields, dip toward the north and northeast out under the Atlantic Ocean at angles between -4 and -15 degrees. Coal has been economically mined at depth in excess of 1200 m and more than 11 km from the coastline.Traditionally, single and double drum hoists have been used to haul the coal to the surface and also for transporting the workers and the materials required for mining up to 8 km. With the introduction of mechanized mining methods in the late 1960s, conveyor belts began to replace rope hoists for coal transportation. Improvements in hoisting system design also allowed for drums that could wind up to 6100 m of 32 mm wire rope in 15 layers.These hoists are commonly referred to as “drop hoists” because they take advantage of the gradient of the slope to assist in allowing the mine car train to reach the end of travel. The cars travel on steel rails and the rope is guided by rollers to reduce friction in the system."

Diagnosis of the surface chemical factors playing a part in flotation separation of a valuable sulfide phase requires measurement of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic species that are statistically different between the concentrate and tail streams. Time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) can be used to identify sufficient particles of a specific mineral phase for reliable statistics determining a mean value for each species with 95% confidence intervals (1). Using the region of interest (ROI) facility in the Tof-SIMS software, a mass spectrum from each particle, at 1-2 monolayer sensitivity, is recorded and stored. This analysis is reported for a chalcopyrite / pyrite / sphalerite mineral mixture conditioned at pH 9 for 20 minutes in order to study transfer of copper from chalcopyrite via solution to the other two mineral surfaces since this mechanism can be responsible for their inadvertent flotation in copper recovery. Analysis from mineral selection based on specific ToF-SIMS signals (eg. Pb, Zn, Cu, Fe, Fe/Cu) indicated no statistical difference in the copper intensities on pyrite and sphalerite after this conditioning. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the ToF-SIMS imaging data identifies combinations of factors strongly correlated (positively or negatively) in images or spectra from mass spectra recorded at each of 256x256 pixels in a selected area of particles. PCA is a better method of selecting minerals due to multi-variable recognition. It has clearly separated a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases. The method has been extended to samples from an operating plant again with excellent phase recognition and diagnostic surface chemistry.

"There are a number of challenges involved with the surface analyses of different mineral phases from process streams in a flotation facility. The first of course is to collect samples that are representative of the process and to ensure that they remain in a pristine condition prior to introduction into the instrument. In mineral processing, sample collection from the different streams is done on site and preservation involves simply removing oxygen from the sample by bubbling nitrogen or argon gas through the sample and snap freezing with dry ice.The second challenge in studying the surface chemistry of specific minerals is to find reliable methods of mineral phase recognition. In surface analysis of mineral particles confident mineral selection can be difficult with many multi-metal minerals (e.g. chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite) and with precipitated, adsorbed, reacted and contaminant species in the outermost molecular layers.In this paper we show that principal components analysis (PCA) of ToF-SIMS data provides improvement in phase recognition, particle selection and associated variations in surface species. We will demonstrate, with specific examples, that this technique can be utilized to differentiate surface chemical factors promoting (hydrophobic species) or inhibiting (hydrophilic species) flotation.Species recognition based on the PCA method in a study of Cu transfer between chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite mineral mixture clearly identified a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases. A similar ToF-SIMS/PCA based study applied to concentrate and tails samples collected from the Inco Matte Concentrator demonstrated extensive CuOH and NiOH transfer between the chalcocite and heazlewoodite minerals. The statistical analysis has been able to confirm some mechanisms and deny others proposed to control recovery and selectivity giving more focus on the control factors.The ToF-SIMS PCA statistical analysis has elucidated differences in surface chemistries which illustrate the discriminating depressant action of adherent aluminosilicate (gangue) fine particles and adsorbed ions on the surface of sphalerite grains. In the flotation test concentrates, HIC conditioning resulted in the removal of these gangue fines thereby improving surface collector attachment efficiency, promoting a greater recovery of sphalerite."

A number of novel but increasingly-important methods of size enlargement in liquid systems are reviewed. These techniques use relatively strong bonding and specialized equipment to form dense and substantially permanent agglomerates directly from particles in liquid suspension. In addition to separation of particles from suspensions, these methods have other broad objectives, including the production of granular (often spherical) materials, displacement of suspending liquid from the product and the selective agglomeration of one or more components of a multi-particle mixture. The underlying principles of the methods discussed include agglomeration by immiscible liquid wetting and by polymeric flocculants. Other procedures to produce granular, free-flowing products based on dispersion and solidification in liquids are also noted briefly. Applications in a variety of fine particle systems are considered with emphasis on minerals and fuels beneficiation and on waste treatment.

Introduction As is well known, the fight between the blast furnace and the reverberatory furnace in copper smelting during the second decade of the century ended with a victory for the latter, a result which must largely be attributed to the introduction of flotation methods. To my knowledge, no new blast furnace has been blown-in at any American copper smelter since the War. As the metallurgy of nickel, up to and including matte smelting, is generally considered a close parallel to that of copper, the introduction of reverberatory smelting in the big new smelter of the International Nickel Company at Copper Cliff, built in 1928-30, seemed a logical adherence to a well established trend. In view of these facts, considerable comment was made when Falconbridge Nickel Mines decided to retain the blast furnace in their smelter built about the same time, in 1929. A presentation of the reasons governing this choice should therefore be of interest. The basic principles underlying the Falconbridge practice, and the considerations guiding the successive steps in the operations, will be discussed in the following. To understand the problems involved, the character and mode of occurrence of Sudbury ore must be kept in mind. Large amounts of disseminated ore are generally present. Although the gangue usually runs only about 50 per cent Si02, the ore hoisted as a rule contains more silica than needed in the smelting operation; until recently this excess was removed entirely by hand picking (in later years supplemented by magnetic sorting methods), a difficult and not very satisfactory method, in which 'the border line between ore and waste is entirely arbitrary, and therefore too much depends on the judgment of the picker.

"Solidification/stabilization (S/S) treatment is used to treat hazardous wastes for disposal and in the remediation/site restoration of contaminated land . SIS is also an increasingly popular technology for Brownfield (industrial property) redevelopment, since treated wastes can often be left on-site and to improve the soil for subsequent construction. This paper discusses the applicability of the technology to various wastes, basic cement chemistry relating to SIS, tests used to design treatability studies and to verify treatment, basics on implementation of the technology in the field , and examples of SIS use at brownfield sites, including a former wood preserving site, former manufactured gas plant sites, a former electric generating station, and a shopping mall development.INTRODUCTIONSolidification/Stabilization (S/S) is a widely used treatment for the management/disposal of a broad range of contaminated media and wastes; particularly those contaminated with substances classified as hazardous in the United States. The treatment involves mixing a binding reagent into the contaminated media or waste. The treatment protects human health and the environment by immobilizing contaminants within the treated material. Immobilization within the treated material prevents migration of the contaminants to human, animal and plant receptors. SIS treatment has been used to treat radioactive wastes since the 1950s and hazardous waste since the 1970's (Conner 1990). SIS continues as a cornerstone treatment technology for the management of radioactive waste, hazardous waste, and site remediation and Brownfield redevelopment."

As a result of research work done during the planning of the Kokkola zinc plant it was found that a very efficient cementation of impurities from the suspension obtained after leaching copper and cadmium cakes was achieved by adding zinc dust to the batch without filtration after the leaching. All elements nobler than cadmium are precipitated with the exception of lead, which must be removed in a separate step. Using pure zinc dust, free from noble metals, the cadmium sponge produced will only contain elements that can be re- moved from cadmium by meltrefining. The process is thus : 1. Leaching and purification 2. Removal of lead (with BaCO3) 3. Precipitation of cadmium sponge with pure zinc dust 4. Meltrefining of briquetted sponge with NaOH for removal of Zn (and others) The paper deals with the removal of the most critical elements, i.e. Co, Ni, As, Sb, Cu, Pb, T1 in the liquid phase and Zn and T1 in the melt. A survey is also given of the behaviour of most of the other elements normally found in Cd raw material, such as Ge, Te, Se, Sn, In, Ga. It is shown that in most cases the benefit of an electrolysis in Cd production is very limited. In Kokkola 99.998% Cd is achieved by this method, but in favourable cases it may be possible to come quite close to five nines.

6.1-1. Introduction. Of necessity, the first of the unit operations conducted during the exploitation phase in surface mining is production drilling. It precedes blasting, with which it is associated as the two unit operations employed to break or fragment consolidated material (usually rock) in place. The purpose of production drilling is to provide the cavity for placement of the explosives. So far, no alternative to blasting has been devised for fragmenting very resistant rock in situ, although some forms of excavation (ripping, bucket wheel) are suitable without prior blasting for softer rock, such as weathered shale or mudstone, decomposed sediments, etc. For the vast majority of surface mines, however, drilling and blasting are pre- requisite to excavation and essential to the production cycle. Drilling is also used in surface mining for purposes other than providing blastholes. It finds application during exploration for obtaining samples and during development for drainage, slope stability, foundation testing, etc. Only in the exploitation phase of surface mining, however, are unique or specialized drilling methods and equipment employed; and the discussion in this Section is directed primarily to that application of drilling. Drilling is the most common means of rock penetration, the operation of placing a directed hole in rock. Closely akin to drilling for exploitation purposes is the cutting or freeing of dimension stone in quarrying. This operation, usually termed channeling or sawing, also takes the form of directional penetration of rock; but instead of producing a cylindrical hole, it yields a kerf or cut. The material thus freed from the solid is both a shaped and sized product, an objective of vital importance in the dimension stone industry. In sawing, holes are sometimes drilled to insert tools, but this drilling is a minor part of the sawing operation and employs conventional methods. Cutting, as a unit operation for freeing stone in quarrying, may be considered equivalent in purpose to drilling and blasting in other forms of surface mining.

IN an earlier paper1 measurements of contact angles due to the effect of xanthates on mineral surfaces were reported. The solutions in which these measurements were made differed widely from those of modern flotation circuits. It is intended, however, by introducing, one at a time, the other principal reagents of flotation, to approach gradually the solu-tion composition of flotation liquors. The work now described is an attempt to determine the effect of one of the most important of these reagents-namely, sodium cyanide-on the establishment of air-mineral contact. The work has been carried out for the following companies: Broken Hill South, North Broken Hill, Zinc Corporation, Electro-lytic Zinc of Australasia, Mount Lyell Mining and Railway, and Burma Corporation. Since the effect of cyanide is inseparably connected with the alkalinity, the results cited below deal with the mutual effects of alkalis and cyanide. Alkalis alone exert a significant effect on the air-mineral contact but comparatively large amounts are required. Since the addition of a small amount of cyanide greatly decreases the degree of alkalinity necessary for the suppression of contact at surfaces of any of the minerals experimented with (except galena) and since alkalis are rarely used alone in practice, little attention has been paid to cyanide-free solutions. It was shown in the previous paper that, excluding the dixanthogen effect, whenever contact was practicable at all in an ethyl xanthate solution the angle of contact was 60°. There is, therefore, less necessity to measure equilibrium contact angles; in fact, the experiments herein described have generally been conducted with a view to determining whether contact is possible and not to measuring the actual value of the contact angle. The separations which have generally to be effected in dealing with complex sulfide ores are: (1) galena from sphalerite, pyrite, etc.; (2) sphalerite from pyrite and/or gangue minerals; (3) copper minerals from pyrite and gangue minerals; (4) pyrite from gangue minerals; (5) chal-

IN defending the chemical theory of flotation, Taggart, del Giudice and Ziehl have criticized1 the views of those who prefer to attribute the effects of certain flotation agents to adsorption. Perhaps with some justifica-tion, they describe the latter term as the "haven of refuge of writers lost in a morass of shaky experiment and muddy thinking." We prefer to regard it, however, as a haven of refuge for writers who seek a conven-tional term to describe the formation of films of flotation reagents on solid surfaces, because in many cases it is not yet possible to specify the forces that hold them there. Originally, as Taggart and his associates state, adsorption connoted a. concentration difference and nothing more. In recent years, workers in the field of surface chemistry have tacitly added other meanings, and they now speak of orientated adsorption of unimolecular films on a solid sub-strate, of chemi-adsorption, and of exchange adsorption. Thus the term adsorption may connote-simply the Gibbs layer of excess concentration at the surface of a solution, or a unimolecular film at the surface of a solid. Perhaps this has led to the misunderstanding of Taggart, del Giudice and Ziehl concerning the relationship between surface tension and adsorption at solid surfaces. The change in "surface tension" accompanying adsorp-tion at a liquid surface can be used as a measure of the adsorption, and the Gibbs equation as quoted by these authors correlates these two con-ceptions. But, to correlate two conceptions does not necessarily imply an attempt to explain either, although sometimes. such an "explanation" is carelessly inferred. Use of "surface energy per unit area" instead of the numerically equal but more difficult and less definite conception of "surface tension per unit length" would lessen many of the present diffi-culties. (Compare with Adam.2) At interfaces involving a solid phase, neither "surface tension" nor "interfacial tension" can have any meaning, but the conception "interfacial energy per unit area" can be understood by anyone who is familiar with the concept of free energy. MERCAPTOBENZTHIAZOLE and its sodium salt are marketed under the trade names Flotagen and Flotagen S respectively, for use as collectors for cerussite and other minerals. The structural formulas for sodium mercaptobenzthiazole and for sodium ethyl xanthate are: Chemically there is a resemblance between the two compounds, though the free acid (mercaptobenzthiazole itself) is much more stable than xanthic acid. Both are readily oxidized, e.g., by iodine to disulphides, and can be estimated by iodometric titration. Qualitatively they are similar as collectors in flotation, although there are quantitative differences between them that may be important in practice. It is deduced that the influence of the nitrogen atom is subordinated to that of the sulphur atoms, and that the dominant group of these compounds is the mercapto group -SH or -SNa. The general method of investigation has been based on contact tests. Two temperatures, 10° and 35° C., have been chosen, and with a standard concentration of 20 mg. per liter of mercaptobenzthiazole (i.e., of the free acid) the influence of alkali, cyanide and copper sulphate on contact at sulphide mineral surfaces has been studied. This standard concentration corresponds to about 19 mg. per liter potassium ethyl xanthate; it brings out the differences between the minerals better than a higher concentra-

AEROFLOAT 25 is a complex mixture of free cresylic acid with aryl substituted dithiophosphoric acids, sulphides, disulphides, etc. Its complete composition has not been published by the makers or patentees. It is prepared1 by the reaction between phosphorus pentasulphide and carefully selected cresylic acid. We have been informed that this acid contains no phenol and very little cresol, and that it is rich in the higher alkyl phenols, particularly the xylenols. The reaction between a phenol ROH and phosphorus pentasulphide may produce compounds of the following type:2 (i) RO S P Diaryldithiophosphoric acids RO SH (ii) R-SH Thiophenolic compounds (iii) R-S-R Diaryl sulphides (iv) R-S-S-R Diaryl disulphides (v) Substituted thianthren compounds Except for the simplest type, the thiophenols (ii), the boiling points of these compounds lie above 300° C. The amounts of the thianthren compounds formed from the five xylenols (if all these are present) will vary according to the position of the substituents. In an attempt to ascertain something of the nature of the reagent, fractional distillation under atmospheric pressure was undertaken. THIS paper is a study of the differential flotation of the sulphide minerals in the presence of salts of silver, lead and zinc. In practice, accidental activation due to these salts is more important than their use as reagents to replace copper sulphate. The general method of investigation has been based upon contact tests, the temperature of 35°C. being chosen in conformity with earlier work. Potassium ethyl xanthate and potassium amyl xanthate were selected as collectors and pure sulphide minerals were used. The experimental procedure has been outlined in earlier papers and all solutions were kept carbonate-free.'' Contact, or spreading of an air bubble, at a mineral surface indicates the presence of an adsorbed collector film. PURITY OF REAGENTS The xanthates were purified in the usual manner.1 Neither the cyanide nor the sodium hydroxide solutions contained sufficient carbonate to give a precipitate with barium chloride solution. The silver sulphate was prepared from pure silver nitrate by evaporation with concentrated sulphuric acid until there was no evidence of brown fumes. This solution was diluted and the difficultly soluble sulphate washed with water so that unchanged nitrate was dissolved. The resultant crystal-line powder was pure white. The lead and zinc salts were prepared by dissolving especially pure lead and zinc in C.P. nitric and sulphuric acid solution and the crystals drained. The standard solutions were checked by titration. It was felt desirable to use the sulphate radical wherever possible, but since lead sulphate was insufficiently soluble for the purpose of the experiments, it was necessary to use some other lead salt. A.R. copper sulphate was used without further purification. RESULTS The results are presented in the accompanying figures; the areas of noncontact (nonflotation) are shaded in Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11; in the remainder they lie to the right of the curve. Zinc Sulphate The curves in Fig. I are to be compared with those for Fig. 2, for which zinc sulphate is absent. This comparison shows that the influence of the zinc ion is usually small. Its influence is more marked, however, for chalcopyrite in the absence of cyanide. The influence of zinc sulphate is also marked for copper-activated sphalerite, for which tests were made only in the absence of cyanide. The results are of importance in the separation of pyrite from copper-activated sphalerite when zinc sulphate is added in the lead flotation section (p. 204 of ref. I). Sphalerite does not adsorb the collector (i.e., become floatable) under the conditions chosen.

It was felt desirable to use the sulphate radical wherever possible, but since lead sulphate was insufficiently soluble for the purpose of the experiments, it was necessary to use some other lead salt. A.R. copper sulphate was used without further purification. RESULTS The results are presented in the accompanying figures; the areas of noncontact (nonflotation) are shaded in Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11; in the remainder they lie to the right of the curve. Zinc Sulphate The curves in Fig. I are to be compared with those for Fig. 2, for which zinc sulphate is absent. This comparison shows that the influence of the zinc ion is usually small. Its influence is more marked, however, for chalcopyrite in the absence of cyanide. The influence of zinc sulphate is also marked for copper-activated sphalerite, for which tests were made only in the absence of cyanide. The results are of importance in the separation of pyrite from copper-activated sphalerite when, zinc sulphate is added in the lead flotation section (p. 204 of ref. I). Sphalerite does not adsorb the collector (i.e., become floatable) under the conditions chosen.

There used to be a time when bins were designed for total volume and placed in any available place of the plant. Poke holes were provided and feed was maintained by manual prodding, lancing, hammering, and by various mechanical flow-profiting devices. Little thought was given to what occurred inside the bins and why materials did not flow. Indeed, such mental effort was hard to justify while low-cost manual labor was plentiful, quality standards low, and rates of feed moderate. The past fifteen years have seen a drastic change in these conditions. We all know that labor for hard manual work is becoming unavailable at any wage, level. Standards of product uniformity are continuously rising. This uniformity is just as important in a fine ore feed to ball mills as it is in a cattle feed or in a flour mix. Rates of feed now frequently exceed 2,000 tons per hour per feeder. At that rate there is no time for, lancing or prodding. An efficient storage, plant contains a known available volume of bulk solid, and feeds it at the required time, at the prescribed rate, and without degradation of the product. A storage bin may also perform other functions such as blending of different grades, degasification of aerated, powders, isolation of different gaseous media. A contact bed of particles flowing by gravity in counter-current with a gas or liquid may be used as a continuous reactor. Gas or liquid pressures can be simply contained by, a sufficient head of flowing solid.
