"Threshold limit values (TLVs) for NO and NO2 have been reduced drastically in 2016. Emissions of diesel engines have been reduced in the last decades. In many cases this is not enough to stay under required TLVs. Remaining gas in the blasted rock is set free during loading and transport. At the end, only a combination of measures with a further reduction of diesel motor emission, replacement of diesel driven vehicles by electric equipment, new explosives with reduced NO and NO2 production, changes in the organization and effective ventilation measures can ensure that the TLVs are not exceeded. KEYWORDS Blasting fumes, Gas measurement, Gases, Threshold Limit Value (TLV) SHORT HISTORY OF EXTRACTION OF RAW MATERIALS The extraction of raw materials—besides haulage and transport—is one of the main processes in mining and tunneling. The principal objective is the creation of a material which can be transported from the place of extraction (face) to another place for further processing or direct use. Furthermore, recently a desired grain size distribution has become more important. A revolutionary development took place in the course of centuries. With the use of primitive tools like shovels, chisel and iron in the 12th/13th century in Freiberg, ore mines performances of 12 16 cm per man and week could be reached in cross section of 1 m2. Recalculated with an assumed average density, this is a performance of 0.006 t/h. With the introduction of black powder into the subsurface in 1627 by Caspar Weindl in the city of Schemnitz (nowadays Banska Stiavniza), performances increased. A part of the hard extraction work was now done by the explosives. But first in 1767, it was recognized in a mine in Freiberg that more than 1 hole could be drilled (hand-drilling) and blasted. This discovery was so important that a plate with an inscription describes this event. The performance was increased more than 10 times compared to the extraction with chisel and iron. Since this time, drilling and blasting has been the most important innovation force for the increase of the performance. Problems with noxious blasting fumes led to the construction of the first tunneling machine by Henry Joseph Mouse in 1846 (beside shield machines from 1825) (Stack, 1982)). The triumph of mining machines started only interrupted by the two world wars. The development of hard rock boring machines (including roadheaders) was enforced after 1945. An almost complete extraction by hard rock boring machines was predicted for the turn of the millennium. And, indeed, one could find powerful machines in Canadian potash mines which were able to mine 1000 t of potash in 1 hour. That was an increase in the performance by several powers of ten. But already in the 1980s, it was recognized that the ambiguous goal could not be reached. Problems with wear of the tools, radius of curves, minimal length of openings, size and costs of the machines led to a more or less parity between drilling and blasting on one side and machines on the other side, of course depending on the field of use. For this reason, drilling and blasting is still the dominant extraction technology for raw materials. In the development of drilling and blasting technologies, the focus was mainly on the improvement of the safety but also on the increase of the blasting power and performance. Examples are tests for the increase of the power of ANFO explosives which were carried out in the 1970s and 1980s, in the former teaching mine “Reiche Zeche”. In the 1980s vehicles for loading and mixing of ANFO explosives have been developed, the blasting cab sensitivity of ANFO has been increased, emulsion explosives have been developed and up to now further developments like PMMA LOX EX explosives are on the way. At the turn of the millennium, 6 million t/a explosives have been used worldwide. Annual rates of increase of 2% have been predicted (Weyer, 1999). Artificial ground freezing is the unrivalled method for groundwater control during mine shaft sinking. Moreover, ground freezing may also provide temporary ground support. The fast development of fibre-optic temperature monitoring devices, three-dimensional freeze pipe survey methods and numerical modelling software provide grounds for developing new and reliable tools for ground control during freeze shaft sinking. This paper presents examples of predictive numerical models that are based on back-analysis and calibration of temperature data that covers the complete construction cycle from pre-freezing through to artificial thawing. The back-analyses showed that standard numerical models are not capable of predicting the prevailing thermo-mechanical conditions satisfactorily. This paper describes the development and implementation of new tools for improved consideration of concrete hydration and latent heat, along with the introduction of other algorithms that improve and simplify the efforts of managing complex numerical models. A function is presented that allows for an automated correction of the model’s mesh based on results of three-dimensional freeze pipe surveys. This paper demonstrates that the latter consideration is important, because the often employed assumption of idealised freeze circle geometry in numerical models impacts on the accuracy of such model’s predictions. Subsequently, the verification of these extended numerical models is demonstrated. Due to its flexibility, the FLAC3DTM code was employed for the numerical modelling. This software provides the possibility of implementing additional functions written in internal FISH or Python language into the models. It is concluded that state-of-the-art techniques for freeze hole drilling and surveying, on-site monitoring and advanced numerical analysis provide a significant potential for both the design and the operation of largescale ground freezing measures. The application of the extended numerical models for predictive simulations during construction allows for temporary shaft lining optimisation, for assisting in operational decision making and for compensating temporary loss of monitoring data. The identification and characterization of lithographic iron and sulfur oxidizing bacteria in the 1940' s. opened up new possibilities and challenges for the mining and metallurgical industries. These were exploited during the 1950's and' 1960's, when it was demonstrated' that mining wastes and complex unused mineral resources could be economically treated by bacterially assisted heap and dump leaching processes?. During the 1970's this technology grew into a more structured discipline called "biohydrometallurgy". In the l980's efforts were devoted to the identification of a variety of organisms involved in naturally occurring leaching processes. Further efforts dealt with the elucidation, of leaching mechanisms; the leach ability of nickel, coban, zinc, and precious metals; the desulfurization of coal; and diverse biosorpion phenomena. The application of genetic engineering techniques for the improvement of microbial performance was also initiated?. Current trends in biohydrometallurgy include improvement of many of the techniques noted above, as well as application of leaching. technolog.ies to. environmental remediation scenarios. These activities afford considerable opportunities for research in the 1990's. For example, bioremectiation of abandoned mining and processing sites requires development of new and economically viable technologies capable of removing low concentrations of toxic metals from high volumes of solid and/or liquid wastes.

As openpit copper operations transition from surface mines to underground, the speed of underground infrastructure construction prior to production is critical for maximizing the value of the project. Typically, the preferred underground bulk mining method is block caving. In preparation for future underground projects, Rio Tinto made the strategic decision to invest in a step-change program that would develop system solutions to reduce the construction time of block caves. The program focused on improving safety and doubling or more the construction speed of both vertical shafts and horizontal infrastructure compared to existing drill-and-blast rates. After an extensive selection process, Rio Tinto selected the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine as one of the concepts to proceed with for construction of horizontal infrastructure for access and footprint. In addition to un-derground drilling and hauling equipment, Atlas Copco?s Robbins mobile miner concept (a previous attempt at horizontal mechanical excavation) completed trials at Mount Isa, Pasminco and Taisei. Rio Tinto selected the new Atlas Copco mobile miner machine concept for a number of reasons including the use of proven technology from the three previous mobile miner machines and other commercial products, as well as the ability to install complete ground support typical with high rock stress conditions at approximately 1,500 to 2,000 m (4,900 to 6,500 ft) depth. Atlas Copco, with support from Rowa, the Swiss company that specializes in back up systems for tunnel boring machines (TBM), is advancing the detail design of the access version of a tunneling system on behalf of Rio Tinto. Because of the different requirements between an excavation system for access tunnels and that for tunnels on the footprint, two different versions of the mobile miner machine technology were envisioned. The access and the footprint versions of the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine share a majority of key technologies and systems. Therefore, it was possible to conduct a performance conformation test using a full-scale version of the access machine that would also mitigate the technical risks for the footprint version. "The petrographic components of any particular rank of coal often show some distinct physical and chemical characteristics. Therefore, their pro-portionate distribution in a coal greatly influences the technological behaviour of the coal.In any size or gravity separation of a coal, the petrographic constituents become segregated to different degrees in some preferred size or specific gravity range. Therefore, a knowledge of the petrographic nature of the washed and/or screened fractions is often considered essential in selecting the most efficient method for coal preparation and in exploring the proper evenues for its utilization.A graphical method is described in this paper to indicate the mineral-matter content and the petrographic components of the washed fractions of a coal at different ash levels of separation in the form of a new washability diagram. This diagram can be conveniently used to assess or predict the petrographic composition of clean coal or sinks corresponding to any desired ash level in the cleans. With the help of this diagram, it is also possible to locate the yield level of cleans at which maximum enrichment of vitrinites and exinites occurs with the least amount of mineral-matter content."

Drill and blast project in Norway’s capital. The contract consists of 7 rock caverns (350–950 m2), 9.2 km tunnels, and four shafts. With 110 blue-collar and 31 white-collar, the project produces an average of 16–21,000 m3 hard rock per week, with a total of 19 tunnel faces. Weekly, nine grouting rounds for water control, 800 m3 shotcrete, and 1,200 bolts are required, and 60 trucks leave the site pr. day. Challenges include blasting in densely populated areas, planning and coordination to maintain high production, obtaining a CEEQUAL certification of very good, and transporting rock on Oslo’s main highway.

"Carbon-in-leach (CIL) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) processes utilize activated carbon to adsorb solubilized gold for recovery. Due to carbon attrition and non-ideal carbon management, however, some of the gold is lost in carbon fines and to the solution. The carbon attrition mechanism inside CIL/CIP reactors is mainly abrasion-related. This is critical to gold loss since gold loading takes place predominantly in the outer shell of the carbon particles. Thus fine carbon dust has a relatively high gold content and such a small particle size that it cannot be captured with safety screens. The attrition rate depends on ore and carbon characteristics, but it is always proportional to the mixing power intensity. This rate can be minimized by continuous suspension level measurement and control of agitation speed. In addition, a novel tank bottom structure can significantly reduce the required mixing power input compared to a flat bottom tank. A major challenge in carbon management is infrequent and inaccurate measurement of carbon concentration in the reactors. In order to reduce soluble gold losses by means of improved carbon management, Outotec has been developing a continuous in-situ measurement for carbon concentration that is tolerant to changes in slurry density.INTRODUCTION Cyanide leaching has been utilized since the late 19th century as a standard technology for hydrometallurgical gold production. Since then, gold and silver recovery rates have increased due to technological development, but very similar recovery methods are still being used. The original recovery method was to use zinc precipitation – similar to the Merrill-Crowe process, which is still common for feed materials with low throughput and high silver content. However, in most cases, activated carbon recovery is preferred due to its improved efficiency. The carbon-in-pulp process (CIP) and its modification, carbon-in-leach (CIL), have a lower residual soluble gold level and are not similarly affected by soluble base metals. The main alternative for the use of carbon is ion exchange resins. The principle of resin processes is similar to the CIL/CIP processes, with a different type of adsorbent material. Carbon processes are usually preferred over resin processes due to the significantly higher cost of resin material and the possibility to use simpler, well-established technology with carbon processes."

We cannot expect, within the limits of this paper, to treat this subject exhaustively, but will endeavor, in the following, to present it in as concise a manner as is consistent with a clear exposition of its importance. Ores of titanium, titaniferous iron-ores (that is, iron-ores containing a notable amount of titanic acid, TiO2,, say not less than 5 per cent., generally 10 to 20 per cent., and frequently more, up to 40 per cent. or thereabout), occur all over the world in immense quantity, " in mountain masses," constituting in some localities, as in Sweden, Norway, Canada, the Adirondacks (N. Y.), in North Carolina and other States of the Union, the geological formation itself, the igneous rocks having, in many places, been so permeated with the metallic oxides as to justify their being called iron-ores. As a rule they are Bessemer ores, quite free from phosphorus and sulphur, though not invariably so. When the percentage of titanic acid is very high, that of the iron is low, but the proportions do not necessarily vary in the same ratio; that is, a rich ore may contain more titanic acid than one lower in iron. The percentage of iron varies, being as low as 35 to 36 per cent. in real ilmenite. It is more generally not less than 50 to 55 per cent., reaching often an average of 58 to 60 per cent., and as high as 63 to 65 per cent. It is obvious that if these ores were to be considered in the same light as other iron-ores, equally rich in iron, they would form an excellent stock for blast-furnaces for years to come, as their supply might be called inexhaustible, and they could

It is well known that many so-called free-milling silver arcs are so classed more from their value necessitating a cheap process than from a real adaptability to raw amalgamation. Such low--grade ores, carrying more or less sulphurets, are more profitably treated by a cheap rapid process than by the more effective but costly process of roasting arid amalgamation. The tailings are sometimes crudely concentrated, or, after lying and becoming partially oxidized, are again worked in pans. Of late years, by the use of improved methods of concentration, many old low-grade tailings-piles have been reworked to a good profit; and in some improved mills arrangements are made to concentrate before or after amalgamation, thus making a single treatment in mill suffice. It is self-evident that on a low-grade ore a small increase in percentage saved is of no commercial advantage if accompanied by a material increase in cost, and therefore a cheap and continuous system of work is the real necessity, if a fair saving be effected. As an illustration of the possibilities of combined concentration and amalgamation on some ores, the following results of a working test at the New York Ore-Milling and Testing Works will be of some interest. CONSIDERING the extent of the gold-fields of Nova Scotia, which occupy an area of 6000 to 7000 square miles, a few words as to the cost of extracting and reducing the ores may prove of interest. The veins are for the most part narrow, 4 to 12 inches being the usual width, while a 2-foot vein is considered a large one; but they offer many advantages, inasmuch as the ore is easily treated, wages are low, and machinery and supplies can be transported by water to within from 1 to 15 miles of the different mining districts. The Salmon River vein is a notable exception to the above rule as to width. It ranges from 4 to 20 feet in width. The Hall-Anderson of Fifteen-Mile Stream (where there are several veins) is another, which has proved to be from 3 to 4 feet in width. The ownership of all mining claims is retained by the Crown, but persons wishing to work them can lease as many unoccupied areas as they please for twenty-one years, with option of renewal, on the payment of two dollars for each area, and a royalty of 2 per cent. on all gold extracted. Each area consists of 150 Get along the lode and 250 feet across, upon which a certain amount of work must be done, which by recent law is reduced from one hundred to forty days' work for each area every year. Any person erecting in a district the first mill, having at least 8 stamps, and being at least 10 miles from any other mill, is entitled to a lease of 10 areas, free from advance-payment and from royalty, for twenty-one years. A record must be kept, and filed every quarter at the office of the Commissioner of Mines, of the total number of days' work done on the areas, and a monthly statement of the number of tons crushed, and the actual yield of gold. Gold-mining in Nova Scotia may be said to have commenced with the finding of a nugget of gold in a brook at Tangier in 1858. A joint meeting of the New York Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers was held in the large auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building, 29 West 39th Street, on Friday evening, Apr. 4, 1913, and an exhibition of the Edison Talking Moving Pictures was presented before the Societies, together with exhibitions of the work which is being done by the Edison Co. in making moving pictures to illustrate lectures on natural science and the useful arts for school and college work. Introductory remarks were made by Mr. J. W. Lieb, Jr., and followed by an exhibition of moving pictures illustrating the formation of crystals, the operation of different types of pumps, magnetic forces, electro-magnetic separation of iron ore, the evolution of the fly, and many other most interesting studies. One of the films, entitled The Formation of Crystals, showed a moving picture of a boy, whose laboratory was the kitchen, dissolving salt in a test tube filled with hot water. The boy then poured the solution of hot salt into a watch glass and placed it under the microscope to watch the crystals form. This film was immediately followed by another showing what the boy saw through the microscope. The solution at first was free from crystals. Gradually the crystals commenced to form and increased very rapidly after once starting, shooting across the screen with lightning speed. The film illustrating the separation of iron ores by the Edison electro-magnet showed an ore bin with an electro-magnet set at one side and below the bin. As the ore was dropped from the bin the magnetite was drawn into the. electric field and deposited in a separate rile from the sand.

In drilling for water and oil to reasonable depths through the generally soft yielding clay and sand formation of the Coastal Plain of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, the rotating method of drilling was adopted, principally on account of the easy and quick penetration, and the low cost of the drilling plant. In favorable ground, free of heavy gravel and rock strata, as much as 1,600 ft. has been drilled in less than 36 hr., although such performances were of course rare. Hydraulic rotary drilling, or, as it is now called, rotary drilling, was used in the above States as early as 1880. The plant consisted of an ordinary derrick, a 25-h.p. boiler, a small hoist, a steam pump, and a water swivel with hose attachment, and an ordinary flat diamond-pointed bit. The successful drilling in of a phenomenal oil well by this process on Spindletop, near Beaumont, Texas, on Jan. 10, 1901, and the ascertained impracticability of drilling subsequent wells in the same locality by other methods (owing principally to heavy quicksand under pressure from below), brought rotary drilling into great prominence, practically to the exclusion of any other process throughout the Coastal Plain, and later on elsewhere. The method, as its name implies, involves the rotation of a pipe by means of machinery placed on the derrick floor. A drill bit attached to the lower end cuts a clearance for the drill pipe, with much the same motion and effect as an auger. Water forced through the drill pipe by means of a pump, and escaping through the bit, removes the cuttings and returns to the surface outside the drill pipe. In this manner the hole is kept open, permitting the drill stem to rotate freely. The pressure of the column of muddy water holds up the walls of the hole until it has been cased. Practically all the wells of the Gulf coast region, numbering nearly 10,000, have been drilled with this system. During the last five years its use has been extended to many other States and countries.

The following paper embodies a report which I made on the filter-press treatment of slimes at the Liberty Bell mine, Telluride, Colo. At the time this report was submitted, the management deemed it wiser to defer the installation of so costly a plant as the one required, in the hope that some of the many investigators in the field might soon evolve a cheaper and more perfect method of slimes-treatment, and one better suited to the conditions at Telluride. The Liberty Bell ore consists essentially of quartz and clay, with iron pyrites disseminated through the quartz in very fine particles. There is considerable iron and manganese stain in some of the ore, the latter especially in the clays, which are sometimes quite black. Occasionally particles of galena, zincblende, gray copper and a few other minerals are seen, but they are comparatively rare, and not in sufficient quantity to affect considerations of treatment. Free gold is occasionally seen in the quartz, and one or two instances of mire silver have been observed. The milling-plant consists of an 80-stamp amalgamating mill which crushes through 20-mesh screens; 20 Wilfley concentrating tables, taking out, in iron sulphides, about 2 per cent. of the total ore crushed; and a cyanide plant consisting of two tiers of 33 ft. vats, five in each tier, fed by revolving pipe-die tributers. The slimes overflow from the upper settling tanks through gates with adjustable outlets, and thence to a large canvas-plant, which efects only a small saving. This slimes product, of which about 100 tons escape per day (or 38 per cent. of the total ore crushed), contains about 3 per cent. of dry solids. Of this approximately 93 per cent. will pass a 200-mesh screen. The slimes range in value between $3.90 and $4.87 per ton, the values being about equally distributed between gold and silver. Although a number of articles appeared during the war advocating the use of cadmium in lead-tin solders, very little information of value can be found in the literature regarding the properties of solders containing cadmium. In most of the published articles the cadmium seems to have been considered merely as a partial substitute for tin in a tin-lead alloy rather than as an essential constituent of a ternary alloy. The primary object of the substitution of cadmium for tin was to lessen the amount of tin required, at a time when the latter was scarce and high-priced, and thus to produce a cheaper solder. While this object was accomplished, the new properties resulting from a change from a binary lead-tin alloy to a ternary lead-tin-cadmium alloy were not given proper consideration in many cases. For the past few years, the American Smelting & Refining Co. has been marketing a very considerable amount of cadmium in the form of lead-tin-cadmium alloys for use as solders for certain special purposes, and the successful use of these solders suggested that if more extensive knowledge were available concerning the properties of lead-tin-cadmium alloys of various compositions their field of usefulness might be materially extended. The investigation described in the present paper was undertaken to obtain this information and, by means of tests under conditions approaching those of practical use, to determine the suitability of cadmium solders for various purposes. Characteristics and Requirements of Solders in General General Physical Properties.—When cast into bars, solder should present a smooth and bright appearance free from oxide inclusions and bubbles. Ductility should be as great as possible without sacrificing tensile strength, and vice versa. Hardness and specific gravity are not of any great importance. Melting Characteristics.—The melting or solidification range is important. This statement applies both to the extent of the range and to the actual temperature at which complete solidification occurs. A rather narrow solidification range is desirable in soft solders in order that solidification may take place quickly. A 2000-ton ammonia leaching plant has been operated by the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co., at Lake Linden, Mich., continuousl~ since February, 1917, except from April, 1921, to April, 1922, during the period of depression following the European war. A description of this plant has been published elsewhere.1 The present article describes the operation of the plant since 1917, together with the changes in the process that have been found to be advisable. In spite of the fact that this plant and that of the Kennecott Copper Co. are the only ones operating on a large scale, much experimental work is being done on ammonia leaching, as applied to oxidized ores, and it is to aid these and other investigators that this detailed account is given. For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the original article, the following short abstract is given, as an introduction to a more detailed account of the process and the reasons for present practice. Rêsumê of Previous Article Leaching on a commercial scale began in July, 1916, and by Februsry, 1917, the plant of 2000 tons capacity was in commission. The ore treated is a conglomerate containing native copper and no sulfides or oxidized copper minerals. Before leaching, the ore is crushed by steam stamps and Hardinge pebble mills to pass a 28-mesh screen. Free copper is removed, by gravity concentration, on Woodbury jigs and Wilfley tables, and colloidal slime for oil flotation is removed by quadruplex Dorr classifiers. The leaching sand remaining contains about 2 per cent. + 28-mesh material and 15 per cent. — 200-mesh and carries from 8 to 14 lb. of copper per ton, depending on the grade of ore worked. The burden a man can endure depends on its magnitude and the number of times it is applied, as well as on many other factors. The resisting power of steel likewise is dependent on many factors. The maximum load it can support indefinitely is much less than its possible momentary burden. A light load straining the metal far within its elastic limit, if repeated indefinitely, ruptures the metal. The magnitude of the stresses that may be alternately applied and removed without rupturing the material depends on the number of repetitions of the cycle; the intervening periods of rest; the thermal, electric, and magnetic conditions, as well as the presence of secondary streessses. While we are unable to formulate the law between the magnitude of repeated stresses necessary to produce rupture and the length of time during which these alternating stresses may be applied before rupture, my experience is that the time increases as the magnitude of the force decreases, according to a law which! to a first approximation, is exponential. In other words, F = Ce-t where F= magnitude of alternating stresses; t= time for which stresses are continued; C = constant, which depends on the conditions under which the operations are carried out. It is quite probable that the same type of law holds for the magnitude of a continuous force and its duration. When a rod of steel is subjected to the blows of a drilling hammer several things happen. First, one end is struck by the hammer and the other end is driven into the rock, thus causing a bodily displacement of the entire material of the steel drill. The greatest stresses involved in this bodily displacement are located at the two ends of the steel and manifest themselves by the distortion of these parts. Second, after the blow has been delivered, the steel drill, due partly to its own resiliency and partly to the resiliency of the rock, experiences a vibratory motion as a whole, this motion is quite similar to the bouncing of a rubber ball thrown violently upon a smooth pavement. THe necessity of adopting improved methods of bituminous-coal cleaning at many collieries is recognized by all familiar with the requirements of the various bituminous markets, the approaching exhaustion of the relatively small areas of inherently high-grade coal, and the difficulties encountered in maintaining a uniform grade of shipped coal. Many coals lose much of their market value by degradation in size, and, in any event, if the cleaning .process is to contemplate wetting the coal the minimum amount of fines should be produced to prevent sludge losses and the difficulties resulting from the moisture content of the wet fines. Hence, it is desirable to bypass the finer coal dry, if this can be done without too great increase in impurities in the final product. This procedure has given excellent results at washeries at Steelton and in the Birmingham district. If the raw fines are too impure to permit admixture with the washed coal, it may be desirable to use dry methods, such as the pneumatic table, rather than to wet an excessive amount of such fine material. The bituminous-coal cleaning plant should therefore: (1) Treat the raw coal in as large lump as possible and without sizing; (2) eliminate degradation of pure coal in the washing process; (3) avoid wetting the fines, if possible; (4) produce washed coal practically free from mechanically included impurities; (5) crush the refuse and retreat, if much intergrown coal and refuse are present, rather than precrush the entire feed. Ordinary gravimetric methods of concentration, whether hydraulic or pneumatic, will not meet all of these requirements, as the large lump includes those sizes now sent to the picking tables, if it is desired to treat material of such size. I do not know of any prior commercial method, based on the falling velocity, coefficient of friction or resistance to fracture, that permits the production of clean coal varying in size from, say, 10-in. lump to 1/16-in. mesh. The effect on the specific gravity of any given coal as a result of variations in ash and pyritic sulfur content is well known; in fact, it has been made use of in commercially ascertaining ash content by deter-
