Diminishing returns in management's fight to lower manufacturing expenses have added luster to savings that can be achieved in delivered costs through creative management of the distribution function. This is especially true for companies engaged in the production of bulk commodities, for which transport costs may represent 25 to 50% or more of total delivered price, A. E. Cascino, vice president of International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, recently gave an example of why top management in his firm is concerned with distribution: "The price of a ton of phosphate rock, f.o.b. mine, is about $7. The cost of warehousing, freight, and handling frequently totals an additional $11 . . . . If one of our competitors . . . discovers a way in which he can cut his distribution costs by $3, we're dead! Even if we wanted to offset our competitor's more efficient means of shipping with reduced f.o.b. price for our product-we don't have that much profit margin . . . ." In a special report on the revolution now occurring in transportation of goods, Business Week stated in its September 24 issue: "Moving and storing goods on their way from mine and mill through various sub-assemblies to their final markets costs anywhere from $50 billion to $75 billion a year- $100 billion if paperwork costs are included.

The market has become highly competitive for engineering and equipment vendors, who are challenged to reduce costs while improving efficiency and productivity of mine operations through plant improvements and expansions. Although conveyor transfer systems account for a small percentage of the infrastructure cost of a mine, they form an integral part of the process supply chain. Malfunctions or suboptimal performance can result in substantial financial cost from delayed start-up, unscheduled downtime, reduced throughput and increased maintenance costs.Discrete element modelling (DEM) is a powerful simulation method used to virtually prototype and test the performance of transfer equipment throughout a design cycle. When developed and applied correctly, DEM can provide insight into performance that exceeds the traditional analytical methods, especially when dealing with complex ore properties, behaviour and/or situations.Using case studies sourced from the authors’ recent research and industrial project work, this paper will address the industry goal to increase efficiency and productivity as well as the methods available to the engineers responsible for delivering designs that meet the aims of this strategic approach.The main focus of the paper will be the new calibration technology, which has been developed by the authors to generate DEM material models that are linked to real-world properties and flow behaviours via unique dynamic testing and innovative parameter calibration methods. These calibrated DEM material models can be deployed by engineers into their existing workflows, whether it be for feasibility studies, concept or final design, plant troubleshooting or optimisation.This new technology allows engineers to gain greater insight than that provided by traditional approaches to the design of transfer chutes and other process equipment and also allows informed design decisions to be made that meet industry efficiency and productivity requirements.CITATION:Grima, A P, Curry, D and Wypych, P W, 2015. The DOPA process (Direct Oxidation of a Precursor Alloy) was used to prepare ceramic powders based on doped SnO2 and ZnO. The DOPA process consists essentially in the direct oxidation of a homogeneous precursor alloy. A unique advantage of this process is its rather benign environmental impact since no dangerous reactants are used and no harmful by-products are generated. Only oxygen and the alloy metals participate on the chemical reaction to produce the multi-component oxide. Homogeneous alloys of niobium, cobalt and chromium doped tin have been prepared. The molten metal alloy is atomised in air using a double fluid nozzle to produce metallic powders. A subsequent thermal treatment is carried out to fully oxidise the sprayed metal alloy powders. These raw powders are used to prepare a ceramic powder through a mill homogenisation and atomisation process. The ceramic powder is then uniaxially compacted in disc shape and sintered in an oxidising atmosphere. The resulting sintered bodies are metallised on their flat faces and the cylindrical surface is passivated using lead free glass enamel. These ceramics present excellent semiconducting properties with non-linear (non-ohmic) characteristics. The DOPA process is found to be an attractive procedure to obtain ceramic powders for the preparation of SnO2 varistors.

"Saponite is a valuable marketable product widely used foundry, metallurgy and construction, in the chemical, food and consumer goods industries, in medicine, and in agriculture.The feasibility of producing of high-quality construction materials with enhanced physical-chemical and decorative characteristics from saponite-containing products has been given a scientific basis and experimentally validated. The compressive strength of the samples in the sintering temperature range of 800-1000 ?? varied between 35 and 80.9 MPa; the bending strength 8 and 26.7 MPa, which is superior to the high-grade ceramic bricks of the M-300 brand. It has been established that the saponite-containing product obtained using the electrochemical separation of process water has a high sorption capacitance relatively the heavy-metal ions such as nickel and copper (40.7 and 99.8 mg/g, respectively). As a result of sintering at 750 ?? the sorption capacity of the sorbent for the nickel and copper ions increased to 194.2 and 212.8. Using the XRD and SEM with energy-dispersive spectroscopy studies, we diagnosed the metal-containing phases and validated the metal sorption mechanism.This study opens up the possibility of practical realization of the saponite-containing product as high-quality building materials and heavy-metal sorbents while addressing the issue of process water treatment. INTRODUCTION The Lomonosov deposit of the Archangelsk diamondiferous province accommodates 10 kimberlite pipes. The anticipated volume of diamond-bearing ore and dump rock to be removed before reaching the open-pit mining limit is 300 mln t (Karpenko, 2009; Bezborodov, etal. 2003). Rock in the deposit is almost completely displaced by clay minerals, predominantly saponite, amounting to 90% in the vent facies (Karpenko, 2009)."

In its largest product launch in company history, Cummins Engines welcomed more than 200 customers, vendors and media to witness the unveiling of its new QSK95 engine at its Seymour Engine Plant in Seymour, IN on Nov. 1. It took the efforts of 150 engineers to design the QSK95 and more than $100 million in investments to establish a new production line and test facility at Cummins? Seymour Engine plant. The result of these efforts is a new platform of engines that Cummins says will provide as much as 2,983 kW (4,000 hp) and will be the most powerful, high-speed diesel engine ever built.

Because of the adverse environmental effect of Chromate, Molybdate ions had been investigated as replacement for Chromate and the results had shown not to be encouraging. Film deposited from peroxopolymolybdate (from reaction of Molybdenum meta, with excess Hydrogen Peroxide), are more robust than that deposited from molybdate solutions. This was shown to be due to higher fraction of Mo (IV) and Mo (V) that form from Mo (VI) in the peroxopolymolybdate deposited film than the film deposited from Molybdate solutions. The peroxopolymolybdate film contains 40% un-hydrated molybdic acid, tetraperoxodimolybdate and tetra peroxo tetra molybdate. The protective properties of peroxopolymolybdate were shown to be due to the effectiveness of the un-hydrated molybdic acid.

As the mining industry moves further into developing countries in search of new resources, its role in international development is coming under increasing scrutiny. This is a trend that is likely to accelerate, along with the potential for headaches among managers in the industry. Public interest in development and environmental issues is rising as faith in “big business” falls. This has strengthened nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for sustainable development. And it has put more pressure on banks, governments and development agencies to curb corporate misdemeanors. Developing world governments are also becoming emboldened to reject previously agreed terms they do not consider equitable. The mining industry has begun to formulate a response to these pressures but must go much further. Societal and environmental issues must move from public relations to core strategic thinking. Abiding by rules or codes is not a relevant response. Instead, genuine support for sustainable development is required. This will involve delegating the responsibility for engaging with local communities to on-the-ground staff and developing a dialogue with local stakeholders rather than conducting an initial assessment and disengaging.

"IntroductionSeveral new smelting processes have been proposed and developed during the last 20 years. This has been true, in particular, for copper smelting technology. The important impulses for the advances in this field have been the recent demands regarding the environmental protection, energy saving and improved utilization of the metals contents of deposits, in particular that of complex raw materials.The methods developed more recently for pursuing these objectives have been outlined in several papers. In some of them the advantages and drawbacks of certain developments have been stressed. These documents are of great importance for assessing the different processes. The following paper tries to explain some details of the cyclone smelting process taking into consideration a few of these well-known presentations. The effectiveness of operation of the cyclone smelting process indicates that this process presents a significant achievement when compared with other conventional methods.The application of the CONTOP smelting cyclone range s beyond the field of copper metallurgy or the smelting of sulphide concentrates with the aid of oxygen. The research work carried out in the pilot plant of KHD Humboldt Wedag AG in Cologne-Porz also includes the recovery of the metal contents of intermediate products and processing of smelter residues which have to be converted in a disposable stat e, free of environmental pollution. Cyanide-free technology of complex copper-lead ores flotation may be improved through enlarged range of pH values, enhanced copper recovery into copper concentrates due to additional recovery of secondary copper sulfides, as well as through enhanced efficiency of lead sulfides depression in process of new flotation modifiers-based selective separation. Study of the effects of flotation modifier (of metal nature) on minerals surface conditions proved that the xanthate is practically not adsorbed on the galenite surfaces due to minerals hydrophilization. Joint effects of sodium sulfite and modifier enhance process conditions for intensive galenite depression and at the same time for effective chalcopyrite and chalcosine flotation within a large pH values range (from pH=8 to pH=10). Identified mechanisms carry inference that proposed chemical reagent treating method is very promising for selective copper-lead concentrates separation. Potential use of carbon-containing materials as zinc flotation modifier to enhancing zinc recovery in processes of lead-zinc ores treatment has been studied. In our flotation tests we used Shalkiya (South Kazakhstan) lead-zinc ores containing such impurities as carbon shales, which presence impedes the process of saleable concentrates production and gives rise to excessive consumption of flotation agents due to the xanthate adsorption on the carbon. Lead and zinc concentrates were produced by process stages as follows: ores milled to 95% Cl. -0.074 +0; lead and zinc roughing flotation and further recleaner and testing operations. Test flotation in open process cycle resulted in enhancing zinc recovery into zinc concentrates by 21.1% and increasing zinc content in zinc concentrates by 3.96% that evidences promising potentialities for use of carbon-containing products as additional zinc flotation modifier. Flotation reagents play a vital role in mineral flotation. In the past century, most studies focused on the modification of anion or cation collectors and the synergistic effect of mixed collectors, which have contributed to research. In this study, we reviewed brand-new reagents, metal-organic/inorganic complexes, with the functional group of metal ion, which are totally different from the traditional anion or cation collector and show absolute specificity for some minerals. For example, Pb-BHA complex collector was developed to realise the atmospheric flotation of scheelite due to the absolute specificity for calcium minerals. Calcium oleate collector was found to be the effective species in the flotation of calcium minerals, and has been employed to selectively separate fluorite from calcite. Selective adsorption of Al-Na2SiO3 polymer on calcite surfaces proved the self-assembly of H2SiO3 polymer using Al3+ had stronger selectively adsorption ability than Na2SiO3. Also that Fe3+-starch complex was a better depressant for iron minerals than caustic starch and contributed to a more efficient reverse flotation. In conclusion, metal ions are good templates for molecular assembly and can be used to control the structure of metal complexes and exhibit special properties, which provide possibilities for the design of new flotation agents. The fundamental characteristics of ultrafine chalcopyrite flotation were investigated by the Bureau of Mines to establish techniques to improve recovery of ultrafine chalcopyrite. Intense agitation during conditioning was found to improve flotation recovery of the ultrafine chalcopyrite. A split-circuit flotation design, treating the plus 38-µm-size ore by the conventional method and treating the minus 38-µm-size ore with intense agitation conditioning followed by flotation, recovered 95.6 pct of the copper in a 28.3-pct-copper concentrate, This was a 5-pct increase in copper recovery over the conventional chalcopyrite flotation method.

"A t last the legal red tape which has tied up flow-through share financing has been cut. New rules effective for deals signed after 1986 simplify flow-through financing by removing the necessity f or cumbersome agency relationships. But there is no free lunch-the new rules require increased government reporting. And beware federal tax reform promises to have a good look at the new flow-through share rules. IntroductionFlow-through shares have always worked better in theory then reality as an effective financing tool. The concept is straightforward: a transfer of risks, tax deductions, and potential returns. But the mechanics of the old flow-through rules made the transfer of risk impractical to impossible by placing the responsibility for incurring Canadian exploration expense (CEE) on investors. The new rules are significantly more realistic, shifting that responsibility to the issuing corporation. However, every silver lining must have a few clouds around it. In the case of the new flow-through rules, the more obvious negatives are increased reporting requirements and reductions in CEE eligible for flow-through by amounts of assistance received. The new rules are effective for deals signed after 1986, however, so a few old-style deals are still around. Practical Difficulties with Old RulesThe old rules which applied to investments in flow-through shares were structured so as to make it the responsibility of the investor, rather than the issuing corporation, to perform the Canadian exploration expense for flow-through. Since most investors had neither the expertise nor the inclination to incur the CEE, this requirement necessitated the use of cumbersome arrangements whereby the investors would appoint an agent (usually the issuing corporation) to incur CEE on their behalf. Although the issuing corporation might consequently be the party which actually spends the flow-through share funds on CEE, the awkward legal structure of such an arrangement made the investor the ""principal"" incurring the CEE. As such, the requirements of the old rules were met and the investors could receive their flow-through share s."

"In the Utility Nickel furnaces, the hearth and sidewalls are lined with high-Al2O3 bricks. During charging and thermal cycling (more so as the linings on these reverberatory furnaces age), pieces of brick spall or abrade from the refractory and collect on the top of the bath. These pieces are removed using a non-corrosive slag toward the end of the heat when the bath temperature is ~1600°C.This benign liquid can be generated by two methods. First and most obvious, suitable ingredients can be pre-mixed so that the flux (flux A) is isochemical with the non-corrosive slag. All that is needed to produce this targetted slag is heat. Second, in other proportions (flux B), the pre-mixed ingredients generate a corrosive slag that melts completely at -1200 °C and corrodes some but not all of the brick particles on the bath surface. As the reaction progresses, the slag changes composition eventually attaining the targetted benign composition. Using this option, additions are monitored to avoid overfluxing. In both cases, the generated slag/brick mixture can then be rabbled from the furnace. This practice has been successfully used for over two years and has been a factor in extending Utility Nickel furnace life to its current levels (about25% increase)."

A major highlight of Fiscal Year 1993 is the completion of a new research facility dedicated to the advancement of robotics research and development. This new facility brings to the U.S. Bureau of Mines one of the largest and most unique facilities of its kind in the world. Located at the Bureau's Pittsburgh Research Center, the facility consolidates under one roof, all of the resource requirements of a first class automation and robotics research program. The Mining Robotics Development Center (MRDC) is the result of a major renovation of a large under-utilized warehouse-type structure and brings together the laboratories and offices previously housed in five separate buildings scattered throughout the Pittsburgh Research Center's 238-acre site. This new facility will support the computer-assisted mining research program, a high priority, multi-million dollar program that is expected to have a high impact on the health and safety of miners and coal productivity.

Exploration at both Greenfields and Brownfields stages entails business risks of different nature and success rates. Greenfields exploration is exceedingly assumptive and the success rate of exploration or return on investment is low because exploration is an inherently risky business. Brownfields exploration on the other hand is less risky, as the geology is better understood, but generally speaking since the larger ore bodies close to surface have already been found the return is lower. In addition, most exploration at the Brownfields stage is generally more expensive due to extensive use of drilling. Surface geology mapping and expensive drilling have been key technical contributors to most exploration programs over the last two decades. However, as client expectations, logistics, target depths and complexity of exploration programs increase, there has been a growing emphasis on using geophysical techniques to complement other methods. Integration and optimization of various geoscientific disciplines is becoming more important in successful exploration programs of the future to reduce exploration risks, successful integrated exploration requires putting reliable geophysical parameters and correspondent petrophysical property contrasts into an assumed or conceptual geological model. This paper discusses a new multi-parameter geophysical methodology finalized in a unique conceptual geologic model which can be used either as a root model in grassroots exploration or as an efficient tool in Brownfields exploration to successfully find satellite orebodies of almost any size. The application of a new multi-parametric geophysical approach to Brownfields exploration is illustrated with examples from Manitoba, including a past producing nickel sulphide deposit in Lynn Lake and the Reed Copper deposit, currently in development.

There is no doubt that the dominant future source of gold will be the so-called refractory ores, especially those with gold in a pyrite/arsenopyrite matrix. Minproc Engineers is taking an active role in establishing detailed design criteria for a number of apparently competing processes. This involves generating a detailed understanding of the metallurgy involved, systematic pilot plant testing, and the application of advanced engineering technologies. This presentation outlines the approach adopted by Minproc as well as the design criteria for several current projects.

Erratic distribution of values in free gold ore bodies presents severe problems in sorting material in large scale open pit mining. However, an intense program of modern blasting techniques and less than modern gold panning results in good sorting at Houston International's Manhattan mine. Blasting technique is important. If the sample location cannot be relocated because of blasted material movement, information acquired while drilling is useless. So short benches are critical to minimize dilution. Though not very accurate, panning allows for rapid analysis. The more accurate fire assay does not provide the needed speed. Panning can be fairly accurate and errors made are mostly on the low side. Samples of mixed and broken stockpile material are used as checks on pit procedure and to develop stockpile content in¬formation. Added tonnages discovered offset the higher labor costs of this careful sorting technique. The mine is located in central Nevada's Toquima Range in the small mining town of Manhattan, 322 km north of Las Vegas. The mine has four epithermal stockwork ore bodies that are mined in two pits. The mine problem was that conventional ore control was not separating ore from waste. Assays of 6-m blast-holes were used on 5-m centers. The blastholes were relocated by stadia survey after blasting. Holes assaying above the cutoff grade were flagged and mined as ore. This system is practical and useful in high concentration ore bodies or in evenly disseminated mineralization. But it was not practical at Manhattan because of large gold particles and small ore pocket sizes. Ore pockets were often missed when drilling a grid area for blasting. Also, large gold nuggets made assay results unreliable. The probability of a nugget being contained in an assay charge is small. So most results were low, compared to actual grades mined based on stockpile samples. When a nugget found its way into a fire assay charge, the result would be far higher than the actual grade of material represented. In addition, disturbance by blasting created problems in relocating ore. Because of these problems, the grade control program was intensified in September 1979. It successfully separated ore and waste in blocked out ore areas and located more ore in "waste" areas. Known reserves mined to date have increased up to 50% on some benches. The methods used are modern blasting techniques, detailed assaying, and traditional panning of samples collected from active mining faces. These methods allow mining flexibility, to match the variable mineral occurrence in ore bodies. The united effort of the geology and engineering departments has been important to the program's success.
