"Gas injection to promote chemical reactions or mixing is a feature of many metallurgical processes. Often the aim of gas injection is to bring about a chemical reaction between the gas and liquid but most of the past physical and mathematical modelling work has ignored the influence of such reactions. In the work reported here, cold model studies have been conducted in which gas reacts with the liquid into which it was injected. The rate of liquid mixing has been measured as an indication of the mechanical energy transfer. It has been found that gas generated chemically within the liquid is significantly less effective at promoting mixing than the equivalent volume of inert gas. The relative ineffectiveness of chemically produced gas is thought to be due to smaller bubble sizes in comparison to the inert gas case. Small bubbles characteristic of chemically generated gas move with low slip velocities relative to the liquid and lead to different turbulence generation mechanisms.IntroductionIn processes such as steelmaking, copper conversion, bath smelting and ladle steel finishing gas is injected into liquid metal where it reacts chemically or simply serves as a source of agitation. An understanding of fluid flow phenomena in such situations is an essential pre-requisite to the calculation of process intensity and the optimisation of vessel productivity. Traditional physical cold modelling approaches to prediction of liquid flow in such situations are now often augmented by the techniques of computational fluid dynamics. Even with the availability of numerical modelling techniques cold physical models continue to have an important role for validation because it is generally difficult to obtain quantitative data from high temperature processes.Almost all previous cold modelling work has been based on the injection of an inert gas into water or some other non-reactive liquid. "Measurements of liquid permeability in the mushy zones of Al-15.42% Cu and Al-8.68% Cu alloy samples have been performed isothermally just above the eutectic temperature, using eutectic liquid as the fluid. A modified method has been developed to determine the specific permeability, Ks, as a function of time during the test from the data collected on these alloys. Factors affecting permeability measurements are discussed. Permeabilties are observed to vary throughout the experiment. This is attributed to rnicrostructural coarsening and channeling that occurs in the sample during the experiment. The permeability is related to the rnicrostructure of the sample using the Kozeny-Carman equation. The correlation between the measured Ks, liquid fraction, gL and the specific solid surface area, Sv, improves markedly when compared to previous studies in which rnicrostructural coarsening was ignored.IntroductionThe permeability of interdendritic liquids flowing through dendritic structures ·is an important parameter needed to predict the level of porosity in castings. "Electrical steels are used in motors, power generators, and transformers for electrical applications owing to their superior magnetic properties. These properties are attributed to the presence of a significant amount of silicon in the steel composition. Silicon steels are mainly grouped into two categories: grain-oriented (GO) and non-grain-oriented (NGO). The Si content of silicon steels is generally between about 0.50% and 6.5%. Therefore, silicon steels are further classified as low-, medium-, and high- Si steels. In this paper, liquid steel processing practices for certain silicon steel grades are outlined by considering a steelmaking company that integrates a basic oxygen furnace (BOF), a ladle furnace (LF), and an RHtype degassing unit (RH). Possible problems are identified, suggestions are discussed, and conclusions are drawn on the basis of real plant data. However, the differences in the properties and thermomechanical production of GO and NGO grades are outside the scope of this paper. In this study, liquid steel processing of certain silicon steels will be discussed. In the integrated iron and steelmaking process, converters are the primary steelmaking units that are used mainly for decarburization and removal of phosphorus, and for obtaining liquid steel with a specific chemical composition and suitable temperature for secondary steelmaking operations. Ladle furnaces are a type of ladle metallurgy station consisting of electrical and/or chemical heating facilities for adjusting the liquid steel temperature during alloying. Various types of vacuum units are used for decarburization and removal of nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulphur, depending on the metallurgical conditions of the vacuum units. In this study, an actual steel-production company is considered in which the primary steelmaking operation uses a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter with N2/Ar bottom blowing, and the secondary steelmaking operations involve (1) a ladle furnace (LF) heated by three graphite electrodes and equipped with Ar and N2 top/bottom mixing facilities, and (2) an RHtype (circulation) vacuum degassing unit equipped with a top-blowing attachment for oxygen blowing and an Ar-purging system from an up-leg snorkel."

"Hat Creek coal was treated by the liquid solvent extraction process in a continuous plant at the U.K. National Coal Board Coal Research Establishment.Extraction levels of over 80 per cent dry-mineral-matter-free (dmmf) coal were achieved.Total light oil yield was around 47 per cent of the dmmf coal. The light oil was shown to be a good feedstock for secondary refining into gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel.In spite of the high mineral matter content of the coal the solid residue was successfully removed from the coal extract by filtration.IntroductionBritish Columbia Hydro (BCH) and the National Coal Board of Great Britain (NCB) undertook a joint project to test the Hat Creek coal from British Columbia in the NCB's coal liquefaction process designed to produce transport fuels and feedstocks for the chemical industry by the liquid solvent extraction of coal(1), In this process most of the coal is dissolved in an aromatic solvent and the residual solids consisting of mineral matter and undissolved coal are removed by filtration. The resultant coal extract solution is fed to a hydrocracker for conversion to light liquid products and a fraction suitable for recycling as solvent. The light liquid products can be converted to gasoline and diesel fuel in a secondary refining stage.The dissolution of the coal is effected by heat-treating a slurry at a temperature in the region of 400°C which causes some bonds in the coal to rupture with the formation of radicals(2,3). These radicals are stabilized by hydrogen transfer from the hydroaromatic groups in the solvent, resulting in a reduction in the molecular weight of the coal. In the absence of donor groups the radicals combine to form an insoluble high molecular weight product(4). From studies of the kinetics of these reactions it has been shown that the formation and stabilization of the radicals is rapid at temperatures around 400°C(2,3). The dissolution of the depolymerizing coal is, however, relatively slow and the need to ensure complete dissolution in order to achieve a high extraction restricts the selection of digestion time(5). Further, it is important that digests do not contain depolymerizing coal as it may re-form under the applied stress in the filter cake inhibiting flow through the bed and resulting in low filtration rates(6).Thus, in practice relatively long digestion times are generally required in order to ensure complete dissolution of the depolymerizing coal, while it is also important to avoid depletion of the hydrogen donor groups in the solvent which would lower the rate of hydrogen donation to the coal and thus reduce the extraction yield and adversely affect the filtration(7). Clearly it is desirable to optimize the digestion time and temperature with regard to the extraction yield and filtration properties.The precise control of the distribution of products from the hydro-cracker is important for the composition of the recycle process solvent. The principal functions of the solvent are to provide a source of donatable hydrogen and a vehicle for the dissolution of the depolymerizing coal. Hydrogen transfer from the solvent, achieved by the conversion of hydroaromatic to aromatic groups, stabilizes the radicals formed by thermal cleavage of some of the bonds in the coal resulting in a progressive reduction in the size of the coal molecules(8,9) and dissolution in the solvent. The combination of radicals would result in the formation of insoluble material and a reduced extraction yield of the coal(4). Thus to achieve a high extraction yield the solvent should contain sufficient hydrogen donor groups to prevent extensive radical combination. The composition of the solvent should also be controlled to allow dissolution of the depolymerizing coal and to prevent precipitation of this material during the subsequent processing of the coal digest and extract solution. The large scale transportation and storage of sulphur in the liquid state is a relatively new development, but is really only a logical extension of old mining and processing techniques, It is not known who the first person was to win a relatively pure sulphur from ore by melting, but this method was commercially used at least two hundred years ago in Sicily and is still in use today. The Frasch process of mining was invented over sixty years ago, and the development and improvement of-liquid sulphur pumping and handling techniques has paralleled the growth in the Frasch mining industry. During the last fifty years, improvements in the technology of using sulphur have included the premelting of sulphur prior to its being burned for acid production or conversion into CS2 and other compounds. Yet, until fairly recent times, sulphur produced as liquid has been solidified into large blocks at the producing point, broken down by blasting or with mechanical equipment, and shipped in bulk form as a solid.

The extraction of copper(II) from sulphate solution was investigated using LIX®984N in kerosene. The parameters that could affect the extraction, such as equilibrium pH, extractant concentration, salt concentration, various diluents, and temperature, were separately investigated. On the basis of slope analysis, the complex formed in the organic phase is proposed to be CuR2, where R is the anionic part of LIX®984N. The extraction equilibrium constant and Gibbs free energy ( G) of the extraction process were determined. The positive value of H obtained from temperature variation studies showed that the extraction process is endothermic. The extraction of copper was lowest when chloroform was used as the diluent. Separation and recovery of copper from a synthetic copper-nickel solution containing 6.35 g/L Cu(II) and 0.58 g/L Ni(II) was carried out using 20%(v/v) LIX® 984N. The separation factor ( = DCu/DNi) was found to be pH-dependent. A two-stage batch countercurrent extraction was carried out at an O:A ratio of 3:4 at equilibrium pH 1.05 for extraction of copper from copper-nickel solution, followed by copper stripping from the loaded organic phase with 15% H2SO4 at an O:A ratio of 3:1.

Physical modelling of liquid-phase oxygen mass transfer in a water model of part of a proposed new polymetallic smelter has been achieved. A study of solute mass transfer caused by multiple, subsonic air jets contacting superoxygenated water flowing in a channel model of the smelter converting hearth has been carried out. For a wide range of channel flow rates the rate of mass transfer was found to be independent of water velocity. The water model has been used to compare mass transfer for both open-packed and close-packed multiple-lance arrays with circular nozzles of diameters 2.26, 4.95, 10.95 and 24.40 mm. It was found that with fewer of the larger-diameter nozzles a reduction of up to 58% in liquid-phase mass transfer occurred, especially for the close-packed lance configurations. This restriction of liquid-phase mass transfer would result in reduced metal losses in the analogous smelting situation. The larger nozzles, however, exhibited more jet-jet and jet-channel wall interference effects than their smaller counterparts, resulting in an effective reduction in the momentum fluxes of the impinging jets

"Calcium ferrite slags are currently used in a number of copper-converting processes. Despite the industrial importance of this system the phase equilibria have not been fully investigated. Characterization of this slag system is necessary to improve the control of process parameters, including fluxing and operating temperatures. Recently, a modified experimental method has been developed; this involves rapid quenching of slag samples equilibrated at high temperatures with the resulting phase assemblages analysed using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). In the present study, experiments were completed under controlled temperatures and oxygen partial pressures using CO/C02 or H2/C02 gas mixtures. The investigated slags were supported during equilibration by a substrate of the primary phase. This technique removes the limitations arising from the use of crucibles and facilitates rapid quenching of the melt. Experiments were carried out at 1200°C and 1250°C (1473 Kand 1523 K) and in the composition range 0-40 wt.% Cu20, 0-25 wt. % CaO and 45-80 wt. % Fe203. Liquidus and solidus data are reported for the primary phase field of spinel between the oxygen partial pressures of 10-4.5 to 1 o- 6-5 atm. The analyzed compositions of liquids and solids are used to construct the phase diagram of ""Cu20"" -CaO-""F ez03"" system in equilibrium with metallic copper at fixed oxygen partial pressures."

IN THE HALF-CENTURY that has passed since the Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910, the research and technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau's scientists, engineers, and other personnel have helped significantly in improving health and safety in the mineral industries and have contributed substantially in conserving the Nation's mineral resources through improved techniques in the mining, treatment, and use of mineral commodities. From Bureau laboratories have come new materials for industry and better methods of extracting and processing minerals and mineral fuels. Bureau safety investigations-complemented by equipment testing and by programs of mine inspection and education-have brought about safer and more healthful working conditions.

Global Geoscience is developing a Rhyolite Ridge project, a shallow boron-lithium resource deposit, located in Nevada about 25 km from Albermarle’s Silver Peak operation. The main minerals of interest are the boron mineral searlesite (40%wt) and lithium containing clay minerals. These minerals are found among principally calcite, feldspar, muscovite, dolomite, and quartz. The equivalent commercial value is about 7–9% boric acid (H3BO3) and 0.8–1.0% lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) equivalents. Selective agitated leach tests at SGS Lakefield laboratory showed that searlesite can be acid leached between 20 and 75 °C and at a pH lower than 4. On the other hand, lithium can be leached between 20 and 75 °C and at a pH lower than 1. In other words, lithium can be recovered at low temperatures if sufficient free acid is available, which gave the motivation to investigate heap leaching of the mineral. The PLS contains boric acid, magnesium, sodium, lithium, potassium aluminium, and iron sulfates.

The Bureau of Mines investigated processes for recovering a marketable lithium product from the montmorillonite-type clays of the McDermitt caldera. The clay deposit, located on the Nevada-Oregon border, is estimated to contain over 3 million short tons of lithium. Limestone-gypsum roasting and selective chlorination proved most successful for extracting lithium from the clays; 80-pct Li recovery was achieved using either technique. With both processes, lithium silicate in the clay was converted to a water-soluble compound-either lithium sulfate or lithium chloride. The lithium was then recovered as a carbonate by water leaching the calcine, concentrating the leach solution by evaporation, and precipitating the lithium with soda ash. The operating costs for the limestone-gypsum roast process were estimated at $2.02/lb Li2C03; selective chlorination operating costs were estimated at $3.85/1b Li2C03. The current selling price of Li2C03 is about $1.50/lb. A detailed flowsheet, material balance, and process evaluation are presented for the limestone-gypsum roast process. In addition, lithium reserves and resources are discussed and the McDermitt clays are described.

Although lithium was first discovered by Arfwedson in Sweden in 1817, it did not reach any significant status in commercial application until 1908 when Thomas A. Edison received a patent covering the use of lithium hydroxide in alkaline' storage batteries. Edison's achievement can be regarded as a major breakthrough in the development of the lithium industry. In the years prior to 1908 lithium salts had found only modest applications in the pharmaceutical and pyrotechnic fields. The next important milestone in the growth of this net industry occurred in Germany in 1918 when Metallgesellschaft at its metallurgical laboratory at Frankfort-on-Main discovered that the addition of a few hundredths percent of lithium metal to aluminum and its alloys increased-the hardness. This brought into being a new commercial use of lithium in the manufacture of bearing metals. The new material, called "Bahnmetall" (railroad, metal), was widely used for, many years in the manufacture of bearings for railroad and automotive purposes. Its use continued until the early 1930's and there was a short-lived renewal of its production during World War II. Subsequent use of-the alloy was soon outmoded.

The current surge of interest in lithium (Li) is due to the anticipated demand for electric vehicles and small scale power storage. Brine deposits contain most of the global Li resource, however hard rock deposits can be more readily and rapidly developed and comprise the majority of proposed projects. These projects plan to use the conventional processing routes of dense medium separation and / or flotation to produce a spodumene concentrate for sale. The standard route for subsequent processing of spodumene concentrate is thermal decrepitation, acid leaching, solution purification and precipitation of lithium carbonate. This is typically followed by further purification. A number of projects have ores which contain other lithium minerals, principally micas, lepidolite and zinnwaldite, necessitating an alternative treatment route. Several different routes for spodumene processing are under development to reduce costs to compete with brine projects. Lithium is the lightest and electrochemically most reactive of all metals. Renewed interest in lithium coincides with research in lithium batteries and power generation by atomic fusion. Ontario lithium resources are contained in spodumene pegmatites that can form where medium- to high-grade metamorphic volcanic-sedimentary formations are intruded by pegmatite and porphyritic granitic rocks. Spodumene pegmatites occur in at least twelve locales throughout northern Ontario, all of which are in the Superior Province of the Precambrian Shield. Tantalum, cesium, rubidium, beryllium, niobium and tin also were noted with lithium in spodumene pegmatites. Considerable potential remains for discovery of additional lithium and rare-element pegmatites in northern Ontario.
