Experimental results are presented that test the hypothesis that the descaling behaviour of stainless steel slabs following reheating is controlled by interfacial roughening at the scale-steel interface. In this investigation, two stainless steels were considered: type 304 (austenitic, with 18% Cr and 8% Ni) and type 412 (ferritic/martensitic, with 11.6% Cr). It was found that the entanglement that arises at the scale-steel interface was in fact effective in maintaining scale-steel adhesion, under the mechanical descaling conditions used. In the case of type 304, descaling proceeded by fracture along chromite layers, which formed (by internal oxidation) on the austenite grain boundaries; for this steel, the extent of descaling depends most strongly on austenite grain structure, and not primarily on the conditions in the reheating furnace. In contrast, type 412 samples descaled only at the edge of the entangled zone, and showed a greater sensitivity to the reheating conditions; specifically, higher free oxygen in the reheating gas and longer reheating times were found to increase the residual scale thickness. THE experiments detailed by Dr. Hunt,* having demonstrated the fact that the copper contained in the "clay ore" of Jones's Mine, was rendered completely soluble in the bath of ferrous chloride, used in the Hunt and Douglas process, after heating in contact with carbonaceous matter in a close vessel, I set myself to devise a form of muffle furnace adapted to the treatment of large quantities of these and similar ores by a continuous process. The result is shown in the diagrams on Plate X, reduced from the working drawings, after which this furnace was built early in 1876, at Phoenixville, by the Chemical Copper Company on their works at this place. The peculiar character of this ore determined the form, dimensions, and position, with reference to charging and discharging of these muffles. The ore arrived from the mine with from 20 to 25 per cent. of moisture, and when dried at 212° F., or more slowly at lower temperature, it falls to a light incoherent powder, with occasional lumps of undecomposed rock. In this condition it is readily mingled with coal-dust or any like reducing agent, and requires no other preparation for the muffle than the use of the shovel, to mix it well with the reducing agent. As it is a remarkably good non-conductor of heat, it was obvious that the mass, to be heated through in a reasonable time, must not be too thick, while the weight of the mass must be sustained in a way to avoid undue strain upon the walls of the muffle. These walls must be as thin as practicable, to favor the more rapid transmission of heat, and must, therefore, be so con¬structed as to admit of being stayed on the sides at frequent intervals to resist the lateral thrust of the very mobile mass of pulverulent ore, which, for obvious reasons, must be charged at the top and drawn from the bottom of each chamber. These considerations led to the form adopted, viz., two vertical muffles, standing upon very strong bridge tiles, seen in longitudinal section, on the line E, F, and in plan in Fig. 3, on the same plane. (Plate X.) The vertical section of the muffle is seen in Fig. 4, drawn in the plane G, H, of the longitudinal section, Fig. 6, which is the key to all sections. The building is a lofty, well-ventilated one of hardwood frame, with galvanized-iron walls and roof, and consists of five spans running north and south, covering a total length of 236 ft. Each span is composed of nine bays of 1:3-ft. centres, making the total width of the building 117 ft. The refinery is situated conveniently at a distance of 100 yds from the smelters. Through the third span of the building runs a 5-ton electric overhead travelling crane, of a 3-motor type, with a span of 29 ft. The crane runway extends over a railway line, which connects the smelters to the refinery. This crane is llsed for handling bullion, coal, melting kettles, lead pumps, &c. A 3-ton crane of similar type, but with a 50-ft. span, runs through the fifth span of the building and also extends over the railwav line alreadv mentioned. This crane is used to load the soft lead into railway trucks, or to stack lead awaiting shipment in the area covered by the crane's operations.

Five miles southwest of Mt. Holly Springs, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Clay Co. has been mining and milling a white clay since 1896; for use in white cement, as a filler in rubber, pigment and paper, in the manufacture of insecticides, and for other minor purposes. Until late in 1942, when the mine was abandoned because of labor shortage, combined underground mining and surface stripping produced approximately 30,000 tons of clay a year, of which 10,000 tons were refined in the mill. Geology Lower Cambrian Antietam quartzite and the Rilontalto quartzite, stratigraphi-cally older, trend N.55°E. and make a sharp 1600-ft. anticlinal ridge of the South Mountains. The Tomstown dolomite overlies the Antietam quartzite on the southeast flank of the anticline, which is displaced near its crest by a steeply dipping oblique fault. Erosion of the less resistant Tomstown formation has resulted in a narrow valley at an elevation of 700 ft. Directly on top of the Antietam quartzite and at the base of the Tomstown formation is a zone of sandy white clay, lenticular along the strike of the formations, ranging in thickness from 10 to 300 ft. within a mile. All of the formations dip steeply to the southeast, from 65" to vertical. The clay crops out at an elevation of about 1000 feet. Origin and Character The uppermost part of the Antietam formation is sericitic and schistose at many places, and at all these places weathering is in an advanced stage. The clay is the residual product of weathering of this sericitic quartzite or sandy schist. The crude clay has the physical aspect of a sandy kaolin, but there Are large areas in the clay formation that are low in free silica, and commonly the 30 ft. adjacent to the Antietam quartzite is notably free of silica. The overlying Tomstown dolomite has been weathered almost completely to a mixed yellow and brown clay, which carries a zone of nodular and chunky limonite and manganese ore, 4 to 12 ft. thick, about loo ft. from the contact with the white clay. In mining, this zone is an important "marker," indicating where the white clay may be expected in an advancing tunnel. The contact of the white clay formation with the yellow and brown clay of the Tomstown formation is relatively sharp, although the line of contact is irregular and therefore responsible for the lenticular character of the white clay formation. Following is an analysis of the refined clay containing less than one per cent of moisture when dried at 212°F.: SiO2, 67.05 per cent; Al2O3, 22.27; Fe2O3, 0.40; CaO, 0.00; TiO2, 1.05; MgO, 0.52; Na20, 0.04; K2O, 0.88; ignition loss, 7.65; total, 99.86.

THE plant is one of the usual type of Mond plants, and contains no new features worthy of comment. A brief description of the process, however, with a few remarks on the working of the plant, may prove of interest.Producer gas is made by passing a mixture of air and steam through incandescent carbon contained in a furnace called a producer, which, in the Mond type, is a cylindrical casing of steel plate, lined with firebrick, and fitted at the lower end with sloping fire-bars'. Coal crushed to an even size (about 2-in. gauge) is elevated to bunkers over the producers, from which it is fed into a measuring hopper on each producer.The hopper is a cast-iron cylinder fitted with a swing cover at the top and a bell valve at the bottom, worked by a lever and balance weight. When a charge of coal is run from the bunker into the hopper, the cover is closed, and the bell valve is lowered, allowing the coal contents to drop into the producer. Thus no gas can escape from, or air be admitted to, the producer during the process of charging. The hopper discharges its coal through a steel pipe-shaped container called the bell, which projects about 9 in. through the roof of the producer. The function of the bell is to spread the coal evenly over the fire, and supply coal to any portion of the fire as it settles.

The latter plant is unique in being the first installation for the successful use of these gases.

The coal industry in South Africa is briefly outlined. Test- work carried out on bulk samples of coal in the laboratory and used in the design of the Van Dyks Drift washery are described. Factors affecting the selection of equipment and the designed capacity of the plant are discussed. A description of the crushing plant, washery and load out section is given together with performance data obtained in the final acceptance tests. New features incorporated in the Van Dyks Drift plant and in more recent plants of the Group are outlined.

AN instrument has recently been developed for determining the inclination and azimuthal direction of boreholes. This instrument is known as the Tro-Pari Instrument and is the invention of C. Trotter and G. Pajari of Sudbury, Ontario. DESCRIPTION The instrument is characterized by a unit mounted in gimbals and provided with a clockwork mechanism to clamp a compass to indicate azimuthal direction and simultaneously to clamp the unit in its plumb position to indicate inclination (Fig I). By means of a timing ring suitably calibrated in 5-min divisions, the unit may be set to lock after a lapse of time sufficient to allow the placing of the instrument at the desired point in the drill hole where readings are to be taken. The maximum time lapse obtainable with the instrument designed for use in EX or AX size holes is 1 hr 30 min which is considered to be ample time to lower to the greatest depths that may be drilled with this size of equipment. Larger sizes could be developed for larger diameter holes such as BX and NX sizes or the larger oil-well sizes and a correspondingly greater time lapse could be provided for. Up to the present time only the EX-AX size has been built. OPERATION Assuming a borehole is to be surveyed at 1000-ft depth and assuming it will take 30 min to lower the instrument to this depth, the timing ring is rotated through seven divisions which represent a time lapse of 35 min (5-min leeway) and is then returned to its zero position. This operation imparts energy to a spring which drives the clockwork mechanism. Simultaneously the compass needle is freed to swing to its magnetic north-south position and the encased mechanism is freed to hang plumb within a semicircular portion of the frame which is graduated in degrees after the fashion of a protractor. This semicircular protractor portion has a V-shaped notch at each degree division of its inner periphery. The instrument, now in its free position, is inserted in a bronze container made to suit the size of hole to be surveyed (Fig 2). Soft rubber washers are provided within the container to prevent undue shock. The container is connected to the drill rods with three 5-ft lengths of brass or aluminum alloy rods separating it from the steel rods in order to prevent distortion of the magnetic field. The assembly is then lowered to the desired point where readings are to be taken and is allowed to remain at rest until a period of time has elapsed slightly in excess of the time for which the timing ring was set. In the example cited above, when the 35 min has elapsed the compass needle is locked in its north-south position and the protractor locking pin is extruded and locks in the V notch opposite its plumb position. The trip from Denver southwest to Gunnison crosses seven main geologic and physiographic areas as shown on the accompanying map. These are: I Mesozoic and Tertiary sedimentary rocks of the Denver Metro area from downtown Denver to the foothills near Morrison. II Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Front Range from near Morrison to the west side of Kenosha Pass. III Sedimentary and volcanic rocks of South Park (Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Tertiary) from the west side of Kenosha Pass to Trout Creek Pass. IV Precambrian granitic rocks (1,350-1,480 M.Y.) between Trout Creek Pass and the Arkansas River. V Tertiary and Quaternary sedimentary rocks and sediments of the Arkansas River valley. VI Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks of the Sawatch uplift from Maysville to near Doyleville on the west side of Monarch Pass. VII Mostly sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous and Tertiary age from the Doyleville area west to beyond Gunnison. Each area will be elaborated in the following pages but no detailed road log is given since these are available elsewhere. An attempt has been made to point out some deposits and features of interest to economic geologists but it is by no means complete.

O presente trabalho descreve o desenvolvimento de uma nova especificação para a Linha de zincagem numero 3 (LZC#3) da Companhia siderúrgica nacional (CSN), de grande demanda e aceitação, alta produtividade e foco nos requisitos do cliente que tangem qualidade superficial e características metalúrgicas (resistência mecânica) em aços para atendimento do mercado Norte-americano. Este novo produto tem como característica o ciclo de recozimento com velocidade alta para obtenção de microestrutura 100% encruada na saída do equipamento e limites de escoamento e resistência acima de 500 MPa. A combinação dessas características do produto junto com as características do processo tornou a especificação “ASTM-A653MSS80CL1” um grande desafio para garantir qualidade superficial sem comprometer as propriedades mecânicas especificadas assim como a integridade do equipamento. O baixo custo de produção associado a alta produtividade desse produto fazem da especificação “ASTM-A653M-SS80CL1” um produto de extrema importância para a estratégia adotada pela CSN, mantendo dessa maneira sua competitividade no mercado Norte-americano e garantindo capacidade máxima de produção do seu equipamento em tempos de retração do mercado interno.

A crescente demanda por aços galvanizados com alta lubricidade tem impulsionado o desenvolvimento de pós-tratamentos que, aplicados sobre a superfície dos revestimentos, reduzem o atrito entre o ferramental e a chapa durante o processo de estampagem de peças críticas na indústria automotiva. Diante disso, a Usiminas desenvolveu, em parceria com a Quaker, a aplicação do pós-tratamento tipo microfosfato denominado Primecoat Z Auto, com a função de melhorar a estampabilidade de aços galvanizados a quente do tipo GI (Zn puro). Nesse estudo foi avaliada a Razão Limite de Estampagem (RLE) de um aço GI destinado a produção de peças críticas, após aplicação desse pós-tratamento em escala de laboratório. Adicionalmente, foram caracterizadas a morfologia e a constituição química do microfosfato, e o desempenho do aço quanto à fosfatização, à pintura automotiva e à resistência a corrosão. Concluiu-se que o filme de pós-tratamento é amorfo, constituído por Zn, P, Al e Mg, promovendo um excelente ganho de lubricidade ao aço GI, sem interferir nos processos subsequentes de fosfatização e de pintura nas montadoras. Além disso, o material apresentou excelente desempenho quanto à resistência à corrosão.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo demonstrar por meio de estudos técnico- científicos e de casos, como foram eliminadas as falhas devido a quebras dos elementos de proteção de sistemas de transmissão de torque (pinos de cisalhamento) no trem Laminador 2 (TL2) da Arcelormittal Piracicaba. A quebra de pinos de cisalhamento no TL2 são uma constante desde o inicio da operação do Laminador 2, sendo que diversas tentativas foram feitas no sentido de eliminar as quebras porem sem sucesso, o que demonstrou a necessidade de uma abordagem metodológica do problema. Este estudo, baseado na analise dos projetos dos equipamentos envolvidos e das praticas de manutenção adotada, orientou o redimensionamento dos elementos de proteção do sistema de transmissão de torque e o desenvolvimento de um novo sistema de proteção, utilizando o drive do motor para fazer a segurança do sistema de transmissão além da revisão e implantação de novas rotinas de manutenção nos equipamentos. O resultado obtido demonstrou a importância do profundo conhecimento tanto do projeto do equipamento quanto da avaliação e conhecimento empírico da manutenção de campo, conjunto este de informações que é indispensável para se garantir o desempenho dos equipamentos permitindo uma produção livre de imprevistos.

O projeto tem por objetivo desenvolver a padronização e implantação de um Modelo de Governança de Planejamento e Gestão de Estoques de MRO (Manutenção, Reparo e Operação) bem como um Modelo de Reposição baseado em políticas e modelos quantitativos, estatístico suportado de ferramental sistêmico desenvolvido no ERP SAP da companhia que incorpora Práticas de Planejamento e Gerenciamento, para melhor determinação dos Estoques e Nível de Serviços dos Materiais de Natureza MRO visando a otimização e balanceamento dos níveis de estoque com aumento do nível de serviço; redução do stockout; oportunizar a otimização dos tamanho dos lotes de compras para cada SKU; otimização das políticas de reabastecimento para cada classe de SKU e desenvolver indicadores e desempenho para monitoramento e controle do processo de planejamento e gestão dos estoques de MRO. O desenvolvimento, construção e implantação do projeto foi pautado e realizado através do uso da Metodologia Lean Six Sigma e suas ferramentas advindas do DMAIC - (“Define”, “Measure”, “Analyse”, “Improve” e “Control”), como uma estratégia gerencial planejada, com foco nos resultados de qualidade e financeiros, com o objetivo de promover mudanças significativas na empresa, buscando sempre melhorias nos processos, produtos e serviços oferecidos aos clientes.

Durante a estampagem, ocorre o desgaste na superfície da ferramenta devido ao deslizamento entre a ferramenta e a peça. A manutenção das ferramentas de conformação envolve o polimento das bordas ou, em casos mais severos, a substituição da mesma é necessário. Ensaios de deslizamento alternado em revestimentos CrAlSiN depositados sobre aço ferramenta evidenciaram mecanismos de desgaste abrasivo devido a partículas de desgaste anteriores. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar a resistência a abrasão destes revestimentos, onde variou-se a topografia do substrato e arquitetura do revestimento, a composição química e a espessura. As propriedades mecânicas destes revestimentos foram avaliadas utilizando ensaios de esclerometria com carga progressiva e microdureza Knoop. A resistência à abrasão foi avaliada utilizado testes de microabrasão com partículas abrasivas de SiC. Os resultados mostraram que não houve diferença nas taxas de desgaste entre as duas arquiteturas. Maiores taxas de desgaste foram obtidas ao diminuir o teor de AlSiN na superfície e ao diminuir a espessura. Também foi observado uma relação entre as taxas de desgaste e o produto da carga crítica e a microdureza.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has identified ore pass hazards as a significant safety problem in underground metal mines in the United States injury and fatality data show that many injuries are related to pulling or freeing ore pass chutes and structural failures of control gates and ore pass walls. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating these hazards and developing methods to improve safety during transport of ore and waste. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate chute and control gate response to various material loading scenarios. Results from computer models indicate that dynamic impacts from ore and waste rock might be considerably greater than theory predicts. Static and dynamic loads were measured in a laboratory setting using scaled ore (sass mock-ups. Field tests were initiated in an active ore pass to determine actual static and dynamic loads. Field data were compared to computer results and indicated that impact and total static loads were substantially less than the computer model results suggested. Damping factors, normal and shear stiffness, and mass frictional characteristics have a significant effect on particle flow and resulting impact loads.

With the advent of new high-strength magnetic materials, rare-earth magnetic separators have become more common place for processing heavy mineral sands. In many instances, rare-earth magnets have replaced conventional separators such as electromagnetic cross-belt and induced-roll type machines. This paper will present the results from a detailed test program developed to evaluate the performance of rare-earth drum and roll separators for processing heavy mineral sands. The effect of machine design parameters, such as magnetic element configuration and separator diameter, will be reviewed in light of these test results. The impact of basic operating parameters (i.e. feed rate and roll speed) on separation efficiency will also be presented.

The Harbour Lights Mine situated at Leonora in Western Australia, mines a refractory sulphidic gold ore. The main sulphide minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite. Due to the association of gold with the pyrite and arsenopyrite, gold recovery is not amenable to the normal cyanidation process.A pyrite/arsenopyrite flotation concentrate is produced at Harbour Lights. This concentrate has been stockpiled for the past two years.A bio-oxidation process (BIOX«)* to treat refractory gold flotation concentrates has been developed by GENMIN in South Africa. Harbour Lights acquired the technology from CRL BIOX« Pty Limited in Brisbane, to treat the refractory gold concentrates.

"The paper is introduced by an examination of the factors which have led to the present world-wide interest in charging preheated coal to coke ovens. Various possible methods of preheating and charging the coal are considered and reasons are given for the adoption of the methods chosen. The design of the pilot preheating plant for the British Coke Research Association is discussed and its influence on the design of the commercial units for the South African Iron and Steel Corporation's plant at Pretoria and the British Steel Corporation's plant at Beighton are explained. Operating procedures on the pilot plant are described, particularly with regard to the charging of the preheated coal. Design features of the commercial installations, engineered by Simon-Carves Ltd., are explained with emphasis on the built-in safety of the control system of the preheating plant, and the particular problems associated with the erection of such plants on working coke oven batteries. Commissioning and operating procedures are described and the problems associated with the integration of the preheating plant into the normal pushing schedule of the plant are discussed. Preliminary operating results with regard to the effect of preheating on coal throughput on the commercial plants and on the properties of the coke produced are given."
