The St. Lawrence deposit is a large wollastonite skarn (ca. 9 Mt @ 41.3% wollastonite) adjoining the gabbroic-to-syenitic Leo Lake pluton in the granulite facies of the Frontenac Terrane of the Grenvillian Central Metasedimentary Belt. It occurs within a horseshoe-shaped horizon of quartzite, open to the east. The skarn extends over 1.2 km2, and comprises wollastonite-dominant, wollastonite-clinopyroxene, and diverse quartz-feldspar-sulphide (-titanite) layers, interbanded with, and strongly folded within, the quartzite. As in the world-class wollastonite deposits of the Willsboro district, New York State, no carbonate protolith is preserved and calcite is a negligible constituent of the mineralized zones. Wollastonite development is nonetheless ascribed to metasomatism of a metacarbonate unit by magmatogene, silica-rich, CO2-poor (XCO2 < 0.05) fluids, at P = 350 MPa and ca. 560 oC, or, alternatively, 550 MPa and ca. 630 oC. Several high grade zones, averaging >40%, but locally exceeding 80%, of translucent, white, tabular wollastonite grains, with lengths of 0.2 - 2 cm, have been delimited by drilling. Preliminary beneficiation studies yield high aspect-ratio and high-purity (low Fe and Mn) concentrates. St. Lawrence compares favourably to other known prospects and operating wollastonite deposits; having good chemical and physical properties, low iron content, and high aspect ratios (>20:1). In addition, the deposit has a favourable size and location, and will benefit from a low Canadian dollar. Canada currently has no wollastonite production.

Precipitation of ferric arsenate is an effective method for removing arsenic(v) from hydrometallurgical process solutions. The solubility and stability of this compound. FeAs04.2H20, has received some attention in recent years and the reported solubilities of amorphous and crystalline material have varied considerably. This paper reviews previous studies and reports some recent work with a consistent model to explain the variable results. Free energy data for ferric arsenate and its associated dissolved complexes are presented.

"In electromagnetic casting, a liquid metal pool is partly supported by electromagnetic forces resulting from the interaction between induced currents and an alternating magnetic field. Stability of the metal surface is of paramount importance if the cast ingot is to be free from surface defects. Prior work by Garnier and Moreau had suggested that the magnetic field has no influence on the surface stability, but a more complete analysis at Berkeley suggested that surface perturbations are destabilized by the magnetic field once a critical magnetic field is exceeded. More recently we have employed a modified version of the software SOLA to compute the behaviour of a melt surface in the presence of an alternating field. The computed results support the theoretical analysis in predicting an unstable surface. Experimental work is now in progress to examine the stability of a mercury pool in the presence of an alternating field. Introduction and Previous InvestigationsElectromagnetic casting (EMC) is a technique widely employed in the aluminum industry to produce ingot for subsequent rolling. It is a ""continuous"" casting technique (illustrated in Fig. 1) producing ingots several meters high (and perhaps 1m by 2m in horizontal dimensions) at a casting speed of one or two mm. per second. The technology has gained acceptance because the metal is solidified without contact with a mold. Consequently the surface finish of the ingot is usually smooth and the ingot can be fed directly to rolling without machining, the surface (""scalping""). Scalping is necessary with alternative technologies (e.g., DC casting) where a mold is used. Consequently any disturbances that result in surface imperfections of EMC ingot are a serious matter. One type of imperfection is waviness on the surface of the ingot; a line drawn along the crest of a wave would run horizontally around the ingot. This imperfection may be caused by waves on the surface of the metal pool. As the waves reach the solidification line at the periphery of the metal they cause alternate outward and inward bowing of the meniscus at that point with attendant small (but significant) changes in ingot width. Elimination of building vibrations and similar disturbances minimize the occurrence of these surface waves but it is interesting to speculate whether there are disturbances of the metal pool that arise from the electromagnetic forces supporting the liquid metal. These forces are generated by the interaction of currents induced in the melt and the magnetic field produced by the current imposed on the inductor surrounding the melt. The present investigation has been concerned with whether the alternating magnetic field destabilizes the melt surface."

Four types of slope failures in waste dumps are recognized; debris flow, foundation failure, edge slump and blowout. The first three types, although at times causing considerable damage to property and interfering with mine operations, are not usually dangerous to personnel because of their slow rate of movement. The fourth type, the blowout, is considered to be the most dangerous because of its explosive mode of failure and lack of forewarning. The December failure at Verona dump is presented as an example of a blowout. Data from piezometer holes indicate that the blowout was due to perched leach solutions near the face of the dump. The level of water in this zone is very closely related to the rate of leach water application on the dump. A detailed analysis of core samples indicated that the impounded water was due to a zonal accumulation of Jarosite which is associated with a buried dump surface. Drain holes proved successful in controlling perched leach solutions in the critical zone near the face of the dump. Monitoring of the water level in the perched zone is considered essential in preventing blowouts. The use of drain and piezometer holes has allowed an increase in the rate of water application on the dump while preventing additional failure.

"ON NOVEMBER 15th, 1950, the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys announced the discovery of vermiculite near Perth, Ontario. The announcement followed nearly a month of study to determine so far as possible the potentialities of the deposit and quality of the material from surface indications. The mineral was identified by the writer in the field among samples submitted by Mr. Arthur Powers of Stanleyville or, September 22nd, 1950. Within a week of the announcement, mining rights to properties covering a major portion of the deposit had been acquired by commercial interests.Hitherto, Canada has had to import her entire requirements of vermiculite. Prospects of .a domestic supply gave promise of considerable benefit to many industries, particularly the building industry, and to the consumer public. Should the deposit •prove large enough there was also the possibility of exporting to centres in the United States.Field and laboratory studies were continued at the Mines Branch during the winter of 1950-51 as opportunity occurred. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of these •preliminary investigations, to attempt to present the Stanleyville occurrence in its proper perspective with regard to similar occurrences elsewhere, and to review the salient features of the vermiculite industry.Properties and UsesVermiculite is a hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. In appearance it resembles mica, having the same micaceous cleavage, but it differs from that mineral in being very soft, pliable, and inelastic. Colours range from black through dark olive-green and brown to almost colourless."

"Nickel saprolite ores are normally mined as feed to Fe-Ni smelters or Ni matte smelting operations. The smelting processes typically require high Ni cut-off grades of approximately 1.5 to 2.2% Ni, depending on the operation. These very high cut-off grades result in a significant portion of the saprolite profile being regarded as “waste” and hence having little to no value. The Starved Acid Leach Technology (SALT) was developed to recover nickel and cobalt from nickel saprolites and Caron plant residues. Relatively small amounts of acid are applied to ground saprolites or Caron residues in order to selectively leach nickel and cobalt. The leaching is performed atmospherically under low free acid conditions. Nickel and cobalt may be recovered from the leachate as a mixed hydroxide. The mixed hydroxide may be added directly to a saprolite smelting operation or refined separately. InCoR Technologies is advancing the application of SALT at a number of sites. Bench scale testing has provided a relationship between acid addition and nickel extraction in leaching. Conceptual engineering studies have been completed by SNC Lavalin. The simplicity of the SALT technology provides the benefits of low capital and operating cost and an expected rapid ramp up to full production.INTRODUCTION The recent history of hydrometallurgical nickel laterite treatment plants has demonstrated mixed financial and operational performance. Table 1 summarizes the next generation plants built after the financial and/or technical failure of the Bulong, Cawse and Murrin-Murrin plants in Australia. The Coral Bay plants (Line 1 and 2) stand out (and now Taganito) as relatively low capital cost, simple (no acid plant, production of mixed sulfide product), and modest in scale (10, 12 and 36 kt Ni/a). However, the other plants in the list (Ravensthorpe, Ramu, Goro and Ambatovy) are all characterized by financial and technical challenges. All plants have a very high capital cost ($67,000 to $120,000 USD/annual t of Ni production). Ravensthorpe was sold by BHP Billiton after a poor startup. Ramu has had a steady ramp up but only produces mixed hydroxide for refining by others. Goro has had an extended construction period (since 2001), is high cost and has been very slow to ramp up to design production rates. Ambatovy has had a steady ramp up."

Ghana contains auriferous belts which cover 51 800 km2 of its small area of 239 400 km2. From 1493 to 1600 35.5% of the world gold production was from the Gold Coast (renamed Ghana in 1957). This dropped to 8.9% from 1701-1800. For the past fifteen years annual production has averaged less than 2% of the world total. By 1985 only four gold mines were operating, compared with 45 in 1934 and 11 in 1945. Since 1987 Ghana has experienced a boom in gold mining activities. By 1991, 83 new companies had acquired prospecting licences. At least five new companies have started large-scale production. About 650 licensed small-scale mining groups are in operation. The economic and technological factors that have contributed to the decline of gold production in Ghana are discussed. A summary is given of the methods used to mine and recover gold. These cover small-scale workings, dredging, open cast operations and underground mining. The advantages and disadvantages of these technologies and the future of gold mining in Ghana are considered.

The state of sampling practice in South African minerals industry must be appreciated in the context of the changes that the country has recently lived through. These include the entrepreneurship and investment in local mineral developments, the &apos;unbundling of mineral assets&apos;, the rising foreign control of South Africa&apos;s mineral assets, developments in the regulatory environment, and the training that has come to the industry through international experts. In terms of their financial contribution the five most important commodities in the South African mining industry include gold, platinum, non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, and coal. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards form the basis for international trade in two of these commodities and have had a steadying influence on sampling practice over the years. The contribution of the minerals industry to the economic well-being of South Africa and the strong financial links between good sampling practice and minerals marketing, has acted as a driver for improved sampling practice. The state of sampling practice at mining operations of the five main commodities was found to be quite widely divergent with &apos;pockets of sampling excellence&apos; in each of the commodities. The stages of mineral development at mines for each of the commodities have been described in terms of the sampling sites, sampling mechanisms, and associated problems at different stages of mineral production from exploration, through face sampling, blasthole sampling, and in-mine grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical subsampling, process subsampling, and subsampling in the laboratory. In each case the principal errors were identified and their potential impact on value erosion was estimated. In the final analysis it is evident that the greatest problems arise in the early stage of mineral development, and that ferrous metals and coal are particularly susceptible to loss of value through poor sampling practice. Several examples of value lost through poor sampling at the marketing stage that arise from breaching contract specifications, either in terms of grade or sizing, are described. The conclusion is that larger companies with larger ore deposits and greater human, financial, and capital resources are probably more compliant with &apos;best sampling practice&apos; than smaller companies. Finally the message that equipment suppliers are sending is that business is booming and the awakened awareness of the issues around sampling practice are translating into rands and cents spent on improved sampling equipment.

"The purification of rare earth elements (REE) at mining operations is traditionally accomplished by multiple chemical phase-transfer processes including precipitation, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. We describe REE purification results with Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) columns that were developed to improve the speed and economy of REE purification. The SPE columns have the properties of enhanced equilibration kinetics, so that residence time of a few seconds will accomplish selective chemical transfers from solution phase to solid phase. We describe the separation of REE’s as a class from leach solutions and the further purification of REE salts. INTRODUCTIONHistorically the rare earths were first chemically separated from each other and purified by fractional crystallization. This slow, cumbersome, and laborious process was not suited to commercial production. Solvent Exchange (SX) technology was applied to the problem of separating and purifying the rare earth elements when it was determined in the late 1960s that there might be commercial uses for them individually. At the same time the very slow and expensive technique of ion exchange was applied either for ultra-purification of the desired “light” rare earths, or for the recovery and purification of the tiny amounts of higher atomic numbered, “heavy,” rare earths. Solvent Exchange (SX) has today become the standard for separating the rare earths across their atomic number spectrum. Whereas the separation of the light rare earths commercially may take 30 “cascades’ in a modern Chinese plant, the total separation of all of them from each other may take up to 80 such “cascades,” and is only even “practical’ with preconcentrated feed stocks, such as those produced in China by heap-leaching techniques performed in situ on very low grade radio-nuclide free ionic absorption clays.. Ultra-pure materials of all types are produced today by ion-exchange processing of ionic species already separated by solvent exchange.Hard rock deposits and refractory residues of tin mining and residues from uranium mining have been identified outside of China with very high ratios of dysprosium and other heavy rare earths to the majority lighter ones. Many changes have taken place in the "World Cement Market" since Joseph Aspdin discovered portland cement in the early 1800&apos;s. At the turn of the century, production of cement world wide was a few million tons; today, it is over one billion tons. By 1995, world production is estimated to reach 1.2 billion tons. Cement processing has changed from inefficient, small vertical kilns to large efficient, precalcining kilns, and large automated crushing, blending and grinding systems. Consequently the cost of production has declined in real terms, resulting in significant economic benefits to the general public. In addition, quality and uniformity of cement have increased, strengths have increased, and at least 25% fewer pounds of cement are needed for each cubic yard of concrete. Today, cement moves thousands of miles on the inland rivers and great lakes of the U. S., across Siberia and across the oceans of the world. The volume of cement moving more than a few hundred miles is almost 100 million tons, or 10% of world production. Today, on a per ton basis, it costs no more to move 40,000 tons of cement to the United States from the Western Pacific rim or from Europe than it does to truck cement 200 miles. For example, cement shipped by water from Spain costs $5.00 to $7.00 per ton compared to cement shipped by truck 200 miles at $16.00 per ton. This low cost water transportation has been a major factor for the increased movement of cement between countries. THE production and inspection of the materials of war involves thousands of observations. Logical action is generally based on the interpretation of many observations. The success of such action depends upon the accuracy of the observations and the soundness of the interpretation placed upon them. There are countless instances where the observer &apos;sees but perceives not&apos;; that is, the significance of a group of observations is lost, due either to faulty interpretation or to no interpretation at all being placed on the results. This condition is being partly corrected in the United Kingdom and the United States (1) by the promotion of certain principles by Ordnance officials. The term Quality Control has been adopted to describe a system of studying and controlling industrial products by methods of handling observations. In these pages an attempt is made to outline in a non-technical manner some of the ideas used in the handling of observations. Of course the authenticity of the observations determines the worth of any decisions based on them. No matter how brilliant is the theory built on unreliable sampling, it is usually of little practical value. n some fields it is almost impossible to obtain observations free from bias. Let us suppose that observers of speed in miles per hour were available for judgment: (a) a bystander, (b) a motorcycle policeman, and (c) a motorist accused of speeding. The bystander might be unbiased but probably would be very inaccurate. The motorist is usually biased on the low side. The policeman is the only qualified observer and, if over-zealous, he might be biased on the high side. Conclusions drawn from large numbers of biased observations naturally would be of little value.

This paper presents an overview of the current status of mine water management in South Africa. The regulatory framework within which mine water management operates is set out, based on the principles and policies embodied in the relevant legislation. The status of the gold and coal mining industries, with regard to water management, is presented on the basis of studies that have been undertaken to develop water and salt balances for these industries. While the data is not available to quantify the status of ARD in South Africa, the range of typical mine water quality problems faced by South African gold and coal mines is presented. The status quo, problems and challenges relating to mine water management are presented and discussed. It is shown that, while there have been major strides in the last decade, and mine water management and treatment in South Africa has moved onto the forefront of mine environmental management, important problems still persist. There is still a significant amount of improvement required, particularly in the field of prediction of water quality deterioration and the application of such predictions to the identification of management actions that can be applied to prevent or minimise mine water pollution in the shortmedium- and long-term.

Mechanical raise and tunnel boring are new techniques to most of the mining industry. Coal, salt and potash have been bored economically, but until recently boring machines were not designed specifically for rock boring in underground mining. The construction industry has led the field of rock boring since 1854 when the first tunnel boring machines built by James S. Robbins and Associates went to work at Oahe Dam, South Dakota. Since that time the company has built boring machines for tunneling through ground conditions varying from cohesionless soil to hard rock, and in diameters ranging from 7 feet to 36 feet 8 inches. It is natural that the construction industry got the jump on mining with the use of mechanical rock boring equipment. Mines have looked for the long range answer to problems of underground excavation and they have chosen proved and established techniques they expect to employ for the next ten or twenty years. The mine development was laid out to accommodate these techniques.

Recognition of the Growing Importance of Iron and Steel Few Canadians have yet become aware that Canada&apos;s vast iron ore resources, the greater part of which is only now beginning to be developed, will inevitably have a profound effect on the entire Canadian economy, benefitting in some measure the lives of all Canadians. The great iron mining developments of Ontario, Newfoundland, Quebec, and Labrador are destined to make Canada one of the world&apos;s major producers and exporters of this material, on which our industrial civilization is?based. These developments will create new employment, new communities, new transportation facilities, and new investment opportunities. Iron ore is the foundation and the keystone of modern mechanized civilization. The most prosperous nations of the world are the highest per capita consumers of iron and steel, and in these countries the per capita consumption is increasing steadily despite the advent of light metals, plastics, and other competitive materials. Three-quarters of the human race have too little steel -and consequently too little mechanization -to provide for themselves the necessities and comforts of civilized living. Progressively they will demand, and acquire, the machines, the transportation and communication facilities now lacking, and they will win them by making greater use of the world&apos;s iron resources. It is the good fortune of this generation that Canada&apos;s &apos;iron age&apos; is just getting well under way.

From 1997-2000. PT INCO undertook the Fourth Line Expansion Project (FLEX) to increase annual production rates from 90-100 to 150 Mlbs Ni/year (68,000 MT Ni/yr). In 2003, PT INCO nickel production underwent a major sustainable step jump that finally exceeded the targeted rate. This paper presents the changes that led to this achievement. The focus of mining changed. Improving Ni grade was important but only if electric furnace feed met target chemistry so that on-specification slag could be produced. The intensity of diamond core drilling for exploration was dramatically upgraded, mine planning strategy was totally re- vamped and an ore chemistry quality assurance team was formed. In the processing plant, measurement systems were upgraded for better control. Teamwork between sections vastly improved. The final step jump in production occurred when the fifth hydro-electric power generator was added to the furnace grid to allow the power-starved furnaces to cruise in operation at 70+ MW. The Stillwater Mining Company, a partnership of The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corporation, began commercial production of flotation concentrates from the western hemispheres&apos; only primary platinum palladium deposit at Nye, Montana in March 1937. In the fall of 1987 an integrated pilot plant testing campaign of electric furnace smelling and oxygen? blown converting confirmed the feasibility of further upgrading to semi? refined matte or &apos;white metal". In the summer of 1990 the production smelter was brought on-line at Columbus, Montana. This paper describes the technology transfer from the pilot to the production smelter. Emphasis is placed on flowsheet development and the scale factors between the test and production furnaces and gas cleaning plants. The metallurgical results of the pilot plant and of the early months of production of the commercial works are also compared.

THE stock exchange and its functions is about as well understood by the average individual as the fourth dimension. What is a stock exchange? Divested of the rules and regulations by which it is governed, and the facilities it provides for the convenient handling of securities, it would be in its nude state nothing more or less than a meeting place for brokers. The stock exchange in America dates back to 1752, when a group of merchants of New York established a meeting place at the foot of Broad Street for the purpose of dealing in meal and slaves. The first definite orgarization, however, had its beginning in 1792 when 24 New York brokers signed an agreement not to buy or sell public stock for less than one quarter per cent. commission. From this small group has grown by gradual degrees, the greatest organized security market in the world, namely, the New York Stock Exchange. At the present time there are 27 stock exchanges in the United States and 5 in Canada. Based on the volume of business transacted, the Los Angeles Stock Exchange ranks 6th among them. This is attributable to the fact that strictly speaking Los Angeles has never been a stock exchange town, like some other large cities. Take for instance San Francisco, which supported one stock exchange from 1862 to .1882 and has since supported two. No city, by the way, should tolerate two stock exchanges at the same time. It is an economic folly and a senseless duplication that can be compared with rival telephone companies or competing street railway systems, paralleling each other&apos;s lines and always leads to trouble and confusion, and sooner or later one or the other falls by the wayside. While Los Angeles has had stock exchanges of one kind or another since 1896, none of them attracted much attention until 1899 when the present exchange was organized and it did not get well under way until along in 1906.

DURING the fury of the conflict it was believed quite generally that World War II was being fought for and would accomplish a permanent peace. Yet, before the guns were actually stilled on all fronts, the American people realized that the devastated world would continue to be dominated by suspicion and uncertainty. The misunderstandings which rapidly developed indicated that it may prove unwise to rely wholly on mutual international agreements and contracts to avoid war. Before the celebrations of V-Day died down serious thought was being given toward measures for preparedness for the next conflict. Along with a realization of the enormous loss of life caused by the destructive forces of war, the American people came to understand the seriousness of the rapid and unwarranted depletion of our natural resources. During the last half of 1945 the question of stock-piling strategic and critical raw materials for a future national emergency became an intensely live subject.
