STOPING at Noranda" is a sequel to "Mining at Noranda". "Mining at Noranda", presented in 1937 (1), sketches Noranda's history, metallurgical problems, exploration, mining methods, mining details, pillar extraction, and costs. "Stoping at Noranda" deals in greater detail with our stoping, the use of sub-level drifts instead of benches, and the drilling out of the stopes with jointed rock drill steel and diamond drills. Sun-LEVEL DRIFT STOPING: Sub-level drift stoping is almost universal throughout the mine and is the standard sroping method in both sulphide ore and rhyolite flux ore. The features that have led to the adoption of this standard are: (1) Continuous symmetrical drilling in sub-level drifts with no delay for blasting. (2) Large-tonnage blasts Saturday night after the drillers have left. (3) Comparative freedom from gas and smoke during the working days. ( 4) The daily safety achieved by having all stope drilling done in drifts. (5) The safety and security achieved by drilling out stopes, floors, and pillars before there is any weighting or cracking.

DISCUSSION AT QUEBEC MEETING MR. A. V. CORLETT: With drill holes radiating from a common point, is loading carried to the collars, and do you undertake to distribute the powder evenly? MR. R. V. PORRITT: When the collars of the holes, particularly the diamond-drill holes, are close together, two out of three holes are loaded only to within six or seven feet of the collars, and the intervening holes are loaded close to the collars. When the collars are farther apart, the holes are loaded close to the collars. No spacers are used, and the holes are filled solid with powder, this applying particularly to the diamond-drill holes, except, of course, where the collars are close together and some holes are not loaded close to the collars. MR. J. G. L. McCREA: I would like to enquire in respect to the various efforts made to reduce the cost of diamond drilling to the lowest point, what is. the relative cost of the solid bit to the standard bit? It would seem that the solid bit has the higher cost. MR. PORRITT: The non-coring or solid bit gives a slightly lower diamond cost than the coring bit. With the coring bit, the greatest diamond loss is on the inside stones, apparently due partly to vibration, but mainly to the core blocking against these stones. This condition, of course, does not apply with the non-coring bit. Our experience is that the non-coring bit, which drills out a much greater area, has a diamond consumption slightly less than the coring bit. The non-coring bit is sturdier, and is far less liable to damage in starting holes and in drilling through cracked or broken ground.

"The free-world production of columbium ore concentrates has doubled in the last five years. St. Lawrence Columbium and Metals. Corporation has contributed largely to this expansion, its production rate increasing from 720 tons of concentrates per year in 1961 to 2 200 tons in 1965.To follow the normal market development, the Company initiated an engineering study aimed at establishing the most economical mining methods, thus permitting it to increase its milling rate from 1,000 tpd in 1964 to 2,000 tpd in 1967 and possibly to 3,000 tpd in 1968. The results of this study pointed out the advantages to be gained in converting from an open pit to an under-ground operation. This paper describes how the mining engineering department has successfully developed ""stopes"" from the walls of its No. 2 open pit, in order to assure continuity of its operation during the interval required to develop its underground mine."

This bulletin is one of a series of Bureau of Mines reports dealing with mining methods, practices, and costs. A study of this subject was undertaken by the Bureau in cooperation with a large number of mining companies in 1928. This study continued for 5 years, during which engineers of the Mining Division of the Bureau visited most of the larger mines and many smaller ones in the United States, as well as several mines in Canada and Mexico. As a result of this study, 75 reports dealing with underground mining methods and costs at different mines were published as information circulars. Circulars also were issued on 6 open-pit mines and 2 gold-dredging operations. These circulars were written by the managers, superintendents, and engineers in charge of the operations, in some instances in collaboration with Bureau engineers. They were prepared according to a standard outline drawn up by the Bureau to obtain uniformity in textual treatment and in the arrangement and basis of setting up cost and operating data.

Many open pit mines require dewatering or need aquifer depressurisation systems to manage mine water inflow and/or mine floor stability. In many instances these mining operations impact on regional groundwater resources and therefore access to these resources by other users.As such potential exists for mine development to be hindered or even blocked by groundwater legislation that aims to prevent declining groundwater levels and demonstrate equitable use of a regional groundwater resource.There is a need to manage aquifer systems during and after the mining operations, and in some cases stresses on the aquifers and associated ecosystems may be elastic and can be managed with minimum impacts or reversed once the mine ceases to operate.This paper uses the Gippsland sedimentary basin, with a history of declining groundwater levels and mining and petroleum production, as a case study to pose the question: Should period of mining operation, aquiferÆs storage capacity and its ability to recharge be concurrently considered when granting groundwater abstraction and mining licenses for prospective mine development?It further examines that by utilising an aquiferÆs storage capacity and demonstrating an understanding of aquifer system hydrodynamics during and beyond the life of the mine (time), the approval process for groundwater abstraction and associated cost of statutory monitoring may be made less onerous.

The Bureau of Mines developed a rapid and precise method for predicting storage stability of motor gasolines. This method resulted from the investigation of many analytical techniques as well as a study of fuel composition and fuel component gum-forming mechanisms. The first section of this bulletin discusses the development of the prediction test through its several phases, including revision of the standard 110° F storage test; attempts to develop a modification of the ASTM D525 induction bomb test; and the ultimate abandonment of this procedure with the adoption of the 16-hour oven test that was both precise and rapid. The second section comprises a discussion of further studies of fuel com- position, including the reactivity of certain sulfur compounds and hydrocarbons to form gum. The compositions of various gums and inorganic deposits are reported in terms of elemental analysis and spectroscopic examinations. The reactions of tetraethyllead with selected hydrocarbons are also reported.

VARIABLES OF composition and environment affecting storage stability of gasoline-type fuels were studied, utilizing radioactive tracers and other analytical techniques. Changes in gasoline composition brought about by aging were determined and correlated with gum formation. The amounts of reaction of selected gasoline components, measured by radioactive tracers, were determined in a gasoline-type blend and in a mixture of 17 selected pure gasoline components. The data show that sulfur compounds, nitrogen compounds, polycyclics, and olefins enter into gum-forming reactions. Certain sulfur and nitrogen compounds were found to be most reactive in the gum-forming process. Results of this study indicate that the aromatic constituents of gasolines may contribute substantially and directly to gum formation. A mixture of tetralin and indan-type compounds is reactive, and this mixture appears to be the main aromatic portion entering into gum formation. A secondary but significant amount of naphthalenes also appears to have reacted in the gum-forming process. Analyses of the sulfm compounds in a fresh and an aged fuel indicated that elemental sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, thiols, sulfides, and disulfides were depleted during aging, but thiophenes and residual sulfur compounds were not depleted by fuel deterioration.

In these troubled times free enterprise is maintaining vital molybdenum output, while expanding plant, and bringing in new low grade ore reserves, at Climax, the world's largest known molybdenum deposit. Climax Molybdenum Co. is putting $25 million into additional surface plant facilities and other millions into underground development. The expansion program to be operating by 1954 includes a new mining level, crushing plant, 4000-ft conveyor, milling units, by-products plant, and housing for 198 families. Completion of this program and low grade plant will add 10,000 tons per day to present capacity and several million tons to ore reserves.

Limitations on allowable levels of vibration from construction activities generally consider either annoyance or damage. While activities such as drilling and roller compaction primarily create annoyance, the major concern for blasting is usually damage. Many years of research have developed correlations between peak particle velocity and either threshold or structural damage. We emphasize the term “correlation” for two reasons. First, peak particle velocity is only a single-valued representation of a vibration waveform, and does not characterize it completely. Second, a given peak particle velocity by itself, even a particle velocity waveform, will not damage anything – strain does. Why not measure strain all the time? Strain is very localized, and can vary substantially over short distances, so choosing the appropriate strain measurement can be difficult. Measurement of strain is appropriate when either the behavior of a specific structural element is needed, or the overall response of a structure can be adequately represented by a well-selected strain measurement. We will discuss the appropriateness of both particle velocity and strain as deformation and damage descriptors, in general. We will also describe a specific case history, from a tunnel project in New Jersey, correlating strain with peak particle velocity. Finally, we will make recommendations for the choice of measurement type for some common situations.

Mining operations that involve caving of the overlying strata are designed so that caving occurs in a controlled manner by progressive overburden failure. However, there are many cases where the overlying strata bridge over the caved area for longer periods than anticipated and desired. As the caved area expands with the advance of the mining panel, excessive amounts of energy accumulate in the roof strata which will be rapidly released when the overburden eventually fails.

"Understanding the thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) behavior of materials plays a significant role in the safety design of critical components used in aerospace and automotive industries, such as engine blocks and cylinder heads, which undergo the cyclic change of temperature and stress. However, the cyclic changes of temperature, stress and strain make it difficult using the traditional testing methods to accurately simulate the TMF process. In the present work, the Gleeble® 3800 system was successfully applied to develop a reliable procedure to measure the TMF behavior of aluminum alloys. The modified setup together with the new designed program allows the Gleeble system to precisely simulate the cyclic profiles of temperature and mechanical strain. The novel procedure includes the calibration and verification of the TMF setup to ensure the test validity with Young’s modulus measurement, multi-cycle measurement of the thermal strain and zero stress adjustment followed by online monitoring the TMF cycles. The results of the TMF testing of an AA6061 alloy under cyclic temperatures (60–300°C) and various strain amplitudes (0.2–0.6%) were demonstrated. Its TMF behavior was characterized by the typical hysteresis loops and cyclic stress-strain response.INTRODUCTION The thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) behaviour becomes increasing important to evaluate the elevated-temperature properties of materials used as the critical components in automotive and aerospace industries, such as the gas turbines (Hu, Shi & Yang, 2016; Moverare, 2007; Segersäll et al., 2015) and engine blocks (Grieb, Christ & Plege, 2010; Javidani & Larouche, 2014). During the cycles of start-up and shutdown of the engines, these components undergo a complex change of loading. Meanwhile, a dramatic temperature gradient exists on the components due to the cooling system. Therefore, the cyclic changes of load and temperature can give rise to the TMF and may limit the use life of such components (Hu, Shi & Yang, 2016; Javidani & Larouche, 2014; Moverare, 2007). Hence, performing the TMF tests to precisely simulate the cyclic changes of load and temperature to understand the TMF behaviours of materials is playing a significant role in the safety design of these components. For TMF tests, two principal types of cycles are generally employed, including the in-phase (IP) cycle where the load and temperature are at the same phase (i.e. maximum load at highest temperature) and out-of-phase (OP) cycle where the maximum load is applied at minimum temperature (Kliemt, 2012; Miller, 2014). The most significant damage mechanisms in engine components are reported to be OP TMF cycles (Javidani & Larouche, 2014; Kliemt, 2012)."

Stanstead granite has been investigated with respect to its dynamic compressive strength and its strain-rate dependency. A standard Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus has been employed to generate strain rates of up to ~500/s through high-velocity impact. The diameters of the test samples were 19 mm, and tested under impact velocities up to ~20m/s. It is found that even within this limited range of strain rates, the dynamic compressive strength for the granite showed nearly a 100% increase in value compared to those obtained under static loading conditions (e.g. compressive strength of 394 MPa at a strain-rate of 600/s, compared to 215 MPa obtained under static loading). The details of the test are described in terms of incident, reflected and transmitted stress pulses, along with means to achieve stress equilibrium in the test samples under dynamic loading conditions. The advantage and drawback of the use of ‘pulse shaping’ techniques to achieve dynamic stress equilibrium are also detailed.

Middle Proterozoic sulphide ore mineralisation occurs in isolated blocks of the NE-SW trending Delhi fold belt composed of Delhi Supergroup rocks. The Ajari-Basantgarh-Pipela belt forms part of the longest, widest and westernmost tectonic unit of the Delhi fold belt and consists of amphibolites, metapelites, quartzites and carbonates. The metapelite lenses and associated amphibolites host pyritic copper mineralisation. Mineralisation takes the form of sheet-like bodies consisting of ore lenses of various sizes interlayered with host or associated rocks. Massive, banded and disseminated varieties of ore are found. Pyrite is dominant with subordinate chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Pyrrhotite, galena, cubanite, mackinawite, marcasite and freibergite constitute the minor minerals. The characteristic features of the ores suggest a possible correlation with Besshi-type deposits, and the closely associated amphibolites are interpreted as low-K tholeiites of a fore-arc setting

If the downturn was the result of unsustainable economic policy, the path forward has everything to do with sustain-ably meeting the demands of more people enjoying higher standards of living than ever before. Minerals producers must be poised to understand and meet their requirements well into the next decade. Successfully marketing industrial minerals - the building blocks of a growing and increasingly urban world population - will depend on producers? ability to respond nimbly to a rapidly changing and regionally evolving macroeconomic environment. A renewed focus on energy conservation, sustainable agriculture and building practices and consumer demand for products with a smaller environmental footprint will drive product and market segmentation strategies. These trends will not only shape the way industrial minerals producers do business, but also the type of skills and people they will require to run those businesses.

Materials produced in quarries have been used for different intentions such as concrete and cement raw material, asphalt and embankment aggregates, railway ballast. Especially in cement manufacturing, the chemical composition and the uniformity of the raw materials play a strategic role in the economy and quality of the cement process. Therefore, it is necessary to achieve uniformity and desired chemical composition and maintain these at all production stages according to the type of cement produced. To achieve this goal the production planning and pit design play an essential role. This paper briefly outlines the production optimization of cement raw materials in a quarry in Istanbul western part of Turkey. For the purpose it was used the 3D ore body modeling and the geostatistical techniques. The variation of chemical components (%CaO, %Al2O3, %Fe2O3 etc.) and quality control parametres (LSF, SR, AR and etc.) obtained from the quarry were determined. Then the values of unknown chemical components and quality control parameters in the ore body were estimated using Kriging which is one of the geostatistical interpolation methods. The open pit design was also created by specifying wall slopes and taking into consideration of the grade distributions of the benches. The most important revolution in the paper is investigating the effects of the block dimensions in block modelling which is important for reserve estimation. The other important point in the study is using the different range values in variogram analysis for determination optimal reserve estimation. n this study, the effects of two parametres on reserve and waste amount estimation were determined according to CaO% distribution. The study was pointed out that the changing of the two parameters are very important for the optimal mine planning and environmental considerations.

"INTRODUCTION Newmont’s Twin Creeks operation, part of its Nevada operations, produces gold from two large open pit mines. Mined ore is processed at one of three on-site facilities: a refractory mill with two autoclaves, an oxide mill and heap leaching facilities. Twin Creeks also processes various off-site sourced concentrates and ore including high grade underground ore from the Turquoise Ridge joint venture with Barrick Gold Corporation. This paper discusses Twin Creeks’ strategic mine planning process which is part of an in-depth continuous improvement program called “Full Potential.” The process involves cost analysis, phase design validations, life-of-mine production scheduling optimization, mill blending strategy and stockpile management. Through this Full Potential strategic planning, Twin Creeks is creating significant value by increasing near term free cash flow and life of mine net present value (“NPV”) and achieving cost reductions. TWIN CREEKS OPERATION Twin Creeks is one of the major gold producers in Newmont’s Nevada operations (see Figure 1, 2 and 3). Located approximately 15 miles north of Golconda, Twin Creeks produced approximately 28 % of the Nevada operation’s 2013 gold production of 1.8 million ounces (Newmont 2014). The production included Turquoise Ridge sourced gold ore from the joint venture (75% Barrick Gold Corporation, 25% Newmont).At Twin Creeks, there are two large open pits, named Mega Pit and Vista Pit (see Figure 4, 5 and 6). There are 3 to 5 phases in Mega Pit and 2 to 5 phases in Vista Pit depending on the gold price assumption. There is also an underground exploration project at the bottom of the Vista Pit. Twin Creeks produces gold from a variety of ore types requiring different processing techniques depending on economic and metallurgical characteristics. To ensure the best use of processing assets, engineering and processing groups at Twin Creeks utilize a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (“MILP”) model to guide the flow of mine sequences and material routing to various process facilities (Kawahata, Schumacher and Hufford 2013)."

To many who for years have scrutinized the US mineral supply picture, recent, often strident debate on present-day security of many critical mineral supplies echoes sentiments repeatedly expressed in the past decade by the minerals industry. At no time since the last world war has such a flurry of public concern been expressed for the economy's mineral sector. Where once mineral availability problems were relegated to the newspaper's business section or not reported at all, today comprehensive analyses of our international mineral posture are discussed in detail by some of the nation's most respected and widely read periodicals. In past years, disinterest was also experienced whenever the mining industry attempted to carry its message to Congress, the public, and the government's executive branch. Among minerals professionals, the past decade was a time of particular frustration clue to serious erosion ill US ability to competitively produce the vast array of raw materials vital to the economy acid national defense. Fervent calls for immediate attention were simply not answered. These professionals have understood that mining and agriculture are the primary sources of wealth, fulfilling virtually all needs and creating and sustaining jobs. Why then has it been so difficult to raise the consciousness of the American public, and even more surprisingly, of the government and national leadership? The answer to this question is perhaps endemic to how government functions, but pore important, it begs that mining professionals capitalize on the opportunity and the attention now at hand. Carefully conceived and implemented actions by both private and public sectors are needed more than ever before in the past 35 years. To this end, it is vitally important to seek out and resolve the root causes of supply problems and not dwell on superficial solutions. The following discussion attempts to establish a simple framework to view this process. It does not presume to be an exposition of cause and effect, but hopefully identifies some needed steps. Growing Awareness in the 1970s Of all events stimulating current concern, certainly the OPEC oil embargo has left the deepest impression. It was inevitable that after such a shock, man. Americans would begin asking whether the US was as vulnerable to cutoffs of minerals as it was to oil cutoffs. Then, when serious trade security questions surfaced in sonic mineral-rich nations in Africa and the Persian Gulf, the ominous term ''resource war" began to be heard. Countries such as South Africa, Zaire, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have suddenly become key areas for testing our national security resolve. As the US witnesses the influx of Marxist influence in many sub-Saharan exporting nations and the rising threat to free world access to critical materials and energy, the assurance of adequate supplies is becoming a national issue at last. The US is now learning that self-sufficiency for many vitally important mineral commodities has vanished. Of course, it did not vanish overnight; it had been leaking away for years, and the trend was noted by industry and a few in government. Within the minerals community, suspected weaknesses in America's resource posture were sought and found. As a result, the country's heavy reliance on foreign sources fur more than a score of minerals, many extremely vital to security, has been forcefully documented and the case for drastically altering the supply unbalance hits been proposed. The renewed concern for national defense is central to almost all proposals for minimizing US foreign mineral dependence. It is not surprising that many of the voices heard today on the dependency issue are active members or alumni of the militate establishment. Unfortunately, their almost total focus on the security aspects of dependency has tended to obscure important underlying issues which are not directly defense-related. Some of the proposals advanced might mitigate the deeps-dency problems, but they still fall short of curing the underlying problems that have led to a steady loss in mineral self-sufficiency. In almost all instances these problems call be traced to increasing government influence on the free market minerals economy. Some national security proponents seek to attain total self-sufficiency in minerals. Such arguments must he tempered by existing realities. It is easy to demonstrate that the US obtains substantial quantities of sonic essential minerals from potentially insecure sources abroad. That the US will continue to do so in the foreseeable future is not in doubt Uncertainty begins, however, when we try to interpret the significance of these facts. It is important to understand that mineral dependency does not irrevocably lead to vulnerability. Unlike oil, no mineral commodity combines the same degree of universal indispensibility and centralized foreign control of supplies. Moreover, although many US-required minerals are produced by fewer countries than export oil, those minerals cannot approach petroleum in economic or industrial importance. Finally, most foreign supplies come front friendly, secure nations such as Canada, 'Mexico, and Brazil. This, aid more, constitutes a vital element in US economic health as a world trading nation. The title of this study may fairly lead to misunderstanding unless its basal viewpoint is explained at the start. There is of course no chance of misunderstanding the term strategic minerals-for some years past it has been rather generally used to cover those mineral supplies, important for war use, which do not occur in adequate amount on the territory of the Power under consideration. Even here, however, I might add a note of warning. It is commonly understood that the list of strategic minerals will vary, according to what country we are considering; but it is rarely understood, even in Staff studies, that it varies equally according to the particular adversary we happen to be considering. In the present study I have stated the definition in the broadest possible terms, and have at this stage purposely avoided limiting it to any one country or war situation, with the express purpose of being free to bring out certain implications which are commonly, if not always, overlooked. The more important opportunity for misunderstanding is, of course, that my views on the phenomena war and peace do not coincide with those currently fashionable, particularly in advanced intellectual circles. For we must face the fact that for a decade past the natural reaction from war conditions has shattered the public mentality so completely that our public discussions of such questions have very little relation to fact; they are excursions into ideal rather than Realpolitik.
