Continuous, steady-state laboratory flotation tests showed that the recovery of cha1copyrite from a naturally occurring ore, under conditions closely resembling those of plant practice, could be expressed in terms of a first order rate equation.Tests on full-scale plant flotation cells, using impulse tracers, indicated ideal mixing of the pulp in the cells.It was demonstrated that values of first order flotation rate constants can onlv be obtained from conventional methods of analysis in special cases.Analysis of a plant sampling campaign by the author supported a first order kinetic equation for two mineral species, and for the individual size fractions of one of these.The effect of stage-addition of reagents is interpreted in kinetic terms.

A large number of countries in the world now have some regulation for labelling the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in food. For the last ten years, ISO/TC 34/SC 16 has been providing methods, guidelines and requirements concerning the evaluation of molecular biomarkers including GMOs. This activity makes sure that stakeholders on all sides of commercial transactions are satisfied and their marketing or regulatory needs are met. Developing and maintaining a transparent, science-based environment for users of horizontal methods for molecular biomarker analysis is a high priority. Sampling and analysis of molecular biomarkers has become critically important for food and agricultural organisations developing, producing, distributing and selling genetically engineered, non-genetically engineered, identity preserved and/or organic crops and their derived products and preventing their respective destructive diseases. To aid in international harmonisation, a new work item proposal to develop an ISO type A management system standard (MSS) for organisations including laboratories using molecular biomarker analysis and sampling has been submitted to ISO/TC 34/SC 16. The purpose of this MSS is ensuring that determination of the presence, absence or quantification of a particular biomarker with a relationship to a product quality determinant, a marketing claim, a regulation or a plant pathogen is carried out under a suitable quality assurance / quality control system. This MSS will provide an overarching system to apply and manage molecular biomarker analysis and sampling for any organisation large, medium or small in a private, government or academic setting.CITATION:Sussman, M D, 2017. A common practice in the mining industry is to decompose the planning process into different tasks, so the overall process and specific schedules can be constructed easily. Nevertheless, currently there are some adverse effects, such as not capturing the real value of a project by not taking into account the construction of several underground drifts and general infrastructure. Then the common practice is to compute mining sequence and cut-off grade profiles over the life of the mine without constitutively integrating the development schedule as a means to measure the constructability of a given mine design and sequence. Thus, the investigation summarised in this paper shows a novel, integrative way of treating an underground mine sequence and production schedule while considering drift development scheduling. Moreover, it is thought that, because of this original model, the whole underground production scheduling exercise must concentrate on combining the development and the production scheduling to compute a robust and a feasible production schedule.In order to quantify the effect of the conventional way of viewing the planning, the concept of the building information model (BIM) needs to be used, which was postulated by Charles Eastman and has been used extensively since the late 1970s. BIM takes other aspects of a project into account, considering at the same time the spatial relationships, quantities and properties of building components, but especially some kind of model visualisation, which is the advantage to be incorporated. This paper presents the basis for an optimisation model that allows for defining the sequence of the mining development so that the production plan can be achieved. For this, the model considers the space dimensions, time, pattern or strategy, cost or benefit, precedence and resources available. Tests were performed considering a block caving and sublevel open stoping method. Finally these tests showed the main conclusion, that production sequence changes when the building capacity is considered.

This paper discusses characterisation techniques that can be applied to complex waste products from metal production and processing operations with the aim of devising treatment methods for upgrading the metal content for recycling. Two waste streams were selected to illustrate the role of characterisation in adapting mineral processing techniques to provide an effective recycling strategy. Waste products chosen were:aluminium dross, which contains metallic aluminium particles in a coarse matrix of many components; and steel shredder sludge that contains copper wire and other metallics in a matrix of plastic and natural fibres, iron oxides, metallic iron, and other compounds. Characterisation methods discussed include chemical analysis (XRF, ICP-AES, and selected specialised techniques), phase analysis (XRD, SEM, TEM, and optical microscopy), morphology (IFESEM), sizing analysis (screening, Cyclosizing, Infrasizing, Malvern sizing), and general techniques such as particle shape, surface area, and porosity determinations. The applicability of these techniques to the waste products is considered in relation to their advantages and disadvantages, and sampling issues.Treatment techniques considered for the two waste products included comminution, screening, air or water classification, simple water leaching, gravity separation, magnetic separation, flotation, and eddy current separation.Tentative flow sheets were developed for the two wastes. For aluminium dross, it was proposed to use fine crushing followed by water washing to remove soluble chlorides and aluminium nitride, and then desliming followed by flotation of the granular fraction to give a metallic aluminium-rich concentrate. For shredder sludge, it was proposed to use wet screening, water classification, and gravity concentration to produce a copper-rich product and magnetic separation to produce a metallic iron-rich product.

Testing of in situ seals in underground coal mines is critical to determine seal integrity and to provide safe working conditions. In the wake of the 2006 Sago Mine explosion, the United States of America (USA) promulgated the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act (USDOL, 2006) which required mines to install 827 kPa (120 psi) rated seals or monitor and maintain the atmosphere behind existing 345 kPa (50 psi) seals. The purpose of developing the regulations was to prevent the breaching of seals in the event of an explosion in the sealed area.While seal design and construction is carefully regulated in practice, the construction of seals is difficult to monitor, as many are constructed under various mine conditions and the methods rely on prescribed placement of the seal material. Further examination of installed seals is limited to two-dimensional visual inspection and atmospheric and convergence measuring devices. These methods do not accurately reflect the integrity of the seal and cannot detect changes, deterioration, or defects within the seal.If detection of defects, deterioration and damage is not possible, unexpected communication between the active and sealed areas may result. Additionally, the ability of the seal to withstand explosions may be compromised. Non-destructive testing (NDT) of underground mine seals is necessary to investigate if the seal properties have been altered and if the seal remains functional as a barrier between active areas and sealed areas of the mine. Debswana, owned by the Government of the Republic of Botswana (GRB) and De Beers in a 50:50 joint venture partnership, operates the Jwaneng diamond mine in Botswana - the most valuable diamond mine in the world. The mine provides between 60 - 70 per cent of DebswanaÆs earnings, and about 30 - 40 per cent of the GRBÆs income. In 2008, the company embarked on the Cut 8 Project - an open pit waste cut-back to expose more diamond bearing ore to sustain mine life by another six to seven years. This undertaking was much larger than previous cut-backs; it increased the waste stripping ratio threefold, increasing significantly the waste handling fleet of trucks, shovels and infrastructure, and impacted a large part of the materials handling plant which required replacement with new facilities. The project coincided with the beginning of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and a slowdown in the economy. Its $4 billion total life cost was billed as æthe largest private investment project in BotswanaÆ which produced heightened expectations amongst stakeholders that it would redress some of the issues brought about by the GFC and leave behind a legacy of jobs, increased opportunities for citizen owned business and improved social infrastructure.Most of the big project challenges were non-technical and ranged from dealing with various stakeholders?at?all levels, a 25 per cent currency depreciation of the Botswana Pula against the South African Rand, obtaining work permits for non-citizens in a job starved environment, managing construction to world class safety standards, managing the low productivity of construction workers and producing a viable legacy program that satisfied the GRB and stakeholders. Whilst most of these risks were identified in front end studies, the magnitudes were in many instances underestimated. Managing this uncertainty on Cut 8 can provide valuable lessons to other projects in a similar environment, or at least provide the information to indicate that these factors should be adequately provided for in the financial evaluation of a project in the form of budget, schedule, contingency or risk mitigation.CITATION:Jones, G M and J Rademan, 2012. Determination of the adsorbed layer composition and structure at molecular and atomic levels and understanding adsorption mechanisms and dynamics are vitally important for the preparation of surface layers with specific functions. Direct information, at a molecular level, about mineral surface composition, its structure and surface distribution is crucial to perform an efficient separation process for mineral beneficiation. This information is equally important for modifying surface properties of industrial minerals for specific applications such as: fillers, composites, weathering resistance, etc. An understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of the interaction of first adsorbed organic molecules with mineral surfaces is a fundamental requirement for the prediction and control of the macroscopic surface properties governing the efficiency of separation technologies or new material formulations. The developed infrared external reflection technique has a unique ability to study interface phenomena, at a molecular level, on heterogeneous substrates. The variety, precision and reliability of information about the interface phenomena delivered by this technique is superior to any other single technique. The experiments are fast and non-destructive. High sensitivity (starting from 20 per cent of the monolayer) in situ collected information in a multiphase system, even in the region of strong absorption of the substrate, makes this technique a very valuable experimental tool. The complexity of the recorded reflection spectra, their sensitivity to variations of the optical properties of all bulk and surface components and their spatial distribution in the system under investigation, are in fact the major strengths of this technique. A few examples of the application of this multi-diagnostic technique, for monitoring surface modifications of semi-soluble minerals for selective flotation, will be discussed in detail in this paper.

Rampura Agucha open pit mine has successfully been excavated to a depth of 320 m, incorporating multistage working. The key to success is the implementation of presplitting as control blast measures at every stage of mining, including intermediate cut backs, in addition to the final wall. The major challenges encountered in establishing presplitting in the hang wall as compared to the footwall of the mine are:reversely dipping foliation, ie dipping into the hang wall itselfstriking obliquely at an angle of 20–30° with regards to the general strike of the pit wallthe presence of numerous geological planes of weaknesses like major faults, slips, etc.Control blast parameters like hole inclination, spacing and stand-off with buffer row were chosen initially from the literature survey and were subsequently fine-tuned by field trials to the mine geo-mining conditions of the hang wall. "The Syama Gold Mine, located in southern Mali, was established in 1990 by Broken Hill Propriety Limited (BHP). The operation began treating oxide, and in 1994 it transitioned to processing hard and refractory ore based on ‘whole-of-ore’ roasting. In 1996, BHP was succeeded by Randgold Resources and the operation ran until 2001, when it was placed into care and maintenance.The Syama ore is classified as a double refractory ore with pyrite occluding the fine grained gold present in the ore and high levels of organic carbon presenting a challenge in terms of preg-robbing behaviour. The ore is extremely competent and this combination of metallurgical features was the main source of metallurgical problems encountered by the previous owners.Resolute Mining Limited (RML) acquired the Syama project in 2004. Following a feasibility study and the development of a revised processing flow sheet the plant was recommissioned in 2008 using a combination of old and new equipment. The revised flow sheet enabled primary sulfide ore to be treated by flotation and roasting of the concentrate to produce a calcine suitable for conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing.Commissioning and ramp up of the plant was a troubled process, with monthly gold production being as low as 3000 oz in 2010. Poor availability of equipment and lower-than-forecast recoveries were the primary contributors.During the last five years, RML has utilised a systematic approach to improve production, focusing on mechanical reliability, metallurgical recovery and process bottlenecks. Modifications to the circuit have been as a result of both innovation and the application of technological improvements. Improvements have been made to the flotation, roasting and CIL circuits and RML has introduced a deslime circuit to treat flotation concentrate, in addition to the very successful commissioning of a new 1 Mt/a oxide circuit in December 2014. These changes have resulted in gold production increasing to more than 20 000 oz per month in 2015.This paper presents the processes, change implementation and outcomes of the modifications made to the sulfide circuit to address the availability and recovery problems.Apart from the expansion of an existing, world-class deposit and discovery of new resources, future improvements on the path to a class-leading gold mine include the continued reduction of the unit cash cost, increase in overall sulfide circuit gold recovery, increased throughput through continued innovation and consistency in the plant’s operation.Citation:Sinclair, R, Hunter, I and Landwehr, D, 2016. The grouping and segregation error is one of Gy’s seven errors that cannot be measured in any qualitative manner because of its transient and changing characteristics each time the sample is handled mechanically. Attempts to calculate the mean and variance of the segregation error is considered by some as ‘an exercise in futility’ that would not help us achieve representative sampling. This research is aimed at understanding the process of segregation of dense, finely divided and dilute particulate materials supported in a clean quartz substrate during intense agitation. Several mixtures of fine-grained materials including steel, tungsten carbide and gold grains were used in these experiments. Four hundred grains of each of the minerals and metals at a top size of 2 mm were mixed with approximately 600 g of finely ground quartz material (95 per cent passing 2000 microns) in a 500 ml plastic jar with a sealable lid. The mineral–?metal mixtures were analysed in three steps using microfocus X-ray computed tomography. Step one consisted of rolling the containers on a flat surface in an attempt to concentrate the mineral and metal grains in the core of the supporting substrate; this is a base case that can be reconstructed after each session of analysis. The second step involved gentle and vigorous shaking of the mixtures in order to segregate the denser minerals and metals from the supporting quartz substrate. In some cases, a third step involved splitting the sample through a riffle splitter. Three-?dimensional images of the surface of each grain, its volume and its X-, Y- and Z-coordinates, before and after intense agitation of the container, were interpreted from the reconstruction of the tomographic X-ray data. The spatial analysis of grains using cell declustering and 3D variography provided a useful means of characterising the distribution of the grains in space and the extent to which they had become segregated during the process of agitation. Spatial analysis indicates that in general, grouping and continuity of grains is weakly developed. The modelled nugget effect remains high for most tests, indicating that grains of similar size did not group together strongly. Agitation through rolling provided the best continuity, although not consistently in the long axis of the plastic jar. The nugget effect was consistently highest, and the range of continuity shortest in samples that had been split, indicating that the grouping and continuity were reduced through splitting the sample. Initial results indicate that very little segregation of the minerals and metals occurs in the quartz substrate. This is somewhat counter-intuitive, but suggests that the effects of agitation on mixtures of dense minerals and metals in substrates of lower density do not lead to excessive segregation. Differences in behaviour between dense materials in response to agitation are evident. Grains of different composition and shape did not group and segregate in a predictable manner in response to the agitation methods. "Roasting of sulfide concentrates and refractory ores is an important process step in the production of metals and chemicals. Sulfides of iron, zinc, copper and other metals are oxidised with air between 600 and 1000¦C into metal oxides or sulfates and gaseous sulfur dioxide. Roasting of gold concentrates and ores is a typical processing step used to produce a porous calcine suitable for cyanide leaching. During roasting, elements posing problems are removed through: oxidation (carbon, sulfur, arsenic and antimony) or volatilisation (mercury, chlorides and tellurides, as well as arsenic and antimony).This paper focuses on the environmental aspect of roasting using fluidised bed technology. The approach is to show that roasting is an attractive solution for refractory ore pretreatment since, on the one hand, it is an efficient technique yielding high gold recovery rates, while on the other it is able to comply with current stringent international environmental regulations. In that respect, roasting is compared to alternative processes, ie pressure oxidation (POX), bio-oxidation (BIOX) and ultra-fine grinding (UFG). Roaster high gold recovery rates are ensured through roasting-leaching test work, which allows the derivation of respective roasting parameters that are easily achieved in an industrial plant. On the other hand, key elements of the roasting process are analysed, which make it an efficient and sustainable technology, ie the possibility for energy recovery, the removal of off-gas impurities during the different gas cleaning steps (handling of arsenic, mercury emissions and further hazardous dust and gas emissions) and the treatment of the SO2-gas in order to produce sulfuric acid, and finally the treatment of the effluent produced. Minnovare identified the potential to improve production drilling outcomes in underground long-hole stopes through the adaptation of new technology which was under ongoing development. An approach to Evolution Mining resulted in the companies agreeing to a collaborative agreement to further develop the technology for use on underground long-hole drilling equipment. During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing setup/alignment process was compared to the new technology system with the following observations: • Using the existing process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/ 300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. • The new technology was proven to limit rig setup/alignment error, reducing average blasthole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: • Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. • This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). • With the system implemented as standard practice following results of the FY18 trial and continued success, overall dilution for full year FY19 showed continued reduction to 12% Evolution has continued use of the new technology at Cracow, where the improved accuracy has allowed the extraction of narrower stopes where drilling accuracy is critical. Evolution has also deployed the technology at the Mungari operation and has stipulated that the contractor use the technology at the Mt Carlton operation, which is currently under development. Future implementation of the Development Optimiser system should be verified by commencing additional trials to include a larger data base for validating the initial trial results.

The world-class Golden Mile gold deposit in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia is part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) operation, which is wholly owned by Northern Star Resources Limited. Current mining operations across the Golden Mile is dominated by the large Fimiston Open Pit, which is over 4 km long, 1 km wide and 600 m deep. It is part of a larger mineralised system that stretches over 8 km and includes the Mt Charlotte Underground Mine, which is also operated by KCGM, as well as numerous historical open pit and underground mines. This mineralised system has been continuously mined for over 125 years and is set to continue well into the future. The Golden Mile deposit is in the Norseman Wiluna Greenstone Belt which is made up of a series of mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks that have been structurally deformed and intruded by granitic rocks. There are two main styles of mineralisation across the Golden Mile. Firstly, the Fimiston style, which consists of shear hosted Golden Mile lodes with abundant sulfides and tellurides and secondly, the Charlotte style that comprises younger stockwork veins. Fimiston style mineralisation is the primary style of mineralisation within the Fimiston Open Pit. Historically, in excess of 3500 m of underground development and over 755 stopes were mined prior to the consolidation of the area and the commencement of Fimiston Open Pit operation. Old underground workings, known as voids, are either empty or backfilled and extend to more than 1.2 km below surface. Although they are a routine part of mining operations at KCGM, voids pose a significant challenge for the geology team in terms of planning and executing exploration and grade control drilling, geological modelling, grade and tonnage estimation, drill and blast design and execution, marking up ore block designs, mining, and reconciliation. This paper will discuss the various challenges faced by the geology team due to the presence of voids, solutions used to overcome some of these challenges and the results of these activities.

Rather like the mythical "Economic Man" "an employer" in this context must necessarily be an abstraction, and the views possessed by such an abstraction, a composite of many views known to have been expressed. Not even the complex Conciliation and Arbitration legislation in this country provides any helpful specifications, except in one peculiar particular. The Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Act provides an almost totally tautological definition, except in that one oddity referred to above. It is this : "An employer means any employer in any industry, and includes any person who is usually an employer in an industry, and also includes a Club." No doubt there is some perfectly justifiable reason for such specific and unique particularity in an otherwise meaning- less definition. That need not trouble us in this exercise.

A combination of the needs of business, employee desires and safety and health considerations is stimulating increasing attention to the time spent by people at work and the timing of that work. Particularly we are seeing: - innovative work schedules for 24-hour mining businesses; and - response from industry to accommodate the needs, even the desires, of employees in return for systems which are more productive and more capital efficient. There appears to be an evolutionary trend for business management to become more sophisticated and responsive to the need for achieving close to best cost work schedules to sustain continuous improvement. The underlying motivating forces driving this trend for improved techniques in organising attendance at, and time spent at work, is the seemingly inseparable combination of technological advance and ever-increasing accumulation of capital. The mining industry has not remained untouched by this thrust for ever-increasing need for best use of labour, to adopt advances in technology and to provide attractive opportunities for putting accumulated capital to work. An essential component of this on-going thrust is a substantial effort by the mining industry to improve the performance of labour by providing most-productive work schedules.

The use of hydrogen as a reducing agent can substantially reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the ironmaking process. Iron ore fines can be reduced in a fluidised bed (FB) using hydrogen (H2) at high temperatures (>800°C), although several studies have reported the sticking of particles which causes the bed to defluidise, effectively shutting down the process. Here, we report results from the reduction of New Zealand (NZ) titanomagnetite (TTM) ironsands in a small-scale laboratory FB (100 g) at temperatures between 800–1000°C using H2 flow rates up to 5 standard L/min. No sticking phenomena are observed under any of these conditions, which is attributed to the formation of a stable titanium-bearing oxide layer on each particle’s exterior, preventing iron-iron contact at the particle surfaces. Pre-oxidised NZ TTM ironsands have also been studied and shown not to stick. Interestingly, at lower reaction temperatures the reduction kinetics for pre-oxidised ironsands is faster than for as-received ironsands. This increased kinetic rate can be attributed to the preoxidation stage inducing micro-fractures that create a void for the hydrogen to diffuse into the inner regions of the particle. In addition, oxidation of TTM appears to segregate the particle into two distinct phases, a high Aluminium-Magnesium (Al-Mg) phase and a high Titanium (Ti) phase. The findings are important as increasing the operating temperature of the FB reactor results in a faster reaction rate and higher gas utilisation, making the process more economically attractive. Furthermore, oxidation of NZ TTM ironsands results in a faster reduction rate at lower temperatures (800°C– 900°C) opening the opportunity to reduce the reaction temperature which might be beneficial in a final commercial-scale process.

There are numerous individual gold deposits in the Archaean greenstone belts of Western Australia, but only 26 have productions and/or quoted reserves in excess of 10 tonnes Au. Most gold production has come from mineralization in shear zones, quartz veins or stockworks in volcanic or intrusive host rocks, particularly tholeiitic basalts or dolerites metamorphosed at sub-amphibolite facies (e.g. Kalgoorlie). Significant prod- uction has also come from BIF-hosted deposits (e.g. Hill 50), and large reserves are quoted for mafic hosts at high metamorphic grade (e.g. Big Bell). Most deposits have marked structural control, great depth extension, and are characterized by zoned alteration haloes of pyritization (with Au), K-metasomatism and carbonation. On the regional scale, most larger volcanic- or intrusive-hosted deposits occur in younger (ca 2.8 b.y.) rift-phase green- stones (Norseman-Wiluna Belt). These belts also have a high prospectivity (36 kg Au/km2 of greenstone belt). Younger (ca 3.0 b.y.) and older (ca 3.5 b.y.) platform-phase green stones of the Murchison and Sodthern Cross Provinces and the east Pilbara, respectively, are progressively less prospective (14 kg Au/km2 and 0.8 kg Au/km2, respectively) and also have progressively smaller deposits. The important regional- and local-scale characteristics of most gold deposits can be explained in terms of a metamorphic- replacement model. In this model, metamorphic H2O-CO2 fluids, focussed by faults and shear zones, infiltrated host rocks and deposit gold at 350 + 50¦C and 1-2 kb, largely in response to fluid-wallrock interaction. In many large deposits, gold precipitation was synchronous with sulphidation of Fe-rich host rocks, but the diversity and abundance of smaller deposits reflects the variety of reactions precipitating gold from ubiquitous, auriferous metamorphic fluids. Regional variations in abundance and size of deposits relate to factors such as tectonic setting, alteration styles and possibly source rocks.

In his account of the Thackaringa sulphide ore, Lawrence (p. 92) reports the presence of valleriite as a minor accessory in chalcopyrite. He says that it is readily identified by its intensive anisotrophy and reflection pleochroism. He also gives (p. 87) the chemical formula as Cu8Fe4S7 Recent work by Evans et al. (1964), Chamberlain and Delabio (1965), and Schidlowski and Otteman (1966) suggests that most material identified as valleriite is, in fact, mackinawite. Mackinawite and valleriite are both extremely anisotropic and strongly reflection pleochroic, and so with fine-grained material it would be hard to distinguish them optically.Mackinawite, according to Evans et al. (p. D66) is a copper-free iron sulphide (PeS) with small quantities of nickel, whereas valleriite is considered to be a dimorph of chalcopyrite (CuPeS2 ). They found that mackinawite is much more widespread than valleriite, and, unlike the latter mineral, is commonly included in other sulphides, particularly chalcopyrite.Lawrence (p. 92) states that the valleriite inclusions are up to 0·01 mm long, so that an electron probe microanalysis should be quite feasible and provide a ready answer to this query.L. The strength reduction method (SRM) has been implemented in the FLAC3D finite difference software and applied to coalmine entry support evaluations. The FLAC3D numerical models have been calibrated against instrumented field sites in varying geologies, depths and field stress conditions. The calibration between the field and model results obtained a satisfactory match for rock deformation and support response. Previous research has also developed good correlations between numerical model stability estimations using the SRM and empirically derived stability estimations using the analysis of roof bolt systems (ARBS) software and the coalmine roof rating (CMRR). The purpose of this paper is to further apply the SRM to investigate how specific geotechnical and support parameters can impact coalmine entry stability. Results from different studies demonstrate how the calibrated models were used to investigate a few of the well-known questions in both mine design and support design. For mine design the impact of strong and weak beds in the roof strata, rotating the principal stresses and weakening the floor on excavation stability is investigated. For support design the impact of support length, support spacing and adding cable bolts to the design is demonstrated. These scenarios are evaluated in developmental coalmine entries for a variety of geology and field stress conditions. Stability factors are calculated for each scenario using the SRM. The underground Neves Corvo copper-tin mine in southern Portugal currently disposes of its tailings in a ætraditionalÆ wet tailings impoundment. With the development of new technologies for preparation and transport of thickened tailings or paste, alternative tailings disposal options have become available that provide a more sustainable water management system and a higher degree of environmental protection. In addition, growing European resistance towards subaqueous disposal may well result in mandatory use of dry disposal methods in the near future. Twenty-four tailings disposal alternatives were evaluated through a cost-effective and easily-implementable bench-scale geochemical screening program conducted at site. Since the tailings are pyrite-rich and highly acid generating, particular emphasis was placed on monitoring likely indicators of sulfide oxidation under the various simulated disposal scenarios. Dependent parameters investigated as part of the program included moisture content, use of alkaline additives (lime, cement), use of a bactericide, and agitation. Response parameters included paste pH, specific conductance, and temperature as indicators of oxidation. The testing was carried out for 30 weeks. Results indicate that a number of relationships between the geochemical stability of the samples (ie sulfide oxidation) and sample characteristics can be readily identified. Based on the results of the screening program, a limited number of tailings mixtures have been selected for further long-term testing in field weathering cells to aid in the identification of the optimal mix design for future tailings disposal at the Neves Corvo Mine. This type of testing provides an inexpensive and reliable methodology for semi-quantitative comparison between tailings disposal alternatives, in particular at locations where more rigorous evaluation through long-term, fully replicated testing is not immediately feasible.
