The purpose of this report is to clarify the interpretation of some phases of previous progress reports5/ on the use or omission of stemming that have been brought to the attention of the authors by readers. As the stemming problem was approached from an entirely disinterested viewpoint and the data were presented impartially, results of investigations published in previous reports5/ were obtained under a definite set of conditions and procedure, and they may of may not be duplicated under different conditions and procedure in actual mining practice. Final conclusions regarding the use or omission of stemming in blasting have not been reached pending completion of all aspects of this investigation.

In this work a mathematical model was developed to study the effect of electromagnetic force on the magnesium melt containing nonmetallic inclusion in an electrical isolated channel. The electromagnetic force exerted on the inclusion induced by DC current field was calculated. A three dimensional turbulent flow equations were solved numerically to compute the velocity field within the channel. On the basis of computed velocity and magnetic fields, the trajectories of inclusions were calculated using the equations of motion for inclusions. Parametric studies were carried out to evaluate the effect of various parameters such as current density, channel diameter and particle density on the removal efficiency of inclusions from magnesium melts.

For more than a decade, changes have occurred each year that have improved the regulatory and business climate for mining in Alaska. These changes have taken place during Republican and Democratic governorships as well as when the state House of Representatives and Senate were controlled by either party. During some years, the changes have been relatively minor. In others, including the 2003 legislative session, the changes could only be characterized as massive. These improvements have encouraged exploration. This, in turn, has resulted in some major new discoveries. But Alaska is essentially unexplored and tremendous opportunities remain.

AT the New York meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers held in February, 1926, W. H. Bassett and J. C. Bradley presented a paper entitled "Exudations on Copper Castings."' The purpose of the present paper, as the title suggests, is to call attention to somewhat similar phenomena which the authors have encountered in brass and bronze. From a study of the examples given, a more-or-less speculative theory of "inverse segregation" is advanced. Protuberances on Admiralty Brass In the rolling mill of the Scovill Manufacturing Co., there have been found quite commonly bars of certain alloys which had a sort of shaggy roughness on the surface due to slight metallic protuberances. No special attention was paid to these until some bars were found on which these protuberances were heavy enough at the bottom of the bars to produce a blistered appearance. A sample of the protuberances was milled off the surface of the bar illustrated (Fig. la) and upon analysis was found to contain 66.66 per cent. copper, 4.02 per cent. tin and 0.03 per cent. lead, whereas the average composition of the bar was 70.21 per cent. copper, 1.21 per cent. tin, and 0.01 per cent. lead. A sample of the shaggy-rough protuberances at the very top of a bar was also analyzed and was found to contain 2.45 per cent. tin, indicating that it was probably of the same origin as the blistered areas. These results were not entirely unexpected for previous analyses of this alloy had revealed that the surface was richer in tin than the rest of the bar. This, of course, is contrary to what we would expect from a consideration of the equilibrium diagram and has been called "inverse segregation." Fig. 16 is a cross-section of a bar through the protuberances on the surface. It reveals that there is a decidedly different structure through the raised areas and seems to indicate that the bar originally solidified

The post-World War II expansion of the Soviet petroleum industry has established the U.S.S.R. as a major oil-producing nation and has led to Russian reentry into the international petroleum trade. The rapid growth of Soviet petroleum production will allow the U.S.S.R. to displace Venezuela as the world's second largest oil-producer in 1960 and to narrow further the gap between Soviet and U.S. crude-oil production. U.S.S.R. crude oil output was only a tenth of U.S. production in 1946, but it will be more than a third at the end of 1960 and more than half in 1965. The Soviet Seven-Year Plan (1959-65) for oil provides for substantial increases in petroleum production, refining, storage, and distribution facilities. Crude oil production and primary distillation capacity are to double, considerable storage capacity is planned, and pipelines for crude oil and petroleum products are to increase threefold. According to the Soviets, the initial phases of this plan (1959 and 1960) have been completed successfully. However, this progress has been achieved with difficulty.

A preliminary survey was performed to investigate the impregnation of relatively weak, porous volcanic tuff and a relatively strong, dense sandstone with five different monomers. Increases in compressive strengths by factors of 2 to 5, and elastic moduli by factors of 2 to 3.5, are reported for natural rocks (tuff., sandstone, dacite), which were impregnated with five monomers (methyl methacrylate; chlorostyrene; 40 percent TMPTMA-60 percent styrene; 40 percent TMPTMA-60 percent chlorostyrene; 60 percent polyester-40 percent styrene); polymerization took place after monomers were forced into the rock. Impregnation was performed (1) by pressurizing rock specimens from one end, or (2) by a vacuum-soak operation. Polymerization was accomplished by either radiation or chemical initiation techniques. Strength improvement is dependent on (1) the type of monomer used, (2) the amount of polymer incorporated into the rock, and (3) the degree of water saturation of the rock. Water saturation strongly reduced the effectiveness of the method for the polymer systems tested. The more viscous monomers (for example, 60 percent polyester-40 percent styrene) were more effective in displacing the water from the rock, and compressive strengths of wet rock were doubled with these systems. Water saturations ranging from 25 to 100 percent of maximum saturation gave essentially identical results. Further tests on other types of mine rock; including shale and coal, are planned. Water-compatible polymer systems should be developed, or present systems should be suitably modified. For application to tunnel stabilization, design studies evaluating the improvement in rock strength and its influence on the support system are also recommended.

Bateman Modular (previously Van Eck and Lurie) has been building and supplying the mining industry with modular DMS plants for the last 30 years. These DMS modules range in capacity from 1 tph to 200 tph. The most popular unit produced by Bateman Modular over the years has been the 50 tph module. Development In the last 7 years a need has arisen from the industry to provide Modular DMS plants that can treat higher tonnages (150 to 200 tph). The first DMS provided to the mining industry based on the modular concept was a 150 tph DMS Module to MIBA in the DRC. Since then Bateman Modular has provided some 14 Mega DMS modules over the last 7 years with the latest two orders from Debswana (Damtshaa double up project) and Namdeb. Ever since the first Mega Module was supplied Bateman Modular has been improving the Modules. Implementation The modules can be supplied in different configurations so as to improve the overall availability of the plant. Two off 150 tph DMS modules were supplied for a Transhex operation. This allowed the client to still operate one DMS module while maintenance is being performed on the other DMS module. The client also has the option of choosing a single module. Successes The following list of projects provides the base for the success of the Mega Modules.

A short review of the current practice and recent developments is followed by a description of a newly developed approach for the solution of the optimum ultimate pit limit problem. The new approach utilizes the network modeling of the problem for solution by maximum flow algorithm. The latest developments in the implementation of maximum flow algorithm present significant time and memory savings as compared to initial development due to Ford and Fulkerson. Results of a series of computational tests are presented to demonstrate how this approach performs as compared to the well-known Lerchs Grossman algorithm. It is also shown that the solution by the new method will automatically include several optimal solutions based on predetermined number of benches to be included in the analysis.

A new technique for reaming the holes has been tested. This technique is available for reaming a hole at its deep end creating an enlarged cavity that has helicoidal grooves oriented at less than 40 degrees to the hole axis. This technique increases bolt resistance by a factor 1.3-1.62; its bearing capacity by 3 times and enhances underground roadway stability. This technique is suitable for great depth (1000m and greater) and weak wet rocks.

An accelerated and coordinated program of coal research is believed by many to be a necessary step in assuring coal's proper position in the expanding energy market. The President's Advisory Committee on Energy Supplies and Resources Policy, for example, made the following recommendation: We recognize that coal is a great national asset and endorse a cooperative study to determine what research and development could be undertaken. The coal industry and both Federal and State Governments should participate in this study and its costs. Representatives of the coal industry have agreed that such a study should be initiated. Accordingly, Felix E. Wormser, Assistant Secretary - Mineral Resources, United States Department of the Interior, requested the Bureau of Mines and Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., to conduct a survey of current research on bituminous coal. In addition to this survey, studies were made to determine research projects that would be of value to the coal industry.

This paper presents a virtual prototype for the stress analysis of cable shovel components based on combination of flexible and rigid body approach. The general mechanical system of the cable shovel is modeled as a multi-body system with rigid and flexible bodies. The relevant theories applied for the dynamic model are described in terms of Lagrangian multi-body dynamics and finite element method. A virtual prototype of the cable shovel is built in the Automatic Dynamic Analysis Mechanical System (ADAMS) environment, which allows visualizing the motion of general mechanical system and analyzing the dynamic stress of structural components of the cable shovel. An example is given to perform dynamic stress of durability analysis for the boom and handle. Attention of this study is devoted to the mechanisms of damage of the cable shovel and also the critical high stress areas. The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) is a new system of tools providing an original approach in drill-stem testing. It improves control during the testing operation and gives a more accurate evaluation of the fluid recovered while providing additional pressure information for reservoir analysis. The tools are operated entirely by up and down motion of the drill stem. This up and down operation provides a positive means of control and offers easily observed surface indications of tool operating position. An unlimited number of shut-in and flow periods may be taken with this tool while in the hole. The key to the success of the MFE system of tools is the safety seal packer. Until this development, operation of the tools by up and down motion only had proven unreliable. The success ratio of the MFE now exceeds the ratio achieved by conventional tools. The equipment includes a 2,750-cc chamber in which a representative sample of the flowing formation fluid is trapped at the end of the last flow period and brought to the surface under pressure. The sample can be evaluated at the wellsite or transferred under pressure for laboratory analysis. The sampling feature of the tool allows a sample to be obtained from a reservoir which has suffered minimum influence from production. A representative sample can be obtained for laboratory or empirical analysis by employing a testing technique to minimize drawdown during flow periods. Interpretation methods to take advantage of this additional information are presented and supported by actual field examples. INTRODUCTlON The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) represents the most recent technical advance in formation testing. Drill-stem testing techniques prior to the MFE have been limited in three areas—(1) operaiion, (2) recovery analysis, and (3) reservoir analysis. The tools in the MFE system allow maximum control during testing and provide test information superior to that obtainable with conventional tools. A series of studies of emissions from large coal-fired steam generators have included measurements of the concentrations of oxides of sulfur and oxides of notrogen. The sampling equipment, method of sampling, and analytical techniques used for processing of these samples are detailed. A method based on the precipitation of benzidine sulfate was developed for determining both SO3 and total oxides of sulfur in the presence of interfering acidic components in the stack gases. In addition, difficulties encountered with sampling and analytical techniques are also described.

With the trend toward deeper and consequently hotter holes, measurements of drilling mud properties at atmospheric temperatures are becoming increasingly inadequate.' Both the prediction and control of down-hole mud properties depend in part upon our knowledge of temperatures in the wellbore. Consequently, a better understanding of factors that affect temperatures during circulation and trips could improve drilling operations. It was toward the goal of obtaining this understanding that this study was directed. Other investigators2 have studied the response of fluid temperature in the borehole during trips. However, all of these studies have used an assumed formation temperature profile at the conclusion of circulation and have provided no means to calculate this profile directly. In this study, the formation profile during circulation was calculated. Other investiga-tors3-5 have also studied bottom-hole temperature during circulation. However, they have developed neither general techniques for calculating the entire temperature profile in the system nor generalized methods for predicting bottom-hole fluid temperatures during circulation. Such techniques and methods have been developed and are discussed briefly in the following pages. Temperature Behavior During Circulation Circulation of fluid during the drilling operation is represented schematically in Fig. 1. The process of circulation has three distinct phases: (1) fluid enters the drill pipe at the surface and passes down the drill pipe; (2) fluid exits the drill pipe through the bit and enters the annulus at the bottom; and (3) fluid passes up the annulus and exits the annulus at the surface. To simulate the thermal behavior of the fluid in the system, each of the phases of circulation must be described mathematically. In Phase 1, the fluid enters the drill pipe at a specified temperature, TDo. As the fluid passes down the pipe, its temperature is determined by the rate of heat convection down the drill pipe, the rate of heat exchange between the drill pipe and the annulus, and time. Phase 2 of the circulating process merely requires that the fluid temperature at the exit of the drill pipe be the same as the fluid temperature at the entrance of the annulus; i.e., TD(L,t) = TA(L,l). Thus in Phase 3, the fluid enters the annulus at TD(L, t). As the fluid flows up the annulus, its temperature is determined by the rate of heat convection up the annulus, the rate of heat exchange between the annulus and the drill pipe, the rate of heat exchange between the formation adjacent to the annulus and the fluid in the annulus, and time. These rates of heat exchange and the time dependency of mud temperature are described by well known heat-flow equation.6 Consequently, as shown in the Appendix, the temperature profiles in the drill pipe, annulus, and formation can be obtained by solving Eqs. 1 through

Arrium (previously OneSteel) initiated a desktop study into the performance of its hematite ore beneficiation plant in early 2010. The beneficiation plant utilises jig concentrators and spirals to upgrade low-grade hematite recovered during mining at the Iron Duke (ID) mine site located 60 km south-west of Whyalla. The study, conducted in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, identified a number of opportunities for improvement, which were validated by a series of sampling campaigns and a pilot plant trial. One of the major recommendations was to upgrade the ultra-fines processing circuit from a single-stage spiral circuit to a three-stage circuit. The upgrade of the ultra-fines circuit was estimated to provide a significant increase in fines production and grade.In order to capitalise on the strong iron price at the time of the project, Arrium decided to utilise a fast-tracked approach to design, construct and commission the processing equipment required to achieve the improvements identified. This decision introduced the risk of missing critical steps in the project development process, which could have potentially resulted in major issues in latter stages of the project. In addition to the challenges introduced due to the expedited time line for project completion, this project presented unique challenges due to its brownfield nature. One such challenge faced was the integration of the new equipment and control system software.Furthermore, the importance of the ID ore beneficiation plant (OBP) contribution to the companyÆs export commitments meant the upgrade work had to occur while minimising disruption to normal operation. This decision presented a set of new challenges to an already complex project. One such challenge was the need to build and commission the new spiral circuit in isolation from the operating plant.The aim of this paper will be to highlight some of the challenges faced in a complex brownfield project such as the ID OBP upgrade and discuss how they were managed to enable the successful commissioning of the process in early 2012.CITATION:Selvapandian E and Barr, R, 2013. "The El Mochito Mine located in Honduras, Central America, has produced lead, zinc and silver in concentrates since the 1950s. The paper discusses changes made in both lead and zinc circuits to reduce costs while maintaining production during the recent period of low metal prices.The intent of this paper is to show that sometimes thinking “outside the box” is beneficial for progress. Also, in striving for better metallurgical results we should not forget the basics of flotation. Sometimes the latest trends may not be applicable to the ore we are treating and may not meet the operating cost constraints.A major beneficial impact on El Mochito metallurgy was achieved when the overall grind was coarsened, eliminating the significant percentage of slimes. Switching from two parallel twostage grinding circuits to one circuit with three-stage series grinding has resulted in a significant reduction in power and steel consumption. With minor layout/reagent modifications, both lead and zinc circuits gained not only in retention time but as well in producing better grade products.Of course, the challenges are still there; they exist and only with the full support of operational data collection and metallurgical laboratory investigation success can come. That is why, we as professionals, can never stop in trying to make the most of what we have.INTRODUCTIONThe El Mochito Mine is owned by American Pacific Honduras S.A. de C.V. (AMPAC) a subsidiary of Breakwater Resources Ltd. Of Toronto, Canada. The mine is located in western Honduras, approximately 220 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Tegucigalpa and 90 kilometers south of the country’s second largest city, San Pedro Sula. The mine began operating in 1948 and to date has produced more than 19 million tonnes grading 240 g/t Ag, 3.5% Pb and 7.4% Zn. Production in 2005 was 700,190 tonnes grading 87 g/t Ag, 1.85% Pb and 6.61% Zn.Decreasing metal content in the ore followed by the lowest zinc price on the market in the last 15 years (see Figure 1) has reduced the cash flow and endangered to stop the operation."

Same-batch and non-blind as well as blind pulp duplicates are often submitted as quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) control samples to a routine laboratory along with routine assays (and other control samples such as reference material samples). The current ways of interpreting the results of duplicate assays to derive QA/QC conclusions and decisions, however, has not yet been formalised in a scientific manner. The current, prevailing approach and its limitations are reviewed and a new method is proposed as a substitute tool. This new tool should allow for operational error detection on a batch per batch basis (ie batch rejection) as well as laboratory performance assessment with time on reproducibility.

This report describes the approach, procedures, and results of a program to develop training materials for roof bolter operators. The objective of the program was to design and produce a training sequence which would prepare roof bolter trainees for job performance. Data was collected and analyzed using the general procedures of Instructional Systems Development (ISD). Input data came from a previous roof bolter training analysis program. This data was expanded and structured through a series of ISD steps: objectives hierarchies, media selection, syllabus, lesson specifications, and train¬ing materials development. The resulting program consisted of an ordered sequence of 15 lessons. The media mix for the 15 lessons included lectures, slide-tape lessons, and hands-on instruction using operational roof bolters. Contents of all lessons were reviewed and approved by the Bureau. The key recommendations were to (1) validate the materials and measure relative effectiveness of media formats; (2) survey mines for training resources and conditions - match materials to user capabilities, rather than selection state of the art technology/media; (3) develop job performance aids (JPAs) rather than simulators; (4) create a style/media/JPA development guide for use in future projects of this kind.

"This paper charts, briefly, the :salient facts of international trade in minerals and their products and Canada's place in it. It also reviews inter-national agreements, economic groupings and national measures to channel and regulate production and trade in minerals. Canada's mineral industry now produces raw materials worth $3.7 billion per year, making this country a giant among mineral producers. Two-thirds of this production is exported, chiefly to the United States, accounting for about 30 per cent of Canada's merchandise exports and topping all other classes.However, several other nations are also pressing the development of their mineral resources and markets. The Soviet Bloc, China and principally Australia and Africa are becoming important suppliers of basic raw materials to some traditional markets of Canada in Europe and Japan.The outlook for Canadian mineral exports to the countries of the Common Market, Great Britain and Japan is good, although some tariff barriers remain troublesome.Concerning the United States, our most important market, Canada is seeking to have that country lift import quotas on lead and zinc, and re-cent statements by U.S. authorities give hope that this may be achieved soon. Moreover, Canada wishes to obtain easier access to the American market for several of its metals and minerals.Canada is now participating in the Kennedy Round of tariff talks under the auspices of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and is seeking to open wider doors for its exports of products.In summary, Canada has done reasonably well in some mineral commodities on world markets, but has lost ground in others. Any slackening of Canada's efforts in the development and marketing of mineral resources would soon lead to the decline of its role in the world miueral economy."

Como parte de la campaña de seguridad y prevención de accidentes producidos en las minas de San Antonio de Esquilache, el autor del presente texto expone una serie de medidas que permitan reducir el índice de siniestros producidos durante las labores tales como: golpes con herramientas, carroneo, explosivos, lesiones, caídas de piedras por chimeneas, de trozo y minerales en los buzones, etc. Para ello, resalta la creación de organizaciones dedicadas a prevenir dichos incidentes, así como la aplicación de un programa de seguridad que incluya el uso de cinturones de seguridad, acuñado de los techos y galerías mediante barretillas, limpieza de caminos y carretillas, supervisión contínua de los caminos de las minas, equipo de seguridad del trabajador, et. Por último, la permanente charla de capacitación del personal de seguridad, como la cooperación de los trabajadores durante este proceso, disminuye la cantidad de 4o accidentes mensuales a 2 desarrollados en los últimos meses en la mina.
