Processos metalúrgicos durante soldagem provocam tensões residuais em peças soldadas. Recentemente foi observado um efeito de redistribuição das tensões residuais de soldagem num período de até duas semanas após o termino do processo de soldagem. Existe hipótese nossa que esta redistribuição das tensões está associada a mudança na microestrutura que ocorre no material após do processo de soldagem. Para provar esta hipótese, uma simulação física dos ciclos térmicos do processo de soldagem foi realizada utilizando a simulação física termo-mecânica (GLEEBLE). Através da técnica de microscopia eletrônica de varredura associada a técnica de difração de elétrons retroespalhados (MEV–EBSD) foi observada a variação da misorientação dos grãos e mudanças na microestrutura do material nos primeiros dias após soldagem, acompanhada de redistribuição das tensões residuais.

What decision making tools and methods are available to a project owner when there is no clear differentiator between construction alternatives? A team led by a joint venture of Parsons Brinckerhoff and PGH Wong Engineering (PB/Wong) has been providing preliminary engineering services to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). The SFMTA and PB/Wong team developed several alternative construction methods for the tunnels and stations of the San Francisco Central Subway Project, none of which could be judged clearly better than another using traditional approaches and metrics. The team employed a risk assessment and analysis frame-works as a means of comparative analysis, drawing upon the knowledge of industry experts in the geotechnical, tunneling and construction fields to assist in the effort. This paper presents the approach and results of a cost and schedule risk analysis for two such analyses designed to answer two different questions regarding the advisability of different construction approaches. These assessments paved the way for key decision making in the preliminary engineering phase of the project and formed the foundation for continuing risk management efforts on the project. The focus of this paper is primarily the first two stages of risk management?identification and assessment?and some of the organizational dynamic issues that arise in such efforts.

"Selection of the optimum support system for underground openings such as tunnels is a complex process. In this paper a new approach, based on a combination of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and the Preference Ranking Organization METHod for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE), is introduced. For this purpose, the selection process is assumed to be a multi criteria decision-making problem. First different support systems using FLAC3D numerical code, based on technical safety and stability parameters of the tunnel are specified. Then taking economic and performance parameters as the decision criteria by using the combination of Al-IP, TOPSIS, and PROMETHEE the optimum support system is selected. As a real mine case study this approach is used in the main access entry to the C, coal scam of Tabas collieries. Results clearly demonstrate that the proposed support system selection method is more advantageous than other alternatives.INTROD CTIONGenerally, the support system for a tunnel is selected primarily with the aid of design engineers experience. In other words personal judgment instead of intellectual and scientific criteria is mostly the main basis (Oracc. 2005). However since various support systems can be applied in any particular situation, accurate selection of the optimum support method depends on the integration of many technical, economical and performance parameters, and also on the analysis of the intensity of influence by each of the criteria.In this paper an applicable approach for se lection of tunnel support systems based on Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM) techniques including: Al IP (Orace et al.. 2009a; Saaty, 1980), TOPSIS (Hwang and Yoon, 1981: Yoon and Hwang, 1995), and PROMETHEE (Brans and Vincke. 1985; Brans and Mareschal. 1992) is introduced. As a field study, this approach was applied to tunnel C1 as one of the main entries in the Tabas coal mine which is the major collieries in the central pan of Iran (Hosseini, 2008).Due to the coal seam conditions coal is mined by mechanized longwall mining (Hosseini 2008). This method requires the 58 excavation of several entries some of which will be used for many years and even for the entire life of the mine (Peng, 2006). Therefore the selection of the support system in these entries is·very important in mining design."

The Bureau of Mines is conducting studies of the slags related to ferrous technology to evaluate acceptable substitutes for the auxiliary flux, mineral fluorspar, in foundry operations. This work is directed toward the Bureau's goal of minimizing the Nation's dependence on scarce and critical minerals Comparative basic practice cupola (18-inch-ID) trials were made to evaluate a waste material called "used potlining," which contains significant levels of fluorine, sodium, and aluminum in various compounds. Used potlining is recovered from alumina reduction cells after its useful life, and was supplied by the Aluminum Co. of America (Alcoa) to the Bureau for evaluation. The material in the lump and pelletized form (with limestone) provided extremely fluid slags based on visual observation during cupola operation. No adverse effects were found on cupola performance, metal and slag chemistry, the environment, or mechanical properties of the castings produced. Fluorine recovery in the slag was equal to, or higher than, that of fluorspar; fluorine losses to the scrubber water and solids were lower. The acidity of the scrubber Hater was somewhat neutralized. No difference was observed in furnace-refractory attack, as determined by the level of magnesia in the slag and visual inspection. The recovery of sodium in the slag, presumably as the oxide, significantly increased slag fluidity, suggesting that less than equivalent fluorine may be required. There was no contamination of the gray iron by the aluminum from the used potlining. Used potlining was completely satisfactory as a substitute for fluorspar in cupola ironmelting.

Prolonged, extensive exposure to hand-transmitted vibration could cause a series of vibration-induced disorders in the vascular, sensorineural, and musculoskeletal structures of the human hand-arm system, which have been collectively called hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).1 To assess the risk of HAVS the international standard ISO 5349-1 (2001)1 recommends using the root-mean-square (rms) acceleration of the measured vibration with a frequency weighting. While a few epidemiological studies have reported results consistent with the predictions made according to the recommendation, many other studies have reported results with large discrepancies.2 This may be partially attributed to the time-averaging effect involved in calculation of the frequency components, especially for impact type tools. Because the spectral characteristics of impact tools change dramatically with time, a time-frequency (T-F) analysis can provide better characterizations of such highly transient vibrations. The analytic wavelet transform (AWT) is an ideal T-F analysis tool because it possesses the advantages of both the Fourier transform and the wavelet transform.3 The objective of this study was to explore the application of the AWT method for characterizing the impact tool vibrations and assessing their exposure risk. Methods Five tools (two chipping hammers, two riveting hammers, and one concrete cutting saw) were used in this study. The saw vibration was measured when it was used to cut a section of road pavement during a repair. The vibrations on the other tools were measured by the procedure specified in ISO 8662-2 (1992).4 A sampling rate of 16,386 Hz was used in the measurement. The AWT and Fourier analysis were applied to these signals and to identify their characteristics. Results Figure 1 compares the T-F characteristics of the accelerations measured from the relatively steady concrete saw and a riveting hammer. The frequency weighting specified in ISO 5349-11 was applied in the calculations. The comparison clearly shows that the two tools have completely different T-F characteristics.

El presente texto plantea una forma de tratamiento de lodos anódicos en la fundición de La Oroya a través de una individualización de los residuos de cobre y plomo, con la finalidad de recuperar los elementos valiosos. También, se analizan los resultados experimentales del esquema propuesto (tratamiento térmico-fusión-reducción) para los lodos anódicos de plomo, así como las ventajas que el nuevo diagrama de flujo aporta. Finalmente se plantean alternativas que procesen los residuos anódicos de cobre, complementando el esquema de los lodos nódicos de plomo, y se dan conclusiones técnico-económico del método innovador en relación al sistema actual.

ONE astounding fact in the production of petroleum is the comparatively recent realization by producers that flowing production is the cheapest crude produced. About 1910 or even later, operators actually endeavored to get a producing well to pumping as quickly as possible after completion. A well was not really considered to be completed until it was operating on the pump. Remarkable progress has been made since then. It was not until about 1920 that producers began to take a serious interest in pressures and to think a little about proper methods of handling oil wells. Pressure gauges were installed, and records of pressures maintained, which was quite an innovation. Desultory experiments were made with tubing of different sizes, as well as experiments with placing the bottom of the tubing string at different levels in the well. CHARACTER OF THE WORK IN HAND IN planning the present experiments, we have made a particular effort to secure that adjustment of working conditions which would render the forthcoming tests most serviceable by way of indicating the comparative properties of the three different commercial grades of copper used. More specifically, we have endeavored to obtain certain definite information with respect to the relative behavior under test of ordinary electrolytic copper and furnace-refined lake copper containing (a) a moderate percentage of arsenic and (b) a rather large percentage of arsenic, in addition to the usual content of silver and other impurities. These comparisons were made systematic and comprehensive by testing throughout a series of (eight) reductions running from 0 to 70 per cent. in the case of cold-rolled metal, and throughout a series of (15) temperatures running from 100° C. to 1,000° C. in the case of annealed metal. In other words, a survey of properties similar to that made by Grard,1 in the case of electrolytic copper, was here repeated (with modifications) and extended to two other commercial varieties of copper.

Uranium deposits in the Spokane Indian Reservation, as well as those around Mt. Spokane, are essentially low grade, much of the ore containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8. The Mining Experiment Station of the Division of Industrial Research, State College of Washington, has been engaged in intensive research on the amenability of these low grade ores to froth flotation. The results: successful flotation of autinite, chief mineral constituent. At the outset of this work the goal was a concentrate of 1 pct U3O8 with a 90 pct recovery from ores containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8. Most of the work has been done on argillite ore from the Midnight mine on the Spokane Indian Reservation. The goal has not been attained using this ore, but samples of the granite ore from Mt. Spokane yielded successful results. For example, a concentrate containing 11.2 pcl U3O8 was produced from a Mt. Spokane high grade ore containing 1.27 pct U3O8 with a recovery of 97.8 pct. Another Mt. Spokane ore yielded a concentrate of 5.0 pct U3O8 from an ore containing 0.13 pct U3O8. with a recovery of 85 pct. This same ore gave a recovery of 93.5 pct when the grade of concentrate was reduced to 2.0 pct. It has been concluded that a successful method for floating autunite has been developed and that the mediocre results from the Midnight argillite ore are probably caused by the presence of some other uranium mineral or minerals less amenable to these reagents. The experimenters tested a third type of Washington ore, found on the Northwest Uranium Mines Inc. property on the Spokane Indian Reservation. This is a conglomerate of pebbles and small boulders of partially decomposed granite and is shot through with autunite. Its characteristics lie between those of the Midnight ore and the granite ore from the Spokane district. It responds better than the ore from Midnight but not as well as that from Mt. Spokane. As the fatty acids are the only type of collectors showing promise, investigation has been concerned with these acids and the optimum conditions for their use. The first method for treating the argillite ore from the Spokane Indian Reservation made use of Cyanamid's R-708 as a collector, a tall oil product described as a substitute for oleic acid. Although the investigators proved that R-708 is a collector for autunite when mixtures of autunite and silica sand are used, results on the ore were mediocre. Tests of other fatty acids revealed that the solid fatty acids of the saturated series are collectors for autunite and that their collecting power increases with the length of the carbon chain. The even carbon members of the whole series were tested from the 10 carbon acid (capric) to the 22 carbon acid (be-henic). The least expensive collector, stearic acid (18 carbon), proved to be a good one, so this was used in most of the tests. In first attempts with stearic acid, the collector was dissolved in various hydrocarbons and the solutions were added to the flotation cell. Cyclohexane, gasoline, fuel oil, kerosene, and other solvents were tried. Small amounts of high grade concentrates could be brought up, but recoveries were low. Finally emulsions of stearic acid were tried. It was discovered that stearic acid alone has little collecting power except when conditioning is carried out at high temperature. When hydrocarbon solvents were also present, it proved to be an excellent collector. An example of one emulsion that proved satisfactory for some ores is given as follows: 1 part stearic acid by weight, 1 part sodium oleate by weight, 1.2 parts kerosene by weight, 100 parts water. In some successful tests part of the stearic acid was replaced by oleic acid. The emulsions were made by agitating the stearic acid and sodium oleate together with hot water, then adding the kerosene and agitating while cooling. In the five tests reported in Table 1, 650 g of ore were ground with 650 cc water in a laboratory rod mill. The pulp was filtered to eliminate excess water and the ground ore transferred to a stainless steel beaker for conditioning at high pulp density. In most of the tests sodium hydroxide was added to the conditioner during agitation, then the collector emulsion, and finally the sodium silicate. The amount of alkali was adjusted to give a pH of 8.5 to 9.0 in the flotation cell. After conditioning the pulp was transferred to a laboratory flotation cell and the test completed in a normal manner. It is interesting to note that a deposit of high grade concentrate forms on the conditioning agitator and in the conditioning vessel, and at times on the agitator of the flotation cell itself. A few grams of concentrate running as high as 4 pct U3O8 were recovered from the conditioner when Midnight ore containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8 was treated. Mineral resource development activities impact the health and well-being of many people, from workers, to families and surrounding communities. In the decade up to 2010, mining revenues increased from 6% to 14% of Australian GDP, and minerals contributed 55% of total exports, with a growth in mining employment from 1% to 1.7% of the national workforce (Connolly and Orsmund, 2011). The growth in Australia?s minerals operations is mostly located in remote areas, or in rural communities with a limited population. As a result, operations have increasingly implemented long distance commuting (LDC) programs, often called ?fly-in, fly-out? (FIFO) and ?drive-in, drive-out? (DIDO), as a staffing strategy to meet rapid industry growth in locations with limited local populations. The rapid expansion of the minerals industry has resulted in considerable public debate about the benefits and costs to all sectors of Australian society. In response to the concerns of constituencies from many parts of Australia, the Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government, The Hon Simon Crean MP, asked the House Standing Committee on Regional Australia on Tuesday 23 August 2011 to inquire into and report on the use of ?fly-in, fly-out? (FIFO) and ?drive-in, drive-out? (DIDO) workforce practices in Regional Australia. The recently published report highlights the national interest and the diverse opinions about this practice in Australia. Resource extraction companies have developed several options to meet the accommodation requirements of their long distance commuting workforce. In this paper, initial results are reported from an ongoing survey of FIFO (and other non-residential) resource industry workers (n = 286) in the Australian resource extraction industries. The purpose of this study was to better understand how accommodation arrangements may impact on the health, wellbeing and job satisfaction of non-resident workers; and to attempt to find a relationship between different accommodation variables and workforce wellbeing and retention. In doing this it investigates evidence for the linkage between accommodation factors, hours of work, health, well-being, job satisfaction and job retention in the LDC work force.

"The collection efficiency of dust particles was determined in a laboratory dust chamber equipped with a water spray. Measurements were made in the presence of selected nonionic, cationic and anionic surfactants. For the nonionic and the anionic reagents, efficiency was maximum in a narrow range of concentration. The surfactant concentration corresponding to high collection efficiency was usually much below the commonly used concentration of l "", however. In comparison, much higher collection efficiency was observed for a cationic surfactant at extremely low concentrations. For delineating the mechanism of capture of dust particles, surface tension and contact angle results were used to obtain a correlation between the work of adhesion and the efficiency of collection. Such a correlation was reasonable for the nonionic surfactants but not for charged surfactants. In the latter case, electrostatic interactions between charged droplets and particles were more important, especially for the cationic reagent. INTRODUCTIONSeveral methods are used to control dust in mines. These include: ventilation, foam, scrubbers and sprays. This article is concerned with improving the effectiveness of water sprays, which are widely used to remove dust particles during continuous mining, by adding small quantities of surfactants. Water sprays produce small droplets which act as collectors of dust particles suspended in air. Sprays directed at the actual source of dust have the additional property of wetting the coal before the ·particles become airborne (Hamilton, 1974). Wetting agents, also called surfactants, arc known to play an important role in many applications where dust is a problem. However, conflicting reports exist in the literature with regard to the effectiveness of surfactants in water sprays (for a review, see Chander et al., 1988). In spite of the conflicting reports, the use of surfactants for dust control has increased over the years. In a recent study by the Bureau of Mines, a 27'6 reduction in respirable dust levels was observed in a mine test when surfactants were added to sprays (Foley, 1991)."

Tailings management plays an important role in reducing the environmental impact of Orano Canada’s uranium mining operations in Northern Saskatchewan. Uranium ores mined from Northern Saskatchewan are often associated with large amounts (10-20 wt%) of other harmful elements, such as arsenic and nickel. The JEB Tailings Management Facility (TMF) located at McClean Lake, Saskatchewan is designed to prevent potentially harmful water-soluble elements, particularly arsenic, from contaminating the surrounding environment by promoting the formation of water-insoluble minerals. It is therefore important to determine which arsenic-containing mineral species are present in the TMF and how they evolve over time. Researchers at the Canadian Light Source (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) were successful in identifying the arsenic mineral species present in tailings samples collected from the TMF in 2013 using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. XANES analysis verified that the majority of arsenic species in the TMF existed as amorphous and crystalline ferric arsenates with minor amounts of arsenite and arsenide species. Herein, XANES is again used to analyze a new set of tailings samples collected from the TMF in 2018, specifically focusing on the difference in the distribution of arsenic species in old and new tailings.

The stability of slopes is a crucial problem not only in open pit mines, but also in civil engineering situations. The deformational behaviour of slopes is in general monitored during/after the excavation by carrying out field measurements where displacement measurements are commonly adopted. In monitoring the slope stability it should be emphasized that the measurement results must be properly interpreted so as to assess whether the slopes are stable or become unstable in the future. In order to interpret the data, back analysis is extremely useful. In this paper a slope stability monitoring system is described. It consists of displacement measurements by GPS, and a back analysis of measured data. The use of GPS has a great advantage, because of the fact that continuous displacement measurements with high accuracy for a large extent of concerned area can be easily achieved. On the other hand, the back analysis can reveal the mechanical characteristics of the ground, which make it possible to assess the stability of slopes quantitatively.

This report, dealing with the separation of coal from its associated impurities by means of a pulsater-type jig, continues the series of reports that have been issued by the Bureau of Mines, in which detailed study has been made of the efficiency and mechanism of separating coal and impurities in various coal-cleaning appliances. The previous reports have dealt with the piston jig, coal-washing table, pneumatic table, and Baum-type jig. Such studies of the separation accomplished by any form of concentration device are essential and necessarily preliminary to any intelligent attempt to improve the performance of such equipment Object and Plan The pulsator-type jig was developed recently by G. A. Vissac. Although two articles(2) describing plants using this typo of cleaning unit appeared in 1936, both dealt principally with plant design and layout rather than with plant performance The object of the stork described in this report was to determine the efficiency of the separation made by the pulsator jig on a sized feed, the specific gravity at which the separation between coal and impurity was effected, and the influence of the specific-gravity composition of the coal on the character of the separation made.

The Bureau of Mines, Department of Interior, has been investigating the use of polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant for a variety of mineral wastes. As part of this investigation, the hydrodynamics of the flocculation process were studied. It was determined that to obtain optimum dewatering results, the factors of energy input into the stirrer, polymer concentration, and polymer dosage must be considered. Lt was found that at a given polymer concentration, there was an optimum stirrer speed and polymer dosage. With excess PEO, the amount of water removed in the trommel decreased, but no evidence for steric stabilization was observed.
