"This work has as its objective to characterize an ash waste and to evaluate its incorporation into a clay to produce bricks and roofing tiles. The waste is a type of fly-ash resulting from the incineration of a selected part of urban garbage, which is basically constituted of organic matter and plastics. The waste was submitted to mineralogical and chemical characterization. Compositions were prepared with incorporation of the waste in amounts of up to 20wt.% into athe clay. Rectangular specimens were prepared by extrusion and fired in a laboratory furnace at 900°C. The physical and mechanical properties evaluated were: linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength. The results showed that the waste is predominantly composed of quartz and calcium compounds. The incorporation of the ash was deleterious to the evaluated properties of the clay. It is suggested that the incorporation should be made in amounts below 5wt. % to avoid deleterious effect in the mechanical strength and water absorption of the clayey ceramic.IntroductionThe world attention has turned to a subject of great concern today, the production and disposal of large amounts of industrial wastes as well as wastes of various sources. When deposed in an unsuitable place, these wastes can cause considerable harm to human health and to the environment. Our planet suffers with air pollution, groundwater and soil contamination as well as silting of rivers and lakes with the growing amounts of our society wastes.The recycling of waste materials is of great interest to the industries, mainly due to the environmental agencies legislation. One of the practices for correct disposal of these wastes being investigated is to incorporate into red ceramics, such as bricks and roofing tiles. The natural variability of the characteristics of the clays associated with the relatively simple processing techniques and also the low performance required for the products allow the presence of relatively high levels of impurities in clayey ceramics."

The United States Bureau of Reclamation is constructing the $200 million Navajo Indian Irrigation Project to irrigate 110,000 acres of land on the Navajo Indian Reservation in northwestern New Mexico. Water from the San Juan River is impounded by Navajo Dam and will be conducted for 26 miles along a series of tunnels and canals to the area to be irrigated. Tunnel No. 3 is the third in a series of six tunnels along the route. Bids for construction of Tunnel No. 3 were received by the Bureau of Reclamation in September, 1970. Fluor Utah was low bidder at $8.7 million. Ten of the 12 bids were based on excavation by tunnel boring machine. The consulting firm of A. A. Mathews, Inc., was retained by the contractor to advise on geologic and rock mechanics conditions after support problems developed in the tunnel. Tunnel No. 3 is 15,264 feet long, has an 18 foot lined diameter, rises approximately one-half inch per 100 feet in the direction being excavated, and is 6,000 feet above sea level. There is one short curve in the alignment. Minimum concrete thickness is 12 inches with eight inches from 'A' to 'B' line making a pay diameter of 21 feet, 4 inches. The tunnel is supported with rock bolts and steel pans. Mole excavation began on May 13, 1971 from a blasted starting chamber. After 46 feet were excavated the mole was shut down and the trailing muck handling equipment was pulled into place. After advancing 1,700 feet in 34 days, unanticipated ground water conditions and ground support problems were encountered slowing moling so that the next 1,000 feet of advance consumed 97 days until December

Clearly a plant designed only to treat average ore at the nameplate rate will fail to achieve nameplate in any typical year. To insert the necessary capability to achieve nameplate it is common process engineering design practice that plant must be able to treat an ore with 80th percentile value (hardness or competence values for example) at the nameplate rate. In the authorÆs experience, apart from a couple of notable cases, this has been applied reasonably well as a principal, and with widespread success. However, in a number of recent instances it became clear that the use of the 80th percentile number would have resulted in significant under design of the plant. This paper makes the case that the 80th percentile, as a principal, has can have serious flaws and its use needs to be assessed on a case by case basis. The discussion in this paper is the first step in developing a new design principal, and the associated methodology for selection of a design value, that will ensure plants are designed to achieve their nameplate capacities.CITATION:David, D, 2013. In this present research, a polymer poly (acrylamide-allyl thiourea) (PAM-ATU) with an average molecular weight 1.66 × 104 g/mol was used as a depressant in the flotation separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite and galena. The micro-flotation experimental results showed that PAM-ATU exhibited a strong influence on the flotation performances of chalcopyrite and galena, but had little effect on that of molybdenite within a pH range of 9.0~11.0 at a dosage of lower than 6.0 mg/L. The flotation results of bulk flotation tests illustrated that PAM-ATU showed a stronger depression power than sodium thioglycollate (TGA) and sodium sulfide. The comparison results demonstrated that PAM-ATU and TGA had an advantage in reducing galena and chalcopyrite impurities in the molybdenum concentrate, respectively. With the combination of PAM-ATU and TGA, a good flotation separation result was achieved through one roughing operation where the recovery of molybdenum in the froth product was over 75.0%, while the recovery of copper and lead were less than 22.0% and 15.0%, individually. It was also found that a molybdenum concentrate with Mo grade of 46.32%, Cu grade of 0.16%, Pb grade of 0.06%, was obtained by a closed circuit flotation flowsheet of one roughing-three scavenging-five cleaning with a Mo recovery of 77.67%. Pyrite depression with prolonged pre-conditioning treatment in high salinity water has attracted much of researchers’ interest in recent years considering the increased utilisation of multiple stage flotation, closed water circuits, clay minerals, and sea water in flotation plants. In this study, the role of calcium (Ca)/magnesium (Mg) precipitates in stabilising the dissociative ferric hydroxy-xanthate (FHX), and its effect on modifying the balance of hydrophobic/hydrophilic species on the pyrite surface were primarily investigated. The total amount of extractable Fe-bearing species on pyrite concentrates and tailings after floatability test was quantitively determined using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) extraction tests combined with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). A more evident accumulation of extracted-Fe in pyrite concentrates rather than it in pyrite tailings was observed at both pH 9 and 10.5 when pyrite was pre-conditioned in Ca/Mg-bearing solutions for 360 min. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed the main xanthate derivatives changed from di-xanthogen (1155 cm-1 ) to FHX (1167 cm-1 ) on the oxidised pyrite samples that were preconditioned in Ca/Mg-bearing solutions. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) suggested the preferential accumulation of FHX upon secondary Ca/Mg-bearing precipitates as reflected by the higher Fe/S ratio together with the decrease of O element herein after xanthate conditioning. Although the hydrophilic secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals on the pyrite surface generally deteriorate pyrite’s floatability, the upper section of these secondary hydrophilic aggregates is partially covered by FHX alongside with further multilayer-adsorbed di-xanthogen. The precipitated Ca/Mg-bearing precipitates promotes the immobilisation of dissociated FHX derived from the reaction among iron oxyhydroxides and xanthate anions upon the localised secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals via acid–base complexation. Therefore, this phenomenon alleviates the hydrophilic modification of secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals to pyrite considering the immobilised FHX upon localised precipitates shows a slight hydrophobicity, and meanwhile, the upper FHX benefits the multilayer adsorption of di-xanthogen via the interaction among their inner hydrophobic alkyl chains.

"Ore outcrops were first discovered in the area in 1911. Following various periods of exploration by private interests and Cominco Limited, the Coast Copper Company, Limited property was brought into production in August 1962. Subsequently, Cominco explored the adjacent Quatsino Gold Mines property and is currently developing, and producing from, what is now known as the Benson Lake Mine.The Benson Lake Mine was developed using a conveyor-equipped decline and trackless LHD equipment. The operation produces 800 tons per day of copper-iron ore, copper being the main product. Copper and iron concentrates are trucked 25 miles to storage and shiploading facilities near Port McNeill to await shipment to Japan."

The classical metal-slag-gas equilibrium technique was used to study the thermodynamic activity of cobalt, iron and their oxides in iron silicate based slags containing under controlled oxygen potential (3.70 x 10-8 to 2.95 x 10-7 atm) at 1573 K. The measured activity of cobalt oxide in FeOx-25 wt per cent SiO2 slags showed positive deviation from ideal behaviour for melts with up to ten wt per cent CoO. At higher silica contents, the behaviour became closer to ideal and in accord with previous studies on silica saturated slags. The activity coefficient of FeO in these slags had virtually no dependence on the CoO content. Partial substitution of silica by lime resulted in an increase of the activities and activity coefficients of CoO, FeO, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. The results indicate that saturation of the slag with a magnetite phase occurs at CaO contents of five wt per cent and higher. Phase equilibria studies SiO2-FeO-Fe2O3-CaO slags containing cobalt were also carried out using the drop-quench technique. Results from these experiments confirmed the formation of a magnetite solid solution containing about three wt per cent CoO at lime contents of five wt per cent and higher at 1573 K and 2.9 x 10-7 atm of oxygen.

A hydrometallurgical process is described for the recovery of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates. The process is based on a cupric chloride leach, the concentrate having first been "activated" by heating it with sulphur at a temperature near 400°C. This activation process converts most of the iron of the chalcopyrite to pyrite, which is insoluble in the cupric chloride leachant. The copper is converted to the mineral idaite, which dissolves readily in hot cupric chloride: at 106°C, 98% of the copper is extracted in a three-stage countercurrent leach, the leaching tirqe being 1 hour per stage. The sulphur of the chalcopyrite appears as elemental sulphur, which is recycled for the activation of further concentrate, the final leach residue consisting of pyrite, plus the gangue present in the original concentrate. The copper extracted can be recovered by electrowinning, using a diaphragm cell. Current efficiency (one-electron basis) is about 70% but the cell voltage is only about 1 V, so that power consumption is three times lower than for the conventional sulphate electrowinning process. The leachant is simultaneously regenerated in the anode compartment. The behaviour of minor elements in the concentrate has also been studied.

During investigations of the treatment methods for ore from the Bird-in-Hand gold mine carried out at Kalgoorlie and at these laboratories, it was found that excess alkali caused a lowering of extraction by cyanide, the cause of this being attrIbuted to the presence of a small amount of oxidised lead compounds in the ore. The subject has been discussed by various writers,3 but no satisfactory explanation of existing facts has been put forward. The Lower Concourse C Extension (LCE) 108-in Storm Sewer consists of a 2,797-foot long, 27 to 55-foot deep, 108-in I.D. storm sewer tunnel. Situated beneath active taxiways and a terminal apron at Hare International Airport (D), the tunnel diverts ows from existing storm sewers located within the footprint of a future satellite concourse. The project was delivered via Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) as part of Chicago Department of Aviation’s (CDA) ongoing O’Hare 21 Capital Program. This paper presents project details, multiple stakeholder coordination, subsurface risks and challenges, TBM performance, and impacts to existing infrastructure.

"Finance Minister Donald Macdonald's budget of May 25, 1976 featured a restructuring of the anti-inflation profit controls and a grab bag of tax changes, some of direct interest to the mining industry. All Canadian taxpayers now will be permitted to write off immediately 100% of mineral and oil and gas exploration expenses included after• May 25, 1976 and before July 1 1979. The cost of acquitting Canadian resource property after May 6, 197.4 from a federal or provincial government will now clearly be included in Canadian development expense, and provincial drilling and exploration incentives received after May 25, 1976 will not reduce exploration and development expense for federal income tax purposes. Under tough new anti-inflation profit controls, all controlled businesses, except distributions, will essentially have one uniform set of rules for• determining allowable profit margins; this allowable margin will be determined by product line or by over-all net margin and will be 85% of the higher of the margin obtained in the five years preceding October• 13, 1975 or the one year preceding May 1, 1976. The basic capital cost allowance system is to continue, but many rates will be revised. The ability to offset losses created through claiming capital cost allowances on leased equipment, etc. against other income will be ended with respect to transactions entered into a/te1• budget night. Miscellaneous other tax changes will raise the low rate base for Canadian-controlled private corporations to $750,000 increase retitement plan contribution limits and reduce the rate of branch tax imposed on branches of corporations resident in a country with which Canada has a comprehensive tax treaty to equal the withholding tax rate on dividends under that treaty."

In the study of the properties of rutile pigments it became apparent several years ago that certain physical and optical properties could not be determined on particles of pigmentary size. Since reflected light is the dominant type which reaches the eye from small particles, the true color of pure rutile was not known. Most rutile pigments are acicular in habit, elongated parallel to the "c" axis. It was considered important to know the nature and tone of light transmitted, for example, by a basal plate. Further, as shown by spectrophotometric curves, there is a very strong absorption of light of 4000 k as measured on particles with random orientation. It would be interesting to see whether this absorption position varied with predetermined and selected orientations. Also, since the behavior of titanium pigments in a vehicle is important, a knowledge of the surface wettability of single crystals by various media should prove very fruitful. Finally, the optical properties of rutile are such that it should show, in a single pure crystal, greater fire and brilliance than the diamond. Mineralogists had long speculated that this would be the case and curiosity was strong to produce a single crystal large enough to cut.

Exxaro installed their first ultra fines treatment plant at Leeuwpan Coal mine. The plant is now fully operational and results already show that the plant has great potential. The plant was designed and installed by DRA. Several challenges were faced during the installation due to the space constraints in the Leeuwpan plant. Efficiency tests were conducted on both modules after commissioning and showed very promising results. A lower ash product with a higher yield can be produced with the fine coal dense medium cyclones compared to the spirals previously employed.

"Remediation for Perris Dam has been proposed in response to deficiencies identified in a seismic stability study prepared by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) in 2005. Lenses of potentially liquefiable soil have been identified within the dam foundation which may lose strength during a seismic event. The remediation was designed primarily to limit deformation of the dam. Nineteen construction methods were compared and evaluated for the remediation. The final decision was to use cement deep soil mixing (CDSM) to strengthen the foundation and to construct a downstream berm to stabilize the dam. The entire CDSM treatment will cover over 4,000 linear feet of the downstream toe of the dam. Over 300,000 cubic yards of CDSM will be used to strengthen the foundation. The construction of the project started in Fall 2014 and is anticipated to take approximately 3 years. This paper describes the design aspects of using CDSM to treat the foundation, including laboratory testing, investigation of overstressing/cracking, extent of treatment, effect of CDSM on pore pressures under the dam, and the results of a full-scale CDSM test section.INTRODUCTIONPerris Dam is a zoned earthfill dam with a length of 2.2 miles, a maximum height of 128 feet, and a capacity of 131,450 acre-ft of water. The dam is located in Riverside County, California at the terminus of the East Branch of the State Water Project. The embankment was constructed between 1971 and 1973 over an alluvial deposit between the Bernasconi Hills to the South and Russell Mountains to the North. A rock outcrop divides the dam into left and right reaches when viewed from the reservoir looking downstream. The embankment soil was obtained from a borrow source at the North end of the reservoir. The dam has a sloping sandy clay core (Zone 1) with a 10-foot deep cutoff trench and a silty sand shell (Zone 2) with a downstream chimney and blanket drain (Zone 3 and Zone 4) as shown in Figure 1."

Two molten salt systems were evaluated as electrolytes for the repetitive recovery of tungsten from tungsten oxide (W03) made by calcining commercial-grade ammonium paratungstate. Using a sodium chloride-sodium fluoride-potassium aluminum tetrafluoride electrolyte at 800° C, 1 pound of 99.8 percent tungsten was recovered for each 2.7 kilowatt-hours of energy consumed. The metal contained 1,100 ppm carbon, was in dendritic masses of spherical grains, and had an apparent bulk density of 5.41 g/cm3. T ngsten of 99.9 percent purity was won from a sodium pyrophosphate-sodium tetraborate-sodium chloride electrolyte at 1,000° C; 6.0 kilowatt-hours of energy was consumed for each pound of metal recovered. The metal contained 120 ppm carbon, was in dendritic masses of hexagonal acicular crystals, and had an apparent bulk density of 7.25 g/cm . Each metallic impurity--aluminum, calcium, copper, iron, nickel, and silicon--in the two tungsten products was 16 ppm or less.

This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West . Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977 that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.

To improve recoveries of Ni, Cu and Co in the Inco flash furnace, a new operating concept was investigated. By adding sufficient coke to form a supernatant coke layer, a reducing barrier would form allowing for improved reduction of descending oxidized sulfide mineral particles formed in the flame. The objective of this investigation was to study the kinetic mechanism and efficiency of the coke layer to produce a sulfur deficient matte. The mechanism and rate of carbon reduction of each of the phases formed in the flash flame, i.e. sulfides and oxysulfides were investigated by means of X-ray visualization tests. Graphite-slag reduction was also conducted for comparison purposes. In the case of slag, poor wettability and the formation of a gas film on the surface of the carbon reductant are often blamed for limiting the reaction surface area that ultimately results in poor reaction kinetics. The X-ray visualization tests confirmed that matte and oxysulfide wet coke better than slag and that the rates of reduction of matte and oxysulfide are faster than that of slag.

Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses owing to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rock fall hazard. Rock falls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings has an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orienting the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and off-setting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

The development of transportation systems for mined materials has historically been characterized by steadily increasing sizes in basic hauling units. This is especially true for open pit mines for which success is dependent upon the economical transportation of vast quantities of material. The depletion of high grade ore reserves has mandated a tremendous increase in the size and complexity of the ore haulage systems necessary for open pit mines, These increased demands were served by rail haulage systems in the early large open pit copper mines while later developed properties opted for the flexibility and lower initial costs of truck haulage. Now, we find the trucks being displaced as large overland belt conveyors tackle the problem of handling these ever larger quantities of low-grade ores with accompanying overburden ratios that can run as high as 10:1 or even 15:1. The basic development of large conveyors with shiftable sections and modular belts has generally taken place overseas, during the last few decades. The coal fields of central Europe proved an ideal testing ground for conveyor innovation because the low density and natural friability of the material created an ideal medium for transporting by belt conveyor. Now these proven ideas are being considered for and implemented into both the soft and hard rock mining industries of the United States.
