Pluor Utah has been closely associated with the engineering and construction of earth bottom thickeners for porphyry copper operations, for the counter-current decantation circuit of a gold cyanide plant and similar applications in mineral processing. During the past 13 years, some 18 of these thickeners have entered service and the bottoms have proved to be watertight structures with no particular problems encountered. In the course of this work, technological advances have been realized in the procedures for engineering and construction of these units to assure watertight basins and achieve all possible economies in construction. This paper describes the successful application of engineering and construction techniques for a number of these thickeners.

There has been a longstanding acceptance that burden plays a major role in the magnitude of ground vibration amplitudes generated from surface blasting. Much of the data that this belief is based upon is empirical in nature and may or may not represent an example of false inference. Recent published reports have rightly questioned the influence of burden and confinement on blast vibration amplitude, suggesting that the fracture condition of the rock mass is a better indicator. The increased investment in electronic detonators as a tool to control ground vibration amplitudes demands an understanding of vibration production detailed enough to make use of the vastly improved timing accuracy that they provide. A more accurate relationship may be found if we strip away the assumptions of the past and search for the underlying mechanism of vibration production in surface blasting. We must answer the question: What happens at or near the borehole when an explosive charge detonates that produces ground vibrations?

In all known deep mixing processes the existing soil is mixed with self hardening slurry by mixing tools that rotate about a vertical axis (augers, mixing paddles). Wall panels are constructed using sets of multiple mixing tools combined into a single unit. These techniques have been developed on the principle of the rotary drilling technology. In contrast, the new Cutter Soil Mixing or CSM technique is derived from the cutter technology. The soil is loosened and broken down by cutter wheels, then mixed in-situ by the rotating cutter wheels with the self-hardening slurry - introduced into the ground between the two wheels - to form a soil-slurry mortar. The main area of application lies in the construction of cut-off and retaining walls.

"Ribbon-growth-on-substrate is a casting method, which offers a possibility to control heat flow, nucleation and subsequent crystal growth at the liquid-substrate interface. This technology allows for low-cost and high throughput shaping of silicon sheets with controlled crystal grain size and orientation for use in solar cells. In this work, sheets of silicon- metal silicide composite materials were produced and their microstructure was studied. It was shown that depending on the relevant phase diagram and casting conditions, a micro/nano-sized eutectic structure of the casted sheet can be formed. Such composite materials possess properties promising for various applications in energy generation, storage and conservation. The advantages, potential and challenges of the ribbon-growth-on-substrate technique for production of composite sheet materials as well as novel areas of application for such materials are discussed.IntroductionThe Ribbon Growth on Substrates (RGS) process is well known in the solar industry as a process to produce multicrystalline silicon wafers. An industrial size pilot production line for continuous casting of silicon wafer was developed by RGS Development B.V. in the Netherlands (Figure 1). A comprehensive review of this technology and properties of the produced silicon wafers were reported by Schönecker et al [1]. The principle of the RGS process is explained in Figure 2. The relatively cold substrate extracts the crystallization heat from the liquid silicon in the casting frame. This results in the growth of a silicon ribbon (Vc) in contact with the substrate. When the substrate (Vp) is transported from the casting zone into the cooling section, the crystal growth stops, the wafer can be removed and the substrate can be re-used. Last few years large work was done on the industrialization and market development of RGS wafers for the solar industry. Part of this work was discussed by Schönecker et al [2]. Although there is still a good perspective on the middle and long term solar market for the RGS wafers, the current market situation was found to be unfavorable for new entrants."

Extensive testing in the past ten years has shown that where a uniform natural gamma background is present in the strata bordering the seam, the thickness of the boundary coal left in place after mining can be determined by measuring the attenuation of that radiation (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989). Measurements made by the authors in underground mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky, and by others in Wyoming and New Mexico, have shown the presence of such a gamma background (Nelson, 1989). Natural gamma coal thickness sensors of several configurations have been tested in mines owned and operated by the Consolidation Coal Company in Pennsylvania and west Virginia (Nelson and Bessinger, 1988).

This paper will focus on the background and rationalef or the formation of this partnership, the resulting operating changes and the productivity and cost benefits expected.IntroductionSince the deterioration of the world copper industry in 1981, the future of the Lomex and Cominco mines in the Highland Valley of British Columbia looked increasingly precarious. Despite the expansion of the Lomex mill complex in 1981 to one of the world's most cost-efficient copper and molybdenum concentrators, persistent low metal prices had made the remainder of the ore in the Lomex orebody marginally economic and had significantly foreshortened the expected life of the operation.Cominco had acquired the Bethlehem Copper assets in order to consolidate its ownership of the Valley orebody, and was feeding the Bethlehem concentrator with ore from the Valley orebody. In spite of the high grade and free-milling character of the Valley ore, profitability of the Cominco operation was severely restricted because of the limited capacity of the Bethlehem concentrator and its location high on the hillside above the orebody."

The potash mine and refinery of AMAX Chemical Corporation is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad on the north end of the potash producing areas. This property was developed between 1949-1952 and production of muriate began in August 1952. Two shafts, located 400 feet apart, were sunk to the ore zone 900 feet below the surface. A 15-foot diameter ore hoisting shaft equipped with a 1000-ton ore pocket, crusher and automatic skip loading equipment plus a 20-foot diameter service shaft with a curtain wall for exhausting air were provided. Sylvinite production to date has been from the first ore zone, stratigraphically, the lowest of ten identified mineralized zones in the salt section. This first ore zone has been the top producer of Muriate of Potash over the years. In our area we do have some very marginal mineralization in the third ore zone some 35 feet above the first. We have not mined from this seam as yet but we are investigating the economics very closely with access slopes and an experimental mining panel. Our ore seam is generally flat lying but does have local gentle rolling with grades from 2% to 5%. The mine was designed and developed from the beginning with conventional mining practices and rail haulage from the mining section to the ore pocket. As mining progressed in the early years, production increased from less than one million tons annually to a maximum of 3,935,000 tons in 1964. Efficiency also kept pace with the increasing production and continually improved until the efficiency of the production crews reached an average of 100.3 tons per manshift in 1964.

The Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with phosphate companies in the Florida land-pebble area, made a comprehensive study of the waste clays, or "phosphate slimes," produced in the mining of phosphate rock in Florida. These slimes represent a significant ecological problem and a major deterrent to effective land recovery in the phosphate-mining areas. Physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies were made of slime samples submitted by 15 of the 16 plants in Florida in an effort to identify factors that prevent successful consolidation of the slimes and subsequent recovery of the mined lands. Results of these studies indicated that the clay mineral attapulgite, a hydrated magnesium silicate, was primarily responsible for the very poor settling characteristics of the slimes, and that the quantity of attapulgite in the slimes effectively controlled the settling rate, pulp density of terminal solids, viscosity, percent solids of filter cake, and flocculant requirements.

T HE production of coal in Canada was slightly higher in 1964 than in the immediate past, and the major users continue to be the electric utility and metallurgical industries. There are continuing trends toward the increased use of cokes and chars in various metallurgical applications. Geological Research During 1964, the coal drilling program of the Research Council of Alberta (RCA) was concentrated in the extreme south of the Province (notably in the Milk River area and the region immediately to the northeast of this area). Field work commenced on June 1 and was completed at the end of September, by which time a total of 376 holes, aggregating some 48,500 ft., were drilled in 132 townships. Although no new major coal occurrences were intersected, the pro-gram yielded useful data for defining the extent of the known coal deposits in the area. Over the last four years, a major collaboration between CSIRO-MIS, UCT and JKMRC has produced two significant advances in the modelling of comminution. The Universal Comminution Model (UCM) uses parametric SPH/DEM studies of comminution and separation devices to calibrate mathematical models which are suitable for industrial use. The Virtual Comminution Machine (VCM) uses the same computationally intensive techniques based on discrete element modelling (DEM) and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) to directly model any comminution device by combining a CAD file describing the machine design, sophisticated ore characterisation methods and advanced particle scale flow and breakage simulation. The UCM should be useful for process analysis and optimisation of existing equipment and circuits while the VCM should make a major contribution to the evaluation and development of new machines. Progress to date is encouraging with several processes now well described using DEM. This paper also reports on progress towards combining DEM for particles with a realistic slurry model based on SPH for different types of comminution devices. In due course, this combination should allow accurate modelling of particle transport in wet mills to be combined with DEM models.

Carbonyl nickel powders of irregular particle shape and low a11parent density are used extensively in the production of porous nickel electrodes for nickel-cadmium storage batteries and hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells employing alkaline electrolytes. Such porous nickel matrices are at-tractive for these intended applications as they are relatively inexpensive, are corrosion resistant, have good electrical conductivity, can be welded to form electrical contacts, have a long life (as demonstrated in alkaline storage batteries), and are rugged and vibration and shock resistant. This paper describes a feasibility study concerning the production of porous multi-layer nickel electrodes by the pressing and sintering of stacked layers of green-powder rolled nickel sheet. Background H AUSNER (1) conveniently listed nine different powder compaction processes used for forming metal powders into useful shapes. These are shown in Table I. There are additional powder metallurgy processes; however, most of these are combinations of two or more processes listed in the Table. A study of the literature revealed that every powder compacting process, with the exception of isostatic pressing and explosive forming, has been evaluated or is being used for the manufacture of porous metal electrodes.

In the mining industry, where some of the vehicles are larger than a one-story house, tire maintenance cannot be accomplished by the tire shop alone. It takes an army of people to maintain a fleet of 100 trucks that may be transporting gold, iron ore, oil sand, copper or coal from an openpit to a refinery and eventually delivering the product to a customer. Everyone working in and around these mammoth machines has a duty to help with the maintenance of the tires, whether they know it or not. These responsibilities comprise observation and reporting hazards up to and including changing out a tire and recording the information in a tire-tracking program such as TreadStat.

Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. THE nominal composition of "hconel" alloy 718 is 53 pct Ni-19 pct Cr-19 pct Fe-3 pct Mo-5 pct Cb-0.8 pct Ti-0.6 pct A1-0.05 pct C. The nature of the fine strengthening phase in this alloy has been open to debate. iseelstein' has identified the strengthening phase in the matrix of "Inconel" alloy 718 as a colum-bium-rich fcc y' precipitate. Wagner and Hall2 have noted that the metastable y' precipitate overages to an orthorhombic Ni3Cb precipitate which manifests itself as an acicular phase. These authors thus clarify Kaufman and Palty's earlier suggestion3 that the strengthening phase is orthorhombic NisCb. Wagner and Hall's review also reports work by cometto4 which suggests that the fine strengthening phase is not fcc / but bct with a Ni3V type structure and based on the Ni3Cb composition. Kir man and warringtons have shown by analysis of electron diffraction patterns that the metastable strengthening phase in a 55 pct Ni-15 pct 0-25 pct Fe-5 pct Cb alloy is bct and based on the Ni3Cb composition. Raymond~ has provided electron diffraction evidence which indicates that "y'" in "Inconel" alloy 718 is bct in structure. This note presents unambiguous data on the structure of the strengthening phase in "Inconel" alloy 718* ihe samples of this alloy were provided by courtesy of the ASTM task group on phase identification in 'superalloys. after prolonged aging. The electron diffraction patterns presented show that strengthening phase is not y' but bct as was proposed by cometto,' supported by Raymond,~ and identified by Kirman and warringtons in a similar system. Fig. 1 shows a selected-area diffraction pattern taken from a thin foil of "Inconel" alloy 718. The sample had received a final aging treatment of 1118 hr at 1200°F to precipitate the strengthening phase in the matrix. Fig. 2 is a schematic representation of the features in the diffraction pattern. The matrix orientation is (0i2)~,, as is shown by the indexed zone in Fig. 3. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 illustrate that the pattern, Fig. 1, is composed of three bct zones, viz., (0i4), (2i0), and (i01), respectively. These three zones correspond, respectively, to the alignment of the c axis of the bct unit cell with the [001], [loo], and [OlO] directions of the fcc matrix and serve to illustrate the fully coherent relationship of the precipitate structure with the matrix. The streaking of certain reflections is also consistent with the above orientation relationship. The interpretation of the diffraction effects presented here shows the metastable strengthening precipitate in "Inconel" 718 alloy to be bct in structure and demonstrates that it is not an ordered fcc y' phase.

Many of the economic resources of Egypt have been recognized and exploited for thousands of years (e.g. gold and copper). Most of these minerals, particularly those from hard-rock sited deposits, are found in complex form along with other components while those present in sedimentary sequences are largely in simple compounds or as native elements. Recognition of their characteristic settings (structure, basin development, environment of formation etc.) is the main clue in predicting and locating their presence. The main economic minerals exploited in Egypt today come from sedimentary sequences and include sodium and potassium chlorides, gypsum, sulfur, and sedimentary iron ores. Large amounts of low grade sedimentary phosphates are known but are not of economic value at today's prices. Recent intensive investigation in the north-eastern Sinai (EI Arish) and along the southern coasts of the Gulf of Suez has revealed new and extensive sulfur and chloride deposits, and considerable oil and gas are now being exploited from closely related sediments. Tin is the only mineral that is produced from hard-rock sources, and gold and copper deposits are present but not of high enough grade to be economically viable. However, a significant part of Egypt has not yet been studied in enough detail to close the door on future discoveries. Another point of considerable geological interest is the presence of diverse, modern evaporitic settings, from which we may draw the analogs for many of the older gypsum, anhydrite, chloride and sulfur de-posits. In fact these analogs are so well displayed that both the Sinai and Gulf of Suez-Red Sea evaporites (Middle and Upper Miocene) can be readily compared with these modern deposits.

The evolution of Inco's Selective Reduction Smelting Process as practised today is described, beginning with the initial laboratory experiments on small samples to the processing of large bulk samples through pilot plant equipment. For both the Guatemalan and Indonesian (Soroako) ores, the initial screening tests using hydro-, vapo-, and pyro-metallurgical processes showed that the latter was the most promising both metallurgically and economically. Later, larger scale tests confirmed the earlier testwork.

This program was conducted to demonstrate the unique advantages of suppressing methane ignition in underground mines by use of Energy & Minerals Research Company's thixogel fire extinguishing system, which stably suspends dry powder extinguishing agent in thixotropically gelled liquefied gas extinguishant. As anticipated, the project demonstrated thixogel system advantages of: 1) capability to disperse state-of-the-art powders in thixogelled Halons; 2) non-agglomerating stability for dependable expulsion; 3) stability in storage for long shelf life; 4) virtually in¬stantaneous dispersion; 5) expansive cloud formation; 6) reach and re-forming around obstacles; 7) at least twice the extinguishant effectiveness; and 8) compatibility of use with Fenwal bottles and MSHA canisters. Thus, it should prove a superior explosion/fire suppressant for coal face cutters and triggered barriers, as well as for motorized equipment, electrical equipment and the like.
