Procedures are described for the application of risk analysis or probabilistic methods to mining geomechanics. The methods are widely applicable to existing mine design models. Detailed examples are given of plane slope failure and of pillar design based on displacement-discontinuity stress modelling and empirical strength assessment. The modelling techniques assessed are the Latin hypercube sampling method, incorporated in a spreadsheet environment, and the general point estimate method (GPEM), programmed in TurboBasic. An example GPEM program listing is included. Both methods are very convenient to use. Probabilistic acceptance criteria for slope stability after Priest and Brown are examined and alternatives are proposed where output distributions of factor of safety are approximately normal or lognormal and output distributions of safety margin are normal. The reliability index is included as a useful measure of variability with proposed acceptance criteria.

Through the hearty cooperation of the State coal-mine inspectors, the bureau is able to present in this paper a a complete statement of the coal-mine fatalities occurring throughout the United States during the calendar year 1919. The reports received from the inspectors for the year just closed show a reduction of 10.58 per cent in coal-mine fatalities as compared. with 1918, while in 1918 the reduction was 4.3 per cent from 1917 figures. The total number killed was 2,307 in 1919 and 2,580 in 1918, a reduction of 273. There was a decrease of 128, or 25 per cent, in fa tali ties resulting from mine cars and locomotives, and a decrease of 198, or 15 per cent, in the fa tali ties due to fall of coal or rock. Surface accidents show a decline of about 25 per cent as compared with the previous year. There were, however, increases in accidents due to gas and dust explosions and also explosives. There occurred during the year nine disasters in which five or more men were killed, representing a total of 201 fatalities. The worst disaster of the year was the one occurring at the Baltimore Tunnel No. 2, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., resulting from the explosion or burning of a number of kegs of powder, by which 92 lives were lost. This disaster emphasizes the need for stricter regulations relating to hauling men and explosives into the mine at the same time. The question of whether electricity was responsible or not does not affect the consideration of the various dangers which arise in underground transportation and handling of explosiveB. At best the handling and hauling of explo.sives is hazardous and such being the case, no one, other than the necessary attendants, should be permitted to ride in cars or cages transporting explosives. As a result of this disaster, the report b of the coroner's jury to the governor of Pennsylvania brings out some important dangers to be avoided in the use and transportation of explosives.

The Bureau of Mines actively conducted a well-coordinated research pro- gram during the past fiscal year on problems dealing with the production of oil and gas, transportation of natural gas, chemistry and refining of petrole- um, thermodynamic properties of hydrocarbons, and the processing and utiliza- tion of incombustible helium gas. These particular reserach phases, compris- ing the presently scheduled activities, are integral parts of a broad program selected soon after the war as suitable for Bureau of Mines study, to meet immediate needs for specific information on petroleum and natural-gas problems of national scope. Important progress was made and many technical reports were finished during the year. Several reports were published on gas-condensate production problems, one giving the results of laboratory tests of relative merits of various steels and alloys for rosisting the corrosion that occurs in high-pressure gas- condensate wells. Research was continued, using the Bureau's windowed cell, to determine the characteristics of gas-condensate fluids, and an important paper on the phase relations of these fluids at low temperatures was published. An important part of the Bureau of Mines petroleum production research program for many yoars has been the engineering study of type oil fields. This year reports waro completed on the Lake Creek, Sheridan, and West Rod River fields, Tex.; the Atlanta field, Ark.; and the Bogge field, W.V. Othor fields under study and for which reports will be issued are the Carthage and Now Hope fields, Tex., and the Weber pool, Okla. Spocial studios to determine the characteristics of the oil-gas solutions as they exist within the native reservoir rocks have been in progress in the North Lindsay field, Okla.; the Elk Basin field, Wyo. and Mont.; and the Rangely field, Colo. The North Lindsay study brought to light several un- usual physical proporties of the oil as it is found in this deep-seated reservoir. For instance, its viscosity is less than that of water, and more than 2 barrels of the initial reservoir oil must be produced to yield 1 barrel of "stock-tank oil." In the Elk Basin and Rangoly fields the oil-gas solution varies in composition within the reservoir, depending upon structural location. Engineering studies were continued on woll spacing and on drilling fluids with special emphasis on obtaining uncontaminated cores, or coros for which the flushing action of the drilling fluid can be dotormined accurately. In connection with research on production of oil by secondary recovery methods, progress was made in studies of conditioning water for subsurface injoction, of input ratos and pressures for water-flooding oil sands, and of the selective plugging the more permeable mediurs to prevent or retard channel- ing of the injected fluid. The availability of fuels for all types of internal-combustion engines still is tho primary resoarch project in potroleum chomistry and refining. This rosearch program is subdivided into a sorios of problems under four main topics: (1) Raw-material studios; (2) relationships of fuel consumption, proporties, and performanco; (3) utilization of potroleum products; and (4) analytical mothods, which include chomical and physical property detorminations.

"INTRODUCTION The Ahles iron mine, also known as the Pequest mine, in Warren County, N. J., was operated continuously for 15 years and was still in ore when it closed in 1916.Tie property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in March 1943. 3/ This examination led to an investigation of the deposits by the Bureau by diamond drilling two holes under the old workings to determine whether the extends downward.This report describes the work done at the Ahles mine by the Bureau and presents the data obtained.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Salt mixtures consisting of KC1, BaC12, and HfCl4 with RbCl or CsCl were investigated as electrolytes for refining hafnium. The presence of RbCI or CsCl in the electrolyte appeared to suppress the volatility of. Best electrorefining was obtained with an electrolyte containing 50.7 percent KCl, 27.l percent BaCl2, 15.7 percent CsCl, and 6.5 percent HfCl4. In this electrolyte, hafnium metal with an average oxygen content of 470 ppm was produced from an anode feed containing l,600 ppm oxygen. All metallic impurities were lowered, except titanium, manganese, and tin.

This study is organized under the auspices of the Metal/Nonmetal Diesel Partnership formed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the National Mining Association (NMA), the National Stone Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA), the United Steel Workers of America (USWA) and the MARG Diesel Coalition. The ultimate objective of the study is to reduce the exposure of underground miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM) and gases, and to help in fulfilling the partnership’s goal of identifying technically and economically feasible controls to curtail particulate matter emissions from existing and new diesel powered vehicles in underground metal and nonmetal mines. The majority of current knowledge on the performance of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems and other control technologies is based on studies done under laboratory conditions, the results then being applied the results to on-highway vehicles. According to the best knowledge of the authors, only two comprehensive studies that were conducted recently at Noranda’s Bathurst Mining and Smelting Mine and International Nickel Company’s Stobie Mine under the sponsorship of the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program [McGinn 2001, Bugarski and Schnakenberg 2001, Bugarski and Schnakenberg 2002] offered some insight into the problems associated with the deployment of modern DPFs to underground mining vehicles. The U.S. mining industry has expressed concern that this rather limited knowledge base is not sufficient to help them comply with the rule limiting DPM exposure of underground metal and nonmetal miners [30 CFR 57.5060 2001]. The partnership agreed that a series of comprehensive field evaluations of DPFs in several underground mines was needed to determine their viability of DPF systems and establish confidence in their performance. The first in this series of studies was the one conducted in Stillwater Mining Company’s Nye Mine, Nye, Montana. This study was conducted in two phases. The objective of the first phase was to establish the effectiveness of the selected technologies in reducing diesel emissions by using an isolated zone methodology. The objective of the second phase was to assess the effectiveness of diesel particulate filters in controlling the exposure of underground miners in actual production scenarios. As part of the first phase of the study a series of tests were conducted at Nye Mine from May 19, 2003 until May 30, 2003. The results of Phase I of the study are presented in this report.

This paper presents the results of a full-scale axial compression and tension (uplift) testing program executed on large-capacity helical piles installed in very stiff to very hard clay till soils (i.e. cohesive soils). A total of ten tests including six axial compression tests and four tension (uplift) tests were carried out. The results of the axial compressive and tensile pile load tests and field monitoring of helical piles with either a single helix or double helix are presented in this paper. Helical piles are traditionally used to support light to medium loads (i.e. loads up to 500 kN or 56 tons). However the results of the present study confirmed that helical piles can support significantly higher axial compressive loads up to 2450 kN or 275 tons, which is about 5 times traditional design loads. The study also demonstrated the high tensile capacities of helical piles which was as high as 85% of their compressive capacity. Hence helical piles can provide a viable design option for foundations supporting relatively heavy loads.

A special inlet system has been developed for a TOF mass spectrometer that allows the equilibrated high-temperature vapors from an atmospheric-pressure flow reactor to be leaked into the ion source of the mass spectrometer without undergoing any compositional changes. Using this flow reactor - mass spectrometer system and a modified transpiration system (one that allows for the carrier stream to be equilibrated with two different condensed samples) a series of fundamental vapor transport studies were undertaken. The results of these studies are summarized as follows: 1. The vapor species in equilibrium with condensed copper (I) chloride were determined to be Cu3C13, Cu4C14, and Cu5C15. The gas mixture is fifty percent tetramer near the melting point (703°K), with the percentage of tetramer decreasing with increasing temperature. The following thermodynamic results were obtained.

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells generate electricity by reacting hydrogen and oxygen. A thin, bipolar electrode material provides a medium for electron exchange with the electrolyte, alternately serving as anode at the hydrogen-rich side and cathode at the oxygen-rich side. Stainless steels have sufficient corrosion resistance to qualify as bipolar plate materials. However, the protective chromite layer increases the contact resistance, the battery’s internal resistance; and thus, decreases the electrical efficiency of the fuel cell. A heat-treatment is proposed and investigated via simulation by ThermoCalc / Dictra and experimentally, to generate a sufficient quantity of conducting surface carbides that breach the protective layer. Once carbide growth is arrested, a subsequent heat-treatment is also needed at a higher temperature to restore the corrosion resistance by filling-in the Cr-depleted layer (sensitization) around the carbide particles.

Groundwater inflows during construction pose one of the greatest risks to the successful completion of tunnel projects. Inflows can result in safety concerns, difficulty in mining and ground support, impact sensitive environmental habitats, create surface settlement and increase costs. Adequately planned pre-excavation grouting programs benefit both the Owner and Contractor in reducing risks and controlling project costs and potential schedule delays. This paper outlines strategic guidelines for assessment of site conditions for pre-excavation grouting hard rock tunnels. It also describes the design of pre-excavation grouting programs with respect to project requirements.

Tunnel contracts in New York have in recent years had few bidders with the bids received being much higher than anticipated. Since 9/11, security has become a key issue in planning key infrastructure projects in New York. This is especially true in the case of large water supply tunnels. Striking the right balance between cost and security was the major factor in determining the best configurationfor the Kensico-City Tunnel. This paper outlines the efforts made to determine realistic probable bid costs for the tunnel contracts, and the innovative approaches taken to deal with security issues.

The Grasberg block cave rail haulage system will be located in the Grasberg mining district on the island of Papua, Indonesia at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level. It will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing systems. The design entails approximately 23 km of rail (ballasted and embedded track), over 120 ore chutes to deliver ore to the muck cars and three unloading stations to deliver ore to the crushers. The rail haulage system is a closed-loop system entirely within the underground mining complex.The GBC rail haulage project will be a substantial operation. Trains consist of 11–12 bottom-dump 20 m3 muck cars driven by a 40 t electric locomotive, about 400 t per trainload. Approximately 12 trains and one spare are required to maintain full production at 160 000 t/d. All rail installations will be 1435 mm (standard) gauge with AS60 steel.The rail system is designed to operate in full automated mode, including chute loading, hauling and dumping. The operation will be controlled from a surface control room.The rail haulage project has been divided into five stages, which will be brought online over the course of ten years. Current development and construction are focused on Stage 1 for initial production that will occur beginning in late 2017. This stage includes 24 chutes in three chute galleries, one unloading station, workshop areas and almost 7 km of track (3 km of embedded and 4 km of ballast).This paper describes the key components of the rail haulage system and reports on the current status of development and construction of the system. "Nonlinear foundation springs for bridge caisson foundations show significant coupling between the shear force and bending moment. Implementing foundation stiffness matrix with coupling effects (off-diagonal components) into the global bridge model presents numerical challenges. A simplified approach is developed to model foundation springs including coupling effects using a simple methodology. This simplified model include one translational spring and one rotational spring combined with a rigid link in 2D space. Results show that nonlinear springs (translational, rotational and coupling) can be reasonably captured using this simplified procedure.INTRODUCTIONThe Izmit Bay Bridge is a 3-km long suspension bridge that crosses Izmit Bay in Turkey and is being constructed in a highly seismic region. Figure 1 shows the project location. The South Approach Viaduct (SAV), located along the western margin of Hersek peninsula, is within 5 km from the North Anatolian Fault and within a zone of secondary deformation around the primary trace of the North Anatolian Fault. The proposed SAV consists of 11 Piers and an abutment at the south end of the structure."

Field studies were performed during blasting operations for strip coal mining above the room and pillar workings at Jenny mine in eastern Kentucky. The study is part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop criteria for the proximity of surface blasting to underground mines. Measurements and observations were made to identify physical changes in the mine. No change in the frequency of roof falls or any other indication of apparent damage was noted. Recordings of blast induced vibrations were made using sensors on the roof and floor of the underground mine and at the ground surface. A maximum particle velocity of 17.5 in/sec was recorded on the mine roof. The vibration data were analyzed and comparisons were made between roof vibration levels and those recorded on the mine floor and at the ground surface. Results are compared with previous blast vibration studies. Recommendations are made for further study toward developing criteria.

FOR MORE THAN 200 years, the Kochiu district of Yunnan province has been, and it still is, the hub of China's tin industry. The district produces annually from 80 to 90 per cent of that country's out-put of tin, which averages about 9,300 tons a year and places China fifth among the tin producing nations of the world. The tin ore reserves of the country are estimated (1) at 1,873,370 metric tons, of which 1,500,000 tons are in the Kochiu district. The mill of the Yunnan Consolidated Tin Corporation, described in this paper, is the only one of its kind in China. MINING AND SMELTING There are only two tin mines in the Kochiu district operating with modern equipment -the Hsin-Chang and the Lao-Chang, both owned by the Yunnan Consolidated Tin Corporation, a government company. The Hsin-Chang mine has four working levels with cross-cuts 6 ft. by 6 ft. and is equipped with steel mine cars and trucks to haul the ore. The ore is hoisted to surface in a three-compartment shaft and transferred to the mill by a 4-kilometer aerial tram. The Lao-Chang mine has two circular shafts 656 feet apart, each equipped with two cages. Haulage-ways 1,600 meters and 1,000 meters long, respectively, have been driven to the southwest from these shafts and are connected by three cross-cuts.

Construction of foundations for the Skyway Segment of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge required innovative techniques due to the mass of the structures being inserted and the unique subsurface of the Bay. Twenty of the pier structures required large sheet pile cofferdams. Eight other foundations were installed in open water without cofferdams at the deeper part of the Bay. This narrative will present the initial planning, as well as the stages of installation, for each type of foundation. The first section will discuss foundation constructability modifications made during the initial planning phases of the project. Considerable effort was expended by Caltrans, the owner, T.Y. Lin the designer, and KFM (Kiewit/FCI/Manson) the contractor in modifying the design to assure that required tolerance would be maintained during the installation of the foundations. The final section will describe the steps required for installation including: initial access dredging, installation of cofferdams, preparation required to install the footing boxes, footing box installation, foundation support pile installation, and pile to box connections.

THE copper-nickel sulfide ore deposits of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited contain the minerals pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In the extraction of the nickel, copper, and iron, much of the processing involves oxidation of the metals as well as sulfur. Roasting plays a predominant role at several stages in the operations which prepare the constituent metals for refining. Copper, nickel and iron concentrates of various grades, ranging from low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite to high-grade nickel sulfide, must be partially or completely oxidized. Figure 1 shows the main points at which roasting is conducted at INCO. Roasting experience at INCO dates back to the time when lump ore was partially roasted in heaps. It has progressed through single hearth roasters, sinter machines, multiple-hearth roasters, flash roasters, and more recently has centered on the development and utilization of fluid bed roasters. Introduction The writer was instructed to visit the Chibougamau region during the field season of 1927 and report on the mineral discoveries that had been made there since 1911. lt was deemed advisable to obtain detailed information regarding the rocks underlying the area in the vicinity of these recent discoveries. Accordingly an area 60 square miles in extent was mapped. The outcrops were studied along the water courses and along bush traverses spaced at half-mile intervals between these water courses. The completion of the rest of the summer's programme allowed only three weeks for this work. lt is from this small, mapped area, and this necessarily cursory survey, that the material for this paper was obtained. Location And Means Of Access The name Chibougamau district is applied loosely to an ill-defined area of about 1,000 square miles lying mostly north and west of Chibougamau lake in the Province of Quebec. The lake is approximately half way between lake St. John and James bay. It lies 150 miles north of the Canadian National railway and 40 miles south of Mistassini?lake.
