La electrorefinación en un electrolito de CuSO4 - H2SO4 es usado universalmente para producir cobre de alta pureza a partir de los ánodos impuros. Aunque una parte de las impurezas se disuelve durante la electrorrefinación y se concentra en el electrolito, otros elementos son insolubles y se acumulan como lodos anódicos en las celdas de refinación. Las impurezas deben ser removidas del cobre para cumplir las especificaciones del mercado sobre la ductibilidad y conductividad y para recuperar los sub-productos valiosos como el oro y la plata. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe los equipos y procesos que permiten la recuperación del oro refinado en la planta de metales preciosos de la Refinaría de cobre de Ilo.

The selection and preparation of activated carbon suitable for specific application can often involve exhaustive adsorbent preparation and testing. This work examined an emerging technique based on modelling the correlation of observed adsorption capacity to the carbon characteristics as a means of decoupling the roles of carbon textural and surface chemical properties. The insights to these specific roles are then used in tailor-making adsorbents and in establishing the optimal carbon properties for specific application. In this study, a series of activated carbons prepared from bagasse by physical and chemical techniques and commercially available carbons were used in developing the models. These carbons were tested for the adsorption of thiourea-gold (I) chloride complexes. Thiourea is an important alternative gold lixiviant with the potential to address current ecological and safety concerns in the extraction of gold. A four-component model, which correlated the adsorption gold capacity to carbon textural and surface chemical properties, was proposed. The model fit was assessed using multi-linear regression and a partial F-test. This was followed by goodness of fit test achieved through r2, adjusted?r2 and mean square error (MSE) values. The results suggest the adsorption of the gold-thiourea complex is strongly influenced by the internal surface area and pH of the carbon. Tailor-made activated carbon from bagasse showed adsorption gold capacities of up to 198 mgAu/g adsorbent, demonstrating the potential of bagasse as a precursor for gold adsorbents and of this empirical modelling approach in developing adsorbents for metal recovery.

The influence of microwave treatment on copper flotation has been investigated. Comparative batch flotation tests carried out on ore treated at 5?12 kW for 0.1?0.5 s showed that improvements in copper recovery of between 6?15 % could be achieved compared with untreated ore. Both recovery and cumulative grade increased with increasing treatment time and power. A preliminary economic analysis showed that microwave treatment will be economically viable if recoveries similar to those determined on laboratory scale can be achieved on a plant. Accurate representation of the geotechnical resistance distribution is critical in evaluating the performance of piles and pile groups for design. A current practice is to infer the geotechnical resistance distribution based on measured changes in strain during conventional top load pile testing. Especially for drilled and bored piles, the residual load is typically assumed to be negligible both during testing and after the application of the structure load. A practical result is that the compressive structural load is anticipated to be opposed primarily by the shaft resistance with little or no mobilized toe resistance. The predicted top deflection is estimated as the combined elastic compression plus the movement necessary to mobilize shaft resistance. The development of residual load (and associated negative skin friction) results in a significantly different design condition. Negative skin friction tends to force the pile into the ground and develops residual load in the pile that contributes to the internal compressive load. Significant toe resistance can be mobilized in order to resist the combination of negative skin friction and the sustained compressive load. The pile movement becomes a function of the toe penetration required to mobilize sufficient resistance to reach a balance of forces. In an effort to study the development of residual load in augered cast-in place (ACIP) piles, the authors installed and monitored strain gages that were embedded in an 18-inch diameter ACIP pile at a site in southeast Georgia. The results of this study indicate that residual load develops over time and reaches a distribution that is consistent with the principles of the unified design of piles. It is concluded that residual load develops in ACIP piles (as well as all drilled and bored piles by the same mechanisms) and that the residual load should be considered in the interpretation of load tests and in the pile design, particularly in the estimation of the single pile and pile group settlement.

"New generation of Al-Mg-Si alloys with thermally stable dispersoids that prevent recrystallization and grain growth during hot deformation are currently used in automotive components requiring good formability. Alloy chemistry controls the phase formation especially age-hardening precipitates, dispersoids, and primary intermetallic which have pronounced effect on grain structure, strength and formability. In this work, thermodynamic calculations have been used to predict the effects of varying levels of Si (0.5-1.5wt%), Mg (0.5-1.5wt%) and Mn (0.1-2.5wt%) on phase selection. Thermodynamic calculations have been performed in equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions via the FactSage™ software using the FTlite database. Selected compositions have been cast, heat treated, extruded and characterized through scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy and electron channeling contrast imaging techniques. The calculations showed that at the hot deformation temperature of ~540 oC, exceeding certain Mg and Si levels would lead to retained *-Mg2Si intermetallics and Si particles at the grain boundaries in addition to a-Al-(Mn,Fe)-Si. It was found that retained *-Mg2Si phase which adversely affects formability can be avoided for Si+2Mg levels lower than 2.3wt%. FactSage calculations also showed that increasing Mn from 0.5wt% to 1wt% leads to an increase in the amount of dispersoids (from 1wt% to 2wt%) that can potentially slow down recrystallization and grain growth during hot deformation and improve formability. Calculations at room temperature also show that for an alloy with 0.7wt% Mg, excess Si beyond 0.7 wt% promotes the precipitation of Si clusters in the Al matrix that accelerate natural age-hardening. Results were confirmed by experimental investigation.INTRODUCTIONAluminum alloy 6082 (Al-Mg-Si) is used in the automotive industry because of its high strength, and good weldability (I. J. Polmear, 2006). The alloy is age-hardenable through the precipitation of ß-Mg2Si and its precursors, and the recrystallization is usually inhibited by Mn- and Cr-containing dispersoids formed through high temperature heat treatments (I. Polmear & Couper, 1988). However, it is known that minor changes in alloy chemistry (Mg/Si ratio) can have significant influences on the ductility and formability of these alloys by altering phase selection and the resultant microstructure (Gupta, Lloyd, & Court, 2001; McQueen & Celliers, 1997; Zajac, Hutchinson, Johansson, & Gullman, 1994). For automotive applications where wrought alloys (usually extrusions) are cold-formed to produce suspension components, the chemistry of the alloys and the extruded structure are of crucial importance as they determine the formability at room temperature (Asensio-Lozano, Suárez-Peña, & Vander Voort, 2014). The last decade has witnessed a rapid development and application of slurry and EPB type tunnel boring machines. Both soft ground types are able to excavate tunnels in unstable ground conditions below the water table with positive face support. The most significant component of the excavation process is the cutterhead and tool con-figuration were the excavation and face support meets the geological challenge. The TBM downstream processes cannot take place unless the cutterhead and tools effectively do their job. This paper will review the current state of the art design for both slurry and EPB cutterheads and highlight both common as well as geological specific design features.

Over the last forty years, a number of specific fluidized bed applications in nickel extraction have been developed for commercial use. Five important processes have gained particular acceptance, namely, sulphide ore roasting, nickel sulphide (matte) roasting, nickel oxide reduction, laterite ore pre-reduction, and nickel chloride pyrohydrolysis. These applications involve different feed materials and process conditions, however, all benefit from fast reaction kinetics and high heat and mass transfer rates in the fluidized bed reactors. They have been studied, tested, and implemented by various nickel producers, who have published their results in many papers and patents. This paper examines the design issues surrounding the application of fluidized bed technology to the above nickel processes. Based on the available data in the open literature, computerized process modelling is used to provide generic flowsheets that illustrate the key features of each process.

Reconciliation has become very topical over the last ten years but how do we distinguish what is good practice, and even more importantly, show how it adds value? Reconciliation at Anglo American has received support from the very top of the company and this has enabled success in the design and implementation of a range of processes, reporting activities and actions. Focus has been on full Mine Value Chain Reconciliation (MVCR) from Resource to Product and on proactive cross-functional engagement. A standardised set of reconciliation definitions and relationships are used at all mines across the company to diagnose planning and performance issues. Results are formally presented in an efficient dashboard format, accompanied by a concise narrative to communicate what has been learned and what is being done to correct, improve or change practices. Importantly, effort has also been made to sustain MVCR by embedding good practice and quantifying the benefit of reconciliation explicitly via linking results to value.This paper sets out the lessons learned from the past two-years’ journey, highlighting areas where good practice has been defined and achieved. A ranking for quantifying reconciliation confidence over time is presented as a means of putting results into context and continuously improving the reconciliation process. Finally, a solution to define the value that can be derived from reconciliation is described, detailing how cross-functional personnel meet monthly to review results and implement actions that are tracked in terms of value creation.CITATION:Morley, C and Arvidson, H, 2017. This program involves testing to determine whether a fire hazard exists when the exposed wood surface area of timber in a mine passageway equals 40 percent of the surrounding strata surface, excluding the sill. Twelve full scale fire tests were conducted in a simulated mine passageways, using kerosene pan fires as the ignition source. The tests included three timber sizes, plus one test with roof lagging, two wood types, plus one test with treated timbers, and two ventilation air velocities. The results show air velocity to be an important factor in the occurrence of flame propagation, and that the 40 percent surface area ratio of wood to surrounding strata appears to b0. a valid criteria for fire safety at 150 fpm, but not at 350 fpm.

After years of cutbacks, closures and layoffs, the mining industry is beginning to expand again. Metals prices are up and so is investor interest and confidence in the industry. Gold prices began to slowly move up in January2003 and finally cracked the $12.86/g ($400/oz) mark in early December. Silver, too, is up, as is copper. So the mining industry is feeling good about itself again and many companies are expanding existing mines and developing new ones. One side benefit to mining’s improved outlook is that companies are beginning to send more of their employees to industry conferences. Such was the case at the109th Northwest Mining Association meeting in Spokane, WA. The meeting was held in early December and attracted 1,100 attendees and 84 exhibiting companies. That is up from 2002’s attendance of about 900 people and 65 exhibitors. The theme was “A Partnership into the Future.”

Like most of you, I would rather work on a job than talk about it. But it is fruitful to spend some time taking stock of important developments in the heavy construction field. One of the strongest recent movements affecting the industry has been the push for safety. I regret that it is a recent development. Not that builders were against safety. Too often though, it was easier to continue with dangerous old work methods than to try something new. Too often, it was easier for equipment manufacturers to build production tools with little consideration for worker safety. And too often, accidents and gruesome disasters occurred. The ultimate result of on-the-job injuries in construction and other industries was the Federal Government's Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Individual states were required either to accept OSHA or pass updated regulations at least as stringent as the Federal requirements. These new rules must be strictly obeyed -- not just because they carry civil and criminal sanctions -- but because they correct unsafe conditions and reduce hazardous acts. Though some OSHA measures have been criticized as superfluous, most of them do in fact save lives and limbs. Equally important, the tunneler who follows the new safety regulations can be fairly certain of an efficient, uninterrupted operation. Regulations do sometimes bring rewards.

Laboratory-Scale Magnetohydrostatic Separator for High Resolution Density Analysis of Plastic and Other Wastes Recycling and reuse of different plastic wastes is still a current problem to solve for process engineers and it is true for seeking industrial applications as well as for smaller laboratory-scale, where a given waste sample, plastic or even metallic, has to be precisely separated into narrow density fractions to gain data for industrial design or for scientific research. The principle of magnetohydrostatic separators are known even there are industrial size machines but our primary aim was the development of a laboratory-scale separator for analysis of particles of densities up to 6 kg/L and sizes up to 8 mm. Main parts of the built experimental equipment are the ferrite core with two high power coils. The shape of the ferrite core at the two sides of the separator channel was specially designed to produce isodynamic magnetic field. In these places the ferrite core was constructed from laser cut ferrite sheets. The development of the high power electric supply for the two coils was a real challenge because the high voltage and current (400 V, 30 A) and because it had to be precisely regulated for being able to set discrete relative forces on the particles. Two separator channels were made from transparent plastic. The magnetic fluid is circulated by a centrifugal pump, fresh feed is supplied by a vibrated feeder and products can be taken by built in samplers. The velocity profile in the separator channel is measured by an ultrasonic Doppler velocity meter. Paper reports about the development and itself of the magnetohydrostatic separator and about some fundamental and applied laboratory experiments with different reference particles and wastes from used cars and electrical appliances.

The primary crusher is a key component in the comminution process applied in open pit mines. A collaborative research project between the University of British Columbia and Highland Valley Copper (HVC) was conducted aiming at understanding gyratory crusher liner wear in the overall context of the crushing process. This paper presents an analysis methodology applied to data collected using a laser-based tool for assessing wear in gyratory crushers. Data from the wear measurements was correlated with crusher production information such as current draw and throughput. As a result of the knowledge developed during this work, an innovative way to evaluate crusher liner profiles was created and new mantle profiles were designed. This led to a reformulation of HVC’s standard liner management policy with a resulting estimated annual savings of 13% in total crusher liner cost and a 15% reduction in liner replacement downtime.

Comminution within rod mills has been investigated by use of a matrix analysis of breakage processes. A parameter, the number of breakage stages, has been introduced and comminution within all rod mills has been expressed in terms of the number of grinding stages and a function which describes the feed rate, mill diameter, and mill speed. The effect of variation in feed rate, feed sizing analysis and mill speed on the number of breakage stages is discussed, but no general relation is proposed because more study is needed.INTRODUCTIONRod mills are normally used as the first unit of multi-unit systems for the grinding of metalliferous ores and the cost of operating rod mills may be considerable. For both economic and metallurgical reasons, it is therefore necessary that the mills should be operated efficiently and that a knowledge of the mechanism of the size reduction process within rod mills should be as complete as possible. It is predicted that vast volumes of affected mine water will be produced by mining activities in the Mpumalanga coalfields of South Africa. The potential environmental impact of this excess water is of great concern in a water-scarce country like South Africa. Research over a period of more than 10 years has shown that this water can be used successfully for the irrigation of a range of crops (Annandale et al., 2002)1. There is, however, continuing concern from the local regulators regarding the long-term impact that large-scale mine water irrigation may have on groundwater quality and quantity. Detailed research has been undertaken over the last three years to supplement the groundwater monitoring programme at five different pilot sites, on both virgin soils (greenfields) and in coalmining spoils. These sites range from sandy soils to very clayey soils. The research has included soil moisture measurements, collection of in situ soil moisture over time, long-term laboratory studies of the leaching and attenuation properties of different soils and the impact of irrigation on acid rock drainage processes, and in depth determination of the hydraulic properties of the subsurface at each of these sites, including falling head tests, pumping tests and point dilution tests. This has been supported by geochemical modelling of these processes to quantify the impacts. The results indicate that many of the soils have considerable attenuation capacities and that in the period of irrigation, a large proportion of the salts have been contained in the upper portions of the unsaturated zones below each irrigation pivot. The volumes and quality of water leaching through to the aquifers have been quantified at each site. From this mixing ratios have been calculated in order to determine the effect of the irrigation water on the underlying aquifers. Keywords: coalmines, irrigation, gypsiferous mine water.

The Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) is a new method introduced by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to assist the underground stone mine operator in 1) assessing defects the mine strata and 2) rating the relative roof fall risk these defects pose. The RFRI utilizes observational techniques to identify defects in the roof strata caused by local geologic, stress, and mining conditions. Assessment values for ten defined defect categories provides the foundation for estimating a range of risk conditions between 0 and 100 that define the potential for a roof fall. This paper examines how the defect information is collected using two field verification sites and proposes methods to analyze the RFRI data. These examples provide information on how well the method replicates observed conditions and how it might be applied in practice.
