"INTRODUCTIONThe West Side Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Tunnel Project is located in Portland, Oregon and is part of the Willamette River CSO Control Project. The purpose of the West Side CSO Project is to reduce the frequency and volume of combined sewage overflows from the drainage areas on the west side of the Willamette River using the West Side CSO tunnel as a combined storage and conveyance facility. The sewage is then directed to the Pump Station on Swan Island, which is located on the east side of the Willamette River. From here the combined sewage is pumped through force mains that discharge into the existing Peninsular and Portsmouth tunnels.The West Side CSO tunnel has an inside diameter of 14-feet (4.27m) and is approximately 18,150-feet (5,532m) long. The tunnel slopes at a constant down gradient of 0.0018 from south to north over the entire length of its alignment.The tunnel passes beneath six existing bridges; Hawthorne Bridge, Morrison Bridge, Burnside Bridge, Steel Bridge, Broadway Bridge and Fremont Bridge. The general tunnel alignment follows beneath the Naito Parkway starting at Clay Street Shaft and connecting three other shafts on the west side of the Willamette River, Ankeny Shaft, Upshur Shaft and Nicolai Shaft. It then passes below the Willamette River and on to Swan Island to connect with the Confluent Shaft, which will combine flows from the West Side CSO and East Side CSO (not part of this contract) and then continues to the Pump Station Shaft.The Nicolai Shaft is the primary mining shaft from which two TBM’s were launched to construct the West Side CSO tunnel. The first TBM started mining south and terminated at the Clay Street Shaft. The second TBM started mining north below the Willamette River and terminated at the Swan Island Pump Station Shaft."

Water is the mainstay for beneficiation of fine size coal and minerals; however, it is also the least desirable constituent in the final product. The basic concept of the novel process described in this paper is based on the differential surface heat conduction/ absorption capacity of individual particles, which differs for different species of minerals. When a mixture of fine material is exposed to a radiant energy source, the various solids present in the mixture will absorb heat energy depending on their heat-conducting properties and there will be a difference in the surface temperature of the particles. When this differentially heated solid mixture is placed on a moving belt, which is coated with a low temperature melting resin, the hotter component of the mixture will stick to the belt and relatively cooler particles will stay free on the belt and fall off at the end of the belt run. Experiments were conducted with pyrite, coal, and quartz of 6 × 18 mesh particle size. The goal of the test program was to find the optimum conditions at which there exists a required temperature difference between minerals and coal particles by controlling the operating system variables. Preliminary tests results showed that there is a potential for separating mineral matter from coal using the thermo-adhesive separation technique.

Steady state heat transfer and fluid flow rates are predicted for the counter-current contacting of gas and solid streams. For a .fixed pressure drop across the bed the convective heat transfer rate is affected by the gas flow rate, which in turn is affected by the temperature distribution in the system. Variations in bed voidage and in particle size were found to change the predicted temperature profiles quite markedly, in particular when the thermal capacities of the gas and solid streams were equal. IN Part I we examined the effect of step and pulse changes in the inlet gas temperature on transients in the flow of gases through fixed packed beds. Here we shall discuss heat flow and fluid flow interactions in the counter-current heat exchange between packed solids and a gas stream. Counter-current heat exchange in packed beds has been extensively studied. In his now classical paper, Furnas' assumed constant property values and developed a simple analytical. expression for the temperature profiles in the gas and in the solid stream. A highly sophisticated analysis of counterflow systems, allowing for transients and interparticle conduction was developed by Amundsen. In preparing a very readable review of this topic Elliott' also presented a number of elegant solutions, including the case involving heat generation. A great deal of work has been done on the application of these concepts to the modelling of the blast furnace. However, in all this previous work the mass flow of the gas was regarded as a quantity independent of the gas-solid heat exchange process. In the following we shall consider counter-current heat exchange between a gas stream and a packed bed of solids, under conditions where the pressure drop across the bed is specified, rather than the mass flow of the gas. FORMULATION Consider a packed bed, extending from y' = 0 to y' = L, in which moving solids and a moving gas are contacted in a counterflow arrangement. Let cold solids, with an initial temperature Tsi and mass flow GA, enter at y' = L, and hot gas with an initial temperature of Tgi and mass flow Gg enter at y' = 0. In contrast to the problems considered in Part I this system has a nontrivial steady state and we shall restrict our attention to the study of the pressure drop flow relationships and the resultant temperature distributions for steady state conditions. Under these conditions the formulation of the problem requires the statement of the following: 1) heat balance on the gas 2) heat balance on the solids 3) the mechanical energy balance equation and in addition the knowledge of the equation of state, and a functional relationship between viscosity and temperature and an expression for the heat transfer coefficient in terms of the other parameters. On neglecting temperature gradients within the solids and for a constant mass flow of the gas, the solution to this problem is well known.'" Mechanically-induced chemical reactions between natural beach ilmenite (FeTiO3) and silicon (Si) have been examined by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses. The effect of various milling time on the phase transformation, crystallite size, and lattice strain of a beach sand ilmenite with silicon, and on their leaching behavior in hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been investigated. For mechanically activated FeTiO3, the crystallite size decreased and lattice strain increased monotonically with time of milling. However, the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenite with silicon showed a relatively smaller crystallite size and greater lattice strain compared with the mechanically activated ilmenite under the same milling condition. In accordance with the elapse of milling time, the intensity of both pure FeTiO3 and mechanically activated FeTiO3 gradually decreased. However, in case of the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenitereduction of FeTiO3 by silicon resulted in formation of rutile TiO2 at the milling time of 20 h and afterwards. Additional leaching experiments were carried out at an HCl/ilmenite (wt%) ratio of 20:1. The concentration of HCl was 3 M and the reaction temperature ranged from 70 to 90 oC. Mechanical activation was observed to significantly enhance the dissolution rates of both iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti) in HCl. Particularly, effects of both milling time and silicon addition on the dissolution rates of titanium and iron were significant, while those of temperature were relatively minor under the conditions investigated in this study. "Predicting how coal seams will be beneficiated through the coal handling processing plant (CHPP) has long been challenging within BHP Coal. Various coal seams from different areas are mined and stockpiled separately, often depending upon a deleterious coal quality parameter; high/low trace elements for example. These stockpiles are then fed in different ratios into the CHPP to produce the desired product/s. In understanding the washability characteristics of the feed source, mine geologists and process engineers work together to improve the beneficiation of different coal materials through the CHPP.For the majority of the BHP Coal deposits, the washability data is available for the coal seams across the deposits. However, no previous standardised modelling and prediction technique existed that could ensure the correct information was available for forecasting and refining CHPP processes. This paper will discuss the steps undertaken to implement a geometallurgical prediction tool that simplified and streamlined the washability modelling and yield estimation process. The value realised to the BHP Coal assets resulting from this process was: improved compliance to plan increased throughput increased CHPP recovery through improved efficiencies and increased revenues.CITATION:Handley, P J, 2017. Foi identificada uma trinca no convertedor 2 da ArcelorMittal Tubarão em junho de 2013 durante início de carregamento de gusa, esta se localizava na solda entre o cone inferior e o flange do fundo. A análise abrangeu a avaliação dos danos no vaso, à análise da fratura, análise de material, onde foi verificado que a trinca não foi decorrente de trinca preexistente, nem de degradação do material ou imperfeição de solda. Foi construído um modelo 3D do convertedor considerando-se todos os detalhamentos pertinentes à uma análise termo estrutural. Foram analisadas as seguintes situações: Refratamento conforme projeto do fornecedor – junta de papelão; Projeto de refratamento incluindo influência da junta de dilatação natural 0,2 mm existente no refratário; Carregamento térmico; e situação corrente do projeto considerando proteção de soleira. De acordo com os resultados, verificou-se que a causa da falha do convertedor esta relacionada a esforços oriundos da expansão térmica do refratário.

"This paper reviews the installation, start-up, and operation of a comprehensive monitoring and targeting management technique in which all plant utilities (i.e., electricity, natural gas, compressed air, and water) are managed as controllable resources in the same way that raw materials, mined ore, personnel and capital are managed.The essential elements of monitoring and targeting (M&T) include:•gathering in a systematic, disciplined way the utility information by energy account centres;•closely monitoring the utilities used in each centre and comparing them with production on a common time base (e.g., kWh/ton per day);•bench marking and target setting to pro-vide attainable energy reduction goals which can be further refined as they are achieved; and•establishing an implementation plant that may provide efficiency enhancing benefits to various operating areas within the plant.The M&T system will reduce utility consumption per unit of production on a continuing basis.This would translate into sustained operating cost and waste. M&T will also provide better information for assessing the plant operation and progressively implementing further enhancements."

"Zimbabwe is endowed with rich deposits of minerals such as diamonds, platinum, coal, uranium, lithium, gold, antimony, iron, and chrome. Bioleaching has been implemented as an efficient and low-cost method to extract metals such as copper, cobalt, and gold from sulphide and/or ironcontaining ores and mineral concentrates in a number of countries around the globe. Zimbabwe, despite being a world leader in mineral wealth, has gone through years of economic stagnation which have brought with them energy shortages. Bioleaching is an innovative way to recover minerals from ores using relatively low-capital-cost and non-polluting technology. Principally, iron- and sulphur-oxidizing bacteria can be used to oxidize iron and sulphide to ferric iron and sulphuric acid, respectively, and the ferric iron oxidizes the insoluble metal sulphides to soluble metal sulphates that can be readily recovered from solution. Although some minerals such as gold are inert to biological reactions, they can be liberated using bacteria that act on certain types of ores and other minerals that co-occur with these minerals. The geology of the mineralized areas in Zimbabwe, rich in chalcopyrite / pyrite, allows a number of microorganisms to be used for the extraction of minerals by bio-oxidation. This paper reviews the potential of bioleaching in the country. IntroductionZimbabwe has rich deposits of minerals including diamonds, platinum, coal, uranium, lithium, gold, antimony, iron, and chrome. Bioleaching is defined as the use of microorganisms to facilitate the extraction of metals from sulphide or iron-containing ores or concentrates (Rawlings, 2004, 1997). Bioleaching has been shown to be an efficient (Blowes, Ptacek, and Jurjovec, 2003; Nordstrom and Southam, 1997; Schippers, 2004) and low-cost (Schippers et al., 2010) method to extract minerals in many countries around the globe. For example, aerobic Fe(II)- and sulphur-oxidizing bacteria have been shown to be up to two orders of magnitude more efficient in the oxidation of pyrite than the chemical processes (Blowes, Ptacek, and Jurjovec, 2003; Nordstrom and Southam, 1997; Schippers, 2004). Additionally, bioleaching can be used to extract minerals from low-grade ores, sulphidic waste rock dumps, and tailings efficiently (Schippers et al., 2010)."

At Newmont Corporation drill hole spacing studies are done to support the business in understanding the cost of collecting additional information (with a specific focus on drill hole sampling density) versus the value of additional drilling in terms of resource risk reduction. For the last 20 years drill hole spacing studies have been executed in an effort to answer the following question: What spacing should the deposit be drilled at to achieve a certain level of resource confidence so that when mining occurs the resource model delivers as predicted ie what is the optimal sampling density? The optimal sampling density supports a resource model that provides a sound foundation for mine planning purposes and resource/reserve reporting. At Newmont Corporation drill hole spacing studies are now a requisite for understanding drill data density needs for new deposits and near mine expansions. This paper details the evolution of drill hole spacing studies at Newmont Corporation in terms of methodology and usage.

"Introduction The Saskatchewan Power Corporation is a provincial crown corporation which operates under a mandate to supply all customers within Saskatchewan with electricity and natural gas. The Saskatchewan Power Corporation operates two coal mines within the province of Saskatchewan. The Souris Valley Mine is located a few miles south of the city of Estevan and produces approximately 300 000 Mg of lignite per year. The lignite is shipped about four kilometres by truck and burned at the 882 MW Boundary Dam Power Station, also owned by the Saskatchewan Power Corporation. The Poplar River Mine is located just south-west of the town of Coronach, Saskatchewan which is some 190 kilo metres west of Estevan. This mine produces approximately 1 675 000 Mg of lignite per year. The lignite is shipped seven miles by rail to the Saskatchewan Power Corporation's Poplar River Power Station. The Poplar River Mine is the sole sup plier of fuel to the Poplar River Power Station, which generates some 300 MW of electrical power. A second 300 MW unit is due to be commissioned at the Poplar River Power Station in mid-1983 and the Poplar River Mine will have doubled its capacity to approximately 3 350 000 Mg per year by that time: Souris Valley Mine Geology The Souris Valley Mine extracts lignite from the Estevan seam of the Ravenscrag Formation. This formation is of Tertiary age and was deposited during the Paleocene Epoch. The Ravenscrag Formation outcrops throughout southern Saskatachewan and all coal mined in the province occurs in this formation. Ravenscrag sediments are deltaic in origin and are composed of a series of fine sands, silts, clay and lignite deposits."

This paper presents three case studies from three surface coalmines. The first case study is from a coalmine where a dragline operates in 60 m wide and 1 km long strips. Typical overburden height ranges from 30 m to 50 m. The base case blast was modelled using an advanced blasting model (Distinct Motion Code – DMC) to establish the baseline using the blasting parameters in use before optimisation. DMC was used to model the alternative blasting scenarios to obtain the following key objectives:the post-blast muck pile profile was required to have an optimum height of ~28 moptimise cast percentageachieve a well-fragmented muck pile for the draglinethe muck pile profile should be appropriate for the dragline entry into the strip.Achieving these objectives would optimise the dragline performance through reducing rehandle and improving advance along the strip. DMC modelling resulted in the following outcomes:the required muck pile profile could be achievedthe cast percentage increased from 21.1 to 25.1 – a four per cent increaserehandle volumes were reduced.Establishing a good quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) process was essential to delivering a blast that could achieve these outcomes. The blast was fired successfully and the dragline completed the strip approximately two weeks ahead of the time taken for the previous strip.The second case study is from a coalmine where D11 dozers are used to move the blasted material to the spoil. An optimum profile was required for the dozers for this low-cost mining operation. To achieve this, an electronic blasting system (uni tronicTM 600) was introduced to optimise the muck pile profiles being delivered. The new muck pile profiles showed improved cast percentage from 10.6 per cent to 17.8 per cent. The changes in the muck pile centre of mass displacement improved dozer efficiency as a result of pushing material shorter distances to its final position. Dozer productivity (bcm/h) statistically did not change but coal was being exposed at a faster rate.The third case study summarises the results from a site where dozers are used to minimise the total mining cost. Traditionally, excavators had been used on-site with conventional blast designs. After firing the first cast shot, the blasted material was found reasonably well-fragmented. Although dozing productivity hasn’t been quantified on-site, operators were providing positive feedback (easier push) due to the reasonably good muck pile profile suiting to the dozers. The National Safety Competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, is held each year for the purpose of promoting safety in the mineral industries of the United States. Since the program was inaugurated in 1925, twenty-three safety competitions have been held. This publication is a report of the results of the contests held in 1944, 1945, 1946, and 1947. The names of plants that have been awarded "Sentinels of Safety" trophies and Certificates of Achievement in Safety dur- ing these years, together with a summary of their achievements in injury prevention, are listed. Statistical data covering the injury experience of all plants entered in the annual contests also are included in this publi- cation. The injury statistics of these plants, arranged in the six groups of the competition, are the only data on injury severity at mineral operations available to the Bureau of Mines. Interest in the National Safety Competition has increased steadily. The number of participating plants has increased from 210 in 1925, the first year of the competition, to the record number of 494 in 1946. The widening scope of the competition means that a steadily increasing number of the mines and quarries in the United States are participating in a program that will supplement their other activities in promoting safety. Safety competitions have long been recognized as instrumental in stimulating and holding the interest of employees and officials in accident-prevention work. During the years covered by this report, conditions in the mineral industries of the United States were hardly conducive to setting records in accident prevention. During the war years, handicaps were especially severe- loss of skilled employees to the armed forces or to higher-wage war industries, greater production by a smaller force of workers, relatively high rates of labor turn-over, the longer workday in effect through 1944 and 1945, and difficulties in obtaining repairs and replacement for badly worn machinery. Even the immediate postwar period has brought no abatement of the tremendous pressure upon the mineral industries for greater production. Although there was a decrease of 18 in 1947 from the record enrollment in 1946, these oper- ations worked 160,525,025 man-hours, the greatest number of man-hours of exposure to mining hazards in any year of the contest except 1942. Despite the accelerated pace at which the mineral industry worked during the 4 years covered by this report, participants in the National Safety Competition have achieved creditable performances in the promotion of safety. In fact, the injury-severity rate in the enrolled plants in the 1947 contest was 7.315 days for each thousand man-hours worked, the lowest by far in the history of the National Safety Competition. "Froth Flotation is undoubtedly one of the most critical processes in coking coal washing plants. This work was carried out at Bhelatand Coal Preparation Plant of Tata Steel was with an objective of cost optimization in fine coal processing. The sources of raw coal for the plant include coal from underground mines of Jharia coalfield and procured open-cast raw coal. Coal from different sources vary in quality and possess different floatability characteristics.Synthetic collector is being used in plant as a flotation reagent. An alternate collector with new chemistry was developed for reducing total treatment cost without compromising product yield and quality. A series of laboratory tests were conducted to assess the performance of various sources of raw coal and plant scale trial was started. At first, the new generation coal collector was entirely substituted with the existing collector in the laboratory scale. However the plant scale trial data was not in accordance with laboratory results and indicated inferior flotation performanceThe issue was studied and data based conclusions were drawn that the new generation collector aids faster and uncontrollable kinetics. A decision was taken for co-dosing of the synthetic and new collector for the second phase of the trial. A detailed laboratory analysis was done again and few dosing ratios that predicted optimum results were selected for plant trial. The dosing ratio was optimised as per flotation yield and product ashes during the plant trial. The results showed significant improvement from the first phase and optimum dosing rates were decided based on plant observations and data collection. The influence of various process indicators including water quality, feed and product ashes and process yield was studied during all the trials and promising results were established. The co-dosing of both the collectors conferred cost advantage and enabled to achieve superior performance."

During 1958, prospecting parties working for the Mackenzie Syndicate in the Flat River area of the Mackenzie mountains, Northwest Territories, identified tungsten mineralization and located the property now being developed by the Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd. Scheelite mineralization, associated with pyrrhotite and minor chalcopyrite, occurs in lime silicate skarn replacement zones within a limestone-chert-argillite series intruded by granitic dykes originating from the ? main batholithic mass underlying the sedimentary beds. The results of surface outcrop sampling and 15,000 feet of grid-pattern diamond drilling have been combined to outline an orebody estimated to contain 1.32 million tons, grading 2.51 per cent WO after applying a 10 per cent dilution factor for mining purposes. T HE property of Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd. is located in the upper Flat River area of the Mackenzie mountains, Northwest Territories. Skarn-type replacement deposits containing scheelite mineralization are .situated between elevations of 4,500 and 5,500 feet above sea level along the east flank of the mountain range forming the boundary between the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories. The nearest supply center for the area is Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, located at Milepost 635 on the Alaska Highway.

Most methods for the treatment of scrap printed circuit boards do not reclaim the components in working order as the boards are either fed to a copper smelter, to recover the valuable elements, or, simply landfilled. This work reports the dissolution of the solder in fluoroboric acid containing Ti4+ ions which was particularly selective for solder, allowing the components to be recovered. The solder was subsequently electrowon from the leachant. The boards were then shredded and the copper dissolved in ammonium sulfate and, then treated via solvent extraction to give an electrolyte suitable for electrowinning. The remainder of the metals were dissolved aqua regia, silver remained unattacked by the aqua regia, palladium precipitated as Pd(NH4)Cl6 in the presence of zinc and nickel, the gold was removed by solvent extraction and precipitated as nanoparticles. The aqua regia was then diluted and the zinc and nickel separated by solvent extraction.

The iron and steel industry is experiencing an increase in the use of iron and steel commodities within societies, decarbonisation pressures, depletion of high iron ore grades and high energy consumption. This necessitates scrap metal recycling, low-grade ore utilisation using the induction or electric arc furnace to achieve the global target of net zero CO2 emission. The available highquality scrap metal cannot sustain the steel industry but the world has unused hematite-goethite ores. It is the aim of this research that this resource be utilised using the induction furnace to sustain the steel industry in an environmentally friendly manner. Indurated pellets prepared from the hematite-goethite ore, 5 wt per cent limestone and 5 wt per cent coal addition were smelted in the induction furnace at 1350 ± 50°C with 25 mins holding time. The effects of basicity and carbon content were also investigated to optimise the smelting parameters. The results showed that the careful control of the basicity, and iron-to-carbon ratio maximised total metal recovery. The optimal basicity ratio was determined to be 1.3 and a carbon to iron ratio of 1.4 achieved a total metal recovery of 73 per cent. The metal recovery was closely related to the estimated slag melting temperature. The basicity ratio of 1.3 achieved the lowest slag melting temperature estimated to be around 1380°C based on the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 phase diagram. The recovered metal had a comparable chemical composition and microstructure to that products from an ITmk3 furnace.

During recent months, the acute shortage of steel scrap has necessitated the use of higher percentages of hot metal in the open-hearth charge. With these higher percentages, the sulphur content of hot metal has become an increasingly important factor in the control of the quality of steel. Thus, the blast-furnace operator is faced with a demand not only for more output but for a higher quality of product. More than go per cent of the sulphur charged into the blast furnace is contained in the coke. With the tremendously increased demand, the trend of coke quality has been toward higher sulphur, higher and more variable ash, and poorer physical characteristics. This has been brought about by less selective coal mining, increased production rates in coke plants and resumption of operations of many beehive ovens. In a single month last year, one blast-furnace plant in the Pittsburgh district operated with coke obtained from 52 sources. The effect of variability and quantity of coke ash on blast-furnace operation is well known. The improved results obtained with furnaces operating on coke made from washed coals compared with results on coke made from raw coals is ample proof of the effectiveness of low and uniform ash. Coal-washing plants, however, require a large capital expenditure, and are impractical for most of the large number of small producers, whose operations are confined chiefly to periods of abnormally high demand. Furthermore, not all coals are physically adaptable to washing. Principles 01 Iron Desulphurization in Furnace Although investigations of the blastfurnace process have not clearly revealed the detailed mechanism of iron desulphuri-zation within the furnace, they have been sufficiently extensive to permit a postula tion of the following general principles: 1. Iron, in its travel from furnace top to hearth, continues to pick up sulphur until it has reached tuyere level. The zone of iron desulphurizatioil is relatively narrow, being confined to a vertical distance extending zapproximately from tuyere level to the iron-slag interface in the hearth.' 2. Combustion of coke is confined to spherical zones extending approximately 40 in. from the nose of each tuyere.= Coke ash is released as the coke bums in these combustion areas. 3. With a constant amount of sulphur in the charge, the sulphur content of the metal product is a function of hearth temperature, final slag analysis, slag viscosity, and slag volume. Both hearth temperature and slag analysis affect slag viscosity. For a slag of constant analysis, viscosity always decreases with an increase in temperature;
