The low-grade nickel resource is very abundant in the western China. To make the best of the low grade nickel ore, we studied the process mineralogy and beneficiation process of nickel ore in the Yangliuping of Sichuan province. The grade of nickel is 0.45% in the nickel ore and the nickel exists in the sulfide including pyrrhotite, nickel pyrite, chalcopyrite primarily. The nickel distributes in pentlandite and magnetite over 90% and the copper does in the chalcopyrite over 95%. The carri-er minerals of useful elements tend to concentrate in space for concentration. As is shown in grain-size analysis of three major minerals, there are some more fine-grained grains with the percent of from 10% to 15% (<40 µm) and from 3.5% to 5.5% (<20 µm). So there will be some smaller size disseminated sulfide minerals difficulty to liberate in the process of concentration. The liberation degree of sulfide is not high and there are much associativity in the sulfides. Therefore, we should reclaim the sulfide aggregation dominating as pentlandite when concentrating. In addition, the sulphide minerals is so brittle that we should take care of preventing from crashing when grinding. The gangue mineral is mostly metamorphic mineral including serpentine, chlorite and amphibole which is easy to be argillization and difficult to concentrate.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The USBM&apos;s data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the USBM survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

An experimental study has been made of the possible mechanisms for foam stability in the system CaO-SiO2-Cr2O3, where Cr2O3is the foaming agent. The degree of lowering of surface tension by Cr2O3 was determined at 1600 "C for high -silica melts. Measurements were also made of foam stability under standardized conditions. The results of the two sets of measurements then were correlated by applying the Gibbs and Marangoni theories of film elasticity. It was demonstrated that the Marangoni elasticity effect is probably the largest single contributor to foam stability, although the high uiscosity of&apos; silicate melts makes some contribution in controlling the rate of drainage of liquid from bubble lamellae. ThE tendency of metallurgical slags to foam has frequently been observed during steel-refining operations. In the open-hearth furnace,this tendency is considered undesirable because it slows down the rate of heat transfer from the burners to the molten-metal bath. On the other hand, it is sometimes desirable to have a "foamy" slag in the basic oxygen converter.&apos; A more effective blanket over the steel bath is made by a "foamy" slag, and loss in yield of metal due to splashing is minimized. In addition, a flush slag can be removed more easily in this condition. Since slag-foaming problems in the field have been attacked largely on an empirical basis, it appeared desirable to obtain a better basic understanding of the mechanism of foam stability. The experimental work was directed almost entirely toward the behavior of Cr2O3 as the foaming agent in CaO-SiO,-Cr2O3 melts. In the first stage of the investigation, the degree of lowering of surface tension by Cr2O3 was determined at 1600°C. The second stage consisted of measuring foam stabilities under standardized conditions. The two sets of experimental results then were correlated by applying various theories of foam stability. For convenience in interpreting the surface-tension and foam-stability results reported here, a portion of the CaO-SiO2-Cr2O3 phase diagram2 is reproduced in Fig. 1. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Surface-Tension Measurements. Very little information is available in the literature on the lowering of surface tension of slags by foaming agents. Kozakevitch 3 mentioned that the addition of 1.5 pct Cr2O3 lowered the surface tension of FeO slightly. In another system, some data on the lowering of surface tension of foaming slags by P2O5 were reported by Cooper and Kitchener.4 The technique used for the surface-tension measurements was the maximum bubble-pressure method,&apos; using a single tube immersed to various depths in the melt. This method has been used extensively in high-temperature systems, such as in liquid metals, slags, and glasses.6,7 It has the advantage that the contact angle between the liquid and the tube material need not be known. The aim of the present research work is to study the influence of hard chrome covered skin pass cold rolling rolls using 2D/3D surface topography, i.e. roughness characterization. The common stochastic structure Shot Blast Texturing (SBT) does not meet all requirements related to the production line regards to the finished product. The Hard Chrome layer, applied on these SBT rolls, can improve the sheet surface quality and is of fundamental interest mainly for those steel mills that do not have another alternative to new surface structures such as those that may be provided by the EDT, LT, EBT, etc. methods. The function of the generated surfaces, obtained by these different methods is going to influence the tribological properties during the subsequent forming processes. On the other hand, they can increase the product final cost or require large investments to obtain such surfaces. The results here presented are in accordance with other recently published research work, showing that there is a relationship between these parameters, and that further detailed studies are needed.

"THE OBSERVATIONS that follow are confined to simple wet cyclones such as the cylindro-conical unit developed by the Dutch States Mines and marketed in America under the trademark 'Dorr-Clone'. Energy to do the work comes from the inlet velocity of the feed slurry, which is usually pumped' to the unit by a centrifugal pump.Such cyclones are simply classifiers of enormous capacity and depend for their separating effect on differences in rates of particle settlement. These particle settling rates, of course, vary with particle size, particle density, particle shape, pulp viscosity, and pulp density.The dilution of the overflow product affects both pulp viscosity and pulp density. In most operations, the temperature and the composition of the liquid -hence its viscosity --are fixed, but both pulp viscosity and pulp density can be changed by changing pulp dilution.Since the separating effect depends on differences in rates of particle setting, a perfect split with 100 per cent of the particles coarser than a given size in the underflow and 100 per cent of the finer sizes in the overflow is not possible. Just how far the separation departs from this perfection can be calculated rather exactly from the following principles, which also apply to mechanical classifiers. In removing or settling out of the overflow product all particles up to a specified size, some of the finer particles must settle out simultaneously."

Entretanto, passado o período chuvoso, ainda foram notados eventos de oxidação, que ocorriam também em produtos destinados à exportação. Isto mostrou que havia outra causa atuando no problema, e que era necessário descobri-la e tomar ações para sanar o problema. O produto final é a coroação do esforço produtivo anterior à sua obtenção, e leva consigo o nome do fabricante para onde for enviado. Por isto ele não pode ter falhas. A ArcelorMittal Tubarão montou um grupo de trabalho, que atuou em várias frentes, incluindo o condicionamento químico do sistema de resfriamento direto da laminação. Este grupo de trabalho obteve êxito na tarefa e as conclusões obtidas estão mostradas aqui.

The early history and progress of anthracite stripping, from the first known operation at Summit Hill in 1821 through 1917, was covered in 1917 in a paper by J. B. Warriner,1 then chief engineer, now president of the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co., and stripping methods between 1917 and 1931 were the subject of a paper in 1931 by H. H. Otto,2 of the Hudson Coal Company. . The present paper is confined to methods used today on pitching beds in the western middle and southern anthracite fields. The anthracite industry, not unlike other large industries, had been affected for more than a decade by the adverse economic conditions of the country. High development and operating costs and the competition of other fuels caused some collieries to be closed temporarily, while others were permanently abandoned. In order to obtain a larger tonnage at a lower development cost, a larger stripping program was put into effect by many companies. In 1932, stripping operations accounted for 3½ million tons, or 7 per cent of the total anthracite production of the year, and in the next 10 years this increased until more than double that amount, or over 14 per cent of the total production, was from stripping operations. These figures represent the total production of the entire anthracite region; unfortunately, the figures have not been separated from the different fields. There are some operations in the southern and middle western fields where the tonnage obtained from stripping amounts to more than 30 per cent of the total colliery production. Stripping operations on pitching beds present difficult problems. Owing to the various geological formations, a different situation is encountered in nearly every stripping pit; and because of the proximity of an overlying bed, it is very often necessary to load the entire overburden into trucks and haul it out of the pit to the dump area, although back filling and casting is done whenever possible. Beds in the areas described in this paper pitch from 20" to 90 and some are on the invert in many sharp folds and faults. Planning The more successful strippings have had adequate engineering analysis. Some work is being done without much preliminary planning, but many strippings would have failed completely if close supervision by the engineering department had not been . maintained. This paper is a summary of the work carried out by an international team of specialists in the successful explosive compaction of the sand fill core of the Molikpaq offshore oil production structure. The sand fill core is an essential element for the stability of the structure. The sand core must resist liquefaction forces caused by heavy wave action, ice loading, and earthquakes. Explosive compaction methods were used to improve the stability of 220,000 cubic meters of coarse dredged sand placed in the core area. This project was challenging for a number of reasons. It was performed offshore in Russia, seven kilometers off the East Coast of Sakhalin Island. Logistics were a challenge, not just in getting the men and materials to the site, but also working with restricted headroom inside an operating oil drilling platform. This project called for the use of specialty explosives, strict blast vibration controls requiring a complex sequential blast design, and use of custom designed drill rigs. As Russian equivalent explosives were not available, the project involved getting approval for use of North American explosives in Russia, and use of a combined Russian - Canadian blasting crew. The blasting program was carried out successfully, meeting the required densification target _in a safe, effective manner, with no damage to the structure.

A joint meeting of the local sections of the several national engineering societies represented in San Francisco was held at the Engineers&apos;. Club on Thursday evening, Sept. 26, 1918. The subject for the evening, "Fuel Conservation," was ably discussed by a-number of representatives of the Federal Administration and by engineers interested in the generation and utilization of all kinds of power on the Pacific Coast. The following extracts from papers presented at this meeting have been selected as being of the greatest interest and value to members of this Institute. Problems of the Fuel Administration ALBERT E. SCHWABACHER.-America&apos;s war needs call for 100,000,000 more tons of coal this year than in 1917, and 200,000,000 tons more than in 1914, when the war started, and this increase must come from a weaker man-power than that of 1917. It must be transported by a railroad system that has not been improved since the war started, and has been burdened with inconceivably greater demands than were made upon it before the war. This tremendous increased demand must be met by most intensive work in three directions; increased production, efficient conservation, and a distribution system which will insure against lost motion. While every European country has decreased its coal production since the war began, the United States has mined 50,000,000 tons more coal, during the first year of the war, and will increase this by another 50,000,000 the present year. Every 8 days there are being mined and transported as great a weight of coal as of the entire wheat crop of the United States. Of the 735,000,000 tons of coal which must be made available for consumption by our railroads, ships, war industries and people, 100,000,000 tons will come from the anthracite fields, the remainder from the bituminous fields. In 1917 there were produced about 330,000,000 bbl. of oil, and this year an additional amount over last year&apos;s production, of approximately 23,000,000 bbl. will be required. Water power developed 5,000,000 hp., the demand greatly exceeding the available supply.

"INTRODUCTION DC Water’s First Street Tunnel (FST) is comprised of a collaborative effort between DC Water, DC Water’s Project Consultants Organization (PCO) led by Greeley & Hansen and McMillen Jacobs Associates and the design-build team of Skanska, Jay Dee, and Parsons Brinckerhoff. The fast-track project includes elements that were designed by the PCO and released for construction by DC Water prior to Notice to Proceed (NTP) and elements designed by the Design-Builder from 30% to released for construction after NTP. This required effective communication and technical coordination for integrated engineering and efficient construction. The project, constructed in an urban residential neighborhood, included innovative construction methods such as multiple location ground freezing, utilizing a centralized freeze plant, to minimize community impact. The means and methods chosen for cast-in-place shaft linings, precast segmental tunnel lining, microtunneling, sequential excavation method (SEM) adits and near surface elements reflected the immediate and sensitive surroundings, which varied by construction staging area (CSA). Technical aspects of the project, relative to the evolution from pre-bid to construction documents, are discussed along with modified designs to suit means and methods. SCOPE OF WORK In 2012, four major storm events swept through the District of Columbia and hit the Northeast Boundary sewer shed particularly hard with the neighborhood experiencing severe flooding. The extreme nature of the flooding, the damage to private property, and the health risks associated with exposure to sewage led to a multi-agency response and community calls for answers and action. The Mayor assembled a Task Force to evaluate a range of potential actions to address combined sewer flooding including engineering, regulatory, code revision, and management improvements. The Northeast Boundary Neighborhood Protection Project was the outcome of the Mayor’s Task Force; it is a three-step infrastructure initiative designed to offload the undersized sections of the existing collection system that serves the Northeast Boundary drainage area by implementing the McMillan Stormwater Storage Project, First Street Tunnel Project and the future Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project. Until the Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project is completed, the First Street Tunnel Project will add 8 million gallons of combined temporary sewer storage in a new tunnel under First Street NW to relieve undersized sewers that traverse the Bloomingdale neighborhood."

Cable bolt technology used by the U.S. coal industry was developed to a large extent in the 1990s. Today, these cable systems include both cable bolts and cable trusses to provide supplemental and secondary support in gate roads. This cable technology is significantly different than the cable systems in use in either U.S. hard-rock mines or Australian coal mines. Development of this technology was initiated and spurred by research efforts of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and has continued under the health and safety programs of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). It was also followed up by work of roof support manufacturers to create an essentially new support system. In this paper, the important support characteristics of both cable bolts and cable trusses are discussed. The design of cable systems and the basis for that design for tailgate and headgate situations are reviewed and explained. Case histories are presented on the application of these support systems based on experience gained at a number of in situ test sites.

Utilisation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines after concentration not only helps in conservation of the mineral wealth, but also substantialsly improves the economics of iron ore mining. There has been need to develop suitable beneficiation process for upgradation of low-grade iron ores towards their rational utilisation. Presently the circuit adopted for processing iron ores has limitations in reduction of alumina. The depletion of high-grade reserves, utilisation of low-grade reserves coupled with in-creasing market pressure for improved product quality necessitates re-examination of the process flow sheets and evaluate alternative or supplemental processing routes. The main objective of the Process amenability studies for utilisation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines (-10mm) is to get Pellet grade concentrate with +65% Fe (min), SiO2 1.8% (max), Al2O3 1.8% (max) and other proportionate constituents by adopting suitable beneficiation techniques and to collect the relevant data (Quality and Quantity of the Products) for the process development. In an effort to formulate a conceptual process flow sheet, the Process amenability studies for utilisation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines (-10mm), which is lying at a mine site in India, samples were collected and taken up for the study. The efforts of R & D of NMDC are discussed in this paper. Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines (-10mm) sample assayed 60.10% Fe with 3.48% SiO2 Aland 4.48% 2O3from 40 microns to 300 microns. The sample consists of hematite as the chief ore mineral followed by minor amounts of maghemite. The gangue minerals include quartz and ferruginous clay in which quartz occurs as medium grained where as ferruginous clay occurs as fine to sub microscopic size mineral. The economical processing route evolved out of the studies finally could yield a final concentrate constituting 58.63% by weight along with Iron unit?s recovery of 63.51% assaying 65.10% Fe with 1.48% SiO2 and 1.85% Al2O3route that adopted comprises the following operations. Making slurry in a sump pump followed by grinding in close circuit with 48mesh size Screen. The -48 mesh size product was subjected o the Cycloning to remove slimes. The Cyclone Underflow product was subjected to Floatex Density Separation (FDS) to separate fine heavy minerals from the gangue minerals. The FDS Underflow was collected as concentrate. The FDS Overflow product was further subjected with Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) to recover more Iron units as magnetics. A conceptual process flow sheet was evolved, which may become the prelude to the subsequent finalisation of the process flow sheet for commercialisation.

The decline of ore grades on land, increasing demand and high prices for various minerals have led to an increased interest in mining the deep ocean sea floor. The potential deep ocean reserves are vast and in some circumstances the grades are high enough to consider mining. However, the consequences of such mining are as yet uncertain. This paper will present the results of a comparative assessment of life cycle impacts of deep ocean minerals. Two alternative extraction technologies from different deep ocean resource types were examined and key commodities are considered. Initial results indicate that the energy requirements will be higher than the average land-based resources, but may fall within the range of the deepest terrestrial mines.CITATION:McLellan, B C, 2015. "The efficiency by which an applied load is transmitted from the matrix to reinforcing fibers in a composite depends on the fiber/matrix adhesion strength. This is determined as the interfacial shear strength, IFSS, which may be measured by means of pullout tests that measure the force needed to pull a single fiber out of a block of material simulating the composite matrix. Different techniques are used to perform pullout tests. The objective of this work was to characterize the IFSS of sisal fibers embedded in epoxy matrix through the determination of the critical length pullout curves. As the main results, a relatively small critical length was found for the sisal fiber/epoxy pullout specimens, corresponding to a weaker IFSS. This was compared to other results applying different pullout techniques. Scanning electron microscopy observation identified the mechanism responsible for the weak sisal fiber adhesion to the epoxy matrix.IntroductionSynthetic fiber reinforced composites is today one of the most successful class of materials with increasing industrial applications from house appliances to large airplanes like the modem Airbus 380. However, environmental issues are revealing serious drawbacks related to the fabrication, use and post-use discard of these composites. For instance, the thermoset polymer composite reinforced with E-glass fiber, known as ""fiberglass"" has an energy-intensive fabrication associated with a surplus emission of C02, which is responsible for global warming [1]. Moreover, the glass fiber is considered toxic and also causes long term pollution after being discarded."

The estimation of process plant head grade is not trivial and is a source of constant dispute within the mining industry. Grade estimates informed by the short term mine planning are frequently not reproduced by sampling the continuous flow of ore at the plant. Head grades are normally obtained by periodically sampling the continuous flow during a day or shift, and taking the average of the multiple increments collected. The standard error of this mean grade depends on the ore variability and the frequency (number) of aliquots extracted. The more increments are taken the higher is the precision on the calculated mean. Variographic experiments are normally used to map grade variability along a certain period of time and the extension variance is derived from this variogram. This experiment is time consuming, expensive and cumbersome. Mining industry personnel rarely apply this approach. Additionally, a temporal variogram can vary from day to day as different ores are mined along the life of the mine. This paper investigates a novel approach based on simulating the grades feeding the processing plant. In situ 3D grade models are built using geostatistical simulations. Grade spatial continuity and variability are reproduced in models that mimic the real deposit. These models are used in mine planning and scheduling transforming a 3D block model into an one dimensional string of values feeding the plant (one dimension flow). These grades have the statistical characteristics of the unknown real grades and can be sampled to emulate a variographic experiment. The results showed consistency and adequacy to estimate the sampling error (Gy, 1998 p 31) for various sampling intervals using the simulated grades. Also the results show a variographic experiment can change significantly from time to time, as ore changes and a selected sampling protocol can become obsolete if not adjusted for ore variability.CITATION:Costa, J F C L and Marques, D M, 2012. Mineral carrying rates across the pulp-froth interface in the range of 1.4-3.2 tph/m2 and bubble surface coverages between 7 and 22 %, have been determined in large rougher flotation cells operated under normal conditions. To evaluate these variables, measurements of bubble size distribution, bubble load and size distribution of particles collected by true flotation, were performed at different concentrators. A model for estimating the bubble surface coverage at the pulp-froth interface level as a function of bubble load, Sauter mean bubble diameter and particle size distribution of the mineral collected by true flotation, was developed. Bubble loadings in the range 24-70 kg/m3, bubble sizes between 1.5 and 3.2 mm and superficial gas rates between 1.2 and 2.0 emfs, were measured in copper rougher flotation cells under normal operating conditions. Estimated bubble surface area fluxes were in the range 31 to 62 cm2/s/cm2- Results of carrying rates and bubble surface coverage, at the pulp-froth interface, were significantly lower than the maximum carrying rate for the collection zone, indicating that in this case is difficult to achieve maximum carrying rate at the pulp-froth interface level. The main constraints regarding carrying capacity limitations are then related to the froth transport characteristics (i.e. cell design, froth residence time, froth stability, froth recovery). "The yearly production from the Asbestos Hill pit is 1,550,000 tons of asbestos ore, with a yield varying between 18 and 20 % . The orebody was exposed at the top of a hill, and initial production started without having to remove any overburden. The projected ratio of barren rock to ore, based on the present orebody, was 2 to 1. However, as it was necessary to push back the upper benches, this ratio has changed to 3 to 1. The final pit will be 2,300 feet long by 1,000 feet at the longest and widest points. The final depth will be 680 ft. A pit slope stability study was carried out and an average wall angle of 60-70 degrees must be maintained. Preshearing of final pit limits will produce good wall stability. Permanent access ramps will be 60 ft wide, with an 8 % maximum grade. Geological conditions and the low rock temperature are the major causes of the operation's drilling and blasting problems."

Este trabalho descreve a implantação do sistema IBA na fábrica de tubos sem costura da VSB, a mais nova e mais automatizada do país. O trabalho destaca os bons resultados alcançados utilizando o IBA como ferramenta de manutenção e da inovadora visão do IBA na VSB, aonde rompeu as fronteiras da manutenção e atingiu as áreas de produção, desenvolvimento técnico e qualidade. A implementação do IBA na VSB teve grande relevância para a eficiência do comissionamento e start-up da fábrica de tubos. A capacidade de aquisição de dados em alta velocidade associada às diversas funcionalidades de análise de dados propiciaram meios de aprendizado sobre o processo, identificação rápida de problemas e difusão de conhecimento. Todavia, na VSB, a ferramenta extrapolou os limites da manutenção e alcançou funcionalidades também nas áreas de qualidade, produção e desenvolvimento técnico. Outra funcionalidade desenvolvida pela VSB no IBA foi a capacidade de analisar oscilações de variáveis de processo ao longo do comprimento dos tubos produzidos e não só ao longo do tempo, como usualmente é feito. A capacidade do IBA PDA na aquisição rápida de dados possibilitou fazer ajustes finos nos tempos de ciclo de cada equipamento, deixando a medição mais elaborada e precisa, auxiliando a identificação dos locais que são gargalos de produção. A possibilidade de visualizar, com resolução de milissegundos, os eventos que ocorrem ao longo do tempo, ajudou a reduzir o tempo de análise e correção de falhas.
