The Bureau of Mines, in its alumina miniplant project to investigate alumina recovery from domestic, non bauxitic ores, has conducted research on the use of a hydrochloric acid leaching, gas sparging crystallization technology. An important element of this research is the efficient separation of undissolved, siliceous residue from AICI3 -bearing leach liquors by continuous, horizontal, countercurrent vacuum belt filtration. In an effort to calculate material balances quickly and to predict material balances based on different belt filtration configurations, the perfect-mixing-cells-in-series model (PMCS) for calculating material balances around belt filters was used. Because of the porous nature of the solids, the model produced erroneous material balances. Therefore a reliable model, the shrinking voids model, was developed postulating the presence of an unwashable voids liquor volume that decreases with decreasing liquor AICI3 concentration. This volume decrease postulation is equivalent to assuming that dilute liquors flow more freely, causing more voids liquor volume to become washable. Least-squares based computer programs are provided, which are useful not only in producing material balances from plant data but also in predicting balances for untested configurations using the same feed materials.

The East Kootenay coal-field, situated close to the boundary between the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, is composed of four small areas locally called the Crow's Nest Pass, the Upper Elk, the Flathead and Crown Mountain, and comprises an area of about 3 78 square miles. From eleven to twenty-five seams have been exposed of two feet and over in thickness, with a total thickness of about 200 feet of coal, and reckoning about one hundred feet to be workable, gives an estimate of coal available of about thirty-seven billion tons. The coal is a high-grade bituminous, occasionally tending towards anthracite, and the majority of the seams furnish a. very good quality of coking coal as well as an excellent steam coal. The coal-field is found in the mountain ranges in long narrow strips. The age of the fonnation and the thickness of the covering beds have had considerable influence on the character of the coal, and lateral pressure and disturbances in the process of mountain-building have wrought great changes. With such an abundance of coal, it has been a disappointment that the East Kootenay field has not figured larger industrially. So far only one portion of the coal-field has been utilized. This is the Crow's Nest, where, in 1898, the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company commenced development. Access to the coal seams was easily obtained, the mountain creeks having eroded away the covering, and mines were driven into the coal seams. In that year about ten thousand tons of coal were produced from the mine at Coal Creek.

Since the flow behaviour of slurry containing both coarse and very fine particles has not been sufficiently clarified, the paper focuses on the experimental study of the particle size distribution, time and intensity of shearing and the effect of chemical agents on the hydraulic gradient versus the average velocity relationship of fluidic ash slurries in the laminar and turbulent regimes. The recirculation pipe loop with smooth stainless steel pipes of inner diameters 26.8 and 36 mm was used for measuring the ash-water mixtures flow parameters. The dense fluidic ash-water mixtures behave as time dependent non-Newtonian slurries. Shearing, the addition of bottom ash or chemical agents, favourably affects the flow behaviour of dense fluidic ash-water slurries. The hydraulic gradient in the laminar region significantly decreases; also the laminar/turbulent transition region is reached for lower flow velocity.

Use of bored displacement piles has experienced significant growth in the UK piling market sector, largely due to their environmental advantages over other piling methods and through cost benefits. Bored displacement piles are a cast-in-situ construction which can be formed with minimal production of spoil and offer low noise and vibration compared to driven displacement piles. A large variety of bored displacement piles have been developed. This paper describes a standard system for their classification. The development of the different types is described along with the factors which have led to their increased use. Consideration is given to processes undergone by the soil during pile installation and design approaches for bored displacement piles are compared. Comparisons are made between the different classifications of bored displacement pile. Comments are also made on the installation of such piles. It is concluded that complex changes occur in the stress states of the surrounding soils. Such effect of the pile installation on the soil should be accounted for and there is a need, therefore, to further refine the design process for these piles.

High concentrations of airborne coal particles is the main reason leading to health and safety hazards in underground coalmines. Water spray is one of the effective methods to suppress coal particles in mine sites, but the use of plain water is not effective enough to capture coal particles. By adding surfactants, coal wettability can be improved which will increase the coal dust suppression efficiency. In this study, a modified sink test was employed to evaluate coal wettability in the presence of two anionic surfactants: sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). Sink rates were calculated by measuring sink weight over test time. Different surfactant concentrations (0.01 per cent, 0.05 per cent, 0.1 per cent, 0.2 per cent and 0.4 per cent) and two types of water (tap water and deionised water) were selected to investigate coal wettability over three size ranges (0–38, 53–75 and 75–90 µm). The results show that both SDS and SDBS surfactants can lower the water surface tension and improve coal wetting performance. Sink rates increased as the surfactant concentration increased, and surfactant solutions prepared by tap water performed better than deionised water in enhancing coal wettability. Also, coal wettability varied for different coal particle sizes; the smaller coal particles were, the worse the wettability they possessed.CITATION:Chen, Y, Xu, G, Wang, R and Albijanic, B, 2017. THE PROBLEM Two and a half years have gone by since the December, 1976 Civil Engineering article on subway costs caused such a furore. What has happened in this interval? Even after discounting the crushing inflation rate, costs are still increasing, and there is no sign of a turndown, even in the rate of increase. Some steps outlined in the article have been taken. In April this year, the first D.O.T.-sponsored Peer Review Group, made up of managers of other transit properties, met in Boston to review MBTA's $500 million Red Line Extension-Northwest for cost effectiveness. While the impact of a review at the end of the design phase, with substantial segments under contract, cannot be as effective as a review early in the design phase, it is nevertheless a start. This first meeting will be followed by a review of Boston's Orange Line relocation, the final design for which is just underway. In the industry at large two facts are evident: 1. We are failing to reduce underground construction costs. 2. Underground construction is in danger of pricing itself out of the market place. It has always been a greater challenge to design a Chevvy than to design a Cadillac, but it is the Chevvy we need today. Much attention has been focussed in the past on engineering design in the narrow sense: areas such as ground loading conditions and concrete design. "Cyanide tailings of gold and silver concentrates contain considerable quantities of copper-lead-zinc sulfide minerals that can be recovered. However, the strong inhibition effect of cyanide often makes it difficult to recover these sulfide minerals effectively. In this research, a sample of cyanide tailings was investigated based on the principles of process mineralogy; activating flotation tests were carried out for the target minerals in the tailings, and the activation mechanism of the activator and its influence on the target minerals were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Mixed flotation of copper and zinc was carried out using QJ-01, a combined agent containing sulfite, as the activator of copper and zinc minerals, and ammonium dibutyl dithiophosphate (ADD) and butyl xanthate (BX) as the combined collector. Copper concentrate was obtained from the mixed concentrate by using a combined inhibitor of sodium sulfide and zinc sulfate to inhibit the zinc mineral. Zinc concentrate was extracted from the copper tailings by using copper sulfate as the activator and BX as the collector. The flotation test yielded copper concentrate with a grade of 22.56% and recovery of 76.96%, and zinc concentrate with a grade of 42.56% and recovery of 82.29%, which shows that comprehensive recovery of the sulfide minerals – copper and zinc –from the cyanide tailings was realized. The FTIR analysis showed that CN- was chemisorbed on the surface of chalcopyrite and sphalerite following cyanide treatment, while the combined activator QJ-01 containing sulfite reduced CN- into SCN- and weakened the complexing ability of CN- with metal ions on the mineral surface, thus achieving a good activation effect on chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The results of this study can provide practical guidance in increasing the resource utilization ratio of cyanide tailings in gold mines, and thus contribute to alleviating environmental problems caused by stockpiling cyanide tailings. INTRODUCTION Cyanidation, the most widely used technology for extraction of gold, has several advantages such as high recovery, process maturity, low cost, etc. According to available data, the annual discharge of cyanide tailings from China's gold mines exceeds 20 million tons (Li et al., 2011). Lower grades of exploitable gold ore entail increased discharge of cyanide tailings. Huge quantities of cyanide tailings are regarded as waste and stored, resulting in significant wastage of land resources. Moreover, residual beneficiation reagents, cyanide ions, and heavy metal ions in cyanide tailings cause severe pollution of water and land (Laitos et al., 2013; Donato et al., 2007; Mudder and Botz, 2004). In addition, cyanide tailings often contain valuable elements such as gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, sulfur, and iron, which, if not recycled, would result in considerable wastage of resources. Hence, it is imperative to study the reduction and safety of cyanide tailings, and the mineral resources present in them."

While high production rates are important for the profitability of a mine, the influence of geotechnical engineering cannot be ignored. In block caving, a high-stress level is required for cave propagation; this is one of the core elements for ore recovery. Therefore, stress distribution and geological structures play a major role in the planning and layout design of the mine. This paper explores the influence of stress and geological features on the design of the mine from the feasibility study phase. The geology and stress measurement of the mine were determined through logging and overcoring, respectively. This study found that while production rate is the primary operational consideration, the long-term layout design of the undercut face advance, face angle, drawpoint spacing, and undercutting sequence is mainly governed by the stress orientation and major geological structures. Moreover, widely spaced drawpoints result in isolated draw zones, consequently, resulting in ore loss and early dilution whereas closely spaced drawpoints affect the stability of the major apex pillar. This paper also provides insight into how operations can leverage stress distribution to optimise mine layout and safety in massive mining methods.

A reduction roasting/magnetic separation/flotation process for beneficiating oxidized taconite from the western Mesabi iron range in Minnesota was evaluated in a Bureau of Mines research program to insure an adequate supply of raw materials for future ironmaking and steelmaking needs. The research was performed on a sample containing 35.4 pct iron and representing a deposit of approximately 2 billion tons of raw materials. An average of 1,419 lb of oxidized taconite and 37 lb of lignite reluctant per hour were fed to a 35 -foot rotary kiln in which the iron oxides were converted to artificial magnetite. The kiln was heated with pulverized lignite and natural gas. Most of the dust collected from the kiln exhaust gas was pelletized and recycled to the kiln. Magnetic separation and cationic flotation of the roasted material in a 900-lb/hr pilot plant produced a concentrate analyzing 67.9 pct iron and 4.9 pct silica and containing 69.2 pct of the iron in the kiln feed.

The Hemlo Gold District, located on the north shore of Lake Superior, was discovered in 1981 and will become one of the largest gold mining camps in Canada. Three major Canadian mining companies are presently developing large orebodies and are scheduled to commence production at various times through 1985 and 1986. This paper describes the types of shaft sinking equipment and technology being used by contractors in constructing the required shafts to depths below 1000 metres. The principal shaft design criteria, types of shaft sinking machinery and relevant manpower allocations are discussed.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Tuwu-Yandong Cu deposit, located in the East Tianshan mountains in the eastern section of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, is the largest and economically most important porphyry Cu deposit in Xinjiang, China. It contains ~3 Mt of copper at an average grade of 0.46 per cent Cu and 0.2 g/t Au, with significant amounts of Mo and Ag. The deposit is mainly hosted in the Carboniferous Qi’eshan Group and plagiogranite porphyry, and is controlled by faults that are east–west-, north-west- and north-east-trending. Ore minerals in the Tuwu-Yandong deposit are dominated by pyrite, chalcopyrite and molybdenite, with minor bornite, chalcocite, magnetite, sphalerite and galena. Gangue minerals are mainly composed of quartz, sericite, chlorite, epidote, anhydrite, gypsum, muscovite, biotite, phosphorite, sphene, dolomite, actinolite, barite, albite and calcite. Based on the megascopic and microscopic textural relationships and mineral assemblages, five stages of hydrothermal alteration and hypogene mineralisation are recognized in the Tuwu-Yandong Cu deposit: the potassic stage, propylitic stage, phyllic stage, late veins stage and supergene stage. The Gameta Gold Deposit is located on the north-eastern corner of Fergusson Island in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands of Milne Bay Province, PNG, at lat. 9¦ 25' 5, long. 150¦ 47' E or AMG co- ordinate 256740 E/8959000 N (Figure 1). The area is covered by the Fergusson (SC56-05) 1:250,000 scale Topographic Map Sheet and the Koitabu (9079)1:100,000 scale Topographic Map Sheet. The property is held 100% by Union Mining NL (UMG) and lies 105 km NNE of Alotau and 33 km to the ESE of UMGs recently developed Wapolu Gold Mine, a Joint Venture between UMO (51%) and Macmin NL (49%). The inferred resource estimated from surface results and 105 RC drill holes, currently stands at 1.89 million tonnes at 2.6 git gold (1.0 g/t Au cut-off) or 155,000 oz. Evaluation of the property is currently proceeding. To date 111 RC holes have been drilled for a total of 4611 m.

Ongoing development work on ultra-fine grinding for various applications at the Group?s concentrators has been conducted by Anglo Platinum over the last few years. Current potential applications for mainstream grinding and concentrate grinding are the subject of a group-wide research and development programme. The first 10 000-litre 2.6 MW IsaMill was jointly developed by Anglo Platinum, Xstrata Technology and Netszch for installation at the Western Limb Tailings Re-treatment project in Rustenburg, South Africa. The unit was commissioned in late 2003/early 2004, and has operated in an intermediate concentrate regrind application successfully since. This paper describes the operational performance to date, as compared with the original duty specifications and objectives. The first mainstream M10 000 IsaMill with a 3 MW drive will be operational in November2006 at the Potgietersrus Platinum (PPL) ?Platreef? Sandsloot Concentrator in South Africa?s Limpopo Province. Virtually all new technologies require a control system. Any intense process has many process variables that react quickly making manual control difficult. Control system design has a significant impact on the success of a plant especially during ramp-up. New technology projects are particularly sensitive to control system design as the process response is unknown. This paper discusses the important factors encountered in the design of a control system for a new technology. Examples are given of successful new technology plant start-ups where tight coordination of the process control system implementation, process design and selection major equipment led to rapid ramp-ups.

"The flow field in a rotary kiln, used in an iron ore pelletizing process, was investigated using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model. The model is isothermal, downscaled and simplified. The objective was to examine the possibility of capturing the unsteady motion of the flame seen in the real kiln. The results from the simulations were compared with recorded images of the real process. The results demonstrate the possibility of quickly getting an overview of the flow field in the kiln. The main, unsteady behavior of the flame was captured. The model may be used as a tool in the ongoing work of improving and optimizing the pelletizing process.IntroductionThe pelletizing process, in which the crude iron ore from a mine is upgraded into pellets, is a process involving large amounts of hot air flowing in complex geometries. Flow control is a crucial factor in this process to maintain high pellet quality. The rotary kiln is one of the last steps in the pelletizing process, and this is where the pellets are sintered to increase their strength and metallurgical properties. The kiln burner produces a flame that supplies the entire pelletizing process with the necessary heat.Kiln burner flames are large diffusion flames arising from a jet of fuel from the burner issuing into a concentric confining cylinder with a surrounding coflow of air, called secondary air. To enable combustion, the secondary air needs to be entrained into the fuel jet. This mixing of the fuel and air is the slowest step in the combustion process and therefore affects the efficiency of the combustion. The rate of entrainment depends on the momentum ratio between the burner jet and secondary air. The higher the momentum ratio, the faster the entrainment rate and, consequently, the faster is the fuel/air mixing.The kiln of interest in this study differs from kilns used in other industrial processes in both geometry and operating conditions. A distinguishing feature is the large amount of secondary air being induced through the kiln hood and then transported to earlier stages in the process as air or exhaust gas. The secondary air therefore has a substantial momentum, implying that the resulting flow field has a significant impact on the mixing and combustion process in general and the flame shape and stability as well as combustion efficiency in particular. A systematic study of the factors influencing the dynamics of the flow field in the kiln, neglecting the combustion, is therefore justified."

A mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms was enriched from Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) samples collected from several chalcopyrite mines in China,which can leach copper from chalcopyrite effectively. Its tolerance to chalcopyrite was brought up to 80 g/L after being adapted to gradually increased concentrations of chalcopyrite. The effects of several leaching variables on copper recovery in Stirred Tank Reactor had been investigated. The ore contained chalcopyrite (62.2%) and galena (25.6%) as the main sulfide minerals. The results of the tests show that it is possible, operating at 8% of pulp density to attain copper extraction of 75% in 44 days. The leaching rate of chalcopyrite tends to increase with the dissolution of total iron. Microscopic counts of microorganisms in the solution tend to be higher at low pH range. Furthermore, the analyses of leached residues indicate that the passivation of this chalcopyrite is mainly due to the formation of a mass of jarosite and anglesite (about 48.3% and 21.7% in residue respectively), other than elemental sulphur layer. The bacterial community composition was analyzed by using amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA). Two moderately thermophilic bacteria species were identified as Leptospi-rillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus caldus, with different proportion in the bio-pulp, 67% and 33%, respectively.

Electric utilities depend heavily on coal as a major fuel source for power generation, annually producing more than 85 million ton'> of ash, boiler slag and FGD (flue gas desulfurization -"scrubber") materials as by-products. Utilities and others who burn coal have traditionally disposed of these by-products in ponds or landfills. However, in the last 10-15 years there has been a greatly increased emphasis on beneficial utilization of these materials by the producers themselves as well as by customers who purchase the by-products. Regulatory, cost and technical performance issues currently impact the use of coal ash and other coal combustion by-products (CCB).
