IT has been suggested that boron in steel may form a film entirely around the austenite grain and that this film is responsible for the boron hardenability effect. In this connection, it is of interest to examine some of the ramifications of the concentration range of boron usually employed in hardenable steels, namely 0.0005 to 0.003 pct in a grain size range of ASTM grain size No. 1 through No. 10. The ratio of the iron to boron atoms and the number of unit cells of y iron per boron atom are listed in Table I. Even at the highest concentration considered, there are 1600 unit cells of y iron per boron atom, assuming a uniform distribution of boron. To investigate the possibility of the boron film formation, the number of boron atoms required to cover the grain surface completely must be calculated. With some transition elements, boron crystallizes in sheets composed of equilateral hexagons very much like graphite.' The selected value for the length of a side is 1.80Å. A simple calculation shows that two boron atoms cover an area of 8.4x l0 -16 sq cm. Table II lists the number of atoms of boron required for the formation of the monatomic film and Table III lists the number of boron atoms per grain. The hypothetical cases of 100 pct and 10 pct adsorption are calculated (all boron atoms in a grain and 10 pct of all boron atoms in a grain are located at the grain surface respectively). In Table 111, all combinations of grain size and composition below and to the left of the solid line (100 pct adsorption) and the dashed line (10 pct adsorption) are excluded as to the possibility of covering the grain surface with a continuous boron film. Thus, even for 100 pct adsorption, the smaller grains can form the film only at the higher concentrations. For the best case, grain size No. 1 and 0.0030 pct B, the required degree of adsorption is 3.9 pct. The above calculations deal only with the number of boron atoms required to form a monatomic film and do not take into account the mechanism of concentration of boron at the grain surface and the possible limitations to the extent of this concentration at a constant temperature, as for example in the austenitizing process. The question next arises as to how this surface concentration can occur during an isothermal treatment. Such surface enrichment of boron must occur through the phenomenon of surface adsorption, i.e., the concentration of solute atoms in solid solution in the vicinity of the surface without precipitation. A solute atom will tend to concentrate at the grain boundary if it reduces the interfacial tension. The possibility of adsorption effects involving both boron and carbon in iron has been discussed.' "Friction fatigue is the loss of soil-pile friction around the shaft area of the pile. It has been observed during impact driving of piles, and has been modelled to a limited degree using physical scale models. This paper proposes the use of high strain dynamic pile testing to assess and quantify friction fatigue in impact driven piles. The method is applied to two case studies: one on a project off the north-west coast of Australia and one on a South Pacific Island. On both sites calcareous sand layers are present. Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) monitoring has been conducted during impact driving of steel piles, which allowed for assessment of shaft resistance development both with depth and with progressive driving, by use of wave equation signal matching. Lessons are drawn from the case studies to improve future observations.INTRODUCTIONFriction fatigue is the loss of soil-pile friction around the shaft area of the pile, under cyclic loading or during pile driving. The phenomenon has been frequently observed in some non-silica sands, such as pumice sands and calcareous sands and has been the subject of academic study.The occurrence of friction fatigue impacts the driving behaviour of piles and the shaft friction component of the ultimate geotechnical strength (Rd,ug). If potential friction fatigue is not recognised in the design phase of a project, required pile toe levels can be significantly underestimated. This could lead to extra cost and delays, or, if no adequate pile verification is conducted, to geotechnical failure or underperformance of piles. This is especially true in remote locations, such as Pacific islands, where calcareous material is often present.A better understanding of the phenomenon would aid both pile design and driveability assessment. This paper proposes the use of high strain dynamic pile testing to assess and quantify the effect of friction fatigue from impact driving. Two case studies are presented in which high strain dynamic testing has been conducted on driven piles in calcareous sands to illustrate the method.BACKGROUNDFriction fatigueThe geotechnical strength of piles is composed of the resistance to static loading by the base of the pile and the shear resistance between the shaft of the pile and the adjacent soil. The latter is often referred to as the shaft resistance or shaft friction.During impact pile driving, a decrease in shaft resistance is often observed. Although this phenomenon is also observed during vibratory pile installation, this paper deals predominantly with impact driving. This decrease in material strength from the tip of the pile influences the shaft resistance and may be either temporary or permanent. Temporary reduction in shaft resistance is common in cohesive soils and is thought to be caused by excess pore water pressure, which has insufficient time to dissipate. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as set up, is observed to a significantly lesser extent in non-cohesive materials such as clean sands (Rausche et al., 2004)."

"A numerical conditioning analysis for mineral recovery estimation was performed for industrial flotation plants, considering the copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo) and iron (Fe) separability. A modified relative condition number, ?, was presented that allowed sensitivity analysis to be evaluated for the component recovery by means of an analytical formula. This closed form made it possible for the error propagation to be determined from feed, concentrate and tail grades with different orders of magnitude. The ? parameter can be evaluated using available grade data from the design criteria or historical mass balances, in which the variability is typically unknown. Reconciled data from different Cu/Mo concentrators were employed to evaluate the effect of small numerical disturbances in the grade data on the mineral recovery estimation. Higher error propagation was typically observed for Fe. The Mo minerals presented numerical problems, mainly in second cleaners and in the first cell of rougher banks. Lower condition numbers were observed for Cu due to the higher flotation rates.Mass-balance data reconciliation without redundancy was evaluated for a typical Cu/Mo flotation circuit using relative error minimization. Significant relative errors in the mineral recovery estimation were obtained with nonreconciled data in ill-conditioned problems. Negligible improvements in the mineral recovery estimation because of the data reconciliation with regard to the nonreconciled approach were obtained in well-conditioned problems. In addition, the improvements in mineral recovery estimation by using Cu, Mo and Fe in the data reconciliation were nonsignificant with respect to using only the best-conditioned component in well- and ill-conditioned problems.Despite the effort in data reconciliation and data repetition, poor performance may be obtained in ill-conditioned problems, which can deteriorate the flotation rate characterization. The error propagation has a negative impact on the mineral recovery of the first cell, which may significantly bias the flotation rate characterization of both valuable and nonvaluable elements.IntroductionMass balances have been extensively used in flotation processes to determine the mass flowrates (production) and mineral recovery (efficiency) of valuable minerals. Simple relationships for steadystate processes based on the feed, concentrate and tail grades can be obtained by taking a black-box approach. However, the calculation of concentrate flowrates from different components of the system, such as size fractions, chemical elements or minerals, does not satisfy the mass-conservation principle because of measurement errors (Smith and Ichiyen, 1973; Romagnoli and Sánchez, 2000). Mass-balance data reconciliation allows for obtaining a unique solution that satisfies the total and component mass balances, making small adjustments to the process data and taking advantage of the information redundancy (Narasimhan and Jordache, 2000). This methodology, which is based on a constrained weighted least-squares minimization, has proved to be robust when measurement errors are normally distributed, in the absence of gross errors.Commercial software has been developed to conduct massbalance data reconciliation in flotation processes, including MATBAL (Algosys, 2002), BILMAT (Algosys, 2013), JKMultibal (JKTech, 2013), BILCO (Caspeo, 2013) and HSC Chemistry (Outotec, 2013), which accomplish the reconciliation using known data accuracy in the optimization problem. The data accuracy can be obtained by sampling a stream n times in a run, known as repeats, each with independent chemical assays. Some unmeasured variables can be estimated using the measuring redundancy and sensor location. At present, grade and flow rate sensors may be incorporated in flotation to conduct real-time mass balances. During the year 1945, the total number of wells drilled in Ohio, including the. non¬productive wells, was 1034. For the 10-year period ending with 1945, the average completions per year were 1125, the least number being 910 in 1938, and the maximum 1561 in 1941. The proportion of dry holes in 1945 was 37 per cent?about the same as for the year 1944 but exceeding the 10-year average, which was 34 per cent. The number of oil wells completed exceeded the number drilled in 1944 by about 30 per cent, the average initial per well being the same in both years. Gas-well completions were approximately 10 per Cent less than in 1944, with the average initial per well about 5 per cent greater. The difference in number of oil and gas wells in the two years was in Berea and Clinton completions, as the number of oil wells increased about 30 per cent, owing to greater activity in the two sands named, while the number of gas wells decreased because of fewer completions therein.

A growing demand within the minerals industry for sustainable development and the introduction of carbon taxes have resulted in a significant focus on improving the energy efficiency of comminution circuits. However, in this drive for improved energy efficiency the role of classification has been overlooked. Inefficient classification and large recirculating loads reduce circuit capacity, result in over-grinding and higher specific energy consumption.It is well understood that classification increases mill capacity; therefore, closed ball mill-cyclone circuits have become an industry standard. However, due to limitations in cyclone classification efficiency, the optimum recirculating load is limited to about 250 per cent. A simple relationship quantifying the effect of classification efficiency and recirculating load on grinding circuit capacity is presented in this paper. The possibility of improving the capacity of ball mill circuits by improving classification efficiency is discussed, considering the current practical limitations of classification equipment. Simulation tools were used to evaluate circuits with cyclones and with high frequency screens to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency. Microcomputer analysis has long been a technique for engineering professionals to improve the theoretical and practical design of continuous mining systems. Such work has been typically composed of modeling observed events and then introducing a variety of known elements with predicted results to compare against the results of the model. Programs written in BASIC, Cobol, Fortran, or other language dominated such efforts. These programs have taken years to develop and prove out. This paper explores a new management tool used at TMC on a daily basis to track and improve continuous mining systems through the use of microcomputers and Lotus 1-2-3 software. By analyzing data provided by section foreman, shift foreman, and maintenance personnel against predetermined goals, new production targets are developed, weaknesses in the current mining systems are identified, and the results of changes are measured. The results of this system on the productive output of TMC systems are on the order of ten percent improvement.

"AbstractAt the end of May, 1950, Imperial Oil, Limited, had completed a total of 192 D-3 wells in the Leduc-Woodbend field, 62 of which lost circulation in the D-3 zone for periods ranging from two hours to fifty days. The majority of the remaining wells •lost some mud without actual loss of returns. In addition, independent operators completed 69 D-3 wells, of which 9 lost circulation. Included among the latter is the now well known Atlantic No. 3 well, which blew wild out of control for seven months. The well was finally brought under control through two directionally drilled wells, but not before the derrick fell and the well caught fire. Practically all known filler materials have been used in attempt3 to prevent or regain loss of circulation, but none has been successful, except in minor cases. Ordinary sawdust has come to be the most commonly used filler material and is added to the mud before the D-3 zone is contacted. In cases of serious loss of circulation, the on1y successful method of getting returns has been the use of a series of small cement plugs.IntroductionThe Leduc field is twenty miles southwest of Edmonton, Alberta. Geologically, it is on the east limb of the Alberta syncline, in the homoclinal belt. The main productive zones are in the Upper Devonian formation and are known locally as the D-2 zone and D-3 zone, respectively (see Figure 1).The D-3 zone is a dolomitized reef with fair average porosity and permeability, and shows considerable evidence of vertical fracturing. Porosity is mainly due to moderately uniform development of vugs which are interconnected by small crevices. However, the formation is known to be, locally, extremely vuggy and in places cavernous. These latter conditions create very serious drilling problems due to the hazard of loss of circulation, particularly in the gas cap, which has a maximum thickness of 200 feet. The D-3 zone is contacted at an average depth of 5,300 feet."

"Following the depletion of nickel sulfide ores, laterites are considered as one of the main sources for producing nickel and cobalt. One of the primary steps in pyrometallurgical extraction of nickel from laterites involves partial reduction of the ore at temperatures below 1000°C. Studying the kinetics of laterite reduction provides valuable information on reducibility of nickel laterites using coal as a reductant. The present study investigates the reduction behavior of a nickel laterite by thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Non-isothermal reduction tests and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed to find the main reactions that occur during the process. The kinetic parameters were calculated by Coats-Redfern method. The general model of simple reaction f(a)=(1-a)n was used for calculating kinetic parameters.INTRODUCTION Nickel (Ni) naturally occurs in the form of sulfide and laterite ores. Laterite ores are mainly available in tropical regions. Weathering phenomena during millions of years has led to the formation of several layers with specific mineralogy (Butt & Cluzel, 2013). The three main layers downward are limonite, smectite, and saprolite (Crundwell et al., 2011). Although laterites are the most available nickel ore resource (70%), their share in the overall Ni production is limited to 40% (Crundwell et al., 2011). The main reasons for not materializing the full potential of laterites are as follows (Ray et al., 1985): •,Laterite ores contain high water content (free and combined) which in turn results in high energy consumption of the extraction process. •,As Ni is present in the form of solid solution in laterites, physical upgrading methods such as flotation are not effective in increasing the Ni content before the extraction process. •,Extracting Ni from sulfide ores involve exothermic reactions which are beneficial due to decreasing the overall energy requirement of the process, however there is not efficient release of energy in the process of extracting Ni from laterite ores."

The campaign life of an industrial metallurgical vessels strongly relies on the quality and quantity of the refractory lining. An operating furnace or converter refractory lining can be assessed either by thermal modeling or by acousto ultrasonic-echo (AU-E) technique or a combination. AU-E is a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) stress wave propagation technique that has been utilized on a wide variety of smelting vessels for over 12 years with good success. AU-E can determine the thickness of remaining refractory lining, estimate the thickness of build-up or accretion, detect and locate metal penetration and impregnation into the lining, and identify hydrated or cracked areas of refractory. This paper details the AU-E principles, equipment and recent improvements to the data analysis to further improve speed and accuracy. In addition, the paper discusses the AU-E accuracy and limitations through a diverse and vast array of practical examples including a comparison with thermal modeling and physical measurements.

During Hurricane Harvey over 60% of the 39 WWTPs, including the low-lying 25 MGD Sims North WWTP, and one third of the 382 lift stations owned and operated by the City of Houston were flooded resulting in extensive facility damage, loss of service and uncontrolled release of untreated wastewater into bayous and creeks. In response, the City has embarked on an effort to improve system resiliency by consolidating at-risk facilities with a network of deep sewer tunnels. These tunnels will provide secondary benefits to the collection system of augmenting the capacity of the existing 6,000 miles of sewer mains and lowering the collection system profile in poor performing areas. Investigations on the cost to mitigate the flood damages by raising the liquid stream processes at the Sims North WWTP is estimated at nearly $450 million. Instead of spending $450 million to raise the plant, the funds will be directed to providing a more robust and resilient wastewater system for the Sims basin area of Houston. The backbone of this new system is a 4.5-mile-long, 110 inch diameter deep gravity sewer tunnel that will convert a system heavily reliant on distributed lift stations to a majority gravity system with a deep consolidated lift station at the Sims South WWTP. This will also allow the City to address the flood prone infrastructure at Sims North and consolidate its operations into a single permitted outfall for this collection system. This approach is the outcome of a team effort focused on maximizing system resiliency and sustainability for the next 100 years. By thinking outside the box, the City of Houston will not only mitigate the flooding risk at Sims North WWTP, but also solve regulatory and operational challenges throughout the sewershed and deliver a winwin on multiple levels.

Since the annual meeting held in February, 1917, when the Woman's Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E., was formed, the work of organization, which of necessity must be slow, has steadily gone forward. Under the Chairmanship of Mrs. C. C. Burger of the Welfare Committee, three active sub-committees have been formed: that of Americanization; under Mrs. Levi Holbrook, who is eminently fitted for such a position, by her active and valuable work in a number of the fine patriotic societies of our country; the Belgian Relief Committee, under Mrs. Henry H. Knox, which has clone phenomenal work in the three months of its existence, and whose report is later given in detail; and the Emergency Committee under Mrs. Herman A. Prosser, which has a fund already established, and is. in close touch with Major Arthur S. Dwight, ready to act when necessity arises. The officers of the Auxiliary feel more than gratified at the response so far received, and in a later issue will print extracts from letters, if permission can be gotten from the writers, showing the interest and enthusiasm that have beer aroused by the formation of a Woman's Auxiliary. Answers have even come from far Korea "the hermit nation," from Australia, from South America, showing what a bond of sympathy and, helpfulness is in process of growth. It is our sad duty to announce the death of our Treasurer, Mrs. George D. Baryon, who, from the very inception of our plan to organize, was an inspiring and valuable co-worker. Her place will be difficult to fill. Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight is Acting Treasurer at present. The Auxiliary wishes to express its heartiest thanks to Mr. Stoughton, the genial and efficient Secretary of the A. I. M. The increasing need for alternative energy sources as well as the less clearly perceived but equally increasing demand for non-fuel minerals has resulted in extensive exploitation of near surface deposits. Many such deposits have depleted reserves and mining corporations are increasingly turning their attention to deposits, with thicker overburden, less competent materials, steeper dips and more complex structure. These deposits pose mine layout, geotechnical and equipment problems as well as the need for large outputs to achieve economies of scale. The paper describes the major problems and operational solutions for such deposits using continuous excavation and transport equipment.

Uranium is conventionally extracted using a process that employs strong acid (H2SO4) and an oxidant (MnO2) as leaching agents. This method often creates environmental problems, requires large amounts of energy, and involves a complex operational plant. It is not, however, economically attractive to extract uranium from low-grade ores by chemical leaching. Because the content of U3O8 in the Indian ore is usually below 0.1% by weight, it is necessary to develop an alternative process to enable the efficient and economic recovery of uranium. Uranium ore from the Narwapahar mines, UCIL is a type of vein deposit found in India, which accounts for ~54% in India. The ore (0.047% U3O8), though of Singhbhum area, possess exceptionally different mineralogy due to presence of some refractory minerals and richness of apatite (5%) resulting in a maximum 78% recovery through conventional processing at UCIL, with a very high consumption of sulfuric acid and pyrolusite, besides possible loss of uranium as uranium phosphate. To avoid usage of environmentally non-benign oxidants, remediation of influence of phosphates, and improve the overall process output of uranium; an alternate extraction technology using microbial isolate(s) is worthwhile exploring and the same is presented in the paper. The microbial isolate enriched with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans grown from source mine water was employed for bio-leaching of uranium while varying pH, pulp density (PD), particle size, etc. On varying pH at 35oC using 20%(w/v) PD and <75µm particle size, 83.5% and 78% uranium bio-recovery were observed at 1.7 and 2.0 pH in 40 days against maximum recovery of 46% and 41% metal in control experiments respectively. Whereas, it was observed that grinding of ore to finer size actually helped dissolution of uranium. Finer size particles (<45µm) gave a maximum biorecovery of 93% in 40days at 10%(w/v) PD, 1.7 pH and 35oC. The bio-recovery of uranium fell down from 93% to 82.73% and 60% on increasing the pulp density from 10% to 20% and 30% respectively for particles of <45µm size. The higher uranium dissolution during bioleaching at 1.7pH can be correlated with increase in redox potential from 433 mV to 664mV in 40 days.

Nitro-glycerine is produced by the action of nitric and sulphuric acids on glycerine, and is a heavy liquid of oily appearance, of specific gravity about 1•6, varying from colourless when quite pure to a yellow or brownish yellow. It is of a very sweet taste, and without odour, and is an active poison. Mere handling of it will in most persons induce sickness and headache. It explodes when heated to about 360° F. or from shock, but in small quantities it ignites and burns with some difficulty by the mere contact of flame.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,300 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.4 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. Based on the characteristics of the ore bodies, the deposits are divided into several mining zones. The geotechnical properties of mining zones are also different from one zone to another. A successful geotechnical collection system is very important for the mining designs and operations in the Leeville underground mine.

Introduction If a subject this broad were to be covered in even moderate detail, it would require a set of books about the size of an encyclopedia. Since an acceptable length for this paper is a small fraction of one book, it will have to consist of a few samples of the subjects that I think are the most pertinent to World Fossil Fuel Economics. I plan to discuss the trends in world energy demand, particularly in the U. S. and Europe; the consumption patterns and cost patterns of oil, gas and coal; the prospects of synthetics; and some of the effects of government regulation of fuel economics. World Energy Demands Fig. 1 shows Free World energy consumption by principal areas for the period from 1950 to 1970 and a forecast for the period from 1970 to 1985. These figures include only the measurable forms of energy. An example of energy consumption that is not measured is the wood a peasant might cut in the forest and bum in a fireplace to heat his home. This omission probably is a very small part of the total. This forecast is not identical with that of Wayne E. Glenn (see Page 22), but the differences in total energy consumption are not significant. The U. S. consumption, which was 55 percent of the world total in 1950, had declined to 45 percent by 1970, and is expected to decline further to 38 percent by 1985. Western Europe has consumed 28 percent of the total from 1950 to 1970 and is expected to lose share slightly between 1970 and 1985. The most spectacular gainer is Japan, which increased consumption from 2.5 percent in 1950 to 7.5 percent in 1970, and is expected to reach nearly 17 percent by 1985. The over-all Free World total has grown from 62 quadrillion Btu (equivalent to 29 million B/D of crude oil) in 1950 to 151 quadrillion by 1970, an average growth rate of 4.5 percent/year. This total is expected to grow at a rate of 5 percent/year between now and 1985, reaching 315 quadrillion Btu (equivalent to nearly 150 million B/D). Fig. 2 shows which fuels supplied this energy between 1950 and 1970, and gives an estimate of how it will be supplied between 1970 and 1985.

Borehole (slurry) mining, where a tool incorporating a water-jet cutter and a downhole slurry pump mines phosphate through a borehole, was field tested in northeastern Florida as part of a US Bureau of Mines program to increase the domestic availability of critical minerals. About 1.5 kt (1700 st) of phosphate ore were mined at 23.6 t/h (26 stph) from a depth of 76 m (250 ft). The borehole was filled with water during mining for roof support and to assist slurry pumping. Underwater cutting was enhanced with an air-shrouded water jet. Mined cavities were backfilled to prevent subsidence after abandonment. Roof subsidence during mining was avoided only when the cavity was filled with water. Environmental monitoring before, during, and after mining included hydrological studies and measurements of water quality. Significant water quality changes occurred only in the zone being mined and were confined to the immediate area of the borehole.

The Galatia Mine is a dual-seam underground coal mine located in Saline County, IL. In 1984, it became the first coal mine to be permitted by the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals to operate diesel equipment underground. And it is one of the larger underground coal mines in the nation to use diesel equipment. From the beginning, Kerr-McGee determined that diesel equipment offered the best approach to the safe and productive development and operation of the Galatia Mine. The flexibility of this equipment and its ability to promptly respond to changing conditions and mining locations made its use desirable for building this large dual-seam coal mine. The mine had a planned nominal annual capacity of 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) and would employ more than 500 people. Galatia&apos;s current reserves are estimated at 231 Mt (255 million st) of recoverable coal from two seams of high-quality, high-volatile bituminous coal. The Harrisburg No. 5 seam is shipped primarily as a low-sulfur steam coal or as a metallurgical blend stock. It is also used in the pulverized coal injection (PCI) process for steel making. The Herrin No. 6 seam is a medium-sulfur coal. Annual production is shown in Fig. 1. A good indicator of a mine&apos;s success is employee productivity improvement. For many reasons - the proper use of diesel equipment, the introduction of longwalls and increased employee ex¬perience - Galatia employees have achieved a steady growth in annual productivity (Fig. 1) while maintaining an exceptional safety record.

Cast-in-place piling are a staple of the deep foundation industry, and are used (in various forms) worldwide. In assessing the application of cast-in-place piles, it is of value to reflect on the development of the various systems, in order to understand how the current processes and equipment came to be. This paper traces the evolution of the cast-in-place industry. Emphasis is on developments in the United States; however, since there has been a substantial fusion of US and European processes, notable European developments are also discussed.

We are the voice of those who use, transport, store, manufacture, and dispose of commercial explosives products and others that serve the end user of explosives products. Along with other associations in this industry, we have a combined membership of hundreds of companies and tens of thousands of individuals in the U.S. and around the globe.
