This paper presents the results of a detailed geotechnical study on the potential multiple seam interaction between the No. 2 Gas (upper) and the Powellton seams, which are separated by an average interburden of 45 ft. The interburden consists of 4 ft of clay shale below the No. 2 Gas seam, 38 ft of massive sandstone, and 3 ft of shale above the Powellton seam. The No. 2 Gas seam was mined about 60 years ago, and many water-pooled areas were projected to be present. The deepest overburden over the No. 2 Gas seam is about 750 ft. To evaluate the potential interaction between the two mine works and to determine the pillar safety factor, Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS) software was initially used to determine pillar dimensions to obtain a minimum safety factor of 2.0 for areas under pooled water, as well as a minimum safety factor of 1.5 for areas not under pooled water. Furthermore, to assess the quality of the interburden rock strata, two surface core holes were drilled, and rock cores were tested in the laboratory for their strength and elastic moduli. Using the experimentally determined strengths and moduli as part of the input parameters, the RocScience Phase2 finite element program was employed to model the stress field scenarios and estimate the safety factors of the interburden rock strata before and after Powellton seam mining. The pillar safety factors derived from the Phase2 analysis were in excellent agreement with those obtained from the AMSS analysis. Phase2 results also predicted that the effect of the Powellton seam mining, first mining only, would reach a maximum of 19 ft above the Powellton seam, which led to the proposal of drilling 25-ft deep test holes to detect water, instead of the 45-ft deep test holes mandated by MSHA. The proposed test-hole height was accepted by both Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) District 4 and the state of West Virginia. Mining of the Powellton coal seam commenced in February 2011 and continued for eight months. To date, no 25-ft deep hole has encountered water under the water-pooled zone, which validates the RocScience Phase2 finite element analysis. Also, inmine observation of excellent pillar stability and roof condition confirms the validity of the AMSS analysis.

INDUSTRIAL Pittsburgh, the center of the coal and iron and steel industry of the world, was host to the Coal Division at its Fall Meeting held there on Oct. 21 and 22 at the William Penn Hotel. The past year has witnessed remarkable progress in new methods of mining and burning of coal and many of the papers on the program discussed these developments. Nearly 100 had registered at the time of the first session on Wednesday morning and this number increased to 168 on Thursday. Owing to the large number of papers on the program, eighteen in all, it was necessary to hold group meetings on Thursday morning, with a capacity attendance at each meeting. . Chairman McAuliffe was on hand early Wednesday morning to open the meeting. George Otis Smith, representing President Lovejoy, came over from Cleveland where he attended the meetings of the Institute of Metals Division. Secretary Parsons arrived later from Cleveland and spent the whole morning with the executive committee of the Division. Doctor Smith, Secretary Parsons, and J. T. Breunich were the official representatives from Institute headquarters.

Much of our knowledge of the behaviour of underground coal dust explosions has been derived from less than full-scale experimental explosions in facilities as small as 0.25 m diameter pipes. Although a substantial body of research has been undertaken in larger galleries approaching the size of full-scale modern mine roadways, there are still questions regarding the scaling of results to full-sized roadways in modern coalmines. Questions also surround the issue of comparing or scaling results between smooth and rough walled galleries, round and rectangular galleries and galleries with differing wall thermal properties due to different materials of construction.This paper will examine the influence of gallery size, cross-section area and wall roughness and thermal properties upon the characteristics of a coal dust explosion. Data from past explosion research will be examined and assessed for its application to the problem along with theoretical considerations for these factors.Recommendations on the design and minimum appropriate size of explosion galleries for assessing the performance of explosion inerting strategies, passive and active explosion barrier performance and determination of appropriate pressure ratings for ventilation structures will be made.CITATION:Humphreys, D, Collecutt, G, Greenwood, J and O’Beirne, T, 2015. "THE FIRST COMMENTATOR that I will call on is Mr. W. G. (Bill) Brissenden, Vice-President, Mines, Noranda Mines Ltd. Bill, would you care to comment.W. G. BRISSENDEN ...Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I spent some time reading the four papers that were presented here, yesterday evening, and decided that the four to six minutes that I had been allotted for this afternoon were going to be pretty tough to meet. It's a very big subject and I just hope that I will be able to stay within my time limit. As has been so aptly demonstrated by the members of our panel here this afternoon young men in growing numbers continue to be attracted to careers in the mineral industry, especially to careers in mining engineering. Now from 80 the point of view that the profession may have regained its status this is indeed welcome news. However, perhaps all of the members seem to have the suspicion that the number of mining engineers that the industry can absorb is a much lower figure than previously forecast. It is said that technical school graduates are now occupying some of the jobs once considered the private preserve of the mining engineer and also that mining engineering undergraduates are having trouble locating summer employment. If these interpretations of mine are correct then we are now confronted not only with our old dilemma - whither the mining engineer - but also with an urgent need to solve it. We cannot allow our profession to become once again an undesirable one in the eyes of our youth because if we permit such a thing to happen a second time the profession may never recover."

NUMEROUS papers have been published on the use of graphic methods to determine the best curve to be used in estimating the production decline of oil wells but, as far as the writer has been able to ascertain, nothing has been published dealing directly with the subject as to how curves may be worked out mathematically, which will conform most closely to the production data under consideration in any given instance; hence the writer has endeavored to show by means of a few concrete examples just how such appli-cation can be made. Among valuation engineers, two types of curves are in current use for the representation of the decline in production of oil wells. One may be represented by the equation, y = krx, sometimes known as a percentage curve, for the reason that the production for any period is multiplied by a constant rate or percentage to obtain the production for the succeeding period. This curve appears as a straight line on semi-logarithmic cross-section paper. The other curve may be represented by the equation, y = kxn, and is shown as a straight line on logarithmic cross-section paper. In each of these equations, y represents the number of barrels produced over a given period of time, and x the successive periods of time. The other letters are constants to be determined for each well or group of wells considered in arriving at the most probable curve to represent the rate of production for a given property; from which the underground reserves may be estimated by extrapolation, or the extending of the curve beyond the last known period of production to show the most probable production values for the future.

The determination of moisture in coal is an empirical test, because the time, temperature, and equipment are specified. The essential features of the equipment and details of the procedure are given in A.S.T.M. Designation: D271-44.:2. According to the specifications, the following features should be incorporated in the equipment used: 1. Oven must have uniform temperature in all parts. 2. Oven must be constructed with minimum of air space. 3. Oven must have means of changing the air two to four times per minute. 4. Air must be dried over sulfuric acid (sp. f-7. 1.84). The analytical procedures governing most of the nation's coal purchases are those given in A.S.T.M. Standards referred to above. These standards are general arid of such scope as to cover all ranks and types of coal. In cases where only the moisture is required, a faster method than the standard procedure is desired.

Hydrocyclone separators are some of the most widely used instruments in a variety of industrial applications. Their major functions are to sort, classify and separate solid particles and liquid droplets within a multiphase flow system. Research studies employing both experimental and numerical methods recognize that the performance of a cyclone is related to its geometric dimensions as well as the inner flow pattern. Although many successes have been achieved over the past years, the majority of investigations only focused on the simplified design of cyclone geometry and on single-phase flow. Therefore, this study set out to investigate the flow field in a new-design hydrocyclone and used particle image velocimetry (PIV) to explore the complex swirling flow behavior inside the cyclone within an air core. The flow field inside the cyclone was also studied by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation using a commercial CFD package. Different turbulent models were tested in this study with a moderate-size mesh, and the interface of liquid phase and air phase was predicted by the volume of fluid (VOF) model.

HE addition of rhenium to molybdenum is known to produce alloys with good workability.&apos; Lawley and Maddin found that the critical stress for twinning in this system was lowered by the addition of 35 pct Re, which suggests that twinning may re- place the usual slip operation as the major element of deformation. The twinning elements in bcc Mo-Re alloys have been reported as the (112) planes and the <111> directions.3 This note represents the continuation of this investigation, in which the authors found that the occurrence of twinning promotes the formation of a bcc tetragonal phase, previously identified as u by Greenfield and Beck.4 Specimens of Mo-35 pct Re alloy, prepared as described previusly, were solution annealed at 2400o, cooled to room temperature, and plastically deformed by compression to induce twinning. After subsequent aging for 8 hr at 1300°C, traces of a were observed along the grain boundaries and at the interfaces between the twins and the matrix, Fig. 1. With increased aging time the cr phase grew into larger clusters and finally occupied the entire twinned area, Fig. 2. Experiments also indicated that if twinning did not precede aging, there was no visible evidence of a in the microstructure.

It is believed that sulfur and volatile matter con-tents in coals are the main intrinsic properties to cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal&apos;s self-heating should be quantified. This study is aimed to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying the coal&apos;s propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model&apos;s ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture contents in the coal three important factors affecting the coal&apos;s self-heating process. Sulfur exists in coal primarily in the form of pyrite which will be oxidized rapidly under suitable conditions. Volatile matters, higher in low rank coals, are more easily to be oxidized. Heat of water condensation provides initial energy for low temperature oxidation. Heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built in the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature on pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are validated with the adiabatic testing data respectively.

"The most important factor in Canadian mining is not the operating cost of current projects but the availability of capital for future projects. The future of mining at depth will be producing ore from the top of the orebody working downward with very effective, tightly controlled mining methods, i.e. either selective mining or bulk mining with well controlled dilution and fragmentation. The key characteristics of future mines will be smaller access excavations, more effective ground support, very precise blasting techniques and more efficient and reliable materials handling systems. Equipment will be smaller and designed for high efficiency and low maintenance, reducing both the capital and operating cost. This means there will be fewer scoops, more continuous mucking machines and conveyor belts, both lateral and vertical.Orepass failures have become accepted and the resultant redevelopment and retramming has become common. The capital investment in so-called permanent ore passes and crusher stations becomes questionable, particularly when crushers are only necessary for less than 10% of the ore going through the system. The best way to solve the chronic instability of ore passes is, as with all of the stability problems at depth, by reducing the excavation size rather than increasing ground support. Smaller access drifts would reduce the capital cost and increase the rate of development as well as reduce the amount of waste to be handled, reducing the ground support and the ventilation requirements. Large drifts and ore passes are essential only for the equipment needed to handle large pieces of ore and the productivity of scoops is very expensive when the requirements for ventilation and large access drifts are taken into account. The key issue is the fragmentation generated by primary blasting.The future of mining in Canada will depend on simple and robust technology geared to the environment in which it will have to operate. Its survival will depend on some-thing much more fundamental and difficult to accomplish than a technological advance — it will require a dramatic change in the way the mining process is managed, how work is organized, how effort is rewarded and how costs are measured — a complete change in mind-set."

This paper presents the results of a review of historic blast design practices at the Dragon Products Company, LLC (Dragon) Quarry Operation, along with the results of two different blast design vibration monitoring programs. A blast pattern design modification was initiated to determine if production volume per shot could be increased and highwall instability could be decreased. A vibration monitoring program was undertaken to investigate peak particle velocity (PPV) and relate the data to the blastability of the jointed onsite rock mass, utilizing the relationship between PPV and dynamic stress and strain. The Dragon Quarry Operation has historically used a 6-in. diameter, 14-ft by 14-ft production blast pattern, with blast holes loaded manually using cartridge style explosive products. In 2011, Quarry Operations introduced a 6-in diameter, 16-ft by 16-ft production blasting pattern, using pre-mixed, truck-loaded, bulk emulsion/ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) blends. This paper summarizes the results of the blast design modifications, the results of the vibration monitoring data, and describes how production blasting and excavation at the Dragon Quarry has benefited from such modifications.

The Chelopech Mine, located in Central Bulgaria, is one of Europe?s largest underground copper- gold mines, currently mines and processes approximately one million tonnes of ore per year. Copper concentrates containing gold and silver with significant arsenic content are produced and sold on the world markets. The operation was acquired by Dundee Precious Metals in 2003. A modernization program for the Mine and Plant has since been in progress to increase both production and mechanical reliability, and also to optimize metallurgical recoveries. Since then, mine output and plant throughput have doubled, plant availabilities and utilization have increased significantly, and overall metallurgical performance for copper and gold improved. The paper presents the systematic approach for obtaining and analyzing data, communicating it, and making suggestions for changes to the technological parameters and flowsheet in order to maximize metal recoveries. These studies have correlated the ore characteristics (particle size distributions, metal assays, and Cu and Au mineralogical and phase analyses) with the actual plant performance (kinetics, recoveries, and throughput). Cu recovery by size has been calculated from the mineralogical analyses of feed, concentrate and tails, with the most significant losses being identified in terms of fraction and phase recoveries. This has provided the recommendations (some of them tested in plant) for changes in the grinding and flotation circuits.

Sumitomo Metal Mining Company has been operating Waelz Kiln at the Shisaka Works for 12 years to recover zinc and lead from electric arc furnace (EAF) dust. To increase the capacity and cut down the operating cost, some improvements have been carried out resulting in the capacity of 60,000 t/ y of EAF dust as compared with 32,000 t/ y in 1977. The current capacity is equivalent to 20% or EAF dust generated in Japan. The number of workers has been decreased by the introduction of an automatic control system, and the productivity per worker is now twice as much as 10 years ago. This paper will describe the progress of the operation at the Shisaka Works after the previous? paper reported in "Zinc&apos; 8 5? and summarize the status or EAF dust recycle in Japan.

New York City is a busy metropolis with 8 million people. New York has the largest public transportation system with 6 million riders a day throughout the subway system. Keeping this infrastructure in service is vital to the overall economy of the region. Hurricane Sandy proved to have a devastating impact on infrastructure in Metropolitan New York. New York City Transit is on the forefront to provide resiliency and maintain its facilities with the use of flood protection systems. This paper presents flood protection structures utilized at Hammels Wye substation site in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. The site is in close proximity and surrounded by water. The subsurface conditions consist of loose silts overlain by medium dense glacial sand. The high groundwater level combined with limited access to the site presented challenges. A flood protection system consisting of flood walls was recommended for this site. In certain areas the flood walls consisted of retaining walls supported on micropiles. For other areas, the flood walls consisted of steel sheet piles with jet grout columns to reduce seepage below the walls. The effect of driving sheet piles with vibratory hammers on nearby existing structures is always a concern. Recently, hydraulic hammers with variable moment/frequency are being considered as a mean to reduce vibration effects during driving. In this project, an instrumentation testing program was performed to measure peak particle velocity during sheet pile driving utilizing the variable moment vibratory hammer. Plots of peak particle velocity versus frequency were generated. This paper will present the design aspects of the flood walls and construction challenges during installation. This will prove beneficial to engineers in both design and construction fields.

Introduction The apparent commonplace, and prosaic, nature of building-stones, lime, cement, gypsum, and clay products, and many other miscellaneous non-metallic minerals, such as abrasives, barite, diatomite, magnesite, mica, slate, salts, etc., and their everyday appearance and necessary in our lives, has removed much of the glamour, romance, and speculative attractiveness so frequently associated with our gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper mining ventures. However, it will be readily appreciated, with but a brief study of the thirty-five or more non-metallic minerals and products which are mined, prepared, or are known to occur, in British Columbia, that the &apos;industrial minerals&apos; industry in the Province has an abundance of interesting technical problems, is fraught with speculative possibilities, and, as such, fully deserves much more technical attention than it has hitherro received. The brief notes presented in this paper show, in summary form, the magnitude of the British Columbia industrial and non-metallic mineral industry; outline in synoptically form the principal deposits of non-metallic minerals presently known; and indicate in a general way a few of the possibilities which exist in the Province for the expansion of the industry. For convenience in presentation, the assembled material has been divided into four sections: 1.-Sraristical information 2.-Strucrural non-metallic minerals 3.-Miscellaneous non-metallic minerals 4.-Non-Metallic mineral possibilities in British Columbia 1. -Statistical Information The writer does not propose to dwell at length on the statistical comparisons and deductions which may be drawn from the four tables which have been compiled for this section of the paper, nor is it considered essential, as the figures present a most emphatic story in themselves.

THIS meeting was held at the home of the Institute in the United Engineering Society Building, 29. West 39th St., New York, N. Y., Feb. 18 to 21, 1908. The first session, held in the large auditorium Tuesday evening, Feb. 18, was called to order at 8 p.m. by Prof. Henry M. Howe, Past-President of the Institute, who welcomed the members and guests in a few cordial and well-chosen remarks. The following papers, accompanied by lantern-illustrations, were presented in oral abstract by their authors Swedenborg and Humboldt, by R. W. Raymond, New York, N. Y. Electric Power in Steel Mills, by David B. Rushmore and Karl A. Pauly, Syracuse, N. Y. At the close of the session, an informal reception in the offices of the Institute was tendered to members and guests. The second session, held in Assembly Room No. 1 in the same building, Wednesday, Feb. 19, was called to order at 10 a.m. by Prof. Robert H. Richards, Past-President of the Institute. Before proceeding with the papers on iron and steel, which were scheduled for presentation at this session, Mr. F. E. Junge, a representative of the gas-engine and electric motor industry of Berlin, Germany, gave a short oral discussion of the paper by Mr. Rushmore and Mr. Pauly, Electric Power in Steel Mills. Printed copies of the paper, Uniform Nomenclature of Iron and Steel, were distributed among the members and guests present, and the request was made for a later discussion of this important subject by letter. This paper constitutes the Report of Committee No. 24, of the International Association for Testing Materials, which was presented at the Brussels Congress in 1906. A brief introduction is made on the existence of sulphides in the top gas of the Midrex Shaft Furnace, giving consideration to the operation of the furnace and the liberation of sulphur as well as its consequential effects on the reduction process. The text shows a study of sulphur distribution in the pellet, emphasizing the importance of this distribution in relation to the liberation of sulphur during the reduction. A study was made to determine the sulphur compounds that exist in the pellets, showing ways of controlling the sulphur distribution and reducing its liberation?during the reduction.
