By 2045, carbon-neutral mines will be economically producing products that are vital for the world’s transition to renewable energy. After overcoming significant technical challenges (and the investment of significant capital), leaders have successfully eliminated the use of diesel and other fossil fuels by introducing a wide range of new decarbonisation technologies. These leaders will be reaping the benefits of lower production costs (resulting from elimination of diesel), stable and predictable operations, and easier access to capital for their future projects. This paper describes a future scenario of how a net zero carbon and zero-entry mine could operate by taking maximum advantage of technologies in development or already proven in other industries. Some miners have been unsuccessful in their efforts to reach decarbonisation targets. Instead, they have been forced to close or offload their assets to be acquired by operators with better sustainability credentials, or, in some cases, to indigenous or community-based enterprises with vested interest in making operations viable and sustainable. Regardless of ownership structure, all successful mining operations will have fostered strong and positive community relations that bring education, health, security and economic development opportunities to the communities while respecting their traditions, land-uses and culture. As shallow, easy to mine deposits have become scarce, the majority of new mines are underground. Advancements in electric underground technology and the feasibility of ‘zero entry mining’ (with no personnel in active mining zones) has made it increasingly possible to economically operate underground mines, even at shallow depths. The newest mines have a near zero footprint on the surface, produce no harmful by-products, and are employing in-place or in situ methods of extraction that are efficient and low impact. Surface land-uses, such as agriculture and renewable energy generation, continue in the immediate vicinity of the mine, with no significant ground disturbance, community impact or environmental footprint.

"WELFARE…Welfare endeavor in connection with both the metal and the coal mines of Utah has shown gratifying progress during recent years and both the operators and their employees are deserving of much credit for the efforts put forth to better living, working, educational and receational conditions in most of the mining camps of the state.In the older metal mining camps of Utah, where the towns are incorporated and independent of the mining properties operating in the vicinity, less opportunity is pre¬sented for the companies to exercise efforts looking towards improved welfare conditions than is the case of camps located on company ground and under the full control of operators.Even in such camps, however, as illustrated in Bingham, the companies can do much to better welfare conditions. In this camp the Utah Copper Company has spent $800,000 since 1 920 in the erection of modern brick cottages, apartment houses and the Gemmell Memorial Club. The cottages and apartments have every convenience to be found in up-to-date city homes. The Gemmell Memorial Club, erected and equipped at a cost of $1 75,000, was provided by the company for the benefit of the Utah Copper Company employees living in the canyon and has been made the recreational center for the camp."

What are future prospects for U.S. mining? In many quarters the assumption is made that this country has passed its zenith as a mineral producer -- that it is in a period of decline and that it is becoming a have-not nation like Japan and much of Western Europe. These industrial rivals of ours must depend almost entirely on others for their mineral supplies. In trying to answer this question one must of course distinguish between resources and productive capacity. In today's volatile and competitive markets, the definition of what are reserves and what are merely identified resources becomes ever more difficult. Many large deposits have been found that are unlikely to be viable in the marketplace under normal conditions but that can be of significance to the nation's military and industrial security in times of emergency. I should like to draw on personal experience from World War I1 for illustration. 4fter Pearl Harbor great concern developed over the availability of a long 1ist of strategic materials for which this country was largely dependent on imports. Included were a number of minerals of which domestic deposits had been identified. Among these were chromite, manganese ore, mercury, mica and tungsten.

In recent years, the utilisation of ultra-fine ore in ironmaking has gradually increased due to the depletion of high-quality iron ore. The use of ultra-fine ore in the ironmaking process is typically energy intensive and leads to high CO2 emissions. The improvement of sinter reducibility is one of the methods used to reduce the environmental impact of using fine ore.In this study, a high-strength and high-reducibility sinter manufacturing process was investigated by controlling the sintering reaction. The key technology used in this method is the manufacture of mini-pellets by selective granulation equipment. The mini-pellets consist of iron ore, limestone and burnt lime and are designed to melt at temperatures below 1200°C. The molar ratio of CaO to Fe2O3 of the mini-pellets is 0.25~0.75. The 2~5 mm diameter mini-pellets are manufactured with burnt lime as the binding material.During the sintering of mini-pellets, goethite, which has relatively high reducibility, should be retained as residual ore in the sinter cake. The strength of the sinter cake was kept by the bonding reaction of the mini-pellets, which have a low melting temperature. This is the main principle of the reaction-controlled sintering method.The reaction-controlled sintering method manufactures a high-strength and high-reducibility sinter cake and increases sinter productivity by around 15 per cent using ultra-fine iron ore.CITATION:Chung, B J and Ji, Y K, 2015. "Emission of industrial wastewater containing harmful oxoanions is one of the serious problems on account of its toxicity and the environmental pollution, especially caused by boric, phosphinic, arsenic and antimonic species. In this study, we developed a novel treatment technique of such polluted-water by hydrothermal mineralization. The treatment is “Geomimetic” method for precipitating oxoanions in aqueous media as natural ore resources by using hydrothermal treatment with calcium salts mineralizer. The treatment made it possible not only to detoxify the polluted-water, but also to recover the calcium minerals such as Ca2B2O5·H2O, Ca5(AsO4)3(OH), etc. Concentration of each ion in treated-water was lower than that of effluent standard in Japan. Moreover, the residual concentration of each ion was independent of the initial concentration, but it depends only on the solubility of the formed mineral under hydrothermal condition. Therefore, the hydrothermal treatment could be recommended as one of the treatment techniques of polluted-water.IntroductionVarious oxoanions such as boron and arsenic oxo-anions have high toxicity against human health and the environment. They are important resources, however, for plating or advanced material manufacturing industries[1-3], from which the wastewater containing these oxoanions is generated every day. An appropriate treatment is often required for industrial wastewaters to attain national effluent standards of Japan (NESJ, B: 10 mg/dm3, As: 0.1 mg/dm3). On the other hand, there is no production of arsenic and boric resources in Japan, and they are expected to be recycled. Therefore, the establishment of a system for the removal and recycling of arsenic and boron from wastewaters is of global significance.Several methods to remove them from aqueous media have been already reported by using adsorption[4], electro-coagulation[5], membrane separation[6-8] and biological techniques[9]. However, these methods have the following problems because of their stability in water. (1) Removal yield is low, especially for tri-valent arsenite ion (AsIIIO3 3-) and borate ion. (2) The applicable concentration range is narrow. In addition, the used adsorbents or collected residues after treatments are sill hazardous wastes, so that they must be treated by a proper method. But, it is very difficult to convert them to recyclable resources at most industrial plants. These problems are caused by the difficulty to recover these oxoanions as stable solid precipitates with low solubility in water. The establishment of recycling system of these hazardous compounds will be one of the world-important issues, especially, in Japan, which is poor in natural resources. On the other hand, compounds that contain high arsenic concentrations and are insoluble in water, are often found in natural minerals, for example, as haidinglite (Ca(AsO3OH)·(H2O) or Johnbaumite (Ca5(AsO4)3(OH)). This fact suggests that nature has an ability to produce insoluble As-bearing minerals. Similar phenomena can be found in case of boron, antimony, etc."

(written discussion *).-The matter of selective. mining is probably of more importance in Pennsylvania than is washing, and perhaps washing would not be necessary at some plants where now practised if proper care were taken in the mining. I have in mind one plant where the sulfur content of the entire bed is more than 2 per cent., yet if the bottom 12 in. and the top 12 or 15 in. are separated, the main portion of the bed, some 6 ft., will not contain more than 1.25 per cent. sulfur; and yet in this mine the entire bed .is worked together, the resultant coke, as a matter of course, not being fit for use in iron smelting. Not sufficient notice is taken of the "Double-thick" Upper Freeport coal in Allegheny and Butler counties. This is a very valuable deposit. Other areas where there is a, top member of the Upper Freeport coal are also known, which add to the value of this bed as a coking coal. This double Freeport coal is especially suited for byproduct coking. I cannot be as optimistic as regards the "low-sulfur" Pittsburgh coal in Greene county as the authors. Getting the best match between truck and haul road requires examination of many factors and their effect on the bottom line. Most mines use a bottom line measure based in some way on cost per ton of material moved. This measure focuses on the two components of truck haulage cost per ton: productivity (or performance) and operating cost. Productivity can be measured or predicted for specific tasks using either field measurement or modelling. Individual tasks can be combined to provide a larger scale, longer term net figure for total mine output. True cost is more difficult to capture as they are time and task oriented and can be influenced by a summation of factors over a truck lifetime. For example, "allocated" costs, such as owning (depreciation) and some repair costs, are spread over long periods of time. Other cost, such as fuel and tires can be tied more directly to certain tasks such as fuel and tire cost. This paper focuses on the more direct, task-oriented factors that affect truck productivity and cost.

Rietspruit is administered and managed by Rand Mines, the Mining division of Barlow Rand, transportation and marketing being the responsibility of Shell. The total saleable coal product, approximately 5,5 million tons per annum, is exported via Richards Bay.Presplitting and Throw BlastingPresplitting was initially introduced in September 1980, as a means of dewatering t he overburden and mid burden to facilitate the use of dry-mix explosives a s opposed to slurry explosives.The utilization of the throw blasting technique arose as a direct result of observed ground movement after the successful introduction of presplitting. The first trials commenced in March 1981 on the double-seam operation. The methods, economics and resulting advantages are fully described elsewhere. A brief description follows.Method of PresplittingAfter determining the desired presplit line, 250-mm holes are drilled to top of coal at 4-m to 6-m intervals, dependent on the competency of the rock overlying the coal. A single 60-kg charge of slurry explosives is located at the bottom of each hole, no tamping is used and all the holes are detonated simultaneously. The results are a competent, straight, vertical highwall. This enables accurate control of the first row of blast holes closest to the highwall, which is a prime requisite for successful throw blasting."

The chemical and thermal criteria used for predicting the spontaneous combustion hazard are briefly reviewed and data are presented to characterize the gas desorptions and self-heating tendencies of 29 U.S. coals. Closed vessel desorption experiments showed that CO, CO2, and CH4 are the main gases evolved and that the CO, CO/?O2 index, and 02 absorption rate increase with decreasing rank and increasing oxygen content of the coal. In this Bureau of Mines report, the effects of temperature, moisture, and other variables are discussed together with the application of the data to the complex conditions encountered in a mining environment. An important finding is that the presence of CO alone in a mine is not necessarily an indication of a self-heating reaction of the coal. Based upon experiments conducted in an adiabatic-type calorimeter, the self-heating temperatures of lignite and subbituminous coals can be as low as 30° C, whereas the bituminous coals require a temperature of about 60° C or more. The self-heating hazard is greatest when the coals are dried and exposed to a high humidity condition, apparently as a result of the "heat-of-wetting." Generally, the hazard is greatest with the western coals of the United States.

Carbonaceous refractory materials are widely accepted in many reducing smelting processes such as iron and ferroalloys. Oxidizing processes such as copper concentrate smelting traditionally use magnesia and/or alumina/silica refractory materials. The main objection to the use of carbon-based refractories as the exposed working lining in oxidizing applications is the potential for free oxygen to react with the carbon at high temperature, which could rapidly degrade the refractory lining. In 2013, Outotec and GrafTech conducted joint trials of a thermally conductive, carbonaceous lining for smelting copper concentrates in the Outotec® pilot-scale top-submerged-lance (TSL) furnace in Dandenong, Australia. This testwork had two equally important goals; to demonstrate the ability of carbon refractories to withstand oxidizing process conditions, while ensuring that neither furnace operating conditions nor process stability were negatively affected by the refractory material. The paper discusses the input parameters of the trials, key observations during the testwork program, and the results and conclusions from both process and refractory design standpoints.

Traditionally, the implementation of an automated control for a ball mill has been a challenging one. First, it must be capable of processing a variable SAG mill feed while at the same time avoiding to become a process bottle neck. Second thing is, it must deliver an adequate quality product (P80) to the process downstream. Then the ball mill itself and its associated classification equipment has problems of its own: it must maintain adequate control of cyclone?s pressure, density and pump-box level with often, less manipulated variables than needed, namely, variable pump speed and the opening/closing of cyclones. Thus, it becomes a non-linear multi-variable type of process with often too multiple and contradictory control objectives to satisfy simultaneously. On top of that, to extend cyclones availability and yet, maintaining their performance, is must both for process and maintenance purposes. Trying to solve the puzzle, Minera Los Pelambres implemented a novel and successful combination of MPC (Multivariable Predictive Control) and advanced control in two of its newest ball mills, reducing considerably process variability while maintaining high throughput and keeping the process well within constraints limits. Because of their differences in processing capacity, size and topology, two different stabilizing-control strategies were developed, tested and tuned. Hence, for both control approaches their implementation process, main results, areas of applicability, limitations and their key performance indicators are discussed further. This paper also discusses the need of such advance control technologies in the mining industry, including the impact of these technologies on best practices for their implementation, operation and long term sustainability

"Application of mechanical excavators for rock excavation in both civil construction and mining engineering fields has increased significantly in recent years. Prediction of the excavation performance of any mechanical excavators – tunnel boring machines, roadheaders, impact hammers, continuous miners and shearers for any geological formation is one of the main concerns in determining the economics of a mechanized mining and/or tunneling operation. A new portable linear rock cutting (PLCM) device was developed in the Mining Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University and supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK-112M859). The PLCM is used for cutting small core or block rock samples by a real-life mini disc cutter. The results from the PLCM are compared with the results obtained from the full scale rock cutting tests and theoretical model. It is found that there is reliable correlation between test results obtained from both cutting tests and theoretical model. 1. INTRODUCTION Mechanical excavators are currently the only alternatives to drill and blast due to higher production rate, increased safety, uniform muck size, less roof support, easier ventilation, continuous rather than cyclical operation, and possibilities for automatic control. The most of large civil tunneling and some mining projects are now carried out by mechanical excavators rather than drill and blast methods. Mechanical excavators can be categorized into two main groups: full-face and partial-face machines. Full-face machines such as tunnel boring machines excavate the face in one mode at the size of the cutterhead. Due to their cutting mode, the shape of the face profile by the full-face machines can only be circular. As for partial-face machines, the cutterhead is attached at the end of a boom. The face profile excavated by the partial-face machines can be from circular to horseshoe shape due to the cutting mode of the boom."

There are more than 15,000 abandoned mine features in New Mexico. A considerable number of these mines have not been cataloged or assessed for prioritized reclamation efforts. These mine wastes can be examined as a resource of critical minerals. Many of legacy mine waste deposits have undiscovered commodities and critical minerals, due to low recovery processes during past production. In this project, Black Hawk mine wastes in Grant County, New Mexico are examined by thorough mineralogical and geochemical characterization. This project seeks to characterize and estimate the critical minerals in mine wastes of Black Hawk mine, and determine the acid generating potential of mine waste. Identifying and producing critical minerals in New Mexico may directly benefit the U.S economy and national security.

The San Juan Coal Mine, located near Farmington, New Mexico, supplies the San Juan Generating Station with more than 6 million tons of coal annually. To replace dwindling surface mine production, San Juan installed a longwall in 2002. The roof rock in much of the underground reserve consists of interbedded coals, carbonaceous shales, and mudstones. Roof support consists of fully-grouted roof bolts, both tensioned and non-tensioned, supplemented by modified cable trusses. Short-encapsulation pull tests conducted by San Juan’s geotechnical engineering department showed that some of the immediate roof layers provided variable bolt anchorage. To ensure that the roof bolts were obtaining the necessary anchorage, additional tests were conducted in a variety of locations. The results have been used to determine the optimum support design for different areas of the mine. Another series of tests evaluated the performance of several bolt and hole diameter combinations. The experience at San Juan Mine shows that short-encapsulation pull tests can provide the information necessary to improve ground control in variable roof conditions. It also illustrates how a pro-active geotechnical engineering program can be an essential component of a state of the art underground coal mine.

Examination of tensile bar surfaces shortly after destructive testing was conducted to search for clues that would aid in optimization of mechanical properties, especially tensile strength, yield strength and elongation to fracture. Cu-Ni-Si-Cr alloy bars in the as-cast, forged, rolled and extruded conditions were examined. Low ductility bars (<4% Elongation) showed dramatically different features than the fracture surfaces of high strength - high ductility bars (7 to 10% Elongation). Analysis of the fracture surfaces at 15X to 2000X and use of Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) identified Ni-Si and Ni-Si-Cr precipitates of varying sizes and morphologies. Thermo-mechanical processing techniques to control the size and distribution of these precipitates show promise in improving the properties and performance of this alloy system and appear to correlate with improvements in the fracture surface morphology.

Significant growth in the past 20 years has seen production grow from 88 Mt in 1997 to 329 Mt for the 2016 calendar year.With more than 50 years of mining in the Pilbara, Rio Tinto has extensive experience in developing standardised approaches to mine geology and the geometallurgical prediction of product quality to meet the increasing growth profile and business planning complexity.Rio Tinto’s standardised approach to mine geology can be developed and utilised on a daily basis to enable the optimisation of the supply chain in terms of tonnages and product quality. This experience demonstrates a fully standardised system can balance the needs of a systematic process across all mine sites and the flexibility for mine geologist to determine and use local properties at each mine; this is done by ensuring two key principals are in place: a single, centrally maintained, system is established and maintained, providing a common set of processes and software across all mine sites the system allows senior mine geologists to review and customise key attributes and product regressions, ensuring site specific data is used in product predictions.The benefits of formal work process and standardisation include health, safety and environment, people and skill development, cost and improved communication. Also product predictions from mine geologists are one of the key inputs into an integrated and dynamic mine to ship scheduling system, optimising the supply chain whilst still managing the product quality. This paper summarizes explosives transportation incident and accident data collected by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) from 1993 to 1998. The paper briefly describes the legislation and regulations that cover hazardous materials transportation. The multimodal incident data collected by the Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA) contained 86 incidents involving Class 1 materials during transit. Thirty-two occurred on public highways. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) data showed there were 8 1 motor-vehicle accidents involving explosives. The FHWA Crash datafile extract contained 649 records categorized as involving Class 1 materials although closer analysis revealed that nearly 90% of these did not involve explosives. In both databases, there were no fatalities caused by the explosive materials although 7 fatalities were the result of injuries suffered during the motorvehicle accident. There were also no serious explosions during any of these incidents or accidents. The paper concludes with an analysis of the risk involved with transportation of commercial Class 1 materials on the highway.

"Abstract Application of soil displacement screw pile (known as SDS pile) has been experiencing accelerated growth in Chinese deep foundation industry because of its technical advantages, environmental benefits, and cost effective as well. As bored displacement piling, SDS piles are able to perform better than non-displacement piling such as CFA plies due to changing the stress state in the soil around SDS piles during the installation. Therefore the design methods between the conventional pile type and SDS pile type have some differences. Based on the methodology research, current Chinese piling rigs, displacement augers and piling projects are introduced, and the current design approaches for SDS piles in China are also described. Moreover, the design results are verified by using full scale load tests, and a part of the research results of SDS piling system acquired in China are presented.IntroductionThe Continuous Flight Auger Pile, also known as the CFA pile, has occupied about 22% in the pile market all over the world (Van Impe, 2004; Bottiau, 2006). The CFA piles are usually used for large diameter (600mm~1200mm) pile foundations and deep excavation projects. Whereas the small size CFA piles (400mm~500mm) are mainly applied for composite foundations in China. In the past 10 years, the new technology of soil displacement screw piling has been applied worldwide (Prezzi et al., 2005). And it is also extensively used for high-rise buildings, industrial plants and railway projects in China (shown in Figure 1)."
