SAND and gravel are unconsolidated granular materials resulting from the natural disintegration of rocks. The two materials nearly al- ways occur together, variably proportioned in widely available de- posits. A commercial sand comprises the fine granular material, usually less than f in. in diameter (ASTM Designation C58-28), and gravel consists of the coarse, granular material larger than sand (ASTM Designation C125-46T). Gravel falls within the range of 1/4 in. and a top size usually of 3 ½ in. Chemical definition is impossible. Sand and gravel are always of secondary origin. They were formed from various massive rocks through the action of chemical and mechanical forces; then transported, abraded, washed, sorted, and classified by streams, glaciers, waves, or winds, to be redeposited in beds as they are found. Chief disintegrating forces in the reduction of rocks into granular particles were frost, rain, the dissolving action of acid and alkaline ground waters, the mechanical action of streams and waves, and the action of glaciers. Method of formation and deposition have imparted physical properties to sands and gravels that largely determine the commercial value of the materials for particular use and influence the manner of exploitation. In the early days of the commercial industry, purchasing specifications were relatively lenient but in. the past decade much more rigid quality requirements have had to be met for acceptance by all classes of purchasers. As part of its efforts to devise new and improved methods for recovering lithium from unconventional resources , the Bureau of Mines investigated a lime -gypsum- roast , water- leach technique for processing lithiumenriched ( 0.01-0.68 pct Li ) clays . This report presents the results of a study of the technical feasibility of extracting lithium from raw material representative of clay beds associated with the McDermitt Caldera complex in Nevada and Oregon . prepared from water used Pellets suitable for bench-scale roasting studies were mixtures of minus 200 -mesh clay , limestone , and gypsum , with as the pelletizing agent . Roasting pelletized charges at 900 ° to 1,000° C temperatures for 1- to 4-h periods produced calcines that leached readily , yielding water - soluble lithium sulfate ( Li₂SO4 ) . A 5-3-3 ( weight ratio ) mix of clay , limestone , and gypsum produced calcines with the best leaching characteristics . More than 91 pct of the contained lithium was extracted from pelletized mix batches roasted in covered refractory boats . Lithium recovery decreased to about 87 pct when the mix was roasted under dynamic conditions in a gas - fired rotary furnace . A reaction mechanism was postulated which indicated that dilution and loss of SO2 and oxygen in the combustion exhaust adversely affected the leachability of the dynamically roasted calcine .

"In flotation, depressants are used to reduce the amount of gangue that reports to the concentrate and hence increase the selectivity of the flotation process. At the University of Cape Town extensive batch flotation tests are carried out to evaluate industrial depressants and standard procedures have been developed over the years.This study was conducted in order to develop an improved method for comparing depressants using machine vision as an aid. The modified method of batch flotation involved a test with prolonged intervals between scraping to allow more time for the froth to build up and mature.This method of testing showed increased differences between the flotation performance obtained as represented by grade recovery curves for carboxymethyl cellulose and guar depressants when compared to the standard method of testing with shorter scraping intervals. The improvement was attributed to reduced entrainment resulting from longer drainage time in the froth and therefore yielded a better test for comparing depressants on the basis of true gangue flotation with minimized entrainment. As expected, the sulphide recoveries were unaffected by the change in method. The machine vision system also added to the information obtained during these tests by recording bubble size trends throughout the tests which were later analyzed and related to the amount of flotable gangue in the froth. Modifications are recommended to improve the usefulness of machine vision in batch flotation."

Pumped storage power plants are one of the options to store the fluctuating production of electric energy from renewable sources in a sustainable manner and is able to provide Europe with the opportunity to overcome the effects of climate change. However, due to the extensive land use required when planning the water reservoirs, several projects have been declined after social conflicts raised, even in Germany. Nonetheless, after the flooding and drought periods in northern Germany, the catastrophic floods of July 2021 in south west Germany, the country’s need to decrease its dependency on import of gas and energy supply, and the energy transition goals set for 2030 and 2050, it has become clear that the implementation for water reservoirs must increase in the coming years, whether above ground or underground. Furthermore, not only Germany is interested in the use of underground cavities for water and energy storage, other European countries as Sweden are currently developing studies and solutions to bring this concept soon to reality in Europe. This article introduces the systematic approach for planning and designing large underground cavities for water reservoirs as a sustainable energy transition approach and a climate change response by showcasing the process of selection and results of the “Energy and Water Storage Harz” (EWAZ) research project. Additionally, the results of the evaluation of the effect of implementing the selected underground and surface infrastructure into the current water management system in the region is presented. Finally, the different possibilities evaluated for the underground cavities within the project and the technical challenges involved are be discussed.

FURNACE-MEN who have not taken advantage of the use of dynamite in certain blast-furnace troubles, as explained by Mr. Witherbee in his valuable papers read before the Institute some years since, cannot appreciate the quick relief and great advantage that may be derived at times from its judicious employment. Before giving my experience in the use of high explosives in blastfurnace troubles of certain kinds, I will record a method I have used with marked success in " blowing down." Had I not understood, however, the use of powder, I would have " salamandered " effectually the first time I tried it. Early in my straight-furnace experiments, last summer, at the Chester, N. J., Furnace, I wanted to blow down to within 3 or 4 feet of the tuyeres. To do this with a down-comer not lined, and without putting in any limestone to keep the gases cool enough to do no harm, was not an easy task. We could keep the bell and hopper cool by filling them with water, say 12 inches deep; but before we got the stock down 15 or 20 feet the pyrometer in the gas-flue on top mas up to 1300°, and the clowncomer was red-hot, with the heat still rising. In this emergency my assistant, Mr. N. M. Langdon, urged the trial of a plan lie had often advocated, viz., the introduction of water in some way under the bell in the proper quantity, in order that its evaporation might absorb and reduce the heat of the escaping gases to a point where it would not do any harm. This presentation in the open pit session deals with the development of a phosphate rock strip mine by CF Industries, Inc., a company that does not presently mine in the Central Florida Phosphate District. Land acquisition, engineering, financing and environmental permitting activities were begun in early 1975; site preparation, environmental monitoring and dragline construction began in mid-1975. The operation is due on-stream in late 1978. The reserve acquisition, permitting, and financing could each easily be developed into a separate paper of interest. Each, however, has been covered before for other mining ventures with similar capital and environment requirements. For that reason, I have chosen to discuss what CF Industries, Inc. is, why it is entering this new sec-tor of the agricultural chemicals business, and, to keep at least some technical basis, what design modifications are possible when the total mine output is used captively and it is unnecessary to have the flexibility to meet the numerous transportation and customer specification considerations. In an attempt to show the size and complexity of the CF organization, a brief description of existing facilities should help show why the big interest in mining phosphate rock.

One of the major problems encountered with recirculatory breathing apparatus presently used by mine rescue teams is that the inspired air becomes uncomfortably, and often dangerously, hot. This is also true with self-rescuers. It is well known that man can tolerate very high dry-bulb temperatures if the wet-bulb temperature is low, but not vice- versa. The maximum tolerable, wet-bulb temperature is about 42 °C (108 °F). A continuously inhaled wet-bulb temperature above this value can cause irreversible damage to the throat and lung tissue, and wet-bulb temperatures close to it cause extreme discomfort (1) and seriously retard the capability of the man to perform useful work. A theoretical analysis, combined with experimental results, has shown that it is the carbon dioxide absorbent that is the major cause of high wet-bulb temperatures of the inspired air in the Siebe Gorman Proto 4, and in the Draeger BG 174 apparatus, both of which are used by rescue teams on South African mines (2). In the Proto 4 apparatus, the absorbent for the carbon dioxide is soda lime (calcium hydroxide). The German Draeger BG 174 also uses this absorbent but under arduous conditions such as in hot environments (50 °C, 122 °F), the use of an alkali absorbent cartridge is recommended which consists mainly of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide). Lithium hydroxide is used in some apparatus in the United States. It is clear that different absorbents will produce different quantities of heat and moisture for a given rate of absorption of carbon dioxide. The proportion of this heat and moisture which is transferred to the user depends upon how much can be removed from the recirculating air between the absorbent and the mouthpiece. This paper discusses the present methods of heat removal and describes the design and test results of a prototype evaporative cooler.

"The mining industry is the source for the vast majority of the metal, mineral and energy resources we use on a daily basis. New deposits are discovered over time and are developed into mines before being rehabilitated – a sequence that when repeated can help contribute to the noble notion of ‘sustainable development’, despite the generic concept of mining being the unsustainable consumption of non-renewable resources. The scale of the modern mining industry is immense – from iron ore and coal to base and precious metals, modern mines are sometimes hundreds or thousands of times bigger than their long lost historic ancestors. We also live in a world with emerging and increasing demands for so-called technology metals (aka ‘critical’, ‘e-tech’ or ‘specialty’ metals) that are needed to feed the rapid growth in renewable energy (especially solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbines), consumer electronics, sophisticated military technologies and super alloys, amongst other uses. These elements include the rare earth elements, indium, germanium, tellurium, rhenium, selenium, gallium and many others, most of which had few or no known uses in the recent past. Although the mining industry has been successful in developing ever larger mines and increasing the scale of production, the key issues underlying the future of the industry are declining ore grades, increased tailings and waste rock generation, the presence of toxic or other impurities, balancing the economics of primary and secondary products, stricter environmental conditions, more difficult exploration, increasing community expectations, as well as the processing of more complex or refractory ores, let alone the recent volatility in world commodity markets. Here, we synthesise our recent research on many of these various issues, focusing on the need to link all areas within the mining chain from mineral resources through mining to environmental performance in order to ensure we obtain the most out of our modern mining effort. The paper presents a unique and detailed assessment of the sustainability challenges and opportunities facing modern mining – and geometallurgical thinking is at the heart of this conundrum.CITATION:Mudd, G M, Jowitt, S M, 2016. For the mining industry in general and gold mining in particular, the past few years have been difficult. Economic conditions, coupled with growing regulatory restrictions, have led to increasingly important reasons for managing assets wisely. From a public company perspective, such asset management makes sense because it ultimately provides for an increase in shareholder wealth, and that is why we are in business. Regardless of whether a company is public or not, assets must be managed effectively to remain a player in today's competitive environment. So, as the chief executive officer of a gold mining company, how do we manage our assets to ensure that we are satisfying our obligations to our customer-the Amax Gold shareholder? The gold industry has been under siege. We have just completed the third year with average prices below $12.85/ g ($400/oz). When finding, and/or acquisition costs and development costs to operating costs are added, there isn't much of a profit margin left. What this environment provides, however, is opportunities for growth. In the gold business, you either grow or you die. Today, most North American gold producers have, at most, a 10-year mine life. We are all scrambling to add reserves so we do not become extinct. As prices remain low, opportunities abound for increasing diminishing reserves. This is the time for the opportunistic company to take advantage of market conditions and that is precisely what Amax Gold has done. There are six components to running a successful gold business: • finding reserves through exploration, acquisition or joint venture, • financing the project, • permitting and constructing the project, • operating the project, • cash management and • communication.

The traditional approach for the beneficiation of South African siliceous sedimentary phosphate ores has been reverse cationic flotation. The robustness of this approach, however, has been a concern due to its sensitivity to parameters such as slimes content, headgrade ( P2O5 and SiO2 content), reagent dosages and conditioning times. The phosphate mineralisation for the ore body under investigation is predominantly carbonate fluorapatite composed of mainly quartz and apatite and minor amounts of chlorite, ilmenite and carbonates. Beneficiation of low grade sedimentary ores containing calcareous impurities, such as calcite and/or dolomite in addition to siliceous gangue, is required to meet the increasing demand; therefore, much research has been carried out to find an alternative technique to beneficiate this material. This paper investigates traditional flotation approaches versus the currently adopted ‘Crago Process’. Comparative results are presented in terms of upgrade potential for the production of concentrate rock for downstream applications. The novelty of the ‘Crago Process’ lies in its double stage approach, i.e. direct fatty acid flotation followed by reverse cationic amine flotation. The Crago process was able to achieve higher upgrades reporting at 32.1% P2O5 compared to conventional cationic flotation only achieving grades of 18.5% P2O5. Furthermore, the recovery gain was 3%.

"One of the major issues that the Rare Earth Elements Mining Industry has to deal with is the legislation vacuum that exists in many countries around the world. Among these, are countries which have long history and tradition in mining. In many cases the lack of direct legislation for REE mine management as well as for other potentially polluting industries can be a barrier to sustainable development. Moreover, the case of lax legislation in China has led to environmental pollution problems and extended smuggling of rare earth elements. This paper looks into the current regulatory status on the mining of REEs, identifies the loopholes and suggests some elements for a new global legislation framework for sustainable development in the REE mining industry. The setting of this regulatory framework will be in line with the present and future challenges of the rare earths market as well as with the policy strategies that are defined internationally. The aim of such a legislative framework will be to strengthen the global rare earth elements supply chain, appease social concerns and ensure the preservation and conservation of the environment. INTRODUCTION The general public received their first introduction to rare earth elements (REEs) in 2010, when the previously inconspicuous commodities became the subjects of front-page headlines. It was when China created a furore in global high-tech markets after imposing an embargo on Japan following a minor marine dispute (Barakos et al. 2015b). Soon enough the Chinese embargo was extended on REE export restrictions all over the world and thus aroused concerns to many countries over potential supply disruptions. The world had suddenly realized that these wonder materials underpin products that they care about. Governmental and industry executives, policymakers and material scientists voiced concerns and conducted numerous reports stating the situation and the risks of a supply crisis. The price spike of 2011 intensified the crisis and the public turmoil, yet the drama did not last for long as the prices declined significantly in 2012. Nevertheless, the world was nonplussed by the fact that China has the total control of the market with more or less the 90% of the global production. More potential entrants became interested, thus initiating an exploration boom during the recent years that has resulted in a significant increase in known global REE reserves that could have potentials for exploitation."

"Block caving is one of the most economical and efficient underground mining methods and has gained popularity around the world especially for extracting low grade and massive ore bodies. However, during the extraction of ore from the draw bells, gases trapped inside the cave could emit into the working areas; hence, ventilation plays a key role in operating block cave mines successfully where gas emission is a concern. To design an effective ventilation system for a block caving mine, given the dynamic nature of the caving process, it is necessary to develop airflow characteristic curves (P-Q) for a given cave. This study uses a 1:100 scale physical model with an exhaust fan system, and a Computational Fluid Dynamics model of a block cave to investigate the airflow behavior through the cave filled with broken rock material. From this study, it was observed that the cave airflow resistance increases with the decrease in cave porosity and the particle size.INTRODUCTIONThe block cave mining method is gaining popularity owing to its low cost and high productivity. This study considered a case where this bulk mining method is used for the extraction of an orebody that contains uranium mineralization. During the extraction of broken ore from the draw bells, radioactive gases trapped in the cave zone could be released into the production drifts and could create unsafe working conditions in the mine. Mine ventilation systems play an important role in regulating the migration of radon in working areas. One of the strategies to control radon migration in a block cave mine is to exert negative pressure on the cave zone by using an exhaust fan above the cave zone. In order to select an appropriate exhaust fan system, it is necessary to study the airflow resistance of the cave zone (Loring & Nelson, 2006).Extraction of broken ore via drawpoints creates a void volume inside the cave called the air gap. Air gaps with larger heights can lead to air blasts in a block cave mine should the cave collapse. Besides that, the air gap can also lead to decrease in ventilation system efficiency due to recirculation of air flow and associated shock losses. Air gap height can also have a profound effect on the variation of cave airflow resistance (Erogul et al., 2015, 2017). The knowledge of cave airflow resistance is also important for predicting the intensity of an air blast. Cave airflow resistance is a function of cave properties such as broken rock size, air gap, and porosity inside the cave zone (Baysal et al., 2017). Initially, a scaled experimental model with a forcing system was developed to investigate the airflow behavior through the cave, however, this model couldn’t provide an observable change in the airflow resistance when the cave properties were changed (cave porosity, and airgap) This was attributed to the difficulties associated with forcing system in terms of achieving lower porosity values with the available material (lightweight shipping boxes) for simulating broken rock inside the cave zones, and controlling air leakage from the model (Ajitha et al., 2018)."

The importance of crushers in the mining industry declined with the introduction and resultant dominance of AG and SAG based circuits, but the recent move to consider more energy efficient circuits has caused the industry to re-consider the role of crushers.Different types of comminution equipment have different efficiency in the way the energy is applied in the size reduction process. Because of the general trend towards more sustainable production processes and emission of carbon dioxide, energy use has become more important. To fully understand how crushers can contribute to optimising the energy application in comminution circuits, detailed models of process performance are required. Such models need to take into account the mechanical design factors and how the crusher performance changes in response to feed conditions, the control strategy utilised and the wear of the crusher liners.It is also critical to analyse the total circuit, not just the individual crushers. To fully understand the performance of the entire circuit, dynamic simulation should be applied. Without the holistic understanding of the total circuit and the incorporation of transient effects, the full circuit performance cannot be adequately determined and the true energy picture will not be quantified.Based on detailed mechanistic modelling of crushers by the authors and the application of dynamic simulation, the opportunities to optimise the use of crushers for energy efficiency are examined.

This report, authorized under Contract Number H0220065, Amendment Number Six, documents the results of an investigation of lighting system modifications and designs for working place illumination in high and low coal entries of underground coal mines. The portable and machine mounted system designs, both modified and prototype, represent a continuation of work performed under Contract Number H0111403, Amendment Number One. See the Final Technical Report dated May 26, 1972 for detailed information concerning this prior Contract. All modified and prototype systems met the performance requirements of Bureau of Mines Specification 2G, as proved by test. In addition, the systems met the requirement for illumination, as specified in the Contract and in the proposed standards which were generated in response to Public Law 91-173.

Geophysical explosive charges are used in mineral resource exploration. They are detonated subsurface and radiate sonic waves into ground monitors, which detect the vibration waves and their interaction with underlying geologic strata. Geophysicists perform computer analyses of the waves reflected from the strata to determine their depth and thickness (Strobel, Berger & Schaefer, 2012). The purpose of this research is to determine how the detonating explosive charge interacts with the adjacent ground and how the induced waves propagate through the surrounding medium. Furthermore, it is necessary to optimize the location of the initiation point within the charge. Establishing both the direction and intensity of the waves will allow geoscientists to refine and optimize geophysical studies that employ explosive charges.

We are developing a cost-saving and environmentally friendly process with low energy consumption to recover the metal content and recycle the acid from spent pickle baths. The metals are precipitated as metal fluorides, which can be turned into metal oxides and hydrofluoric acid by thermal hydrolysis. In the proposed process the solution is concentrated by nanofiltration and the metals are precipitated in a subsequent crystallization step. Different nanofiltration membranes have been evaluated in experimental batch tests. The membrane MPF-34 from Koch Membrane Systems offered both good flux and acceptable metal retention even after long periods of acid storage. The solubility of B-FeF3.3H20 has been measured at varying acid concentrations and at different temperatures. The solubility decreases with increasing hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid concentrations. This suggests that the crystallization process should be operated at high acid concentrations. The crystal growth rate of B-FeF3.3H2O is found to be quite low but increases significantly with temperature. This suggests that the crystallization process should be operated at higher temperatures (40 - 60°C). Within the project a pilot plant has been constructed where the spent pickle bath solution is concentrated by nanofiltration to the desired metal fluoride supersaturation, and B-FeF3.3H2O is crystallized in a 10 L continuous crystallizer.

The microtunneling test program is one of three main elements of the research project, "Trenchless Construction: Evaluation of Methods and Materials to Install and Rehabilitate Underground Utilities." The other elements of this project include an evaluation and demonstration of horizontal directional drilling technology and pipeline rehabilitation systems. The research is a Corps and Industry cost-shared project funded under the Construction Productivity Advancement Research (CPAR) program. The laboratory partner is the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), Geotechnical Laboratory. The industry partner is the Louisiana Tech University's Trenchless Technology Center. Industry participants are contributing over half the total cost of this research. The overall objective of the CPAR program is to improve productivity in the U.S. construction industry, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of the U.S. industry in domestic and overseas markets. The Corps and other federal and state agencies will benefit by realizing reduced costs, enhanced safety and better products and services as the products of this research program are developed, tested, and pushed into the market place. The microtunneling demonstrations and evaluations were performed during September and October 1992 at a specially constructed test facility built at WES in Vicksburg, MS. The test facility is 104 m (340-ft) long, 5 m (16-ft) wide, and 4 m (13-ft) deep. It was constructed, ironically, by first excavating a trench into which 6 different types of soils were placed and compacted in approximately 18.3 m (60-ft) long sections. The soil profiles include a lean silty clay (loess), a dry sand, highly plastic buckshot clay, wet sand, clay gravel and silt. The interfaces between soil profiles were sloped to simulate mixed face conditions as the machines exit one zone and enter another, and provided challenges to ground control and alignment and grade control during these transitions. Moisture and density tests were performed on all materials in each lift to assure uniformity. Horizontal inclinometers and 3 levels of settlement plates were installed at key locations in the test bed. The settlement plates and rods and the horizontal inclinometers, together with surface survey points, provided data to evaluate settlement and heave along the test section. Penetration resistance was measured in each section of the completed test bed. Strain gages were installed in 8 of the 0.6 m (24 in.) diam. Hobas pipe sections to measure strains in the pipe as it was being jacked into place. Steering jack loads, jacking thrust loads, and cutterhead torque were also measured during the drives. The results of these tests will be used together with other information to develop guidelines for conducting feasibility studies and selecting proper methods compatible with anticipated conditions.

The history of gold and silver analyses shows an interesting duality. On one hand, classical chemical and instrumental methods have evolved to meet changing needs, but on the other hand, the age-old and somewhat empirical fire assay has remained a popular tool. Inasmuch as gold and silver generally have been present in ores at low concentra¬tions, methods have been challenged by a need for sensitivity and selectivity coupled with reasonable assay time. A progressive increase in the importance of low grade materials as ore sources has led to the need for improved methods. Assays of these materials are required for process control and accounting in operating plants as well as for guiding research and development activities. The analytical response to these needs is evidenced by numerous reviews published through 1977-¬e.g., cf Kolthoff and Elving (1966), Beamish and Van Loon (1966, 1972, and 1977), Young (1971) , Mallett (1970), and Sen Gupta (1973). In this paper we present a brief sketch of the history and status of various gold and silver methods. A more detailed summary of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is Given, as this method has gained in popularity more than other assay methods. AAS methods currently in use are summarized and discussed briefly. This paper is not meant to be a detailed review, as are the above mentioned publications. Rather, we borrow from those works and more recent papers to report trends in gold and silver analyses (particularly in AAS). Also, we discuss some selected poten¬tial problems, and problems that have been experienced by this laboratory.

Three phases of Bi2O3 were first synthesized by extraction-stripping precipitation and post decomposition from BiCl3 leaching solution. The as-prepared Bi2O3 were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic performances of the oxides were investigated by decomposing rhodamine B (RB) under visible irradiation. It shows that the Bi2O3 with different crystal structures and morphology were obtained under different decomposition temperature. The band gaps of as-prepared samples were 2.36, 2.41, and 2.78 eV for b-Bi2O3, a-Bi2O3, and d-Bi2O3, respectively, and the photocatalytic activities followed the order: b-Bi2O3 > a-Bi2O3 > d-Bi2O3, which was in good accordance with the photoluminescence spectra measurement results. The b-Bi2O3 exhibited the best photocatalytic performance which can effectively degrade 99.23% RB within 240 min.
