The hydrophobicity of oil shale was found to follow the sequence R-5 > Mahogany >> Eastern. Further, hydrophobicity was found to correlate with the total organic carbon (TOG) content, decreasing with increasing specific gravity of raw oil shale pieces. Differences in hydrophobicity from piece to piece indicate that gravity preconcentration would be much more effective for Western than for Eastern oil shales. Purified kerogen concentrates and low specific gravity fractions (<2.0) of raw Western oil shale samples show critical surface tension of wetting values of [y]c = ~35 mNm -1, and for a kerogen concentrate from an Eastern oil shale [y]c = ~46 mNm-l. This infers that dust from oil shale mining operations can be suppressed by surfactant solutions similar to those used to suppress coal dust.

"The solar grade silicon ingot produced from directional solidification process usually pushes the impurities to the top and finally cut off and discarded, which leads to material loss. The hard inclusions lead to wire breakages during the cutting of the ingot in wafers. The main kinds of inclusions found in solar grade silicon have been investigated using vacuum filtration: needle-like Si3N4 and lumpy SiC inclusions. Clusters of SiC inclusions and Si3N4 are also found. Surface observations of the scraps before polishing reveals that Si3N4 inclusions are usually bigger and in some cases can be about a few millimeters. SiC inclusions are usually smaller, ~200µm but can be ~500µm in some cases. Inclusions observed after filtration are mainly SiC with diameters ~10µm. Through the vacuum filtration, 99% inclusions can be removed 99%. The possible mechanisms of filtration are cake filtration for the larger sized Si3N4 and SiC inclusions and deep-bed filtration the SiC inclusions. For the directional solidified silicon ingot, an approximate distance of ~10mm gave an encouraging cutoff thickness. The inclusions sizes were below 10µm. Introduction The search for an alternative source of energy to fossil fuel has led to a dramatic increase in the demand for solar energy due to its high dependability (abundant in nature) and environmental friendliness 1). During the last 5 to 10 years, the annual worldwide production of solar cell by the photovoltaic industry has increased to an annual rate of 30 to 40 percent 2). A necessary condition for the maintenance and even an increase of this growth rate is a decrease in the cost of feedstock for the solar cell production 1). The total international production in 1997 was 130 MW worth more than $500 million. In 2004 the consolidated world total production of PV cells increased to 1146 MW or around. $7 billion (Figure 1) 3). Silicon is currently the most dominant semiconductor material used in the PV industry. As shown in Figure 2 3), solar cells consist of two types of material, often the p-type and n-type silicon. Light of certain wavelengths are able to ionize the atoms in the silicon (causing atoms to either gain or lose electrons) and the internal field produced by the junction separates some of the positive charges (“holes”) from the negative charges (electrons) within the photovoltaic device. The holes are swept into the positive or p-layer and the electrons are swept into the negative or n-layer. Although these opposite charges are attracted to each other, most of them can only recombine by passing through an external circuit outside the material because of the internal potential energy barrier. Therefore if a circuit is made, power can be produced from the cells under light because the free electrons pass through the load to recombine with the positive holes."

Bastnasite concentrate was processed to recover total rare - earth content and obtain high - purity ceric nitrate . Reaction of the concentrate with 45 percent caustic soda for 1 hour at 180 ° C in stainless steel vessels resulted in 99 - percent conversion to rare - earth hydroxides . A drying step followed by solution in nitric acid produced a tetravalent cerium fraction amenable to extraction with TBP . Single- stage separatory funnel experiments resulted in 90 -percent recovery of ceric nitrate at a purity of 99.9 percent . Fractional extraction in pressure - bubbler columns resulted in 98.5 - percent recovery of 99.5 -percent - pure ceric nitrate .

The Halmahera Contract of Work is a sixth generation contract held 82.5 per cent by Newcrest Mining Limited and 17.5 per cent by PT Aneka Tambang and takes in the Gosowong Project area. In 1991 Newcrest Mining Limited established a small exploration office in Jakarta and proceeded to seek exploration opportunities. The Halmahera area was identified as a substantial prospective ground position in a relatively unexplored area. In late-1991 Newcrest Mining Limited and PT Aneka Tambang agreed to explore in Halmahera. Initial field work commenced in July 1992. A vigorous ground reconnaissance programme led to the discovery of the Gosowong deposit a little over 12 months later in September 1993. In April 1997 the Contract of Work was approved covering much of the island of Halmahera. Between September 1997 and November 1998 activities were directed principally towards obtaining the necessary permits required to commence construction activities. Some particularly ambitious targets were set for achieving this outcome. An aggressive construction programme commenced in late-1998. Construction took place during a period of unseasonally high rainfall, which in itself presented additional challenges to the construction team. A key milestone for the project was achieved on 1 July 1999 when wet commissioning of the process plant commenced. Construction of the Gosowong Mine was achieved on time and within budget. A period of some six years elapsed from the initial discovery of the Gosowong deposit to the time of the first gold pour. Much of the permitting, construction and commissioning activity took place between September 1997 and July 1999. This coincided with a period of significant social, economic and political upheaval in Indonesia. During the construction period a high level of importance was placed on the structured recruitment and training of local people, as well as fostering appropriate community and local business development programmes in the communities nearby the project. Emphasis was also placed on environmental management with detailed long-term planning and progressive rehabilitation commencing during the construction phase. The permitting and subsequent development of the Gosowong Project has demonstrated that even during the difficult times, with commitment, it is possible for mining and exploration companies to conduct business in Indonesia.

Soon after the search for uranium ores on the Colorado Plateau began in earnest, thousands of feet of drill core ranging from 1 1/8 to 2 1/8 in. diam became available for study. Although significant advances had been made in the technique of quantitative gamma-ray borehole logging, instrumentation was in the development stage, and complete reliance could not be placed on gamma-ray logs alone to interpret quantitatively the meaning of radioactivity in a drillhole. A method that would be faster than chemical analysis and still give reproducible and reliable results for various drill core sizes was desirable to provide additional information on the enormous footage of drill core being accumulated. A solid phosphor scintillation drill core scanner was designed and constructed. Basically the instrument was developed to measure radiation from a drill core which would not be clearly recorded by a gamma-ray logger using a Geiger tube as the sensitive element. Such data would be beneficial in constructing isorad maps to delineate ore-bearing zones. A calibration in the range 0.01 to 0.1 pct eU.,O, was provided; above 0.1 pct eU3O8 gamma-ray logs were available and were being used to calculate grade and tonnage of ore reserves. The core scanner, however, has been used to estimate equivalent uranium content of ore-grade materials containing as much as 2.2 pct eU3O8 with an accuracy of ± 10 pct, the sample being in the form of a BX drill core. Actually, an apparent calibration of eU3O8 vs counts per unit time is a straight line with a slope that is a function of the sensitive element and the geometry of the counting assembly. A true calibration that will show the expected departure from a straight line is due principally to the random nature of the pulse from a radiation source and the nonlinearity of the electron circuitry. Design and Construction: Three methods of detecting radioactivity were considered and applied in developing the core scanner now in use: 1) the Geiger tube, 2) liquid scintillation phosphors, and 3) solid scintillation phosphors. The desired sensitivity and long-term drift characteristics needed for this operation could be attained only by using solid scintillation phosphors. All three methods are discussed. Before scintillation counters were common, nine beta-gamma sensitive Geiger tubes 7/8 in. diam by 12 in. long were used, arranged to surround the drill core with tube axes parallel to the axis of the core. This arrangement of Geiger tubes was en- closed in a lead shield 1 in. thick, and provision was made to slide a 6-ft length of drill core manually into the counting chamber, one foot at a time. A count for each segment was taken with a scaler while the core remained stationary. The equivalent uranium content of the different sections of drill core could then be estimated with the aid of a calibration curve of counts per unit time vs percent equivalent uranium (eU). In rare cases the effects of the radioactivity concentrated in small areas within the core introduced errors in the readings made with the Geiger tube arrangement owing to the geometry of the measurement. The variability of counting rate due to a localized concentration of radioactivity in a spot in the wall of a drill core is illustrated in Fig. 1. This effect and the inherent low efficiency of the Geiger tube were considered major disadvantages of this counting arrangement. When liquid scintillation phosphors became available the core scanner in Fig. 2 was constructed to make a more accurate measurement of the equivalent uranium content of a sample. This instrument contains about 4 liters of liquid phosphor in a stainless steel coaxial cylinder 1 ft long, with inner and outer walls 0.060 in. and 0.125 in. thick, respectively. Four end-window type photomulti-plier tube with cathodes of 2 in. diam, immersed in the solution at right angles to the axis of the core, were used to observe light flashes in the phosphor. The liquid phosphor offered equal sensitivity to radiation originating at any point in the enclosure and represented geometrically the optimum in design. However, providing a semi-permanent leak-proof seal between the glass envelope of the phototube and the metal walls of the container proved to be a serious problem in constructing the equipment. The most effective seals were especially machined O-rings from sections of large tygon tubing. The tygon took a permanent set owing to cold flow characteristics and in most cases sealed completely. The light absorption characteristics of the liquid phosphor changed gradually with time, and after one month the counting rate had decreased to half the original value. The most sensitive liquid phosphor tested proved to be a solution containing 4 g of 2.5-diphenyloxazole and 0.01 g of 2-(1-naphthy1)-5-phenyloxazole per liter of toluene. With fresh solution in the chamber and with all photomultiplier tubes operating in parallel, the counting rate contributed by any one of the four photomultiplier tubes was about 85 pct of the counting rate from a single tube operated individually. From these observations it was concluded that owing to coincident loss and light attenuation within the liquid phosphor, the apparent sensitivity could not have been materially increased by additional phototubes. An approach to environmental sustainability and improved process economy, in sulphide minerals production is recycling of process water in flotation of complex sulphide ores, although the chemistry of process water may be a critical issue to flotation efficiency. The influence of major components of calcium and sulphate ions in process water on xanthate collector adsorption and flotation response using pure chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite minerals were investigated by Hallimond flotation, zeta-potential measurement, FTIR and XPS spectroscopy studies, while bench scale flotation tests were also carried out using complex sulphide ores. The impact of the species in flotation was comprehended using deionised water, tap water, process water and simulated water containing equivalent amount of calcium and sulphate species in process water. Hallimond flotation results showed a decrease of chalcopyrite and galena recovery in process water and also in the presence of calcium and sulphate ions in both deionised and process waters, whereas sphalerite does not respond to flotation. The adsorption of calcium and metal ions but not sulphate ions on the minerals is evidenced by zeta-potential data. FTIR and XPS studies revealed the presence of surface oxidized sulfoxy species and surface calcium carbonates on chalcopyrite in the presence of process water and water containing calcium ions, surface oxidized sulfoxy and carbonate species on galena in the presence of deionised water, process water and water containing calcium and sulphate ions, all at flotation pH 10.5, and these surface species influenced xanthate adsorption. The presence of surface oxidized sulfoxy and carbonate species at the sphalerite flotation pH 11.5 were seen in the presence of deionised water, process water and water containing calcium and sulphate ions, but the surface species does not influence xanthate adsorption. Bench scale flotation using two different complex sulphide ores showed that chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite recoveries are better in process water than tap water. The studies showed that the process water can be recycled in flotation with no detrimental effect on grade and recovery of sulphide minerals. The separation of fine mineral particles, especially using environmentally friendly approaches, is one of the main problems in the processing of low-grade ores and the re-processing of mining tailings. This work assesses the potential of biosurfactants as collectors in the flotation of ultrafine (smaller than 20 μm) particles of hematite and malachite. As biosurfactants, we test acetylated acidic (ac-ASL) and lactonic sophorolipids (ac-LSL). In addition, n-dodecyl-β-D-maltoside (DDM) is used as a model non-ionic alkyl disaccharide surfactant, and sodium oleate (NaOl) is used as a reference. The biosurfactants are characterized using surface tension and foam analysis. The interaction of the minerals with the surfactants is characterized using zeta potential, solubility, and single-mineral flotation. The collecting properties of the surfactants are compared for the ultrafine (− 20 μm) and coarser (38–90 μm) particle size in the two-mineral flotation of hematite and malachite against quartz. The ultrafine particle size improves the grade in the oleate flotation of hematite, as well as the grades in the DDM flotation of hematite and malachite, which is explained by the weak interactions of the metal oxides with fatty acids and DDM. At the same time, the flotation with ac-LSL and ac-ASL is highly tolerant to the ultrafine particle size. These results indicate that biosurfactants are an interesting alternative to conventional petroleum-based surfactants in the flotation of Fe and Cu oxides. Moreover, a proper selection of surfactants can help combat the problem of fines.

In 2004, the engineers at the Deer Creek Mine located near Huntington, Utah initiated the ventilation planning to exploit a remote area of the mine?s reserves. This area was located under a mountain which would not allow for the incorporation of an additional shaft or portal access near the proposed longwall panels. With this constraint along with the desire to maintain a two entry gate road system and the expected condition of frequent coal wash outs a ventilation plan was established. Different options were examined that included; increasing the current exhaust fan power, adding another exhaust fan installation, converting the ventilation fans in the active portion of the mine to a forcing system, and modifying the ventilation system in the active area of the mine to a push-pull system. The push-pull ventilation system was ultimately selected. This paper details the design process of the ventilation system upgrade, the procurement process for the new fans, and the new fan startup testing.

The words ""Uncertainty"" and ""Risk"" pervade every discussion about mining exploration and investment. Perhaps these terms are subjectively understood by industry professionals, but objective portrayal of these concepts outside the industry is a woefully undeveloped science. This paper addresses current industry understanding and practice regarding quantitative risk assessment techniques, and provides examples of the application of three of these techniques. Probabilistic techniques for financial risk assessment are valuable adjuncts to conventional financial analysis, and address a range of issues not assessable by any other means. The value of whole-of-project probabilistic risk assessment is currently debatable for decision-making purposes, but is seen as important as a mechanism to focus attention to the critical issues that ultimately impact on project success. The dissection of project capital into risk and non-risk components provides valuable insights into risk characteristics not readily quantifiable in any other way. This technique also provides a framework for more objective ""what if?"" scenario evaluation and for the capital structure of resource projects. Finally, mechanisms for the valuation of undeveloped reserves are examined, and guidelines suggested. The importance of reliability in production cost estimates is highlighted and the impact of early development on reserve valuations is discussed. The importance of economics throughout all stages of the evaluation process is fundamental.

Fracture initiation and propagation, being one of the most intensive subjects in rock mechanics; contribute significantly to the deformation of jointed rock masses. An experimental study on fractured granitic rock was carried out to determine the peak strength of specimen under triaxial loading conditions. The commonly observed failure mode for rock specimens in this study was found to be the shearing of the plane of weakness. The minimum peak strength of fractured rock is observed when the joint orientation is approximately 70° to the horizontal axis. Based on experimental test data, an empirical expression was developed to accommodate the effect of joint orientation and joint trace length in estimating the peak strength of fractured rocks. The predicted values of peak strength using the proposed equation well agree with the experimental results carried out on singly fractured specimens under triaxial loading conditions. The threshold stress values of crack initiation and propagation depend on joint geometrical parameters, their degree of interconnectivity, as well as surrounding stresses on the fracture plane.

As we are all well aware, the demand for coal is increasing very rapidly. This makes the coal industry one of great opportunity for both the miner and the-supplier. Up until the middle 1960&apos;s, the price of coal had been one of the most stable of all commodities for the proceeding fifty years. In somewhat oversimplified terms this was because the inflationary tendencies had been offset by improved mine techniques and more efficient, more productive, and more reliable equipment; but, in the last seven years the price of coal has doubled. It is not the intent of this paper to discuss the many reasons for this price increase, but to show how the cost of hauling coal can be sharply decreased with a new truck concept. Not long ago a mining executive stated that all haulage trucks now available are basically the same. They look the same; they cost about the same; they have the same engine, power train, and tires; and, they have about the same operating cost. Truck size has increased which has reduced the number of drivers, but the purchase price and maintenance and repair costs have increased proportionally. Pits must be widened and loading shovels enlarged, out, all this has not reduced the cost of moving coal. Another executive said that he saw no advantage in buying new trucks because his people now know how to maintain and operate the ones they presently have. They have all the right spare parts along with a good maintenance program. Most replaceable parts of the trucks now in operation have been replaced and improved at least once and the trucks are now running better than when they were new. Besides, the trucks are no pretty well written off.

Shooting Soot from Stacks In the DuPont magazine of June, 1916, S. R. Russell describes a method of cleaning large smoke or kiln stacks which he calls "simple,. economical- slid-most efficient" and-which- he -says can- be used in either-lined or unlined stacks, brick or steel, without fear of injury to the stack or lining. He gives the following specific directions: "The gun can be made out of air old piece of shafting about 4 in. in diameter and 14 to 16 in. long. Bore a hole 1 ¾ in. in diameter and 10 in. long in the center of the piece. Then bore a small horizontal hole ¼ in. in diameter through the piece-to the bottom of the center bore. This hole serves as a touch hole for inserting the fuse. "The-whole thing can be mounted on a pedestal about 6 in. in diameter so that it will stand in an upright position. "The -method of operation is as follows: Pour some FFF Blasting Powder into the mouth of the cannon to about 2 in. from the top. Tamp to the collar with dry clay. , A short piece of fuse is inserted in the touch hole and in contact with the main powder charge. Open the flue door at the bottom of the stack, set the cannon on the bottom and in the center of the stack, light the fuse and close the flue door. "The explosion shakes and loosens the soot adhering to the sides, causing it to fall to the bottom. It can&apos; then be removed through the flue opening.

The Bureau of Mines developed a method to melt and cast specimens of hafnium- carbon alloy and studied their properties . A rotating - ladle vacuum or inert atmosphere arc furnace was designed , special electrodes and molds were developed , and operating procedures were worked out for casting small shapes . The cast specimens were evaluated according to their carbon content for melting point , density , microhardness , electrical resistivity , and oxidation resistance . Lattice dimensions were determined , and metallographic specimens were prepared . Photomicrographs were taken of specimens containing 2.72 , 5.50 , 6.47 , 9.97 , 12.8 , and 15.7 weight - percent carbon , and their grain structures were compared .

Solid-state equipment offers a number of potential advantages in the coal mining industry. These advantages can only be realized, however, through careful and judicious design of the control and protection circuitry. Problems relating to the interaction of solid-state equipment on the electrical system and the special design considerations which apply to solid-state circuitry are examined. Design guidelines are provided for solid-state applications in the areas of: (a) equipment operated from a DC trolley wire, (b) drive systems for surface mining equipment, (c) AC motor starters, and (d) electromagnetic interference.

"How well do current modeling procedures calculate the rear abutment extent and loading? Does an improved understanding of the rear abutment extent warrant a change in standing support in bleeder entries? What is the optimal standing support for bleeder entries separated from the longwall startup room by a barrier pillar? To help answer these questions and to determine the current utilization of standing support in bleeder entries, four bleeder entries at varying distances from the startup room were instrumented, observed, and numerically modeled. This evaluation was intended to determine the rear abutment extent and magnitude at various locations to optimize standing support in these entries and those under similar conditions. This paper details observations made by NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries of a deep cover longwall panel; specifically data collected from instrumented pumpable cribs, observations of the conditions of the entries, and numerical modeling of the bleeder entries during longwall extraction. The primary focus was on the extent and magnitude of the abutment loading experienced by the standing support. As expected, the instrumentation of the standing supports showed very little loading relative to the capacity of the standing supports—less than 25 tons load and 1 inch convergence. The observations of the conditions showed little to no change from before the longwall panel extraction began to when the panel was more than 50% extracted. In addition to the observation and instrumentation, numerical modeling was performed to evaluate the bleeder design. The Flac3D program was used to evaluate these four bleeder entries using previously defined modeling and input parameter estimation procedures. The results indicated only a minor increase in load during the extraction of the longwall panel. The model showed a much greater increase in stress due to the development of the gateroad and bleeder entries, with about 80% of the increase associated with development and 20% with longwall extraction. The Flac3D model showed very good correlation between expected gateroad loading during panel extraction and those expected based on previous studies. The front and side abutment extent modeled was very similar to observations from this and previous panels with similar conditions. The results of this study showed that the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The convergence measured in these bleeder entries was small enough not to mandate any additional support beyond development even by U.S. or Australian standards. The pumpable crib load and convergence experienced depends on the geological setting, mining geometries, and timing. The farther away from the startup room, the lower the applied load and smaller the convergence in the entry if all else is held constant. Finally, the numerical modeling method used in this study was capable of replicating the expected and measured results near seam."

Dust surveys were conducted at six underground coal mines to determine if deep-cutting practices expose face workers to higher levels of respirable dust. The surveyed mines were able to successfully mine deep cuts without significantly increasing the dust exposures of face workers. In general, all of the selected mines exercised good dust control practices by maintaining water sprays, scrubber airflows, proper curtain setback distances and providing sufficient airflow to the active faces. For exhausting face ventilation, field data indicate that scrubber airflow is the most important factor for controlling dust. Data collected for this study indicate that 20-mesh screens should be cleaned for every 12.2 m (40 ft) of advance, because 22% of the deep cuts surveyed for this study experienced a 20% to 35% decrease in scrubber airflow over the course of the cut. For blowing face ventilation, field data and past research indicate that dust control is aided by maintaining a proper curtain-to-scrubber airflow ratio of 1.0 (measured before scrubber activation), as well as a curtain setback distance that allows the miner operator to stand at the mouth of the curtain for the entire cut. Dust levels on the bolting faces did not appear to be affected by the longer cycles associated with deep-cut mining when good ventilation practices were used.

Information is given on ignition temperature , spark energy for ignition , minimum explosion concentration , explosion pressure , rate of pressure rise , and in some instances , the admixed inert dust and oxygen concentration in an atmosphere required to prevent ignition of dust dispersions . The effects of particle diameter on explosibility and pyrophoricity are also discussed .

En este sentido, si la geología se comprendía como una materia integral que trata del estudio de la tierra, aquí se ofrece una serie de cursos independientes. y especializados. Dicha variación es consecuencia del aumento de publicación de nuevos conocimientos. Como una alternativa a la organización existente en geología, se propone un sistema jerárquico de tres niveles, donde la escala juega un papel clave y la enseñanza, es un proceso orientador antes que descriptivo. La principal ventaja de este esquema sobre el tradicional es que la relación entre segmentos de materia en cualquier nivel es conducido por profesores en el siguiente nivel superior, sin que haya necesidad de colaboración detallada entre profesores dentro o entre niveles.
