This paper examines the effect of prill size consistency, internal panicle density, and oil absorbency on Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO)-emulsion blends. By analyzing these physical properties of prill and the nature of the blending process, a mathematical model has been developed to theoretically predict blend densities. Calculated densities can now be compared to actual field densities to give an operator a basis for comparing various manufacturers’ emssions and Ammonium Nitrate (AN) during bid solicitation. The lowest priced emulsion and/or AN may not be the most economical, due to the impact of specific physical characteristics. These factors dictate the blending mechanics and resulting density yields for various mixes. The research was driven from observed ‘field’ mixing relationships and data. Ultimately, such a model can be an effective tool in evaluating blends from a cost and performance basis.

A substantial lifestyle destination in the United Arab Emirates, in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi comprising of 1315 villas, town houses and non-residential leisure facilities is built over an area of 280 hectares of former mangrove areas, natural sands and reclaimed lands. Large-scale subsoil investigations including field and laboratory testing carried out dividing the entire site in to 7 clusters. This investigation revealed alternating layers of loose sands and silty clays within the load influence zone of planned foundations, showing susceptibility to excessive settlements. Therefore, ground improvement works were undertaken using a combination of stone columns, Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC) and excavation and replacement of soils plus a 0.4m thick load transfer platform. This was necessary to limit the settlements, increase-bearing capacity and prevent long-term settlements. 30 no’s of full-scale Zone Load Tests, ZLT were carried out each for a duration of 30 days in order to ascertain the anticipated long-term settlements in the clay layers. In addition, further testing of electrical cone penetration tests, CPT, and Plate Load Tests, PLT. The use of Priebe and Asaoka’s observational procedure were applied to predict the final settlements and the use of back-analysis from the 30 days Zone Load Tests, ZLT results to establish the site-specific consolidation parameters in clay layers to optimize the design and ground improvement works.

Molten alkali nitrates are used commercially as thermal storage fluids (HTF) for solar thermal electricity generation. Their range of operation is limited by the thermal stability and this limits the energy (steam-Rankine cycle) efficiency of these processes. In this study, the effect of atmosphere on the thermal stability of nitrates was investigated using simultaneous thermal analysis techniques (STA). The use of oxygen (O2) as a blanket gas was found to delay the decomposition point of the ternary NaNO3–KNO3–LiNO3 (13.23–57.14–29.63 weight ratio) mixture by 55 °C. By which operating range will increase 65 °C more compared to the binary solar salt. Higher heating rates increased the decomposition point but had less effect on premelting and melting properties. Nitrogen monoxide, and O2 evolution after melting indicates concurrent reversible reactions. Similar phenomena were observed for single and binary nitrates. The eutectic melting point of ternary nitrate obtained from the STA agreed well with FactSage eutectic composition prediction.

Lithium-ion battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12V, 24V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicated that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

The preparation of high-purity zirconyl compounds was studied in order to develop an economical process for obtaining pure zirconium via the caustic fritting of zircon sand. The direct dissolution of caustic frits with concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid at 80c. followed by the addition of a small amount of acidified gelatin, gave high-purity zirconyl chloride or nitrate. The addition of a small amount of gelatin caused a mutual flocculation between colloidal silica and gelatin. The precipitation of this silica floc markedly lowered the content of silica in the product. The silica content of the compounds (or solution) so produced, generally less than 100 ppm., was sufficiently low for tributyl phosphate extraction for nitrate solutions. It was found that the degree of purification de-pends not only on the procedures employed but also on the nature of the frit itself. Silica was more effectively eliminated from the fritted product produced at higher temperatures, and less silica was present in the com-pound prepared from the frit produced in a shorter heating time. "The measured response of residential structures is a critical indicator of troublesomeor potentially damaging ground vibrations. A study was conducted to evaluate theresponse of structures situated in the periphery of four open-pit coal mines in India. Although, most of the structures were at far-off distances from the present blasting sites, an attempt was made to document the response of structures to blast vibration for future applications to optimize the blast designs for the safety of the structures. The study involved a total 215 blasts, employing one-, two- and three-hole calibration study, and production blasts. The bench height varied from 7.5 m to 42 m, and boreholes loaded with emulsion and slurry explosives were 250, 260, 270 and 310 mm in diameter. The explosive detonated in a blast were between 300-198400 kg whereas in a delay it was 33-24800 kg. Up to 12 tri-axial vibration sensors were located in overburden along a linear array from 25 m to 6.5 km distance from the blasts. Altogether, 1512 blast vibration signatures were recorded. Production and specially fi red single-charge blasts allowed the determination of natural ground frequency. The fundamental frequency of the structures ranged between 3.13 to 10.6 Hz, the same as those of the ground vibrations. The amplifi cation of vibration in the structures was in the range of 1.6 to 5.6. The study details the interaction between ground vibrations and selected structures, and the means to reduce amplifi cation of vibrations in the structures and persistence of vibrations through improved blast design."

An infrared absorbance technique is described for analyzing anodic gases produced during the electrowinning of uranium , thorium , and rare - earth metals in molten fluorides . Typical components determined qualitatively in a gas sample are CO , CO₂ , CF4 , C₂ Fe , C3F8 , COS , CS₂ , and SiF4 . About 20 minutes are required to record and interpret the spectrogram , and report quantitative results for CO, CO₂ , CF4 , and SiF . The procedure is used for control during electrolysis .

The St Lawrence Seaway, a deep-water canal system between Montreal and Lake Ontario, was opened for navigation on April 25, 1959. Prior to the opening of the new Seaway, small boats known as canalers and a few deep-sea carriers, primarily from Norway since World War II, were the only ships able to journey past Montreal into Lake Ontario through the old Canadian St. Lawrence canal system. Thus it was necessary for many tons of bulk and general cargo to be shipped all-rail to and from Atlantic ports or to be transhipped to and from canalers. With the opening of the new Seaway, large Great Lakes bulk carriers and a much larger percentage of the world's shipping fleet are now able to sail directly from the sea to the heart of industrial North America. In this paper, the historical events leading up to the construction of the Seaway and the physical nature of the Great Lakes transportation system are briefly reviewed. Following this, an attempt is made to evaluate the effects of the new Seaway on Canada's mineral industry. Because the Seaway has been in operation for only one season, this paper must be considered only an interim report. Because of the importance of the Seaway to iron ore, this commodity will be dealt with in detail, although the effect on other mineral commodities such as coal, petroleum, nonferrous ores, iron and steel will be mentioned. At this time the author wishes to thank the various company and government officials who provided both factual information and critical opinions.

Dissolution rates of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) were calculated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The calculated dissolution rate decreased by a factor of 3.2 after the electrode was passivated. The results presented in this work indicate that the reduction of Fe3+ was the rate-controlling step for fresh CuFeS2 electrodes while the transport of cations within the passive film limited the dissolution rate for the passivated electrode. The transfer of cations at the electrode/electrolyte and passive film/electrolyte interfaces did not affect the dissolution rates of the fresh and passivated CuFeS2 electrodes, respectively. The catalytic effect of pyrite (FeS2) on the dissolution of CuFeS2 continued after the passivating treatment. The contact of fresh and passivated CuFeS2 electrodes with different FeS2 particles resulted in increased dissolution rates, due to an increase in the reduction rate of Fe3+.

Electrowinning is one of the nickel recovery processes from solutions obtained from the leaching of nickel sources. Every year significant amounts of nickel products are used in various industrial processes and daily life, such as catalysts or batteries, which are a valuable source of nickel for recovery. Nickel purity is also very important in the electrowinning process, because the amount of impurities in nickel such as sulphur, if greater than 100 ppm, make it unsuitable for use in catalysts and plating. Because sulfur is intrinsic to the sulphate electrowinning system, we needed to investigate parameters that can affect the quality and purity of nickel. In this regard, experiments were performed in static and circulating electrowinning processes. A monitoring and circulation system was designed and built to measure voltage, current and temperature as well as to circulate the solution in the system at a specified rate. It was then observed that nickel ion concentration, pH, using the circulation system and additives, were factors affecting the purity and quality of nickel, and in the best case the amount of sulphur in nickel was below 100 ppm. Vanadium is subject to only light corrosion in phosphoric acid at temperatures up to 60° C. and has a moderate corrosion rate in this acid at 100° C. It is relatively corrosion resistant in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids up to 60° C, but corrodes rapidly at 100° C. It corrodes rapidly in dilute nitric acid at 35° C. Vanadium is almost inert in 10-percent solutions of formic, acetic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids; in 9-percent oxalic acid it corrodes slowly up to 60° C. and rapidly at 100° C. Vanadium is resistant to corrosion in substitute ocean water, tapwater, and in 3-percent sodium chloride and 10-percent sodium hydroxide solutions. It is readily attacked, however, by 20-percent ferric chloride, 20-percent cupric chloride and 5-percent mercuric chloride solutions. Vanadium is protected by contact with magnesium, aluminum, and steel SAE 4130 in substitute ocean water, by magnesium and aluminum in 3-percent sodium chloride solution, and by magnesium in tapwater. Vanadium protects copper in substitute ocean water. When vanadium and stainless steel are coupled in sulfuric acid solutions, both metals are usually unaffected by contact, whereas the corrosion rate of titanium in sulfuric acid is greatly reduced by contact with vanadium.

"This article details the use of an alternative testing method to the 2004 "Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) Recommendations for Prestressed Rock and Soil Anchors" manual’s recommendations for temporary and permanent rock anchors for applications in shafts and tunnels. This method was developed and used for the Black River Tunnel (BRT) project in Lorain, OH as a means to reduce testing time of rock bolts during shaft construction while maintaining a similar level of quality control and assurance. The following sections will detail the project background, subsurface characteristics, shaft construction, the 2004 PTI testing method and associated difficulties, the alternative testing method and conclusions reached.Project backgroundThe city of Lorain is located in north central Ohio on the south shore of Lake Erie, approximately 40 km (25 miles) west of Cleveland and 119 km (74 miles) east of Toledo. The city chose to build a large-diameter storage tunnel and pump station to meet its requirements to reduce sanitary sewer overflows to the nearby Black River. NTH Consultants Ltd. (NTH) was retained by the city’s prime consultant, Malcolm Pirnie Inc. (now the water division of Arcadis), to perform a geotechnical investigation, develop design and construction bid documents for the tunnel and shaft liner systems and ultimately provide oversight assistance during the construction phase of the project.The BRT is an approximately 1,700-m (5,560-ft) long, 7-m (23-ft) diameter rock tunnel to be lined with a 5.8-m (19-ft) inside diameter secondary concrete lining (Fig. 1). The tunnel is designed to accept flow at a new drop shaft (Shaft 3) located on the west side of the Black River, across from the city of Lorain Black River waste water treatment plant (BRWWTP). The tunnel will be dewatered at the south end by a large diameter pump station (Shaft 1) located in the existing Lorain Port Authority Public Boat Launch. Flow from the new pump station will be discharged into an existing shallow interceptor sewer and directed back to the BRWWTP."

Petro-diesel is a common collector for fine coal froth flotation but partitioning of diesel range organics (DROs) in process streams has not been widely studied. Preliminary research suggested that under normal dosing schemes total residual DRO in process waters should be limited to the sub-ppm water-soluble fraction (WSF). Further, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) should partition proportionately with DRO. The purpose of this study was to confirm these findings in laboratory flotation tests. Total DRO and specific PAHs were measured in tailings and concentrate streams, and coal recovery and ash rejection were tracked. Results show that concentrate waters consistently had higher DRO than tailing waters, and DRO in both streams generally increased with increasing diesel dosage. DRO again appeared to be limited to the WSF and PAHs tended to partition proportionately with DRO. Results indicate optimal flotation performance should generally coincide with minimal DRO partitioning to process waters. Under typical operating conditions residual DRO should not present an environmental concern; however, conditions should be avoided that allow significant overdosing of diesel.

"The technological development observed in recent years has stimulated the application of rare earth (RE) elements. Amongst their various applications it is well worth mentioning their use in electronics, superconductors, nuclear medicine, as well as in special inks - as those used in radar invisible airplanes. TV and computer monitor screens present as coating a powder containing some rare earth elements, mainly Europium and Yttrium. The recovery of the RE elements from electronic scrap is extremely important as the economic and environmental issues are concerned. This paper describes the study of the Eu and Y recovery from e-scraps. The first step of the process was the leaching of the powder obtained by manually scraping the inside surface of the screen. After the optimization of the leaching, the dissolution of Eu and Y was higher than 98 w/t% and a pregnant sulfuric liquor containing 11.9 g L-1 Y and 0.72 g L-1 Eu was obtained. The second step was the separation of the metals found in the liquor by the solvent extraction technique. The separation of Eu and Y was carried out in a counter current circuit compound of 3 extraction stages, 7 scrubbing stages and 15 stripping stages. DEHPA was used as the extractant, whereas a diluted sulfuric acid solution was applied as scrubbing agent and a hydrochloric acid solution at high concentration was used as the stripping agent.INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths (RE) are a moderately abundant group of 17 elements composed of lanthanides, scandium and yttrium. Amongst the RE, promethium (Pm) is extremely rare, however several of the RE elements are not very rare and occur dispersed in a variety of forms (Greenwood & Earnshaw, 1984; Tyler, 2004).The innumerable applications of the RE elements are based on their particular properties, mainly their spectroscopic and magnetic properties (Martins & Isolani, 2005). The technological development observed in recent years has stimulated the application of rare earth (RE) elements. They have been used in agriculture, electronics, superconductors, nuclear medicine, automobile industry, special inks – as those used in radar invisible airplanes, X-ray screens, high intensity mercury vapour light bulbs, neutron scintilators, charged-particle detectors and optical memory reading systems (Maestro & Huguenin, 1995; Nagaosa & Binghua, 1997; Sánchez et al., 1999)."

Calculated equilibrium data are presented for three phases in the flue gas stream from a hypothetical open cycle MHD generator. A typical coal is "burned" with 1.0 gram-mole K2O seed per kilogram coal and with 101 percent of stoichiometric air. Tables of composition and the overt thermodynamic properties, enthalpy and entropy, are given for the temperatures 2200 (-100) 1100 kelvins, pressures 1.0 and 1.5 atmospheres, and slag rejection figures of 90 and 75 percent.

The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

A gravity concentration process was developed to give satisfactory recovery and concentrate grade. The application of high-intensity magnetic separation was also stud1ed. A pilot-plant investigation that confirmed the laboratory testing and provided a commercial-grade concentrate 1s described.

"The natural stage of deep mines operation is a closure of unnecessary shafts. It is extremely important to ensure a proper shaft closure to avoid stability loss and the associated damage to surface facilities in the future. For the still active shafts, it can be done by a dedicated shaft closure design, but even then, depending on the shaft closure method, it may be necessary to perform regular shaft inspections. The paper presents a short overview of shaft closure methods and available tools and devices developed in the last time for such shaft inspections. INTRODUCTION The natural stage of deep mines operation, commonly occurring after depletion of the reserves of mined materials, is a closure of unnecessary shafts. All over the world, the number of liquidated shafts grows continuously and the problem of shafts disposal is especially critical for deep shafts. The typical depth of 600 m of currently liquidated shafts in Poland may already be seen as a challenging task. The greater is the challenge of shaft closure in Germany where the last active coal mines for shafts with a depth of up to 1,300 m have been recently closed. It is therefore extremely important to ensure a proper shaft closure to avoid stability loss and the associated damage to surface facilities in the future. For the still active shafts, it can be done by a dedicated shaft closure design, but even then, depending on the shaft closure method, it may be necessary to perform regular shaft inspections. In many cases, it is more important to inspect old, abandoned shafts, where the wall stability or even liner type are not fully known. SHAFT CLOSURE METHODS Abandoning a shaft is a complicated task, as shafts, being the link between the surface and an underground network of workings, disturb hydrogeological and gaseous conditions in the rock mass (Sztelak, 1991). Closure procedures at older mine sites have been carried out in accordance with earlier legislative requirements. For very old shafts (+100 years), it means in many cases only a sealing of the shaft entrances by means of timber or concrete slabs. In the 20th century, the shafts were also closed by means of filling with grainy materials, but even then the retrospective activities at abandoned mine sites were extremely limited and in most cases no further monitoring measures were performed. The possible consequence of an improper shaft closure and lack of monitoring is presented in Figure 1."

In practical production process, the average of silicon content in hot metal (HM) of COREX process (the average is 1.58%) is obviously higher than that in blast furnace (the value is below 0.6%), which leads to an increase in the cost of steelmaking. In this work, the factors affecting and impact mechanism of silicon content in HM were investigated by statistical analysis using actual operating data. The analysis indicates that the fuel rate, binary basicity of slag and the temperature of HM are positively correlated with the silicon content, while the sulfur content of HM and binary basicity of burden are negatively correlated with the silicon content. On this basis, a back propagation neural network was developed to predict and control the silicon content in HM. All the findings of this work are useful for guiding and optimizing the COREX operation.
