Tensile creep experiments were conducted on high-purity, poly cvystalline rhenium from 1500" to 2300°C at stresses from 1500 to I0,OOO psi in a vacuum of 10-a torr. The apparent activation energy for creep was 60 kcal per mole, and the steady-state creep rate varied directly with stress to the 3.4 power. Dislocation substructure that developed during creep was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Possible rate-controlling deformation mechanisms are discussed. The creep behavior of most metals at elevated temperature can be represented by the following equation:&apos;&apos;&apos; t = Cf(s)(^)(s/E)nD [1] where i = steady-state creep rate, C = constant, f(s) = a function involving microstructure, s = applied stress, E = the average elastic modulus at test temperature, n = constant, D = diffusion coefficient According to this well-established relationship, metals with higher elastic moduli and lower diffusion coefficients should have greater creep resistance at the same stress and temperature and equivalent mi-crostructures. While no diffusion data are available, the diffusivity of rhenium should be less than that for most other refractory metals because of its high melting point and hcp crystal structure. The Sherby-Simnad relation for calculating atomic mobility in metallic systems3 predicts that the diffusion coefficient for rhenium is less than that experimentally determined for tungsten4 in the temperature region 1500. to 2200°C. At these temperatures the elastic modulus for tungsten5 is only slightly larger than the extrapolated modulus for rhenium.6 Thus, rhenium is a good possibility for a a high-temperature structural material, but few data on the creep of rhenium have been reported. This investigation was undertaken to study the high-tempera-ture deformation behavior of rhenium in detail. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The material used in this study was consolidated from high-purity powder. After cold pressing the powder to a plate a in. thick, the billet was sintered in hydrogen at 2250°C for 24 hr. The plate was reduced to 0.100 in. by cold cross rolling with intermediate anneals at 1650°C for 20 min between passes. The plate was further reduced to 0.060 in. by unidirectional cold rolling with similar heat treatments between passes, and then finally stress-relieved in hydrogen at 1650°C for 30 min. Specimens tested at 1900°C and below were pretest-annealed at 1900°C for 2 50 hr. Specimens tested above 1900°C were pretest-annealed at 2400°C for 5 hr. The impurity content in the "as-received" plate was quite low, table I. Essentially no change in impurity levels was detected in specimens after creep testing. All creep tests and annealing treatments were conducted in a vacuum of 10-8 torr in a test furnace heated by a tungsten mesh element. The load was applied to the specimens through a bellows, and stresses were maintained to ±1 pct of the selected value by periodic corrections for changes in specimen cross-sectional area during creep and for changes in the bellows spring force due to load column extension. One-inch-diameter tungsten force rods were used in the hot zone of the furnace. Deformation at temperature was measured by optically tracking gage marks on the specimen. Temperature was measured by a calibrated optical pyrometer and was determined to ±5"C. Grain sizes were determined by the linear intercept method and specimens were examined in the "as-polished" condition, using polarized light. Specimens annealed at 1900°C had a grain size of 52 ± 5µ , and those annealed at 2400°C had a grain size of 148 * 11 µ. Pieces were cut from the gage section of creep-tested specimens and planed to a thickness of about 0.010 in. by spark discharge machining. Thin foils for viewing by transmission electron microscopy were obtained by electropolishing in a solution of 6:3:1 ethyl alcohol, perchloric acid, and butoxy ethanol, respectively, using the window technique. Bath temperature was —4OoC, and the cell potential was 35 v. The foils were examined in Siemens Elmiskop I, operating at 100 kv. Analyses have been performed on geotechnical properties of copper, uranium and phosphate (gypsum) tailings materials, with the intent of identifying typical measures of variability within and among sites, and of characterizing such variability for use in reliability modeling of tailings embankments. In all, data from approximately 41 sites were analysed. Fairly consistent results were obtained for within site variabilities. However no one probabilistic model was found to be applicable to all sites. The distributional forms for most of the data sets are regular, and tend toward Normality when spatial trends are removed. At many of the sites sufficient in situ data were available to allow estimates of vertical autocorrelation distances and measurement noise. Available data indicate that variability in pore pressures may have a more important effect than strength property variation. A major problem in interpreting available strength property data results from the unknown drainage conditions during testing.

The Bureau of Mines has developed prototype instruments promising to improve the ability to warn of imminent roof falls. An unusually good opportunity to test these comparatively under natural caving conditions was afforded by the forecasted caving in August 1977 of a mined-out region of the White Pine Mine. The latter&apos;s rock strata closely resemble those in many coal mines. The anticipated cave was of the competent-roof/weak-pillar type. It occurred as, and when, predicted. Automated convergence and bed separation gages agreed well with the standard manual convergence gage measurements. A micro seismic gage was found to be insensitive to the fall and may require different test conditions for effectiveness. A roof resistivity unit was tested under a separate Bureau of Mines contract. (No. H02720J7). An unplanned addition showed interesting potential.

Analytical procedures are described for the quantitative determination of 16 elements (As, Ba, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, TI, and Zn) and 7 ionic species (NH4, C032-, CI-, F-, NO3-, P043-, SO42-), identification of major and minor mineral components, and measurement of physical properties associated with manganese nodules and nodule processing reject waste materials. Compound identification methods discussed include X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, selective area electron diffraction, and optical and reflected light microscopy. Methods for elemental analysis include atomic absorption spectrophotometry, inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy, neutron activation analysis, fluorescent X-ray spectrography, and ion chromatography. Thermal gravimetric analysis, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, ion specific electrodes, and standard wet chemical procedures are briefly discussed. Physical properties determined in manganese nodule materials include grain size distribution, specific gravity, triaxial shear, permeability, maximum density, Atterberg limits, and slurry density. The results of a round-robin analysis of an ammonia process waste material and manganese nodule standards demonstrate the applicability of the discussed methods. Tests discussed for the evaluation of the waste materials for disposal options include the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) EP toxicity test, the ASTM shake extraction test, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers EPA seawater elutriant test.

SulphuR has long been one of the banes of the steel manufacturer and often no effort and expense have been spared in order to reduce it to a small per cent. in the finished product. This condition is due to a general conviction that in many cases where steels have failed in service, sulphur has been the cause. But there has been a growing feeling in recent years that the verdict against sulphur has been unnecessarily severe. In cases of segregation it was present in. augmented amounts along with other impurities, but it had not caused the segregation. High sulphur in pig iron is caused by poor furnace conditions and the sulphur is merely one indication of an iron that has not been properly reduced. No amount of subsequent treatment under oxidizing conditions in the open-hearth furnace can remedy the defects, although the per cent. of sulphur may be considerably reduced. In other words, the causes of bad steel can frequently be traced back to bad pig iron, and sulphur is merely one indication that the pig iron is bad. The writer recently visited a steel plant where a mass of evidence had been accumulated which substantiated this fact, and the superintendent was emphatic in stating that high sulphur was not harmful provided the steel was not otherwise poor due to insufficient reduction in the blast furnace. The presence of a moderate amount of sulphur is desirable from the standpoint of the man who machines the steel. The low-sulphur material drags and the production of a smooth surface is very difficult. A slight increase in sulphur enables the machinist to produce a smooth surface without difficulty. Since, therefore, such large quantities of steel are subjected to machining, it becomes highly important that the sulphur controversy should be settled, and if its presence is proved to be harmless the ban on it should be lifted. The shut-off value for a panel cave mine determines when a draw point will be shut-off and mining will cease from that draw point. Using a shut-off value strategy for a panel cave mine is similar to using a cut-off value strategy for an open-pit mine. This paper will discuss how to choose an appropriate shut-off value strategy that an engineer can use when planning a panel cave mine to increase the net present value (NPV) of the project. Using a shut-off value equal to the mining and processing cost will provide the total mining reserves for a panel cave mine given a specified footprint. When the net present value analysis method is used to compare one design to another then using a shut-off value greater than the mining and processing cost will generate a higher NPV. This strategy will replace the marginal ore at the top of a draw column with higher grade ore at the bottom of newly opened draw points. A draw column is broken material which sits above a draw point and it is mined to a specified height above the draw point. This height is called the height of draw (HOD). Varying the shut-off value over the life of the mine can increase the NPV even further. This strategy would have a high shut-off value during the early stages of a mine and low shut-off value during the later stages. If the shut-off value is too high then too many tonnes would be left behind the draw point and the overall value of the mine will be decreased. Also with a high shut-off value then the production target may not be maintained due to too many draw points closing too soon.

"The tests described in this paper were conducted under the sponsorship of Subcommittee VII on Pulverizing Characteristics of Coal, a subcommittee of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, American Society for Testing Materials, with a view to evaluating various laboratory procedures for testing grindability of coal in connection with commercial pulverization of coal for use as powdered fuel. The subcommittee, at a meeting in New York City on February 21, 1934, selected for test four methods that had been developed during the past few years for testing grindabilitay of coal and were being used by coal-testing laboratories in the United States and Canada. These methods are:Bureau of Mines method, Cross method, Fuel Research Laboratory method, and Hardgrove method. Subcommittee VII agreed that the grindability tests should be made on five coals selected to cover a wide range of hardness. The Pittsburgh Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, was asked to direct the investigation and to prepare representative samples of the coals. Laboratories of the fol. lowing institutions and companies agreed to cooperate by making grindability tests: Babcock & Wilcox Co., Foster Wheeler Corporation, Fuel Engineering Co., of New York, Fuel Research Laboratory of the Canada Department of Mines, and Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSHelpful suggestions in planning the investigation were made by A. Sibanye-Stillwater recently completed a partial sidewall rebuild on Furnace 1 at its Marikana smelter complex. The project involved matte taphole maintenance, which required the removal and subsequent replacement of 18 composite copper-graphite coolers and a section of the lower refractory sidewall. These composite copper-graphite coolers are a newly developed cooling design by Tenova Pyromet, and this rebuild project provided valuable insight into the performance of the composite coolers. The novel composite cooler design was implemented to serve as a safeguard against localised wear and corrosion in the furnace sidewall, particularly at the slag-concentrate interface, where chloride-accelerated sulphidation has been identified as a dominant degradation mechanism affecting the copper cooling elements. The composite cooler design is unique in that all the exposed sides of the water-cooled copper elements are fully encapsulated in graphite, which protects the copper from corrosive sulphur- and chlorinebearing gases and condensates. This sidewall cooling system was designed to improve corrosion resistance, stabilise freeze lining formation, and extend the campaign life of the furnace sidewall. The partial sidewall rebuild was executed during a planned maintenance shutdown with the main objective of replacing the matte taphole lintel bricks. This paper serves as a case study that compares and evaluates the operational performance of the composite coolers before and after the rebuild. The installation method is discussed to highlight the approach taken to ensure a sound installation while minimising downtime, as well as to present some lessons learned in the process.

The structural models developed by exploration and mining geologists are most commonly concerned with the ‘main structures’ or key constituents that pertain to the associated mineralisation. To this end, it is recognised that the geological and exploration models, which are developed, are essentially ‘fit for task’ and the scale-related variances are not always realised at an early stage. In fact, in many cases anomalous intercepts along different trends and of variable apparent continuity have often been neglected as ‘back scatter’ and not important. Recognition of the importance of subordinate structures as mineralising hosts suggests that additional opportunities exist outside the primary and main structures. History shows that opportunities are often not realised where gold is hosted in orientations not parallel to the predominant trend of the schistosity, main fault or shear zone.Another reason for the importance of subordinate structures can be understood from their roles in a percolation network. Subordinate structures can access the large fluid fluxes provided by backbone elements, but, as dangling elements, they provide greater opportunities for gold precipitation mechanisms and hence may constitute essential parts of the resource. Therefore, the role, understanding and consideration of the smaller-scale and orthogonal structures should be considered during all facets of exploration, resource development, delineation and mining.

This report outlines the experimental procedures for using a Burnett apparatus to obtain compressibility coefficients for multiphase, multicomponent fluid mixtures. The conventional Burnett method is described briefly whereby multiphase compressibility data can be obtained by first determining the compressibility factor, Z, as an isothermal function of pressure alone. Then starting at conditions of temperature and pressure where Z is known, the fluid is cooled at constant volume to some lower temperature at which the resulting pressure is measured, and a corresponding value of Z is obtained from a fundamental relationship between compressibility factors, pressures, and temperatures at constant volume. The isochoric treatment of the fluid, extended to still lower temperatures and along other isochors, eventually results in compressibility determinations for the whole two-phase system thus covered experimentally.

A review was made of two Russian books and a chapter from a third book dealing with pipeline transport of coal. Emphasis was placed on hydrotransport of coarse coal in underground mines or surface pipelines. The books reviewed were: "Means of Increasing the Effectiveness of Hydrotransport," by V. N. Pokrovskaya (1972), "Parameters and Modes of Hydraulic Transport of Coal" by V. V. Traynis (1970), and the chapter "Calculations of Hydrotransport of Useful Minerals and Waste Rock" from the book "Hydromechanization of Opencast Workings" by G. A. Nurok (1970). All three are unique and useful additions to the world literature on hydrotransport. The Traynis book reveals the development and results of circular wheel stand tests to simulate hydrotransport in horizontal pipes, which is a potentially outstanding contribution to slurry pipeline technology. Graphical data and equations are presented which suggest that headlosses for coarse coal can be predicted with good accuracy for pipe sizes up to 14 inches in diameter. Wheel stands permit tests for pipe wear and lump degradation without recycling coal through pumps. Recommendations are made for wheel stand tests and for correlation of existing data.

(Hons.) in chemistry (1949) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Mr G. C. Thompson matriculated at Dale College in 1951. He then attended the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.8c. (Min. Eng.) in 1959. Mr P. T. Fewell was born and educated in the United Kingdom. After obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) in 1958 at Sheffield University, he emigrated to South Africa. DtP. R. Jochens, Pr. Eng., has been a member of Council since 1974, serving as President in 1980-1981.

En ese sentido, la estimación de los contenidos metálicos, y el volumen que será asignado influyen como elementos en la simulación secuencial de una variable categórica del proyecto de Río Branco. Por ello, el presente trabajo plantea el modelo geométrico de una unidad geológica mineralizada (cuerpo de la zona supérgena del proyecto Rio Blanco) como el más adecuado en la simulación condicional secuencial geoestadística de variables categóricas variables (roca, mineral). De forma que se pretende calcular un volumen aceptable que responda a criterios estructurales y litológicos al mismo tiempo.

Two DFI committees independently organized two complimentary panel sessions for the recent American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) Geo- Risk 2023 "Advances in Theory and Innovation in Practice" Conference in Arlington, Virginia, July 23-26. The Geo- Institute (GI) specialty conference welcomed more than 200 professionals and students interested in risk from around the world to the Washington, D.C., area for three full days of plenary keynote lectures, papers and no-paper sessions. The GI Risk Assessment and Management Technical Committee organized the event, which is the third in a series planned on a 6-year cycle. The previous two events were in 2011 in Atlanta and 2017 in Denver.

TBMand roadheader are two dominating excavation machines in underground tunnelling projects. The performance of these two tunnelling machines has been reviewed and analysed individually by many researchers from multiple points of view. However, there are almost no studies that have made an extensive comparison between these two machines, mostly from financial points of view. The current study is intended to characterize both financial and technical status of these two mechanical tunnelling machines in one of the biggest coal mines in Iran. The main objective of this study is to define the best method and equipment that meets a predefined economic goal, which is mainly to maximize the net present value. To this end, a technical and financial model based on the geomechanical and financial parameters involved in the project has been prepared and the financial part of the project has been carried out by applying COMFAR III financial analysis software. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis of the model was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of involved parameters on the project. According to the results, a roadheader has better economic justification than a TBM, while the TBM has a better advance rate than the roadheader.

The recovery of silver and gallium from flue dust with acidified thiourea solutions was examined. The studied parameters were temperature, particle size, thiourea concentration, acid concentration, and the presence of oxidants. The study of the extraction of these two metals was undertaken in sulfuric acid medium. Silver dissolution was dependent on all examined parameters, whereas gallium extraction was only dependent on the initial acid concentration. The experimental results suggest a new very efficient method for recovery of both silver and gallium. Almost complete recovery of silver and gallium can be accomplished within 90 minutes. A technological scheme for recovery of both metals is also proposed.
