Powder metallurgy processing of commercial Raney nickel powders was examined. The typical angular particle shape, in conjuction with aluminum present in a eutectic phase, facilitated interlocking leading to excellent green strength after compaction. Density and porosity as influenced by the compacting pressure were studied over the range of 37.5 to 207 meganewton per square meter (MN/m2). Sintering in an inert atmosphere from 575° to 850° C caused a volume increase which is attributed to a solid state reaction between Al and Ni2Al3 phases. The reaction is 3Al + Ni2Al3 ? 2NiA13. A thermal pretreatment of 70 hours at 700° C was required to prevent this reaction from occurring during sintering. Density and porosity as a function of compacting pressure and sintering temperature were determined after a thermal pretreatment of the powder.

"Damage is classifi ed as loss in the integrity or deterioration in the quality of rock massand is infl uenced by methodology of excavation on the geo-technical properties of rockmass. Overbreak, on the other hand, is the result of damage and is quantifi ed in either of the terms viz., extra mucking, shot-creting, application of extra support system and extension of scheduled completion time. Damage or overbreak in rock mass by the impact of blasting, is generally unavoidable but, the magnitude can be minimized so that it does not deteriorate the quality or integrity of structure. The paper, here, analyses magnitude of overbreak of a powerhouse cavern with respect to different blast patterns implemented at the site. The magnitude of overbreak was analyzed in terms of profi le measurement with the help of laser profi ler and percentage of halfcast markings observed on the periphery rock wall. The paper revealed the impact of decoupling ratio, blast pattern and geometry of blasting patch on the magnitude of overbreak. The authors observed that presence of un-favourable joint pattern or foliation plane along the periphery rock wall couldn’t contain magnitude of overbreak within allowable limit. The analyses revealed that percentage of half-cast markings on periphery rock wall was infl uenced by response of rock towards detonation of explosive and cannot be a single parameter to assess the effectiveness of a blast. The analyses also revealed that magnitude of overbreak for down-stream wall was more than that observed in up-stream wall."

Fios ortodônticos de NiTi são alternativas para substituição dos materiais convencionais para a mesma utilização. Quando comparado ao aço inoxidável, NiTi apresenta resistência à corrosão semelhante e características mecânicas superiores, uma vez que produz forças de menor intensidade e constantes numa grande faixa de deformação. Foram caracterizados grupos de fios ortodônticos de dois fabricantes, com diferenças no tipo de ativação e em seus diâmetros. Foram utilizadas microscopia eletrônica de varredura e espectroscopia de energia dispersiva para caracterização superficial e de composição dos fios. As fases presentes foram avaliadas por difração de raios X e ensaios mecânicos de dobramento de três pontos e tração foram conduzidos de forma a avaliar suas propriedades mecânicas. Todas as amostras apresentaram conteúdo de níquel acima de 50,5 at.%. Os fios superelásticos apresentaram recuperação total de forma em ambos os testes mecânicos e os fios termoativados apresentaram recuperação parcial de forma. Os difratogramas obtidos para todos os grupos apresentaram apenas fase austenítica anteriormente ao carregamento. Todos os fios superelásticos apresentaram maior força no descarregamento quando comparados com os termoativados.

A micro-scale investigation was carried out by applying an atomic force microscope (AFM) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy to study in situ the adsorption of three different collectors — oleic acid, octanohydroxamic acid (HA) and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA) — on bastnaesite in aqueous solutions. The results show that all three collectors adsorb on bastnaesite. The hydroxamic acid collectors — HA and SHA — adsorb on bastnaesite mainly in the form of insoluble metal hydroxamate. Their specific adsorption mechanism indicates that high selectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of bastnaesite.

A new pillar strength formula is presented, incorporating a function P of size and shape, which takes into account the size-shape interaction effect as well as the enhanced strength exhibited by wide pillars. Existing pillar formulas, lacking these capabilities, are not suitable for extrapolating small-specimen test results to mine-pillar sizes and shapes. Interpreting compressive-strength test results as function of P clearly reveals wide-pillar behavior in much old test data. Model relationships are discussed, along with their scaling implications.

Mining and processing of raw materials is one of the earliest activities of man for survival and development. The products are used for making jewelleries, metal tools, and for exchange of goods and services. However, despite the benefits of mine recoveries, it’s negative and long term effects on the environment and lives remain the point of discussion throughout the world. This study summarizes findings of researches in active/abandoned lead–zinc mines in Enyigba and Ishiagu mining districts including social surveys in the localities surrounding the mines in order to ascertain the effects on the inhabitants. Lead–zinc mining in Enyigba and Ishiagu, southeastern Nigeria has lasted for decades and has affected the socio-economic well-being of the host communities. There are evidences of soil, water, and plants contamination by Pb, Zn, Cd, and Mn in these mining communities. The mining activities also affect the overall social development of the host communities. These effects include retardation in educational development, health care provision, unemployment, and access to potable water supply. Others are rise in poverty level, social amenities, sanitary/hygiene level, high cost of living, and fertility rate. Possible mitigation strategies such as to liaising with relevant government agencies in collaboration with mine owner, mine workers, and host communities can ameliorate these negative effects and promote environmental sustainability.

Alluvial platinum was recovered during gold mining operations in Maud Creek, a tributary of the Howard River. Average electron probe analyses give Pt 88.75, Fe 5.27, Ir 0.70, Os 1.06, Pd 0.34, Ru 0.14, Rh 1.29, Cu 1.06. Rare grains of a Pt-Fe-Cu alloy are also present and an unusual feature of all grains is the relatively high rhodium content which finds expression in segregations of rhodium arsenide, cherepanovite. Platinum is found in the Orepuki area of Southland, where it is probably partly derived from the mafic rocks of the Longwood Complex. Rocks of the Rotoroa Complex, similar to those of the Longwood Complex, form bedrock in Maud Creek and are possibly the source of the Howard platinum. Alternatively, it might be derived by glacial transport from the Matakitaki ultramafic block 30 km to the southwest. Origin from the Rotoroa rocks is preferred as, if the Matakitaki rocks are part of the Dun Mountain Ophiolites, they might be expected to contain osmiridium rather than platinum. The ratio Pt:Ir-Os has been widely used to distinguish low Pt:Ir-Os ophiolitic from high Pt:Ir-Os gabbroic assemblages. Mafic complexes such as Longwoods, Darran, Rotoroa, and Riwaka might be expected to show similar high Pt:Ir-Os ratios and be targets for platinum exploration. Detrital platinum examined from the Parapara area, Golden Bay is mainly osmiridium, with rare grains of rutheniridosmine, very similar in composition to that found in concentrates from the Kaniere dredge, West Coast.

"Exploration for copper, in a region of 7,000 square miles on the Arctic coast between longitudes 114 and 118 degrees west, has covered a period of nearly 200 years. Occurrences of native copper, used by the natives for tools and weapons, have been reported since the early part of the eighteenth century. In J 771 Samuel Hearne of the Hudson's Bay Company, in the course of his classic 3-year journey from Fort Churchill, became the first white man to see the deposits, and incidentally the first to reach the Canadian Arctic coast by land. During the next 140 years the deposits were mentioned by every explorer and traveller who passed through the area. A good historical summary of this literature has been presented by Tyrrell (1912).In 1911-12 the Douglas-Sandberg party did the first geological mapping along the Coppermine River and Dismal Lakes (Douglas, J., 1913; Douglas, G. M., 1914), and described the copper occurrences there. In 1914 J. J. O'Neill (1924) of the Canadian Arctic Expedition investigated the showings on Bathurst Inlet. In 1929-31 two Canadian exploration companies sent prospectors and geologists to the area (Gilbert, 1931; Norrie, 1931; Duncan, 1931). Since that time only brief references have been published (Kidd, 1931; Stockwell and Kidd, 1931; Lord, 1941, 1951; Washburn, 1947). In 1943-45 an area of more than 1,500 square miles was prospected by American Metal Co. of Canada, Ltd., under the direction of the writer. Forty-nine showings were examined; seven of these were mapped in detail by plane-table and two were sampled by 27 short diamond drill holes totalling 3,061 feet. All holes were in permanently frozen rock, and the deepest vertical distance reached was 206 feet. Five groups of claims were staked. These later lapsed, but one of the groups was restaked in 1951, and assessment drilling and some trenching were carried out in 1952-53. Results were disappointing, and the claims have been allowed to lapse.The area is within the Arctic Circle, northeast of Great Bear Lake and 360 miles north of Yellowknife on Great Slave Lake. For exploration purposes, access is by aircraft from Yellowknife. During the short open season heavy freight can be brought by sea to Coppermine at the mouth of the river, either from Aklavik at the mouth of the Mackenzie or around Alaska. Concentrates would have to be moved by these routes.Although none of the deposits so far found is mineable under present conditions, the total volume of copper in the numerous showings marks the district as a major area of copper mineralization, which may some day be of economic importance."

In April 1989, Southern Company Services signed a 3.5 year contract with DOE-PETC for generic engineering development of an advanced physical fine coal cleaning technology known as selective agglomeration. This technology offers the potential for significantly higher pyritic sulfur removal (90% +) than conventional coal cleaning (30 to 50%) while maintaining high Btu recovery (90% +). Engineering development will include bench-scale process development; component development; adaption or modification of existing unit operations; proof-of-concept (POC) module design, fabrication, testing and evaluation; and small commercial facility conceptual design. The information obtained during POC operation will be sufficient to result in a technical and economic design base that can support construction and operation of a small commercial plant. The major goal of the research is to develop selective agglomeration technology to achieve 90% pyritic sulfur removal while operating at Btu recoveries above 90% based on run-of-mine quality coal. This objective will be accomplished in two phases: Phase 1 -bench-scale and component development, and Phase 2 -POC module operation and conceptual design of a small commercial plant. Currently, work is proceeding under Phase 1 (Tasks 1-7) of the project. A review of the status of Tasks 1-7 is presented in this paper.

El reencauche de neumáticos es un proceso que consiste en adicionar, previa evaluación y reparación, una capa de caucho al casco original, de manera que se pueda reutilizar y evitar consumir uno nuevo. Si bien este proceso no es una práctica común, pues se tiene la creencia de que no es rentable, en Minera Las Bambas se viene implementando con éxito. En el 2017, para una flota de 44 camiones Komatsu 930, se desecharon 542 neumáticos en la medida 53/80 R 63, mientras que en el 2018, al reencauchar 130 neumáticos, se desecharon 187 neumáticos menos, equivalentes a 654.5 toneladas anuales. Esto, replicado por los 30 años de estimado de vida de la mina, resulta en 19 635 toneladas menos de desechos contaminantes, con lo que se logra una reducción considerable del impacto en el medio ambiente.

Work to improve employees' behavior in Głogów Copper Smelter began in 2009. It has been noted that over 90% of accidents at work are attributable to human reasons. At that time, a series of external workshops was contracted based on exercises conducted by a psychologist trainer with supervisors. Having trained about 300 employees, an observation of employee behavior at workstations was started as part of the control of risk reduction measures. As a result of the above actions, the number of accidents was reduced by half between 2009 and 2017. Currently, internal workshops for communication improvement for behavioral auditors are conducted by the employees of the Smelter. Named: "I observe, react and communicate" and aimed at further mastering the elements of the safety culture in Głogów Copper Smelter. INTRODUCTION KGHM Polska Miedz is an integrated mining and smelting copper producer based in Poland and operates on the international metal market. KGHM, with annual production of over 500 thousand tonnes of copper, holds a middle position in the world ranking of copper producers. At the same time, in Europe it is the largest producer of copper from its own ore deposits, possessing its own integrated production structure, from underground mining operations to final, top-quality product. It is also worth mentioning that KGHM Polska Miedź is one of the largest Polish exporters and, apart from copper, is a significant primary silver producer in the world. The mission of our company, consistent with its strategy, is to produce copper and silver in a safe mode for workers and the environment, with reduced environmental impact. Therefore, "Głogów" Copper Smelter operations are continuously focused on the creation of safe working conditions, and minimizing the negative effects on the environment. The efficiency of the electrowinning process of zinc depends on the performance of oxygen evolution reaction, anode quality and corrosion resistance of lead anodes. Original surfaces of rolled commercial lead-silver anodes were examined using conventional polarisation methods in acid zinc sulfate electrolyte with manganese sulphate at 38 °C. The self-discharge method (potential decay) following 5 h polarisation at 50 mA cm-2 was considered to evaluate electrochemical activity, oxygen overpotential and anode stability. The influence of silver content is compared to that of the microstructure, the fabrication process and the composition of the corrosion products. Polished anode samples have also been examined for microstructural and corrosion performance studies. The experiments show that the duration of the plateau at 1600 mV versus SHE, the potential level (active corrosion state/stationary state) and the rate AEco/At during the decay could be a good indicator to compare the corrosion rates of the anodes in industrial zinc electrolytes.

During 1959-61, the Bureau of Mines investigated the strain and deformation induced in rock and concrete linings around mine openings by retreat panel caving at the Climax Molybdenum mine. Two concrete-lined slusher drifts on the Phillipson level of the mine were instrumented with both electrical strain gages and extensometers. Changes in strain and deformation were recorded over an 18-month period during the undercutting and caving of the mining panel. General agreement was found between the strain and deformation measurements and the hypothesis that the vertical component of the stress field on the openings is almost completely removed by undercutting. This phenomenon is a possible explanation for the structural failures that occur in the slusher drifts during the undercutting cycle.

Destructive Thermal Technology (DTT) is used in the management of various waste streams. DTT includes Destructive Distillation, Pyrolysis and Classical Incineration. Recent work has more clearly defined the differences in these technologies based upon a more rigorous thermochemical approach. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has chosen Classical Incineration as the Best Developed Available Technology (BDAT) for the management of hazardous organic wastes. Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) and Sewage Sludges (SS) are also managed using Classical Incineration. Three environmental problems plague the use of Classical Incineration. Destructive Distillation, on the other hand, avoids these problems. It is an environmentally benign DTT for managing a wide variety of organic waste streams, including hazardous wastes. Thermochemical analysis of the available data on the performance of three types of DTT will be discussed.

"The availability of real-time data in any process control system is critical for effective management of that system. At MMG LXML Sepon Copper Operation in Lao PDR, controlling the copper grade of the feed to the leaching circuit is paramount for maximising both productivity and copper recovery. Since 2008, real-time analysis data has been available to the process engineers from the Geoscan on-belt analyser installed on the Copper Mill feed conveyor, and highly accurate results on copper grade have allowed the process engineers to strictly control blending to overcome the variability in plant feed grade. The availability of real-time analysis data is crucial, as effective sampling of this stream is both difficult and error-prone, being only a snapshot in time of highly variable ore stockpiles, as well as having significant laboratory turnaround delays. Periodic sampling is used to verify the Geoscan data as accurate. Since its installation, the copper result has been the most critical output of the Geoscan. In recent times, the process engineers have sought to utilise other results from the Geoscan to further improve and control the process. One measurement of particular interest involves the real-time measurement of calcium and magnesium as a gauge of ore feed gangue acid consumption. To satisfy this end, accurate measurement of calcium and magnesium is becoming increasingly more important and has been the subject of ongoing collaboration between Sepon and Scantech, the manufacturer of the Geoscan. "Current empirical Semi Autogneous Grinding (SAG) mill models contain assumptions concerning the amount of energy available for particle breakage, how this energy is distributed in the mill media and the rate at which the energy is transferred. Despite these assumptions the JK SAG model is highly functional with a proven track record. DEM provides a numerical framework to greatly improve on these assumptions that were necessary due to a lack of available input data.This paper identifies key outputs of the Discrete Element Method (DEM), such as energy spectra and impact probability distribution. It describes how they can be incorporated into current mill models utilising practical rock breakage data. The rate at which energy is transferred is shown to be dependent on particle position and mill rotational speed and not once per cycle as previously assumed. Based upon this an improved energy transfer methodology is presented. The fundamental outputs of the DEM are validated against experimental three-dimensional particle tracking data, so as to establish whether the DEM produces correct energy transfer predictions on the inter-particle level, which is crucial to this work."

In block cave mining, rock fragmentation is a key parameter that influences the production level design and mine planning. Fragmentation occurs mainly by natural breakage during the caving process and in the draw column. The breakage that occurs within the column is known as secondary fragmentation. Secondary fragmentation has been successfully described using the block caving comminution model, which replicates the fragmentation mechanics between particles under drawn and vertical loads in a draw column. This model is based on a kinetic and population balance approach, in which non-normalized and normalized assumptions can be used depending on material and comminution system behaviour. In this paper, the non-normalized and normalized approaches are applied and compared to laboratory data to determine which assumption should be used for secondary breakage in block caving. Approaches are compared graphically, with the mean square error and the Fisher test with a false-rejection probability of 0.05. Based on a statistical analysis, the results show that the normalized model can be applied to all the rock types tested.

São apresentados e discutidos os resultados da caracterização de concretos nanoestruturados do sistema Al2O3-SiC-C para canal de corrida. Foram avaliadas três composições, denominadas A, B e C, ligadas por sílica coloidal. Os corpos de prova para determinação das propriedades físicas e químicas foram moldados em escala laboratorial com auxílio de forma metálica. O concreto A foi desenvolvido por um fabricante nacional. O concreto B é o concreto A modificado, ou seja, contém uma fase extra. O ajuste da composição A visou adequar as propriedades desse concreto às variáveis de processos da Usiminas. Os resultados de testes laboratoriais indicaram que o concreto modificado (B) apresentou desempenho compatível ao do concreto C, tradicionalmente utilizado na Usiminas. As principais vantagens dessa geração de concretos ligados por sílica coloidal são bombeamento estável e reduzido tempo de secagem.

Collins Engineers has been researching and implementing the use of drones on Civil Engineering Projects since 2015. Applications include bridge inspection, asset management, mapping, construction site management and emergency response. Recently this technology was used to map and model construction sites with deep foundations to verify and quantify designs. The ability to collect and use large amounts of data is transforming our world. Drone hardware and software is being used to capture and digitally replicate assets, giving owners unprecedented ability to visualize and manage their projects. Our teams help owners collect and process drone data into deliverables to be analyzed, annotated, stored, and shared. The use of drones can transform the way projects are managed and can improve project workflows. Data collected with drones can be processed into a digital twin of any project site or asset. This digital twin provides owners with a three-dimensional geometrically and geospatially accurate model. These models can be annotated and tagged with information that can be stored and shared locally or on cloud-based platforms. The data can be exported and used in a wide variety of CAD and GIS platforms. Goals When considering the use of UAS for several items need to be considered when establishing project goals. Safety Drones can be used to reduce job site safety risks in two ways. The first is that use of the drone can remove personnel from harm’s way. Surveyors and other project staff will traditionally walk the site to collect survey and other site information. These efforts can be replaced with the use of a drone eliminating much of the need for personnel to be on the job site itself which improves safety. The other way safety can be improved is that a digital model of a job site can be created on a daily or weekly basis that can be quickly analyzed for safety hazards. This analysis could be done remotely by safety officers to identify job site hazards which can then be corrected before injuries happen. Improved Deliverables Perhaps the most important reason to incorporate drones into project workflows it the ability to improve the project deliverables. Drones have the ability to quickly collect large amounts of high quality data which can be processed into orthomosaics, point clouds and 3D models that give engineers and project managers the information they need to make better decisions on design or project management.

The appraisal of mineral resources of the Challis National Forest, Idaho, by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, was made so that the mineral resources of the forest could be appropiately considered in land use planning. Information from this study is intended to tip the U.S. Forest Service to incorporate mineral resource data into forest plans The study was done in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, which released a companion report on the geology and mineral potential of the Challis National Forest in 1989. This summary report is derived from a more detailed USBM Open-File Report (MLA 6-91) that includes descriptions of mines and prospects, commodity profiles, and development cost models. Since the 1860's mines within the Challis National Forest have produced mineral commodities worth more than $590 million at current (1989) commodity prices. Identified mineral resources have a gross value of about $2 billion at current prices, including 8 strategic or critical minerals. The U.S. Bureau of Mines study identified and described 723 active and inactive mineral properties within the forest. Mineral properties with identified resources were evaluate to determine their economic significance, and an assessment was made of the feasibility of mineral development. Of the 2,516,191 acres in the Challis National Forest, about 390,000 acres were classified as having mining development interest. Commercially important mineral production, mainly of molybdenum, gold, and silver from the Challis National Forest is likely for the foreseeable future.
