Metallic mercury has been extensively used for gold recovery. Although the solubility and mobility of metallic mercury is low, this metal can undergo many transformations, leading to mercury contamination in humans. The complexity of Hg chemistry in the environment reflects its different possible oxidation states and species, with different physical-chemical properties. The interaction of Hg in the terrestrial system, as well as in the aquatic environment, is important to understand the mercury cycle. This paper reports data on the adsorption of Hg onto an Oxisol soil. Results show that the interaction of Hg(II) at the soil-solution interface depends strongly on ligand concentration in solution, which can affect Hg mobility. The presence of the chloride anion in solution increases the mobility of Hg(II) through the soil, due to a relative lower affmity of mercury chloride at the oxide surface. In the absence of chloride, Hg(II) form strong complexes with the surface, and its adsorption behaviour is similar to the adsorption of other hydrolizable cations.

A soldagem GTAW tem importância fundamental para a indústria não só pelo excelente controle do aporte térmico, como também ao fato de proporcionar, repetitividade e reprodutibilidade. No entanto, este apresenta uma série de desafios, principalmente em relação à determinação de algumas variáveis e como essas podem afetar a resistência das juntas soldadas. Neste trabalho, investigou-se a influência de diferentes procedimentos de soldagem em tubos de aço SAE 4130 sem costura com e sem a deposição e com a aplicação ou não de pré-aquecimento. Após procedimentos de soldagem, as propriedades mecânicas e a microestrutura da junta soldada, zona fundida, zona termicamente afetada e metal base, foram avaliadas por meio de ensaios de microdureza, de dobramento e análise metalográfica. Foi possível avaliar a influência da aplicação do pré-aquecimento e analisar as propriedades mecânicas e microestrutura das juntas soldadas. Os perfis de microdureza revelaram a importância do pré-aquecimento. O ensaio de dobramento possibilitou a avaliação das juntas de maneira qualitativa. Porém, um ensaio quantitativo, como o de tração, possibilitaria mais informações.

Obtaining a representative sample of bulk materials in process industries is critical to providing valid data for process control and custody transfer (valuation). The accuracy of a sample, that is to say how well the sample represents the material in the process, is directly related to how well the process can be controlled and to how much a product may be worth. Sampling accuracy then is in fact related to bottom line profitability.Sampling theory offers information and equations on how to take a representative sample from a process, however, the actual practice of extracting a sample from the process can be more of an art.Key sampling variables include product specifications such as bulk density, particle distribution, material conveyance, practical sampler location, sampler type and sample frequency and volume/mass.This paper discusses basic sampling theory, sampling methods, types of samplers, how to develop a ‘real world’ sampling system and current manual and automated samplers.Key points include ‘practical precision and variance’, material properties, flow properties, direct sampling versus indirect sampling, sampler types and applications.CITATION:Powalisz, J E, 2014. Crushers are designed and manufactured to survive the severe duty of mining environments worldwide. Under these conditions the crusher performance and availability is one of the critical factors in the mine?s production and profitability. Traditionally the development of these machines tends to be experience-based, incremental improvements in design due to challenges of different applications, duty, or manufacturing. In order to better serve the mining industry a new approach was taken to the design of primary crushers. This approach was to focus on safety and maintenance activities. The result of this effort is a new generation of gyratory crushers that can be serviced from above. Using the features of this new generation of crushers to their fullest extent crushing installations have improved safety, reduced design and construction costs, and lowered maintenance requirements. This presentation explores the benefits of two crusher installations utilizing top service crushers.

"FIRST OF ALL I should like to express to the members my sincere thanks for having had the privilege of serving them as President during the year now ending, to the Council for their guidance, and to the Secretary-Treasurer for his untiring efforts on both the Society's and my behalf during my year of office.During the .past five years the Canadian •Coal picture has changed considerably. In the West, production has been almost halved and many mines have been closed, due to the development and expansion of oil and natural gas industries, which, with some imported residual oil -on the Pacific coast -have provided competition which has been impossible to meet. The two major railway companies have embarked on an oil-burning and dieselization .programme and with this has .been lost one of the largest available markets for coal. Natural gas pipe-line installations still further threaten the remaining outlets for Western coal.In the East, retention of markets has also been a •problem, due to the intense competition provided by imported American •coal and the importation of residual oil.Because of cost it is impossible for central industrial Canada to be supplied with .coal from the Maritimes and markets are, therefore, restricted to fringe areas in Ontario and Quebec, and the Maritime Provinces.The dieselization programme of the Canadian National Rail ways has meant the loss of a large market for Nova Scotian coal and it is fair to assume that within a comparatively short time the market will be completely lost."

Durante estudos de síntese hidrotérmica (realizada em presença de ácido acético e em autoclave à temperatura de 160oC) com o propósito de obter-se boemita a partir de uma gibsita comercial, observou-se uma morfologia diferenciada nos cristais de boemita obtidos: os mesmos apresentaram-se na forma de placas finas de perfil pseudohexagonal. No entanto, quando a síntese é conduzida nas mesmas condições de temperatura somente em água destilada, a morfologia da boemita formada é a de cristais cúbicos. No intuito de tentar entender o mecanismo do crescimento dos cristais de boemita na presença de íons acetato, foram realizadas novas sínteses, envolvendo o mesmo procedimento de preparação, porém variando os meios nos quais a reação ocorre. A partir de novas sínteses realizadas com acetato de potássio em meio aquoso neutro (pH=7) ou ácido (pH=2), foi observado que a presença do íon acetato no meio reacional é determinante para a obtenção da morfologia lamelar. A estrutura cristalina dos cristais obtidos foi caracterizada por DRX e a sua morfologia foi examinada por MEV.

This presentation will cover: the importance of high-quality safety leadership; insights from a Safety Climate Survey that includes responses from 7903 employees working at 19 Australian mining organisations; the results of a critical control verification (CCV) coaching intervention; and recommendations for improving safety leadership in high-risk work settings. Safety climate is a representation of the deeper culture that exists in an organisation. Safety climate is predictive of behaviour, performance and reporting in organisations. Leaders play an important role in the establishment and maintenance of culture. Perceptions of safety climate were collected from 19 Australian mines (n = 7903 employees). These results indicate that the Australian mining sector is doing well in team support for safety and supervisor safety commitment. There were negative perceptions of willingness to report errors, employee involvement in safety initiatives, psychological safety and emergency readiness. Perceptions of safety leadership were in the fair range, with recognising behaviours perceived lowest, falling in the poor range. The underreporting rate was at 25 per cent indicating that 1 in 4 incidents are not being reported. Analyses exploring climate, leadership, safety behaviour and well-being will also be discussed. The integrity and success of critical risk management systems is often determined by the quality of safety leadership. Leaders need a mix of technical safety knowledge and interpersonal skills to be able to support the workforce to build critical control knowledge that invites open and collaborative discussions to find new or improved solutions. Forty leaders at a major mining operation completed training and 5-weeks of coaching focused on developing critical control verification competencies. The follow-up evaluation demonstrated significant improvements in relationship building, observation of controls and overall capability. Overall, insights from multi-organisation climate data and a prepost coaching intervention will be discussed and recommendations and practical guidance for leaders will be provided.

From time to time, one of the authors has had occasion to investigate the graphitizing reaction and has published the results mainly as discussion' of the work of other investigators. In view, therefore, of the diversity of both observations and interpretation, it seemed well to attempt, a revision of the entire subject in the Research Laboratory of the National Malleable Castings Co. The work consisted of a careful study of a single, impure, iron-carbon alloy. The material, which may be considered typical low-carbon white cast iron of the malleable industry, was an air-furnace iron of the following composit,ion: carbon 2.30 per cent., silicon 1.20 per cent., manganese 0.29 per cent., phosphorus 0.156 per cent., sulfur 0.048 per cent. The freezing range extended from 1213' to 1132' C., the latter figure agreeing with Gontermann's data.2 We have attempted to define the equilibrium diagram of this alloy, in the stable condition as related to the mctastable diagr,aui,- from a temperature somewhat below the euteetic freezing point to a temperature l>clow Arl and for a graphitic-carbon content from practically notliing to the original total rarbon of the specimen (see Fig. 6). "Abstract - Rare-element pegmatites may host several economic commodities, such as tantalum (Taoxide minerals), tin (cassiterite), lithium (ceramic-grade spodumene and petalite), and cesium (pollucite). Key geological features that are common to pegmatites in the Superior province of Ontario and Manitoba, Canada, and in other large tantalum deposits worldwide, can be used in exploration.An exploration project for rare-element pegmatites should begin with an examination of a regional geology map. Rare-element pegmatites occur along large regional-scale faults in greenschist and amphibolite facies metamorphic terranes. They are typically hosted by mafic metavolcanic or metasedimentary rocks, and are located near peraluminous granite plutons (A/CNK > 1.0). Once a peraluminous granite pluton has been identified, then the next step is to determine if the pluton is barren or fertile. Fertile granites have elevated rare element contents, Mg/Li ratio < 10, and Nb/Ta ratio < 8. They commonly contain blocky K-feldspar and green muscovite. Key fractionation indicators can be plotted on a map of the fertile granite pluton to determine the fractionation direction: presence of tourmaline, beryl, and ferrocolumbite; Mn content in garnet; Rb content in bulk K-feldspar; and Mg/Li and Nb/Ta ratios in bulk granite samples. Pegmatite dikes with the most economic potential for Li-Cs-Ta deposits occur the greatest distance (up to 10 km) from the parent granite.Metasomatized host rocks are an indication of a nearby rare-element pegmatite. Metasomatic aureoles can be identified by their geochemistry: elevated Li, Rb, Cs, B, and F contents; and by their mineralogy: presence of tourmaline, (Rb, Cs)-enriched biotite, holmquistite, muscovite, and rarely garnet.Once a pegmatite dike has been located, the next step is to assess its potential to contain Ta mineralization. Pegmatites with the highest degree of fractionation (and thus the most economic potential for Li-Cs-Ta) contain blocky K-feldspar with >3,000 ppm Rb, K/Rb < 30, and >100 ppm Cs; and coarsegrained green muscovite with >2,000 ppm Li, >10,000 ppm Rb, >500 ppm Cs, and >65 ppm Ta. Pegmatites with Ta mineralization usually contain Li-rich minerals (e.g., spodumene, petalite, lepidolite, elbaite, amblygonite, and lithiophilite) and may contain Cs-rich minerals (e.g., pollucite, Cs-rich beryl). The ore minerals of Ta are commonly manganotantalite, manganocolumbite, wodginite, and microlite; Ta-rich cassiterite is also commonly present. Tantalum mineralization tends to occur in albitic aplite, mica-rich (lepidolite, cleavelandite ± lepidolite), and spodumene/petalite pegmatite zones."

"Introduction.Powdered or pulverized coal is extensively used as a fuel, the total annual consumption*** in the United States being about 12.000,000 tons, and growing steadily. As the coal is usually pulverized so that 70 per cent or more parses through a 200-mesh sieve, it presents difficulties in sieving, because such finely divided material tends to clog the meshes. A fineness test is desirable in order to judge the efficiency of the pulverizing apparatus, and as an indication of the particle size of the coal being burned.Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, American Society for Testing Materials, has recognized the desirability' of a standard method for determination of fineness of powdered coal. The Bureau of Mines, in co-operation with this Committee, conducted sieving tests on two standard samples of powdered coal, which are described in this paper. As a result of this work a method for making fineness tests, by band sieving, is recommended as a standard method, while a rapid method, by machine sieving, is given for routine tests.Outline of Investigation.Preliminary trial tests were made by the bureau and tentative methods were formulated for making the sieving tests both by band and by machine.Each of two samples of powdered coal was carefully mixed, and portions were sent to the twelve laboratories mentioned later. These were requested to make duplicate sieving tests on the two standard samples, by the hand-sieving and machine-sieving methods, and to follow the tentative procedure exactly as outlined. All of the laboratories made sieving tests by hand shaking and eight of them made tests by machine shaking."

INTRODUCTION For many years mining at the Stobie mine of the Inco Metals Co. consisted mainly of fill-type mining for higher grade ores and block caving or blasthole open stope mining for lower grade ores. Open stope mining, although quite favorable in the initial stoping phase, has always presented problems in the pillar recovery phase, especially at depth. In 1966, sublevel caving was introduced. This method is ideally suited for low-grade ore and can be applied very successfully to intermediate or higher grade ores providing proper controls are enforced. Sublevel caving has three distinct advantages: it is highly adaptable to mechanization; it recovers the ore in one operation; and it provides adequate ground sup¬port and safety regardless of mining depth. This method does, however, make extra demands, particularly for new types of supporting services. The constant presence of rock makes quality control of the grade of the ore being extracted essential. Increased de¬velopment, different types of ventilation, roadways, and maintenance are only a few of the many changes re¬quired. The care and maintenance of the fleets of diesel equipment and the modification of equipment is a con¬stant challenge. CHOICE OF SUBLEVEL CAVING The question arises, why mine by sublevel caving? Fig. 1 shows a typical problem encountered by the open stope or blasthole mining method. Near the surface there is little or no ground support problem. As mining progresses to an intermediate depth, however, ground failure starts to occur in the supporting pillars. If open mining is carried beyond this point, the critical depth is soon reached, accompanied by hanging wall caving, ex¬tensive pillar failure, and the danger of losing control of the mining cycle. The rock caved from the hanging wall mixes with and dilutes the ore being extracted from the blasthole stopes. Ore losses occur when pillar failure pre¬vents drilling and development of part of the ore. The interruption to the mining cycle causes serious curtail¬ment in production until ground failure is controlled and the mining method changed to adapt to the new conditions. Having recognized the limitations of open stope min¬ing, alternatives were sought. The first alternative (Fig. 2) was to fill the open stopes with sand fill be¬fore extensive pillar deterioration occurred, recover the pillar ore by fill mining, and then convert to total fill mining below. If the ore grade is high enough it can support the costly fill method. Recovery will be at a much slower rate and will therefore extend over a longer period of time. On the other hand, sublevel caving gives complete primary mining recovery in a short time and is very adaptable to mechanization, which is now a necessity to combat spiralling labor costs and give greater produc¬tivity per man. Sublevel caving is ideally suited as a mining method for low-grade ore bodies which eventually reach a criti¬cal depth for open stope mining. DEVELOPMENT The development phase comes first and of course its main purpose is to gain access to the ore and provide a route for ore removal from the mine. Initially a 20% inclined service ramp is driven in the footwall rock (Figs. 3, 4, and 5). It is preferable to start at the top of a mining block and drive the ramp down¬ grade so gravity can assist in mucking the blasted de¬velopment round, and also access can be gained more quickly to the initial production area. The ramp nor¬mally turns at 3.1 rad (180°) about every 152.4 m (500 ft) to keep it reasonably close to the rock disposal

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal , expressed in British thermal units , and the composition as shown by proximate analyses . To these , when required , are added the ash- softening temperature , the free- swelling index , and the Hardgrove grindability index . Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal , and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract . The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines ; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and , if it is not , a price adjustment is made . Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks ) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids . In addition , the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal . The Government purchased approximately 5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1963 . In connection with these purchases , the Bureau analyzed 6,999 samples . These are published ( table 1 ) for the use of Government officials and the public . A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States or , where production is small in any one State , by groups of adjacent States . Usando os testes de torção a quente isotérmico contínuo e relaxação de tensão determinou-se as curvas de escoamento plástico e de relaxação de tensão, juntamente com a evolução mecânica e microestrutural do aço inoxidável austenítico ISO 5832-9 segundo as condições de deformação expressa pelo parâmetro de Zener-Hollomon (Z). Equações constitutivas foram usadas para avaliar e prever o amaciamento dinâmico. Verificou-se que os níveis de tensões são elevados com alto valor de energia de ativação aparente e descolamento da deformação crítica e de pico para as condições de alto Z. A tensão crítica encontra-se muito próxima do pico de tensão produzindo um retardo no início da recristalização dinâmica. Além do pico vê-se que o estado estacionário de tensões é alcançado para grandes deformações evidenciando um atraso no amaciamento dinâmico. Este comportamento é consequência da moderada valor de energia de falha de empilhamento (EFE), átomos de soluto em solução sólida (Nb, N, Mo) e presença de partículas de precipitados da fase Z (NbCrN) reduzindo a mobilidade das discordâncias e contornos de grãos retardando a cinética de recristalização.

In composite washeries optimization of operating parameters to achieve maximum clean coal yield at the desired clean coal ash level is a major problem. This problem is more acute in countries like India, which have predominant reserves of difficult-to-wash coals. The constrained operational parameters of washing for some equipments make it more severe. In addition to this, the dependence of separating performance of different equipments upon various variables aggravates the situation. Here an attempt is made to find a numerical solution to get maximum yield and minimize the difference between the actual and the theoretical yield. The solution is arrived through constrained non-linear optimization of a multivariable objective function that utilizes spreadsheet tools; the method accommodates any number of source coals or washing size fractions. By using a designed Ep value the predicted yield of composite clean coal has been calculated and the yield is optimized subject to constraints on both the ash and specific gravity. It is shown that operational constraints of different washeries in the composite plant that utilizes gravity separation methods can also be over-come. The technique offers the coal preparation engineer an effective and straightforward method for determining the optimum cut-points of separation for different coals or blended coals to obtain maximum product yield at a specified level of ash content.

WARTIME factors have strengthened the production engineering consciousness of the petroleum industry. The basic principles of sound oil-production technology have been accepted as the standard by the industry and the governmental co-ordinating agencies. Every effort is being made to furnish larger quantities of petroleum with a minimum expenditure of materials and under strict conservation practices. The sphere of influence of production engineering extends from fundamental reservoir control of withdrawal rates and reservoir pressures to bolstering production from stripper wells. Serious transportation difficulties in moving oil to the East Coast have stimulated secondary recovery operations in the Appalachian and East Central oil-producing states. Diminishing discovery of new oil reserves by exploration activities increases the importance of promoting efficient oil-producing methods and practices throughout all productive areas in the United Nations.

Effective maintenance planning is vital for coal mining operations, where haul truck fleets directly determine production continuity. This study presents a discrete event simulation (DES) model for evaluating maintenance strategies under multiple failure modes and their interdependencies. The model integrates corrective, periodic preventive, and opportunistic maintenance, dynamically updating equipment lifetimes through probabilistic time-betweenfailure and time-to-repair distributions. Applied to a fivetruck coal haulage fleet over a one-year horizon, results show that periodic preventive maintenance delivers the highest availability (76%) under unconstrained conditions, slightly outperforming corrective-only maintenance (75%). Opportunistic and integrated approaches performed worse (68% and 69%), reflecting redundancy from overlapping interventions. These findings suggest that structured preventive programs provide the most reliable outcomes when costs and resources are not limiting. The DES framework serves as a baseline for future models incorporating cost, spare parts logistics, and workforce availability, supporting robust maintenance planning in coal mining operations.

As a result of a field examination made during the Bureau of Mines intensive manganese program, three lots of ore were procured from the famous old Paymaster District, 7 miles from Midway Wells, Imperial County, Calif. This district is an old producer and shipped approximately 10,000 tons of 45-percent manganese ore during World War I. A 2-ton lot of ore was taken of a Bureau engineer from the exposure of a small fissure vein in conglomerate on the Turtle Group of claims; 1 mile east of the Pacific Coast Manganese Corp. claims. The vein material consisted of manganese oxides, calcite, and quartz in fairly coarse association.
