El proyecto denominado "Programa de Adecuación" fue implementado durante cuatro años y tiene como finalidad mostrar la estrategia, la innovación de prácticas ambientales y los beneficios obtenidos durante dicho programa como la reducción del consumo de agua fresca procedente de una fuente natural autorizada, así como la recuperación de residuos sólidos para su posterior reuso o reciclaje.

The U. S Bureau of Mines is conducting research to develop improved guidelines for selecting the type and pattern of roof support in different geologic environments (Mucho, et al., 1995). As a part of this wider research effort, a multifaceted ground control investigation was conducted at the Diamond TB Mine of RoxCoal, Inc. The study included statistical analysis of mine-wide roof bolt performance, instrumented bolt test areas, stress damage mapping, and pillar design analysis. The mine employs state-of-the-art continuous miner technology, including mobile roof supports and continuous haulage, to retreat mine the Lower Kittanning Coalbed. A herringbone section design makes the stability of the center belt entry critical to efficient retreat mining. Roof cutters formed during section development sometimes set up unstable immediate roof conditions in advance of the belt entry mobile roof supports during retreat mining.

Montana sapphires were first discovered in alluvial deposits in the Helena area in 1865 and subsequently were discovered in other alluvial deposits in southwestern Montana and also in a lamprophyre dike at Yogo in central Montana. From about 1900 until the late 1930?s, when synthetic sapphire began to come into widespread industrial use, Montana sapphire mines produced large quantities mainly for watch bearings with lesser production for the gemstone market. The Yogo deposit is now mined for the gemstone market and two of the alluvial deposits are mined to produce sapphires for the fee-sieving of sapphire-bearing gravel and for the direct sale of gemstones. The generally pale-colored sapphires from the alluvial deposits in southwestern Montana are heated to enhance their colors whereas the generally blue sapphires from the Yogo deposit require no treatment. Markets for sapphires from both the alluvial deposits and the Yogo deposit are strong. In spite of reported historic production in excess of 70 tonnes, mineable resources appear to remain at most major deposits. Also abundant untested lamprophyre dikes in central Montana may host sapphires similar to those at the Yogo deposit.

"No. 9 Walton is a new high-rise condominium building located in the Gold Coast area of Chicago. The adjacent building, Walton on the Park, featured 4 levels of below grade parking and utilized a secant pile wall with integral drilled shafts to support the exterior columns. The earth retention system (ERS) for No. 9 Walton also employed a secant pile wall in combination with drilled shafts. The excavation into the soft Chicago clays varied in depth from 9.75 m to 12.5 m (32 feet to 41 feet) below grade. The temporary excavation support used internal braces from the new secant piles to the existing foundation system of Walton on the Park to provide earth retention. Engineering teams for both projects worked together to design the bracing scheme and connections to ensure that the new excavation and internal bracing would not overstress any elements of the existing structure. Further complicating the project, immediately to the west of the project was a historic church founded on shallow spread footings which required underpinning to minimize movements.The project involved three different building owners, small values for acceptable wall movement, an extensive monitoring program and the challenges of merging two earth retention systems. The subsurface conditions at the site, the adjacent structures, the excavation, and the performance are described. A summary of the design methods and the expected movements of the ERS are discussed, and the performance monitoring system is described. Overall, the ERS performed better than expected with less than 1 inch of measured lateral wall movement during and after the excavation was completed. Measured performance of the ERS is compared to the predicted performance and to the performance requirements for the project.INTRODUCTIONNo. 9 Walton is a new high-rise condominium building in Chicago located in the Gold Coast. Developers originally slated the project to be Phase 2 of the Walton on the Park development built in the mid 2000’s, using portions of the existing foundation system for development of the new structure. However, the housing market crash in 2007 prompted cancellation of Phase 2 of the Walton on the Park development. The property sat undeveloped until 2015 when design and construction for No. 9 Walton began under a new development and design team. The project team completed foundation excavation and below grade structures in 2016 with the first units of the building turned over to new homeowners in 2017.The structural design for No. 9 Walton consisted of reinforced concrete columns and slabs, supported laterally by a heavily reinforced concrete central core. Drilled shafts to rock supported the interior columns and core with the exterior columns and foundations integrally included in the earth retention system. The structure had a below-grade footprint of approximately 1,490 m2 (16,000 ft2). The general excavation extended 9.75 m to 12.5 m (32 feet to 41 feet) below street level with the deepest portions at the central building core mat foundation."

This study introduces a new apparatus designed to improve the load-bearing capacities and insertion efficiency of split set type friction bolts. Laboratory and site studies demonstrated the apparatus’s advantages in terms of practicality and prevention of buckling. The apparatus temporarily compresses the split tubes, reducing friction during insertion and increasing normal stresses and friction capacity at the bolt-rock contacts.

Experience with the current version of gallery test 4, in use since 1913 to evaluate the incendivity of permissible explosives in the presence of coal dust, has shown the procedure to have inadequate discrimination. Consequently the Bureau of Mines used the up-and-down method of statistical design to investigate the incendivity of permissible explosives in the presence of coal dust and gas. A suitable device was developed to measure coal dust concentrations in the air-gas mixtures and to disperse the dust in the gallery atmosphere. A proposed testing method which uses suspended shots in a predispersed coal dust-gas-air mixture was evaluated. The new method can discriminate between different explosives with respect to their incendivity. Maximum ignitibility of the coal dust cloud by permissible explosives occurred in the vicinity of 0.3 oz/cu ft. About 10% sodium chloride in permissible explosive formulations had a very significant effect in reducing the probability of igniting coal dust. Bundled charges were more incendive than column charges.

The feasibility of using small-scale models to simulate residential masonry foundation walls subject to fatigue loading was investigated. Five wall segments were modeled in one-quarter scale using dynamic similitude equations. The walls were dynamically loaded using a sinusoidal base motion and wall accelerations were monitored. The stiffness, natural frequency response, and damping characteristics were measured. The number of cycles of testing necessary to cause initial visible cracking was recorded. Analysis of the data indicated the importance of the relationship between the forcing function and the natural frequencies of the structure in influencing cracking damage.

The research affiliate projects of the Continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center concentrate on the development of technologies and methodologies for the exploration 4 and assessment of nonfuel continental shelf mineral resources within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone. Three of the FY 1990-91 research grants are summarized below. Scientists at the Center for Applied Isotope Studies at the University of Georgia have developed ?An Advanced Design for a Seafloor Gamma Isotope Mapping System? for the rapid collection of data on seafloor sediments. This system is designed to detect gamma radiation emitted by naturally occurring radioactive elements found in marine sediments. This data can be used to study seafloor lithology and has direct application in marine mineral surveys. The purpose of this study has been to redesign and calibrate the system for marine mineral survey work. Recent modifications of the sled design, gamma radiation detector, and supporting software have resulted in considerable improvements in sensitivity, functional operation, and data acquisition.

Discussion by A.C. Fitzgerald of the paper, published in Trans. IMM A, vol.104, 1995, p.B121-B135, is presented together with the authors' response. Fitzgerald points out a number of problems with the idea of mineralising fluids leaving no trace in the large volumes of rock traversed before depositing all minerals of value in a particular horizon or rock type with which the required isobaric or isothermic surface also coincides. He suggested that in the case of the Rooiberg tin deposits, the Lebowa Granites may be batholiths that reached the surface and were capped by sheets of their own volcanics. The authors agree that they had considered a possible syngenetic origin for the stratabound deposits, explain that no conclusive evidence for this could be found, discuss the relative ages of the sediments and volcanics of the Rooiberg Fragment and explain the role of its low-intensity deformation and flat dip in the coincidence of an isobaric-isothermic surface with the lithological stratification

This paper describes laboratory techniques and subsequent results of Bureau of Mines research to produce chlorination-grade feedstock from an abundant, low-grade, domestic, rock ilmenite ore. The research is part of the Bureau-effort to devise technology that may help decrease U.S. dependence on imported raw materials. A rock ilmenite containing about 46 wt pct Ti02 was smelted in an electric arc furnace with coke, woodchips, and Na2C03 to separate most of the iron as pig iron and to form a low-iron, titanium-enriched slag. The slag was ground, pelletized, oxidized, and then sulfated with mixtures of SO2 and air in a continuous 4.5- to 9.1- kg/h apparatus at 1023 to 1223 K. The sulfated slag, containing 60 to 65 pct TiO2, was reground and leached in water at ambient temperature to decrease the combined levels of the troublesome Ca, Mg, and Mn impurities from 7.0 to 1.7 wt pct. At levels of more than 3 wt pct, these impurities contribute to operating and disposal problems, The final product was upgraded to about 84 wt pct TiO2. This material potentially is suitable for chlorination in a fluidized-bed reactor. The most favorable results were achieved with leached slag sulfated at a feedrate of 4.5 kg/h and at temperatures of 1073 to 1123 K.

O aço inoxidável austenítico 316 (316 SS) é um dos materiais metálicos mais utilizados em aplicações médicas devido à combinação de propriedades mecânicas e do baixo custo. No entanto, desgaste e corrosão estimulam mudanças permanentes no tecido humano que podem levar à perda do implante. O desenvolvimento de recobrimentos biocompatíveis e estáveis, que apresentem propriedades mecânicas adequadas, e que não sofram ruptura ou delaminação durante o uso, é uma solução muito promissora para melhorar o desempenho do 316 SS como biomaterial para implantes. Neste trabalho, uma liga intermetálica FeAlCr, que tem apresentado propriedades adequadas para a aplicação como biomaterial, foi utilizada como recobrimento sobre um aço inoxidável 316 de grau médico. O revestimento foi obtido utilizando-se a técnica magnetron sputtering por corrente contínua. Os parâmetros de deposição, como distância substrato - alvo e pressão de gás argônio foram mantidos fixos em 50 mm e 5 mTorr, respectivamente. As amostras foram preparadas com os seguintes valores de potência de sputtering: 50 W, 75W, 100 W e 150 W. A adesão dos filmes foi analisada por teste de scratch, enquanto a espessura e a taxa de deposição foram analisadas por perfilometria ótica. As características estruturais foram analisadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura com EDS.

The emerging importance of pneumatic conveying systems for bulk materials is becoming recognized by more persons responsible for materials management as consultants, at the corporate level and at the plant level. They have learned that the economic advantages of a pneumatic system are frequently decisive when compared to alternate methods. Included in these advantages are relative simplicity, ease of installation, flexibility, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, safety and ease of automation to the degree desired. In general, installed costs favor a pneumatic system when compared to competing mechanical systems if the transporting distances are long or to and from many points. In addition, supplemental use such as cooling, heating, or drying may supply the incremental value required to justify its selection. (1). The main disadvantages of a pneumatic system is the greater horsepower required per unit weight of material conveyed and material limits in abrasiveness and density. In addition, there is a tendency to increase material breakage at changes of direction and at any obstruction such as the imperfect butting of one, piece of pipe to another in the conveying line. Classification of the material at the discharge may also cause problems in dusting and segregation. Materials weighing less than 4 pounds per cubic foot tend to cause feeding and collecting problems although they can be conveyed easily. Material between 4 and 20 pounds per cubic foot can be handled with less problems but flow rate is hard to predict. The 20 to 60 pounds per cubic foot range offers best results; whereas, over 60 pounds per cubic foot, materials tend to drop out of the air stream and settle in the pipe line unless careful provisions are made to prevent it. The Bureau of Mines used an electrolytic tank model to investigate the response of guard electrodes of different dimensions under different simulated reservoir conditions. Sandstone disks from the Berea and Connellsville Formations were used as resistive beds in the model, and agar gel or water was used as conductive beds. In the experiments, bed thickness, hole diameter, mud resistivity, and bed resistivity were varied. The guard electrode is an excellent tool for determining true bed resistivity in the thin-bedded oil reservoirs of the Appalachian area. Vertical resolution and resistivity values are good when there is little or no invasion. Resistivity values are near true bed resistivity in beds thicker than about six hole diameters when the electrode-to-hole-diameter ratio is close to 1. However, low-resistivity muds cause false peaks to appear on the logs near bed boundaries in thick beds, and for resistive beds having a thickness approximately three to five times the hole diameter, apparent resistivities tend to be excessively high when mud resistivity is low.

FOR many years past it has been the practice at the Bairnsdale School of Mines to treat any parcels of auriferous concentrates sent in from the surrounding district by roasting them in a handworked reverberatory, and then chlorinating or cyaniding the product. According to Donald CIark, who has done a large amount of work on these ores, the results obtained were fairly satisfactory extractions of over 90 per cent being claimed. With some modifications, the method has been very generally adopted, not only in Gippsland but throughout Victoria. It is, however, difficult to get exact information as to the extractions actually obtained, and unfortunately no records of working results have been kept at the Bairnsdale School of Mines.Having treated several lots of ore by this method during 1907 and 1908 with unsatisfactory results, the writers thought it desirable to make a detailed investigation on some particular ore, both in the laboratory and on a working scale. The ore selectedwas a parcel of low-grade concentrates from Stirling, a small mining field situated about forty miles to the east of Bairnsdale. This ore was chosen chiefly on account of the heavy and inexplicable volatilization loss which took place even on roasting with the greatest care; the loss amounting to between 10 and 15 per cent. "One of the most important wartime activities of the Bureau of Mines was the search for new sources of mineral necessary to the prosecution of the war. Part of that effort was in the form of metallurgical service extended to other government agencies engaged in purchasing and stock piling some of the more critical and strategic materials.Fluorite was one of the materials stock piled by the Metals Reserve Company. The fluorite was usually in the form of coarse metallurgical con¬centrate purchased in the United States and abroad. The material was stock¬piled to insure an adequate reserve of fluorite for the metallurgical industries. The domestic production of metallurgical fluorite containing a minimum effective calcium fluoride content of 55 percent,4/ however, gradually increased until production was at least equal to consumption. The stock-piled metallurgical fluorite, therefore, soon became a surplus commodity.On the other hand, the supply of acid-grade fluorite, containing a minimum of 97.5 percent calcium fluoride and n maximum of 1.5 percent silica,5/ was never entirely adequate. Increased consumption of acid-grade material in the aluminum, petroleum, and chemical industries kept that material on the critical list during the war.Under the circumstances, it was felt that a study of the possibility of producing acid-grade fluorite from the metallurgical stock piles would be of some benefit to the war effort. Consequently, samples of fluorite from several of the Metals Reserve Company stock piles were tested by the Bureau of Mines at the request of the War Production Board.Two groups of samples were submitted for testing. One consisted of metallurgical fluorite purchased from Mexico and stock-piled in the El Paso and Laredo, Texas, stock piles of the Metals Reserve Company. The second group of samples was from the stock piles at Gila, N. Mex.The sample submitted from the El Paso stock pile consisted of about 5,000 pounds of minus 4-inch material. Mineralogically, the sample consisted of fluorite contaminated by calcite, chert, quartz, and small amounts of iron and alumina. Although some of the fluorite was reasonably free from gangue at minus 1-inch, much of it remained locked in sizes as fine as 65-mesh.The Laredo sample was about 5,000 pounds of material from five different piles. The samples from each stock pile, A to E, inclusive, were analyzed separately to determine whether the grade of the material in the piles varied markedly. As there was little difference in the analyses, the samples were combined in proportion to the tonnage represented to make a composite sample for testing. The composite sample consisted of fluorite with small amounts of quartz, calcite, and barite. Most of the fluorite was the dark-colored, opaque variety. A small amount of iron-oxide staining was present, and traces of muscovite, clay, pyrite, and tourmaline were noted. The quartz was present as crystals in vugs, and as finely disseminated grains in the fluorite. The druzy quartz and the calcite were free at minus 10-mesh, but the disseminated grains, some of which were 1 to 15 microns in size, were not entirely free at minus 270-mesh. A petrographic estimate indicated that 65 percent of the silica was locked in the 150- to 200-mesh."

WROUGHT-IRON eye-bars for bridges and roofs, designed upon what is known as the pin connection system, have been successfully manufactured in this country for some years. The most approved methods employed have been the hydraulic upsetting process, and by die-forging under a hammer. In upset eyes the fibre of the iron is necessarily much distorted ; and in bars of considerable size, this disturbance seriously impairs the strength of the connection. Mr. Collingwood, in discussing my paper on "Proportions of the Heads of Eye-bars," read before the American Society of Civil Engineers, Jan. 21st, 1874, submitted sketches of certain bars intended for the anchorage of the East River bridge, which had been exposed to the action of sulphuric acid a sufficient length of time to thoroughly cleanse the surfaces, and expose the condition of the fibre. These sketches are here reproduced for the purpose of illustrating the effect of this methpd of manufacture. In Figs. 1, 2, and 3, it will be observed that the fibres at A, and E, have been folded back upon themselves and otherwise twisted and disturbed, in a manner not calculated to inspire confidence in the integrity of the connection. To compensate for this defect, a large excess of metal is thrown into the eye; but a method of manufacture which involves such a necessity, even although it be the one giving the best results thus far, all things being considered, is far from being perfect.

PURSUANT to a recommendation made by the Section delegates at their conference at the Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. last February, the Directors, at their meeting on March 15, 1944, appointed a committee charged with the duty of investigating the present status of licensing and registration of engineers, and to make a report on the whole subject for the information of the mining fraternity. The committee consisted of E. W. Ellis, chairman, H. D. Keiser, Henry T. Mudd, J. J. Croston, and Simon Strauss. Messrs. Keiser and Strauss were unable to assist in the work of the committee, and Mr. Mudd was forced to resign in July, his place being taken by A. F. Greaves-Walker. Able assistance was given the committee by T. Keith Legare, executive secretary of the National Council of State Boards of Engineering Examiners, and by Ed. ward Larson, executive secretary of the National Society of Professional Engineers. The accompanying somewhat condensed version of the report of Mr. Ellis's committee, dated Oct. 15, 1944, is confined to facts rather than to recommendations. The "Model Law" to which reference is made was first drafted by repre¬sentatives of six national engineering societies in 1911. It has since been amended many times, the latest version dated June 1943 is recommended to the State Licensing Boards as a pattern for formulating or amending state laws. A copy of the "Model Law" in pamphlet form will be sent to any member on request from A.I.M.E. headquarters while the supply lasts. The report:
