In recent years considerable interest has been shown in surface-alloyed metals, particnlarly those of chromium (chromized steels), which have excellent corrosion resistance under a variety of severe conditions, and may undergo bending and flanging operations without spalling. An early method1 employed to produce a high-chromium case on steel was developed by Kelley in 1921. It consisted of heating a low-carbon steel in intimate contact with powdered chromium in the presence of hydrogen at temperatures sufficiently high to permit diffusion of chromium into the steel. The usefulness of this process was limited because the extremely high tem- peratures of 1200º to 1400ºC. (2200° to 2550°F.) caused excessive grain growth and warpage. Louenstein and Ulmer2 packed iron castings in ferrochromium and com- mon salt, and heated for approximately three hours at 930º to 1040°C. (1700º to 1900ºF.). A recent and more practical method of depositing chromium on steel surfaces has been developed in Germany by Daeves, Becker and Steinberg3-8 and in Russia by Izgaryshev and Sarkisov.9 This process consists of passing gaseous chromium chloride over the steel to be chromized at temperatures of 900º to 1000ºC., or packing them in a porous, ceramic material that previously had been saturated with chromium chloride. The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of tests to compare the cutting forces required by radial and point-attack bits when making similar cuts. Three radial and four point-attack bits were tested in two coal mines using the Bureau's in-seam tester to measure coal-cutting forces in situ. Tests were also conducted to investigate the effects of weathering and cleating. The test results show that in each case, at a specific clearance angle, the radial bits required less tangential and much less normal force than the point-attack bits. The resultant of the cutting forces for some types of cut was 50 pct less at mine 1 for radial cuts compared to cuts with the best point-attack bit, and 40 pct less at mine 2. There was some difference between three types of radial bits, but it was not as significant as the difference between each type of point-attack bit. Cutting coal perpendicular to the cleat planes required less cutting and normal force than the same type of cuts parallel to the cleat planes. Test results showed no effect due to weathering on cutting force data. Cutting parallel increased forces only because cuts were made in the rock band.

"Laboratory batch flotation tests were carried out on fine (-20 µm) hematite to investigate the non-polar oil’s influences when sodium oleate, octyl hydroxamic acid, or oleyl hydroxamic acid were used as a collector. Batch flotation tests were performed with artificial mixed minerals (hematite:quartz = 1:1) under natural pH condition and kerosene was utilized as the model oil. The experimental results showed that kerosene emulsion behaved differently when used in conjunction with the three collectors. Kerosene helped improve the flotation when sodium oleate or oleyl hydroxamic acid was used as a collector. Nevertheless, it reduced concentrate weight yield, grade and recovery to a noticeable extent when octyl hydroxamic acid was used as a collector, especially at low dosages. In addition, single hematite batch flotation kinetics tests coupled with water recovery measurement were carried out to study the role of kerosene at different collector dosages. It was observed that water drainage and the resulting froth destabilization by kerosene was dominant at low collector dosages, especially in the flotation using octyl hydroxamic acid. At higher collector dosages, the water drainage and froth destabilization effect by kerosene was possibly counter-balanced by the higher hematite hydrophobicity and bubble surface tension gradient, which led to more stable froth layer.INTRODUCTION The minerals industry is facing a steady decline in ore grade, compounded by increasing complexity of mineral dissemination. As a result, the ore has to be ground sufficiently fine to have a suitable degree of mineral liberation, which produces large percentages of fine and ultrafine particles outside of optimal size range for ore dressing. Due to the unique characteristics of fine particles, i.e., small mass, high specific surface area, and problems such as increased solubility of complex minerals (Finkelstein, 1997; Finkelstein & Allison, 1976; Fornasiero & Ralston, 2005), high reagent consumption, fast surface oxidation in the case of sulfides (Collins & Read, 1971; Klassen & Mokrousov, 1963), severe particle entrainment (Subrahmanyam & Forssberg, 1988; Warren, 1984), low flotation rates (Glembotsky, 1953; Philippoff, 1952; Ye & Miller, 1988), slime coating (T. K. Mitchell et al., 2005; Parsonage, 1984), etc., flotation performance of these finely ground ores is very poor in terms of low concentrate grade and recovery."

Autoignition temperatures and limits of flammability of nine halogenated hydrocarbons in atmospheres of air, oxygen, and nitrogen tetroxide were measured in a modified standard autoignition apparatus and limit-of-flammability apparatus previously developed at the Bureau of Nines. Of the nine halogenated hydrocarbons investigates--bromochloromethane, bromotrifluoromethane, bromochlorodifluoromethane, 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane, 1-bromo-l-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane, dibromodifluoromethane, l,2-dibromo-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-ethane, 1,1,1,3,3-pentachlorotrifluoropropane, and l-bromo-2,4-dichloro-1,1,2, 3,3,4-hexafluorobutane--two formed flammable mixtures with nitrogen tetroxide and six with oxygen; none formed flammable mixtures with air. Three of the halogenated hydrocarbons formed no flammable zones with any of the three oxidizing atmospheres. For those halogenated hydrocarbons that supported combustion in oxygen atmospheres, explosion pressures developed during constant-volume burning of mixtures near the middle of the flammable zone were observed to range from about 6 psig for dibromodifluoromethane to 158 psig for 1-bromo-1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane. In all cases, the calculated burning velocities of these mixtures were less than 8 in/sec.

Technological innovations and emerging analytical capabilities are transforming the way drill samples are analysed, with real-time mineralogical analysis made possible. In addition, new business/technical requirements are challenging long standing processes to incorporate more sources of information during planning in order to improve compliance to plan during mining and processing. Unfortunately, the new sources of information that are added do not always have adequate protocols in place to ensure quality data is collected.Spectral data covering the visible – near – short wave – midwave – longwave range are routinely collected by the Geoscience and Exploration department at BHP Billiton Iron Ore for accurate mineralogical identification. These data are used for geological interpretations (logging and modelling) and prediction of physical variables (metallurgical and geotechnical properties).This paper introduces how sampling and quality assurance / quality control concepts have been applied in the spectral data process. The effect of the condition of friction upon the ultimate unit compressive strength as determined between the compressed faces of precisely machined coal specimens and specially prepared testing platens has been examined. Reductions of 30 to 40% in the ultimate unit compressive strength of these model coal pillars have been verified when lubricants areused between the faces as compared to non-lubricated faces. Increase in unit compressive strength due to confinement at each of three levels of friction appears to follow generally the widely accepted "1/2 power law", i.e. S - C (L/T)1/2 where S is the unit ultimate strength, C is a constant dependent on the coal being tested and the coefficient of friction acting at the compression surfaces and L and T are the least width and thickness of the specimen, respectively. Results suggest that the surface condition of both the specimen and platens should be mentioned in detail in conjunction with compression testing, for although the term (L/T)1/2 is adequate for all practical purposes, the coefficient C is directly dependent on the condition of interfacial friction, all else remaining constant. One phase of the investigation of the confining effect of friction on the ultimate unit compressive strength of small coal specimens has recently been completed at the School of Mines of West Virginia University. The efficient control of ground is of fundamental importance to successful mining operations and the design of support pillars has always presented the mining engineer with a difficult and intriguing engineering problem. Since about the turn of the century, many investigators have performed extensive laboratory tests on small coal specimens in efforts to solve some of the perplexing problems of strata control and pillar action in coal mines. A detailed review of this work would serve no purpose here, but a brief mention of the more significant contributions is in order. Muller16 was perhaps the first to illustrate the effect of confining pressure on the strength of coal specimens in compression. His work has recently been more carefully expanded by the experiments of Murrell17 in Great Britain. Rice and Enzian l9 observed that as the size of cubical test specimens increased, the unit compressive strength decreased. These observations were later supplemented by Lawall and Holland, 13 by Greenwald4,5 et a1 at the U. S. Bureau of Mines, by Gaddy3 as well as by Steart,22 Millard15 et a1 and Evans2 et al. Gaddy3 seems to have been first to quantify this relationship with his equation: S = K/vd , where S - ultimate unit compressive strength (psi), K = a constant dependent on the coal, and D =edge dimension (in inches). Holland7 concluded that the strength of coal as affected by lateral dimensions and thickness could be expressed as where K = a coefficient dependent upon the coal, L = least width of pillar (in.) and T = thickness of pillar (in.). Data supplied by this formula have been compared to the estimated stresses in pillars that had been standing for long periods in coal mines and in the cases so far studied the results indicate that the formula predictions are sufficiently accurate for engineering purposes (Holland11 ). This equation therefore is believed to be the simplest and most accurate tool available at the present time for approximating the strength of a coal pillar (over a specified range of L/T) in situ. The advent of the more efficient and effective rare-earth roll (RER) separator in the early 1980?s began a new era of dry magnetic separation. The RER units quickly became the separator of choice within the materials processing industry. Though RER separators are now commonplace throughout the world, only modest advancements have been made to the original design. This paper details recent, more significant, rare-earth magnetic separation developments. These developments maintain the best features of existing technology while minimizing shortcomings. The discussion includes discerning features that aid in better metallurgical performance. Also discussed are improved mechanical aspects that allow for both easier operation and maintenance. Performance details from various test programs are included.

"In June 2014, Orange County Flood Control District (OCFCD) completed construction improvements of the East Garden Grove-Wintersburg Channel for a price of $42 million. Instead of the pre-existing traditional trapezoidal levee, the channel was improved with a vertical compact levee. Dubbed Soil-Mix-Sandwich (SMS), this geo-structural and environmental solution for coastal channel improvements, underlain by liquefiable soil strata, was both a design and construction innovation. It employed Deep Soil Cement Mixing (DSCM) within the confines of a hydraulically-pressed (Giken Method) sheet pile duo. SMS was unique because it incorporated both subterranean and supra-dredge-line soil mixing within a very narrow workspace. Its DSCM pattern aimed at optimum densification of the workspace and was confirmed during the construction process. It availed the DSCM sub-contractor (Hayward Baker Inc.) the opportunity to demonstrate the fitness of their huge wet-mixing machinery within a very confined access-area and introduced approximately 70,000 cubic yards of DSCM within a limited 15 foot workspace width that stretched for a mile. The sheet pile duo created a construction-enclosure that became a stay-in-place load resisting system. PROJECT CHRONOLOGY AND LOCATIONAn Orange County Flood Control District (OCFCD) project-report was commissioned to study the East Garden Grove Wintersburg channel (OCFCD facility # C05). The report examined the hydraulic conveyance of the C05 channel and was concluded in 1994 by Williamson & Schmidt. The project-report did not encompass extensive geologic studies; but it provided several alternatives for channel improvement. It recommended a single row of sheet piles as the preferred alternative for the downstream reach.The most downstream reach of the C05 channel is located in an environmentally sensitive area, in City of Huntington Beach, California, USA. Its site includes seismic chasms that surface within the C05-footprint (the Newport- Inglewood tectonic fault). Extensive deposits of liquefiable soil exist beneath the channel. Furthermore, tidal-influence prevails against the channel levee. Implementation of a successful design for channel improvement emerged after several traditional concepts were deemed unacceptable by geotechnical consultants. OC Public Works (on behalf of OCFCD) was in need of a design and construction technique that mitigated many associated risks. From these circumstances, Soil-Mix-Sandwich was born and was referred to in the rest of this discussion as SMS. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology is growing to be a common comminution tool in iron ore processing. The technology finds a wide acceptance and presents specific benefits in coarse ore grinding and closed-circuit grinding in preparation of ball mill feed, right down to the other end of the particle size spectrum for iron ore pellet feed preparation.A growing number of minerals processing plants are facing higher operating costs and difficulties due to a scarcity of process water, which in some cases is a result of more stringent environmental constraints. In addition, many new iron ore deposits are located in more arid regions of the world. These challenges have led to operators taking a new look at dry processing of iron ores.The use of dry crushing and classification technology in cement production from blast furnace slag, clinker material or limestone feed stocks indicates that the technology may be applied in minerals processing. In addition, dry processing provides the possibility of generating a final product from finely disseminated and inter-grown ores at sizes near or well below 100 µm, as may be required for beneficiation techniques such as in fine magnetic separation, flotation or magnetic flocculation.Dry grinding by HPGR has a number of specific features, challenges and opportunities, including balancing power input, moisture content requirements and classification efficiency in the process design. HPGR parameters and the latest HPGR design and sizing capabilities indicate considerable potential benefits from this dry processing technology.This paper highlights some of the specific issues that play a role in dry HPGR application, with respect to energy and materials balances. Although the markets for coal in the United States have changed rapidly over the last three decades, the uses of coal, namely, to produce heat and power or coke have been left almost unchanged. The coke is used either as a chemical reducing agent alone or as a reducing agent and source of heat. Most of the heat and power markets for coal require no coal processing, although for more than 50 years, many proposals to skim the more valuable substances in coal before burning have been advanced. Thus, the only large tonnage market requiring processing of coal is high-temperature carbonization to make coke. At present, coal requires processing for some small markets, but for future potential large markets, such as gasification, conversion to liquid and gaseous fuels, and conversion to chemicals, coals will require more processing than is now being done.

The U. S. Geological Survey, I believe, has almost completed a study of the Harney Peak quadrangle, preliminary to the publication of a report on that district. As I was engaged for some months on an investigation of the mode of occurrence of the ore-bearing formation in this area, it has seemed to me timely to make public the results of my study, as a contribution to the consideration of this subject. It seems scarcely necessary to describe the locality and general geology of the Black hills of South Dakota, for since 1846 many have contributed information concerning this region, some of the reports bearing such well-known names as those of Walter P. Jenney, Henry Newton, S. F. Emmons, and C. R. Van Hise, while me have only to glance at Bulletin No. 4 of the South Dakota School of Mines, in which Prof. C. C. O'Harra, of that institution, has given us a bibliography of contributions to the geography and geology of the section, to find that other well-known men have studied the district, and have given us the benefit of their researches. The U. S. Geological Survey has made geological maps of nearly the whole of the Black hills, the only quadrangle yet to be conlpleted being, as stated, the Harney Peak district. During the late summer and autumn of 1910, it was my lot to examine and report on a considerable area in this neighborhood, which once had been prospected, and in some cases exploited, for tin. This paper gives an account of certain geological phenomena, noted at that time, which greatly influenced my conclusions. ACCORDING to the records, Phelps Dodge made its original entry into the production of copper in the oldest copper mines of Arizona at Morenci in 1881. The ore body now being mined as the Morenci open-pit, as outlined by churn-drill holes, diamond-drill holes, and underground workings, is estimated to yield 230,000,000 tons of ore averaging 1.06 per cent copper. This development will add 2,500,000 tons of copper to the 900,000 tons already produced in the district. Some five years ago preliminary development of the ore body began, with big-scale production planned including the erection of a new treatment plant to be built near the mine. Inasmuch as the Morenci open-pit was an entirely new project this required the grading of roads, establishment of mining benches, construction of railroad grades, building of railroad tracks, erection of shops, as well as the purchase of the necessary equipment to satisfactorily and economically maintain the schedules of production forecast. Along with the preparation of the main ore body it was also desirable to mine and deliver to an experimental mill a relatively small daily tonnage of typical ore.

O cobre é um dos metais mais utilizados desde os primórdios da indústria, principalmente para a fabricação de fios e cabos para fins elétricos. Dentre as diversas propriedades do cobre, as mais importantes são: capacidade que o material tem de conduzir corrente elétrica e quantidade de energia utilizada para realizar o recozimento garantindo o alongamento especificado. Essas propriedades são diretamente influenciadas pelo teor de oxigênio adicionado como elemento de liga durante a fabricação do vergalhão de cobre eletrolítico. Neste contexto, o artigo tem o objetivo de apresentar como realizar o controle do oxigênio no processo de laminação e quais as influências desse elemento para diminuir os custos com energia elétrica, reduzir as quebras no processo de trefilação e aumentar a condutividade elétrica dos produtos de cobre.

"In this paper, vacuum distillation technology has been employed to study the possibility and regularity of separating copper and enriching lead, silver and other valuable metals from copper- based multi component alloys. The result of experiment indicated the practicability of vacuum distillation dealing with copper base complex multi-component alloy to separating lead and silver, when the vacuum distillation temperature was 1637K, distillation time was 60min; residual gas pressure was 20-30Pa, the removal rate of silver was 95.86%, of lead was 99.63%; the evaporation rate of copper was 0.745%. The removal rate of arsenic, antimony and tin respectively were 83.09%, 48.12% and 24.54%. Vacuum distillation method is applicable for dealing with the copper-based multi component alloys, silver and lead can realize effective recovery.IntroductionCopper generally go with lead mineral, therefore, to remove copper from lead becomes an inevitable link in lead smelting. Dross from removed copper usually contains lead, arsenic, antimony, tin and noble metal silver. In abroad, soda ash-iron dust is adopted to process copper dross of this kind. The outcomes of this process are lead matte, wet lead, scoria smoke dust etc[1~5] The dominant components of all the outcomes are copper and lead. Moreover, in the process of tin smelting, copper contained by-products are produced, such as, crude tin alloy, tin lead electrolytic anode slime and so on. Copper content of all the products are ranging from few percentages to several tens percentage. Those products, no matter merge into main producing process, or separate treatment cost losses of valuable metal. For one hand, the containing of copper of outcomes from pyrogenic attack is less than 50%, for the other hand, a lot of valuable metal need to be processed, which increase the cost of retrieve."

Based on previous Bureau of Mines research indicating that improved high-temperature properties could be achieved for periclase refractories through chemical additions, the Bureau investigated the properties of full-size bricks produced from chemically modified periclase refractory grains and the suitability of making such chemical additions to Mg(OH)2 slurries prior to production of the periclase grains. In full-size brick testing, strength values, both hot and cold, for the optimized bricks were superior to those for a commercial 98-wt-pct-MgO refractory. The best results were obtained for a natural magnesite with an adjusted CaO:Si02 (C:S) ratio of 3.0 and a 1.0-wt-pct addition of Zr02 and for a seawater periclase with an adjusted C:S ratio of 2.5 and a 0.5-wt-pct addition of Mn02. For samples produced from chemically modified Mg(OH)2 slurries, additions of both Mn02 and Zr02 and an increase in C:S ratios produced significant increases in hot flexural strength, similar to those resulting from chemical additions made to periclase grains. The most effective modifications were additions of Mn02 to brine-derived periclases having a C:S ratio adjusted to 3.0. These results on chemically modified magnesia refractories indicate that such material could potentially substitute for magnesiachrome refractories containing imported chromite.

The changes in the elemental contents and the structural properties of chalcopyrite concentrate when roasted were studied, and the main reactions contributing to the leaching process revisited. Firstly, TG/DTA measurements were performed to identify the roasting temperatures that influenced the type of species reacting with sulphuric acid leaching liquor. The temperatures of main reactions, whose output may affect the subsequent leaching process, were analysed for the concentrate at hand, and concluded to be generally lower than those reported in literature. Secondly, the obtained results were confirmed by images and XRD measurements on the roasted concentrate at temperatures in between 350 and 600 °C with increments of 50 °C. Finally, the leaching behaviour of the roasted specimens in a stirred sulphuric acid solution examined and the Cu/ Fe selectivity investigated that the maximum Cu/Fe ratio in the pregnant solution would nearly be achieved for the roasting temperatures lower than 500 °C, since the oxidation temperature of iron sulphate is found lower than that of copper sulphate.
