As we strive for a sustainable and resilient future, repurposing assets has become a top priority. In Australia alone, we have a significant number of mineral projects in the pipeline, extensive existing operations, and over 50 000 legacy sites. Collectively, this presents a unique opportunity to be a world leader in mine rehabilitation. Complex stakeholder landscapes, inflexible policies, aged regulatory frameworks, technical uncertainties and increasing liabilities are all barriers hindering effective transition of legacy assets. The impetus for change is further catalysed by shifting consumer preferences, workforces in flux and regional Australians questioning what the transition means for their local community. We need innovative approaches to take a leading role in the industry and support global efforts more broadly. Co-designing an ambitious, shared vision spanning projects, operations and legacy assets with all key parties is a fundamental step to unlock and realise maximum societal, environmental, economic and reputational value. Serious play and gamification can further enhance this visioning process.

The Ambatovy Nickel Project comprises the development of mine, hydrometallurgical processing facilities and necessary infrastructure in Madagascar, positioning Ambatovy as one of the world’s largest producers of nickel and cobalt from lateritic ore. SNC-Lavalin successfully provided comprehensive Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management (EPCM) services for this major capital project which, apart from its sheer size, scope, and engineering design, represented significant location, infrastructure, labour, environmental and climatic challenges. Today, the project has reached 90% of its nameplate capacity and is in its final performance optimization stage. This paper will discuss the significant project management effort that was required to successfully address the complexity of this major project. It will cover the main project management control systems and the engineering tools and processes used during the detail engineering, procurement, and construction phases to achieve optimum project execution.

"The influence of crystallographic orientation on the pitting corrosion behavior of Ni-Fe-Cr alloy 028 was studied by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), potentiodynamic polarization technique and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results show that there is anisotropy of pitting corrosion that strongly depends on crystallographic orientation of surface planes. The distribution of pits frequency in standard stereographic triangle shows that the crystallographic planes close to {100} are more prone to pitting corrosion compared to planes of {110} and {111}. The calculation of surface energy (001) and (111) shows that the planes of high packing density of atoms have low surface energy with concomitant strong resistance to pitting corrosion. A correlation function between crystallographic orientation and pitting corrosion susceptibility suggests a method not only to predict the pitting resistance of a known textured materials, but also to improve corrosion resistance by controlling materials texture.INTRODUCTIONNickel-iron-chromium(Ni-Fe-Cr) alloys are widely used in various industries and engineering sectors due to their combination of good mechanical properties and high corrosion resistance(Hibner, 2001; Thomas, 2006; Ghosh, 2005).Ni-Fe-Cr alloy 028 (alloy 028)has such important characteristics worth mentioning. Alloy 028 contains high amounts of nickel, copper and molybdenum which improve its resistant to corrosion attack in reducing medium, and presence of high level of chromium makes it more resistant to oxidizing species. Moreover, alloy 028 is less expensive because of higher amount of iron compared to other similar alloys. Currently, alloy 028 is manufactured as evaporator tubes applied in the phosphoric acid production; production tubing and casing used in deep and sour gas wells; heat exchangers employed in nuclear power plants, and seawater-carrying piping and seawater-cooled heat exchangers (Bankiewicz, 2012; Kivisäkk, 2003; Gómez, 2003; Xian, 2012; Bellezze, 2004)"

Conditions encountered at a recently completed brownfields mining project provided valuable insight into, and development of, techniques for working in and around known underground mining voids in an open cut environment. The careful application of underground blasting principles to a pit environment and successful excavation whilst maintaining appropriate stand-off distances were two primary areas of innovation enabling the success of the project.Mary Mac Hill is a gold deposit situated less than 2 km south-west of the town of Laverton, Western Australia. It is owned and mined by Crescent Gold Limited. Previous underground mining by various other mining companies has left an extensive network of underground horizontal development, subvertical stopes and shafts, some of which daylighted at surface. This was identified as potentially posing substantial risks, which would prevent the application of conventional mining methods. Two major stopes were located under a hard banded iron ridge topped by a peak of cap, connected variously by narrow drives and vertical development. Due to the proximity of the first of these stopes to the surface, its dimensions and governed by procedures and advice provided by externally engaged engineers, Crescent Gold could not access the area of the ridge immediately overlying the stope using conventional open cut mining methods. This was the first of many hurdles surmounted in mining this deposit.The following report outlines how the challenges this geometrically complex deposit presented. Solving these problems enabled the team to mine the contained gold ore to a completed design, without subjecting personnel or mining equipment to harm due to a void breach incident. This paper outlines the numerous complications and difficulties Mary Mac Hill posed and explains the strategies developed to overcome them. Enterprise Mine at Mount Isa is to expand ore production from the current 1.4 to 3.5 mtpa by mining the 3500 Orebody, from which production is scheduled to start in February 1998 making this the deepest underground mine in Australia with its lowest mining horizon at nearly 1.6 km below surface. The following fill requirements were defined for the 3500 Orebody during the feasibility study: 1. a minimum filling rate of 250 ma/h, 2. a curing time of 28 days, and 3. minimum free fill water. This paper mainly describes the investigation of high density and paste fills for the 3500 Orebody. The investigation covered all the key issues relating to fill option selection, including design criteria, material supply and demand assessment, drainage modelling, tailing dewatering method, mix design and a pump loop test. Results of the investigation indicate that both high density fill and paste fill are technically feasible. The investigation has led to the selection of a blended tailing paste for the 3500 Orebody as the paste option has significant advantages over high density fill in stope filling rates and fill reticulation. The blended tailing for paste fill is finer than Isa deslimed tailing but coarser than full plant tailing. The paste fill selected has minimum binder and tailing dewatering requirements while a relatively high filling rate is achieved.

Improving upon the past understanding of the interaction between installed rock bolts, the immediate roof and sidewalls is vital for the implementation of sound support system design, as this has a direct impact on rock-related safety. This is the primary goal in rock-bolt-related research. The earliest research in this field concentrated on limited laboratory and in situ measurements accompanied by theoretical analyses, based on the Kirsch equations. This represented the initial insight into understanding relative ground movements and their impact on primary support. However, these studies were far from complete. More recently, major technological advances in computing power within the mining industry has changed the scope from theoretical analysis to computer simulation. Even with these advancements our understanding of rock bolts in situ and in the laboratory has not progressed, particularly concerning bending and shear. To measure the behavior of rock bolts, the widely accepted practice is to populate the bolts with an array of strain gauges. Historically, resistive foil strain gauges or long displacement sensors have been used. Additionally, all instrumented rock bolts have used only two diametrically opposed slots. Rock bolts instrumented with these methods have significant shortcomings, one of which is the inability to capture shear and bending. The shearing and bending of rock bolts are particularly common in tabular soft rock mining, such as coal mining. This paper discusses the use of three slotted rock bolts, cut diametrically 120º apart, and two new optical fiber technologies populated along the entire rock-bolt length.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the interaction of longwall shield supports and adjacent strata at the Meigs No. 31 Mine in southeastern Ohio. Twenty-three legs of twenty shields at midface were instrumented with pressure transducers and monitored for 11 weeks. During the project, leg setting pressures were reduced twice to determine the effect of setting pressure on shield-strata interaction. No correlation was observed between setting pressure and leg loading rates. The shield loading profiles were consistent with a model in which the roof consists of two zones, a thin immediate roof loading the shields well below the typical setting force and a main roof zone essentially supported by the coal and gob and loading shields through its convergence. This model was used to develop an equation for estimating average loading rates at the site. The only variable of the equation is time, and the equation consists of an exponential term to account for the immediate roof loading and a linear term to account for main roof loading. The equation gave good correlation with average loading rates, but the variation in loading from cycle to cycle was too great for the equation to give good predictions of individual cycle loading rates.

Com o aumento da complexidade dos materiais metálicos, duas ou mais fases produto podem nuclear simultaneamente durante uma transformação de fase. A nucleação de novos grãos pode ocorrer por saturação de sítios ou por taxa constante. Neste contexto, esse trabalho busca estudar a influência da transformação simultânea com nucleação por taxa constante de duas fases produto na cinética, na microestrutura e na distribuição do tamanho de grão em uma região tridimensional. A efeito de comparação, também foi realizado o estudo de reações em que uma fase nucleia por saturação de sítios e a outra fase, por taxa constante e ambas iniciam sua transformação no instante inicial, de forma simultânea. Os resultados obtidos computacionalmente foram comparados às equações analíticas, apresentando ótima concordância entre os modelos. Foi observado que parâmetros microestruturais como tamanho médio de grãos e morfologia das interfaces podem auxiliar o pesquisador a identificar o tipo de nucleação, seja por saturação de sítios, seja por taxa constante.

A raíz de una mayor demanda de horas hombre para cumplir con el mantenimiento de la flota de camiones de acarreo de Antamina, se puso en marcha la optimización de la gestión del mantenimiento preventivo (PM), cuyas estrategias principales eran la reducción del tiempo de parada de los camiones por PM y la extensión del intervalo de frecuencia de los PM. Así, se logró extender la frecuencia del PM de cada 250 horas a cada 500 horas y se logró reducir el tiempo de parada mensual por PM de 21.0 a 10.5 h por camión, sin afectar la confiabilidad.

INCREASED mining activity during the past year has brought to light changes in mining practice and advances in technique, born and incubated in the period of depression from which the mining industry is now emerging. Although the tendency toward large output from individual mines has continued, a salutary trend is evident toward greater efficiency at small mines, in which the gold mines of Canada have led the way. Improvement in excavating machinery and washing plants for small placers has continued, and knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of this kind of equipment has increased. Greater portability through sectionalization has been the keynote. Power, shovels and draglines mounted on caterpillar treads move from one deposit to another under their own power, and floating washing plants mounted on pontoons can be taken down, moved, and set up again by a small crew of men in only a few days.

This investigation included a study of three different methods for the acoustic drying of ultrafine coals. Ultrafine coal being defined as coal which passes through a 100 mesh sieve. The first method employed stationary drying of small coal samples in sound fields having frequencies of 12,000 cps and 20,000 cps. Sound intensities up to 150 db were used. The second method employed the use of rotary drying kilns. The effect of such variables as temperature, sound intensity, coal feed rate, air flow rate, and initial moisture content were studied. The third method employed the use of a multi-tiered, vibrating screen dryer. The effect of initial moisture content and residence time were studied.

Fans delivered to the Russian Federation, and eventually to countries of the former U.S.S.R., for mine ventilation must meet the legislative requirements of local jurisdictions. This paper presents a discussion of these legislative requirements and presents examples of fan equipment designed to meet the requirements. The legislative obligations discussed include four (4) separate requirements, including: ?Technical design requirements ? The Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology is responsible to issue a GOST R certification declaring conformance to the requirements ?Operational requirements ? A ?License for Application? must be obtained prior to operation ?Explosion risk requirements ? If the area of operation includes potential for explosion a special certificate must be obtained ?Technical condition requirements ? Market segments within the mining industry require special conditions that must be satisfied Examples of fans designed specifically for use in the Russian Federation are also discussed and examples provided. Designs for fan volume flow control will be highlighted.

"The legacy of abandoned mines in Canada creates issues that impact on both the health and safety of Canadians and the environment. Solutions to the problems of abandoned minesites require a detailed understanding of site conditions, the engineering solutions which may be relevant, and planning for effective use of the land. In this paper, the authors outline the basic thrusts that have been developed at CANMET to address this problem. These include: multiprovincial agreements to develop a national database; methods of site rendering; a ten-year research program to develop engineering approaches; the review of a large number of case studies; and outlining the associated risks. Examples of the applications of this research are provided in the areas of: municipal, provincial, and federal co-operative projects; site-specific applications; and international linkages."

The Bureau of Mines surveyed waste disposal sites at 18 metal and non-metal mines and conducted laboratory and full-scale field tests to de-termine the effects of tailings deposition techniques on physical properties of tailings pond beaches. Survey data included measurements of beach slopes, descriptions of deposition techniques, and measurements of beach physical properties taken at various distances from the point of discharge. Laboratory tests involved depositing two types of tailings, each with different grain-size distributions, into a settling trough and determining the resultant physical properties of settled materials along the length of the beach. Side confinement and the closeness of the water pool to the point of deposition caused the laboratory results to be inconclusive. Full-scale field deposition tests conducted at the tailings pond of a cooperating mine showed that there were similarities in relationships between exit velocities of tailings slurry and physical properties of the settled tailings on the beach.

THREE OF the gold mines in the Red Lake Camp operates fluid bed roasters in their milling circuits. The mines are Campbell Red Lake, Cochenour Willans, and Dickenson. The roasters are used for the autogenous roasting of a flotation concentrate for subsequent gold recovery by cyanidation. Cochenour and Dickenson operate single stage reactors, whilst Campbell use a two-stage system. Ore treated by the mines is similar in that the major part of the gold is associated with arsenopyrite. Other sulphides present are pyrite, pyrrhotite, stibnite and sphalerite. Gangue minerals are mainly quartz, with carbonates and talc. Mineralization is, for the most part, extremely fine, and there is intimate association between sulphides and quartz, so much so, th at a picked specimen of apparently massive arsenopyrite will frequently contain as much as 80 per cent gangue. Using granular media for removal of soluble manganese from mine water and industry waste stream has the advantage of forming a compact surface layer of manganese oxide coating on the media. This process can avoid the step involving the separation of voluminous sludge of manganese hydroxide by the high-pH method for soluble manganese removal. The removal of soluble manganese is accomplished by adsorption and oxidation. The adsorption of Mn(II) on the manganese oxide-coated media was rapid through the specific adsorption and may be due to the ion exchange of hydroxyl ions on the manganese oxide by Mn(II). In the subsequent step, the adsorbed Mn(II) form the intermediate manganese complex on the manganese oxide product is oxidized with dissolved oxygen or other available oxidant source in the aqueous solution. This paper presents the efficiency of removal of soluble manganese from mine water by using a laboratory fluidized bed and the recovery of manganese oxide coating on the anthracite coal particles. In order to accelerate the formation of the manganese oxide layer on the surface of anthracite media, dilute potassium permanganate solution is used as an active oxidant. The effects of operation parameters on the manganese removal including pH, flow rate, concentration of feed and oxidant dosage are evaluated.

"INTRODUCTION In most oil fields, natural gas is the major source of energy causing flow of oil to the well. The amount of gas Produced with the oil generally exceeds actual energy requirements, so that in time the gas reserve of the field becomes seriously depleted and the oil production must be stimulated by some auxiliary means. One of these is to repressure the oil formation with natural gas; or, where a gas supply is not available, often air is used.Although P.ir is a Cheap and convenient repressuring medium, its use sometimes is attended with several disadvantages. First, the return air-gas mixture decreases rapidly in fuel value, often until it can be used no longer as a source of power. At the same time, explosive mixtures may result if recycling is used, causing hazards to life and equipment. Second, some fields experience considerable trouble with the formation of emulsions which become increasingly difficult to treat. Although there is no definite proof that air repressuring always causes these emulsions, many operators are convinced that this is the case. The Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., has been interested in problems connected with air-repressuring for a number of years. Some time was spent in studying the so-called ""bad gas""--return,mixture of low fuel value. However, it appeared impossible to attack the problem successfully from this angle, and an approach was made through a laboratory--scale study of direct oxidation of crude oil."

Design of a new underground laboratory is underway through the auspices of the United States National Science Foundation. The Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is scoped to provide a diverse group of researchers with a dedicated underground facility capable of supporting a broad spectrum of fundamental and applied research at depth in the Earth?s crust. Key research partners in the endeavor are physicists, biologists, geoscientists and engineers. Engineers are not only designing the underground facilities, but are also actively involved in developing research initiatives. This paper will introduce the DUSEL engineering research program to the mining community, provide an overview of the site, geology, and laboratory facilities, and describe some key program initiatives. The particular technical challenges and opportunities afforded by the construction of DUSEL and the performance of the integrated science-engineering program will be discussed by reference to a subset of research initiatives that are currently under development: Cavern Design, CO2 Sequestration and Transparent Earth. These research initiatives target the development of new techniques that can support improved subsurface investigation, design and construction procedures. An increased use of the subsurface can actively contribute to the development of new, more sustainable solutions for use in mining and civil engineering practice.
