"RESUMELa calcination contrôlée de 10 serpentine permet de produire de 10 magnésie active. Le degré de I'activation est mesure par 10 solubilité du magnésium dans les acides faibles tel que I'acide acétique, La serpentine contenue dans les résidus d'amiante du Québec peut donc être activée par calcination. Le teneur en magnésie active des rejets d'amiante calcinés est fonction de divers paramètres: température, temps de calcination, granulométrie, etc. Les rejets d'amiante de différentes provenances démontrent des comportements thermochimiques différents qui sont étudiés dans Ie présent travail au moyen d'ATD, de TG, de la diffraction des rayons X et de la lixivation par l'acide acétique. On constate qu'un maximum d'environ 80% de la magnésie totale peut être activé dans certains rejets d'amiante du Québec et Ie degré d'activation dépend de la provenance.vIntroductionOn sait depuis longtemps que la serpentine, Mg3Si2O5(OH)4, un silicate hydroxylé de magnésium, devient amorphe lorsqu'elle perd de I'eau d'hydratation entre 600 et 700 °C. La serpentine ainsi calcinée est alors dissociée en magnésie et en silice. Cette magnésie, dite active, est soluble dans un acide faible ou même dans les solutions de sels d'ammonium.Plusieurs precédés chimiques ont été proposés afin d'extraire sous forme de composés magnésiens la magnésie de la serpentine. La plupart de ces procédés comportent une activation par calcination de la serpentine préalablement à une Iixiviation par un acide ou par une solution d'un sel d'ammonium.Malgré la contamination par Ie fer et par d'autres éléments, les compositions chimiques des rejets de différentes mines d 'amiante du Québec, présentées au tableau 1, sont très proches de la serpentine typique. Puisque Ie degré d'activation de la magnésie varie grandement d'une serpentine à I'autre lors de la calcination, la première étape de la recherche sur la transformation chimique des rejets d'amiante du Québec se résume à une étude de leurs comportements thermochimiques."

In my paper on " End-Lines and Side-Lines in the Mining Law," read at the New York meeting of February, 1889 (Trans., xvii., 787), I discussed certain points involving the rights of a locator, B, who had located and surveyed a piece of ground, X + Y, of which only Y was properly subject to location, X being already held by another claimant, and had applied for and received a patent, granting X + Y, " excepting and excluding X." The paper concluded with the following questions : " Is there any difference in effect between the grant to him of Y simply and the grant of X + Y, ' excepting and excluding X' ? Why should any mining locator stake out his boundaries upon another location, and thus appear to assert a claim which he immediately withdraws? What is the legal force of such boundaries, established upon the land of another?" After calling attention to the fact that the entrance upon another's land for such a purpose is a trespass, and the principle that no trespasser can create by his trespass any right which he would not have without it, I reserved to another occasion a review of the history of the absurd practice of imaginary boundaries for mining claims, and a discussion of their legal effect. This practice is founded, of course, in the regulations and decisions of the United States General Land Office. There is nothing in the Revised Statutes which hints at it. On the contrary, the terms of Section 2322, giving to a locator " the exclusive right of possession and enjoyment" of the surface of his claim, seems clearly to forbid the use of that surface for the boundary-stakes of another locator. But the Act of 1866, though it provided for the issue of patents upon payment to the Government of so much per acre, and really by implication (as I have always believed) involved the absolute grant of the surface, was not so construed by the courts generally, or by the Land Office. Steel refining reactors based on chemical heating are being used as an alternative to ladle furnaces, They show a high degree of flexibility in respect to heating rate in addition to carrying out refining reactions such as de-S, inclusion removal, alloying etc. IR-UT and CAS-OB are examples of such reactors. Their performance is dependent upon geometrical characteristics as well as operational conditions which determine the flow field inside the vessel. A physical model of the IR-UT process of the Companhia Siderúrgica de Tubarão, steel plant located in Serra, Espirito Santo, Brazil, was developed to assess the features of the flow field and its influence on the metallurgical behavior. Results of the physical model were used to optimize the process parameters in the industrial unit.

Otimizar o consumo dos insumos energéticos e coprodutos é uma tarefa de suma importância na busca de competitividade das usinas siderúrgicas. O gás de alto forno é um importante componente dessa matriz energética e a maximização do seu consumo reduz sensivelmente os custos com a compra de outros combustíveis. Nesse cenário, o controle de nível dos gasômetros, equipamentos existentes nas siderúrgicas que exercem um papel fundamental na distribuição desse gás, não é trivial. Distúrbios e variações entre geração e consumo dificultam o desafio de manter a segurança operacional e ao mesmo tempo otimizar o consumo. Procedimentos operacionais e técnicas convencionais de controle não são suficientes para evitar perdas com a queima desse gás nas tochas de segurança (flares) dos altos fornos. Esse trabalho apresenta um caso real do uso de técnicas de controle preditivo MPC (Model Predictive Control) e regulatório para a distribuição em tempo real do gás de alto forno para os principais consumidores na Vallourec Tubos do Brasil em Belo Horizonte.

Devido à possibilidade de se remover quantidades muito pequenas de material de cada vez, a ablação seletiva por laser tem se mostrado um método muito eficaz para remoção de finas camadas de materiais depositados sobre um substrato. Neste trabalho, um laser de femtossegundo foi utilizado para remoção de um filme fino de nitreto de titânio (TiN) depositado sobre um substrato de carboneto de tungstênio (WC), configuração comum em pastilhas de usinagem mecânica, objetivando fornecer um método eficiente para tal processo. Os limiares de ablação do filme e do substrato foram determinados, evidenciando a problemática do trabalho, remover um filme com limiar maior que o substrato. Um sistema de controle de espectrometria de emissão atômica induzida por laser (LIBS) foi testada, com a intenção de controlar em tempo real, a espécie do material ablacionado, mostrando-se muito eficiente. Os parâmetros do laser bem como da varredura de usinagem ainda estão sendo testados para definir a viabilidade do processo.

THE structure of the equiaxed zone of several A1-Cu samples mechanically stirred during unidirectional solidification was examined. The stirring was produced by rotary oscillation of the mold about its vertical axis.' It was found that in Some samples the structure is not of the same type over the whole of the equiaxed zone; it consists of regions with two different etching responses. Fig. 1 shows this structure in a Al-1 wt pct ku sample. The lighter etching regions with a coarse structure form something like a network and the darker etching regions with a finer structure can be observed as the continuation of the coarse structure inside this network. The difference in size and shape of the dendrite branches (they are rounded in the coarser structure) is similar to that found by Williamson and Chalmers in ice crystals solidified in undercooled water: when the amount of undercooling was small, the ice crystals were more rounded and coarser than these solidified with a larger amount of undercooling.' It seems justified to conclude that the observed structure resulted from solidification under different thermal conditions: the coarser structure solidified first out of the "purer" liquid and with a smaller amount of undercooling and the finer was formed later out of solute-enriched liquid under conditions of much more rapid heat extraction. A considerable change in the heat flow conditions at the later stages of solidification can be easily understood by taking into account that the coarser crystals form a continuous network and the amount of trapped liquid is relatively small; hence the contribution of latent heat is much smaller in the later stages of solidification. The difference in structure and etching characteristic reflects a difference in composition between these two regions. It was found that the darker etching re- gions are harder (30.4 to 31.3 HV5) than the lighter etching ones (25 to 26 HV5). A similar type of structure was found in a A1-4 wt pct Cu sample grown by Czochralski method. Fig. 2 shows the structure in the lower part of a sample grown slowly and then decanted by a rapid removing of the sample from the melt. In a few places trapped liquid solidified in the same manner as in the sample shown in Fig. 1.

Information presented herein was gathered by examination of 29 fluidized-bed thermal coal dryers and by conferences with manufacturers and users of such equipment to determine what safety features could b incorporated in design, installation, and op ration to minimize fire and explosion hazards. Fire and explosion hazards are inherent in certain types of coal dryers in that high temperatures are employed; the sizes and volatility of material handled are capable of propagating explosions; and drying gases are seldom, if ever, low enough in oxygen content to prevent ignitions of dust clouds, distilled gases, or their combinations. This is especially true for fluidized-bed dryers in which the coal is dried in air suspension and in which atmospheric air is constantly introduced to temper the heated furnace gases. Occurrence of fires on hated bedplates, in dust collectors, and in hot gas inlets was common in nearly all the dryers examined. Forceful explosions which produced external effects had occurred in 11 (39 percent), and internal "puffs" or ?bumps? had occurred in at least 24 (79 percent) of the plants examined in the study.

"Wear damage is responsible for very high maintenance costs and significant production losses in the oil sands industry of northern Alberta.It affects all areas of operations and involves a panoply of wear mechanisms from low stress sliding abrasion at extremely frigid temperatures during winter mining, to elevated temperature erosion/corrosion in processes where bitumen is converted to lighter hydrocarbon products.There is no universal panacea to defend against such diverse attack and a wide selection of resistant materials and systems is employed. These range from relatively soft rubbers which rely on their elastic properties for their protective capability, to some of the hardest ceramics and cermets which are currently available commercially.Details are presented of the characteristics and forms of the variety of wear materials being used and how they relate to the requirements of their areas of application. The review focuses on the practices followed at Syncrude Canada Ltd., which is the larger of the two commercial oil sands plants."

The direct production of metal from a sphalerite concentrate is an attractive route for primary zinc. A series of operations and conditions have been selected to efficiently cause the following overall exothermic reaction. The process uses a continuous circulation of molten copper for material and energy transfer between the unit operations. Sulfide concentrate is reduced with an excess of superheated copper to make a copper alloy and white metal. The alloy is stripped of volatile metals under vacuum and some metals can be separately condensed. The residual copper and the white metal are fed into a copper converter to be blown with oxygen for desulfurizing and the superheated copper is recycled. The paper will include a detailed material flow sheet for the process, discussion of the operating conditions of the individual units, behavior of minor elements, and zinc quality.

At present, over 85% of the world’s rare earth oxides are produced from the bastnäsite ores, found mainly in China. Meanwhile, the ion adsorption ores are the most important sources for heavy rare earth production. As the demand for rare earth materials in the world increases, other forms of rare earth deposits will become new potential resources of rare earth production in the future. In this paper, flotation performance of a steenstrupine ore from the Kvanefjeld deposit for rare earth recovery was studied through laboratory bench testwork. The effects of various factors including grinding size and collector dosage on recovery and selectivity of the selected rare earth elements, La, Ce and Y, were investigated. A rare earth concentrate with the grades of La 2.8 wt%, Ce 5.1 wt% and Y 1.0 wt% at recoveries of 80.5% La, 79.8% Ce and 55.3% Y was obtained in optimum conditions. "En la actualidad mundial, la exploración de zonas mineralizadas se hace cada vez más restringido, dada la demanda de metales y el progresivo agotamiento de las reservas. Por ello, se realizan estudios geológicos previos que permitan una exploración sistemática de las minas a mayor profundidad. Siguiendo esta ruta, el éxito del descubrimiento de algunas zonas mineras en el Perú, radicaría en las áreas donde la erosión es un factor determinante de la trascendencia o intrascendencia del tonelaje del mineral. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del presente trabajo, es señalar las características de los métodos modernos de exploración minera, aplicados al enfoque de las áreas principales para un futuro explotación de tonelajes de mena. "Portions of the Catholic Total Abstinence Fountain in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, Pa., were in “imminent danger,” according to a restoration services request for proposals (RFP) issued by the City of Philadelphia in August 2014. Open voids in the subsurface beneath the foundation were causing ongoing settlement of the fountain.The fountain was unveiled in 1876 as an ornamental drinking fountain for the Centennial International Exhibition, which celebrated the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Its creation was commissioned by the Catholic Total Abstinence Union of America, an Irish temperance organization that advocated for total abstinence from alcohol. Ironically, the fountain ran dry decades ago.The now-defunct fountain features a 100 ft (30.5 m) wide granite base with three steps in the shape of a Maltese cross. The centerpiece — enclosed by a 40 ft (12.2 m) diameter basin — is a 15 ft (4.6 m) tall statue of Moses perched atop an iglooshaped marble mound. Four subsidiary statues rise from granite pedestals at the tips of each arm of the cross, including Archbishop John Carroll, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Father Theobald Mathew and Commodore John Barry.Natural and Man-Made DamageThe City of Philadelphia’s RFP called attention to three “high priority structural areas.” It was noted that Moses, Father Mathew and the steps surrounding the fountain had been documented as public hazards. The long-term effects of water infiltration had set in, eroding mortar joints and causing some stones to jut out. Furthermore, the stone base supporting the 16 ton (14.5 tonne) statue of Moses was in danger of collapsing. The statue of Father Mathew had been struck by lightning in 1910 and was repaired with an iron and metal pin anchor system, which had succumbed to corrosion. The city considered the statue of Father Mathew as the most threatened of the statues. Mike Miluski, P.E., vice president of Compaction Grouting Services (CGS), recalled “the fountain was in pretty bad shape” as he walked onto the site in August 2016 and immediately recognized the challenges ahead."

Arch Mineral Corporation and Rocky Mountain Energy's Medicine Bow Mine in Wyoming presented an interesting challenge to the concept of mining a multiple-seam, dipping coal in the Hanna Basin. The 3362 and 2962 pits at MBCC were designed in a multiple seam coal consisting of 4 (and in some areas 5) bands of coal; these coal beds are all in the Ferris formation. The area was subject to some localized faulting and a major fault caused a physical restraint that we mined up against in our final cut. Using a 1570 dragline as the principal stripping machine, the concept of developing a bench for stripping the lower seams from the low-wall side of the pit was initiated. The results of this method of stripping were very satisfying for this pit through the completion of pit life and prompted us to use it in other areas at MBCC and at our other operations. Mining a dipping coal presents a small twist to conventional "flat" coal stripping. The spoil has a tendency to continually try to slide into the pit and the increased overburden on each cut as you mine down the dip creates spoil problems unless adequate design provisions are made prior to stripping.

There currently exists no viable means of obtaining continuous feedback on blast efficiency. This paper describes the adaptation of a loading shovel to serve as a diagnostic tool to evaluate the success of ground preparation. Work undertaken in a large western Canadian open pit involved microprocessor-based instrumentation for the performance monitoring of an electric mining shovel. The monitored shovel responses proved to be reliable indicators of variations in muckpile diggability. This approach is considered to provide a very comprehensive survey of post blast conditions since such a shovel interacts which every cubic yard of a blast.

On May 15, 1936, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct certain studies, experiments, and. investigations of subbituminous coal and lignite.4/ Appropriations were made in July 19 7, and since that date an active investigation has been underway to complete the provisions of the act. Part of the investigation has included a comprehensive survey of the known properties of the lower-rank non-coking coals, and provisions were made to obtain more data on certain varieties. In line with this plan, a typical subbituminous coal was selected for an extended series of tests in the standard. Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association unit,5/ at the Central Experiment Station. This particular noncoking coal was the first one of its rank that had been tested in the apparatus; for this reason the results are of particular interest because the testing apparatus was originally designed for use in studying the coke- and gas-making properties of coking coals. The test as described below has been developed by the Bureau of Mines since 1927 through a cooperative agreement with the American Gas Association.6/ Ninety to 180 pounds of coal is heated in a circular retort, 13 to 18 inches in diameter, at wall temperatures ranging from 500°C. to 1,110°C. in 100°C. steps. All products are collected and measured; their physical and chemical properties are then carefully determined to ascertain the gas- and coke-making properties of the coal. During the last 10 years approximately 50 representative American coals have been tested in the Bureau of Mines equipment. The results on the first 30 coals and a complete description of the test procedure are contained in a joint publication of the Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Association.7/ The remaining twenty coals have been reported in Bureau of Mines reports as Technical Papers and Bulletins.

"The thermochemical technology for recovery gold, silver from mature flotation tailings of pyrite ores by two-stage sintering with chlorine-ammonium reagents and leaching of bakes with water is developed. The economic effect of the technology implementation is calculated. KEYWORDS Gold and silver recovery, mature flotation tailings, pyrite ores, chlorine-ammonium reagents, leaching INTRODUCTION The relevance of processing the technogenic reserves of ore mining and concentration wastes accumulated over the long operation periods of mineral deposits is beyond doubt. Hundreds of tons of precious and non-ferrous metals that were not recovered during the primary processing are concentrated in the accumulated wastes. For example, tailing storage facilities (TSF) at the mineral processing plants in the Southern Urals region of Russia hold more than one hundred tons of gold and thousands of tons of silver in the mature flotation tailings (MFT) of copper pyrite ores. Secondary processing of technogenic materials is facilitated by the fact that they are preprocessed — ground and compactly deposited on the surface, but complicated by the low (compared to ores) grade, uneven distribution of the valuable minerals, altered and unstable material composition of the mineral feed. This leads to low recovery rates of valuable metals by conventional physicochemical processing methods. It is necessary to develop innovative methods of deep integrated processing of industrial wastes, based on the study of the material composition of specific technogenic mineral resources and based on ensuring the environmental safety of the resulting secondary waste. MATERIALS AND METHODS The object of this study are the MFT of Uchaly Concentrator in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia, which processes copper pyrite and copper-zinc ores. According to the data of particle size, chemical, X-ray phase, and optical microscopic analyzes, samples of the MFT are characterized by considerable particle fineness (the fraction of the size class -41 µm is 89-90%), low grade of gold (1.7-2.0 g/t) and silver (18.0-19.5 g/t), comparable grades of iron (23.0-26.8%) and sulfur (28.1-28.7), but different grades of copper (0.12 - 0.73%) and zinc (0.34-1.26%). The most common mineral in the samples is pyrite (50 - 56%), found in intergrowth with grains of other sulfides (0.1-4%) - sphalerite, tennantite, chalcopyrite, covellite. Quartz and aluminosilicates are the dominant rock minerals (21-36%). Based on the results of the phase analysis, it was established that approximately 70% of the gold in the samples is found in a form that is resistant to cyanidation — it is locked in sulfides (52-56%) and quartz and coated by films. Along with sulfides and rock minerals, common gold and silver minerals (chalcogenides, intermetallides, native gold) in the form of submicro- and nano-sized precipitates are also associated with intergrowth of a complex structure. These features of the material composition allow classifying the MFT of the pyrite ores as a mature feed material and emphasize the need for chemical non-cyanide methods to recover gold and silver from the mature minerals and associations they are found in."

Occidental Oil Shale Inc. has spent the last eight years at its Logan Wash. mine near DeBeque, Colorado, developing its modified in-situ oil shale process for obtaining oil from oil shale. Modified in-situ technology involves large underground chambers, or retorts, which are formed by mining out a minimal volume of rock to allow explosive expansion of the surrounding rock into tile mined void volumes. The resulting rubblized retort volume must contain a fairly uniform particle size distribution and void distribution to permit maximum oil recovery during subsequent in-situ processing operations. The more uniform the rubblized volume of particles, the more oil recovery obtained during processing. The processing involves first igniting the top of the retort and then. injecting air into the top of the retort to drive the combustion front downward through the entire rubblized volume. The oil is continuously collected at the bottom of the retort during the processing.
