The main source of Mn in raw materials for SiMn production is Mn-ore and Mn-rich slag from the high carbon FeMn production. The amount of slag per tonne of SiMn metal is mainly determined by the ore/slag ratio. Increasing share of FeMn slag at expense of Mn-ore will lead to larger slag/metal ratio in the SiMn process. High volume of slag leads to an increased consumption of energy and probably to higher losses of metal inclusions in the final slag. Excavation of a SiMn furnace has shown that only modest pre-reduction of Mn-ore with CO gas seems to be obtained. Nearly all reduction of MnO was finished at the top of the cokebed. Dissolution and reduction of quartz obviously takes place in the cokebed zone after the main reduction of manganese oxide is finished. Probably the ?pick up? of Si in the metal is quite fast and takes place as the metal trickles down through the cokebed towards the metal bath. The distribution of Si between SiMn alloys and multicomponent MnO-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO slags is mainly determined by the process temperature, the silica content of the slag and its R-ratio = (CaO+MgO)/Al2O3. As an example, the equilibrium content of Si in the alloy will increase by about 6 % if the R-ratio is reduced from 2 to 1, provided constant temperature and silica content. The effect of temperature is also considerable. The equilibrium content of silicon will increase by approximately 6 % per 50°C in the temperature range 1550°C to 1700°C. The equilibrium content of MnO in SiMn slags depends first of all on the temperature and secondly on the silica content of the slag. At 1600°C the MnO content decreases from about 9 % at silica saturation to a minimum of about 3-4% when the silica content is reduced to about 40-45%.

The transport of fluid, heat ,and particles (bubbles and solid inclusions) in flowing molten steel is investigated in steel refining ladles, the continuous casting tundish, continuous casting mold and strand, and steel ingot casting processes. The two-equation k-?? model is used to simulate the turbulence. Multiphase fluid flow is numerically simulated with a Lagrangian-Eulerian approach, an Eularian-Eulerian approach and the Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method. The simulation can predict inclusion trajectories, inclusion removal fraction, free surface waves and other phenomena, which can be used to optimize these important metallurgical operations.

A crosshole seismic imaging (tomography) experiment has been carried out in an underground mine in order to delineate waste rock within a massive sulphide ore body. Data comprising 1526 travel time measurements were inverted to yield a compressional wave speed image consistent with, and adding to, knowledge of the extent of the waste inclusions. An effective method of resolving travel time discrepancies measured on reversed ray paths is presented.

The International Seabed Authority and a number of countries have or are in the process of developing environmental impact assessment guidelines and legislation for seafloor mineral development. The formal decision to grant a project an environmental permit is based on an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA), culminating in an environmental impact statement (EIS). The EIS needs to be supported by sufficient data upon which an assessment of impacts can be made and mitigation measures developed. Given the remote locations of many seafloor prospects, collection of sufficient environmental data to inform an EIS is often a difficult, expensive and lengthy process.

New Trade Status for Mainland China--On January 24, the Congress approved a most-favored-nation trade status with Mainland China for both imports and exports. A Presidential Proclamation had been issued earlier in anticipation of the Congressional action. Import duties on such commodities as tungsten, mercury, and antimony are automatically decreased. Defense Production Act Extended--The Defense Production Act of 1950 was extended 60 days to March 28, 1980. The provision for the usual 2-year extension of the Act is reportedly included in an omnibus energy bill that is tied up in committee. The Act under Title III provides for the expansion of productive capacity and supply and, more specifically, it gives priority to defense contracting where defense and non-defense interests conflict

For the purpose of comparing the amounts of dust produced by various mining operations, samples of atmospheric dust were collected during a complete cycle of drilling, blasting and mucking at or near the face of the Bureau's Mount Weather testing adit while the efficiency of several types of stemming in metal-mine blasting was being investigated. After a five year period representing the strongest resource and commodity rally ever experienced, we are now faced with a subdued recovery following the global financial crisis. This renewed economic growth will be steady but eventually attain levels that reignite export demand out of China and other emerging nations, which are now reliant on increasing domestic demand to support their economies. This backdrop of weaker share prices and less available investment capital creates a greater imperative for company management to ensure that its share price is fully valued. The mining geologist plays an important role in achieving this outcome through direct estimation of asset value (resources) but also in strongly communicating the æupsideÆ value opportunity in both mine site and adjacent brownfields exploration and an efficient and technically sound mining operation. The contribution of mining geologists to assist in conducting analyst site visits should not be underestimated, particularly with reduced analyst coverage of the resources sector and some simplification in company analysis through ranking companies on Reserve and Resource positions.

Lost foam casting patterns are foamed polystyrene shapes glued together into the shape of the part to be cast and are coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably land-filled. In this study, a process is developed for the recovery of foamed polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and density separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene.

It was with humility that I accepted the invitation of the Board of Directors of our Institute to deliver the Twentieth Howe Memorial Lecture. Many previous lecturers could speak from personal experience of the great work done by Professor Howe. It was not my privilege to be one of his students but, indirectly, I came under the influence of his work many years ago. My mentor in Metallurgy at Carnegie Institute of Technology, Prof. Fred Crab tree, was an ardent admirer of Professor Howe and his work. Professor Crabtree taught me early to appreciate Professor Howe's love of truth and keen desire to find a scientific reason for every metallurgical phenomenon. In this early search, Professor Howe encountered many unexplainable facts. Nevertheless, in the classic text, "The Metallurgy of Steel," published in 1891, he indicated that he believed Research could light the way. Under the heading of "The Treachery of Steel" he said: "In the early use of Bessemer and Open Hearth Steel, many then unexplained and hence mysterious failures occurred. With our present knowledge, an easy explanation of most of them would probably have been seen. But even today certain unexplained and apparently inexpli- cable failures occur in steel; inexplicable in spite of full and intelligent investigation." Then Professor Howe continued to talk about "the trustworthiness of steel" in the following manner: First, the steel-maker has learned by experience. He knows today far better the effects of a high percentage of carbon or of phosphorus; of cracks, pipes and blow-holes; of segregation and imperfect mixing; of over-heating; of finishing too hot or too cold. Knowing, he guards against them more effectually, and keeps at home much steel that he would formerly have sent into the market. Those who would not, or could not learn and do, have been driven out of the business; the conditions necessary for producing good sound steel by the acid Bessemer and the acid Open Hearth processes have been mastered. By and by, the basic process came along with new conditions, new liabilities to unsoundness, a great hue and cry about mysterious fractures followed, and Lloyd's register provisionally forbade the use of basic steel. Much basic steel was irregular and brittle throughout; too much carbon, too much phosphorus, too cold teemings—imperfect mixing. Still there was little doubt that, with further experience, these difficulties of the basic process would be mastered as those of the acid process had been. This shows that Professor Howe could not take anything for granted. Believing that careful research would find the answer to all mysterious phenomena, he was several generations ahead of the practical acceptance and adoption of this principle.

BESIDES commanding increasing importance as an alloying element in combination with ferrous and other nonferrous metals, the variety of uses for pure nickel continues to widen. For coinage it is growing in popularity. These coins have been minted for 27 countries in 72 issues representing 69 denominations. Approximately 3,000,000,000 pieces have been struck, the aggregate weight, of which amounts to nearly 14,000 tons. . Danzig, Iraq and Japan are the most recent governments to adopt, pure nickel coinage. France is adding the denomination of five francs to its other nickel currency; they replace silver pieces. Germany is now minting a new issue of one Reichsmark coins of pure nickel. The Japanese program for 1933 called for the issue of 35,000,000 10-sen pieces and 30,000,000 5-sen pieces. Asbestos is a generic term for industrially useful fibers recovered from exploitable deposits of the asbestiform varieties of five silicate minerals: chrysotile, anthophyllite, actinolite-tremolite, cummingtonite-grunerite, and riebeckite. Asbestos and asbestiformm fibers of some other minerals are known to be carcinogenic. Minerals crystallized in the asbestiform habit are characterized by unique properties (morphology, strength and flexibility, physical and chemical durability, and defect-free surface structures). The key to the unusual properties, and health effects, of asbestifarm fibers appears to be in their unusual surface structure. In contrast, non-asbestiform crystals of the same minerals, including the five so-called asbestos minerals do not have these properties and are not carcinogenic (1, 2).

A variety of grades of very white muscovite mica are now being produced from sedimentary sands and clays in Central Georgia. The mica is naturally concentrated near the base of the lens-shaped kaolin deposits and also disseminated in associated quartz sands. The same weathering and bacterial alteration processes which have transformed the kaolins from dark organic muds to white pigment-grade industrial clays have also removed discoloring iron from the micas and developed unusually white muscovite. Further, chemical alteration has removed some potassium from the muscovite atomic structure, resulting in an easily delaminated mica which can be cleaved to unusually fine, high bulking, high aspect ratio products. The peculiar alteration history of these sedimentary micas enables production of some of the whitest, finest particle size, and thinnest aspect ratio muscovite mica products on the world market today. Raw mica feed is obtained from kaolin and sand processing by-products, and also from beneath the useful base of abandoned kaolin mines. The processed ultrafine and filler grade muscovite mica products are used for paint, plastics, cosmetics, mold release, thermal and electrical insulation, epoxy, and dry wall joint cement markets.

The first major project in Boston's new access to Logan Airport was an Immersed Tube Tunnel which extended 3,600 ft. from South Boston to East Boston across Boston Harbor. Twelve tube sections, 300 ft. long x 80 ft. wide x 40 ft. high, were lowered into an excavated trench which was then backfilled. The depth of the trench at mid-channel was approximately 100 ft. below mean high tide. At the East Boston end the tube terminated close to the present shoreline. At the South Boston end the tube terminated approximately 600 ft. inland from the shore line where a ventilation building was required. The depth to subgrade from existing ground at the ventilation structure was approximately 85 ft. The soil profile at this location consisted of 50 ft. of miscellaneous rubble fill, 25 ft. of Boston blue clay, and 10 ft. of glacial till. A small amount of weathered argellite existed at the north end of the structure. Part of the Morrison Knudsen, Interbeton, J.F. White, Joint Venture contract to construct the Immersed Tube Tunnel (ITT) was the construction of a cofferdam at the tube/ventilation building interface. The ventilation building was to be built as part of another contract. The construction of the cofferdam and the excavation to the building subgrade was the responsibility of J.F. White Contracting Company.

The Wainui Mill was conceived as a 60 - 90 t/d central mill to process gold ores of the Thames area of New Zealand from small mines in the district. The ores of the region exhibit various degrees of refractory response to conventional cyanidation leach due to the fineness of the gold, and association with pyrite. The alternative circuits involving cyanidation, flotation, and possible small-scale smelting are examined. The environmental impacts have been audited by the Commission for the Environment and were found to be acceptable.

Introduction This Instructor’s Copy contains most of the information needed to use the Wearing Hearing Protection Properly 3-D training reel. It offers practical suggestions on how to use the reel as a training aid, performance objectives for deciding if the training is appropriate for your needs, and discussion notes that provide additional information to the user. The 3-D reel was designed as a self-teaching aid that drillers and others who work at a drill site can use wherever the opportunity for such training presents itself. The latter could be a company preshift requirement or a tailgate session where workers would have an opportunity to view and discuss the reel. It could also be an individual looking at the reel in a pickup truck prior to beginning work at a drill site. The 3-D training reel is versatile in that it can be used for a small group of persons or for a single worker. For any of these situations, information is transferred to the individual by viewing each of the seven colorful, in-depth 3-D scenes and relating the words that appear in each scene to what is depicted in the visual. One of the fundamental issues having a great influence on the safety of operations performed in underground mines is the support of workings which should assure their stability in a given geological setting and mining-technical conditions during the life of their use. The process of designing and planning support for roadways may use analytical and empirical, as well as numerical methods. In view of the rapid increase in the data processing capacity of computers and the development of more and more enhanced software for numerical modeling, it seems to be advantageous to use numerical methods in searching for design solutions ? especially in the case of non-typical mining and geological conditions and in cases that need to take into consideration a great number of factors. The assessment of rock mass quality is of basic significance in designing mine supports. Fractures, dividing the rock mass into blocks, have an essential influence on the stability of the rock mass and underground construction. This paper presents examples of the fundamental underground investigations on the rock mass conducted by the Department of Extraction Technologies and Mining Supports of the Central Mining Institute in Poland, such as: penetrometric tests, introscopic examination, laboratory testing of rock samples and ground penetrating radar. Moreover, this contribution also presents examples of applications of three-dimensional numerical modeling for the purposes of stress-strain analysis of the rock mass around mine workings and computer-aided support design by means of FLAC3D (developed by Itasca) and Cosmos/M (developed by Structural Research and Analysis Corporation).
