With the rapid development of renewable energy technology, such as electricity reserves, to store energy for electric or electric vehicles, environmentally friendly energy sources are expected to continue to be fulfilled according to mobility and stationary energy needs. Lithium is the most attractive candidate for energy storage development. The presence of lithium in Indonesia in the Sidoarjo mud content is interesting to be used as an alternative source of raw materials. During the research, sulfuric acid acted as a solvent, and hydrogen peroxide acted as an oxidation agent. Lithium recovery will be studied using a leaching process at various temperatures (30, 45, and 60 °C) and sulfuric acid concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 mol/L). The increasing temperature, sulfuric acid concentration, and hydrogen peroxide concentration will directly affect the lithium recovery. An increase in sulfuric acid concentration will be directly proportional to the recovery of lithium in the solution. Optimum conditions were obtained at varying 6 mol/L sulfuric acid concentrations and 60 °C temperature variations. The shrinking core model (SCM) studied leaching kinetics, and ash layer diffusion acted as a rate-controlling process. The activation energy of the leaching process was obtained at 38.90 kJ/mol.

Considering the simplistic assumptions and limitations involved in simple analytical solutions and practical difficulties involved in conducting conventional full-scale explosion tests for evaluating 120 psi seal designs, there is a need for developing new scientific methods and engineering practices for design, analysis and evaluation of mine seals.

"This paper examines the design issues associated with the integration of mineral processing within underground mining using a total systems approach. It demonstrates conceptual integrated system design options appropriate to a range of geological scenarios. Particular reference is then given to a case study of stoping in narrow base metal veins.The performance of such integrated systems in terms of productivity, economical and environmental criteria is demonstrated by means of simulation. Particular attention is given to the potential benefits to mine waste management. Processing technologies appear to offer genuine potential benefits, while underground mining methods may need to evolve further to facilitate full integration. This paper is based on industry supported research aimed at developing selective and clean underground mining systems. IntroductionTotal systems thinking is simple in principle but complex to implement. The premise is that to achieve optimum effectiveness and efficiency from a system, the complete system must be considered. Using this approach will avoid the situation where the optimization of a localized component of any system results in a negative impact on the performance of the complete system. Take for example the parts manager who reduces inventory costs without consideration of the consequences to the plant. If the plant goes down and a part is unavailable, it would then cost significantly more than the cost of having it in inventory (Ackoff, 1994).A tool for applying total systems thinking toward understanding and analyzing different mineral extraction options is the structured analysis and design techniques (SADT). Originally developed by Ross (1977), SADT is a formal systems engineering methodology (FIPS PUB, 1993) for process and enterprise modelling (Marca and McGowan, 1993). Figure 1 presents a highlevel structured analysis of the traditional or conventional metal extraction process. There are three sequential processes with several arrows entering or exiting each process. In SADT, inputs always enter from the left-hand side and exit as outputs of the process on the right-hand side. Constraints affecting the transformation of inputs to outputs enter the process from the top while resources or mechanisms enabling the transformation enter from the bottom. SADT is a hierarchical decomposition technique and further analysis is undertaken by expanding downward into each process."

Kennecott Copper Corporation's Chino Mines Division concentrator is located in Hurley, New Mexico. Construction of the concentrator was started in 1910 and its capacity was progressively increased over the years to the present nominal 20, 425 t/d of ore (22, 500 stpd). The principal copper minerals present in the ore are chalcopyrite and chalcocite with much of the chalcotite intimately associated with pyrite. Lime is used to depress pyrite, and flotation at a high pH or alkalinity is required for optimum recovery of chalcocite with good rejection of the pyrite. Regrinding is also required to liberate chalcocite-pyrite middling grains. Accurate control of the lime addition is necessary to obtain both optimum metallurgy and minimum lime usage. At low pH levels, flotation cell control is difficult due to excess froth, but excessively high pH levels can go unnoticed because froth characteristics do not change from those experienced at the deisred pH. With manual control of the lime addition, the desired pH can be exceeded for periods of up to two hours. In 1972 a major renovation of the flotation and regrinding circuits was com¬pleted and at that time a new lime distribution and control system was placed in operation. Limestone is obtained from a nearby quarry west of Hurley. The limestone is crushed, sized and fed to a rotary kiln and the quicklime product is stored prior to slaking. The lime is slaked, as required, in a mixing tank-classifier type slaker and the lime slurry is pumped to a concentrator storage tank from which it is distributed through a conventional closed loop system. The current average lime usage rate is approximately 6 kg/t of ore (12 lb per st).

Two plate load tests of 1 m2 area were per- formed in a pressure tunnel at the Rocky Mountain Pumped Hydro Project. Reaction for the 250 tons loading in this 10.5 meter diameter tunnel was provided by deeply anchored, diverging rock bolts, eight per load frame. Pressure build up to 2.5 MPa was provided by circular flatjacks. Rock deformation was recorded at depths of approximately 0.3, 0.9, 1.2, 1.8 and 3.3 meters using axially located multiple position borehole extensometers. The tests were performed in representative units of massive shale and thin to medium bedded siltstone. Stress was built up in four equal steps to 2.5 MPa, held constant for one week for creep monitoring, then unloaded, reloaded and unloaded over a period of one day. The most deformable unit was the massive shale which exhibited 1.3 mm of permanent deformation at the surface after the first loading and unloading cycle, which included 0.36 mm of creep. After the second loading-unloading cycle, the permanent deformation had increased to 2.6 mm, following a maximum deformation at the surface of approximately 3.6 mm. At the maximum stress of 2.5 MPa, the tangent modulus averaged 0.4 GPa when loading, and 0.3 GPa when unloading. The thin to medium bedded siltstone exhibited only 0.17 mm of permanent deformation at the surface after the first loading-unloading cycle, which included only 0.05 mm of creep. After the second loading-unloading cycle, the permanent deformation had increased to 0.27 mm, following a maximum deformation at the surface of approximately 0.53 mm. At the maximum stress of 2.5 MPa, the tangent modulus averaged 6.2 GPa when loading and 21.9 GPa when unloading.

This is also the case in the production of ferrovanadium, where, increasingly, materials such as discarded capacitors, spent catalysts, slag, dust and sludge are used. As the V-content in the raw material varies greatly, the demands on process technology are very high. The share of perturbing elements depends very much on the source of the raw materials, which, in turn, makes a corresponding optimization of the various refining steps necessary. The raw materials are mostly available as oxides, which means that carbon, silicon or aluminium are used as reducing agents. Thermodynamic calculations were used to show especially the behavior of vanadium and phosphorus at different process conditions.

The Bureau of Mines measured the geochemical changes as H2SO4 was used for in situ uranium leaching by Rocky Mountain Energy Company near Casper, Wyoming. Cores and ground water were analyzed before leaching. Water samples were taken from observation wells located between injection and production wells as the leach solution was brought up to full strength in several steps. Measurements were made of pH, Eh, temperature, conductivity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen,HC03, U. V, Na, K, Ca, Mg,S04, CI, Mo, Mn, Fe, AI, Si, F, P, As, and Se. The data were gathered to assist in geochemical modeling of leaching and to study the potential environmental effects of acid leaching. Environmental considerations appear favorable. For example, the concentration of Se, a toxic element often found in uranium deposits, stayed below the EPA standard for drinking water.

Attapulgite is a magnesium aluminosilicate clay mineral which exhibits unique, processing-enhanceable physical and chemical properties that are related to its current commercial uses. Properties of commercial interest are gelling, absorption, adsorption, binding, acid neutralization and many others. Major industrial applications are: (1) absorption by heat treated grades utilized in industrial oil and grease absorbents and in agricultural pesticide carriers; (2) gelling of aqueous liquid products by colloidal grades for stabilization and viscosity control in salt water drilling fluids, suspension fertilizers, liquid animal feed supplements, paints and tape joint compounds; (3) adsorption by heat treated varieties for the removal of catalysts, color bodies and other polar compounds from hydrocarbon streams; (4) gelling of organic liquids by colloidal attapulgite/surfactant blends in oil-type paints, fibrated and nonfibrated asphaltic coatings and mastic compositions, and (5) the binding of feeds and molecular sieve sorpents with colloidal type attapulgite products. These applications and other less common uses and potential uses will be discussed along with, the necessary selective mining and plant processing features related to each property and application.

Long before recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It is well known that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica-containing material have a great many uses in modern society. This material, however, is potentially an extreme health hazard. Silicosis: Not a New Disease Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. He was obviously describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. Silicosis was certainly described by Agricola in his De Re Metallica published in 1556. Here he described lung disease among hard-rock miners. The original document was written in Latin and then translated in 1912 by Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former US president who once made his living as a mining engineer. More recently, there are numerous references in medical literature in the 19th and 20th centuries relating silica exposure to silicosis. There are specific references to mining in hard rock, as well as to sandblasting and a host of other industrial exposures. In 1919, Winslow described standards for measuring the efficiency of exhaust systems in polishing shops using sandblasting. These standards were equally applicable in the mining industry. As early as 1920, Winslow explored the efficiency of certain devices used to protect sand-blasters against the dust hazard. These devices were equally applicable in the hard-rock mining industry. The medical community recognized the silica health hazard in the early 1900s. Middleton described the illness in the British Medical Journal in 1929. He noted the danger to health at that time. D. Hunter mentions in his book, The Diseases of Occupations (1969), the monumental work of Merryweather in 1936, in which he surveyed the silicosis risk in Great Britain. He showed statistically that the average employment length of sandblasters who ultimately died of silicosis was 10.3 years, compared to 40.1 years for all fatal cases, irrespective of occupation. Sandblasting and hard-rock mining and drilling, obviously, are very hazardous occupations. Weil and Zisking of Tulane University wrote in 1975 that "it was known as early as 1935 that the course of silicosis is much more rapid in sandblasters than in miners or foundry workers. This can be explained by the fact that sandblasters are exposed to an almost pure siliceous dust containing high concentrations of respirable particles within the range of 1 to 3 micron size." Protecting the Worker The medical community recognized in the early 1900s the need for proper protective equipment for all of those who worked with siliceous materials. Middleton, writing in 1929, said: "The worker is then protected by a close fitting helmet with an air feed, much as in the case of an underwater diver. In spite of these precautions, cases of silicosis among sandblasters are being met with today. It is a matter for serious consideration whether a substitute, such as steel or iron grit, could not be used to replace the siliceous grit as the abrading material." C. E. A. In 1481, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel conducted a survey of mines, prospects, and mineral resources in the Table Mountain RARE II area. There are no mines or active prospects in the study area. One prospect in the study area, the Waterfall Prospect, is estimated to contain 480 tons (440 t) of indicated subeconomic tungsten resources averaging about 0.18 percent tungsten trioxide (W03). Other tungsten occurrences are at the Stevens Prospect, just northwest of the area. Stone and sand and gravel deposits in the area are not considered to be resources because equal or better quality material is available closer to major markets. INTRODUCTION The 4,400-acre Table Mountain study area is 13 mi (21 km) southwest of Bishop, California, on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada range. The John Muir wilderness adjoins the study area on the southwest (fig. 1).

No panorama atual da coqueificação há uma necessidade comum de aumentar o uso de carvão de menor qualidade, principalmente devido ao alto custo e decrescente disponibilidade de carvões coqueificáveis de primeira linha. Neste cenário, uma forma de melhorar a qualidade do coque é através do controle de tamanho de partículas de carvões e misturas. A granulometria dos carvões pode alterar sua petrografia e propriedades reológicas, podendo ser utilizada de forma benéfica. O presente trabalho é uma primeira parte de um estudo de longo prazo e tem como objetivo avaliar os efeitos de preparação de carvão em suas propriedades. Para esse fim, dois carvões coqueificáveis e uma mistura foram selecionadas e caracterizadas em diferentes faixas de tamanho de partícula. Os carvões e suas frações granulométricas foram caracterizadas por análise imediata, petrografia, fluidez Gieseler e índice de inchamento livre. Os resultados demonstraram que as frações granulométricas dos carvões apresentam diferentes propriedades (cinzas, matéria volátil, composição maceral, fluidez e FSI) de acordo com o tamanho de partícula estudado. Além disso, discutiu-se o motivo por trás das diferenças observadas.

Pre-combustion cleaning of coal plays a key role in the process of efficient and clean utilization of coal resources. Recently, wet beneficiation of coal is predominant around the world. Nevertheless, wet beneficiation processes are limited by the increasingly serious problem of worldwide shortage of water, especially in China. Thus, it is imperative to develop efficient dry coal beneficiation techniques. Currently, several technologies such as air dense medium fluidized bed, compound dry cleaning and air jigging have successfully achieved high-efficiency separation of 50~6 mm coal. However, in recent years, a large amount of fine coal is generated as the mechanized mining technology has been progressively deployed in coal sector. Thus, it is necessary to develop efficient dry beneficiation techniques for fine coal. In recent years, many countries including China, India, Canada, Germen, and Australia have carried out many research works on fine coal dry beneficiation techniques. China University of Mining and Technology has carried out systematic researches on the introduction the vibrated energy to traditional air dense medium fluidized bed for fine coal beneficiation. This paper studied air dense medium vibrated fluidized beds (ADMVFB) for fine coal dry beneficiation. The experimental results show that the coal of <6 mm size can be beneficiated in an ADMVFB efficiently with the E value of 0.065~0.085, the separating density can be adjusted in the range of 1.45~2.2 g/cm3, and the lower limit of beneficiation can reach to 0.5 mm. The US Constitution provides for regulation by the states for protecting the public&apos;s safety, health, and welfare. Hence, in the eyes of the law of all states today, this is the sole justification for registration of professional engineers. Wyoming was the first state to register professional engineers in 1907, to correct abuses of incompetent or fraudulent practices in surveying and real estate. Public safety and health are most directly affected by civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Other branches of engineering have a profound effect on the public welfare, including investors, and safety and health of employees. No arguments, pro or con, are valid except in relation to the registration laws of various states. Code of Ethics Few would argue the desirability of requiring conformance with a code of ethics. A major problem lies in enforcing compliance, since protecting the public demands a high standard of competence, yet assessing competence gets confused with restraint of trade. Bidding engineering work on price competition can lead to pressure to cut corners on engineering quality, and was therefore discouraged by codes of ethics. The Supreme Court, in a suit against the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), barred any engineering society from such bidding restriction. It has, however, upheld the right of states to impose codes of acceptable practice as part of registration laws. For example, Texas Canon I reads, "The engineer&apos;s paramount professional responsibility should be the safety, health, and welfare of the general public." Anything less makes the code practically meaningless, but there are potential conflicts of interest in many engineering organizations. How can conflicts be handled? Any corporation could improve its public image by adopting a policy that each employed PE should, without fear of recrimination, record in writing over his seal any problem or flaw in any design that comes to his attention. The policy should further require that his superior provide him a written reply pointing out that the "flaw" is accepted as requiring correction or as a calculated risk, or overruled as erroneous or as a difference of opinion. Errors in calculation of judgment are inevitable. Despite this, there are limits to how much time and money should be spent to eliminate them. It is difficult, however, to see any excuse for failure to conscientiously evaluate the opinion of a PE. This may be an impossible ideal, but how else can the profession or the industry have credibility? The National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE) has a code of ethics one presumably subscribes to by signing an application to write a Principles and Practices examination. However, NCEE has none of the power of enforcement that is available through state boards of registration. Registration Qualifications Qualifications are set by the laws of the states. In general, they require passage of an eight-hour examination in fundamentals, preferably at graduation, and, later, one in principles and practices. The examinations are compiled and distributed by NCEE. This system provides for a high degree of uniformity and reciprocity. States set the education and experience levels (typically four years after graduation) required by those desiring to write the principles and practices examination. Examinations The principles and practices examination calls for answering eight of 20 equal weight questions; one on engineering economics, 19 on engineering. Economics may enter into engineering questions, but only provided the question is not answerable by an economist without engineering training. In preparing examinations, NCEE strives to use questions that require some judgment and can be more effectively answered by someone with four years experience beyond college. "THE TOWN OF Salmo, rail centre for the Salmo lead-zinc mining district, is in southeastern British Columbia 26 miles by road east of Trail an about the same distance south of Nelson. The belt in which the mines occur is a few miles east of Salmo and extends about 6 miles north of the town and 17 miles south and southwest to the International Boundary. The belt includes the H. B. mine of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, the Jersey mine of Canadian Exploration Limited, the Reeves MacDonald mine, and the Jack Pot property of New Jersey Zinc Explorations Limited.Since 1949, the Jersey and Reeves MacDonald mines have produced most of the lead and zinc in the district. From 1949 through 1954 these two mines together produced a total of 233,134 ounces of silver, 87,659,399 pounds of lead, 215,708,856 pounds of zinc and 475,397 pounds of cadmium. This amounts to more than 80 per cent of the total production of lead and 95 per cent of the total production of zinc from the district since the first recorded production in 1906. Reserves at the largest properties amount to several million tons of ore containing 4 to 7 per cent combined lead and zinc. Several prospects are potential producers.Regional StructureThe main structural units in the Salmo area are outlined in Figure I, and the major rock units of the stratigraphic column are listed in the following table. The lead and zinc deposits are replacements in a highly deformed limestone formation near the base of the Laib group, and all mineralized zones are on the south and east side of structural unit 2 (see Figure I)."

"From preliminary investigations it has been observed that although evaporation losses may be estimated by comparing single values of certain physical properties of crude oils and their evaporation residues, such techniques possess little accuracy unless both the evaporation process and the variation of the property as a function of the process are completely known. The accuracy of estimation may be increased somewhat through the comparison of property mid-per-cent curves. Further increases in accuracy are possible if bottoms yield •curves rather than mid-percent curves are used. The use of both the mid-percent and bottoms yield curves however involves a prohibitive amount of effort in most cases. Examinations of distillation bottoms from Hempel type distillations carried to end points just short of the cracking point have indicated that these bottoms are not appreciably affected by the evaporation process. It was further observed that bottoms of identical API gravity, obtained from a crude oil and its evaporation residues behave as if they were pure components which were unaffected by evaporation. Based on these observations Hempel distillation bottoms of equal API gravity were obtained for a crude oil and its various evaporation residues from API gravity bottoms yield curves. The volume percent of these bottoms in the crude oil and its residues were used to calculate the evaporation losses suffered by the crude in order to yield the various residues. The results indicate that, although further refinements in technique are required, it is possible to calculate evaporation losses with an accept-able degree of accuracy through the use of this method."

"In light of the recurring spills and failures of conventional tailings disposal pond dams, a brief review of the Thickened Tailings Disposal (TTD) system is presented. It is shown that by the process of thickening the tailings to a heavy slurry prior to disposal, it is possible to create a self-supporting deposit of tailings and to eliminate the typical superimposed settling pond. These features, together with the ability to reclaim the disposal area even as mining continues, preclude an ecological disaster. IntroductionMine tailings spills are really not such rare occurrences. They have been happening on many continents, in many countries. Neither Canada nor the United States have been spared. In Ontario, the most recent spill occurred at a closed-down tailings disposal area in Matachewan, in 1991.Such continuing disasters could be avoided if a different approach were taken to the disposal of tailings wastes. The recent failures at the Los Frailes mine in Spain, the Omai mine in Guyana, and the Marcopper mine in the Philippines, will hopefully shake up the industry to consider other methods of disposal. The reason why the failure of a conventional tailings disposal dam is so environmentally disastrous is not the dam itself, but the fact that the dam retains a mass of very loose unconsolidated tailings and a great deal of water, or process fluid1. If the dam fails, the contents liquefy completely as they flow through the breach. In this liquid state, they can flow many miles downstream. If the dam itself were built of tailings material, as is often the case, it too would liquefy and join the flow.The reason the material is so loose in the first place is that it has been discharged into a pond filled with water. The tailings particles drift down through the water, their weight reduced by 50% due to buoyancy, to form a loose structure, like a “house of cards,” or lakebottom mud. It doesn’t take much of a shock to collapse the material into a liquefied state."

Mixed uranium and refractory metal carbide systems have been proposed for space nuclear power and propulsion applications. Solid-core space nuclear reactors could be utilized for low- earth-orbit (LEO) to geosynchronous-earth-orbit (GEO) transfers, manned missions to the moon or mars, and orbiter missions to the outer planets. However, these high performance space nuclear reactors present some challenging materials engineering requirements for operating in a high temperature, high radiation, and hot hydrogen environment. Since the RoverNERVA programs were concluded in 1973, significant advances in ultrahigh temperature materials technology have been made which can be applied to the development of an advanced solid-core nuclear fuel. Nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) was first studied in the U.S. beginning in the mid-1950&apos;s during the RoverNERVA programs. During that time, about 20 rocket reactors were built and tested. More recently, Russian nuclear rocket reactor tests with pseudo-ternary carbide nuclear fuels (U, Zr, Nb)C and (U, Zr, Ta)C have been operated at temperatures as high as 3300 K for one hour. This study examined the processing parameters for fabricating the pseudo-ternary carbide, (U, Zr, Nb)C.

CaCO3, as a component widely existing in natural minerals, is a common impurity. In recent years, triboelectric separation has been applied to the separation of minerals containing CaCO3. However, the CaCO3’ s tribocharging mechanism is still unclear and the charging effect of CaCO3 is not obvious. In order to study the effect of triboelectric charging of CaCO3 particles under different conditions, according to the single particle frictional collision charge-mass ratio formula derived from the condenser model, an experimental platform for particle tribocharging was built in this paper. Then, the formula of charge-to-mass ratio (Q/m) was derived based on the analysis of the particle force. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to record particle motion trajectories to calculate the Q/m of one particle by this formula. In the experiment, the airflow velocity, tribocharge material, and moving distance of the particles were varied to investigate the variation of the particle charge-mass ratio results. The results show that CaCO3 was negatively charged when tribocharging with mental. The particle’s Q/m is positively correlated with the airspeed. When the metal is triboelectrically charged with the insulator, the metal with a smaller work function leads to the insulator particle with a larger Q/m. As the moving distance of the particles increases beyond 230 mm, the particle charge ratio decreases. The particle charge-mass ratio is consistent with the trend of the charge-mass ratio deduced from the capacitance model.

Consideráveis esforços vêm sendo realizados para aumentar o desempenho das operações metalúrgicas e a qualidade do aço produzido. Nesse sentido, o papel das escórias no processamento do aço tem se tornado de muita importância. Com o objetivo da otimização das escórias, numerosos estudos têm sido conduzidos para uma melhor compreensão do efeito da composição química e demais propriedades da escória sobre a viscosidade, bem como, sua influência sobre o controle da limpeza inclusionária. Também se tem observado uma evolução das técnicas experimentais de laboratório que são empregadas para a investigação estrutural e medidas das propriedades físicas das escórias. Essa evolução e investigação são fundamentais, inclusive, para o ambiente prático da indústria do aço.

Linear cutting tests of a porous sandstone with a radial drag pick show that saturation of rock with water can increase the specific energy of fragmentation. This appears to be due, in this case, to a saturation-induced increase in the forces acting on the cutting tool without a concomitant increase of the fragmented volume. The mechanisms of this reaction are explored by examining various responses of the parameters controlled and induced during the linear cutting tests, such as cut spacing, cutter penetration, three-dimensional forces and muck production. A program of load-indentation testing is underway to evaluate the permeability threshold of this behavior. These findings are opposite from those made when the same rock is cut with a constant cross-section disc cutter reported elsewhere (Abu Bakar and Gertsch, 2011). Such results highlight the effects of different cutting tool designs, and indicate the need for a well-coordinated program of research to support effective excavator design and selection.
